Pattaya takes two against the US Navy
in local softball friendly
Brendan Richards
Pattaya’s Dollhouse/PSC softball team recently had the
opportunity to play against some special visitors, crew of the USS
Blueridge, in town on some R&R. As part of their onshore activities a
friendly softball match was arranged with the navy Hitmen and the marines
aboard the vessel.
Dirk
takes his stance at home plate, ready to send the next pitch out of the
ballpark.
First up was Pattaya’s veteran versus the Hitmen on a
sunny afternoon at the Pattaya Flying Club, a vast difference after the navy
players revealed that their last game was in the snow.
As the Hitmen took first bat, still a little rusty,
Pattaya gave them a run for their money after letting them take just two
runs in the first innings. But this did not deter the visitors.
This
‘Hitman’ from the Navy team blasted quite a few home runs.
The balls flew back and forth and the visitors were well
warmed up making six runs in the fifth innings only to be defeated by some
well placed hits by the oldies taking the final score to 17 to 15 at the
bottom of the seventh.
Still plenty of steam left, the Hitmen faced their
counterparts, the Marines taking down USMC contingent 11 to 8.
The
Hitmen.
Dirk Brijs team captain who played a major role in
organizing the event said, “Pattaya’s softball scene is not a new thing.
Softball in Pattaya is about 10 to 11 years old. We come out here and play
every Sunday afternoon all year round.” Dirk also mentioned that this is
the first year that the Pattaya team is playing in the Bangkok International
Softball League. “We just wanted to raise the level of play and be ready
for some bigger competitions.”
The Bangkok connections paid off as through a member of
the Nike team the friendly softball games were set up with the Blueridge
following a volley of emails.
“We also won our first game (against the Navy), which
is pretty surprising,” added Dirk.

The Pattaya softball Team is also currently discussing
plans to develop a softball school in Pattaya to involve more children in
the game. Joe Vella from the navy Hitmen said that they always try and get a
game in every port they stop in. “Depending on the weather, we play
baseball, basketball or football. For us it’s a fun thing and we get to
know the local people and they get to know us. Today’s a great day and
they (Pattaya team) have been very hospitable,” said Joe. “It’s good
to take time out from the ship and enjoy some liberty,” Joe added.
The
USMC team.
After some cooling off time, the Pattaya team jumped back onto the field
to face the marines. A tough game with both sides ready for good game play
but in the end it was the home side advantage that led to the visitors’
demise in the final friendly of the day with Pattaya winning 12 to 8 against
the very fit USMC team. After all said and done, it was a friendly match
with a favorable outcome for all, especially with the addition of a few
amber colored refreshments.

3rd John Clements, 72
For the second time in two weeks Michael Dige, known to the
local community as Superman, shot a gross sixty-nine to lay claim to the title
of hottest golfer in Pattaya at the current time. No doubt he has already given
directions to his tailor to add the information to his wardrobe of golf and
leisure wear and his dinner jacket, which is a very smart combination of
skintight bright red and blue and features a large “S” on each of the silk
lapels. Mark Gorda, from whom Michael took the title of “Best Dressed Man in
Pattaya”, was a full five shots behind but played well enough to take the top
prize on any other day. Karl Holm slipped into third place to round out the
first division winners.
Trevor Edge, still smarting from his bruising from the
previous week, and desperate to get back on the gravy train with his usual group
of benefactors, put in a sterling effort to take the top honours in the second
division by two shots from “Steddy Freddy” Ewins, who is now becoming such a
regular visitor to the podium, he is opening a used clothing store in the Made
in Thailand Market on Second Road. John Clements is hoping his third place will
not further interest the powers that be.
The twos pool, including the carry over, was shared between
Bill Kirkpatrick, Karl Holm, Tony Barritt, Trevor Edge and Michael Dige who had
two.
Before presenting the prizes Richard Livingston, the resident
PGA professional, welcomed new member Fredrik Hjelm and welcomed back Klaus
Lukarsch and Trevor Schirmer.

