No official invites for foreign runners at Pattaya Marathon

Costs need to be saved says AAT

Ariyawat Nuamsawat
The Athletic Association of Thailand has decided not to formally invite foreign long distance runners to join the Pattaya Marathon this year, saying that costs need to be reduced.

International stars like 2004 Pattaya Marathon winner John Kelar from Kenya could be notable absentees from this year’s race after the organizing committee decided not to send out official invites.

Instead, extra funds will be added to the prize money, bringing the top prize to 200,000 baht, in an effort to attract more participants.
The event takes place on July 15, the starting and finish line having now been moved to Pattaya Beach Road Soi 4.
The full Marathon route is 42.195 km, the Half Marathon route is 21.10 km, and the Quarter Marathon 10.55 km. Runners will start at 4 a.m. and proceed from Beach Road to Sukhumvit Road, and then to Jomtien Beach, returning via Walking Street to Pattaya Beach Road.
A meeting of the organizing committee was held at Pattaya City Hall on May 29, at which Pol Maj Gen Surapong Ariyamongkol, vice president and secretary general of the Athletic Association of Thailand revealed that this year foreign runners would not be invited on an official basis.
If they are interested in taking part they must apply individually and meet their own costs, because every official invitation carries a large expense and the income from the event is not enough for this, said Pol Maj Gen Surapong.
Deputy Mayor Wattana Chantanawaranon said that in the past cooperation for organizing and supporting the event was not in general forthcoming from the hotel businesses, and runners had problems with the cost of accommodation. This is one reason the number of runners is not high compared to similar events such as the Bangkok Marathon and the Phuket Marathon.
“Nevertheless, the committee members for this year’s competition have increased the prize money in several categories,” said Wattana. “The Marathon international male category, for example, has been increased from 150,000 baht to 200,000 baht.”
The King’s Trophy, which carries His Majesty’s insignia, is expected to attract between 4,000 and 5,000 runners from throughout the country. This includes Thai national runners who are preparing for the SEA Games competition, which will be hosted by Thailand at the end of this year.
The winner of the Marathon international male category will receive 200,000 baht, and the female winner will receive 150,000 baht. The male and female Thai winners will receive 70,000 baht. The male winners in the all-ages category will receive 8,000 baht, while the female winner will receive 10,000 baht.
In the male and female Thai competitor Half Marathon category, the winner will receive 40,000 baht. In the Quarter Marathon category the male and female winners will receive 6,000 baht each. Apart from this, there is also cash money and special bonuses amounting to more than 100,000 baht for competitors who break the Pattaya and Thailand Marathon records.
The current Pattaya Marathon male record was made in 2000 by a Japanese runner and stands at 2:26:06. The female record dates from 2003 and was set by an Indonesian runner, standing at 2:51:49. The current Thailand Marathon male record is from 1998 and is held by a Korean runner at 2:12:32. The Thailand Marathon female record is also from 1998 and is held by a Japanese runner at 2:21:41.

Takeshi & Ebrahim take weekly spoils

PSC golf from The Café Kronborg

Monday, May 28,
Crystal Bay, Stableford
Crystal Bay was host for a Stableford competition under very hot conditions, with a light breeze.
Takeshi Hakozaki came in first with 37 points, Dave Richardson was second with 35 points on a count back over Gene Rooney in third, with the ever-present Ebrahim in fourth on count back over Marty Allred, both with 34 points.
Thursday, May 31,
Plutaluang, Stableford
Yes, I know we are playing this course a lot of late, but this was a holiday and Dave was in his normal good booking form. Mind having played well here last time I thought I would take the chance to see if it was a fluke, and of course it was.

Ebrahim was the winner at Plutaluang on Thursday.

For a holiday the course was lightly used, and we played the two nines we wanted, S & E, which I think are the best.
The course was quite ok, a bit barren in places with the odd hole in poor condition, but we got around in quick order, and as I played with a member I was able to chat about the course on the way around. He obviously thinks it a good place to play, as he lives near it and he plays it regularly.
The winner with 38 points was Ebrahim with Brian Wilkinson in second with 37 points and in a count back for third on 36 points Bob Pearce came out ahead of ‘The Admiral’ in fourth. T.T.F.N.

Thursday, May 31, Greenwood
A & B - White Tees, Stableford

1st Les Burns (35) 50pts
2nd Brian Blackford (20) 39pts
3rd Dick Warburg (16) 37pts
Who is going to call the Guinness Book of Records? Les Burns recorded an amazing 50 points (29 on the front nine and 21 on the back) to annihilate the field at Greenwood (formerly Noble Place) on Thursday. This was the first time that Les has broken 100 gross and the first time he has ever had a birdie, (unfortunately he had not entered the sweep).
Les, a very unassuming player, has come on leaps and bounds over the past twelve months and he really deserved this latest success - Well done Les!
Tuesday, May 29,
Bangpra, Stableford

1st Frank Kelly (17) 42pts
2nd Derek Eastham (13) 38pts
3rd Tewin Lamthong (23) 37pts
Near Pins: Amphan North, Frank Kelly, Tewin Lamthong
2’s: None
A great day at a super course saw ‘Mr. Steady’ Frank Kelly come to the fore to see off the other fourteen combatants on the day and win with a 42 point haul, four in front of second placed Derek Eastham.
Reminder: If anyone is interested in golfing with the Bowling Green we play every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. We meet at Bowling Green at 7:45 am and new players are always made to feel welcome. On the course at Eastern Star on June 29th

Mike Franklin
Golf tournaments are by definition competitive, but must be fun as well. That is certainly our intention at the inaugural PATTAYA MAIL ‘Mike Franklin’ Classic where every hole will be sponsored and a beautiful Lotus Crystal trophy to be won. However, some holes will feature additional incentives and attractions.
At the Par 4 First, Horseshoe Point hospitality will set you up for that blind tee shot over the hill and the chance to win the trophy by being nearest the pin with your second.
Jan Sabai, from ‘The Lakes at Phoenix,’ has introduced an additional challenge on the Par 3 Third hole that will be of interest to the short hitters and the chance to win a bottle of rather good ‘Fizz’. At the Par 3 Sixth hole, Music Travel Thailand will ‘enhance’ the scenery at the Tee box, and Trident Tricar will display a white Trident T-Pod vehicle that could be yours for a Hole-in-One.
There will of course be Long Putts, Long Drives, Near Pins and Straight Drives throughout, but at the short Par 4 Twelfth the Casa Pascal Restaurant will be promoting soothing Champagne at the tee in readiness for a well judged tee shot to the strategically placed Champagne bucket in the Fairway, with the objective of being the closest. Nearest the Pin is up for grabs on that hole too.
At the Robert Trent Jones Jnr. Signature hole, the Par 3 Thirteenth, Pinnacle Grand Jomtien Resort and Spa are offering Return flights and a 3 week holiday for Two at Pinnacle Samui Resort & Spa for a Hole-in-One. A Near Pin trophy is on offer too.
Other Pinnacle holiday prizes will feature in the Charity Draw at Pinnacle Grand Jomtien Resort in the evening. Finally, a chance for a beer with Singha at the Par 3 Seventeenth Charity Hole, and to win a case by getting in the 4 meter diameter Singha Circle. Failing that, just get nearest the Pin for the Lotus crystal trophy.
Our Hole Sponsors are featured in this weeks’ tournament ad on page 24, together with all the sponsors and donors so far, who are generously supporting Pattaya Mail’s inaugural Charity golf tournament. More at www.pattayamailgolfclassic.com or contact [email protected]

The Diplomatic Trophy
The PATTAYA MAIL Mike Franklin Classic Charity Golf tournament is pleased to welcome a Diplomatic team from the British Embassy and, in view of this, a special ‘DIPLOMATIC TROPHY’ is being considered and other Embassies are being invited to join. Recognizing the diverse nationalities of golfers on the Eastern Seaboard and in Bangkok we would especially welcome Diplomatic teams representing the Embassies of the United States of America, Australia, Canada, Germany, New Zealand, Sweden, Switzerland, and Thailand to compete against the British Embassy, and each other. The Diplomatic Trophy will be awarded within the overall prize structure of the tournament.

Where is Khun Jirapol now?

The players from the Jomtien Golf society enjoy their day out at the Black Mountain Golf Club in Hua Hin.

Mike Franklin
Some tournament organizers, who enjoyed the attention to detail and service freely given by Jirapol Keamajaree when he was the Marketing and Operations manager at Eastern Star, may wonder where he has gone and what he is doing. Well, I am pleased to report that he is well and as active as ever, this time under the shadow of Black Mountain. That is, the Black Mountain Golf Club at Hua Hin.
Only fourteen months old, the course has gained a reputation for the quality of the fairways, greens and tees that have a beautiful carpet of healthy grass, a condition unusual for such a new course.
There was a dramatic start to May, when torrential rain closed the course for 5 days due to a measured fall of 17 inches, amounting to about half the annual rainfall in the area. It was a good test for the conditioning of the course and, apart from some damage to bunkers; it survived the test and was back to normal in record time.
Not yet having visited the course personally, I have noted the favorable comments of those who have. Most recent was the ‘Golden Elephant’ one-week tour to Hua Hin by Jomtien Golf. A group of 12 golfers playing four courses - Palm Hills, Lake View, Majestic Creek, and Black Mountain that was a last minute schedule switch from Springfield. What a good decision that was, as the players all rated Black Mountain as a ‘fantastic course in a beautiful setting’. Plus, finding Khun Jirapol there as the Manager, adding his personal touch to the golf and Clubhouse facilities, alongside Kenny Walker, Director of Golf.
So, we found Khun Jirapol and if you want to find out more about Black Mountain go to www.bmghuahin.com. However, he will be back at Eastern Star for a day when he joins me on June 29 at the Pattaya Mail ‘Mike Franklin’ Classic to assist in the day’s proceedings.

The Beautiful Game?: Riz Taylor

Premiership: “have Big money”

Now then, people of Pattaya – I hope you’re sitting down as you read this because some of the stories we’ll be revealing in the next few weeks will shock many of you. After all, living in the quiet fishing village of Pattaya means that you’re unfamiliar with such practices as gossip, shady deals, the making up of laws to satisfy a few unelected officials and of course corruption, but then we can’t continue to ignore the harsh realities of the football world, can we?
The Premiership will throw open its arms and welcome back Derby County next season after the Rams managed to find their way past West Bromwich Albion in the playoff final at the new Wembley last week. The reward? 60 million pounds, if you believe everything you read.
Derby, who bucked the trend by finishing third and then securing promotion the hard way, will rightly look forward to an increase in financial muscle next year, but whilst a lack of funds shouldn’t prove to be a stumbling block in the near future, a shortage of clubs willing to part with decent playing staff might be the nail in County’s coffin.
It’s all very well for fans of a newly-promoted side to start salivating over the spondoolies that will come flooding into Pride Park, but let’s not forget that every other club in the division will also be better off as well. Expect some ridiculous figures exchanging hands for some ridiculously average players this summer.
Yet just when all seems lost as the Big Four continue to ride off into the sunset toward their Champions League-funded footballing paradise, along comes news that the future may not be quite so bright for Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool.
We’re getting too used to seeing these four contest their own mini-league at the top of the Premiership season after endless season, but things might be about to change according to business analysts.
Figures show that the 2.7 billion pounds that Premiership clubs will share from broadcast income over the next three years - up nearly 50% on the previous deal – will increase yet further in the future and give Premiership clubs increased buying power over their rival European leagues. During last season the Premiership generated 1.4 billion pounds, against Serie A’s 1 billion and the third-placed Bundesliga’s 0.8 billion.
That gives other clubs their chance to break the monopoly at the top of the division, according to Dan Jones, author of the Deloitte Review of Football Finance. “Everton, Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa and Newcastle United are trying very, very hard to compete in the top four,” he said. “When you look forward a few years and ask yourself where the growth in the Premiership is going to come from, it’s the overseas television rights. They are divided equally between the clubs and that will help level the playing field. I am not as doom-laden about this being the new order, with the top four there forever. Football, in all its guises, has a habit of surprising you.”
Surprises in football? I’ll drink to that.
International Thriller
That’s not a headline you’ll read too often in these pages, but my faith in international football is at an all-time high. Hoping for a little more entertainment than Steve McClown’s England have served up in recent matches, I took time to watch Denmark and Sweden’s European Championship qualifier last weekend. What a choice it turned out to be.
Sweden raced into a seemingly unassailable three-goal lead, only for the plucky Danes to claw their way back into it after overcoming their shaky opening half hour. With minutes to go and the score at 3-3, Denmark midfielder Christian Poulsen was sent off for punching one of the Swedes in the stomach, and before the resulting penalty could be taken a Danish fan invaded the pitch and clobbered the referee. The game was then abandoned.
Now I’m not condoning violence or anything, but that game had everything. Except a result, perhaps.
Calm down,
calm down

Staying with the theme of bad behaviour, Liverpool and their supporters are up in arms after William Gaillard, UEFA’s director of communications, branded the club’s followers the worst behaved in Europe earlier this week. The allegations keep coming thick and fast for Liverpool after chaos during the Champions League final in Athens saw a large number of ticketless fans attempt to enter the stadium by force.
“The incidents involving Liverpool fans have been well known to us before the trouble at the Champions League final,” said Gaillard. “This was just the latest example. What other set of fans steal tickets from their fellow supporters or out of the hands of children? We know who caused most of the trouble in Athens,” he continued. “There have been 25 incidents involving Liverpool fans away from home since 2003 and those are in the report - most teams’ supporters do not cause any trouble at all.”
Stern stuff. But Liverpool, who sent a report to UEFA five days before the final detailing security concerns, indicated that their warnings had gone unheeded. A club spokesman said: “The shortcomings in the management of the situation in Athens were apparent to anyone who was there and this latest statement from UEFA should not deflect attention from that reality.”
FIFA bans
the High Life

It’s bad news for my army of Bolivian readers this week, after FIFA announced plans to put an end to international matches played at an altitude of over 2500 metres (8200 feet) last week.
FIFA president Sepp Blatter said the decision was taken to ban the oxygen-sapping games after a review by the medical team for world soccer’s governing body was released. Bolivia has traditionally held its World Cup qualifiers in the capital city La Paz at an altitude of about 3,600 meters (11,810 feet). There has been criticism that Bolivia’s advantage is not only unfair, but also dangerous for players’ health.
Quotes of the
Season

A few quotes of the season coming up for you next week, but here’s a couple to start you off with:
“She shouldn’t be here. I know that sounds sexist but I am sexist. This is not park football, so what are women doing here? We have a problem in this country with political correctness - bringing women into the game is not the way to improve refereeing and officialdom. If you start bringing in women you have big problems. It is tokenism for the politically correct idiots” – former Luton manager Mike Newell endears himself to female referees.
“You’ve always got to aim for the skies. If one or two clubs maybe aimed a little bit higher with the quality they’ve got, maybe this league would be a bit more exciting, rather than waiting for the top four to win all the time. I think you’ve got to push for the heights” – Aidy Boothroyd, manager of bottom placed Watford.
“Football’s a difficult business, and aren’t they prima donnas?”
- HRH Queen Elizabeth II

Ron captures ‘Monthly Mug’

