International Lawn Bowling
competition comes to Pattaya
The Bowling Green, the only Lawn Bowls Club in Thailand outside of
Bangkok was host to an international competition last weekend. Players from
the Hidden Vale Sports Club in the Philippines which included national and
ASEAN Games players and the Royal Bangkok Sports Club with members of the
Thai National team battled it out on the turf with local teams in a Pattaya
Sports Club supported competition totaling 42 people in 14 teams.
42
people in 14 teams competed at the Bowling Green last weekend.
The two-day event featured both team and individual
matches each playing 3 rounds. The weather stayed fine enough for stalwart
bowlers to out roll each other on the turf in a friendly atmosphere.
“This is a great promotion start-up for the new Pattaya
Sports Club Lawn Bowls Section and gives the PSC and Pattaya more sports
recognition, both nationally and internationally. The inclusion of the
players from the Royal Bangkok Sports Club is nonpareil. It is a great honor
to have these two teams,” said Glenn ‘Jeep’ Holthaus, chairman of the
new Lawn Bowls Section for PSC.
Glenn
‘Jeep’ Holthaus, chairman of the new Lawn Bowls Section of the Pattaya
Sports Club.
The winner of the individual class was Mr. Per and in the
team class was Khun Jit and Mr. Per once again.
Overall team results: 1st Place: Royal Bangkok Sports
Club; 2nd: The Bowling Green Pattaya; 3rd Place: Hidden-Vale Sports Club
Philippines Team.
Everyone joined the buffet dinner after completing the
prize presentation.
Distance
control, accuracy and tactics are important elements in a lawn bowling
competition.
However, the overall winner was Pattaya, hosting yet
another international event and promoting this relatively new sport in
Thailand to the rest of the world.
The Bowling Green has been open for just over two years
and hosted numerous local and regional events.
International teams clash
in table tennis competitions
Songklod Kaewvisit
The Assumption College in Sriracha (ACS) hosted the
German Table Tennis (TTF) Oranien Frohnhausen team in an international
friendly table tennis match on the school campus. Friendly clash of bats on
the table incited a great deal of exchange in sweat and fun for the players.
The
German team (front) from Oranien Frohnhausen return a volatile shot.
Twelve tables were packed full of action with much of the
games being evenly matched. The final results showed both teams coming up
trumps but it was the home team, with moral support from fellow school
members and faculty, winning the friendly competition.
Friendly matches, being the main aim, provided creative
competition and practice for the Assumption players. The college already
boasts some of the top players in Thailand. The visitors, TTF, played the
German national league in divisions 10 and 11.
The event, in close cooperation with Assumption College
and TIBHAR Table tennis supplies, was facilitated by dedicated coach Thomas
Kunzelmann.
An exchange program whereby players from Thailand are
able to visit Germany has been set up for next year. The scholarship program
allows Thai students to better their skills abroad with the only expense
being a plane ticket.
Assumption College Headmaster Paradajin Tengtrakul opened
the match proceedings.
PSC fishing at Bobby Joe’s 60’s Bar
Wednesday August 6
Went up to The 3 Sisters the other day to have a few
beers with Herbie, and as things do the talk turned to fishing. Herbie told
me he had an old Penn Senator that belonged to his father, bit green now but
if I cleaned it up I could have it. Just to let him know when someone caught
a fish on it. Cleaned up it was as sweet as a nut.
“Easy”
says Bob at 12:00 hrs.
Wednesday, off we went with a full load of 4 fishermen,
including Bob Jess, of golfing fame who said he had never caught a big fish.
It had to happen did it not! About 1,155 the reel of Herbie’s Father
screamed out and Bob Jess was at the helm. At twelve twenty as we followed
the fight with the gaff Captain Lott laughed and said 2 o’clock. Never in
a month of Sundays was the general comment.
Bob
says “Didn’t I do well?”
At 14:10 as the fight came to a conclusion and the Ray
was pulled in finally, after going around the boat time after time, the
Captain was proved right and Bob Jess was the prime owner of about 35 kg of
fish and chips and Tom Yam Kung, and Herbie’s fathers reel had proved its
worth.
Paul
says “this fish is as big as me”, well the 7 foot tail is.
To photo the Ray we had hang it up as it was so heavy.