Alan Hanlon having just returned from the UK where he has
been playing seven rounds of golf a week in an effort to prepare for his golfing
tour of Pattaya, found all the work to be worthwhile as he easily took the top
spot in the first division. But this finely tuned athlete will no doubt soon be
scrabbling around at the bottom of the list if his wild celebrations after the
presentations are anything to go by. Chuck Carrier playing his last game before
returning home for the rest of the year strolled into second place four shots
clear of Per Aschan and Tony Barritt.
Brian Kelly, after weeks of the doldrums, finally got back to
winning ways but still did not manage to equal par to take the second division
after a three way count back from Tatsumi Noguchi and Tom Breslin.
The twos were shared between Les Utting, Serge Straeten, Al
Rolnik and Gary Wilborn.
Prior to the prize giving Richard welcomed new members Doug
Mintenko, Douglas Armitage and Kaneo Watanabe and also welcomed back Yasuo
Suzuki, Tatsumi Noguchi, Gary Wilborn, Bob Giddings, Doug Maiko and Alan Hanlon.

1st Division
1st Doug Campbell, all square
2nd Per Aschan, 1 down
3rd Tony Barritt, 2 down
3rd Tatsumi Noguchi, 3 down cb9 a/s
4th Christoph Vielle, 3 down cb9 1 down
2nd Division
1st Bob Lindborg, 4 up
2nd Peter Emslie, all square
3rd Patrick Asklund, 2 down
The wind and difficult greens conspired to thwart almost all
the days competitors as they took on the A & B courses at Khao Kheow with
many golfers deciding against playing after hearing rumours that birds from the
Open Zoo had been seen perching in the trees lining the fairways. Those that did
play ensured that all their drives were straight down the middle and far enough
away to be unable to see any wildlife whatsoever.
Doug Campbell is at last playing from a handicap “that he
feels comfortable with” and now the pressure is off “can just play and enjoy
it” and he used this new found sense of well being to take the first division
by a stroke from Per Aschan. Tony Barritt, also well in the handicap comfort
zone, continues to make hay when his back is not the excuse and led the chasing
group of Tatsumi Noguchi and Christoph Vielle to the podium.
Bob Linborg played by far the best round of the day and
ensured that he would start the following week with a two shot lower handicap
just when he was hoping it would go up in readiness for the four day competition
at the Lewiinskis Open. Peter Emslie led Patrick Asklund for the last two places
on the podium and took second place by two shots.
Doug Campbell had the only two of the day and therefore swept
the pool.
Back at The Haven Richard welcomed new members Tetshiko Uruma
and Claude Schlager and welcomed back John Draper and Jay Nakagawa.
3 Sisters Golf
Monday Golf, as usual, the turnout was good and the
competition tough. This week two “Top Dougs” fought it out for the top
spot. Doug Douglas and Doug Powell both came in with 40 points pulling ahead
of the rest of the field. Doug Douglas played a steady game with 20 points
on the front and 20 on the back nine. Doug Powell on the other hand started
slow with 18 on the front and charged in with 22 points on the back nine to
take the honors for the day. Winner
of the week Doug Powell (right) and Jim Tully (left) in the cellar.
Following close behind were Tim Holt and Sus Ige. Both
came in with 39 points - one behind the leaders. The largest group of
golfers were at 35 points. Seven golfers were clustered at 35 but were no
threat to the leaders. Last week the cluster stood at 34 points. It seems
that the golf is improving by the week.
This week two individuals were tied at 22 points to bring up the rear.
For the first time in a while, Larry Ball tied for the cellar position. He
stood on the brink as Tully slid past on the back nine to end in the cellar
again. Larry posted 14 points on the back nine as Tully garnered only 10
points to grab a hold of the bag again.
Payne & Bradley take control at the “White House”
Three dozen Bunker Boys took the road to
the beautifully manicured course at Royal Lakeside on Thursday February 19
for their weekly stableford event.
They found the course in excellent condition with lush
fairways and consistent greens and a day made for good golf. The field was
cut at seventeen and under and the two divisions produced a feast of golf
with a third of the field shooting level par or better.
In division one a trio of players, Harry Riley, Jens
Gunnarsson and Keith Smithson, shot 37 points to share the minor placings
with Karl Holm faring one point better to take the runner-up position. All
were outgunned by Steve Nowell however, and his score of forty points bore
testimony to both his skill and the quality of the golf course.
The big action was in division two where George
Redgewell optimistically returned a card bearing 42 points which was to be
good enough only for third place! Battling it out at the top were Jim Payne
and Gavin Bradley and the long hitting of the two regulars led to
unbelievable scores of 44 points.
The Bunker Super Sawng award was shared by Bill Hewitt,
Gavin Bradley, John Stolarczyk and Dougie Landsborough for their birdie
two’s on the back nine. Now, Des Pearson is a guy who loves the game of
golf and always plays it with a smile. He also enjoys the odd Heineken
around the course, in fact he racked up more beers than points! Maybe it
was this indiscretion which led to him piloting his buggy into a flowerbed
and for this alone he deserved the Bunker Banana Booby. He was later
reminded of the “Free Drop” local rule for flowerbeds. Once again the
Royal Lakeside course had done the Bunker proud, and for their part, the
lads had honoured it with a feast of good golf.

