Phuket Island Lager International
Rugby 10s
“The Clive Williamson memorial trophy”
Day One - Saphan Hin Stadium, Phuket, May 26: In a
carnival atmosphere at Saphan Hin Stadium seventeen teams from around
South East Asia assembled for an action packed weekend of rugby. The
monsoon rains eased off overnight to provide a soft, damp surface at start
of play. The medical crew led by Dr Francis Mettle of the Bangkok - Phuket
Hospital was on hand to patch up battered and bruised bodies with the odd
sutra thrown in.
Pattaya
Panthers atop “box hill”
The Phuket Barbarians, ably led by John “The
Geezer” Hunt, Hong Kong Vandals (2000 Cup semi finalists) and
Barrelhouse RFC from Dubai showed early dominance on the first day of
round robin matches; each team maintained 100% records with clean sheets.
Singapore Bucks with former Singapore Captain Martin
“Schlonger” Williams leading from the “Blind” side also won all
three of their preliminary games, grinding out wins against spirited
competition from the Phuket Vagabonds, Bangkok Japanese and The Old Bill.
Last year’s finalists Pattaya Panthers showed good
form on the first day with two wins and only one defeat, elusive winger
Dave (Forrest) Garred scoring a brace of tries. Pattaya’s superior
kicking ensured victory over the Seoul Survivors in a game of two tries
apiece.
The Singapore Recreation Club and the Manila Nomads
also ended the day with 2 wins and a single reverse. Strong running by
Nomads’ back Trevor Day was paramount in their success on the day. The
Taipei Baboons lost a close encounter against Singapore Recreation Club
but beat the British Club to ensure an appearance in the Plate
competition. The US Air Force flyers based in Osan, Korea edged out their
Aussie counterparts the RAAF Tigers from Butterworth, Malaysia to claim a
place in the Plate Semi Finals.
Last year’s winners, the British Club from Bangkok
disappointed on the first day with three successive defeats. The Old Bill
plodded to two defeats but laid down the law to overcome the Vagabonds and
clinch a place in the Cup Quarter-Finals.
The Phuket Vagabonds lost their first two games but
with a new hooker came from behind to beat the Bangkok Japanese 12-10. The
Hong Kong Bulls fared worse than their senior counterparts the Vandals,
succumbing to three defeats on the first day.
The Pot Bellied Pigs played some vintage rugby winning
both of their games against representative sides assembled from the four
qualifying groups.
Day Two - Saphan Hin Stadium, Phuket, May 27: In the
Cup Quarter-Finals the Phuket Barbarians overcame stiff opposition to
defeat the Manila Nomads 12-0 after heroic work in the forwards by Barcley
Morison & Chris.
Hong Kong Vandals comfortably beat the Singapore
Recreation Club 31-0. The Old Bill superheroes, despite their Spiderman
outfits could not stop Barrelhouse RFC continuing their good run with a
44-5 drubbing. The biggest cheer of the day being when the old bill went
over in the dying seconds of the game.
The Singapore Bucks prevailed in a close encounter
against the Pattaya Panthers with a last minute try, orchestrated by the
schlonger with great backing up by Tommy Dane, winning 12-7.
In the Plate Semi-Finals the Taipei Baboons dominated
against a tiring Osan RFC, winning 40-0; Seoul survived a strong onslaught
by the Bangkok Japanese, defeating them 24-12.
The British Club bounced back from their first day
sorrows with the return of their itinerant former captain and scrumhalf
Rod Kerr, beating the RAAF Tigers 20-12 in the Bowl Semi-Finals. The
Phuket Vagabonds continued their success on the field with a 30-0
demolition of the Hong Kong Bulls, youngsters Graham Tyndall and Simon
Wynn-Davies showing superb pace.
The Cup Semi-Finals saw a tiring Phuket Barbarians side
go down 25-0 against the stronger Hong Kong Vandals. Barrelhouse RFC won a
bruising encounter 12-7 after extra time against the Singapore Bucks.
In the Bowl Final the revitalized British Club excelled
against a weary Phuket Vagabonds side, winning 36-0.
