PSC 37th Monthly Tournament

Friday March 12
Rayong Green Valley

The late change of the date from March 19 to the 12 and the rescheduling to an 11 o’clock start, probably were contributory factors to a quite poor turnout. Only 63 players turned out and only three of the players were ladies. Still, as they say good things come in little packages. Fine course, fine weather if a little warm, pity about the scores.

Ladies’ winner Saen Jaroennong receives her trophy from Chris John.

So to the newly designed course which has been modified to allow the players to start and finish at the new clubhouse and starts with a nice first hole over a pond. Nice walk on a nice day. The greens were in fine condition, fast and slick as is their normal condition.

On the day the scores were relatively average, probably due to the heat, still in the A Flight (0 to 12) Peder Haraldson came in to win with a net 73, ahead of Edwin Morris net 74 and in third Rob Brown with a net 75. It is always nice to see a nice progression with no countbacks and a feature of the day was that we didn’t have one countback.

An important putt to save a stroke.

The B Flight, 13 to 18, was a ‘little’ better on scoring with the winner Jim Little winning with net 69 ahead of Steen Poulson in second with net 70 and in third Ebrahim with a net 72.

In the C Flight, 19 to 22, the scoring was also not outstanding but saw Harvey Samuel triumph with 38 points ahead of in second William Turnbull with 37 points and in third Rick Bevington with 35 points.

We can usually rely on the D Flight, 23 to 36, to provide excellent scores, sometimes startling in fact, however on this day they fell into the same average bracket as the other flights. Winning with 37 points was Herb Schweiterman ahead of James Flanagan in second with 33 points and Clive Harris in third with 31 points.

(L to R) D Flight winner Herb Schweiterman, A Flight winner Peder Haraldson; Low Gross winner Mikael Anderson, B Flight winner Jimmy Little and C Flight winner Harvey Samuel.

As said, with only a few Ladies the scores in L Flight were never going to be outstanding, but all you have to do is score better than the rest and you win. The winner with 28 points was Sean Jaroennong ahead of in second Mam Trayling with 25 points.

So to the presentation carried out by Chris John and then we can all go home, but not before thanking all the sponsors and the team who all helped to make the day a success.

Low Gross: Mikael Anderson, gross 82

Highest Points: Ed Trayling, 38 points

Ladies Winner: Saen Jaroennong; Second: Mam Trayling

A Flight Winner: Peder Haraldson; Second: Edwin Morris; Third: Rob Brown

B Flight Winner: Jim Little; Second: Steen Poulson; Third: Ebrahim

C Flight Winner: Harvey Samuel; Second: William Turnbull; Third: Clive Harris

D Flight Winner: Herb Schweiterman; Second: James Flanagan; Third: Clive Harris

Long Drives A+B: Pelle Pederson; C+D: Per Krause

Long Putts: #9 A+B: Joe McArdle; C+D: Hiroshi Segawa; #18 A+B: John Hanley; C+D: Peter Loom

Near Pins: #5 A+B: Jeff Wylie; C+D: Danny Greer; #8 A+B: Pelle Pederson; C+D: Peter Loom; #13 A+B: Rob Peach; C+D: Rich Kubichi; #16 A+B: Don Richardson; C+D: John Swanson; Ladies: Saen Jaroenwong.

Dubliner come unstuck as the Vikings charge on

MBMG International Casuals League - Week 15

This weeks action saw the last unbeaten run come to an end, that of The Dubliner. Arnaud’s Gallic wonders, after a shaky start, have now settled into their stride. Last week they claimed third spot and on Saturday they comprehensively overturned The Dubliner 4-2 to claim second. Dubliner supremo Robbo was lost for words after the game but during the game he was making exaggerated comments that their’s a conspiracy between all the teams against his. Maybe he feels a bit like Claudio Raneri, given so much cash to assemble his team of stars and they just can’t get it together.

Also on Saturday form team Bangkok Blitz went to Pattaya and won 2-1. It seems that during Songkran Gabriel has won the rights for filming ‘Escape to Victory’, it’s based on a fictitious game set in Afghanistan - something similar to the original and you guessed it The Blitz Boys have been cast in the role of POW footballers. Can’t wait for its release date. Sunday saw four matches with the Bullies trying to halt an alarming run of results versus Bangkok United. It ended 1-1.

Manager Will Watts commented ‘This season never started for us, we’re building for next’. Leaders The Scans played the Germans. On paper a win for the Scans but the Germans pushed them to the limit before going down 5-2. The Scans have opened up a seven point lead with ten games to play. After last week’s setback to SCI Gecko Jakob made his team train every evening. “This is our one shot at the title, we don’t want to be bridesmaids any longer.”

