PH3 Betty Boop Run 2004
Run 1057
Looks like I am the last option to find a scribe, appointed scribe
Cock-A-Leaky sent his cat. Sir Airhead please let him feel the ice bucket
next Monday, thanks.
So
here we go, Bill’s Bitch, VV, Bottomless Pit and myself, Flying Frog
started this Monday with a nice make-up sesstion in my place by our female
companions. I really looked like an old fat mamasan, ha ha. The other
‘girls’ were really handsome. So we were ready to cross Second road to
the Scandi Bar to sign up.
I’ve never heard so many wolf whistles along the road
by the locals. Arriving at Scandi’s there they were, the PH3 farang
transvestites, I was lucky to be the fat ugly mamasan, so everybody left me
alone. To the bus and in the direction of the new pier, where we made the
circle.
Today’s Run
Hares, Tadpole, Star Trek, Miss Chivas and Miss Kentucky
prance on in to tell us about the run. They told us an A-B City Run, follow
H signs painted along the road and so we went: starting up the big Buddha
hill to the top, along by Pattaya Park to Jomtien. After 1 hour we saw
lovely Tadpole waiting for us for a drink stop, a lottery ticket and a
whistle. It’s another 3 km she said to the ON IN (Thai km?) but first we
had to pass Miss Kentucky at a small river with a boat.
C’mon
girls, give us a smile...
Most of the real Hashers went trough walking or swimming.
To continue, we passed a trail with white paper until we came to Jomtien
Beach. Bottomless Pit, Kill Bill, Allah’s Nose and I stayed together
walking to the end until we saw “at last” the bus and the B-site.
Front-runners arrived 40 minutes before us, that’s what Fini said of
course? Everybody looked exhausted, why? It was only 1hour 50 min. Still
people missing Sir Airhead, Spunk Bubble and a few others, so hash hero,
Uncle Pervy rescued them with his beer truck.
The Circle
A few cold beers and some food and we started the circle
called in by today’s GM Chicken F**r. Raffle today by Care Bear, a lot of
special prizes given by the Hash Bars. Chicken F**er won a Free bar-fine in
the Classroom 2 with the most ugly dancer. Also a special raffle given by
the Hares, which I won the G-string from Star Trek and a game with 4 people
and Sir Airhead as leader from the game.
Taking a
break from the run...
Hares Tadpole, Star Trek, Miss Chivas and Miss Kentucky
on the ice. They were dressed as policewomen and military MP’s, nice
uniforms! I thought poor girls, and so I laid my towel on the ice.
Bhoooooweeeee, the GM pointed me in the direction of the ice bucket, and
this was a cold experience. Everybody voted for a good run, some too long,
boring, but hey guys, it’s only once a year that cracks make a run, so
what’s the deal? As far as I remember on that stage, because I was getting
real drunk, Bill’s Bitch was on the ice while being handcuffed by Star
Trek.
Best
dressed men, Bill’s Bitch and Odd Job.
And now the vote for the Best Dressed Male, our yearly
winners Sir Airhead and Uncle Fester knocked out in the first round by
newcomers Bill’s Bitch and Odd-Job. The final was an anonymous decision
Odd Job took the crown and the trophy. Congratulations.
Redundant Seaman had the prize for the longest legs in
Betty Boop history. Then time for the Best Dressed Female Seaman Swallow,
Tracey Sangthong with Seaman Swallow as the winner.
Hares
for PH3 run 1057, Miss Kentucky, Star Trek, Tadpole, and Miss Chivas.
Mac Dwarf in the bucket for being a midget followed by
Kilted Kike for waiting so long to return to the Monday Hash. Returnees On
In and the virgins. Anniversaries, Star Trek and Miss Kentucky for doing 5
Hares plus rewarded with their 5 Hares Hat, Butterfly Tiger for doing 200
runs. Next on the ice A. Arsehole and his lovely Allah’s Nose for doing
secret stuff in the bushes. Free Willy iced for not being dressed as he
usually does. VV iced for being VV. Then it was time for the Hares song,
Chicken F**er serenaded us with Barnacle Bill The Sailor, in a real female
voice, while the girls were dancing and jumping around. Time for the Hash
Hymn and off we went to Shenanigans for some great food, dancing, drinking
and partying until late. Thanks Kim and his friendly staff.
I just remember all the cracks sitting together and
making a lot of noise. For the rest, I ended up somewhere in Soi 6 with VV
and Bill’s Bitch. How did I get home? Don’t remember. Another great
Monday, I really had a very good time. See you all next Monday on Piss
Uphill’s run.