Night time launch for new custom built fishing boat
The Pattaya Sports Club now has at their disposal a new
custom-built deep-sea charter fishing boat. Built at Naklua over a 7-month
period she had a night time launch on August 1 due to the time of the high
tides which is critical because of the mud flats in that area.
The
J Sea Hunter, a 63-foot custom built deep sea fishing boat, is now available
for deep sea sports fishing or pleasure trips.
The J Sea Hunter is a 63-foot custom built deep sea

Always a fine day out at this, the oldest golf course in
the area and it is certainly one of the most respected, especially when the
greens are at their fastest. On this day it was apparent that the greens are
coming back to their fastest and proved quite tricky for most of the
players, and indeed the course is at
Jeff
Wylie
present quite dry, so getting the ball off the
fairway proved to be most difficult. Mick O’Connor found it difficult, his
lob wedge ended up in the pond on the 11th hole to the utter amazement of
his caddy. Not to his fellow players we had seen him hit it and it was
probably as good a place as any for it.
Back in the clubhouse as I tucked into my Rainbow
Ice-cream, it soon became apparent that the scores would not be very good
and the winner, Derek Brook won with a good score of 39 points ahead of
Pete
Galle
the ever (or very) trying Barry Kerr with 37
points. A countback for third on 36 points saw Tim Holt win and go into
third ahead of Pete Galle in fourth. Dave Richardson completed the winners
when he came in 5th with 35 points.
Always a pleasure to play, this is always worth a visit.

A good turn-out on a day when the fairways and greens had
firmed since our previous visit which improved the scoring considerably.
Once again the 4th par 6 saw a lot of “wipes” with only the low
handicappers managing par or bogey by taking the short-cut off the tee with
high fades or draws around the trees. Michael Brennan played the course
extremely well off his 24 handicap to edge out the in-form Yasuo and Serge
and will no doubt see his handicap tumbling fast. The 2’s was won outright
by Trevor Schirmer.
Prior to the prize giving Richard Livingston, the
resident PGA professional, welcomed back Alan Hanlon, John Clements and

A little breeze plus hard, fast greens caused havoc with all but Peter
Emslie, who, with his long experience of Scottish links courses was quite at
home in the conditions and won the day by a clear 5 shots, being the only
player to break his handicap. Terry Phur just managed to edge out BJ and
Christoff to round out the podium positions.
The 2’s were shared by Al Rolnick, Dave Stockman and