Giant killers SCI Gecko fresh from beating the Scans could only draw 1-1 with bottom team Pattana. It was a last minute equalizer that robbed SCI of the three points. Shrewsbury, after a rocky period, beat BC 5-2 to move into the top half of the table.

Results (Week 15):

Les Gaulois de Bangkok 4 - 2 The Dubliner

German All Stars 2 - 5 Scandinavian Vikings

Racing Club Pattaya 1 - 2 Bangkok Blitz

Bangkok United 1 - 1 Bulls Head Brazilians

Patana 1 - 1 SCI Gecko FC

British Club Casuals 2 - 5 AFC Shrewsbury

Peacock Place Indoor Bowling and Snooker League

In a marathon last day of the season round robin mixed doubles bowls cup contest taking six hours, with some great bowling and very excited and enthusiastic ladies, it was the newest and ‘dark horse’ team Spotty Dog (Paul and Nut), who kept an unbeaten record and eventually won from Yellowbirds - David and Lek, proving the previous days practise paid off!

Left to right, back row: Danny, Paul, Bill; centre row: David, Gary, George, Gerry, Derek; front row: Lek, Tukta, Peacock Sue, Danny Sue, Nut, Nid.

The afternoon and evening were only broken up by intermittent singing and dancing on the rink, some replayed dead ends and sandwiches and the outcome was decided on the very last match of 10 before the medal winners were known.

The complete list of medals presented after the buffet dinner was:
Mixed Doubles Bowls Cup winners: Spotty Dog
Runners up: Yellowbirds
Ladies Singles Bowls winner: Peacock Sue
Runner up: Lek
Mixed Doubles Bowls winners: Peacock
Runners up: Double Trouble
Snooker winner: George
Rrunner up: Bill
The new season starts week beginning March 8.

Sunday Quiz League

It’s not the first time Keith Meehan won, but it’s close

IPGC Golf from Lewiinski’s

Sunday March 7
Green Valley -
White Tees
Stableford

1st Place A Flight: Paul Coutoumas, 42 points

2nd Place A Flight: Phil Mitchell, 40 points

3rd Place A Flight: Jim Brackett, 38 points

1st Place B Flight: Patrick Carroll, 38 points

2nd Place B Flight: Rick Sharp, 36 points

3rd Place B Flight: Robbie Bennett, 36 points

1st Place C Flight: Tom Barr, 46 points

2nd Place C Flight: John Barrett, 43 points

3rd Place C Flight: Frank Pilkington, 39 points

Near Pins: #13 John Emmerson; #16 Dave Boran

At the start of the day Tom Barr, who was visiting Pattaya to play in the Aussie-Thai Airways yearly tournament, produced a handicap card from Downunder evidencing a 20 handicap. At the conclusion of play he produced a scorecard, which reflected 46 points.

Both feats were considered remarkable by those present. John Barrett, who came from that tough Sugar Shack crowd across the street, started to tap some of his potential by amassing 43 points. That left third place in C Flight to Frank “The Pilk” Pilkington and his very creditable 39 points.

Patrick Carroll, one-half of the Golfing Carroll Siblings, made his last round of this visit a memorable one by standing atop the B Flight podium. His performance left Rick Sharp and Robbie Bennett to a countback with the wily Hermit getting the better of it. Paul Coutoumas who continues to show signs of warming up, topped the premier third of the field, it being 0 to 8 handicap, with his 42 points. Phil Mitchell continued his extraordinary play with 40 points off his 5 handicap.

Both he and Paul had 73 off the stick! Jim Brackett made sure all the A Flight medal winners shot in the 70’s as he had 38 points off his 7 handicap. Although they didn’t place it should be noted that Graham Johnson shot 77 and Jim Wickstrom 75.

Monday March 8
Burapha - A & B - Blue Tees
Stroke/Medal

1st Place A Flight: Eddie Blackwell, net 73

2nd Place A Flight: Paul Young, net 75

3rd Place A Flight: Peter Balon, net 75

1st Place B Flight: Saengsuri “Tik” Mayer, net 69

2nd Place B Flight: Keith Meehan, net 72

3rd Place B Flight: Bob Lindborg, net 76

Near Pins: #A6 Gil Gareth; #B8 Toni Putzi

Adi Mayer shows he can teach as well as play, as his lovely wife Tik was best on the day with her net 69. Adi, while encouraging, still chopped Tik three handicap strokes immediately. Second place finisher Keith Meehan, ever the gentlemen, graciously helped Tik up the podium steps and nary mentioned once that “he didn’t think chicks belong on a golf course.” Ah, but revenge would be his in 48 hours.