VFW moves into third and Cafe Ole is back in fourth
Pattaya Sports Club Friday Bowling League
Unlike the last league teams are moving up and down the
standings in a frequent manner. VFW Post 9876 has won four points for three
weeks in a row and is moving up the ladder. With two of their regular
bowlers missing, Ow led the way for VFW with a 204 game and 545 series to
lead her team to a four-point sweep over Nam Tip.
200
bowlers: Tue, Ow, Konrad and Bill
Cafe Ole took four points from Jack & Tar with Somrak
knocking down 525 pins for Cafe Ole.
Captain La led her first place team to a two-two split
with Alt Koelle knocking down 551 pins in the match. Second place team
Brother D gains a bit on first place as they took three points from House of
the Golden Coin. Bill was best for Brother D, bowling a 213 game, 541 series
and Captain Konrad rolled a 203 game and 533 series. Tue, bowling as a spare
for Golden Coin, really got hot and rolled games of 245, 199, 184 for a 628
series. She has the league high game and series after week 13.
Last place Cafe Kronborg managed a two-two split with Q Cars as neither
team bowled well.
400lb tiger shark puts up 2-hour fight
PSC fishing from Bobby Joe’s 60s Bar
On Friday June 11, the morning was still young when I
received a phone call from Frank Collins, of the Kitsana and Fish and
Trips, who told me he was on his way back with a 400 lb tiger shark that
had been landed and could not be released as it had been hooked in the gut.
Graham
and Lynn with their ‘catch of the day’, a 400lb tiger shark.
The previous night I had sat with Frank as he introduced
me to his cousin, Lynn from Worthing Sussex, who was on her way on a round
the World trip with Graham, and Frank was going to take them out on his
boat the next morning to experience the ‘Real Thai World’.
Setting out from Bang Saray early in the morning, the
weather was fine as Captain Ting took them to one of the spots known to
him, and Frank, where the ‘Big’ fish hang out. After baiting the big
hooks up, the lines were cast out and the waiting started.
Some days the wait is all you get and you never hear the
scream of the reel, but on this day the reel screamed pretty quickly and it
soon became apparent this was a shark and a big one. Sharks fight, and it
takes a lot of strength and perseverance to bring one in. Two hours later
the fight was over and the fish was on board, and what a fine beast.
This could not be beaten and so it was time to go home to enjoy a shower
and a cold beer and reflect on the day. T.T.F.N. and Tight Lines.

Nongprue Cup 2004 kicks off amid football fever
Suchada Tupchai
Amid the height of current football fever in Europe, the
fourth annual Nongprue Cup kicked off last Saturday, June 12, with a similar
fanfare complete with cheerleaders from Hollywood Pub.
Two special teams, Pattaya - Banglamung VIP’s and Jam
Jam United took to the pitch to open the month and half long competition.
Fast and
furious action on the pitch during the opening game of the Nongprue Cup
2004.
The Pattaya-Bangalmung VIP team, led by Chanyuth
Hengtrakul, advisor to the minister of tourism and sports included along
with city councillors and prominent community leaders, however, they were
wise but not fit enough to defeat the much younger Jam Jam United captained
by Aum-amarin Nitipon. The fast and furious match drew cheers from
spectators and cheerleaders as Jam Jam downed the VIP’s 8 to 3.
The
Hollywood Pub cheerleaders put on a show for the opening and raised the
pulses of competitors.
The competition, now in its fourth year has been
successful within the community and is strongly supported by the local
government and private sectors.
Twenty teams will battle it out on the Nongprue field
until July 25 with the winners receiving the coveted H.E. Sontaya Khunplome,
Minister of Tourism and Sports trophy and a cash prize of 30,000 baht.
The opening ceremonies were presided over by Pinyo
Tanwiset, head of the Provincial Administration Organization (PAO) and Mai
Chaiyanit, head of the Nongprue District Administration Organization (DAO)
and president of the Nongprue sports association.
The tournament aims to further promote sport within the
community’s youth sector for a healthier lifestyle and the ability to work
within a team, sporting or otherwise.

The Helicopter had a very good evening, taking both the game

Landlord all at sea with the Marines
Golf from Shenanigans
Mike Franklin
The aborted Pairs Scramble at Eastern Star Resort on
Tuesday June 8 was certainly not without its moments. The persistent and
often torrential rain since the early hours had softened up the course
sufficiently for there to be a ban on golf carts. However, neither the rain
nor the absence of carts deterred the majority of the field from waiting
patiently on the tee and rapidly getting soaked but, after a short plod down
the fairways, it seemed sensible to respect the weather conditions and turn
for home.
Kim
Fletcher with three of the Marines lining up for golf, err, wet grass
surfing for the pairs scramble at Eastern Star. Or should that be five...
Not so with the Landlord however. Fuelled by a late night
session the previous evening, in the company of members of the US Marine
Corps, Kim’s enthusiasm to play the game whatever the weather and ignore
the conditions prevailed, so his group teed-off from the 10th.
Ignoring the scheduled pairs scramble format, and himself
being without a partner but comfortably in the company of four US Marines, a
five-ball scramble was definitely on. Not a lot more should be said as to
the manner in which this was played, but one image in particular perhaps
says it all. Kim, seen with three of the Marines lining up a putt, while the
fourth takes aim with the putter. Or maybe it was just a demonstration of
‘wet grass surfing’.

