Petty Officer First Class Banlyysak Duangson wins Pattaya International Triathlon 2000

Petty Officer First Class Banlyysak Duangson won the Olympic Division of the Pattaya International Triathlon 2000 with a time of 2 hours 23 minutes 42 seconds.

Over 300 people entered the grueling test of strength and stamina starting at 7.00 a.m. on October 22 from the Pattaya Park Beach Resort. International athletes were competing for trophies in the name of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.

Cycle...

The National Triathlon Association and Pattaya City organized the event to encourage young people to participate in athletic activities as an alternative to drugs, to promote tourism and to display the city’s capability to organize international level sporting events.

The triathlon was divided into three categories: an Olympic Distance (1.5 kilometer swim, 40 k bicycle race and a 10 k run), a Spring Distance (750 meter swim, 20 k bicycle race and a 5 k run), and a Short Sprint Distance (400 meter swim, 10 k bicycle race and a 3 k run).

Swim...

The swimming portion of the triathlon took place off Pattaya Beach in front of the Pattaya Park Beach Resort. The bicycle and running portions were along a stretch of roads from Jomtien Beach - Thepprasit - Sukhumvit - South Pattaya - 3rd Road and Pratamnak Road, ending up back at Pattaya Park.

Kong Jiajie finished second in the Olympic Division with a time of 2.28.32. Chief Master Sergeant Paisan Saengwirun placed third with a time of 2.34.40 hours.

...and run!

In the Sprint Distance, Saksiri Pongjaemjaeng won with a time of 1.32.39; Wiwat Chirasutirak finished second with a time of 1.51.55; and Santikorn Wichitarapornkul placed third with a time of 2.05.26.

Corporal Kreuksak Chonkratok won the Short Sprint Distance with a time of 51 minutes 32 seconds. Sutisak Dechapaibul finished second with 52.33, while Rungroj Khakhai took third with a time of 55.33.

Pattaya mayor Pairat Suttithamrongsawat opened the triathlon, assisted by TAT Region 3 office director Manit Bunchim, and president of the National Triathlon Association, Wijit Sittinawin.

Huge shark landed in PSC October tournament

Tim Bobos, fishing with the Pacific Brass & Copper team, came home with a huge 250-pound bull shark on Wednesday October 18. This was the first shark of this type that we have seen in these waters. It took Tim more than an hour to boat this monster, and he said that at one time he thought he might have to have some help in the struggle. The shark was caught off Koh Khrum and will surely take the Pattaya Sports Club fishing prize for the month of October. Others on the team were Andy Lafferty, Peter Fuches, and Frank Collins. They were fishing from captain Ting’s boat out of Bang Saray.

Thailand Grand Touring Car meeting at Bira

German drivers don't win everything

Last Sunday, the ground at the Bira race circuit shook with the roar of the powerful Grand Touring cars. These highly modified and lightweight vehicles belong to one of the fastest categories in Thailand motor sport, and they certainly turned on a great spectacle.

Last minute instructions for the German driver

“Pete” held Pole position in the fearsome Toyota Celica, sponsored in part by the No Fear Company, but when the lights turned green the car got scared and he was engulfed. The best start was from the 5th row, with Chonsawas in the lurid green Mitsubishi GT rocketing into the lead from Suthipong in the mid engine MR2. It was not Pete’s day, as only five laps later the Celica was in the shrubbery and he was walking back to the pits.

The big mover was young driver Nattapong, in the ex-German works team BMW, who began picking his way up through the field, and by half distance had passed everyone other than the flying green Mitsubishi. A great scrap ensued, with Nattapong and Chonsawas swapping places, until an indiscretion by the young driver saw him slip down the order.

With eleven laps to run, Nattapong was 10 seconds behind the MR2 in 2nd place, but began hauling it in at around a second a lap. Two laps to go and Nattapong was challenging, but the BMW went off song and he held position, eventually finishing 3rd and six seconds behind Suthipong’s MR2, while the clear winner was Chonsawas’ Mitsubishi.

Support category was the AIM Concept cars, with 16 identical sports-racers on the grid. Pole was held by Thomas, a young German driver, and like a certain Mr Schumacher was not the best starter, dropping back to 6th at the end of the first lap. There was action all the way through the pack, with Thomas getting up to the leaders by lap ten. From there on, the drivers in the leading bunch swapped places lap after lap, and sometimes even corner after corner, till eventually Sant and Thomas broke free, the two squabbling over the bitumen all the way till the final corner, when the German had to back off to avoid collision. The winner was Sant, from Thomas and Vutthikan. The AIM people are to be congratulated on this excellent formula.

Sunday Quiz admin changes

Bar owners of Pattaya’s popular Sunday quiz league have agreed on important changes to the way the weekly competitions are organized.

