Sophon wins Pattaya Mail Cup Championship

The last exciting match of the Pattaya Mail Cup 97 was played on December 13th with Sophon Cable bringing home the gold. With Sophon and Khotabut fiercely fighting for ascendancy, the game ended with a score of 2 to 1, Sophon Cable having slammed in the winning goal.

The Grand Prize of 12,000 baht and the ‘Sansak Ngarmphiches Cup’ was awarded to the Sophon Cable TV Team.

The first runner-up prize, the ‘Chanyuth Hengtrakul Trophy’, went to the Khotabut team.

Second runner-up, Sri Patum University, won the ‘Pairat Suthithamrongsawat’ trophy.

Third runner-up, the Benja team, was awarded the ‘Sutham Phantusak’ Trophy.

The matches were exciting and the final face-off had fans in a frantic frenzy.

The game attracted many VIPs, such as Sansak Ngarmphiches, Head of the Parliamentary Committee on Tourism, Chanyuth Hengtrakul, the owner and sponsor of the winning Sophon Cable Team, Mayor Pairat Suthithamrongsawat, and football fanatic Pol. Major Jongsak Yeamlamool, Commander of the Tourist Police for Pattaya.

The Pattaya Mail Cup was the brainchild of the Pattaya Mail and Pattaya Rarn Koo Restaurant.

Pratheep Malhotra, Editor in Chief of the Pattaya Mail, made a speech, saying he was very happy with the response from the public. With great delight, he presented the educational materials and sports equipment to a representative of the Wat Khao Pho Thong School. Mr. Malhotra said the Pattaya Mail ’98 cup would bring in even more funds to help with education in Pattaya.

Chanyuth, the winning team’s sponsor, said this was one of the most cathartic moments of his life, and he was going to give his team a night on the town which they would remember until the hangovers wore off and even after.

Big John back on top

Big John Williams played himself back to the top of the Pattaya Golf Society weekly tournament on Tuesday, December 9 at Sriracha. Big John carded a net 5 under par 67 off his new 34 handicap to score 41 Stableford points, beating his closest rival by 4 shots.

Peter Johansson shot a scratch 97, net 1 under par for 37 points, good enough for second place on the windy day.

George Meigh just missed out on breaking 90 when he stumbled to a 10 on a par four. Nonetheless, George scored 34 points and finished third.

Bill Jones, John Hopkins and Bill Nicol all finished tied for fourth, each with 26 Stableford points.

Nearest to the pin honors were achieved by Big John Williams on #3 and George Meigh on #8.

PGS Notes: The AGM, originally scheduled for 6 December, has been postponed until the 12th of January, 8:00 p.m. at Big John’s Place. (PGS is changing its fiscal year to 1/1 through 31/12). All members are encouraged to attend.

Crash of the Titans

Alan’s Spartans and Rick’s Titans staged a Herculean, if lopsided, battle at the weekly Pattaya Sports Club softball game on December 7.

The first game saw the Spartans grab the early lead scoring seven runs in the second inning before the Titans could gather their armor. Aloha Tom’s big three run homer for the Spartans was the key hit in the scoring drive.

The Titans were never able to rattle their sabers as Billy Blooper in right and Jimmy (The Key) Lockhead in left stymied the Titans offense with their stellar defense.

When Aussie (Kingpin) Peter smacked a grand slam for the Spartans in the bottom of the third, the jousting was all but over, with the Titans crashing fourteen to one.

The second game continued along the same lines with the Spartans taking a three zip lead before the Titans’ Alan (Leaving) Vegas belted a three run home run in the bottom of the third to tie the score.

The Spartans responded by scoring four in the fourth and three in the fifth and were never threatened, finishing with an eleven to eight victory.

Kudos to Mark (The Natural) Southampton, who, as a baseball virgin, and several hits and played strong defense for the Titans in center field. Likewise to Jimmy (One) Coke for his presence and support at every game.

Whether a player of spectator, games are every Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Pattaya School #7, just past Greenway driving range and Caltex gas station on Sukhumvit Highway. Equipment is provided and refreshments are available. All are welcome.

Sunday Quiz upsets

For which sport is FINA the governing body? Who wrote the book My Turn about her husband’s years in power?