Shenanigans subsequently went out for a second attempt at a Pairs
Scramble at Eastern Star on Tuesday June 15, but five-balls were not
allowed.

Claus Birk Thomsen left the field two strokes behind in
winning the Monthly Medal for June 2004. In so doing, Claus became
eligible for the year-end Gold Medal competition, which ironically, is
currently held by the second place man in A Flight, Joe Mooneyham.
Joe was followed by golfing luminaries Steve Mascari
and Jim Brackett. Serge Straeten matched Joe’s net 67 but because of the
handicap split found himself atop B Flight. Kevin Bowman put a count back
on Dave Boran. J.J. Wright tidied up the podium by standing on the fourth
place B Flight step. The festivities of the day were further enhanced by a
raffle back at Lewiinski’s where wine, golf equipment and other gifts
left many smiling. Owner Steve Mascari also enhanced the technical prize
pool by sponsoring two additional Near Pin awards.

2nd Place: Jez Lees, net 69
While the Sunday night party was excellent it did serve
to dent the golfing ardor of the society come Monday morning. A small
field took on the always demanding layout at Treasure Hill and found it to
be in as fine of condition as can be remembered. Golf Manager John
Emmerson led the boys out and led them back in as he carded a net 67 to
take top honors. Jez Lees pocketed the second place winnings.

victory was followed by Guam’s John McHugh and Saipan’s Ron Hodges. In
B Flight, Joe Mooneyham continued his recent fine form by netting first by
one over John Hillier. Dave Boran who took the brunt of Sunday’s count
back turned the tables of Neil Cameron and John Horton to secure the last
spot in B Flight. Shamelesss Seamus Brennan’s 36 points was also good
enough for first in C Flight. Ken Kutzing, showing little respect for his
elders, stole second in C Flight from Mike Craighead, yep on count back.

The prospect of a short drive to and from the course ensured a big
turnout at nearby Phoenix. The course which has been continuously
improving over the last 12-18 months did not disappoint. Gary Blackburne
was man of the match at net 67 edging sizzling Mike Allidi and always
tough Steve Mascari in A Flight. Bob Lindborg tiptoed one clear of Perry
McNeely and our June Monthly Medal winner to take B Flight. Perry was the
better when he compared his back 9 score to that of Claus’. Visitor Paul
Joyce edged Dave Boran for the C Flight gold. It should be noted that it
was Dave’s third podium appearance of the week. Noi Romanee showed
little sisterly love in bumping Poo Supraporn off the podium for the last
check in C Flight.
Six of the Best for Smithie
IPGC Bunker Boys at the OK Corral
Regardless of what may be written elsewhere Mr. Loy and the Pattaya
Golf Society, the Bunker Boys, are the original group bearing the name in
Pattaya. Any similarity between us and our friends at same-same.com merely
proves that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and for that we
are extremely grateful.
That no doubt explains why the Bunker Boys received a
gushing welcome, on Tuesday, June 8, from the manager at Eastern Star,
presuming it was the second booking in six days from the group.
Sadly they could not enjoy the hospitality for long
because the course was waterlogged after a long storm and the players made
the short detour to a drier Century Ban Chang.
The format was medal and with the cut set at 13,
another Bunker record, the two divisions took to the wet fairways. In
division one Mark Joshua and Steve Nowell contested the honours with
Steve’s net 75 easily blowing away the challenge of Josh’s 81.
The old hands and long handicappers in division two
found they had some unusual playmates as the lower handicappers normally
associated with the top flight had been relegated because of the
‘cut’. One of them, Dave Smith, played the finest golf of his life in
shooting a six-under net 66, and this included a ten and a double bogey on
holes eight and nine. His back nine was a prodigious affair of gross 35
and he took the flight in style from Brian Bellis’s 82. Dave also shared
the Super Sawng award for his birdie two on the fifteenth hole, Mike Lloyd
emulating his feat and pocketing a little something as well. Mark Joshua
was confident of success in his pre-match conversation with Mr. Loy and
his prediction of a sub-80 round hung around his neck, as did the Bunker
Boys Banana Booby, after his showing of net 81. The smile was also to
disappear off the face of Mr. Loy as he was reminded that the local
“lift and drop” rule only applies to fairways and his card was
withheld. It had been a long day indeed.
Wilko in a soggy victory at
Khao Kheow
Khao Kheow off the yellow tees is a long course, and on
Thursday June 10, when the Bunker Boys went there for their weekly
stableford event they found the A & B courses extremely wet after a
few hours of heavy rain. There was to be no ‘run’ whatsoever on the
fairways, no flight through the air and plugged balls squelched on and off
the fairway. Securing par would be a tremendous achievement and try as
they might, everyone found it an impossible task. This did not deter them
however and at the halfway mark the lead was shared by Bob Pearce and
playing companion Len Jones. They remained neck and neck right up to he
last hole, when Bob put his tee shot into the water, but by that time
Brian Wilkinson had made his charge with a fine performance on the back
nine, adding twenty points to his first nine tally of nine and he took the
day by four shots from Len Jones (25) and Bob Pearce and Ray Handford
(24).
Unsurprisingly there were no birdie two’s but Angus
MacFarlane’s golfing education continues and his prize as teacher’s
pet came in the form of the Bunker Boys’ Banana Booby which Mr. Loy
dutifully presented at the OK Corral whilst the group continued to dry out
their shoes and socks! It was all proof that one can have fun, even on the
gloomiest of days, providing one is on the golf course with friends. The
real Bunker Boys’ website is at http://www.thebunkerboys.com. Log on and
you may be our 20,000th hit!

