Coulthard gives Schumi the finger!
In a brilliant race at the Magny Cours circuit in France,
Scotland’s new hero, David Coulthard, in his McLaren Mercedes, took the
race up to championship leader Michael Schumacher, and defiantly drove past
his Ferrari to score a decisive win. This places Coulthard in a very strong
and challenging position for the title, with eight races yet to run.
In
the days leading up to the race, Coulthard had been very much ‘on form’,
eclipsing current world champion and team mate Mika Happy Hakkinen. With
very little qualifying, because of an engine oil leak, Coulthard was just
pipped for pole by the German’s Ferrari but easily out-qualified
Barichello (Ferrari) and Hakkinen.
When the lights went green Barichello made a good start
to follow his team mate, Schumacher, with Coulthard and Hakkinen behind him.
Barichello was doing a grand job of keeping the field behind him, while
Schumacher raced away at around half a second a lap.
However Coulthard was all over Barichello like a rash and
with a deft display of determination slipped past the Brazilian at the
hairpin on lap 21. Almost eight seconds adrift, Coulthard just pulled
Schumacher back in and was soon looking for a way around the wily German.
The first move came around lap 36 when Coulthard went right around the
outside of Schumacher at the hairpin, to be rewarded with some aggressive
wheel banging and was almost pushed off the track. The TV cameras picked up
on Coulthard’s single finger salute, showing he was less than pleased with
the tactics shown by Schumacher, a driver not known for sporting behaviour.
On lap 40 Coulthard made another move again at the
hairpin, this time going down the inside and with a little wheel banging
himself, pushed his way past Schumacher and from then on he was never
headed.
Schumacher hung on till lap 59 when his engine said
“enough” and Hakkinen was through as Schumacher slid into the hairpin on
his own oil. But the day belonged to Coulthard, the likeable Scot, who
toured away, leading his team mate by 15 seconds for a 1-2 McLaren victory.
Rubens Barichello brought his Ferrari in a long way back for third, with
Villeneuve (BAR), Ralf Schumacher (BMW Williams) and Trulli (Jordan) filling
the minor places.
At the Press Conference afterwards, Coulthard, with a
huge smile, said, “I have to apologise for my unsporting gesture”
referring to the one finger salute, but did say that he felt Schumacher had
tried to move him off the track - which he undoubtedly had! Schumacher, of
course,. being well known for helping other drivers into the scenery, as
Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve could attest over the past couple of
years.
This was Coulthard’s third victory this year, and the
most dominant one. With the championship now into its second half, the
points score is Schumacher (Ferrari) 56 points, Coulthard (McLaren Mercedes)
44, Hakkinen (McLaren Mercedes) 38 and Barichello (Ferrari) 32. With another
80 points up for grabs by the end of the year, it is still anyone’s game
between the top four cars. It also looks as if the next race in Austria on
July 16th will be another epic battle between Ferrari and McLaren Mercedes
teams, with Coulthard hoping to emulate previous Scottish world champions,
Jimmy Clark and Jackie Stewart.