Barry Kenyon, who has been responsible for all quiz matters for four years, had asked to stand down altogether. However, he has agreed in a compromise to continue as question setter only.

Responsibility for collecting the answers, judging the appeals and notifying the results will pass to Ken Osborne. He will also pick up the tab for making any emergency decisions when sudden problems arise.

Details of the new arrangement were agreed by bar owners at a meeting last week.

Barry said, “Ken has stepped forward at the right time to ensure the quizzes go on. There will be teething problems and quizzers need to give him their full support in the early days.”

Similar proposals will be discussed by bars participating in the Wednesday quiz when that season finishes next month.

Fitness Tips: Mystery bike rider (part one)

G’day Pattaya,

I’ve had several frightening conversations with Dusit Sports and Rugby club members over the last week. It is surprising how many of them have run into people or work with colleagues that are on diet pills. The conversations were frightening because I know the risks involved when using these drugs. The amount of stress they put on your vital organs is just not worth the risk. Not only that, but for 95% of the users of these products the taking of pills to reduce weight is an act in futility.

Of all people dieting to achieve weight loss, around 5% have actual medical conditions that require some type of augmentation to get some weight off, the rest are just looking for an easy way out.

World wide fact: 95 people out of every 100 going on diets and using diet industry products to augment the loss actually gain back more weight than they lost when on the diet within 1 year of completing the diet.

Some think they can avoid this statistic by eating normally again while still taking the product. Yep, the weight may stay off, but for the sake of feeling and looking terrible as well as an exponential increase in the risk of heart disease to top a long list of potentially fatal and debilitating diseases and organ dysfunction.

Come on guys, get real, get off your rear ends and do it the only way that actually can produce the results, exercise and healthy eating.

And now for something completely different

Prior to sitting down to start my column I was in an extremely positive mood and still am even having just written the above (sorry for the slightly negative tone) opening to this week’s column. Part of the good mood comes from amongst other things the great work and public good feeling generated at the Jesters Children’s Charity Fair. The Jesters MC did a sterling job, deserving the huge amount of support shown by the local community. It was quite heartening for me, not due to a very low level of involvement but living in a community that can get truly good things done.

The bike ride is the best part of the day to warrant mention in a health and fitness column in a newspaper.

Before I go on, let me just say that this in not a plug for a mate of mine. Yes, the man responsible for this achievement is a mate, a good one; nonetheless he is also a strong supporter of the rugby club and cricket club that I am deeply involved with.

All of that aside, by virtue of my profession and knowing this individual quite well I can relay the highlights of a great story whilst giving him the public ‘pat on the back’ he so richly deserves.

Picture a guy who has not exercised for the sake of exercise since high school, some 30 odd years ago, has worked in the pub / bar industry his entire life and drinks a fair amount of alcohol every single work night. The only regular activity would be Hash House Harriers (again a fair amount of beer and cheer) running at a comfortable speed (once a week) and running up and down the touchline at Panthers Rugby matches (once every 2 months).

Have you guessed who he is yet? Find out next week in part two of the “mystery bike rider”...

News on the golf scene

From Mike Franklin

The PSC Discount Program is bigger than ever with discounts in well over 100 outlets in Pattaya. If you have returned to Pattaya recently, don’t forget to renew your annual membership at the PSC Office in Soi Diana, still just B.400

A reminder that The Bunker is now making weekly outings to the Par 3 golf course at the Asia Hotel. A good way of improving that short game. See Roy Mitchell at the Bunker. Competitions are Thursdays leaving the Bunker at 2 pm.

November is here and the month kicks off with Bjarne Nielsen’s’ Banana Scramble on Monday November 6th at Siam Country Club. This is a four player Team Scramble teeing off from 10.00 am followed by a BBQ - Spread Dinner back at the Cafe Kronborg. The entry fee is only B.200 with all proceeds going to charity.

The 20th CAN-AM takes place at Siam Country Club on Saturday November 11th. If you played last year through the invitation allocation given to Pattaya Sports Club, then you should qualify for an invitation this year. You need to contact Dick Caggiano, through Khun Or at the PSC Office, Soi Diana.

The following Friday, November 17th, is the second Diana Gold Charity Tournament run by the Diana Group. Full details in this issue. Suffice to say, this is a tournament with a difference as there will be a One Baht Gold technical prize on every hole. Over B.130,000 value prizes in gold, just for the technical prizes. The charity is the Chonburi Juvenile and Family Court Observation and Protection Center for children on remand.

Even further ahead on Thursday November 30th is scheduled Papa Ray Rogers annual Thanksgiving Turkey Tournament with his usual Thanksgiving supper and warm hospitality back at his house.