On a breezy day, scores were generally extremely good, but Trevor Schirmer
destroyed the field with a superb 83 off the stick to finish 8 up and thus
ensure a cut in his 19 handicap. Before returning from Australia, Trevor
bought a super pair of new tan leather golf shoes for A$ 20 only to discover
on putting them on here that they were not a pair but two left foot shoes of
different sizes - one legged golfers with large left feet please take note!
Yasuo still in great form following his 2nd place at St
Andrews on Monday and win at Laem Chabang with Lewinskiis on Tuesday was
once again unlucky to finish the bridesmaid at the Haven with a cracking 4
up. BJ and Phil put in excellent scores of 3 up, whilst Trevor Edge
squandered a 5 up position by losing 3 of the last 5 holes. No doubt the
breeze made the par 3’s difficult as nobody managed a 2.
Prior to the prize giving Richard Livingston welcomed
back Dale Drader and Derek Reaper.
PJ Plays a “Blinder”
IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at the Bunker
Another large group of Bunker Boys took to the road
on Tuesday, August 5, to take on the testing Gary Player designed course at
Sri Racha. The course is beautifully set out and, with the injection of some
cash, could be one of the showpieces of Eastern Seaboard golf. Sadly the
course is a little jaded at present with hard fairways and inconsistent
uncut greens, but the potential is certainly there and on weekdays the cost
of golf there is ridiculously low!
Surprisingly, given the difficulties of the greens, all
except four players scored within six shots of par, with half of the field
firing par or better. In division two there was a three way share of the
honours with Mark Joshua, Norm Robinson and Kevin Wilson all recording
scores of net 70. In division one Magnus Johansson shot a marvellous gross
75, recording a net 69, only to see his efforts thwarted by those of form
man, Ciano Glavina, on 68, and the spectacular form of the thoughtful
Irishman PJ Redmond, who played a “blinder” in returning a card of net
66.
The only birdie two of the day was recorded by Richard
Feltham who duly took the Bunker Super Sawng award, but the rest of his game
only brought him the Bunker Banana Booby as he dragged his heels in with a
high scoring net 83! It ended up as a wonderful day’s golf and for economy
and comfort Sri Racha is certainly worth pencilling in on your schedule.
Happy Birthday
Mr. Loy
On Thursday August 7, Mr. Loy gave himself the ideal
birthday present by taking the Bunker Boys to the challenging course at
Treasure Hill for their weekly stableford event. The course was in as
excellent a condition as anyone could remember and the day was fine. The
standard of the golf was on a par with other visits to the course and only
one player managed to shoot par or better.
Amazingly, the course always seems to have the last word.
Norm Robinson and Steve Nowell, playing in the first group, set the standard
with their 32 point returns but the ever so consistent Swede, Hๅkan
Widestedt, again showed he is the man to beat with his 37 point haul. He
also proceeded to spoil Mr. Loy’s party by firing nearest to the pin on
the long par three second hole, which was kindly sponsored by Dale Shier.
There were no birdie two’s this time but the Bunker
Banana Booby was certainly in evidence and many breathed embarrassed sighs
of relief as jovial Unto Kilvonen accepted them for his low score of 20
points. The party continued at the Bunker with Mr. Loy entertaining the
players with a buffet but the talk was about one subject - “How can we
avoid Treasure Hill next time”!

Stop Press, Bobby, the real Bobby is back amongst us, and
it was most noticeable for the golfers in the organisation of the day. After
a severe bout of Asian Vodka Flue, that necessitated a few days in the
hospital, on a drip, and a nice girl she was, he is now all bushy tailed and
bright eyed. Beware Bobby is on the comeback. We knew that, when on
returning from golf Bobby had laid on a super meal of Scotch Broth, and
there was no Scotch in it.

Back to the golf and a day out at Treasure Hill turned
into a ‘Magical Mystery Tour’ for those on the bus, and all this for no
extra charge, big hearted our Bobby. Still all ends etc and soon it was tee
off time in a stiff breeze and a tough day was had by all. One who came
through with a smile was a lob wedgeless Mick O’Connor who is soon to
return to UK (those of a delicate nature do not read the next few words) to
go to work. Sad what, but he threatens to be back soon. Mick shot the best
round of the day.

Back at the ranch tucking into a Bobby special we noticed
organiser Bob Bender had nipped off to hospital, its really tough playing

the sexy ladies on Bobby’s staff to do it and as they say ‘The customer

Trevor and Saen Combine well at Plutaluang
Mike Franklin
Trevor Carnahoff and Saen Jaroenwong demonstrated their
partnership well at Plutaluang South and East courses in the August 5
Shenanigans Combined Stableford competition, returning a combined Stableford
score of 74 points.
Mike
Franklin flanked by the winners Trevor and Saen at Shenanigans Pub.
Saen, a relative newcomer to golf and a fairly infrequent
player with obvious potential, contributed 35 points to add to Trevor’s
steady 39 points.
Just a couple of shots behind was the formidable pairing
of Terry Phur and Lamud Chaidara, Terry producing the best score of the day
and contributing 42 points to their total of 72 Stableford points.
The small field of 16 players only warranted a
‘winners’ prize so Terry and Lamud were consoled with a commendation at
the prize giving back at Shenanigans. However, not to be outdone they were
each able to claim both the near pins available – Terry on South #4 and
Lamud on East #5. There were two long putts that went to John Kennedy on
South #9 and to Mam Trayling rather short putt on East #9.
It was a dry warm windy day, on a course in fine shape
and with more improvements evident with new cart paths laid, roped areas and
clear markings.
Just about the whole field was back at Shenanigans for
the traditional ‘long table’ social evening.
Pattaya Country Club is the next venue on Tuesday August
19 for a “Mystery Pairs’ Stableford competition. Sign-up in pairs please
at Shenanigans and, for a full update on all the golf visit the webpage at

