Annual athletic games held at
Pattaya City School #3
Deputy Mayor Watana Chantanawaranon and city officials
presided at City School #3’s Annual Athletic Games on the morning of
August 4.
And
the winner is...
The games promote sport and healthy activities and
encourage good behavior whilst developing athletic skills in preparation
for city and regional level competitions.
The activities began with students parading onto the
athletic field prior to the games. Other students in a group from the
“Amazing Thailand Show” performed for the spectators.
The athletic games included football, volleyball,
takraw, chair-ball, track and broad jumping events with both girls and
boys participating.
Hakkinen wins in Hungary
Erja the Ice Maiden wins another salad bowl
The world’s most highly paid dodgem jockeys put on the
dullest show in Hungary last weekend. Racing at the Hungaroring, which
should be renamed the Boringoring, Hakkinen in the McLaren Mercedes won the
start and was never headed. Schumacher the elder in the Ferrari finished in
second with Hakkinen’s teammate, David Coulthard third.
Erja
the Ice Maiden
At the start, Coulthard was caught cat-napping and was
lucky to regain third after the first corner, while Happy Hakkinen
sling-shotted past Schumacher and sailed off into the distance.
To attempt to at least enliven the first lap, Villeneuve
in the BAR gave Pedro de la Rosa’s Arrows an unlucky strike, losing his
front wing and puncturing the Arrows tyre. Both went to the pits, never to
be in contention again, other than being mobile hazards.
With the actual driving on the track stuff being so dull,
the pits were the most exciting parts of the race, with Jean Alesi in the
Prost enjoying them so much that after three stops he decided to stay there
after completing only 11 laps. His team mate and staunch unionist, Nick
Heidfeld, working on the principle of “one out - all out” brought his
Prost into the pits too, which it then refused to leave on lap 22. Exit the
Prost team stage left.
Johnny Herbert, driving the spare Jaguar as his real one
had expired before the race even began (the Series I XJ6 syndrome again),
obviously had his mind on his new career in America, because the two times
he was passed he promptly spun with the surprise of it all. Fortunately he
did not have to drive the car all the way to the finish as this Jaguar also
expired 10 laps before the end.
Other drivers who eventually called it a day were Diniz
in the Sauber, Fisichella in the Benetton and Mazzacane in the Minardi.
Various reasons for the retirals were given by their teams, but it was
obvious the real reason was terminal boredom.
Hakkinen slowed over the last 10 laps and still finished
7.9 seconds in front of Michael Schumacher, with Coulthard 0.5 seconds
behind and then Barrichello (Ferrari) 4th, 35 seconds further back, then
Ralf Schumacher in the BMW Willams and Frentzen in the Jordan 6th.
At the end, Hakkinen, who has obviously been sent by team
boss Ron Dennis for smiling lessons, did manage a brief flicker of a display
of his dental equipment, but wife Erja the Ice Maiden, seemed unimpressed
with yet another salad bowl for the mantelpiece.
The Championship standings with five rounds to go are
Hakkinen 64, M. Schumacher 62, Coulthard 58 and Barichello 49. The next
round will be at Spa on the 27th of this month. Let us hope it is a little
more exciting than the Hungarian one. The chap next to me at the bar in
Delaney’s fell asleep!
Harry Riley’s Birthday Bogey Boogie
Big Steve Donovan, whose gimpy hip belies the fact that
the man can play golf, beat Green Valley five up in a Bogey competition on
Friday, the 11th of August. Steve played the front nine “all square”,
but he blitzed the back nine with a scratch 38 and finished the day on top
of the leader board.
This was no ordinary golf competition. This was Harry
Riley’s birthday party and a joint venture between TAGGS, playing out of
The Haven, and Lewiinski’s/Orchid Golf Society. The men from
Lewiinski’s, who have a fetish for girls named Monica and big Cuban
cigars, showed why they are probably the hottest golfers in Pattaya. They
took eight out of the top ten places. Steve Beard showed why he is one of
the hottest businessmen in Pattaya. He got all those guys from Lewiinski’s
checking out his new hotel, The Haven, and then gave out TAGGS golf shirts
as prizes.
Guest of Honor at the prize giving was new PSC Golf Chairman Dennis
Willett. Dennis is a consummate gentleman and expressed no preference for
one group or the other. Nor did he partake in the truly delicious Mexican
buffet that was free to all the participants. He did, however, hotfoot it up
to Delaney’s after the ceremonies, probably to let Kim Fletcher know that
he has some competition in the Mexican food battle.