In the meantime, wily ol’ Bob Lindborg was relegating countryman Eddy Beilby to the honorable mention category with the aide of a countback. Eddie Blackwell returned to form after a two-week hiatus by taking the top spot in the top flight with net 73. Paul Young pipped Peter Balon on countback to round out A Flight.

Wednesday March 10
Khao Kheow - A & C - Yellow Tees
Stableford

1st Place A Flight: Julian Clarke, 38 points

2nd Place A Flight: Bob Patterson, 37 points

3rd Place A Flight: Jim Brackett, 36 points

1st Place B Flight: Keith Meehan, 35 points

2nd Place B Flight: Marlene Prudden, 35 points

3rd Place B Flight: Peter Wilson, 32 points

Near Pins: #A3 Rick Sharp; #C8 Keith Meehan

Julian Clarke, who will have returned to his adopted home of Houston by the time this hits the press, collected cab fare and airport tax with his first place in A Flight. Bob “The Senator” Patterson and Jim “Bar Fine” Brackett took second and third, respectively. Jim needed a countback to snare his position away from the Mamasan of Golf, Steve Mascari. Toni Putzi, Ian Ashenden and Jim Wickstrom joined the top fours finishers with rounds in the 70’s.

Keith Meehan, showing less chivalry then he did on Wednesday, stooped to utilizing countback on one of the fairer sex as he edged Marlene Prudden for the top step in B Flight. Peter Wilson, one of the nineteen members of the Society sporting that first and last name, wielded a countback to send Kenny Kutzing packing and thus, receive his first paycheck of this most recent vacation.

Friday March 12
Treasure Hill -
Yellow Tees
Stroke/Medal

1st Place A Flight: Jim Brackett, net 72

2nd Place A Flight: Ned Enright, net 74

1st Place B Flight: Grazi Amadeus, net 69

2nd Place B Flight: Sugar Ray Hanford, net 72

Near Pin: #17 Ned Enright

Grazi not content with only stealing away everyone’s girlfriend at Lewiinski’s (except Bob Patterson’s), Lek, decided he might take a little cash as well. His net 69 not only topped B Flight but was the best on the day. Sugar Ray Hanford matched his generous handicap to take the silver in B. Jim Brackett signaled that he will soon be departing stateside when he shot level to his handicap. If he keeps shooting like this, guys will pay for his taxi to the airport. Irishmen Ned Enright rounded out the payees with his two plus to handicap net 74, plus the Near Pin on the day.

Dave Lee excels again

IPGC TAGGS Golf from The Haven

Monday March 8
Century Ban Chang
Stableford

1st: Dave Lee, 41

2nd: John Desmond, 36 cb9 19, cb6 12, cb3 7

3rd: Achim Mueller, 36 cb9 19, cb6 12, cb3 5

4th: Graham Johnson, 36 cb9 16

The week started quietly as sixteen of the regulars had swanned off to Soi Dao for a friendly tournament.

Dave Lee at last scored another round that was good enough to have his handicap match Steddy Freddy’s, and with Freddy away at Soi Dao, he will be certain to stay that way next week. With such an outstanding score Dave was sure of first place and in fact by no less than five shots.

John Desmond making a second appearance in two outings to the podium secured second by virtue of a better back three from Achim Mueller. Graham Johnson rounded out the prizewinners in fourth place.

Surprisingly there were no twos achieved on the day and the pool was carried forward to the next competition.

Before presenting the prizes Richard Livingston, the resident PGA Professional, welcomed Odvaar Rykke and Jon Haugen and welcomed back Sandy McKee.

Wednesday March 10
Bangphra
Stable ford

Order of Merit

1st: Trevor Edge, 41

2nd: Martin Hayes, 37

3rd: Davies Stamm, 35

4th: Dave Lee, 34 cb9 13, cb6 11

5th: Paul Hartley, 34 cb9 13, cb6 5

With the golf trippers still away, Trevor Edge took full advantage to rack up another win, although with the depleted field it meant that he could garner little cash for his success as most of his regular donors were either away or sick.

Martin Hayes chalked up a rare placing in second ahead of newcomer Davies Stamm in third.

Dave Lee again made an appearance on the podium by way of a countback that saw him scoring an incredible eleven points on the back six with two blobs three threes and a two pointer to flatten Paul Hartley.

Bob Lindborg scored the only two of the day to sweep the pool which included the carry over from the previous outing, which made a very nice haul.

