Intimate audience treated to Follywood in Jomtien
Sunday night in Jomtien was a very special occasion this
past week when a “musical journey” was presented, to quote producer and
pianist, Ben Hansen, featuring cabaret entertainer Timothy Bergen, coming
all the way from Hollywood California. Ben Hansen has produced many musical
events in the past and this show was a well-orchestrated collaboration
between the two men.
Ben
Hansen and Timothy Bergen presented a “musical journey” last week in
Jomtien.
Among the routines were musical impressions of Maurice Chevalier, Hermina
Gingould, Al Jolson, W.C. Fields, Louis Armstrong, Victor Borge and Ed Wynn.
The highlight of the evening was when Bergen brought out his hand made
Cabaret puppets, Lana LaMoore (Hollywood’s oldest star) and Chikita (the
Latin bombshell). The jaunty show ended with a musical tribute to Timothy’s
mother, who was an actress and model in Hollywood.
Timothy Bergen began performing at the age of seven in Lionel Bart’s Oliver,
and has been performing in musicals, cabaret and vaudeville shows ever
since. His last long run was in the Palm Springs Follies where he played to
230,000 people in 10 months.
Tim has written and produced 10 original musicals as well as designing
costumes and sets for numerous other productions. His future plans are to
take the show on the water for the cruise lines.

PILC enjoys coffee
at the Balcony Restaurant
Gillian Thom (centre) thanked
departing members Bronwyn Carey (left) and Sharon Tibbitts (right) for all their
support, and presented them with a departure gift of engraved champagne flutes.

Pattaya International Ladies Club members had their monthly coffee morning
at Balcony Restaurant recently. Although the summer months are normally a little
quieter, almost 50 members gathered for the chance to catch up with each other
and exchange their news.
It was a somewhat sad occasion, as two important members of PILC are leaving
Thailand to return to their home countries. Bronwyn Carey, former chairperson of
the Welfare Committee, founder of the Helping Hands programme for victims of the
Asian tsunami, and active contributor to the North Star Library here in Pattaya,
is returning with her husband Simon to Melbourne, and Sharon Tibbitts, former
(two year) president of the PILC, and her husband Peter, have finished their
second tour of duty and will be returning to the US shortly.
Gillian thanked both members for all their support, and presented them with a
departure gift of engraved champagne flutes. Both ladies promised to keep in
touch and visit again whenever possible!
Gillian also thanked the staff at Balcony for their delicious spread of
savouries and cakes, and included the hospitality team of Kavita Singh and
Stephanie Moorhouse for their tireless work in sourcing the venues and arranging
such pleasant occasions for our luncheons and coffee mornings each month.
PILC members get together twice a month for coffee and lunch, and as well as
these social activities, we support a wide range of welfare projects in the
area. There is also an extensive range of sports and social clubs within the
group, including mah-jong, bowling, tennis, and crafts. Anyone wanting to join
the group, or who would like more information about its various activities,
should telephone Gillian Thom, President, on 01 7626003 or e-mail to
[email protected].
Author Jake Needham
to speak at PCEC
The speaker on Sunday August 6 at the Pattaya City Expats
Club will be the author Jake Needham. He will be speaking, no doubt among other
things, about his latest book The Ambassador’s Wife.
Author
Jake Needham will be the guest speaker at the Pattaya City Expats Club meeting
on August 6.
Jake was last at the PCEC just over a year ago. He is the author of 4 books and
twelve screenplays and though his books are published in Hong Kong and
distributed only in Asia, more than 65,000 copies are in print in four
languages.
Jake and his wife have lived in Thailand since 1991. His latest book, The
Ambassador’s Wife has just been published and makes its initial appearance in an
English export edition, a hardback-sized edition with heavy paper covers.
Although rarely seen in North America, the English export edition has become the
standard format for popular fiction when it is first released in the
Asia-Pacific region. The paper covers considerably reduce the shipping costs for
new books and therefore their retail price can be kept to a level that is
affordable for more readers.
The Ambassador’s Wife marks something of a new direction for Jake, dealing as it
does with a series of brutal murders rather than with the more cerebral
financial crimes he has written about in the past. It also introduces a new
character, Inspector Samuel Tay of Singapore CID. Jake hopes readers will like
Sam Tay as much as he does and that he will be able to keep him around for a
while.
Jake says that the vagaries of the book distribution business and the effects of
local political sensitivities in Asia are such that it is difficult to say
exactly when The Ambassador’s Wife will be available in each of the countries in
which his novels are distributed. It is widely available now in some of those
countries and soon will be in others. In a few, it may never be available at
all.
In addition to The Ambassador’s Wife, two other new editions of his books are
now available in Asian bookstores in February: Prime Crime Press released
mass-market paperback editions of both Laundry Man and Killing Plato. They join
The Big Mango, which was already available in that format, and for the first
time all of his older novels are available in mass-market paperback editions.
Jake will be coming from an event at the Oriental Bangkok, which is one of a
short series of appearances by writers in the Author’s Lounge that they have
organized in honor of the hotel’s 130th anniversary. Skip Boyce is something of
a fan of Jake’s books and he has very kindly volunteered to show up on the night
and give him an “adoring introduction.” As Jake says, “It can’t hurt having the
American ambassador plug my books!”
The meeting starts as usual at 10.30 a.m., buffet breakfast available from 9.30
at Henry J. Bean’s in the grounds of the Amari Orchid Resort. Meetings are open
to everyone and are a wonderful way to learn more about living legally in
Thailand and becoming integrated into the expat community here in Pattaya. For
further information about this and other Sunday and week-day events go to
www.pattaycityexpatsclub.com.
