Bandits make off with 2000
Delaney’s Funhill Cup
When a team enters a golf tournament with the name
“The Bandits”, a certain image is conjured up; certain questions are
raised. “What do these guys know that the rest of us don’t?” When
that same team wins the tournament, was that image confirmed or did they
simply, with unbelievable chutzpah, pull of a stunner?
The
winning team of Phillip Adkins and Mark Jasper (The Bandits) accept their
trophy from PSC Golf Chairman Mike Franklin.
On Friday, May 12, the Delaney’s Funhill Cup was
played at Eastern Star. Playing with the team moniker “The Bandits”,
Phillip Adkins, off 36, and Mark Jasper, who plays off 28, hijacked the
tournament with an outstanding four over par gross, which netted them THE
CUP with a score of 63.2. Their margin of victory was a scant four tenths
of stroke, and with 67 other teams in the Two Man Scramble, one wouldn’t
think their closest competition would come from the other team in their
foursome.
“Dream
Teamer” Jack Levy, “The Most Happy Golfer”
Playing right along side “The Bandits” was the
“Double M” team of Mark Beaton, off 21, and Mike Smith, whose handicap
is twenty-six. The tournament rules allowed only 20 percent of the
combined team handicaps, which gave the “Double M” team 9.4 strokes.
They shot a 73 off the stick and took second place with a score of 63.6
net. These four golfers either had a guardian angel hovering over their
shots, or they had some serious side action going that was keeping them
extremely focused. More likely, it was just that they were having a great
time playing golf together and their concentration was aimed at having
fun.
Kim
Fletcher gives advice to Lewis Underwood as Steve Mascari looks on
“Having fun” was what Kim Fletcher and the folks at
Delaney’s had in mind when they started this tournament, hence the name
Funhill Cup. Any similarity between the Alfred Dunhill Cup and this
competition was, in the beginning, completely intentional. The teams were
to be comprised of fellow countrymen who were playing for something akin
to “National Pride”. That idea fell somewhat by the wayside when the
winning team of the first Funhill Cup was composed of an Aussie and a
Yank. It’s not like “National Pride” doesn’t exist in Pattaya.
It’s just that to most ex-pats who live here, it’s about seventeenth
of the list of what is important. Having a good time playing golf,
however, ranks very high on the list.
“Double
M” - Mark Beaton and Mike Smith doubled their pleasure and finished
doubly well in 2nd.
In stark contrast to previous tournaments sponsored by
Delaney’s, the weather for the Funhill Cup was near about perfect. There
were high clouds, strong breezes, and no rain. It was just hot enough to
make the contestants greatly appreciate the free Carlsburg at all the
drink stands. Eastern Star was in beautiful shape and the team effort to
have a well-run tournament was very much in evidence. The best team of the
day was surely Kim Fletcher and his crew from Delaney’s, Ray Caron and
the people at Eastern Star, and Mike Franklin and his helpers from PSC
Golf. The combined organizational skills of these three groups allowed for
an outstanding day of golf.
“D’Stocheri”,
Peter Renggli and Steve Ryser “fun-filled” their way to 3rd at the
Funhill.
Maybe the nicest thing about playing in a Delaney’s
tournament is going back to the pub after the golf and eating some of the
best food in town. Wearing one of the Funhill Cup 2000 golf shirts got you
in line for the Carvery and all you could eat all night long. Somewhere
between stuffing yourself senseless and downing untold pints of Guinness
and Kilkinney and Carlsburg, the trophies were presented; the Lucky Draw
commenced; and the Charity Raffle brought in B.40,000 in aid of the
Chonburi Project for the Development of Children and Young People. A more
totally successful day would be hard to imagine.

PSC May Fishing
Sunday, May 7, 2000, Willems Michel landed a 52 kilogram
(114 pound) Black Tip Spinner Shark. The fish was landed at 5:00 a.m. after
the team had been out fishing all evening and night. The huge fish took just
over an hour to land after it had taken nearly all the line off the reel.
The fish measured 183 cm in length, 78 cm in width, and had a mouth
measuring 28 cm. The fish was caught outside of Bang Saray. In addition to
the large shark, 61 Dolphin fish were caught, weighing between 1-2 kg each,
bringing the day’s catch to about 260 lb. total.