Large Cobia in the Waters
|
On July 31st, Frank
Collins and Curtis Hinz, fishing for the Local Fish & Trips Bar,
landed a pair of Cobia. With the help of Captain Dang, these two
fishermen caught a 50 pounder and a 38 pounder. The team was
participating in the Pattaya Sports Club promoted Fishing Tournament for
the month of July.

PH3 Run 857
Well it was one year ago and I was the scribe. One year
gone, already. It was befitting that on Groupies memoriam run such a large
number of hashers turned out. A pleasant drive up past Wat Yan to the
picturesque A-site for this A to B run. The type of A to B run that
Pattaya hash likes, where nothing moves from the A-site but the runners.
Hares Flying Frog and Fini gave us directions but not before the new shoes
were christened.
It turned into a good run, going through some new
areas. When back to the A-B site it was grazing on a grand scale. The
circle roped off with red and blue ribbons and pictures of Groupie. The
hares with their private table and chairs, champagne and parasol. I always
thought that they were an odd couple.
Eventually the circle was formed, and a toast to our
gone but not forgotten friend, Groupie. Ewok with the raffle, and then the
second raffle provided by the hares. A selection of beers plus T-shirts,
well done hares. Ice the hares; Fini and Froggy did a good job. Good food,
good A-site, good shirt design. No hash s@#t this week, although Fini is
already a hash s@#t.
Returners who wanted a down down, Papa Whisky and one
other came in, eventually the circle filled with returners. Then it was
the Bad R.A. Sir Airhead. The hares were iced, but good praise was
bestowed upon the boys. Hash s@#ts including F Nose who is a leaver. Then
Drippy with his mum wearing the shirt of her choice, which was not a hash
one, but then it got interesting, iced water, and if Drippy lied when mum
was asked questions about her son, he got wet and wetter, in fact he was
dripping wet. I spoke with Drips mum later, she said he was a little sod,
but she liked the water. There were other sinners, but I was controlling
my little sod.
Anniversaries, Spunk Bubble 100 runs. Zorro,
Rottweiler, Neville Nud F 50 run mugs. Rottweiler 5 hare hat. Rottweiler
(again) and Uncle Fester, two birthdays. Benny the Nerd said their
combined age was 150 years. Someone said that Uncle Fester was born before
the First World War. He’s wearing well for his age. Happy birthday to
you both.
Hares song, we had a rendition of Lily the Pink. Did
you notice how the circle was thinning out rapidly with the people who
came in cars all wanting to get back to Delaney’s. They never run out of
food at Delaney’s, or did they want their favourite seats? Leaving the
circle before the hash hymn is a sin. Then the rest of us were off to
Delaney’s for Mexican night. The East Coast Band was playing well. Rusty
Bullet Hole bought me a pint of Kilkenny, thanks. If Groupie were there in
person and not in our hearts he would have enjoyed himself.

Tippy’s earns darts championship
With 12 wins in 12 weeks, Tippy’s has guaranteed
themselves the championship of the Premier Darts League. This will be
Tippy’s 7th championship. Tippy’s secured their championship with an
incredible 3-bars team win in one night - The Bunker/Jack’s/Country
House. Pook did, however, find the kindness in his heart to “give” the
beer leg to Mr. “Loy”.
Meanwhile, The Ritz finally awoke, winning their last
two games in an attempt to get away from the wooden spoon.

