Deceased Dolphin washes
ashore on Jomtien
Probably caught in fishing nets
A
tourist informed police that a dolphin, rare in the Gulf of Thailand, was floating dead in
the water off Jomtien Beach.
The shore patrol dragged the body of the mammal to shore. Officers were
surprised, as dolphins usually feed in deep waters outside the Gulf. The male dolphin
weighed 50 kilograms and was approximately 120 centimeters long. The shore patrol conjectured that the dolphin was caught in a
drag style fishing net. During the struggle to free itself, the mammal may
have sustained internal injuries and died of trauma. Pattaya notified the Fisheries Department but received no reply. If fishing boats used the proper type of nets, the mammal would have been
able to free itself without injury.

Foreigners to be allowed to own Thai land?
Prime Minister Chuan Leekphai met last week with his
cabinet to discuss a bill to allow foreigners to buy land, a move intended to placate
certain criteria set out by the IMF.
The IMF has criticized Thailand for the delay in dealing with economic
problems. The Prime Minister, however, stated that he felt that there would be no
instant cure for the large obstacles the Thai economy faced.
A part of the solution might be to allow non-Thai nationals to have the
right to own land and office buildings.
The proposed plan set out by the Prime Minister and his cabinet describes
4 cases in which this would be possible:
