‘Rest of the World’ fast into Irish Coffee while Asian Team celebrates
by Mike Franklin
On Friday 25th January, in the sunny setting of a well
prepared Eastern Star Course, and with no visiting groups of golfers to be
seen, forty nine lady golfers teed off for the much anticipated match
‘Asia vs. The Rest of the World’, competing for the Shenanigans Asia
Challenge Cup.
In all, thirteen countries were represented to make the
‘Rest of the World’ team truly international, with the strongest
contingent coming from Holland, no doubt inspired by Captain Kitty Stor.
Surprisingly, just twenty-two of the field were farang with the mainly
Thai Asia Team generously lending players to balance the sides.
(L
to R) Asian Team Captain Usa Chaiyusit, prize giving emcee Mike Franklin
and Rest of the World Team Captain Kitty Stor share a moment in the
spotlight after a great day of golf. Stay tuned - the next women’s
tournament should be coming soon!
Asia Team captain, Usa ‘Noi’ Chaiyusit did a fine
job leading her side with intense tactical discussion on the Tuesday
prior, after the Shenanigans fortnightly outing, and again on the day
before the tournament when sixteen of the Asian Team were rounded up for a
practice round at Eastern Star. The pre-match get together at Shenanigans
produced further encouragement and the Asian ladies must have felt they
had a slight edge as many play regularly together and are familiar with
the Eastern Star layout.
Not all of the Rest of the World ladies had that
advantage or, perhaps, the same feeling that they were representing their
country for the first time, as the Thai women clearly did.
Nevertheless, everyone played the best they could and
when it was not going too well they certainly had fun. The camaraderie on
the course was a joy to see, and friendships were clearly established.
At the halfway turn there was a special treat in store.
Shenanigans landlord, Kim Fletcher, resplendent in black tie, accompanied
by an even more impressive and distinguished Steve Ryser in white tails
and top hat, served the ladies with chilled champagne, chef-made curry
puffs and sausage rolls to fuel them for their second nine holes. If that
was not enough, the special touch was the long-stemmed red rose given to
each of the competitors to wish them well. That idea was down to Steve
Ryser, who also brought a tear to wife Toy’s eye as he was wearing the
white wedding suit from 12 years back and she already on an emotional high
from recently sinking a birdie putt.
That done, the battle of the second nine holes took
place in good spirits and some good golf too.
Scoring was combined Stableford, an Asian Pair
competing against two R o’W, and the pair with the most Stableford
points winning that group match and a point for the team.
Pairings and teeing order were decided by the two
captains submitting pairs and teeing order independently, and tournament
director, Mike Franklin, matching them together.
The final results produced a decisive win for Asia 8
1/2 points to the Rest of the World 4. The Stableford points tally was
Asia: 825 to Ro’W 719.
Asia took the lion’s share of the technical prizes,
the four near pins sponsored by Kizwa ‘OK’ Ladies Golf fashions.
The best pairs Stableford combined scores came from Mam
Trayling & Kwuan for Asia; and Wil Agerbeek & Joke van Amelsvoort
for the Rest of the World. Best individual scores came from Wanvilai for
Asia, and Wipa, one of the Asian Team seconded to the Rest of the World.
The party back at Shenanigans was everything one could
hope for after such a good day at Eastern Star. The new international
carvery was the menu of the day and the prize giving proceedings, emceed
by Mike Franklin and assisted by Day Captain Tam, featured many prizes and
trophies culminating in the presentation of the Shenanigans Asia Challenge
Cup to the victorious Asian Team with each team member receiving a
splendid blue and gold engraved Beladon coffee mug. Not forgetting the
sporting ‘Rest of the World’ Team players either, who each received a
Shenanigans Irish Coffee voucher which was redeemed with remarkable speed.
Wayne Ogonoski and Tony Stevens were efficiently active
at registration and carried out the scoring. Bill Hurd was visibly active
as a tee marshal at Eastern Star with Khun Jirawat and Khun Sririla
covering course and clubhouse services. From Shenanigans, Khun Wanchai did
all the hard work superbly at the halfway turn and afterwards in the
clubhouse.
The return match, which received a unanimous approval
from all the players, is not in doubt and it is just the date which needs
to be fixed. Careful attention to other event dates and availability of
ladies from Bangkok groups should ensure an even bigger turnout next time.