Tip 3 - Light Grip Pressure
Nearly all amateur golfers grip the club too tightly for
most or all of their shots. By using the drill that Tomi’s using in the
picture, you will achieve a much more relaxed grip on the club. Simply copy
what Tomi is doing, i.e. arms out straight in front of you with the club at
45 degrees and hold the club as lightly as you can whilst still keeping
control of it. Practice hitting the ball whilst keeping this grip pressure
all the way through the swing. Not only does this lighter grip pressure
enable your hands and wrists to work more effectively, but it will also help
you to a smoother transition from your backswing to forwardswing.
Remember, your club is not your ex-missus back in Europe, it’s your
lovely new Tilac here in Thailand, so don’t try and strangle the life out
of it please!

Kheo Kheow
Stableford
What a wonderful, and frustrating, land this is for we who
live here and for the myriad of visitors who come here to spend their leisure
time. Great golf courses, magnificent weather most of the time, and a people who
for the most part are smiling, happy and pleasant.
Bob
Noble with his ‘minders’ Eric and Dave.
I have however to tell ‘The story of the keys’ though,
you reason out why? On playing Khao Kheow last Thursday, the 12th, I returned to
Pattaya, travelling back in a friends car, and felt in my pocket for my door and
car keys. Oh no, I must have left them in my locker at Kheo Kheow, never mind my
wife has a spare set so no problem. Next morning I phoned them and asked them to
check my locker to see if my keys were in it. Just to make sure they understood
I asked the staff at the PSC to also check in Thai. No, the reply came back, no
keys. Not to worry, I can get a new set cut, but I was certain I had left them
there.
Max
presents to the Technical winners whilst Kevin keeps the shine down.
All the players full, we departed The 60’s Bar for Khao
Kheow in a flurry of excitement and arrived there and booked in to be told we
would play the A & B Courses, the original and best 18 holes. A quick book
in and a quick change and onto the first tee to be away on time. As I collected
my key for my locker I showed my duplicate keys and asked if they had found a
similar set. No way. So into the changing room, and just in case I went to the
locker I used last time and opened it. There in the middle of the shelf were my
keys. A miracle. The Key Fairy had been!
On the first tee a, slight breeze and let’s have a good day
on a fine course and hope with one miracle already, another could happen, but it
didn’t. Still a fine day out. On the last visit the greens on A were slow and
on B like grease lightning, this time they were the opposite way around. Still
we are amateurs after all. Back in the Restaurant most put liquid back in the
body and practiced with Khao Kheow Beef, before returning to The 60’s Bar and
topping up with Bobby’s Baby Back Ribs.
Max did the presentation to the Winner, Bob Noble, and the
technical winners before we emptied the bar of its remaining Carlsberg. Then I
staggered home and gave up my duplicate keys.

Bosman
The best thing about Noble Place is the tremendous
value in the green fee and the worst, the distance from Pattaya up the
notorious route 331. On the day the road was fairly clear and the course
pretty quiet, so what a treat we had. Even the food in the restaurant was
pretty good and the plate of noodles and seafood that one of our players
was served for 120 baht was so big that he was given a ladle to eat it
with. “Best value food he has had in Thailand” he said and he ate it
all himself. What a gentleman.
So to the golf and to the A & B Courses which were
in fine condition. A fairly strong breeze cooled the day down and the
greens were fast and true. In the A Flight we had a repeat performance of
Monday when Jeff Wylie came in with a fine net 67 to win the A Flight. In
second close behind was Kevin Dunne with a net 68 ahead of Takeshi
Hakozaki with net 70 and in fourth Alex Kazasis with net 71.
Relaxing