Now the bad news and a word about green fees. It has been muted for several months now that the members of the East Coast Golf Courses Association are increasing green fees from November 1st. So don’t be surprised to be paying more when you turn up at a golf course. But remember, the girl behind the reception desk is firstly not responsible, and secondly is unable to do anything about it, as she is merely carrying out instructions. A formal policy statement requested from the Association has not been forthcoming, so it would be best to speak to the manager at the course, or consult with your regular playing group for clarification.

Finally, have you fitted those soft spikes yet? If you don’t have them on by November 1st, you won’t be able to tee-off! You have been warned!

More Golf News in a couple of weeks- in the meantime, I am told that good weather is on the way. Enjoy your golf!

“Dog Leg” rises to the occasion

Pattaya Golf Society from the Bunker

On Tuesday, 24th October, fifteen golfers from the Bunker braved the weather for a Stableford competition at Sri Racha International Golf Club. The course was very wet but not unplayable. Mutterings were heard from the elderly and infirm because buggies were not allowed, but this did not stop George Meigh, who scored 37 points, or one under par, to take first place.

In second place came the ever-improving Burt “Remy” Guy with 35 points. There was a tie for third place between Peter “Dog Leg” Allcorn and Len Jones, both scoring 33 points.

Nearest-the-pin winners were Burt Guy, Gordon McKnight, the aforementioned “Dog Leg” and Wilf Latham...again.

Congratulations are in order to Bunker “regulars” Paul Butler and Len Jones for winning their respective divisions in the recent T.Q. Masters event, and to Danny Greer for his two long drive prizes and a nearest-the-pin award in the same event.

Pattaya Bush Hash House Harriers PBH3 Run No.1

On the overcast afternoon of Saturday 14th October, Shenanigans Irish Pub was inundated with excited and devoted runners from all over Thailand. All were keen to sign up for Pattaya’s very first monthly Bush Hash House Harriers run!

After one hour of very hectic activity, more than 120 Hashers were on their way to the very beautiful ‘A’site of Phu Luang Hydro Gym situated just under 36 km from Pattaya. Then, at approx. 3:15pm, and after being introduced and welcomed by the Founders and Hares (Charlie Manson and Tampax) the runners were on their way for an experience that would take the short runners 1 hour, and the long runners just under 2 hours before they returned to the ‘A’ site.

One of the Hares (Charlie Manson) accompanied the main group and would eventually follow the short runners back to the ‘A’ site. The trail took the runners (and walkers) across dirt tracks, hills, pineapple and tapioca fields, water filled ditches, dried up creeks and even through rubber tree plantations.

After approx. 25 minutes, the runners came across Tampax who split up the two groups (short and long runners) at a point that would first lead the long runners and then approx. 15 minutes later the short runners to the first water stop situated along a very nice shaded dirt track. Charlie Manson then followed the short runners on their trail back to the ‘A’ site and Tampax accompanied the long runners for a good slog around farming country that would eventually lead them to the second and last water stop.

The last section for the long runners would allow them to really stretch out and return to the ‘A’ site tired but contented. Most of the runners were back by approx. 5:15pm and from then on it was into the showers, swimming pool and plenty of beer, soft drinks, etc.

After over 2hrs of relaxing and drinking, it was time for the circle. This started with Twiggy and the raffle that included gifts from some of Thailand’s other Hash organisations, free drinks/food vouchers for use at some of Pattaya’s restaurants and bars plus complementary run vouchers from the Pattaya Bush H3.

Then it was time for the Bush GM Glasshopper to take over and introduce the Hashers of the other Hash groups: Bardick from the Bangkok Hash, GM Plastered of the Bangkok Hash Harriet’s, GM Bruce Weeks of the Siam Sunday Hash, GM Great Poo Tender from the Bangkok Hash and GM Chicken F of the Pattaya Dirt Hash. GM Glasshopper also brought in fellow members of the Bush Hash team: Charlie Manson, Tampax, Semen Stayin, Fairy Dinking Sort of Poofta, Twiggy, Sharon Tate and Fossil.

The Bush RA Who Ate All The Pies dished out punishments that included ice and Hash S@#t for the Hares, and ice for Superman of the Chang Mai Hash as he had previously denied that he was a hash founder. Apparently, he founded the Chang Mai Male Hash! The guy who came in ‘first’ on the short run was Steen Leksoe and for the long run it was Mathew Holgardo. Both these guys’ should know that they are unique in being the first back on the very first Bush run.

Sir Airhead of the Pattaya Monday Hash was finally outdone and iced by GM Plastered as it was exposed that the Bangkok Hash Harriet’s will soon reach 1000 runs (Airhead has only done 666)! More punishments were dished out that included the young lad Zorro who was iced for taking a lift back to the ‘A’site on a moped after trying to complete the long run. Finally, it was time for Semen Stayin to lead the Hash Hymn and then it was back to Pattaya and the end of a very good day out.