Bangpra
Stableford
With many regulars not able to play on the day, for
various reasons, the turnout always looked to be small. On waking up and
looking out of the window, it was pouring down, so many people decided to
stay in bed, and this was wise on many courses where the players were rained
off, but it did further reduce the turnout.
Bill
Knight took top honors in a wet day at Bangpra.
So, after a warm breakfast, it was a small wet group that
departed in the pouring rain, to hopefully play a round of golf. The drive
down was in the pouring rain and after booking in the start to the round was
wet, very wet. As so often happens, when ‘He’ likes you the rain is
going to stop and the day develops into a cool pleasant day.
Bobby
Joe returned to end the night on a high note after a soggy day of golf.
In the circumstances Bill Knight came good to win from Gary Harrison.
Back at the ranch as the players took in well-earned food, Bobby made his
much awaited return entrance from hospital and so the night ended on a high.

Monday June 7, lucky for some unlucky for others.
It was lucky for John Sinclair as he came thundering in
with 41 big points. John has been at the top of his game now for a couple of
weeks, as he either wins or gets near the top. As his handicap begins drop,
he will be with the rest of us struggling to make his handicap. So far, John
has done a good job as his driver and putter keeps his game in tact.
Winner
John Sinclair (right) and Jim Tully holding the bag.
One other golfer came in close, as newcomer Terry Morris
came in nipping at John’s heels with 40 points. He got close but could not
quite get there to take the lead. Following a few points back was John
Gibson with 38. John has been near the top for a while now and he should
also be dropping in handicap. Mr. De Pooter and Dick Caggiano came in next
with 37 points as the rest of the field faded away.
Again the geriatrics fought for the bottom position. Jim
Tully, Marvin Smith and Rollie Weese were playing together trying to see who
would slip into the cellar. It was not a contest as Tully charged into the
cellar with 17 points. Marvin and Rollie both came in with a respectable 26
points each. When Rollie, and Marvin leave for the USA it looks like Tully
will have a rough row to hoe.

Thursday June 10
Phoenix, Stroke
Phoenix these days is one of the finer courses on the
circuit and what is just as important it is pretty close. On this day the
weather was pretty foul as we set off for the course and even as we reached
the first tee, Mountain 1, the rain was still coming down heavily. The
surprise was that the course allowed us to use carts, obviously they knew
something we did not, and as it turned out they were correct.
Jeff
Wylie as he shot a super gross 75 and net 64 at Phoenix.
As we got a few holes under our belts the rain slowed
down until by the start of the second nine, the Ocean, the rain had stopped
and the day developed into a really nice day.
This course is fine and now the course is in the process
of being toughened up has jumped up the rankings of the local courses. With
three nines it is perfect for allowing one nine to rest and recuperate and
on this day it was The Lakes, most peoples least favourite.
Joe
Vanderwegan, net 70, took top spot to win the B Flight on June 10.
Phoenix is one course where you can shoot a great round
when things are going well for you, and on this day, things went really well
for the A Flight (0 to 17) winner, Jeff Wylie as he shot a super gross 75
and net 64. Second best round of the day was shot by the second in the
Flight, Bill Plath who shot a net 69. Third was Takeshi Hakozaki with a net
73.
In the B Flight (18 up), the scores were not as good but the winner was
Joe Vanderwegan with a Net 70 ahead of in second Arthur Bailey with a net 71
and in third place Alec Backlund with a net 73. T.T.F.N.