Prior to the prize giving, Richard presented Al Rolnik with his one-year membership, kindly donated by Sriracha Golf Club, for his win at Sriracha. Richard also welcomed new member Davies Stamm and welcomed back Dale Shier, Wilf Latham and Ian Middlemiss.

Friday March 12
Pattaya Country Club
Stroke play

1st Division

1st: Tony Barritt, 70

2nd: Per Aschan, 71

3rd: Arthur Hancock, 72 cb9 33

4th: Barry Traynor, 72 cb9 36

2nd Division

1st: Gavin Bradley, 65

2nd: Saranya Chaiyanont, 67

3rd: Brian Kelly, 68

4th: Philip Cass, 71

With all the regulars back and the promise of free food, it was back to two divisions as usual even with “The Doc” taking yet another day off with another lame excuse but possibly just trying to avoid being part of Trevor’s group of benefactors.

Tony Barritt took the first division with a solid 2 under from Per Aschan a further shot back in second position. Arthur Hancock performed steadily as usual to take third ahead of Barry Traynor in fourth. It was Barry’s first success since starting to play with The Haven and he vowed to sleep with the shirt he won rather than his wife later in the day.

Gavin Bradley scored the win that he has been threatening to achieve recently, with an excellent round of seven under to disappoint Saranya who also carded and excellent five under. Brian Kelly after a short break again took a placing ahead of Philip Cass in fourth. Philip at last played to his handicap after months of trying and attributed his result to the eighteen Heinekens that he consumed during the round “that helped to relax the hands”.

The twos were shared between Bob Lindborg (again?), Tony Barritt, Peter Emslie, Patrick Asklund and Barry Traynor.

Back at The Haven Richard welcomed new members Tim Waylett and Neil Parker and also welcomed back Dave Lacey, Magnus Johansson, Hans Collett, Norman Isherwood, Fred Chadwick, Kevin Taylor and Samantha Burke. It was Samantha’s birthday and she and Kevin provided a sumptuous buffet for all the days competitors before cutting the cake and force-feeding the already greatly distended stomachs of the motley throng.

Mueller & Mitchell Masters at Eastern Star

IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at the Bunker

Eastern Star Golf Resort was the venue for the Bunker Boys’ weekly medal event on Tuesday March 9. The golfers arrived at the course on a fine warm day and found the course suffering a little from the excessive wear found on many courses at this time of year. The greens, especially, were disappointing, having been recently aerated and sanded and certainly not cut for a few days.

However, the two divisions, cut at seventeen and under, tackled their task with their customary competitiveness and in division one Steve Nowell and PJ Redmond tied at net 73 to share third place.

At the top of the table Mikael Andersson and Mike Allidi could not be separated and their net 70’s bore testimony to their dedication to the game. Mike Allidi’s gross 75 was indeed the highlight of the day.

In division two Pat Murphy took third place with a steady 72 whilst Mr. Loy, Roy Mitchell, returned to form after many months in the doldrums, returning net 69 to secure runners-up place. One shot ahead was new boy, Achim Mueller, and his net 68 was the best round of the day. There were four birdie twos and the Bunker Super Sawng award was thus shared by Remy Guy, Harry Cowling, Mikael Andersson and the usual suspect, Steve Nowell.

At the other end of the lists Michael Dige did his best to win the Bunker Banana Booby by using a seven iron instead of a putter, on a “bad hair day” for him, but the award eluded him as Keith Hector and Barry Howden posted drab scores to share the fruit. No doubt the course will be in better condition when the Bunker Boys will return next month.

Another Birdie Bonus for Steve Nowell

At this time of year the course at Bangpra International Golf Club is a fusion of colour with the rich greens of the fairways subtly blending with the myriad hues of the bougainvillea, which abound there. This was the backcloth to the Bunker Boys’ weekly stableford competition on Thursday March 11. The field was cut at sixteen and under and the two divisions set about their task on lush fairways and the legendary racing greens.

In division two Bunker supremo Mick Ramshaw flexed his muscles for the first time in many a month to take third place with a score of 35 points, just one behind Paul Rose, whose level par 36 came tantalisingly close to the winning score of 37, posted by Pat Murphy. It was especially welcome for Pat as he had finished third on his previous outing.

In the top flight Bill Hewitt and Steve Nowell underlined their consistency with rounds of 37 points but the returning Dave Smith eclipsed both with his 38 points. It was yet another birdie occasion for Steve Nowell as he scooped the Bunker Super Sawng award for the eighth time since January, and the second successive round, prompting Mr. Loy to call for a handicap cut under Rule 19!