PH3 Run 868

Just when you thought I’ve had enough of Australia after the Olympic games were finished, here we go again with the special Aussie run, the brainchild of Festering Squid Jazzer and Katoy A. M. So, G’Day hashers, hope you have plenty of grub in ya tucker-bags, lets all go down the billabong and meet waltzing Matilda, beware the swagman though. What a load of Bollocks!

We sent these fellows over to Australia from England with fancy ankle bracelets a couple of hundred years ago and they still can’t speak bloody English. So lets see how the two Aussie PH3 virgin hares got on today.

Good A-site, which has been used several times in the last couple of years, most of you will remember when P T had his heart attack whilst laying a run here, and F and F became hash hero for getting him to hospital, then later in the day he rescued Sweet Balls who got lost on the run. I was the first on site at 1615 followed shortly after by Rusty Bullet Hole, we were then surrounded by about 30 cattle with bells ringing away, then the farmer arrived to move them away down the on-in trail. I tried to bribe the farmer to leave the cattle in the circle area for when the hares and the bus showed up but I don’t think he understood.

Hashers started arriving after the cattle had moved on, good to see my old mate Teeny Weeny back again ready for haring the joint Loy Kratong/Octoberfest Run on Nov 13th. The Hash Hero and the hash heart attack victim of this site then arrived; P T must like coming back here just to check that he is still alive.

After what seemed like forever the bus finally arrived at 1655. Late sign ups took about 15 minutes, then the circle was called; new shoes were dealt with, quite a few this week, good to see Hammer back keeping the Pattaya shoe industry on its feet. He had help today from Teeny Weeny and Salvatore plus a few that I didn’t recognise.

The Hares dressed like Ned Kelly were then called into the circle to explain how they were going to lose probably about 40 hashers today. Well, they didn’t actually say that, but when you have a 1 hour plus walk ahead of you and only 40 minutes of daylight left it was pretty obvious to most people what would happen.

Aussie colours of green and yellow for the checks and back checks with Aussie prizes at each check. Everybody was given a green plastic bag to carry the prizes found on the run. So off the run started at 1720. At the first check everybody picked up a new pair of Aussie socks, then the run fell apart for me. Teeny Weeny headed off on his shortcut around the edge of the lake, I told him you can’t get back around that way, but off he went. Everyone else went off in different directions shouting on-on. The trail master Boy George was running around in circles trying to find out who was on the correct trail. I ended up on a false trail like many others who were all regrouping at the first check. By this time the first signs of darkness were setting in so I made what I thought was a wise decision and went back to the A-site.

The hares were setting up the BBQ ready for the runners coming in. Norm ‘Showbag’ was doing the cooking and a fine job he did of it. Runners started coming in from all different directions, mainly from losing the trail or because of the fading light. The first runner to do the full run was in after about 35 minutes; he said he did the full run but he was short of one prize in his little green plastic bag. It was now dark at 1800 and still about 50 hashers had not returned. 1830 arrived and still about 40 hashers were out in the darkness, this included our famous FRB’s Tampax and Fossil. At this time Sir Airhead and F and F set off back down the on-in trail with spotlights to help anyone they could find - Hash heroes.

At 1840 Teeny Weeny finally finished his 1 hr 20 min shortcut. At 1855 Tampax arrived with Apples Turnover. Tampax brightened up though when he was told his running mate Fossil was still out there. The hares were starting to realise they had made a cock up, the long journey due to the holiday weekend traffic, and using check backs in a forest - just a couple of things that spring to mind.

Then the next act of nature happened at 1900 hrs which the hares must take full responsibility for: the heavens opened and flooded the a-site, the plastic macs and umbrellas came out and then the stampede for the bus. F and F and Sir Airhead arrived back about 1920 hrs. They were going to come back out at 5 a.m. and search the area if the missing hashers didn’t show up at the Scandi Bar.

The rain eased off a little at 1925 so a quick circle was called and down downs were given to whoever was in the circle whilst the hares and Boy George were placed on the ice. The hares’ song and the hash hymn were taken care of on the bus journey back to the Scandi Bar. The food at bar was the usual excellent spread that Pegleg puts on, thanks Erik.

After we had been back about an hour Fossil and the rest showed up at 2110 hrs. Katoy A M, one of the hares, had apparently set off back to the A-site to do his own search and rescue mission. I hope he didn’t get lost on one of his own check backs. I know for a fact that the hares had put one hell of a lot of work into this run, they had subsidised the food and all the prizes that were given out so thanks guys, you will probably be dealt with at next week’s circle. I think your new head wear is being sorted out whilst I write. Oh by the way don’t worry about the weather next week, shelter has been provided in case it rains.