In the B Flight Cees Bosman came in with a net 69 to

King and Andersson make it three in a row
Mike Franklin
In an unprecedented run of consistent form, John King
and Mikael Andersson got it together once again to win, for the third
successive time, Shenanigans fortnightly competition.
Runners-up
Usa Chaiyosit and Max Busslinger.
This time a Pairs Scramble at Eastern Star Country
Club & Resort, returning a gross score of 67 and net 62 off their
team 5 handicap. However, not to be totally outdone, Usa Chaiyosit and
Max Busslinger made it ‘two in a row’ by again finishing runners-up,
also with a gross 67 but net 63.2 off their team 3.8 handicap. The field
only warranted two team prizes, but third in the order Tony Stevens and
Tai Kennedy are to be commended with their net 63.6.
Winners
John King and Mikael Andersson and Mike Franklin at the presentation in
Shenanigans.
Max goes back to Switzerland now, hopefully to return
mid-year.
Near Pin technical prizes went to Reine Helling, John
Oke, Mam Trayling and Mikael Andersson. The Long Putts were claimed by
Oile Helling and Im Woodruffe.
It’s goodbye to the Hellings until November, but a
very warm welcome back to Im & Ray Woodruffe from the UK, here for a
month and hopefully longer. Also, Claude Schlager from the USA made his
first appearance with Shenanigans.
March 2nd is the next outing, this time returning to Plutaluang
playing a Pairs Scramble on the South & East courses. Sign-up for
that on the list in Shenanigans and do take one of the mini calendars of
the years’ fixtures available on the notice board.

Stroke & Stableford
Thongpen
Nattaporn,
ladies flight winner
This test for 105 golfers was on the friendly grounds
of Pattaya Country Club, with its bland scenery but fine grassy fairways,
quick well kept greens and efficient and courteous staff.
On the day the course was in fine condition, the
booking in very efficient and the weather fine, all of which probably
lead to some fine scores in all 5 divisions. The A & B Flights being
Stroke, whilst the C, D and Ladies Flights were Stableford, and as they
say if you want to play Stroke get out and practice or visit the local
Doctor.
Johan
Reynisson, winner A flight
In the A Flight, 0 to 14, we had some exciting golf as
the best golf of the day was played, with a gross 72 and gross 73 being
recorded. However Johan Reynisson with his net 64 off a 9 handicap took
the flight with a net 64, whilst Mike Allidi with a gross 72 took the
‘Low Gross’ for the day. Second place in the A Flight was decided on
countback on net 69 with Mikael Anderson being second and Steinder
Eidsson being third.
Mike
Rushant,
winner B flight
In the B Flight, 15 to 18, we had a runaway winner as
Mike Rushant came in with a fine net 65 ahead of the evergreen Bob Benda
in second on net 69 and Kenny Mau third on net 70.
The C Flight, 19 to 23, proved a tight affair with
Peter Elder winning with 39 points ahead of a countback for second on 38
points, which was won by Stefan Hodge with Alan Sullivan third.
Ed
Trayling,
winner D flight
The D Flight, 24 to 36, also proved a close affair but
we were mercifully spared a countback as the winner, Ed Trayling, had 38
points, the second Colin Matthews had 37 points and the third John
Dearden had 36 points.
So onto the Ladies section and what a tight squeeze it
was as all three Ladies had 33 points and we had to get the calculators
out. In the end Thongpen Nattaporn won, with Saen Jarowoeng in second and
Mam Trayling in third.
Peter
Elder,
winner C flight
As usual Pattaya Country Club handled the Presentation
well, along with help from the usual crew to whom thanks must be given

Peacock Place Indoor Bowling and Snooker League
Mixed doubles Bowls produced
two very competitive matches this week as the league nears conclusion.
As usual Thaied - Edd and Mam Trayling put on a great
performance to hold Peacock to a 6 - 6 draw when the Peacock were 3 - 0
up after the first end. Then came the crunch match between Yellowbirds
and Peacock which may determine the league, Yellowbirds - David and Lek
started strongly before Peacock came back to force a 7 - 7 draw with one
end to go and then Peacock Sue put in a couple of superb bowls close
enough to put some pressure on and despite some brave firing efforts from
David the Peacock managed to stay ahead to take it 9 - 7 and go top. Next
weeks matches - Double Trouble v Yellowbirds and Peacock v Gin will
probably tie up the placings.
Three new teams are waiting to join in and others are
very welcome, come and have a beer and a free practice any weekday to
check out the carpet.
Snooker continues with Bill winning two catch up games
to make a three-way tie at the top. The leagues are below and include a