There were no such fears for Alan McGrory though, as his paltry 18 points was the saddest round of the day and guaranteed him the Bunker Banana Booby. The day ended with the ringing of the bell in the Bunker as Steve reminded everyone of his accuracy at beautiful Bangpra.

PSC Golf from Bobby Joe’s 60s Bar

Friday March 12
Bangpra
Stableford

Long time no see, but now the “visitors” have returned to exotic lands we can play this fine course and see if the greens are still as fast as we remember. Well, yes and no, some are some are not. Still, get on the wrong side of the hole and the ball will run and run. The course as a whole is showing signs of hard use in the last few months and little rain has caused many hard brown patches on the way around. Still what a pleasure to play.

Max Matthews and Derek Brook show their vouchers to the winner Walter Smith.

The day itself was hot and humid and as we went around all our clothes became saturated and it became most uncomfortable, however one of the good things about Bangpra is the hot pool in the changing rooms, so drop the soggy clothes, into the shower then slowly sink into the heat of the pool.

On arrival in the restaurant after such a hot day a beer and a rainbow ice cream put the world to rights. Then being Friday night, into the traffic and the slow trundle back to Pattaya and Bobby Joe’s, where hot dogs and chilly awaited the golfers.

First (Walter Smith) and second (Derek Brook) with Elvis, who made a guest appearance at Bobby Joe’s 60s bar in Soi Regent Marina.

The results were a continuation of the day before at the Cafe Kronborg, the winner being Walter Smith and the runner up being Derek Brook. Indeed Derek set a new record for Bobby’s, winning four shirts in all and along with two for Max saves me from writing too many names.

Then we had a surprise visitor as we returned to yesteryear, thought he was no longer with us.

Winner: Walter Smith; Second: Derek Brook

Near Pins: Derek Brook (2), Bob Noble, Max Matthews, Andy Evans, Mike Bullen

Long Putts: Derek Brook, Max Matthews

Coral Reef Bar holds annual spring tankard golf competition

The Coral Reef Spring Tankard Competition was held at The Soi Dao Highland Course last weekend. A field of 12 golfers and excellent weather conditions led to some superb golfing performances not least by Phil “Tiger” Hethershaw, who did a very convincing performance of bad golfing towards the end (as it would have been unethical for him to win his own sponsored event).

Steve “Ginger” Wiskin lifts the tankard with exhilaration after winning the Coral Reef Spring Tankard Competition.

The honours were eventually taken by Steve “Ginger” Wiskin with an excellent 39 points. Running a close second with a creditable 35 points was Jez “Northern Monkey” Lees. Third place was yours truly with a previously unheared 33 points!

Following the event was the usual post match analysis followed by copious amounts of cheese and wine and culminating by the now infamous biscuit throwing competition, the dubious winner of which was Mr. Lees (who, because his partner had gone to bed, got twice as many throws as anyone else!)

Seven o’clock the following morning saw several under par golfers, notably Steve “Champ” Wiskin, having obviously celebrated his previous day’s victory with a touch too much vigour. The pairs tournament was won by Jez Lees and our teutonic visitor Mr. Ralph, sweeping all comers aside for a confident victory. None other than the one and only Mark “fluff” Bonner swept up the singles prize.

Following lunch it was back to the bright lights of Pattaya and a slap up curry down at the reef ... an excellent weekend and thanks to all who participated.

3rd Shenanigans Ladies International Open on Friday April 2

This Tournament is exclusively for the Ladies

Shenanigans continues its tradition of promoting Ladies golf tournaments with the 3rd Ladies International Open on Friday April 2 at Eastern Star Country Club & Resort, the venue for all previous Shenanigans ladies tournaments.

The Eastern Star 18 hole championship course, ever popular with lady golfers, is the ideal venue with the ‘nines crossover’ positioned directly in front of the Clubhouse and, since the re-opening of the Resort in December 2003, the course, tee to green, has been presented to the very high standard that Robert Trent Jones Jnr. intended when the course originally opened in 1992.

Add to that the champagne treatment and warm hospitality that comes with a Shenanigans Ladies golf event and the girls are promised a rather special day.

Plenty of trophies and prizes to be won for performance and technical achievement and, failing that, chances in the lucky draw. The format is Stableford with a lazy start from 10:30 am, and plenty of time before that to hit some complimentary balls on the driving range. The customary Shenanigans snacks from Chef Sunny will be available between the nines, and a glass (or two) of the golden fizzy stuff from Kim to wash it down and set you on your way again.