PH3 Run 851
After 6 months of hard working in Belgium I came back to
Pattaya. A few things have changed, firstly the new sign up bar being the
Scandi bar. I missed the sign up but was in time to catch the bus. I had
just arrived that morning and I was in a rush and I saw familiar faces and
heard the usual stuff.
After a trip of 25 minutes we came to the A-site. Some
new shoes were christened and the hares came into the circle and told us
beware of the dogs and the paper starts over there. On On, Tampax took the
lead with Fossil and myself. A short but good run, some nice cracks were
running in front. I followed one with a very sexy. Anyway some nasty dogs in
my way and everything went back to normal. Tampax saw the On in and I
followed him. He took the wrong way and we found the bus and came in. People
told me never follow an idiot, (whatever that means). The usual talking
around the beer truck and then all of a sudden the rain came, the hares had
done a good job of finding an A-site with shelter provided, everybody was
pleased with this. The Grand master called the circle, hares on ice,
Spaghetti head, Glasshopper, Buttweasel, everybody says short and good run,
good work guys. Next was the lovely Ewoks raffle. A stray dog was enjoying
the circle until Cface said the magic word ‘sit’ then everything came
back ‘normally’. Returners in circle (myself included) and virgins, me
again with some Belgians Frog and myself do good work bringing Belgian
virgins. Anyway the bad R.A. Sir Airhead came in the circle and the party
began. Hares on ice Spaghetti Head, Glasshopper, Buttweasel, a stupid story
was told I don’t remember what about though. Chicken F and the Pope on
ice, Chicken F for receiving a 30-year-old postcard from T4 and the Pope
because he and F and Forget were last week’s hares and the T-shirt had
Aliens spelled wrong. Well Well some new names came up, the R.A. likes this
one, Brian Cooper for his new name Fag Bag, man he likes the cold holy
water. Boy George iced because he Bla bla bla when R.A. explaining something
in the circle. Richard Herbert who likes Bunjee jumping was welcomed
Who ate all the pies and Boy George iced next. One
anniversary Zorro 50 runs, good boy. Pies iced again for his birthday
together with Flying Frog and myself Fini, Chicken F sang the You fat b’s
song, Happy Birthday Mickey. Time for the hares song, a good version of an
Englebert Humperdink song ‘I want the last beer with you’ or was it
‘The last waltz’. The hash hymn next then off to the Rovers Return for
the last time as a hash bar, good time and good food, thanks Mick/Gareth.

Fitness Tips: Osteoporosis:
No Bones About It
by David Garred
Club Manager Dusit Resort Sports Club
G’Day All,
I have touched on this subject before but it is time to
add a bit more clarity to the bone issue. Bone is a living tissue that
constantly undergoes a process of resorption (removal) of old bone and the
formation of new. About one fifth of your skeleton is replaced each year
due to this process called remodelling. Peak bone density is reached
during the early thirties when more bone is formed than lost; then the
balance shifts, and more bone is lost than formed. Bone loss is a natural
part of the aging process. By age 70 or 80, a woman will have lost about
1/3 to 1/2 of her bone mass: A man’s bone loss starts from a higher
density and declines at a slower rate.
Osteoporosis affects over 20 million Americans,
primarily woman over the age of 50. During the remodelling process too
little bone is formed, or too much is lost, or in some cases, both. As a
result, bones become fragile and break easily: Osteoporosis-related
fractures occur most often in the hip, wrist, and spine. Fractured
vertebrae do heal, but they become compressed, and may mend in a wedge
shape. Over time, multiple fractures of the spine can result in a stooped
posture, a loss of height, and continual pain.
More research is needed to understand the cause of
osteoporosis, but some important factors have been indicated:
Genetics. The signs to watch for in older relatives
include curvature of the spine, loss of height, and chronic back pain.
Loss of Oestrogen. As the amount of oestrogen produced
declines, bone loss rises. Bone loss can be up to 7% for the first five
years after menopause.
Body Type. Thin, petite women are at a greater risk
because their bodies produce less oestrogen than a heavier woman’s body
does.
Diet. Women may be more vulnerable if their calcium
intake has been low since childhood.
Ethnicity. Caucasian and Asian woman have the highest
risk: Afro American woman are at a low, but significant risk.
Immobility. People who are bedridden or in a cast for
any length of time show evidence of bone loss from lack of use.
Alcohol decreases levels of calcium and vitamin D in
the body.
Until recently, diagnosis was not possible until the
disease was well advanced. Now diagnosis is conducted using the Dual
Energy X-Ray Absoptiometry (DEXA) or the new ultrasound technology. A
peripheral bone densitometer is used to screen for osteoporosis, and can
make one aware of low bone mass. Research now shows that aerobic exercise,
regular resistance training (weight lifting), along with the proper
amounts of calcium, will increase your bone density and help prevent
osteoporosis.