Phoenix Members Golf Group

Mike Gerrard
Wednesday, May 31, Phoenix,
Monthly Mug,
Stroke

The monthly mug stroke play soon comes around again, and it turned out to be a fine day with a fair breeze blowing in from the sea.
The Mountain and Lakes course were our challenge for the day, and a good field of 17 players (all men for a change) set out at a fairly good pace for the front nine.
Winner of the, now large pewter tankard this month was our chairman, Ron Bridge, with a sparkling Net 67. In second place was Richard Tzerskieviche with a Net 69, third was newcomer Rolf Figenschou with Net 70 and 4th was Graham Hiskett with a Net 72.
Visitor Garry Clark kindly donated a couple of Delfte miniature houses (including a little something inside of them) for a special prize for the day and they were shared by the first and second placed players who both scored a gross 12 for all par 3s.
Technical prizes went to Norm Robinson, Garry Clark, Richard Tzerskieviche and Jack Spencer.
Sunday, June 3, Phoenix,
Stableford

Whilst our Sunday captain Ben Hogstrom is visiting his homeland (Sweden) for a few weeks and our handicap man Mike Poustie is in the U.K., yours truly has been blessed with looking after the Sunday golf.
If you are not aware of our domestic handicap system for Sundays, I will remind you that sometimes we have some special scores. That’s what it’s designed for. All of our Sunday members are sure to win eventually and the winners are usually cut so drastically that they cannot win again for some time. All good fun.
This week the conqueror of the Mountain/Lakes course was Jack Spencer (he will be cut 6 shots for next week). In second place was Ron Bridge and third was another guy in good form lately, Richard Tzerskieviche.
Technical awards went to Ron Bridge and Richard Tzerskieviche for taking 2 near pins.
Note: If you feel like coming along to play you are welcome any time. Just contact any of the committee of the Phoenix Members Group and we will get you in (at the right price for such a wonderful course). Next Wednesday, June 13, will be a 2-ball scramble of single gender teams only. Early sign-up is essential so that teams of 4 can be arranged in advance. Contact Mike Gerrard on 087 091 7565.

Andersson cleans up at the Emerald

IPGC Jomtien Golf

Monday, May 28,
Emerald,
Stableford

After our week-long tour of Hua Hin, it was great to be back and to play some of our popular courses. There were 29 players out today and with the two-divisional cut at 1-18 it was all to play for.
Mikael Andersson, playing some great golf lately, scored 39 points and off his 5 handicap to win first place in the div 1 stableford competition. He also claimed two nearest the pins and the only ‘2’ of the day to leave Paweenas a happy man. John McLoone on 38 points finished second and Arthur Hancock came in third, six points further back.
Les Hall’s 42 points topped the second division with Miss Am finishing second on 39 and Alan Bissell third with 37, beating Tony Duthie on count back.
Alan and Peter Grant also won nearest the pins in this division. There was no ‘2’ recorded so a rollover commences at Plutaluang next Monday.
Wednesday, May 30,
Pattaya C.C.,
Stableford (Pairs)

With a Sports Day green fee of 1800 baht for four persons, we decided to hold a two-person multiplier stableford competition as well as our normal individual game.
Eighteen teams were listed the night before but as always on the morning, the odd person drops out causing a nightmare for the organising team.
There were four purses to be won in each division for the stableford scores and 1st and 2nd in the team event.
Les Hall and John McLoone’s 70 points just pipped Bob Martin and Alan Bissell by one point to take the multiplier prize. Still trying to get down to 6 again, Dave Richards recorded 37 points beating Bob Martin on count back 22/18 in the individual event. Third place went to John McLoone with 35 points followed by Andy Mills on 34.
In division 2 Les Hall just beat Alan Bissell by one shot to take pole position, one point behind on 35 and in third place was Colin Mearns and in 4th with 34 points was Burnie Sinclair.
Back at the bar we were told that the old man, Ken Foster, had been admitted to hospital with cardiac heart problems, our thoughts were with him and Nom.
Friday, June 1,
Eastern Star - Paweenas v Peacock Place,
Singles Match-play

A fun day out but with some serious golf and rivalry between the 12 players on each side as it was all to play for. There were many complaints afterwards regarding the condition of the greens but everybody had a great day out, with the exception of one of our players who walked off after 16 holes, and we apoligize for that.
As the cards came in the scoring was very tight, and it was only on the last game (the single handicappers) and the last hole that we lost to finish 1 down in the match.
Congratulations to Peacock Place, we are looking forward to a re match in September.