The tournament party with a special Thai/Western buffet will be back at Shenanigans from 4:00 pm and the prize-giving and lucky draw follow at 6:00pm.

Full details with entry form are available in Shenanigans, and other bars, in the press and on the web page at www. shenanigans-pattaya.com or contact Mike Franklin at [email protected], and I will be pleased to process your entry.

Remember Ladies, this is a Shenanigans tournament exclusively for you to enjoy.

Gary Wedl took the A Flight with a net 71 on a countback from Rob Brown in second. There was a five way countback for third and fourth, on a net 72, with Jeff Wylie third and Alex Kazazis fourth. Hopkins, Richardson and Helgasson just missing out.

Irishman Mick O’Connor took the B Flight with a net 70 ahead of tournament director Dave Richardson in second with a net 71. Walter Smith was third on countback from Irishman Kevin Dinan in fourth, both having net 72’s.

One of the highlights of the month is the trip to this superb course and usually the list is full as it was on this day. The test for the day was the A & C Courses, both in pretty good condition and in C8 the par 3 that I personally find the hardest in the area and this is also for most golfers I know, the same, a real toughie and ball thief.

Walter Smith, winner
B Flight on Thursday.

On the day the scores were pretty average and 38 points was good enough to win both Flights. In the A Flight, 0 to 17, Derek Brook was back in the winner’s circle with a fine 38 points ahead of his fishing buddy Mike Gerrard in second on 36 points. Mike is an ex-entertainer on the boards in England and is always good for a song and a joke. In third was the ever-present Jeff Wylie with 35 points and in fourth was Ebrahim with 34 points ahead of Johan Reynissan on countback.

Derek Brook, winner
A Flight on Thursday.

In the B Flight, 18 up, the scores were similar to the A Flight with Walter Smith coming in to win with 38 points ahead of Harvey Samuel in second on 37 points. In third with 36 points was Per Krause, usually in the frame, ahead of a countback for fourth on 34 points won by Lief Kierkgaard ahead of Harald Gruber.

Special treat:

April 2 will be a special night on return from golf with food from ‘Big Joe’s English Food Co., Ltd.’ and a ‘special guest’ appearance.

3 Sisters Golf

The March 8 was a windy day for golf. With winds bending the treetops and blowing the balls off course and short, scores dropped dramatically from the previous weeks. Our winner for the day did not seem to be bothered by the wind. I guess being a former pilot helped to guide his ball through the air. Don Ratcliffe, not bothered by the winds came in with a score of 39 points. Don has been near the top a number of times in the past few weeks and finally won the bragging rights for the day.

Don Ratcliffe (right) was the winner on Monday and Jim Tully (left) was holding the bag.

Following close back of Don was Rollie Weese. Rollie who normally fights for the cellar position surprised everyone with a score of 37 points. He has been taking lessons at the driving range and his game has certainly improved. Good work Rollie!

Back in third and fourth place were Bob Benda and Herb Ishinaga. Both came in with 36 points. From there the scores started to drop down to the teens.

Again holding the bag was “Ole” Jim Tully. Tully can’t hear and can’t see but still hits the ball - sometimes good sometimes bad. Today it was BAAAD. Jim came in with a score of 18 points as he was chased by Joe Albright with 20. Last week Jim scored up in the 30’s but it seems that his swing deserted him in the wind.

PH3 Run #1044

Problem. Big problem. It is Tuesday morning and as I was cleaning out my hash bag, I noticed a couple of pieces of paper with Hash Notes written at the top. This was written by Poncho. Under that is just a lot of unintelligible Hash Hieroglyphics. Hell’s Bells. I am Hash Scribe.

Usually I do not take notes, but this cost me dearly last time I was scribe, as I could remember nothing, and did some ice time. Looks like it is a double-edged sword. Maybe I could request the mismanagement to spend money on a small tape recorder. No only joking. The only thing harder to understand than a Scottish accent is a drunken Scottish accent.

“Where did I get it wrong?” Well, let me go back to Monday 9:30 a.m. Bangladesh Embassy Bangkok - 10:15 a.m. Ekamai Bus Station - 10:16 a.m. Opened first Chang beer. After this it gets a bit hazy. 4:00 p.m. A nice short drive just past Siam Country club. This site we have used before, but not for a while. 90+ hashers, some old, some new. V.V. showing everybody his new body art (a hernia scar).

