By now, many of our readers must be familiar with the Microlights flying around Jomtien and Pattaya. You know - those hanglider motorized looking aircraft.
If youve not had the good fortune to be a passenger in one of these machines, then now is a good opportunity to try, especially if you want some relief from the hot streets and crowded beaches at this time of year.
Pattaya viewed from the air is intriguing, particularly from a Microlight aircraft. The versatility of motor and glide capabilities are described as the closest feeling to actually flying. Plus the perspective from the air seems to clearly solve the puzzle of the appearingly muddled streets of Pattaya and its surrounding area.
Often you hear people remark that they would "love to give it a go" but are unsure of its safety. How safe, you might ask, is sitting on the back of a motorbike taxi compared to flying in a traffic free zone, in a machine that is fully certified and maintained to international standards and under the control of a qualified Australian pilot.
The Eastern Flying Club, whose airstrip is the other side of Sukhumvit Highway, is where Mark Overend operates. He is the only internationally qualified Microlight pilot and instructor, flying and teaching in Thailand at the moment.
As there are no official guidelines or air laws firmly established for small aircraft, Mark adheres to his international background of Australian aviation laws, which are based on and similar to American and British standards.
Mark has been flying around Thailand for over two years and has decided, due to the ideal climate and conditions most of the year, to establish a Microlight school here in Pattaya, enabling others to enjoy this amazing form of aviation sport.
If you are interested in taking a flight, or wish to learn to fly at a fraction of the cost if would be overseas, then you can contact Mark Overend on 01 650 0989. Next weeks Pattaya Mail will give a detailed description of flying courses.

Pattaya football team looks for support
Mr. Panya Panyakhananukul, the Coach & Manager of the Pattaya Team, said that Pattaya had sent a team to the 14th Yamaha Thailand Games as a public relations gesture. The team received 250,000 baht in sponsorship from Police Lt. Commander Wanchalerm Yubamrung, son of former Minister of the Interior Chalerm Yubamrung. The team now practices at the Mitsubishi Auto Assembly Centre Football Field.
The team will go to Lopburi Province for playoffs in February and March. Out of the five teams Pattaya sent in the past, two won the playoffs and represented the Eastern Seaboard. In the games, Pattaya has never made it past 8th place in the finals.
The coaches and teams are working their hardest this year in hopes of being able to compete in the final games.
The team is suffering from a handicap as funds to support their efforts are insufficient due to the nasty state of the economy. But they are not discouraged and continue practising, out of sheer love for the game.
The team is now hoping that benevolent people will see their difficulty and provide help in their effort to bring glory to Pattaya.
Chonburi also did a good deed this year by gathering a team in the new province of Amnart Chareon, formerly a part of Uborn province. The province is notoriously poor, so Chonburi supporters paid the necessary application and entrance fees for them to join the Yamaha Thailand Cup, but the guys are operating on a shoestring. Their dream is to represent the Northeast or Isan region of Thailand. At this point, team members are paying all their own expenses, buying their own food and living in less than ideal conditions. Most of them come from rural families who do not have the money that the parents of the usual national teams have.
They will be playing in the North-eastern play-offs in Srisaket province in February and March. Their coach is Mr. Oh Phin Wan, a Korean who has kindly donated his time and expertise to help the team.
Any help with expenses for such items as food, transportation and daily expenses would be much appreciated by this team of local boys from the Northeast.
Those wishing to support the teams may contact the Pattaya Mail and speak with Acharn Kittisak Khamthong (Thai language) or Pratheep Malhotra, (English language.)

Rising Sun launches devastating strike
Which country lies on the southern border of Belarus? Which sport is governed by the Harvard Rules?
Late on the evening of Sunday February 1st, saboteurs from the Rising Sun conducted a highly successful moonlight raid and knocked out the Cheers headquarters in Pattayaland Soi Two. The Sun, by scoring 80 direct hits against Cheers 68, whilst also displaying arguably the finest legs in Pattaya - Sunday dinners to be precise - roared into first place. Cheers now have four weeks left in the current season to regain the top dog place.
However, in the equally vicious Wednesday quiz, Cheers have a commanding lead of eight credits against all comers. They would have to lose most of their remaining seven matches or suffer a mass, combined attack of Alzheimers Disease With Brewers Droop to lose at this stage. Still, informed insiders, who have asked not to be named, say this is a distinct possibility. The answers to the questions above are Ukraine and American football. You too can astound your friends and flabbergast yourself by joining the resistance movement at any of the listed bars, Wednesday or Sunday just before 8.30 p.m. Current totals are:
Sunday Quiz
Rising Sun 1137 points
Cheers 1133
Bobs 1102
Palmers 1095