The
Bunker Boys’ Handicaps Revealed! Pattaya C.C. 23rd June 2000
On Friday 23rd June, twelve “ladies” from the
Bunker went to Pattaya Country Club for their annual Ladies Day event.
They played a Better Ball Stableford Pairs Competition. The winners were
Miss Winifred Latham and the golfing guru’s wife Mrs. Matilda Jones.
Between them they scored 49 Stableford points to take first prize. All the
“ladies” wore their Sunday best to add sparkle to the event. Miss
Lolita Mitchell even did a bit of short time in one of the Bunkers. Second
place went to Mrs. Kate Wilson and pretty Georgina Meigh. A good time was
had by all.
Pattaya Golf Society at Laem Chabang

In Division One, “Mr. Loy” was again victorious
with 37 Stableford points. Second was Swiss Peter Renggli, 33 points, and
tied third place were Paul “Houdini” Butler and Gary Hammel. In
division two, the in form Swede Claes Ernlund, 37 points took the honors.
In second place came steady lady golfer Annop (Bee) with 34 points, and
third, Neil Griffin with 33 points. Nearest the pins were Paul Bulter

Another record year for the Pattaya
Sports Club
More members, officers elected at AGM
“The Pattaya Sports Club had another record year,
enjoying 25% growth,” noted PSC President Pratheep “Peter” Malhotra
when he chaired the successful Annual General Meeting of the Pattaya
Sports Club Association on Wednesday, 21st June at the Town in Town Hotel.
Every
year in June, the PSC Association holds an Annual General meeting to
report on the previous year’s business, plan for the future, and perform
the important task of electing officers to run the Association and
implement the Association’s plans and policies.
In the election of officers, Pratheep Malhotra was
re-elected as President for another year, as was the Vice President Jim
Montgomery. Ron Herbert and Ivan Town were re-elected as Secretary and
Treasurer respectively. Dick Caggiano was once more appointed as the
Charter Members’ Representative. Bjarne Nielsen was re-elected as
Registrar, Harry Riley as Charity Chairman, Phil Sagar as Media and
Internet, Len Banfield as Darts Chairman, Carl Engel as Fishing Chairman
and John McAllen as Softball Chairman.
New officers elected were Peter Guasta as Social
Chairman and Herbie Ishinaga as Sports Promotion Chairman.
The positions as Chairman of Bowling, Golf, Tennis,
Computer and Public Relations were not filled on the night and will be
elected at extraordinary meetings at a later date.
In addition to officers’ elections, Fred Hornung and
John Moore were elected as Life Members in recognition of their services
to the Club.
The highlight of the evening was the strong vote in
favour of giving the Association the go ahead to purchase land on which to
construct an administration building. The overall consensus was that this
can only be favourable for the future benefit of the Club.

2nd Ossie Viljanen 2 down
3rd Anders Karlsson 3 down
England’s Mike Davies, after finishing second in two
other recent competitions, finally got to “blow the horn”. Playing off
26, Mike beat out Ossie Viljanen in a count back, and won the TAGGS Bogey
competition at Siam Country Club. This was Mike’s first win The
Alternative Gentlemen’s Golf Society, but it can be said we some
certainty it will not be his last. Ossie and Mike bother finished at “2
down” with Anders Karlsson taking the third spot with “3 down”.

