Sun & Fun Fly-in takes off in great style
A chance to win a trophies
from His Majesty the King provided the impetus for great performances.

The first Sun & Fun Fly-in aeronautical show took off in fine style
on November 10, opened by Sakthip Krairuk, permanent under-secretary for
the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, and Group Captain Veerayuth
Didyasarin, president of the Foundation for Preservation and Development
of Thai Aircraft.

Krairuk, permanent under-secretary for the Ministry of Tourism and
Sports, co-presides over the opening ceremony.
Sun & Fun Fly-in 2006 was competing for His Majesty the King’s Trophy,
and was staged at Pattaya Airpark in Huay Yai.
Before the opening ceremony a fleet of 200 Harley-Davidsons and other
classic motorcycles set out from Pattaya City Hall and circled Pattaya
before driving to the competition airfield.
This event, staged jointly by the Aeronautic Sports Association of
Thailand, the Foundation for Preservation and Development of Thai
Aircraft under His Majesty the King’s patronage, and Pattaya Airpark,
was held over the period November 10 to 12.
There were several aircraft exhibitions. On display was “Miss Siam”, the
first private Thai airplane, purchased on June 22, 1932, by Group
Captain Luan Pongsopon with his private money and used for enhancing the
relationship between Thailand and China. Group Captain Veerayuth piloted
the aircraft during Sun & Fun Fly-in.
Group
Captain Veerayuth Didyasarin, president of the Foundation for
Preservation and Development of Thai Aircraft, gives a stirring speech.
There was also a best Thai aviator competition, an air acrobat show, an
attempt to break the world record for flying the most para-motor
vehicles, and large-scale jet and radio-controlled aircraft
demonstrations by recognized champions.
Lt Winai Sricharoenpol of the Royal Thai Air Force, who has over 8,600
jumps to his credit, made an attempt on the world skydiving record by
jumping while carrying the world’s largest flag. A Thai national flag,
it measured 105ft x 95ft and weighed 60 kg. However, Lt Winai’s main
parachute did not open, so he had to use his emergency chute. He lost
control and came down in a eucalyptus forest, happily escaping his
ordeal uninjured.
Lt Winai made a second attempt, and succeeded in jumping at a reduced
height of 5,000ft. This time he was carrying His Majesty the King’s
yellow symbolic flag, measuring 6ft x 15ft. He received tumultuous
applause from the spectators around the airfield.
The flying competition results saw Samarn Promnaree with the highest
total aviation points, for which he received the King’s Trophy. The
runners up in order were Surin Kiewwan (best individual performance),
Kim Younmin and Woo Taeha. Air Chief Marshal Prapat Weenakhup was Her
Royal Highness Princess Siribhachudhabhorn’s representative to
distribute the trophies to all the winners.
An accident happened after the trophy distribution ceremony when a
para-motor vehicle came down on the soi behind the Welcome Jomtien
Hotel. Trinet Pongsaen, 40, said that seven pilots with the Surin Flying
Club had flown from the airfield to enjoy an aerial view of Pattaya
before heading back to their hometown. There was a strong shift in the
wind direction, and pilot Chatchai Noiwong, 32, lost control and came
down too quickly. He sustained a broken right arm and right leg, and the
aircraft suffered damage to its propeller. Officers from Sawang Boriboon
Foundation provided first aid and transferred him to the hospital for
further treatment.

Final pub night raises over 26,000 baht for charity
On Saturday 11th November the Charity Club of Pattaya
held the finale of their recent pub nights at the Queen Victoria Inn Soi
6.
Malcolm
and Christina present Vic King of the Queen Victoria Inn a certificate
of appreciation for being a Platinum Sponsor at the Charity Gala Dinner
held in September.
The Charity Club started the pub nights in July to raise funds to build
a classroom in Klaeng, which has been achieved and handed over.
The Charity Club was pleased with the turnout, being as so many events
were happening in Pattaya that night.
Kevin Fisher attended, making everyone feel very under dressed as he
arrived in full dinner suit after attending a previous engagement!
Later in the evening customers and staff helped draw the tickets for the
many prizes that were donated by Tata Young Enterprises, Queen’s
Restaurant and Bar, Globetrotter Restaurant and Bar, Ebon, The Munch
Shack, cartoons by Mike Baird, BUPA Thailand, the Mini Golf Pub and Best
of British.
Malcolm
and Christina present Som Fisher, on behalf of Kevin Fisher, Cranes and
Equipment Asia, a certificate of appreciation for being a Platinum
Sponsor at the Charity Gala Dinner held in September.
Vic and Jane King, owners of the Queen Vic, kindly sponsored various
drinks, which everyone supported!
The money raised will be used for the Christmas gifts for the children’s
Christmas party which will be held at Jameson’s the Irish pub on
December 9th at 11.00 am.
The total amount raised was 26,990 baht.
As the evening progressed Malcolm and Christina took the opportunity to
present Vic King of the Queen Victoria Inn and Som Fisher on behalf of
Kevin Fisher, Cranes and Equipment Asia a certificate of appreciation
for being a Platinum Sponsor at the Charity Gala Dinner held in
September.
Many
prizes were donated by Tata Young Enterprises, Queen’s Restaurant and
Bar, Globetrotter Restaurant and Bar, Ebon, The Munch Shack, cartoons by
Mike Baird, BUPA Thailand, the Mini Golf Pub and Best of British.
The Charity Club of Pattaya would like to extend its thanks to everyone
who has helped with the pub nights: Jameson’s the Irish Pub,
Witherspoon’s Bar & Restaurant, Kilkenny’s and the Queen Victoria Inn;
our sponsors from the various raffles: Tata Young Enterprises, Queen’s
Restaurant and Bar, Globetrotter Restaurant and Bar, Ebon, The Munch
Shack, cartoons by Mike Baird, BUPA Thailand, the Mini Golf Pub and Best
of British, Kilkenny’s, Googie’s Restaurant, Bungy Jump, Shenanigans,
Queen Victoria Inn, Jameson’s Carvery, the Kitten Club, Quad Bike Hire,
Blues Factory, Scandinavia Bar, Simple Simon, the Hard Rock Hotel, and
to the Pattaya Mail for their coverage of the pub nights.
Private donations came from an anonymous gentleman, Tony Shuttleworth,
Stuart Daly of Pattaya Reality and Duane Pebworth of Gesswein Siam Co.
Ltd. Bangkok; and a special thank you to Vic and Jane helping make the
final evening another successful event.