The Plate Final was a tight affair with Taipei Baboons
just managing to overcome the Seoul Survivors in a 22-17 victory.
The Cup Final saw the excesses of the previous
evening’s activities and the physical nature of the weekend’s rugby
finally taking its toll against the Dubai team. Barrelhouse RFC lost a
creditable 17-0 to the immaculate Hong Kong Vandals - a team that did not
concede a single point in the whole competition!

Schumachers, younger and elder dominate
Canadian GP
Hakkinen thankful there are not three
Schumacher brothers
Ralf Schumacher in the BMW Williams took a well
deserved victory over his elder brother Michael in the Ferrari at the
Canadian GP. Mika Hakkinen was third in the McLaren Mercedes, after a
steady, if uninspired run from 8th on the grid.

courtesy of Planet-F1 and Bothwell Photographics
At the start, Michael Schumacher and brother Ralf
quickly pulled away from the rest of the field, headed by David Coulthard
in the McLaren Mercedes, with Barichello (Ferrari), Trulli (Jordan), Panis
(BAR) and the rest all line astern. That is, the rest minus Eddie Irvine
whose Jaguar pounced on Nick Heidfeld’s Sauber, and Fisichella in the
Benetton who monstered the rear of his team mate Jenson Button and they
all retired.
Next to go were Juan Pablo Montoya in his BMW Williams
who attacked a wall and Rubens Barichello, who joined the Colombian’s
accident. A period under the safety car ensued, but as soon as it came in,
the brothers Schumacher raced away from the pack by a second a lap.
Ralf clearly had the legs over Michael, and it was only
by cunning placement of his car on the track did the Ferrari stay in
front; however, as soon as Michael went for the pits, Ralf put together a
stunning string of laps, including a lap record and by the time he pulled
in for fuel and tyres he was 29 seconds in front. This was enough to get
him in and out still in front of his brother’s Ferrari and he was never
to be headed from there, winning comfortably.
Coulthard’s engine expired in a big way on lap 45,
Trulli’s brakes broke, Zonta (replacing Frentzen in the other Jordan)
ran into the back of Raikkonen and Verstappen’s Arrows also ran out of
brakes, as did Panis and Villeneuve in the other BAR.
In all this, Hakkinen managed to keep going and
inherited 3rd place from Raikkonen in 4th who soldiered on with bits of
his rear wing missing, then the mercurial French Sicilian Jean Alesi 5th
in the Prost and the final points scorer was de la Rosa in the Jaguar.
Alesi did doughnuts on the track and threw his helmet into the crowd with
delight. The second points finish in a row for the pig of a Prost.
The Championship standings are M. Schumacher 58,
Coulthard 40, Barichello 24, R. Schumacher 22. The next round is at the
Nurburgring in Germany on 24th June.
Tue rolls 605 series
Pattaya Sports Club Friday Bowling League
Sultans of Swing won three points from the first place
team, Three Sisters, behind great bowling by Tue who had games of 201, 225,
179 and a 605 series. Mai, Three Sisters, bowled a 212 second game to help
her team win their only point.
200
bowlers from left to right Kran, Jeed and Tue
Shakey Pete’s split with the Winchester Club at two
points apiece. Nual with Winchester bowled a good 539 series.
Cafe Kronborg split with VFW Post 9876 at two points
each. Kran, Cafe Kronborg led all bowlers in this match with a 205 game, 546
series.
Up and coming Cafe Ole took three points from a slumping
House of the Golden Coin team. Golden Coin captain Mio’s 525 series along
with Somrak’s 517 series was not enough to beat a good bowling Cafe Ole
team with Captain Jeed bowling a 202 game and a 514 series.

Man U atop Thursday Lawn Bowling League
As usual Man Utd top the league. Team captain Red Devil
Duncan and Everton Mick took the game to the Windmills. The 2 super fit
Dutch lads tried in vain but to no avail. The Carlsberg Kids showed their
true class by beating the semi-professional team the Kalooki Kids. It was
a nightmare for the Andycaps when they met the Dream Team. The clash of
the titans Tommy’s Bar v the Hammers was a well deserved draw. Keep
tuned for the continuing saga at Thailand’s only Lawn Bowling League.