For now, it was just another good Shenanigans friendly
golf day, and an especially good day for Ladies Golf.

J&M Bar wins PSC President’s Trophy
J&M Bar from Soi Yodsak won the Pattaya Sports Club
President’s Fishing Trophy for the year ending 2001. The winning fish of
the 2-day tournament was a magnificent specimen of a Queen Mackerel
weighing in at 19 lbs., one of the biggest known to have been caught in
local waters.
John Evans from Shropshire, England was the outright
winner. John is a well known coarse fisherman, and prior to his coming to
Thailand he was the English secretary for coarse fishing, an extremely
busy and important job.
Frank
Collins (left), Pattaya Sports Club fishing chairman presents the
President’s Trophy to John Evans (right) as his many admirers from
J&M Bar look to get into the picture.
Second place went to Middy Campbell, also of J&M
Bar, who weighed in with a 16 lb. Spanish Mackerel.
Boat captains were Captain Dang with the winner and
Captain Savang with the runner-up.
PSC Fishing Chairman Frank Collins, who also competed
with his two teams from Fish ‘n Trips, presented the Trophy to John
Evans on behalf of the Pattaya Sports Club. The Eternal Trophy will stay
in the halls of the PSC’s administration building.
The PSC Presidents Cup fishing tournament has
traditionally been held in December but as of 2002 will be annually held
in June. The reason for the change has been the unsuitable weather during
December for the last 3 years. To enter this competition, one must have
taken part in at least 2 events prior to June and thereafter the
competition qualifying events will increase to five.
For further information contact PSC fishing chairman Frank Collins at
the Fish & Trips Bar on Soi Yodsak or Middy Campbell at J&M Bar on
Soi Yodsak.
61-year-old amputee swims 15 km from Dusit Resort to Larn Island
An avid swimmer and former combat veteran, 61 year old
Navee Khanuchdis not only defies the passing of time, but has overcome a
traumatic leg amputation which he underwent while serving in the Thai
military. Attempting to set a new long distance swimming record, Navee
swam 15 kilometers from the Dusit Hotel Resort in Pattaya to Larn Island
on January 22. Beginning his feat of endurance, Navee started his swim at
11 a.m. from North Pattaya Beach and swam to the island in 6 hours and 10
minutes.
Navee
Khanuchdis is still an avid swimmer at 61.
Navee has performed other long-distance swims in
Pattaya waters. In 1988 he swam a 2 km distance from Pattaya to Koh Chun,
and in February of last year he completed a swim from Larn Island to
Jomtien Beach, a distance of 10 km, in 5 hours flat.
Navee estimated that the swim last Tuesday would take
him approximately 7 hours, depending on winds and currents, but he shaved
the time off considerably, and 6 hours and 10 minutes was an amazing
accomplishment.
Accompanied by members from the Pattaya Ocean Rescue
Unit, he was provided with security and supplied with shark repellent,
although Navee was little bothered about the matter of sharks.
The one legged man is a father of two children and
makes his trade as a merchant after holding the rank of sergeant in the
Thai military 27 years ago. Asked about any special preparation for his
record setting swims, Navee said only that he often swims the Chao Phraya
River and that bananas are a regular part of his diet.
Born on January 15, 1941, Navee served in the Thai
military with a marines communication unit, a mechanized army unit, and
was with a special forces unit assigned to the Special Warfare Center in
Lop Buri. He lost his leg in an explosion while serving with Headquarters
Company, 1st Airborne Battalion from Cam Erawan in Lop Buri, which was in
combat during a campaign fighting communist terrorists in the Phu Phan
mountains in northeast Thailand’s Sakhon Kakhon Province in 1967.
His age and physical handicap are of no concerns due to
his daily exercise routine which keeps him physically fit and strengthens
his mind and spirit. He said that it is very important to be confident in
one’s own abilities. He added that perseverance is a trait which must be
worked at while maintaining a degree of caution.

Big “Mo” strikes again
PSC Three Sisters Golf
Not being satisfied with winning the “B” flight in
the Pattaya Sports Club monthly tournament with 41 points, Bob Moberg came
back with a vengeance on Monday to win the bragging rights. Bob won the
first 14 skins before letting his golfing partners get one each to end the
day - hole 18 was tied. Bob came in with a smashing 44 points to demolish
the field.