present, all together a 131 people. Who said the hash will be dead? It’s
alive and kicking. “Form a circle” shouted our tall skinny GM. New
shoes always welcome, remember Hammer a few beautiful ones, yammy yammy.
Hares Festering Streaker and A-hopper told us the paper is white and
checks are red and a lot of nasty dogs but no problem let Fini go first
and you’re ok. On On around the lake, first check on the road with
around us incoming Trucks and cars! Confusion everywhere but our King Yao
Yao found the paper. Good to see our Sir G.K.W., S.B. and R.B. running in
front, especially the General who has a new look! (Chang or cracks?)
Well the hares keep the pack together and the usual FRB
Peler, Toy Frog, Fireman, Fini and a guy named Woo Woo Ballwasher came in
first. The cracks grazing around 35 (what a life). For some reasons I must
do the paperwork, no problem. The dog who’s running with me he came out
of the bushes and was not nasty but very friendly making some new friends
specially F.D. No Trucking Idea was surrounded with virgins and tell me
his Ex coming back. Free Willy & Flipper busy with selling the rags
and also Lek selling her sandwiches. VV our hash p*** suffering from a
Hernia but present with his Belgians officers. “Form a circle” yelled
our Viking GM, raffle time. Energizer Bunny doing it on her special way,
F.D. win some prizes and throw them out the circle.
Charlie Manson surprised the girls with red roses but
had only 30, anyway they were happy. R.A. Sir Airhead invites Ewok to
serenade her and we all sing Happy Birthday! Hares on the ice and Fini,
lousy HHH signs hares and called me a hero for using always big and well
made signs (VV made them).
Steamy Lump presented a new T-shirt with a smiling
logo. GM takes over and he presented us a Catwalk. 9 sexy ones showed us
the new collection of lady’s shirts and cr่me de la cr่me a
Bikini, yeah she was the attraction! Unfortunately A.Holeo paid 2100 and
the girl will be marked for life. Steamy Lump iced, Sharon Tate & GM
for some reason I forget. Hares do you have a song, no problem Chicken F.
helps you a good and tuned life performance. R.A. Fini the Maggot iced,
Allahs A... & Lady it seems she got lost on the navy hash and came
back after 5 hours so Queen Marie surprised them with bells & rope to
keep them together! Time for the Hash hymn and the voice of S.S.
Tonight’s sponsor is Shenanigans, another funny and good Hash afternoon,
thanks Hashers.
C U next week.
PS: I want to thank manager Sai and her staff for the
delicious food and smiling service.
On On
Fini the F.
The Square Ring
Howie Reed
Did you miss me? Yep, last week The Square Ring was
missing from the suddenly hallow pages of the Pattaya Mail. Seems there
was a big slip betwixt the cup and lip. In the service it’s called a
SNFU. Situation Normal Fouled Up. But we’re back to enlighten the many
fans of the column in the land of the soon to be “draconian midnight
closing paradise” with no Carlsberg. Oh the shame of it all.
While away it was reported that both “One Glove
Michael” (Jacko) and “Two Glove Mike” (Tyson) were broke. Tyson
though is trying. He did make 5.85 USD in December. It’s estimated that
in his ring career he earned $450 million dollars. “It’s true that I
lost all of my money and that I have financial problems right now. But, I
am more happier now that I’m broke,” said Two Glove Michael. Oh well,
easy come easy go.
How about the pride of Ireland being Tyson first
opponent on the comeback trail? Could be. When Tyson came back from a
“state institution not of his choosing”. Aka “the Monkey House”
the place, he fought Peter McNeely. He KO’d him in 1. That was back in
the last Century 1995. This time the opponent could be Kevin McBride
(31-4), “The Clones Colossis”, who left the Emerald Isle after he
lost to Michael Murray who was 15-16 at the time. He now fights out of
Brockton Mass., the home of the great Rocky Marcanio. They have something
in common in that both fighters either win or lose by KO’s. The main
difference is that “The Rock” never got KO’d. Does McBride have a
chance? Depends on how far Tyson’s talent has fallen. Many suspect that