A handicap singles competition is to be held 30th June
continuing on 1st July. 32 entries are required, a small entry fee gives
anybody the chance of winning 1 or more of the 12,000 baht worth of
prizes. Please visit the Bowling Green or web site www.lawnbowlsasia.com
or telephone club secretary Dave on 01-5786967. Why not just come along to
check out the club or watch a bowling match? Everyone is welcome.

Fitness Tips: Liver
Cleansing (Part 1)
G’day Readers,
I hope all in the world for you is fine. Before we get
started on the tips side of things this week I have something rather
important to head off right here and now. It has come to my attention that
there is a rumor travelling around our little community here regarding my
status here at Dusit Resort Pattaya. Clearly put, I have not resigned and
am not intending to leave for quite some time. Further, the relationship
between my employer and myself is at an all time high. So that little
story that seems to rear its ugly head every 12 months can be laughed at
once again.
Let’s get back to taking care of ourselves and our
families, shall we?
Liver Cleansing: Fact or Fiction?
Can a cleansed liver help you lose weight and live
longer?
Naturopaths have long promoted liver cleansing diets,
but it was not until Dr Sandra Cabot published her best selling book,
The Liver Cleansing Diet, that most people had heard of this type of
dietary program.
The advocates of liver cleansing claim that liver
dysfunction can have symptoms ranging from poor digestion and headaches to
sugar cravings, high blood pressure and weight gain. These claims may
sound believable, but does a dirty liver really cause all these health
problems and should we be recommending liver cleansing diets for weight
loss?
Do I need to clean my liver?
There is plenty of evidence to show that the amount of
fat in the liver can build up in people who are either diabetic, grossly
overweight, have had hepatitis, or drink large amounts of alcohol.
However, there is no evidence that the major cause of weight gain is liver
dysfunction. At major obesity conferences around the world, researchers
are focussing their efforts on genetics, diet and physical activity as the
key factors influencing weight gain. Dirty livers don’t rate a mention,
which simply reflects its low importance as a weight loss treatment.
You don’t have to do anything special to clean your
liver for general health. You can keep your liver and other organs
functioning properly by living a healthy lifestyle; in other words, by
limiting your alcohol consumption, drinking plenty of water, being active
and maintaining a healthy weight. These have long been the components of
sensible weight management programs.
Next week: Are liver cleansing diets healthy? And Why
do people say liver cleansing works?
Carpe’ Diem
Heavy going for Three Sisters Golf at Siam
CC
Overnight rain diminished the Monday morning crowd for
golf on June 4, as no buggies were available for the wounded or super
seniors who need a ride these days. As the golf course was quite soggy,
relief was given to the players to lift, clean and place their balls.
A total of 13 players turned out for the day that started
as 3 four balls and eventually Paul Kraft as a single, until Paul could
catch up with the last group to be integrated. Did the wife fail to wake you
Paul? Or was it something to do with the previous days barbecue sponsored by
Dene Mundy?
Neither Dene, Kenny Mau nor Herbie were able to play, as
they were all in the wounded category. Luckily this did not prevent them
from joining us for the postmortem at the local drinking spot. Tully came
along with the pictures from the previous week’s celebration for Vic Cross
and good ones they are, shame we couldn’t get them in to the report last
week. Although the camera wielder was trying to record the event for the
birthday honoree, Jerry Lien managed to figure into more than his ration;
ten to be exact.
The week’s bragging rights go to Gerry Carpenter with a
respectable 37 Stableford points, not bad under the conditions of the day.
In second was Bob Jess with 36 while the cellar score this week was recorded
by Jerry Lien. Dougie Powell gets the nod for the week’s best joke. A lot
of mediocre scores were posted but the participants prefer to be nameless,
ego problems guys?
Some of the gang are off to spend a couple of days at
Khao Soi Dao for two rounds of golf at that magnificent setting. Any
worthwhile action will be duly reported.
