Exploding gas bottle destroys house

Englishman suffers multiple injuries

There wasn’t much left of Englishman David Powney’s bungalow after a gas explosion inside collapsed walls and sent debris flying in all directions. Police found Powney, 54, in what was left of his bedroom, still alive.

A loud gas explosion at a bungalow on Soi Thidawan in Central Pattaya rattled windows and shook the ground at around 6.30 a.m. on January 29. The bungalow was completely demolished. Fifty four year-old David Powney from England was found in what was left of his bedroom, still alive but in great pain.

Local bar owners prepare to fight new government legislation

New operating hours and license fees labeled draconian

New regulations handed down by the central government have thrown our local entertainment industry into confusion and dread. A nationwide law that would drastically increase the price of their legal operating license and oblige most nightlife businesses to close at midnight will strike at the heart of the industry by choking off profits, throwing people out of work and weaken the country’s flourishing tourist industry.

Carrefour Management Training Center opens

Carrefour, one of Thailand’s leading retailers, recently opened its ‘Management Training Center’ (CMC) at its hypermarket in Lad Prao. Comprised of an office center, canteen area and 8 training rooms spread over 1200 sq. meters the CMC will provide the company with a central location for internal meetings, seminars and employee training. This year, Carrefour expects to train 1,500 employees over 64 sessions.

Chaine des Rotisseurs looks at new horizons

The world’s largest gourmet group, the Chaine des Rotisseurs, met at Horizons Restaurant (23rd floor Pattaya Hill Resort) to view Pattaya from on high and discuss the ‘menu’ for the year’s culinary events.

Local Bailli (president) Louis Noll of Mata Hari Restaurant outlined the suggestions that he and his board members had put together. These dinners range from a casual Italian evening, through to a president’s dinner, with tuxedo and chain, to be held in the Presidential Suite of the Royal Cliff Royal Wing and Spa, with the meal cooked on site, or en suite. Other dinners are being scheduled for well known five star establishments such as Bruno’s (in March) and Casa Pascal (October).

Schlumberger Laser Nationals this weekend

The year’s first big yacht-racing event, the Schlumberger Laser Nationals, is “ready and rarin’ to go” off the shores of the Royal Varuna Yacht Club, South Pattaya.

Charlie Zbinden, the Thailand Laser fleet captain - and, incidentally top of the 2003 “Leader Board” - is the dynamic force behind this most active fleet and, through the good sponsorship of Schlumberger, the well-known company which services oil rigs, Charlie expects as many as 60 craft on the water this Saturday and Sunday.