Bob
“Mo” Moberg bragged all the way to the bank with 14 Skins and 44
points at the 3 Sisters SCC competition Monday 21 Jan. Keith Phillips
brought up the anchor with 22 points.
Jerry Lien, who had finished earlier, thought that he
might have won the bragging rights with 40 points, but found out that he
actually came in third (he had a few choice words for Bob upon hearing
that Bob had 44 points). Coming in second was Fast Eddie with 41 points.
This was the best that Eddie has shot in a long time.
Coming in with another good score for the day was
Jacques Thibaut with 39 points. Good shooting guys! Expect all of your
handicaps to be adjusted by next week.
This week there was a mix-up on the bag holder. It was
thought that Ian Edwards had won the position as bag holder for the week,
but late comer Keith Phillips managed to stumble pass Ian and grabbed the
bag on his way down to 22 points. Congratulations Ian - sorry but we had
to change the pictures for the paper. Anyway, fun was had by all as Papa
Ray supplied the snacks for the golfers at the Caddy Shack Two.
“Back Door” shoots an Albatross at Burapha
IPGC TAGGS Golf from The Haven
During a week when more than a hundred golfers played
in the three competitions from The Haven, no less than twenty-nine members
made a trip to the winners’ podium to collect their spoils of the day.
It was also a week that saw seven new members and fourteen returnees
welcomed by Richard Livingston the resident PGA professional. New members
included Kenneth Moss, Patrick Browne, Lee Duncan, Christopher Davisson,
Frank Trinkle and Einar Widness, whilst the returnees comprised of Lars
Schackt, Stan Goodwin, Per Aschan, Len and Jean Utting, Brian Prime, Matt
Millar, Dan Maclean, Tore Eliasson, Dave Drew, Brian Cole, Doug and Wendy
Hollingsworth. Many of these featured in the prizes during the week’s
competitions.
Due to space restrictions your correspondent can only
pick out a few highlights of the week as follows.
Serge Straeten’s fantastic 6 up at the notoriously
difficult Navy Course stands out as the best result and is a further
validation of “the Pin Eye coaching system”. Russell has been so
overwhelmed with requests for lessons, he now requires students to bring
their own 3 woods to be driven up the practice range.
“Back Door” Bob, playing the stroke index two 471
yard par five 10th at Burapha, hit a wedge to six feet for his second and
sunk the putt for a net Albatross and five Stableford points. If that’s
not slipping through the back door, I don’t know what is.

Hard work at Eastern Star
IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at the Bunker
Ten years ago there was an insignificant coconut
plantation near the beach at Phala, Ban Chang, but that was before Robert
Trent Jones Jr. set about transforming it into one of the most attractive
and challenging golf courses on the Eastern Seaboard. The remnants of the
plantation can be seen on every fairway at Eastern Star, flanked by
man-made lakes, and this was the challenge facing the Bunker Boys on
Tuesday, 22nd January, when they set about chasing the Bunker’s weekly
medal competition.
The large field was cut at 19 and under, and in
division one Michael Dige took the honours with a very neat 74, just
nosing out Bill Hewitt and Norman Brooks on 75.
In division two the only sub-par round of the day was
recorded by Kevin Wilson, soon to return to the UK, and he was well ahead
of the chasing group of George Meigh, Clive Harris and Fireman Danny
Greer, all on net 76.
Clive Harris and Colin Wilkes both recorded two’s on
their cards, thus sharing the Bunker Super Sawng award and seven
handicapper, Stan Goodwin, was an early favourite for the Bunker Banana
Booby with his gross 92! This feat was soon eclipsed, however, when Per
Aschan picked up after four futile putts at the first, not realising he
was playing medal. Silly Billy!
At the end of the day the true winner was Robert Trent
Jones and the beauty of the former coconut plantation. Follow the Bunker
regularly at http://www.thebunkerboys.com
Local courses getting crowded
PSC Golf from the Cafe Kronborg
Monday 21st January - Bangpra (Stableford)
The oldest course on the Eastern Seaboard was host to a
Stableford competition in two flights, A flight 0-19, B flight 20 and up.
Steady Ebrahim took the A flight with 39 points, Chuck
Carriere was second with 37 points, Brian Blackford third on 34 points
& John Reynisson fourth, also with 34 points but losing third on count
back.