Klaus’s turn on top this week
IPGC TAGGS Golf from The Haven
Monday 4th June - Khao Kheow (Stableford)
1st: Michel Vogeler, 31 pts
2nd: Jens Gunnarsson, 30 pts
3rd: Mark Campbell, 27 pts
Michel Vogeler, with his 36 handicap, carded 31 points
to “win” the day, which was played in appalling conditions, although
the course was in excellent shape.
Jens Gunnarsson, playing off 23, scored 30 points to
finish 2nd, whilst Mark Campbell scored 27 points off his 11 handicap to
finish 3rd.
The least said about today’s competition the better.
Suffice to say, it was a non-counting for handicap day.
Wednesday 6th June - Pattaya Country Club (medal)
1st: Bob Morrison, 69
2nd: Stephen Beard, 70
3rd: Bob Jess, 77
Another very tough day on the course and a very
competitive entry saw Bob Morrison winning off his new 17 handicap, very
closely followed by Stephen Beard with the rest of the field some way
back.
Richard welcomed back B.J. Smith from Australia and
local boy, Bob Jess, as well as new member Alan Olcott from the USA.
Friday 8th June - Eastern Star (Stableford)
1st: Klaus Schackt, 40 pts
2nd: Mike Franklin, 35 pts
3rd: Michel Vogeler, 34 pts
Klaus Schackt, after reading last week’s Pattaya
Mail, was determined to finish above Oradee which, as a very religious
man, he considered to be the right position, and he did so in style
winning by 5 strokes from second placed ex chairman of golf Mike Franklin.
Mike, who has been very busy with many activities,
including organizing the first corporate Tesco Lotus Charity Golf
Tournament held at the Thai Country Club, which incidentally raised over 3
million baht in one day for the Thai Red Cross Society, was also extremely
pleased that Banjob had in fact gone down over the previous weekend and
was equally determined that it would be his turn this week. Unfortunately,
the standard scratch of 70 on the day meant he will have to wait a little
longer for that happy event.
Meanwhile, Richard welcomed back Neville Steward from Australia.
Marshall, Johansson and Swanson win PSC
Golf
Pattaya Sports Club Golf from Cafe Kronborg
Monday, June 4 - Sattahip (Stableford)
Fred Marshall took 1st place with an amazing 38 points at
Sattahip on June 4. Ebrahim finished 2nd with 32 points, followed by Derek
Brooks in 3rd with 31 and Magnus Johansson 4th on a count back from Brian
Holden and Rob Brown, all with 30!
Near pins: N-7 Ebrahim and W-8 Brian Holden.
Thursday, June 7 - Bangphra (Stableford)
Magnus Johansson took the A flight with a magnificent 41
points playing off an 11 handicap! Phillipe Berra finished 2nd on 34 and
Ebrahim placed 3rd with 34 points.
B flight was won by John Swanson with 36. Arthur Bailey
came 2nd with 35 and Fred Marshall (again!) was 3rd on 34 points.
Near pins: #2 Phillipe Berra, #8 Derek Brook, #12 Bob
Davis and #17 Jim Barclay.
Stan says Cheers to the Sunshine Boys
IPGC Pattaya Golf Society from the Bunker
On Tuesday, 5th June, the Bunker Boys travelled to the
immaculate championship course at Khao Kheow for their weekly Stableford
competition. This time it was a sentimental occasion as it marked the
anniversary of the passing of an old Bunker friend, Colin Morgan.
The course was well maintained with the greens slower
than usual but, as always, it rewards the accurate hitter and this was
perfect for Stan “The Man” Axon who came out on top with 39 points,
and was awarded the Colin Morgan Memorial Trophy. He was chased all the
way by the two Sunshine Boys, Len Jones and John Preddy, once again
revelling in their own private duel on the course. Eventually both fell
short, recording 36 points each to be runners-up.
Nearest-the-pin awards went to Dale Shier and the
transport manager, John Preddy. The Bunker Banana Booby went to Big Ron
Millward for his retirement after 14 holes, his blistered hands having
recorded 164 shots by that time! The Bunker lucky draw was won by Graham
Val.