Aussie Chamber cleans up Northshore
(l-r) Gary Woollacott,
Paul Whyte, Dr. Iain Corness and Steele Lambrinos enjoy the evening.
Dr. Iain Corness
Last week’s AustCham Seaboard Sundowners was another of the friendly
events for which the Australian Chamber has become very well known. That
was not the only reason for the good turn-out, as the event was held on
the 29th floor of the Northshore building, in the (reputedly) 99 million
baht penthouse, and the catering was done by the Amari Orchid Resort and
their Mantra restaurant. A combination that was more than somewhat
attractive.
Nigel
Cornick (right) meets and greets Steele Lambrinos, thanking him for his
kind sponsorship.
The ladies that come to the AustCham Sundowners are also very
attractive, as well as being hard at it networking. Amongst the business
card bestowers were Sareeya Sirichantrawong from Baker Tilley Thailand’s
executive search and Sotirach Chanthong from Kirwan Industrial Services.
Other ladies with a mission included Monika Rottmann and Reina Rances
from the Bangkok Hospital Pattaya’s International Marketing Department,
with information on the hospital’s new luxurious wing which has just
come on line.
Raimon Land, the developers of Northshore and the new Northpoint at
Naklua were there in force with CEO Nigel Cornick expressing his group’s
confidence in Pattaya’s high end market. And at 29 floors up, it
certainly was high end!
Mention must be made again of Amari’s catering service and the superb
food, with the Amari’s executive assistant manager Martin Kroeni
overseeing the many live cooking stations. The BBQ around the pool,
catered for by Bourbon Street was also very popular, the Aussies being
well known for their ability at throwing another prawn on the barbie!
Stuart
Saunders (centre) and Peter Cummins (right) enjoying their drink and
Aussie banter.
Martin Kyle, the executive director of AustCham was another overseeing
the event, and considering that he is six foot seventeen tall, this is
easy for him. Meanwhile, down at ground level, AustCham’s president,
Gary Woollacott was seen mingling and making sure everyone did enjoy
themselves, even laughing at Paul Whyte’s (Tinfish) jokes, which can be
difficult (sorry Paul).
Other regulars at these events, even though frightfully English, were
the AA Insurance Brokers team of Peter Smith and Malcolm Scorer,
assuring everyone that they could be covered if they did jump from the
29th floor penthouse. What was not said was that the cover would be an
ex-army blanket while waiting for the Sawang Boriboon body snatchers.
The major sponsor of the evening was Kirwan Industrial Services (again),
with its mercurial boss Steele Lambrinos giving a brief run-down on the
many and varied services that can be covered by Kirwan. This is an
Australian company that has done very well in Asia, and not just
Thailand, with Steele himself returning after three years in China. I
noticed in their brochure, one of the many automotive companies
associated with Kirwan was “Jaguak”, which I presume must be a Chinese
manufacturer of luxury automobiles! Steele also said that Kirwan would
sponsor November 2007’s Seaboard Sundowners, so the cleaning crew can
get ready again, after cleaning up this year’s Northshore bash.
The next Seaboard Sundowners will be publicized as usual in the Pattaya
Mail.
The Kirwan team together
with attractive ladies working hard at networking.
Food and drink was aplenty
for all to enjoy.
Sponsors are the “Stars” of the PILC Gala Night Ball
Sold Out! All tickets for the Pattaya International
Ladies Club Charity Gala Ball on Saturday 25th November are sold. This
is very good news indeed! This will be the biggest Gala Ball ever, and
PILC hope that it will be an enjoyable social occasion for all, as well
as raising the much needed money to continue the welfare projects. All
long hours worked by Rosanne Diamente, special events chairperson and
her team of PILC volunteers have been worthwhile.
Gillian
Thom, PILC President.
But, there are other members who help raise the money PILC needs, but in
difference ways. One such member is Ursula Rothstein.
Ursula came to Pattaya 12 years ago, with her husband George, and has
been associated with PILC for many years. She is now a very familiar
face in Pattaya, and best known for her wonderful shop in Third Road,
Ursula’s Antiques. Ursula has been in the Antique’s business for many
years, previously as a partner with Kalae, and then opening a separate
business in Third Road. In February 2006, she moved to her new showroom
in Third Road where she specializes in fine Chinese Antiques and objet
d’art.
But maybe unknown to many, Ursula is committed to helping others less
fortunate. Since 2000, she has sponsored the PILC Ball by way of
donating a piece of antique furniture. This item has always been one of
the “stars” of the auction, which takes place during the evening of the
Ball. Last year, her donated piece raised 110,000 baht!
When asked why she has supported the work of the PILC for so many years,
she replied, “Because I like to help people in need, but with my
business I have little time. I can help by donating items that raise
money for charity. The PILC is a great group of women who do so many
things to help the poor of Pattaya.”
Rosanne
Diamente, PILC special events chairperson
Ursula’s commitment to help others does not stop with PILC. In the past
she has also donated other items to the Jesters Care for Kids and the
PGF to help with their fundraising activities.
This year Ursula has donated an exquisite 19th century Chinese Cabinet
from the Whenzou region of China. It is made of fir wood and has been
beautifully restored and painted. The auction is one of the highlights
of the evening and is eagerly looked forward to. The antique Chinese
cabinet will be one of the star auction items, and Ursula is definitely
a star PILC member.
Another long-standing member who supports the Gala Ball is Arlette
Cykman. For many years Arlette has donated jewelry or a piece of art.
These too have been auctioned and have raised many thousands of baht for
PILC welfare projects. Again, this year Arlette’s Treasures has donated
jewelry, a beautiful broach and earrings set; another “star” auction
item. This branch design set is made of 18-karat gold set with diamonds,
two Lapis Lazuli lovebirds adorning the broach.
So PILC say a big Thank-You to two very special members for their
continuing support of the PILC Welfare Committee work.
PILC appreciate and thank all who help to support their welfare projects
in so many different ways.
If you are interested in any of the PILC social activities, welfare work
or sponsorship opportunities, please contact President Gillian Thom on
081-7626003 or pilc262 @yahoo.com The club now has over 170 members,
from over 30 different countries. Hence, the theme of the 2006 Gala Ball
“Around the World”, which so rightly reflects the multi-national nature
of the Club itself.
Ursula Antiques is situated on Third Road, next to Pattaya Driving
Range, (3/140-141 M.6, Third Road. Telephone 01 833 8224)