Fitness Tips: On the Seventh
Day
by David Garred
Club Manager Dusit Resort Sports Club
G’day Pattaya,
Before we get into the Fitness tips for this week I
have to make a bit of a charity plug. The Jesters MC are having their
annual charity fair this year on the 16th of September. Absolutely heaps
of things going on that day for kids of all ages, all parts of the
community are throwing their support behind the cause.
As in last year, the Chonburi Siam Steel Mills Services
have come forward again as the Platinum sponsor to back the organisation
of this charity fair. And what a Fair is promised! From bouncy castles,
art contests, clowns, balloons, raffles with children’s prizes, puppet
shows, tug-o-war, fun children’s activities, live music and even beer
tents for Dad, this is Pattaya’s Family Fun Day helping those less
fortunate families with needy children.
Speaking of Tug-O-War, the committee organising the
Charity Fair has asked me to run the Tug-O-War on the day. If you are
interested in getting a team entered for the competition please contact me
directly between now and the 15th of September here at Dusit Resort Sports
Club so I can get you the rest of the details. It is a great cause and
you’ll all have a great day.
Above is a picture of last year’s final of the
Tug-O-War, fought between the Hare house and Universe Gym. Hare house were
eventual winners 2-1.
Back to business: Treating yourself. Yesterday I had a
conversation with a member who has just returned to the club from being
transferred overseas for a couple of years. When she was here before she
was a very active lady, coming 3-5 times a week and working out very hard;
this was a big part of her lifestyle.
Just before she came back to Thailand she gave birth to
her first child and during the pregnancy she was not able to exercise. As
a result she has put on what she says is a large amount of weight.
That’s where I come in.
This lady is feeling very anxious about the weight and
has vowed to burn it off. Great, a very positive attitude makes my job
easier. She has about the same amount of time on her hands as before,
possibly a little less with the baby now but fortunately for both her and
I, the young fella likes the staff so he’ll be happy to stay with them
in the childcare room while mum exercises. Exercise is looking like no
problem then.
That brings up the other side of the issue: with output
being under control what about the input? Crash diet to go with the
exercise, what about the zone diet or the cabbage only diet, even the no
carbohydrates or better yet, let’s see what all the Hollywood stars are
doing to starve themselves at the moment.
Thankfully, none of this was a consideration as she
already knows that dieting is a farce, it simply does not work. She
already knew that 95% of people gain back more weight than they lost in
the first place within a year of coming off the diet, whichever diet they
were on.
No readers I am not sensationalising, 95% is a fact.
Why lie when a fact like that exists on my side of the argument.
As I said we were having this conversation about how to
make it all happen, getting her back in shape. I was having lunch at the
time and she was walking past on her way to the club when she saw me in
the Dusit Coffee shop.
Quietly tucking into my Larb Gai, she sat down and
jokingly said that she expected me to be noshing into a huge fried meal.
My response was not today, that will be on Saturday I think.
She was shocked; “gob smacked” is the phrase in the
UK. After picking her jaw up off the floor the question was put forward,
“why Saturday?” Thus we come to the reason for this article.
My response was: “Saturday is my reward day, after a
hard week’s work (Yes, I actually do), regular exercise (4-5sessions)
and eating all the right foods (5 food groups, balanced) I treat
myself.” Saturday night I am usually consuming the odd cleansing ale
with the rest of the Panthers after a relatively large meal. Italian,
British, Mexican, the nationality changes but it is always large, often
fried and heavy sauces or gravy.
My muscle mass is slowly (frustratingly slowly,
actually) increasing, body fat is reducing and general health is quite
good - these are in line with my training goals.
I don’t crave foods thus I don’t binge on anything
and blow my weight out so everything remains under control. This is in
line with all the recommendations we are told to give to our members as
professional health and fitness instructors.
Readers, for the sake of your training, to help you
achieve your goals, please, treat yourselves. On the seventh day, rest,
relax, have a meal of exactly what you want, have a drink and enjoy
yourselves. This is the best way to ensure that the other 6 days stay
productive and you can continue on the path to achieving your fitness
goals.

Cafe Ole jumps in front of PSC Friday
Bowling League
Cafe Ole won 4-0 over the VFW Post 9876 team last week
to catapult Captain Jon’s team into first place. Lewiinski’s dropped
to second after gaining only one point against a tough House of the Golden
Coin team. Captain Mio bowled the best game of the day with a 209 and her
teammate Peter knocked down 201 pins in the final game against
Lewiinski’s to clinch the game by 109 pins.
Toy on the Snowman team had the best series of the day