it’s fallen off the cliff. There is a good chance the fight will be
held in Ireland. That ought to be payback for Guinness.
Other heavyweight championship fights on the azure
horizon of Pattaya are probably Vitali Klitschko - John Ruiz for the
WBA/WBC title. Although Ruiz could fight himself for the WBA crown as
he’s not only the champion but also ranked #4. Actually Ruiz #1
contender is Hashim Rahman who hasn’t won a fight since he KO’d a out
of shape Lennox Lewis in South Africa. Wlad Klitschko gets Lemon
Brewester for the WBO crown. If that’s not enough George Foreman has
signed with Don King for a 20 million dollar fight against someone. The
rumor here is IBF Champ Chris Byrd who is also a King fighter. Foreman
will fight if he gets down to 225, which he last visited 30 years ago.
His weight now? About the same as a “gaggle of Baht Bus Driver”. A
Gaggle? Yep, more than 8 but less than 20.
Then we get Shane Mosley (39-2) vs. Winky Wright
(46-3) for the WBC, IBF & WBA Jr. Middleweight belts on March 13.
Mosley is already looking ahead to a fight with Felix Trinidad in the
fall. Always a problem when you look ahead. IF Mosley gets past Wright,
who looked less than stimulating in his last, he’ll take Trinidad to
the woodshed. Mosley took the Trinidad fight because his
“managements” said, “Oscar won’t negotiate.” The same with
Trinidad. Of course Oscar won’t negotiate. He says, “I’ll give you
12 million dollars.” “No we want equal pay with you.” Oscar:
“Next”. In this case next for Oscar is WBO Middleweight champ Felix
Strum of Germany on June 5. Strum cancelled his March 6 defense against
Kingsley Ikeke to get ready.
“Oscar de la Hoya is my idol,” stated Sturm. “I
have seen so many of his fights on tape, but I will definitely show no
respect in the ring.” Also on that card will be Bernard Hopkins against
some stiff all building up to DeLaHoya-Hopkins in the Fall. Hopkins will
tear the Golden Boy a new one.
Good news for one of the local lads. WBA #5 ranked
Prawet Singwangcha (21-2-1, 13 KOs), scored a sixth round TKO win over
Soleh Sundava (12-4, 7 KOs) of Indonesia. Now that may not sound like a
big deal but Singwangcha kept his PABA lightweight belt in the scheduled
12 in Mae Sod. The Thai “portsider” has had kinda of strange career.
In his third fight he got KO’d by Injiin Chi who fights Michael Brodie
for the WBC title on April 10 in Manchester. Then in his 6th bout he got
“demolished” by Japanese KO Artist Hiroyuko Sakamoto. Since then
he’s 18-0-1. Talk about comeback. If the name “Singwangchai rings a
bell, that’s because there are more than one. Brothers? Nope. All
sponsored by Mr. Naris Singwangchai, a wealthy boxing fan who financially
supports talented Thai prospects. So they take his cash and name. Heck of
a deal. How do I know that? Cause Joe Koizumi, Asia’s best boxing
writer, told me.
Enough is enough. What more is it going to take before
the boxing world shuns Indonesia like the plague or bird flu? For a
number of years now we have been forced to watch and hear “crooked
boxing PoBahs” pontificate on what they’re “going” to do to
protect fighters in that Third World Bastion of Boxing Hell. Another
fighter died in the last two weeks and one more is still in trouble. That
brings the death count to 3 this year alone and we’re not even through
February. Last month Antoniu Mosse died. This month Jack Ryan was added
to the KIA list. A straw weight Nicholas injured on the same card is
still not out of the woods. The official explanation? “Concerning the
high frequency of brain injuries and ring fatalities in Indonesia, the
medical experts of this country suspect that at least 75% of Indonesian
boxers have a very high content of APOE4 (Apolipoprotein E-4) - a kind of
protein in the brain appears to impair recovery from traumatic brain
injury.” “Medical experts” in Indonesia is an oxymoron.
What a total load of horse droppings. These fighters
are dying because the boxing people of Indonesia don’t care. The
almighty Rupiah means more to these third world thugs than a human life.
Is there anyone out there that thinks any boxing organization will do
anything? NO. “We have a program for Indonesia.” Bring on the Suds.