Eastern Star
Two Man Scramble
1st Clive Bruce 64
George Jackson
2nd Ian Warwick 66.6
Larry Willett
3rd Stephen Beard 68.8
Dennis Willett
It was a pretty good group of golfers who made the trip
down to Ban Chang to play a Two Man Scramble at Eastern Star. Among the
teams were a couple of “ringers” who came down from Bangkok to show
the local boys how it is done. Ian Warwick and Larry Willett, both
card-carrying members of the Pattaya Sports Club, and both residents of
Krung Thep, had a great day and shot a scratch even par. With their
handicap allowance of 5.6 strokes, that translated to a 66.6 net.
The trouble is, if you’re going to “show up” the
locals, you best check out the competition first. Pattaya’s very own
version of Hogan and Snead, George “One Ball” Jackson and Clive “ I
dunno, I haven’t looked lately” Bruce, stole the show with a 69 off
the stick and a fine net score of 64. This was their second doubles win in
the past month, and good luck to the rest of us if they can keep this
partnership going.
TAGGS Chairman Stephen Beard partnered with Dennis
Willett to take the third spot with a 68.8.
Friday, June 30
Phoenix Country Club
Stableford
1st Juan Kendall 41 points
2nd Mike Davies 40 points
3rd Derek Reaper 40 points
That Costa Rican country and western singer is back in
town. Ex-LA Law and current Central American karaoke entrepreneur, Juan
Kendall is still crooning, but he ain’t singing the blues. Playing off a
twenty handicap, Senor Kendall had 21 points on the Lakes and 20 points in
the rain on the Ocean to win the TAGGS Stableford event at Phoenix. This
was his first win out of the Hare House since coming back to Pattaya and
it was the last win out of the Hare House for anyone.
Also playing in the last competition from Soi Post
Office was Derek Reaper. “Reap” shot a scratch 84 off sixteen and
couldn’t be blamed if he thought he had won. He didn’t even come in
second. That spot went to Mike Davies who had 40 points and beat out
“Reap” in a count back. Mike plays off 26 and his 40 points consisted
of holes where he four putted twice and three putted four times. If Mike
had been having an average day with the putter he would of won. If he had
been having a good day with the putter they would have had to call an
emergency meeting of the handicap committee.
Ken Crow does it again!
No
PSC party is complete without Papa Ray making his entrance.
The Pattaya Sports Club had their summer party on 28
June, at the Town In Town Hotel last week. This is P. S. C’s way of
saying thank you to the many men and women here that have worked and
supported the club throughout the year.
Ken Crow our party chairman bid adieu to the job that
he had done so well for so many years, for so many people, outdid himself
this time. Under Ken’s management the staff of the Town in Town Hotel
did an outstanding job by putting on a great International buffet,
complimented by excellent service for the 330 people who attended. Frank
Mack, a long time resident of Pattaya just happened to turn 81 years old
on that day, was surprised and thrilled when a birthday cake was presented
to him accompanied by the strains of Happy Birthday sung by the band. The
party was a great success; there was plenty of eating, drinking, visiting,
fun and dancing. As usual there were lots of prizes given away to the
lucky ticket holders, including a 5 Baht gold chain.
Frank
Mack is toasted by his many friends on his birthday.
Well done Ken and thank you very much for the many
years of service to the Pattaya Sports Club. Ken will not be going
anywhere, as in his own words he says, “From now on I would like to come
to the PSC parties just as a guest and have loads of fun” Yeah!
Steve Williams Wins First Time out
PSC Pattaya Golf Society with Bunker
On Tuesday the 20th June, 26 golfers from the bunker
went to play the difficult Khao Kheow Golf Course.
The winner in Division One, playing medal was Steve
Williams. It was Steve’s first game since returning from England and the
first time he had ever played Khao Kheow. He shot a commendable 2 under
par on a beautifully prepared course. From the yellow tees, second place,
tied, were Peter Renggli and Mr. ‘Loy’ Mitchell, both on five over
par.
In Division Two, playing Stableford, Kevin Wilson on 36
points came first, second was ‘Coffin’ John Preddy on 34 points and
third was Annop (Bee) on 32 points.
Nearest the pins this week were Tony Callen, Wilfred
Latham and Mr ‘Loy’ Mitchell twice.
Last week at Green Valley, nearest the pins were Tom
Waldron, Bill Jones, Garry Parkinson and Barry Holden.
Claus Ernlund and “Steady” Dave
Richards excel
Golf From Cafe Kroneborg
The Stableford Competition was held on Monday 26th June
at the Pattaya Country Club where some very good scores were posted.
Claus Ernlund was the winner with an astounding 45
points, followed by Philippe Bona with 40 points. Evan Trotman and Frank
Polizgothe rounded out the winners circle with 39 and 38 points
respectively. As customary the nearest the pins achievers deserve a
mention. They are, #5 Ebrahim, #7 Evan Trotman, #12 Dave Richardsand and
#16 Fred Geurs.
The Kronborg Monthly Mug is held every last Thursday of
the month. So on June the 29th sixteen golfers marched onto the fairways
of the ever-improving Eastern Star Golf Course. After a heated battle on
the greens the ever steady Dave Richards came out in front with a net 73
followed by a couple of net 74s from Dan Barusch and Jeff McLaury. These
gentlemen achieved the nearest to the pins awards. Pin #8 Dan Barusch and
#15 Ebrahim.