Our GM. Charlie Manson hobbles into the circle (well done Sharon whatever you did to him). New shoes dealt with and the hares Miserable C., W..ing and Rainbow tell us about the run. 5:00 p.m. and we are off. Plenty of trails. A couple of false ones. Some runners, some walkers. Since I have recently had my eyes renewed by LASIK, it is great to actually see paper again. Unfortunately, I think I will need to have my ears done, as I had great difficulty hearing “On On” called. At one stage I even found myself at the front of the pack with Sir Fossil, but this was not for long as I was soon passed by Rusty R.H., Fini the F., Tamp. and R.S.B., to name but a few.

6:00 p.m. The runners started arriving. The usual dissecting of the run, false trails, missing paper, checks etc., Beer and Lek’s hot dogs. More beer. Free Willy, giving us Old Kent Road specials on the Hash Rags. 6:30 p.m. The circle is called to order. Energizer Bunny gave away a stack of raffle prizes, icing quite a few. The hares were iced, but it was deemed a “Good Run” so no more there. Sir Airhead brought in some “old timers” Yankee Doodle (hurry back Ray), Gattling Gob (Great to see you again Eddie), KingYao Yao and myself. Icing started with K.L. not knowing what day of the week it was. Our GM then iced both the Hash flashers Tampax and Oddjob. No one to take that picture.

7:15 p.m. Things really starting to get muddled. Not the circle but me. Reminscing about old times with Yankee D. and Gattling G. So missing out as to what is happening.

I seem to remember the anniversaries were Fini the F. - 150 runs. Tamp. and Sharon Tate - 200 runs. Well done all of you. Charlie M. did the normal, with down downs for virgins and their sponsors; visitors (who were lucky enough to be given a limited edition of the Hash Book). Then it was the turn of that man who is the scourge of Karaoke bars all over Pattaya, Sir C. F., icing a bunch of talkers with a plagiarized Engelbert Humperdink song. (Now that is what I call punishment.) Dr. D. and King Yao Yao got the hemorrhoid helper treatment. S.S. was iced, but at least had his misses on his knee as she was named. 7:25 p.m. Yankee Doodle, a leaver, sang us his famous rendition of his name. 7:30 p.m. Hares song. 7:32 p.m. Hash hymn. 7:35 p.m. off to the hash bar, which was Classroom 2. Did not make it myself, but I am sure they treated us well, as they usually do. If I have made mistakes and misconstrued the truth I offer no apologies and you will need to take it up with Chang Breweries. Tuesday 11:20 a.m. Just finished writing this. I am off in another five minutes to Bangkok and Ekamai Bus station. Hope I make it back.

On On,
G.K.W.

The Square Ring

by Howie Reed

Trust that you’ve all recovered from celebrating St. Pat’s Day. Hope your “Kiss Me I’m Irish” button is tucked away for next year. Tomorrow there are some interesting fights throughout the world of boxing. In Lyon, France WBA Light heavy champ fights former champ Silvio Branco (49-6-2) fights former champ Fabrice Tiozzo (45-2).

Branco is one of those fighters that fights where the “Home cooking is”.

His ventures outside either Italy or Germany or against top-notch competition have not been successful. He lost to Svenn Ottke and Richie Woodall but posted a win over Glebnncoffe Johnson and Thomas Tate. Tiozzo was the WBA Cruserweight king until KO’d in 1 by “Old Man” Virgil Hill in 2000. In Puerto Rico WBO Straw Champ Ivan Calderon (18-0) defends against. Edgar Cardenas (30-11-2).

The most intriguing fight of the day comes from Wembley Arena when Audley Harrison (14-0) and Richel “The Dutch Sonny Liston” Hersisia (21-0) get it on. A step for both? Maybe. Last week former WBO heavyweight champion Herbie Hide was stopped in a tune-up bout by unheralded late sub Mendauga Kulikauskas (4-6-2). It was a bad cut that caused the loss but still a loss. That eliminates at least one English fighter that could “emulate Mr. L. Lewis”. A gentleman from England referred to Mr. Harrison “Fraduly”. I won’t use it. Don’t want the “Bomb Thrower from the Beach” lobbing another epistle “I do not have a bloated backside.” It’s muscle from partaking in the manly art of sipping and watching.