The Rainy Season
Golf with the Bunker Boys
Tuesday June 7, the day started wet and miserable in
Pattaya but the faithful turned up at The Bunker for their Tuesday golf as
usual.
Khao Kheow was the venue and the rain fell steadily on
the journey there, but lady luck smiled on us, on reaching the entrance, the
rain was easing off and by the time we teed off at 11 a.m. it had stopped.
Playing off the yellow tees on courses A and B on wet,
but quickly drying, fairways and greens, 18 holes were completed in 4 hours
on a deserted course. Sitting in the clubhouse afterwards enjoying a
well-earned beer, the rain came again, and how it came! A well-earned beer
turned into a few well-earned beers as the golfer’s discussed their good
fortune at completing 18 dry holes!
The winner for the first time was Lez Hall - well played
Lez! Joint second place went to two ever-present players, John Preddy and
Jim Payne.
The Bunker Bonanza was not won and the Bananas were
awarded to Eddie Rudkin for his last place.
Ex-matelot Mick wins at the
navy!
Thursday June 10 saw The Bunker Boy’s visit the Royal
Thai Navy Golf Course at Plutaluang for a stableford competition. Playing on
the South and East courses we were once again very lucky with the weather,
no rain!
Mick Ramshaw, playing off his new Pattaya Sports Club
handicap of 24 took first place with 38 stableford points, in second place
came Duncan McGee with 37 stableford points and tied in third place were
John King and Bruce Lawrence both with 36 points.
The Bunker Bonanza was, yet again, unclaimed and The
Bunker Bananas were awarded to Vic Simmons.
As of June 1 golf with The Bunker Boy’s playing out of
The Bunker Bar in Soi Chaiyapoon will no longer be associated to the IPGC in
any way. You can read about golf and all other activities at The Bunker on

1st Place C Flight: Kevin Moraghan, 38 points
2nd Place C Flight: J. J. Wright, 37 points
3rd Place C Flight: Greg Peck, 37 points
We will have to wait a couple days before the evidence
mounts for Greg Peck’s recognition in the title. On this last Sunday of
May, Greg managed only a C Flight third, albeit a victim of count back loss
to the newly returned J.J. Wright. The lower flight was won by frequent
visitor from Korea, Kevin Moraghan, who was able to parlay a few vacations
days from his new civilian job to sneak back to the Land of Smiles. In
increasingly better performances, B Flight was carried by Gareth Gill (or was
it Gill Gareth) and his 39 points. Visitor David Knight from the Philippines
contingent edged local philanthropist Pete Stonebridge on count back, which
was to be a popular tool in each of the flights. Korean visitor, William
Zeigler, turned a like trick on Wacko Jacko, making more of his 41 points on
the back nine to take the top rung in A Flight. Johnny McHugh strode in from
Guam for his extended stay and kicked it off with a count back win over
Philippines guest Mike Haney and frequent long stay friend, Jim Brackett.

Ah, there is our celebrity namesake now. Greg Peck, whose
ear-catching name never fails to invoke comment, was man-of-The-Match with a
net 65. He took B Flight by two over Serge Straeten and three over Ben
Findon. Robert Sellick, who had been singing the praises of local teaching
pro Richard Livingston, showed why, with a net 67 in A Flight and a Near Pin
as well. Robert was two clear on Golf Manager John Emmerson and three up on
the duo of John Hillier and Rick Sharp. Much to Rick’s chagrin, John was
handed the third place booty by virtue of the dreaded count back.

Another big crowd, affording three prizes in three
flights, ignored the increased price of a holiday and ventured south to play
Banchang. Jack Grindvold, wanting no part of a count back loss like that he
suffered Sunday, made sure on the course and won A Flight with a day’s best
39 points. Mike Treloar, a new guest from the Philippines, didn’t realize
then implications of putting a count back loss on owner/proprietor Steve
Mascari. He got out of town before Steve could put him on double secret
probation for the indiscretion.
You read it correctly, the Clubmaker to the Stars did
reclaim a bit of that old Aberdeen Magic when he bested Joe Mooneyham and
John Horton for the top spot in B Flight. The gravity of this occurrence
nearly put Neil in the title slot. However, our week’s Oscar winner showed
he was the right choice as he took his third podium spot in as many outings
and his second consecutive lower Flight blue ribbon. As if that wasn’t
enough, he tossed in a near pin as well. Local principle Jez Less and
frequent player Jan Eriksen trailed Greg in respective one stroke increments.

The last day of the week was a chance to utilize the Bogie format which we
borrowed from our IPGC mates, The Haven. It is, therefore, only fitting that
the best score of the day, plus four, was handed in by a fellow who splits
his time between the two venues, that being the scourge of Green Valley, Bob
Lindborg. It was a frightening wake up call to all concerned that Bob’s
prowess was spreading to other courses. Dave Blakey also gave the course a
thrashing in this pseudo Match Play format, by going three up around the
Robert Trent Jones, Jr. design and taking second in B Flight to Bob. The
Flight was rounded out by Sugar Ray Hanford. A Flight saw John Emmerson
finish jointly with Ray Dell and Nigel Simpson. Because John does the count
back Ray and Nigel were not surprised to come second and third, respectively.