The Pattaya Sports Club Fishing Section promotes a
monthly tournament featuring a month long competition starting the first day
of each month lasting through the last day of each month. By registering in
advance, fishermen will be able to choose the day in which they want to
participate in the PSC promoted monthly tournament.
Only teams having properly registered using an official
form will be entered into the tournament. Forms must be submitted in
advance. Forms will not be accepted after returning from fishing. Each
tournament entry can now fish a full 24-hour period of time. The fishermen
can now choose the time of day and the location in which they prefer to
fish. Weigh-ins are flexible, but must be witnessed and by a PSC Fishing
Committee member at a specific time and location to validate the weigh-in.
Updated results for each of the tournaments during the
month will be posted at the Local Fish & Trips Bar on Soi Yodsak. This
board will track the current monthly tournament standings, including the
special categories positions. The PSC fishing section approves the same game
fish as the IGFA rules.
Forms will be made available by fax or e-mail, or can be
picked up, or register in person at the “Local Fish & Trips Bar” or
the “SGP Bar & Caf?”, both located on Soi Yodsak (Soi 6) in North
Pattaya.

Delaney’s Funhill Cup raises B. 40,000
in aid of the ‘Chonburi Project for the Development of Children and Young
People’
The Charity Raffle, run as part of the Delaney’s
Funhill Cup tournament on Friday 12th May, raised an impressive B.40,000 for
the Chonburi Project at the evening’s prize giving. The money will be used
for a specific need at the new home for disadvantaged children and young
people, and young offenders from the Observation and Protection Centre in
Rayong.
The star prize was a ‘Character’ role in best selling
author Stephen Leather’s new book ‘The Stretch’, due for publication
later this year. The ‘character’ winner, very appropriately, was a
delighted Stephan Ryser, a Swiss resident in Pattaya.
The Harvey Penick Driver was inappropriately won by Bobby
Joe from the 60’s Bar, as Bobby Joe is a non-golfer. However, he very
kindly returned the driver for auction and this enabled emcee Mike Franklin
to raise a further B.7000 towards the total, thanks to the generosity of
Gerry Carpenter.
The Delaney’s Free Carvery every week for a year
voucher was won by Ken Cooke, much to Kim Fletcher’s delight as Ken
apparently has a small and somewhat infrequent appetite.
The Charity Raffle was well supported and thanks are due to all who
contributed to the successful result.

Johnnie Walker to bring Tiger Woods back
to Thailand
Ed Shyurng, Managing Director of United Distillers and
Vintners Asia Pacific has confirmed that the Johnnie Walker Classic is
returning to Thailand and will be played at the scenic Alpine Golf &
Sports Club, Bangkok, November 16-19, 2000.
The Johnnie Walker Classic has always attracted the
world’s best golfers to Asia, as can be clearly seen from the list of
past champions: Nick Faldo 1990 and 1993, Greg Norman 1994, Fred Couples
1995, Ian Woosam 1996, Ernie Els 1997, Tiger Woods 1998, and Michael
Campbell 1999.
It
has been confirmed that Tiger Woods will return to Thailand to play in the
2000 Johnnie Walker Classic in November.
The 2000 Johnnie Walker Classic, with prize money of
baht 48 million, will feature a starting field of 156 players from the
European, Australasian, and Asian Tours plus leading players from China,
Hong Kong, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines,
Singapore, Taiwan, and of course Thailand.
Mr. Shyrung went on to announce that the world’s
number one golfer, Tiger Woods will be returning to Bangkok in an attempt
to regain the Johnnie Walker trophy from New Zealander Michael Campbell
who won last year’s Johnnie Walker Classic in Taiwan.
Born to a Thai mother, Tiger Woods enjoys a very
special place in the hearts of the Thai people. People might recall that
Woods first played the Johnnie Walker Classic as an amateur in 1994 when
it was held at Phuket’s Blue Canyon Country Club. In fact, Tiger still
holds the amateur course record at Blue Canyon, shooting a 71. He went on
to win the Johnnie Walker Classic in 1998, the last time the tournament
was held in the kingdom, also at Blue Canyon.
The first round of the Johnnie Walker Classic will tee
off on Thursday, November 16 and will be preceded by the Opening Ceremony
and the Johnnie Walker Pro-VIP event on Tuesday, November 14 and the
Johnnie Walker Amateur Championship Pro-Am on Wednesday, November 15.