The B flight was won by Joe Sebastion with 40 points,
second came Werner Strub on 37 points, third came Pete Galle on 30 points
beating Harold Gruber also 30 points into fourth place.
Near pins: 2nd Werner Strub, 8th Don Richardson, 12th
Kevin Ward and 17th Rund Heldzinger.
Long putts: 9th Dan Heidebo and 18th Dave Evans.
Thursday 24th January: Siam C.C. (Medal)
It was something of a surprise that on checking the
numbers signed up for the competition on Monday night, after the Bangpra
trip, the total had already exceeded 60, and as PSC books 10 tee times
(10x4 balls) meant PSC had to close the list until they contacted Siam and
arranged more tee times.
A phone call to Siam produced a, “sorry full”; even
with the best will, no way could they squeeze in more persons. The only
leeway was afternoon groups or 5 balls.
What to do? Without having to turn away persons on the
morning of the competition. It was here that the ‘Old Stagers’ came
good and a visit to Paul Kraft, and the Three Sisters, requesting them to
play p.m. resulted in Herbie & the boys coming to the rescue. Many
thanks to them.
On the first tee at Siam, it was a pleasure to lead off
40+ golfers on a fine day on a packed course and appreciation goes to Ged
Mason who chased the players to the tee and got them away.
The A flight (0-17) was won by Reg Warner with a net 69
well ahead of 2nd place Dave Evans with net 75, third was Johann Reynisson
with a net 76 and fourth Jerry Kurtz on net 77.
The B flight winner for the second competition in a row
was Joe Sebastion with a net 71, second with a net 73 was Helmut Schmit,
and then it became count back time with 3 players on net 74. The result
put Ebrahim in 3rd place, Patric Muggli in fourth and Arthur Bailey the
unlucky one.
Near pins: 4th Jerry Kurtz, 8th Ruud Helsingden, 12th
Chris Davisson, and 16th Will Mooney
Long putts: 18th Ebrahim and 9th Jerry Kurtz
The courses at present are heavily booked so it is
advisable to put your name down early. The probability is the organizers
will limit to 40 players, unless the course will give more tee times.
However, there will still be the social golf at the normal 9.30 time.
Compelling winners at 15th PSC Member’s Tournament
Each of the flight winners at the 15th Member’s
Tournament held at Pattaya Country Club comes with a compelling story.
Alan Alexander edged Gerhard Schulze on a count back, each having 42
points, to win the C Flight. What is interesting is that Alan started the
game just three months ago by taking lessons from our local professionals.
His closest friends, many of them long time PSC members, have seen him
progress from learning how to grip the club to winning tournaments in this
amazingly short time. He credits a rich sporting background, having
competed at the highest levels of international squash and table tennis,
to contributing to his success. His handicap has come down 14 strokes in
two weeks!
If Alan represents all that is youth and innocence in
the tournament, the B Flight winner is evidence that cunning and guile
still can will out. The old warhorse Bob Moberg, with 41 points, edged one
of the always tough lady competitors, Im Woodruffe, on count back to notch
the B Flight victory. Bob, who graciously takes all the photographs for
the Member’s Tournament found himself on the other side of the camera
for a change.
The group that came a close second in the recently
played Charity Classic was the Banchang Bandits. Well, this time they sent
their team captain on a solo raid of the 15th Member’s Tournament. He
showed that he could do it on his own as he headed back south with first
place A Flight trophy securely tucked under his arm. The possibility of
roadblocks is being discussed to keep those lads down south.
The following tournament sponsors provided donations
which greatly enhanced this popular monthly outing: Pattaya Sports Club,
Cafe Kronborg (Soi Diana), Papa Ray, Blue Parrot Bar and Restaurant (Soi
Pattayaland Two), Tequila Reef Cantina (Soi 7), The Golf Shop (Soi Skaw
Beach), PolTony’s Gourmet Restaurant & Fairplay MiniGolf (South
Pattaya on Jomtien Hill), and the Diana Group’s Green Bottle Pub (2nd
Road & Soi Diana). A warm “Thank You” from all of the 120
participants to these sponsors for making this tournament so enjoyable.
PSC
Member’s Open winners Bob Moberg (B Flight), Art Hancock (A Flight) and
Alan Alexander (C Flight).