Lions Club 2004 International Golf Tournament
A great day raising community awareness
The Lions International Charity Golf Tournament was
held at Sriracha Golf Club this past Saturday. It was clear to all that
Siam Golf Properties has done a lot of work to improve the golf course,
most notable was the drastic improvement of the greens. Once having the
reputation of being hard and unreceptive, the greens proved to be in
superb condition, with players being able to hold the green easily.
Tournament
organisers and some of the happy winners at the annual Lions Club Charity
golf Tournament.
In addition, many fairways have been reshaped, giving
the golf course more definition and a return to its original design
concept by Gary Player. All the participants commented on the improved
turf condition and overall appearance of the entire course, excited to
return for another round. In addition to the golf course, the management
went out of their way to ensure that the event was a success, and, after a
day on the course, players moved back to the clubhouse for a buffet dinner
and prize giving. Since the aim of the day was to have fun and raise
funds, results were discarded, with everyone settling for a food and
drinks amongst good company.
The Lions Club of Jomtien Pattaya is keen to make Sriracha Golf Club
the home for this popular annual event and thank them for all their hard
work.
The Square Ring
Mark Twain wrote, “The story of my demise is greatly
exaggerated.” For a while it looked like Dr. Jose Sulaiman, founder and
President of the WBC (World Boxing Council), was going to be able to write
the same words, t’was not to be.
Last Monday the WBC filed for Chapter 7 Liquidation. This
final step was taken after a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filed in 2003 after
Graciano Rocchigiani won a $31 million dollar (USD) judgment against the
WBC. Didn’t get the job done. “As much as the WBC would like to satisfy
the judgment, it is simply impossible for the WBC to pay Mr. Rocchigiani the
staggering $31 million dollar award. Still, at all times, the WBC has done
everything in its power to comply with the procedures and orders of the
Federal Court in New York and of the Bankruptcy Court in Puerto Rico.
“In a last attempt to give Mr. Rocchigiani redress, the
WBC recently made a substantial monetary settlement offer to Mr.
Rocchigiani. Unfortunately, Mr. Rocchigiani rejected this generous offer,
which itself far exceeds what Mr. Rocchigiani could hope to recover in WBC
liquidation proceedings.”
Mr. Rocchigiani could have had some of something and now
he gets nothing of nothing. No rocket scientist heh!
As both regular readers know the WBC has a “special
relationship” with the Land of Smiles. They’ve held two conventions here
with a third one planned for Phuket in October, which is obviously now
toast. The WBC president, Dr. Sulaiman has received number honors from the
His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great in recent years. Two Thai
fighters that will be immediately impacted are Veeraphol Sahaprom (43-1 WBC
Bantam Champ) and Pongsaklek Wonjongkam (51-2 WBC Flyweight Champ). Both
will now be searching for other ranking organizations and new titles. Both
have the credentials to call the shots if they’re willing to travel.
That’s the ‘Ethiopian in the fuel supply’ to borrow a line off Bill
Fields.
The WBC will obliviously lose the sanctioning fees from
fights between Erick Morales/Carlos Hernandez (130), Arturo Gatti/Leonard
Dorin (140) and a ‘really big’ double dipper on June 28 in Yokama
between Masamori Tokuyama/Katsushige Kawashima (WBC 115) and Eagle
Akakura/Satoshi Kogumazaka (WBC 105).
The demise of the WBC will impose an economic hardship on
the boxing. It’s an economy that doesn’t need to take another hit. We
can thank the bum from Germany, Mr. Dolt Rocchigiani.
What’s the Square Ring without an update on the trials
and tribulations of our favorite Yodsanan 3K Battery Nathachai? That’s
correct. The Square Ring without a 3K story is like a ship without a rudder,
a bar with no dancer’s or an old Geezer in Land of Smiles with no Teelock.
Here’s the latest.
Someone announced that 3K would fight Steve Forbes for
the WBA 140 title on August 7 at the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket,
Connecticut, USA. The fight would serve as chief support for Acelino Freitas
(35-0) against Diego Corrales (38-2) for the WBO Title at 135. Yodsanan’s
folks, Banner Promotions, issued a statement that “there is no fight at
