Deceased Dolphin washes ashore on
Jomtien Probably caught in fishing nets |
A tourist informed police that a dolphin, rare in the Gulf of Thailand, was floating dead in the water off Jomtien Beach. The shore patrol dragged the body of the mammal to shore. Officers were surprised, as dolphins usually feed in deep waters outside the Gulf. The male dolphin weighed 50 kilograms and was approximately 120 centimeters long. The shore patrol conjectured that the dolphin was caught in a drag style fishing net. During the struggle to free itself, the mammal may have sustained internal injuries and died of trauma. Pattaya notified the Fisheries Department but received no reply. If fishing boats used the proper type of nets, the mammal would have been able to free itself without injury.