The next Monthly Members’ Tournament is scheduled for
February 22nd at Great Lake Golf & Country Club. Tournament flyers
will be posted at the PSC Clubhouse on Third Road, Cafe Kronborg, Three
Sisters Bar, Diana Inn, Blue Parrot, Shenanigans, Tequila Reef, Sugar
Shack, and Scandic Hotel.

Cinderella vs. “The Greatest Show on Turf”
by Howie Reed
Cinderella, in the guise of the New England Patriots,
showed up at Pittsburgh’s Heinz Field to try on the glass slipper. A fit
and she’d would be invited to the “Big Dance” in N’Awlins next
Monday morning Pattaya time. It took 57 minute’s before the Pats could
relish the moment when they stopped a last ditch effort by the Steelers to
seal their 24-17 win and punch the ticket to Super Bowl XXXVI. It was a
perfect fit.
Like all Cinderellas a little help along the way is
always appreciated. The Pats special teams were there to make the ugly
sister pretty. They made her a raving beauty. They combined for 14 points
with a 55 yard punt return, after a stupid penalty, and a blocked field
goal for 7. Cinderella was able to overcome adversity. Starting QB Tom
Brady went down with 1:26 left in the half. No problem. Drew Bledsoe came
in immediately leading the Pats to a TD.
It will be New England’s third Super Bowl, all in
N’Awlins, where they will continue to look for the elusive “W”. The
two previous trips they were soundly beaten 35-21 (Green Bay) and 46-10 by
the Bears. To add insult to injury, the latter was punctuated by William
“The Refrigerator” Perry scoring a running TD.
The Philadelphia Eagles came soaring into St. Louis
only to be treated to a royal “faulking” by the wondrous one,
Marvelous Marshall Faulk. With Ram QB Kurt Warner hurting with jammed ribs
that were a lot worse than advertised, it was left to Faulk to carry the
Ram’s on his piston like sturdy legs. He got the job done in spades
carrying the ball 31 times for 159 yards with a pair of TDs tossed in.
Also, the Rams’ best “D” in the NFC swarms to the ball like a punter
to “free bar fine night.”
The Rams and the Pats will be getting it on for the
second time this season. The first, in Foxboro, was a 24-17 win for the
Rams. In that game Kurt Warner passed for 401 yards but fumbled twice
which set up New England scores. It’s apparent that the Ram offense can
play about any style dictated by the defense. They can attack through the
air with a covey fleet of receivers playing pitch and catch with Warner or
run Mr. Faulk to eat up the clock. For New England there is a different
scenario in play. The offense has been almost non existent of late. They
have only two offensive touchdowns in the last two games and counting
their earlier loss to the Rams only three. The defense and the kicking
game have been carrying the load.
For the Gaming Industry in Las Vegas, the Super Bowl is
the second biggest weekend of the year. In the Championship games both
underdogs won. There is an old axiom that says, “Forget the points. Take
the team you think will win.” Bad idea. The Rams are favored in Super
Bowl XXXVI by anywhere from 14 to 15 1/2 points with the estimate of
points scored at 52 1/2. For those that take an afternoon tea break, that
means that New England starts with at least a 14 point lead. Only two
Super Bowls had bigger favorites than the Rams this year. San Francisco
was favored by 19 in 1995 against San Diego, and the 49ers won 49-26. The
New York Jets beat the Baltimore Colts 16-7 as 18-point underdogs in 1969.
Forget “X’s” and “O’s”. There is such a
thing as destiny. Cinderella got her foot in the shoe. Some things can’t
be explained. Bourbon Street will be transformed into Harvard Square. Pat
O’Brien’s will look like the Bull & the Finch. Take the Pats and
practice saying, “I knew it all along.” Paul Revere’s ride will be
relegated to second place in New England lore.
Fortt wins Rising Sun Thursday outing
The Rising Sun played Green Valley on Thursday, which
organizers said was, “A great pleasure to play this course, which
ensured everyone enjoyed the day.”
Kevin Fortt won the outing with 31 points. Runner-up,
losing on count back, was Per Aschen, also with 31 points off his 9
handicap.
J. J. Harney from Ireland finished third.
Near pins went to Keith Greatrix, Rob McDonald, Chris
Tyszktiewicz and Brian Walker.