The Gosnells’ take a few home

IPGC golf from The Haven

Monday May 28, Green Valley, Stableford
Division 1
1st Barry Manns 37pts c/b
2nd Serge Straeten 37pts c/b
3rd Dave Thomas 37pts
Division 2
1st Rod Crosswell 35pts c/b
2nd Terry Hodgkiss 35pts c/b
3rd Geoff Braimbridge 33pts
With the latest two members from Gosnells’ Golf Club in Western Australia joining for the day, the field was large enough to make two divisions, which is an unusual occurrence in the low season. It also was the reason for a call from Steve Richards back in Perth asking when his club members would be returning as they were waiting to hold their monthly medal competition.
Barry Manns led a very tight first division by virtue of the count back from Serge Straeten and Dave Thomas. Rod Crosswell took the second division also by count back from Terry Hodgkiss and at last Geoff Braimbridge made it on to the podium in third place with an excellent round. He now feels well capable of explaining the rules to a few of his playing partners.
There were no 2’s in the second division so the large pot was carried forward but Rick Holmes had one in the first division to sweep the pool.
Before presenting the Prizes The Doc welcomed Steven Barclay as a new member and also welcomed back Peter Bye, Yasuo Suzuki, Stephen Lewis, Len Hardingham and Rod Crosswell.
Wednesday May 30, Crystal Bay, Stableford
Division 1
1st Russell Exley 37pts
2nd Pat Quinlivan 35pts c/b
3rd Phil Groves 35pts
Division 2
1st Wayne Harman 41pts c/b
2nd Brian Libbey 41pts
3rd Alan Griffiths 40pts
Another large turnout meant another two divisions. Russell Exley, not overawed in the least by finding himself in exalted company in the first division, was the clear winner by two from Pat Quinlivan and Phil Groves in second and third places.
Wayne Harman put in yet another low score to ensure a bit of surgery over the weekend and with a tremendous back nine, it was enough to take the top prize away from the amazed Brian Libbey who thought he was a certainty for the top slot. Also extremely surprised was third place man Alan Griffiths whose 4-under was also not good enough on a day of low scoring in the second division.
In the first division 2’s, Al Keith and Barry Winton had one each and Phil Groves had two and in the second division Stephen Beard, showing he had not lost his touch with the short irons and the flat stick, had the only one to sweep the large pot and the carry over.
Back at The Haven Brian Libbey was welcomed back and there was an extra warm welcome back to singles competition for Stephen Beard, who even managed to score a few points.
Friday, June 1,
The Emerald,
Stableford

1st Rick Holmes 38pts c/b
2nd Bob Maloney 38pts
3rd Yasuo Suzuki 36pts c/b
4th Alan Griffiths 36pts c/b
5th Brian Libbey 36pts
For once in the week the Gosnells’ boys did not get a top placing but Bob Maloney was a very close second by count back from Rick Holmes. Rick needed to win as he had been unable to empty the ATM prior to the morning’s departure and without a win was looking forward to a very meager evening at the supping table. In the event it was service as usual plus a bit.
Yasuo Suzuki, even with the benefit of an outstanding day with the putter, was unable to make an impression on the top two but just edged out Alan Griffiths and Brian Libbey in the first count back, whilst Alan took the last honours with a marathon count back that went all the way to the last two holes.
For once Russell was unable to make an impression, as his mind was no doubt on the trip up to the village that was due to start straight after the competition, where the new addition to the Exley family was due to be shown off to the local populace.
Kazuo Takimoto had one ‘2’ and Yasuo Suzuki had two 2’s in the first division whilst Alan Griffiths and Terry Hodgkiss had one each in the second division.