PSC Three Sisters Golf
Monday August 4, brought out a slew of golfers vying for
the bragging rights for the day. As it ended up, it was one of the tightest
finishes for the year. Six golfers were within 2 shots of each other. With
the course in good shape and perfect golfing weather a bunch of good scores
were recorded.
Jim
Tully (left) and John Sinclair (right).
Winning the day with 41 points was John Sinclair. This I
believe was John’s first win with the Three Sisters group. He drove well
and made some crucial putts to take the bragging rights for the day.
Following close behind John was Ian Edwards, Kenny Mau
and Tim Holt. All came in with 40 points and excuses why they did not win.
There were trees in the way, the sand was too soft, the green was not quite
right but as it was, it was a great day. Just a shot back was Don Ratcliffe
and Kevin Mitch. It was a day for good scores and fun golf.
Holding up the bottom again this week was one of the
geriatrics. Although Tully hits the ball a long way when he hits it, it
doesn’t always go in the right direction. Tully had his troubles with
trees and traps to falter into the cellar with 22 points. Just missing out
falling into the cellar were three other golfers. Paul Donohue, Rollie Weese
and Marcel Wittner barely squeaked by with 23 points. I’m sure Tully will
be trying his best next week to climb back out of the bottom position.

How about this? Virada Nirapathpongporn, a 21 year old
senior at Duke University, became the 2003 US Women’s Amateur Golf
Champion on Monday when she beat 16 year old Jane Park 2 up. The Bangkok
native lead throughout the 36 hole final dropping to one up on the 32nd
hole but then picking it back up on the 34th. Nirapathpongporn becomes
the first resident of Thailand to win the Championship. I’ll drink to
that.
Tomorrow morning (Pattaya Time) WBC Jr. Lightweight
Champion Sirimongkol Singmanasak (40-1) will defend his title against
Jesus Chavez (39-2) in the challengers hometown of Austin Texas. That is
not a good deal for the visitor from Thailand. The Champ fighting in
Texas is in really foreign territory. The bright side of the match-up is
that Singmanasak is 17-0 with 16 KO’s since the turn of the century.
The Champ has a devastating punch which is the best way to counteract a
hometown decision. Taking a 45 magnum in the ring is not an option. I can
see the headline now in next week’s Mail, “Champ KO’s the hometown
kid to eke out a split decision”. One mistake fighters make when they
go to America to fight is arriving at the last minute never allowing
themselves to acclimated to the environment.
Singhwangcha can’t use that as an excuse as he’s
arrived in Texas a full 8 days prior to the fight. This pre planning may
be negated by traveling with entourage large enough to film the dance
scene from Anna & The King”. The Champ told everyone, “that he
had used the most powerful training techniques with his trainer.”
That’s all well and good. What’s important is that the Champ is doing
the things that will give him a chance to win. That’s about all one can
ask. The pick? I’ll go with Singhwangcha in an upset. If so he’ll
next get a shot at 130 Pound Champ Acelino Freitas which is really
getting in the deep water without a life vest.
Sunday Acelino Freitas (34-0) survived two knockdowns
to knock out Jorge Barrios (38-2-1) in the 12th and final round of what
was a “hummdinger of a fight”. It was that night when the moon was
blue, pigs were flying and there were no bar fines. Freitas carved up
Barrios left eye like a chopper working for Coronal Sanders. Most
fighters would have quit but there was none in the gentleman from
Argentina. Freitas might have been in trouble had the fight gone the
distance. At the time of the KO, 50 seconds in the 12th, the fight was a
flat footed tie. Whoa Nelly what a fight.
Veeraphol Sahaprom (40-1-1), the WBC Bantam Champ, is
considered by most boxing experts as the second best Bantam in the world.
The number one spot is reserved for Rafael Marquez (29-3-0) the IBF
Champ. That aside it seems rather strange that those behind Sahaprom (aka
Veeraphol Nahkornluang-Promotion) have elected to fight Tosjiaki Nishioka
(23-3-2) for a third time on October 4th in the Land of the Rising Son as
the daughter is allowed to sleep.
Of a more immediate concern is the fight that will be
telecast on Channel 7 from 16-18.30 this day from “The Mall”. I
probably wouldn’t mention this but got another one of those “Dear
lovely press, How are you?” Can’t resist that opening or “Sexy
man” from a pole grabber. This afternoon got “hot matches”.
That’s what the man did write. Yodsanan 3K Battery (WBA champion in
Super Featherweight division) vs Larry Pelonia (Philippines Champion) at
135Lbs for 10 rounds, Yoddamrong Singwangcha, PABA champion in
Featherweight division and 2nd WBA in Featherweight division vs Rud 4K
Kevkatche (Philippines Champion) at 126 Lbs. for 10 rounds and then
Pichit Chor Siriwat, The 3rd WBA in Light Flyweight division vs Marvin
Gumban (Philippines Champion) at 114 Lbs. for 6 rounds. How about them
apples?
The PABA fly title doesn’t mean much unless you own
it. Filipino Rolly Lunas (15-2) not only has the belt but will keep it
after gaining a 12 round UD over Thailander Deeden Kengkarun (21-10) last
Friday night in Manila. The Thai munched on canvas, al dente I’m sure,
the 3rd. He survived to go the distance. That’s three of 4 on the
losing end for Kengkarun. Now that we’ve taken care of the local stuff,
“How about the heavyweights?” The division got really interesting if
everything plays out. Lennox Lewis will not fight this year and maybe
never again. As we whip the tears from our face the division goes on. The
WBO (WE BE Organizing) mandated that Corrie Sanders (39-2) - Lemon
Brewster go out to bid. It did. Saunders says, “Nope”. Instead he’s
signed to fight Roy Jones Jr. (48-1) in November. Jones Jr? Hasn’t
signed yet but promoter Murad Muhammad said, “it’s a done deal,
it’s been signed.” Murad of course is someone that never lets facts
get in the way of running his soup hole. The WBO will then strip Sanders
of the title with Brewster fighting Tua (42-3) for the belt. Meanwhile
the WBC (WE BE Cheating), if Lewis doesn’t fight, will sanction an
“interim title fight” between Hashim Rahman (35-4) and Vitali
Klitschko (32-2). IBF (I Been Fixin) champ Chris Byrd (36-2) is fighting
Fres Oquendo (24-1) except that there is no site or interest. Mike Tyson?
He’s in bankruptcy court and awaiting his 100 million dollar case
against Don King. How about them apples?