The Johnnie Walker Classic will receive live TV
coverage on all four days of the championship, which will be broadcast
worldwide.
The Johnnie Walker Classic is owned and staged by IMG in partnership
with United Distillers and Vintners.
Fitness Tips: A time for
thanks
by David Garred
Club Manager Dusit Resort Sports Club
G’Day All,
Over the past 4 years fitness tips as a column has been
in many directions and my regular readers know full well that I try to
deal with or discuss as many sides of the human being as I am qualified to
do.
This week’s column is two pronged. I have something
for all of us and something very specific for a particular bunch of people
also.
General health and well being is a very broad area to
cover and I want to go along the well being road, the well being of the
soul, possibly karma is a word some people will use once they read on.
Think back on the last time you did something good for
someone else, something unexpected, not for money or for
self-gratification but simply because you could.
It felt good didn’t it.
To see the look on that person’s face, the big
beaming smile and their eyes light up just because of you.
That in itself is more than what you expected, then to
have that same person thank you not just once but many times puts you in a
good mood for weeks on end.
All of us are taught from a young age to thank someone
when they give us something, fine, great as a matter of fact. Next time
someone does something for you, be it special or not, thank them but
don’t make it a motor response. Be sincere. Let them know that you
really do appreciate them.
That leads me to the specific bunch I was talking about
earlier.
Over the past 6 weeks, I have been the one experiencing
a good mood in perpetuity. There was a job that came up and I knew that I
had a good chance of achieving the goal as long as I got some help from,
basically, every single friend that I have in Thailand.
So now it is my turn to thank them. I have been trying
to do it individually and will continue to do so but that in itself is a
large task.
The job was the organisation of the Pattaya 10’s
International Rugby Tournament. These people made a mammoth task
manageable and pleasurable.
Background story is short and simple: Pattaya Panthers
were booked to play in the Thailand International 10’s Rugby Tournament
in Bangkok on Easter weekend this year. The host club had difficulties and
postponed the tournament ten days before it was due to kickoff.
Nine Days before kickoff our club, Pattaya Panthers
announced that we were to offer ourselves up as an alternative host.
With that in mind you all will understand that the
first group I have to thank is the financial sponsors: Delaney’s Pattaya
and Foster Wheeler for really coming to the party. CR Industrial services,
ACS Asia, McConnell Dowell, Global Silverhawk, Shell Thailand, Thainox and
Mermaids Dive Center.
Equal faith was shown by all the internationally
travelling teams and the sides from within Thailand for having the faith
in us and not canceling their plans.
Several other companies in the local area deserve
thanks also: Pat’s Pies, Pattaya Mail, Classic Travel for ensuring that
our guests were well taken care of during their stay.
My employers, Dusit Hotels - Dusit Resort Pattaya in
Particular, for being very understanding and allowing me to spend a large
amount of my time away from my real job.
Thanks also to: Dr. Virachai and Simon Leslie for
allowing us to call the rugby pitch at ISR our home and tournament venue.
Laem Chabang Hospital staff for caring for our injured players so well.
Graham Macdonald and Neil Smith for taking care of things off the pitch.
All our referees for keeping it to the pure game. The spectators for
coming out and always cheering for the right team. Kim Fletcher and Paul
Dobbs for taking care of the spectators, laughs and lubrication are always
necessary.
Finally, to every single member of the Pattaya
Panthers. Active, inactive, social, supportive and families. These people
are remarkable in every sense of the word. I knew they would want to help
when we discussed taking this over the 24 hour period of decision time
before officially taking this on. However, I could never have hoped or
dreamed for the huge response I received without even asking for help.
Please know the help was needed and thoroughly appreciated. You Panthers
are without a doubt the most wonderful bunch of people I have ever had the
good fortune to be associated with and you all have my wholehearted
thanks.
When I think about what was achieved in only 9 days due
to the efforts of these individuals and companies alike I feel good all
over and I hope this sincere thanks from me puts a smile on your face
also.
Plans are already in place to host the event again next
year.
If you all are happy to be associated again then I
would be excited at the prospect of doing as much as I can to see the
continued success of the Pattaya Panthers and our hosting of the now
growing Thailand International 10’s Rugby Tournament.
Thank you one and all.