Last Saturday in Denmark WBA bantamweight champion Johnny Bredahl (55-2) retained his title with a unanimous decision (117-112, 118-109, 117-111) over Nobuaki Naka (17-1-2). Would really like to see Bredahl against WBC Champ Veeraphol Sahaprom (42-1-2). Will it happen? Maybe when pigs fly. In Las Vegas “Baby” Jose Mesi (29-0) survived a furious late rally by Vassiliy Jirov (33-2) for a “squeaky” unanimous decision from all three judges and The Square Ring 94-93. Mesi beat Jirov like a kettle drum until the 9th when Jirov turned the tables sending Mesi to the canvas. In the 10th Jirov decked Mesi twice more. Mesi help on the last 10 seconds for the win. Ronald “Winky” Wright (47-3) can now claim the WBC, IBF & WBA Jr. Middleweight titles as he took an easy UD (117-111 twice, 116-112, Square Ring 118-110) over Shane Mosley (39-3) in Las Vegas. Mosley was never in the contest which prompted trainer Emmanuel Stewart to say, “he gave up in the second round.” Mosley passed up a $12.5 million dollars rematch with DeLaHoya for 3 million against Wright and hopes for a “mega fight” with Felix Trinidad. Mosley not only lost the fight, his titles but the 9.5 million dollar bet. Silly boy.

“Due to limited space the following was omitted last week. The career of WBU welterweight champion Eamonn Magee (25-4) has come to an end with a brutal beating in his native Belfast. He suffered a compound fracture of the tibia and fibular plus a punctured lung after he was dragged from his car and beaten.” Now the Glasgow Daily Record is reporting the rest of the story. Seems Magee had a “snoot full” and got into a dust up with next door Joseph Clarke.

The two have feuded for years. This time it was over a snowman in Clarke’s yard that the Magee children disturbed. First Clarke talked with Magee and a settlement was reached to discipline the Magee kids. “But tempers later flared after the boxer’s wife and Clarke’s partner rowed. (Cat fight... cat fight.) The fighter, who had been drinking, then went to Clarke’s home and head butted Clarke on the front lawn of his home. Magee was driven from the scene by a friend, Clarke allegedly chased after him in another car. Clarke and an unidentified man allegedly smashed the front windows of Magee’s car with cudgels, then attacked him. “This applicant struck Eamonn Magee between 10 and 20 times to the leg area with the baton.” Magee had two fights against name opponents where a win would have propelled him into the limelight. Unfortunately he lost to both Ricky Hatton (28-0) and Oktay Urkal; (32-1) over 12 by unanimous decisions.

Good news for the lovers of Vegemite as power punching Aussie Paul Briggs (22-1) got off the canvas to defeat Mexican Jesus Ruiz (18-4) for the right to fight the winner of the Roy Jones Jr. - Antonio Tarver. (WBC light heavy title).

Pattaya sometimes visitor “Cousin” Bruce McTavish scored the fight 116-113 so that’s good enough for me. “Bruce rules”. Ruiz protested. Ruiz questions the scoring of round two when he knocked Briggs down but didn’t get a 10-8 round on any of the judge’s cards, one judge had it 10-10. What chance will a Mexican fighter have of asking for a “rematch” before the Mexican dominated WBC? Shirley you jest. Briggs has offered a rematch. A 10-10 round with a knockdown is strange. But heck anything is possible.

Briggs is an interesting character. He turned pro in 1994 but had only 3 fights until 2000. AT that point he was 2-1. Since then he’s 20-0. On the same card in Aussie was Thai Kiatachi “13 Coins” Riantower. He didn’t fare well. Got KO’d in 4 by Lovemore N’Dou (36-6-1) for the IBF Pan Pacific Title. “Lovemore no do?” “Lovemore do, you pay.” 13 Coins was 16 and naught until he took his show on the road. This loss at The Panthers was preceded by one to Daudy Bahari (20-0) on Bali. Stay home young man.

Aussie John Wayne Parr captured the S1 World Championships on March 4 before 10,000 screaming fans at Rajadumnern. Alone with the win came a cool 1,000,000 Baht although one can question if that’s good luck. The December winner Sureeya Sor Pleonchit was the first out of the eight man contest losing to Frenchman Jean. John Wayne’s fight with Jean was one that had the crowd in a utter frenzy. “These two boxers start bombarding each other since the bell was rang in the first bout. John Wayne didn’t spoil any second to snatch away his hard punch against Jean. Also Jean annihilated Aussi explicitly. The fight became more grueling when Jean’s blood is spread over his face in the final round. John Wayne kept on pulverize his French foe dangerously until the referee stopped the bout because of Jean’s freshy-bloody wound.”

In the finals John Wayne met Thailand favorite Nuangtrakarn Por Muang U-Bon. Unlike others bouts of S1 in the finals elbows are allowed and the contests goes 5 rounds. No problem. John Wayne was in control from the start. This was validated when the Thai lost control in the 4th and received a constant pounding in the 5th and final round to seal the deal. John Wayne Champion gets 1 million Baht, the Muaythai belt and the trophy presented by Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. Oh yes and a Atta Boy.