On December 7, the mighty Rising Sun for once had a reverse, managing only 70% against the more modest Poteen Still who managed to clock up 80%. Some observers said Poteen’s team had been fortified by a couple of teachers, but others put down their success to fortified wine. We’ll probably never know for sure. Best scores of the evening went to Cheers and Bob’s who both managed 84% in a quiz which delved into most encyclopedia subjects. Mick’s also did well and squeezed out 82%, although their foreign language experts had an off night or maybe a night off. FINA is the governing body for swimming - from the French, "Federation International de Natation Amateur".

Scores in the Sunday quiz overall are averaging around 75% as masterminds from all over the world converge on Pattaya for intellectual inter-facing over the Christmas season. Some say the trend is part of the Amazing Thailand campaign, others point to the academic library which is rumored to be behind the bar at Tippy’s Pizza Palace. Whatever the truth, all bars will welcome your support on Sundays just before 8.30 p.m. No need to call the Samaritans.

The rank order is:
Cheers 501 points
Rising Sun 491
Bob’s 486
Pleasure Dome 473
Mick’s 454
Palmer’s 449
Poteen Still 445
Billy and Da 425
Londoner 424
Tippy’s 353

Norman Brooks carded 42 Stableford points off his 18 handicap to win Division I by a clear 5 strokes. Gary Baxter finished runner-up in Division I with 37 points.

Kevin Bukowski was victorious in Division II after carding 37 Stableford points off his 25 handicap. Steve Ross earned second place in Division II with 34 points.

Drake Smith won Best Front 9 in Division II with 18 points, while Ken Cook earned Best Back 9 in Division II with 18 points.

Marc Jernigan won the Long Drive contest in Division I, and John Neild won the Long Drive in Division II.

Nearest the pins in Division I were won by Tony Stevens on Ocean #5, Keith Watson on Ocean #7, Derek Reaper on Lakes #2, and Stan Fry on Lakes #7.

Bernie burns up blustery Burapha

Bernie Tuppin, the Mighty Midget from Oz, led his men from the Splinter Golf Group to victory in this Six Team Invitational at Burapha. With the help of Brian Ewen, Mick O’Meara and Gerard Lambert, their best three-out-of-four Stableford scores totaled 116 points, enough to give them 1st place over the Scandic team Sture Brisholm, Jonas Bergstrom, Jonas Rosell and Kenneth Vittelus. The battling Brits team of Gez Tracey, Steve Ross, Stan Fry and Harry Riley came in 3rd with 112 points.

Shakey Pete’s, with certainly the strongest looking team on paper of Dennis Willet, Paul Kraft, Herbie Ishinaga and Jim Montgomery, took 4th place with 99 points. This on a count back from Hasse’s Soft Rock Cafe who, even with Svein (The Viking) Vistung’s presence, along with Mats Lindborg, Mikael Soderberg and Andreas Hayes, could not score that extra point to avoid 5th place.

6th place and title of ‘Ducks of the Day’ went to the Swedish contingent, representing the Cafe Kronborg, of Thomas Bergnall, Lars Horberg, Ove Andersson and head duck Mats Levin with their grand total of 97 points.

Thanks for coming Lads.

A special mention must be made of Sture Brisholm who shot a gross 37 off a 13 handicap on the front nine, in very windy conditions. Well done Sture.

All the competitors would like to thank the staff at Burapha for making it such an enjoyable day on a course presented in excellent condition.

Footnote: Section 6-5 of the USGA Handicap System used by PSC Golf states that if a player belongs to more than one golf club, the Committee in charge of a competition may require that player to play off his lowest handicap when competing with other players from more than one club.

Frank Collins PSC fishing king

Frank Collins of the Atlantis Club Café fishing team landed a 1.8 kilogram Barracuda to win first place in the Pattaya Sports Club fishing tournament held on Wednesday, December 10, 1997.

Three boats with 12 fishermen on board participated in the event. Unfortunately, organizers couldn’t predict the weather, and high winds with rough seas created problems for the fishermen, resulting in very few fish being landed. Those that were landed were few and small. One Pompano, one shark, two barracuda, four jack, and two grouper made up the entire haul for the day. A total of fifteen kilos of fish were checked in, with the largest being three kilograms.

Adrian Adams, also fishing with Atlantis Club Café, finished second on the day with his 1.6 kilo Amber Jack. Both first and second place fish were caught off Ko Phi on the boat captained by Dang.