this time. Negotiations are under way.”
Former Champ Wayne ‘The Pocket Rocket’ McCullough’s
was due back in the ring tomorrow night against Uganda’s John Mackey. Not
going to happen. McCullough injured his left hand in training so no fight.
“Next summer will be 10 years since I was world champion and I want to be
fighting for a world title again by then, possibly at super bantamweight. It
was an old problem which I aggravated in training. I’ll see a doctor in
America before making any plans. I had a cortisone injection six weeks ago
but my hand began to ache. I didn’t want to go into the ring with a
disadvantage.”
McCullough would have been the ‘real’ fight on a card
featuring Audley Harrision against Tomasz Bonin (26-0). In one of those
“How about them apples moments” the same night, tomorrow, the gentleman
who gave McCullough his last lost Scott Harrison finally defends against
William Abelyan for the WBO 126 title in Glasgow.
Some of you that watched De La Hoya - Sturm might have
thought that Sturm got jobbed. Our Patrick the Flying Frog sure did. “Hi
Howie, what a big pay-off by those judges, did they put 3 blind judges? Even
De La Hoya was surprised with the result. Common be real, Sturm landed
almost all his jabs on De La Hoya’s head, this for 12 rounds, De La Hoya
did some good body work, but brought never Sturm in danger. For me Sturm was
the winner or minimum a draw. I thought pay-offs under the table exist only
in Thailand but now it flew over to the USA.”
Patrick of course owns Patrick’s Belgian Restaurant and
Cafe in Pattaya.
Watching the fight I felt it was one of those “could go
either way deals.” Checking the ‘official scorecards’ each judge
‘stood alone’ in one round. That in itself is unusual, but it does point
out that contrary to my pal Flying Frog, I’m not sure that “anything
flew over to the USA.”
Sturm fought well, got lots of exposure and a nice
($650,000 USD) pay check. Too bad his promoter Klaus-Peter is now acting
like a jerk. He filed a protest. The basis? Dammed if I know. See what you
think. “Almost every boxing expert in Germany and in the USA disagreed
with the result. They all saw Felix Sturm as the winner. We believe that the
official decision was incorrect. Perhaps the judges in Las Vegas were
distracted by the overwhelming presence of the upcoming big fight between
Oscar De La Hoya and Bernard Hopkins, which was already scheduled.” Good
ruk!
I was always advised that, “There are no women fights
in Thailand.” Guess no one has ever seen a couple of “nefarious women of
the second category or OK Kotay” go “fist city” over a prospective
Teelock. Got a note from Mr. Songchai to announce that in honor of the
Queens Birthday there will be a women’s boxing promotion on August 12.
It’ll be a Muaythai style event so if you’re tired of the “better be
listened too” in your life whacking you around, go on line at
www.muaythai.co.th and get more information. Match her against someone that
will provide a real challenge.
Of more immediate interest is the fact that ABC
superbantam champ, Wethya Sakmuangklang (56-4) was the aggressor against
Thongcharoen Mahasapcondo (1-7) before stopping him in the 5th round.
Wethya’s claim to fame, such as it is, was that he
challenged Guty Espadas Jr. for the WBC feather title in June 2000. Actually
it wasn’t much of a challenge for Espadas as he got a unanimous decision
(116-112,116-112, 118-110). Would I drink to that? You bet! “It’s Five
o’clock Somewhere.”
Thailand Body Building Association reappoints its president
During Thailand Body Building Association’s recent
annual general meeting, Pakpong Kriengsak received the majority vote from
association members to be appointed as the association president for the
second consecutive year.
Pakpong
Kriengsak, Thailand Body Building Association president for the second
consecutive year.
Pakpong said, “I will continue develop and promote the
body building to more wider audience as well as youngsters and body builders
around Thailand and internationally. The appointment also gives me an
advantage; as it helps me continue develop capabilities of Thai body
builders, for association and international body building competitions.
“This year, the Thailand Body Building Association has
been selected for the first time by the Asian Body Building Federation to
host the regional body building competition. We expect more than 200 body
builders from over 39 countries around the Asian region to participate,”
he added.

