Sinterklaas visited again!
The Dutch and Belgian community hosted the annual arrival of Sinterklaas to Thailand on Saturday November 18.
Sinterklaas and his Black Pete’s
arrived at Pala Beach by boat.
For the Dutch speaking community, November is a very exciting month because Sinterklaas arrives to reward with gifts and goodies those who have been good.
In Holland, Sinterklaas is celebrated instead of Father Christmas and every year he manages to find his way to Thailand.
Sinterklaas originated when a child named Nicolaas was born in Turkey. His parents were very wealthy and the boy received everything that he asked for;
however, they also taught him the importance of sharing. So he gave many toys to the poor children and then later in life he became the Bishop of Myra and he continued to do
many things to help the poor people.
The children celebrated
Sinterklaas’ arrival with a little party
When Nicolaas was an old man he bought a palace in Spain and legend says that he is still there today. The task of helping the poor was so big that he
enlisted the help of many people called the Moors. Today they are known as Black Pete’s or Zwarte Pieten, because of the dark colour of their skin. An annual custom of
Sinterklaas is to give the children special sweets called pepernoten and speculaas and presents on his birthday, which is the 5th of December.
Sinterklaas and his Black Pete’s recently arrived at Pala Beach in Ban Chang by boat. Many children and adults were there to give him a warm welcome and
they celebrated with a special party.
The students and staff of the Dutch School and St. Andrews International School look forward to the 4th of December when Sinterklaas will visit the school
arriving on his horse!
Young students tackle ‘The Scottish Play’
Year 5 students at the International School of the Regents entertained fellows, parents and teachers recently with a captivating performance of William
Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’.
Damien Lambrinos, who played Duncan
in the ISR production of ‘Macbeth’, flanked by servants Yosuke Sawamura and Mathew Taylor.
Murder most foul, treachery and witchcraft were the main ingredients of the drama, served up lavishly by the youngsters and savoured by an appreciative
audience.
Wearing splendid costumes they had made themselves, the young thespians delivered their lines with clarity and a confidence that belied their years.
The drama was part of an ISR ‘English Week’ series of events; poetry, debate and a celebration of world literature were some of the other themes that
contributed to the resounding success of the programme.
2nd Christmas Party 2000 for the Homes for the Underprivileged Children (Formerly Street Children)
Last year Bangkok Pattaya Hospital held the first Christmas Party for the Homes for the Underprivileged children (formerly street children) at the hospital
on December 11, 1999. We had very good success and were able to raise 120,000 baht for the children to use for their school needs, uniforms, food and other daily supplies. We
also received a large amount of donations in terms of toys, sports equipment, food and gifts, the children’s lives have been enriched throughout the year by your
generosity.
We see a great need to continue to support these children to make sure that there is a continuity of love and support from the community for the coming
year. We plan to hold the 2nd Christmas party on Saturday December 9 at 10 a.m. - noon in the main lobby of Bangkok Pattaya Hospital. This year we have 57 boys (6-15) and 12
girls (5-14) years old from 2 homes. Of course, Santa Claus and his helpers have already replied to our invitation and will definitely be here on this joyful day to be with
the children.
We would like to extend our invitation to you to join us in helping these children. If you would like further information about the festivities or how you
can help, please contact us at the International Department of Bangkok Pattaya Hospital.
This year, the following will be on the program:

International rugby comes to ISE
The International School Eastern Seaboard recently played host to a team of young rugby players from Garden International School.
In bright sunshine, but fortunately low humidity, parents, teachers and classmates
were treated to an enthusiastic display of touch rugby. Both teams played with determination and tenacity despite the fact that most of the players are relative newcomers to
the game. At the end of the day, both schools could boast two victories; a fitting end to this inaugural competition.
After the game, the ISE team invited the GIS team players to share refreshments in a time-honoured rugby tradition - combatants on the field but comrades
off.
Although the ISE rugby club is in its first year (mostly 8th and 9th graders) the students have demonstrated a keenness for the sport. The team coach, Paul
Sexton, had this to say, “Given that we practice only once a week, and on Friday afternoons to boot, the students have made a great deal of progress in a short period of
time. The team represents a diverse mixture of nationalities. While some of the team hail from familiar rugby nations, others come from countries less often associated with
the world of rugby, namely Korea, Germany and the U.S.A.”
Hopefully we will hear more about rugby from ISE in the future.
Combind Schools XI in Top Form!
Story and photo by Nic Salmon
The Combined Schools football team, which includes players from the International School of the Eastern Seaboard (ISE), the International School of the
Regents (ISR) and Garden International School (GIS), showed sparkling form last week with an emphatic 4-0 victory over St John’s International School of Bangkok. The game
was played at the ISR with both teams showing considerable skill; the visitors fielded a strong side but, as the game progressed, could find no answer to the penetrating runs
of the Combined Schools’ forwards and no way through a stalwart defence.
Combined Schools midfielder Sam, of
ISE, breaks through the St John’s defence.
Yohei, a student at the ISE, capped a great game with a hat-trick, whilst his schoolmate Sam completed the tally with a superbly struck effort; midfielder
Em (GIS) provided great service throughout the game and near misses from Ant and Joe (ISR) showed great promise for the future.
Combined Schools trainer Dale Farrington, who teaches at the ISR, was very pleased with the spirit shown by his players and their keenness to work as a
team. “Our passing game has improved immensely during the short time the players have been together and this is one aspect of play that we work hard at during our weekly
training sessions,” he remarked, adding that he feels the squad has the potential to produce one of the best youth sides in the area, and judging by recent performances, he
is probably right!