Singha Taste of Thailand Challenge 2006
Sun Dec 3 – Hard Rock Café, Pattaya, 8pm – 12am
MTV Darlings Futon will be
part of the fun at the Hard Rock Café on December 3.
Can Farang
ever be Thai?
Thailand’s funniest cross-cultural game show, the Singha Taste of
Thailand Challenge hits the road again this November and December in
pursuit of the answer to the question: Can farang (that’s westerner’s
folk) ever truly behave like Thais? Whether they can or not, the efforts
are hilarious as tourists and travellers and the occasional foolhardy
expat compete against each other to win the hearts and minds of the
Thais in the audience and great travel-related incentives, by making
fools of themselves.
This funky, in-your-face live road show arrives in Pattayaland on Sunday
3 December with one night of fun at Hard Rock Café with live music from
MTV Darlings Futon and the tightest blues combo in Thailand, Cannonball.
This well-choreographed night’s entertainment is like an alternative to
the pub - down the pub.
“We’ve got a great show this year,” said the event’s emcee Worathep na
Banglampu. “We had such fun on last year’s event and got a huge response
from mates around the region who saw us on the telly that we’ve decided
to tighten things up a little bit. We will be holding regional heats (no
pun intended - the weather will be lovely) in Chiang Mai (Nov 24), Pai
(Nov 26), Samui (Nov 30), and Pattaya (Dec 3) with the winners from each
heat going on to the Grand Final in Bangkok (Dec 7). The national winner
of the Singha Taste of Thailand Challenge 2006 in Bangkok will be
crowned farang sud yord (ask a Thai) and win some fantastic prizes,” he
added.
Fame or shame?
The entire nationwide tour will be filmed and broadcast internationally
on Star World TV, UBC and cable channels nationwide. In addition the
event is supported in print by Bangkok Post, Untamed Travel Magazine and
locally by Pattaya Mail and Pattaya Mail on TV.
If you will be around Pattaya in early December, fancy bagging some
great prizes and feel fated for that ‘fifteen minutes of fame’, simply
answer the following questions about the Land of Smiles and you could be
a lucky winner.
Anyway, that’s all the info. The rest, as they say in Thailand, is up to
you.