Young Malaysian to realise childhood dream with Formula BMW Asia
After a triumphant start to the season at the Bahrain
Formula One Grand Prix, Formula BMW Asia heads to Sepang International
Circuit on June 18 and 19 for rounds three and four of the 14-round series,
part of the Japan GT Championship Malaysian event.
So spectacular was the racing in the opening rounds that
it brought the F1 spectators to their feet, and the action is set to be no
less thrilling as the season continues.
Drivers from 11 nations across Asia, representing the
cream of the region’s young racing talent, will do battle on Sepang’s
5.6km track in two 10 lap races.
H.Nattapong,
a Thai Formula BMW driver leads the pack at in the early rounds of the
Formula BMW Asia series.
Flying the flag for Malaysia will be 18-year-old Nik
Iruwan. Awarded one of the five coveted Formula BMW scholarships, Iruwan is
looking forward to his first appearance at the Sepang Circuit. “It has
been my dream since childhood to race on a big circuit in my own country in
front of the local fans. For every racing driver, racing on their home
circuit is definitely special,” he said.
With his previous experience confined to karts, single
seater racing is completely new to the young Malaysian Formula BMW Junior,
but he is determined to take full advantage of the training provided by BMW
under the scholarship. “I’ve achieved a lot of success for Malaysia in
karting and now I am taking a big step forward,” he said. “It is a major
opportunity for me to prove to Malaysia and BMW that I can do well in the
future.”
Iruwan admits that he is slightly daunted by the prospect
of racing in front of his home crowd, but adamant it won’t affect his
performance. “I won’t let the pressure take control of me. There is no
use pushing myself beyond my capabilities at the moment. I will concentrate
on my work and try to learn as much as I can, which is important in my first
year of single seater racing. The support of the Malaysian fans will be a
boost for me to produce good results for my country,” he said.
Iruwan’s Meritus teammate, Marchy Lee of Hong Kong,
tops the Driver Championship leaderboard going in to the next rounds, having
clinched victory in both races in Bahrain.
“I’m very confident I can win the next two races,”
said Lee, who admits he has more racing experience than the other
competitors. “It’s not going to be easy. The drivers who competed last
year will benefit from their knowledge of the track, but I’ve only raced
there once before.”
Lee can certainly expect some fierce competition in
Malaysia, particularly from the likes of You Kyong-Ouk of Korea. The
23-year-old BMW Korea E-Rain Racing driver won the Formula BMW Asia Rookie
Cup last year and is on top form this season having finished 2nd and 3rd
respectively in Bahrain.
Joining Lee at Team Meritus is the sole entry from
Morocco, Mehdi Bennani, who acquitted himself well in the opening rounds
finishing 5th in both races, and the second Malaysian entry, TJ Chin.
Newly-formed this year, Minardi Team Asia is already
making a name for itself in the series. Its two Filipino drivers Tyson Sy
and Dado Pena, both 16, competed last year, and are looking strong this
season. Sy put in a brilliant performance in round two to finish second.
Minardi Team Asia is also fielding Robert Boughey of
Thailand, another Formula BMW Junior driver.
Hanss Lin of Chinese Taipei, runner up in the
championship last year, is likely to be on the pace and his hard-charging
style should see him at the front of the field. This year Lin is driving for
another new team, Belgravia Motorsport, which is also fielding three drivers
from Bahrain; Hamed Al Fardan, Sheikk Salman Bin Rashid Al Khalifa, and
Mohammed Al Baharna.
Said Lee, “Tyson and Hanss will be my biggest threats,
especially Tyson who has improved a lot since last year.”
However Lee is also keeping a close eye on another
newcomer, 21-year-old Han Han of China, another of the five Formula BMW
Junior drivers, racing with Team E-Rain. “Han Han will be one to watch
this year. Given this is his first season in single seater racing and he has
to adapt from a rally car, his progress is very good,” he said.
The only lady driver in the field this year is Gaby Dela
Merced of the Philippines. The 21-year-old is competing with Team T.E.C.
PILIPINAS and is making the transition from saloon car racing to single
seaters this year as a Formula BMW Junior driver.
The two Autosport with Arto team drivers this season are
series newcomer Maekkasit Weraporasu of Thailand, and Japanese racer Tohru
Jitsukawa competing in his second Formula BMW Asia season.
The ultra-modern Formula BMW, which allows 15-year-olds
to enter the world of motor racing, has been lining up on the grid since the
2002 season. It sets standards above all on the safety technology front. The
single-seater, driven by a 140 bhp BMW motorcycle engine that takes it up to
230 km/h, features a carbon-fibre chassis, fulfils the safety requirements
of the much higher-performance Formula 3 cars, and even matches certain
Formula One standards.
In 2004, Formula BMW will be staged in four different
series held in Germany, the UK, Asia and the USA. Formula BMW events will be
part of the Formula One support programme on five occasions around the
world. All the series go hand-in-hand with a comprehensive education and
coaching programme, as well as substantial financial backing for promising
young talent. The most distinguished graduate of this “talent hothouse”
is Ralf Schumacher. The star of the BMW WilliamsF1 Team made his racing
debut in the junior class in 1992.
BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen: “Our junior
talent promotion scheme is an intensive basic education for successful kart
drivers who want to move up into Formula racing. Our priorities are to
create a level playing field through technically identical vehicles and
scrupulously defined regulations, and to ensure maximum safety.”
Formula BMW Asia, now in its second season, runs as part
of the Asian Festival of Speed (AFOS) organised by Motorsport Asia Limited.
This year the series is run over 14 rounds at seven venues in Bahrain,
Malaysia, Korea, China, Japan with rounds 5 and 6 being held at Bira
circuit, in Thailand on July 11.
Races will culminate in a second Formula One Grand Prix support race at
the Shanghai circuit in September.