PSC TAGGS... golf from The Haven
Monday, August 7 - Treasure Hill (Stableford)
1st: Malcolm Clare, 35 points
2nd: Keith Fortt, 32 points
3rd: John Kendall, 30 points
Malcolm “The Snowman” Clare won his fourth 2000
TAGGS singles competition at Treasure Hill on Monday the 7th of August.
Playing the Stableford format, Malcolm had 35 points on one of the
toughest courses on the Eastern Seaboard. Mr. Clare’s continued good
form so soon after jumping ship raises the suspicion that he has built
himself a driving range aboard the stern deck.
Keith Fortt, who like Malcolm plays off 26, took the
second spot on the podium with 32 points. Juan Kendall who had 30 points
off nineteen took third place.
Wednesday, August 9 - Phoenix (Medal)
1st: Jimmy Little, 88, 69 net
2nd: Alvin Crowder, 94, 70 net
3rd: Roland Piechocki, 92, 71 net
Jimmy Little, who has played regularly with TAGGS since
retiring to Pattaya several years ago, can be counted on to win a handful
of competitions during a year. Not this year. Playing a medal tournament
at Phoenix, Jimmy won his first TAGGS singles event in 2000. He has been
the “bridesmaid” five times, and come in third six times, but it took
him until August to get his first win. Jimmy shot an 88 on the Lakes/Ocean
combo at Phoenix.
A mere one stroke behind was Alvin Crowder who shot 94
off 24 for a net seventy and his first ever appearance on the Haven
podium. Roland Piechocki took third place with a net seventy-one.
Delaney’s start ‘Friendly Golf
Society’
Delaney’s have decided to capitalise on their
successful and well established major tournaments - the Delaney’s
Funhill Cup, last run on May 12th this year, and the Delaney’s Irish
Open coming up next on October 6th. Starting next week on Tuesday 22nd
August, Delaney’s are organising a fortnightly competition at Eastern
Star, leaving Delaney’s at 10.00 a.m. (transport provided), for an 11.00
a.m. tee-off. The format will alternate between ‘Four Ball Better
Ball’ and ‘Two Man Scramble’. Prize giving will be around 4.00 p.m.
at Eastern Star.
To join Delaney’s Friendly Golf Society, just see Kim
(it was his idea) or Khun Aum at Delaney’s, or Mike Franklin for a
Membership Application form. You just need two photos for your DFGS Member
Card to be processed.
There is no registration fee to join, and entry fees
for the fortnightly competitions are B.150 for members and B.200 for
non-members. The Delaney’s Friendly Golf Society Member Card qualifies
for discounts at Delaney’s Pattaya of 15% off food and 10% off drinks,
including Happy Hour.
Members joining between now and the end of October will
receive Free Breakfast vouchers for the competition days up to October
31st.
The full Irish Breakfast is available from 09.00 a.m.,
and in the evening on Tuesdays it is Pasta Night, with ‘all you can
eat’, made to order by the Chef, for just B.150.
It sounds like a fun day out, so make Tuesday
‘Delaney’s Day’.

Dennis Willet named new PSC Golf Chairman
Pattaya Sports Club Golf Committee Update
Dennis Willet, avid golfer and long-time resident of
Pattaya, has been named the new Pattaya Sports Club Golf Chairman. Dennis
brings to the chair experience and an in-depth knowledge of the rules of
golf.
Mike Franklin, who did an admirable job as PSC Golf
Chairman, stepped down from the post at the 2000 PSC AGM. Jim Montgomery
had been Acting Golf Chairman until Dennis Willet was named to assume the
Chair.
The Pattaya Sports Club Golf Committee has now been
expanded to 9 members. Dennis Willet (Chairman), Jim Montgomery, Bill
Davis, Dave Richardson, Herbie Ishinaga, George Bennison, Alan Stephens,
Bill Thompson and Bernie Tuppin.
Before turning the Chair over to Dennis Willet, Jim
Montgomery issued the following statement:
“I would personally like to thank the Bunker, Haven,
Lewiinski’s and Cafe Kronborg for providing an excellent choice of golf
outings with various formats. Because of you the Pattaya Sports Club has
grown at a rapid pace, allowing us to provide an increasing amount of
charitable assistance to the Eastern Seaboard needy. Also, thanks to you
and the good will of the many golf courses that we play, we are attracting
more and more golfers from other countries to visit Pattaya to enjoy the
great golf here. This is good for the many businesses in Pattaya as well
as the PSC.
The PSC Golf Committee has defined its interim
responsibilities to its members and the club. They are to maintain USGA
Handicaps, arrange course bookings for all venues, coordination/assistance
for major club tournaments and to provide any other assistance required
concerning golf (A formal request should be presented to the committee if
assistance is required).
The committee agreed that since the PSC is a member of
the USGA that the official handicap system of the Pattaya Sports Club is
the USGA system and all paid up members who meet the requirements for a
PSC USGA handicap may apply for one regardless of nationality. However, we
feel that the CONGU system is a workable system and see no problems with
venues using that handicap system. A PSC member will be allowed only one
handicap, either CONGU or USGA. Procedures are now being worked out for
anyone who wishes to change from one handicap system to another and will
be announced soon. The handicap committee made up of myself, Dennis
Willet, Bill Thompson and Alan Stephens intends to monitor USGA handicaps
very closely and are working on procedures to insure all USGA members
comply with USGA handicap rules. A series of warning letters will be given
to members who do not comply and handicaps may be adjusted accordingly.”
