St. Andrews International School recently enjoyed its annual Book Week

Guess who I am?

In the run-up to St Andrews Book Day extravaganza, children from Nursery to Year 9 busied themselves in book making. By that Friday every pupil had successfully produced a wonderful variety of books which were displayed for all to see in a purpose built reading room in the school foyer. Other activities during the week for older students included doing book reviews, character analysis and exploring different genre. The senior pupils also had fun during the week reading to the younger children in shared reading activities.

Pippi Longstocking - what a cutie!

The week drew to a close with an exciting and colourful parade of the children’s favourite book characters. It was lovely to see children (and parents) who had gone to great lengths to come up with some creative costumes indeed. Little Red Riding Hood marched alongside the Big Bad Wolf. The Very Hungry Caterpillar was followed by a cluster of Roman Soldiers.

Teachers get in on the act (Mr. Slee is that you?)

As well as being thoroughly entertained by the Parent Teacher Group’s performance, which was based on the book My Little Sister ate one Hare! and had us all in stitches, we managed to squeeze in a game of “Guess the Character”, hosted by compere extraordinaire, the man with no hair, Mr. Wheeler. The audience took great delight in listening to the clues, trying to figure out which book character was on stage. This was the final chapter in what proved to be a bookilicious week for the pupils at St. Andrews.

St. Andrews celebrated Loy Krathong in traditional style

Mariko floating her Krathong

The Loy Krathong festival was celebrated in traditional Thai style by the students and teachers at St. Andrews International School, Rayong on Wednesday 31st October. It was lovely to see so many students, parents and teachers wearing Thai costumes and joining in the festivities with enthusiasm.

The day started with the whole school making their own krathongs from natural materials. The teachers greatly appreciated the expertise and advice provided by parents and the Thai staff at school. The end results were just beautiful and the judges had a difficult job choosing the best one from each key stage.

Some year 2 students with their Krathongs

After finishing their krathongs everyone paraded to the hard-court to show off all their hard work and participate in the Loy Krathong assembly. A variety of musical items, dances and traditional games performed by the Year 7, 8 and 9 students had everyone thoroughly entertained. This was followed by a Muay Thai boxing display, which was definitely a crowd pleaser.

When the assembly had finished, the students and staff proceeded to the front of the school to float their krathongs and make a wish for the New Year. A big thank you to everyone at St. Andrews International School for making our Loy Krathong festival so successful.

Loy Krathong Celebrations at ISR

Loy Krathong was celebrated in style at the International School of the Regents and even the torrential thunderstorm which raged overhead in the afternoon didn’t succeed in dampening anyone’s spirits! The celebrations started in the morning for the younger children and finished in the evening with secondary students.

Graceful secondary school dancers with their feathery fans

Children from Pre-nursery to Year 2 celebrated first and there was much excited ‘dressing up’ in Loy Krathong costumes before going to the Roundhouse theatre and being presented on stage. A parade to the swimming pool followed for the floating of the krathongs.

The afternoon’s activities for children in Years 3 to 6 were a little delayed because of a tremendous storm, but eventually got off to a rousing start with the drum band leading the parade. Year 6 students presented the story of Loy Krathong and the programme included dances by students and staff, and a Noppamas competition. The audience was given the most difficult job of voting and had to choose a Noppamas King and Queen from all the pretty girls and handsome young men. After everyone was presented on stage Kevin and Urassaya were awarded the titles of Noppamas King and Queen.

In the spotlight: glittering Noppamas entrants on stage at the Loy Krathong celebrations for secondary students at ISR.

Secondary students celebrated in the evening with a fantastic range of dance and music presentations and hotly contested competitions. The dances were superb and ranged from eye-catching numbers with gorgeous feathered fans to energetic routines with Thai dance-drums. There was a high turnout for the Noppamas competition and the judges had the almost impossible task of choosing a winner from the crowd of beautiful girls. Eventually Kwansuda from Year 8 was declared as this year’s junior winner and Emma from Year 12 carried off the senior sash. The evening finished with a ‘bang’ with fireworks! A huge thanks must go to everyone who participated and to the Thai teaching department for co-ordinating such an enjoyable celebration.