The Sandman slays Siam
On Friday, 8th June, the Bunker Boys travelled the
well-worn track to Siam Country Club for a medal competition. It was a
perfect day for golf and good below par scores were the order of the day.
Mr. Loy shrugged off his dislike for Siam’s slow
greens to record a score of one under, whilst the Sandman, Gordon
McKnight, massacred division one with a personal best score of 66.
Division two found Sunny and the Pathfinder, Chris
John, sharing second place with net 71s only to lose out to David Johnson
who scored an incredible net 65.
Nearest-the-pin awards went to Chris John, Chris Coffey
and two to Mr. Loy. The Bunker Banana Booby was awarded to caddy Anong for
her ceaseless efforts to help Big Ron improve his score! The lucky draw
was won by the Sandman for the second successive week. Quite a good day
for Gordon McKnight, all in all!

Never out of the first two all week, Larry showed why
he was a single figure handicapper years ago. Now troubled with arthritic

with his illness, he found a remedy to keep his illness at bay whilst
playing golf.

PH3 Run 900 - The Betty Boop Run
In my usual frenzy to finish work and get to the hash
in time, my small blue car and I could be seen bombing down the Sukhumvit
towards a Soi called Paradise. Paradise I asked myself; are they sure? I
arrived as the bus was trying to save its axles whilst entering the A
site. The A site was stunning - a lake, trees and to cap it all a
photographic shoot of top super models.... but no, I was mistaken, this
bevy of beauties were non other than the participants of the joint Betty
Boop and 900th run of the PH3.
Long ones, short ones, big fat juicy ones; the array
was spectacular. A Hawaiian Hula Girl complete with coconuts, a green
damsel in distress with fur! And a standard lamp (whoops mistook your legs
Seaman S). I was amazed to see such a variety of ladies of the second
category and all with a bigger chests than me!
Jazzer was looking particularly whorelike - I suggest
he start frequenting some bars where the girls cost more than 29 baht to
get some top tips. Chicken Fellow looked ready to catch a wave in his surf
frock and Macho Surrogate Sucker looked splendid in orange. Peg Leg looked
sexy in Maroon and was proud to show off stockings and suzzies!
The circle was called and our GM Boy George announced
that our delicate spy Agent C would be GM as it was a special run - his
100th! George loves George! Get a life George!
The hares were called in and appeared wearing my
Granny’s old curtains run up into some dresses. The hares were one man
down but explained the run and let the woolly backs know that there was
livestock roaming should the need take them.
New shoes were dealt with and yet again the shoe
industry of Thailand was given a boost as Hammer and A H introduced their
ladies of this week! And they were off. The usual grazing commenced and
some 45 minutes later the first runner was back - a Streaker with the horn
and a g-string in a blue dress. As it was not Tampax I prepared myself for
the excuse that was sure to follow. Eaten alive by a pack of female
cannibals was top of the list but we decided that Tampax could not even
hope for that. Better luck next week!
As the runners came in they congratulated the flower
power maidens and the Honey Bunny for a great run and well laid - or they
would be later. The circle was a long and amusing affair. The hares were
iced and Snowflake stood in for Sexy Slim who was AWOL and sat on Needles
dick! The raffle was conducted by yours truly and Boy George won 20
shooters. Thanks for all the extra prizes and to Idaho who seems to have a
limitless supply of Okinawa shirts.
Boy George was tormented by the group for a severe case
of my name’s George and I’m all right for making sure that his
trinkets were ready for the day of his hallowed 100th run! Unlike the rest
of us that patiently wait for weeks, months or years in some cases! The
crowd also reminded our GM that the run was actually the 900th outing for
this famous institution and not just his 100th. Belt up George. But
congratulations anyway.
Babies Arm/Brain was given the bog seat as this
week’s hash trash when he left his knickers behind - don’t worry it
happens to us all. The competition winners were Ringworm for being the
biggest weirdo, Charlie Manson for being the ugliest Katoy ever and to
Honey Bunny for wearing a Fab Frock! All in all the run was great, the A
site was great and the company was the greatest. Thanks to Classroom 2 for
entertaining us. See you next week Pinky!