Here we are again. It’s always nice to be the scribe, I
can’t believe what I’m writing here but anyway one of us has to do the
job every week, so here I am.
The hares for today are the two birthday childs CF and
Rottweiler. After we all signed up our lovely Scotts or is it scotch GM GKW
formed a circle and like usual we blessed the new shoes but? No new shoes?!
What is Pattaya’s shoe industry without Hammer?
Anyway the Hares explain the run, bla, bla, bla, bla and
there we go and it was hot. Up the dirt road and into the bushes. Where was
Arse-holeo? He carries on straight without noticing the trail to the left on
the road? Yeah, our Aussies are full of optimism! Further along the roads
and into the quarry? Paper? Don’t know! After a 5 minutes search we found
it and off again. Hello, here he is again our Aussie bloke Arse-holeo and
shouting something about “Did yau seee ccchheekss?”
Running, checking, drinking and back to the A-Site! I
think it was a good run about 45 min and excellent to get rid of the weekend
toxins. We then formed another circle and the raffle with our lovely Ewok
gets on. What’s that two farang ladies are winners brought in from Africa
by Karamba and they are not black?!
Buddy, the reason we are here is to stay away from the
white ones and he flies them in. Well done!? And what’s that the last
price went was the free run ticket? Hello wake up folks the run ticket is
worth 300 Baht and a 200 Baht T-Shirt. Do we need a calculator to figure out
that we can make easy 100 Baht profit by taking the ticket and buy a t-shirt
later, well we are in Pattaya and the brain is...eeehhh I don’t know.
Usual stuff follows Anniversaries, visitors (not enough),
leavers (not enough), etc.! RA arrived and iced the Hares good run. King Yao