Marc Napier marks a “1”

A Flight
1st Jack Grindvold (5) 41pts
2nd Jim Munns (11) 41pts
3rd Jeremy Masse (10) 40pts
B Flight
1st Terry Phur (15) 41pts
2nd George Jackson (16) 41pts
3rd Don Lehmer (13) 40pts
C Flight
1st Ken Kutzing (21) 40pts
2nd Mike Craighead (22) 39pts
3rd Lou Szigligeti (20) 37pts
Near Pins: #2: Nat Meesuk; #9: John Hillier, #12: Bryan Carroll; #16: Marc Napier
Hole-in-One: Marc Napier
The star of the day, notwithstanding four scores of 41 points, had only 31 points but had one magic swing. Marc Napier, who had to return to work in Iraq, will have something to keep him going until his next holiday as he canned a career highlight dodo on Green Valley’s 16th. The lads and lasses all hoisted a glass, provided courtesy of Marc, to toast his accomplishment.
Getting back to the mundane stuff, Wacko Jacko edged Capt. Fogg on count back to take the Premier Flight’s top spot and separate two of the aforementioned 41’s. Jeremy Masse was left only third despite an excellent 40 points. It was Jeremy’s second consecutive Sunday bronze.
Terry Phur did the same to One Ball to differentiate the other two 41’s, this time in B Flight. The Lady’s Man’s third place 40 points gave a strong indication that he is returning to form after a trip to the States.
K4 copped his second consecutive Sunday C Flight gold with his 40 point round. That was one up on The Mechanic and three in front of the duet of The Zigger and Ms. Mol. In a count back devoid of chivalry, The Zigger left Ms. Mol with only the money in Robbie’s pockets.
Tuesday, May 29, Khao Kheow A & C - Yellow Tees, Stableford
A Flight
1st Troy Misiak (10) 38pts
2nd Don Lehmer (13) 36pts
3rd Marc Napier (10) 36pts
B Flight
1st Wayne Harman (20) 35pts
2nd Nok Samporn (36) 33pts
3rd Barry Manns (15) 31pts
2’s: Brian Wilkinson, Fergus O’Brien
Troy Misiak, assembling a fine female retinue at night known as the Women of Troy, showed he can burn the candle at both ends as he came in on the day with an A Flight winning 38 points. Continuing that theme but not the same guy, The Lady’s Man counted back Our Title Guy into third and poor Mr. Lindsay all the way off the podium.
In B Flight, a pair of the marauding band of Aussies took first and third, whilst Nok Hester was the proverbial rose betwixt two thorns, taking second for what this Scribe believes to be her first Society payday.
Wednesday, May 30, Crystal Bay A & B - White Tees, Stableford
1st John Emmerson (10) 37pts
2nd Mike Gaussa (13) 36pts
2’s: None
With a good-sized group on the road to Soi Dao, a spirited but small lot took on Crystal Bay. The Ol’ Silverback edged The Gauze by a single point.
Friday, June 1, Green Valley - White Tees, Stableford
A Flight
1st Jim Munns (11) 43pts
2nd Troy Misiak (10) 38pts
3rd Walter Baechli (13) 37pts
B Flight
1st Dave Schelling (20) 45pts
2nd Matt “Ernie” McInerney (22) 38pts
3rd Charles Sheppard (18) 36pts
2’s: Peter Hynard, Dave Schelling, Barry Manns
Dave Schelling’s magnificent performance on this day may well have warranted the Title Slot - but for Mr. Napier’s dodo.
Dave who is now putting a concerted effort into improving his game is seeing inspiring results. His B Flight winning total was 7 points clear of Capt. Ernie’s 38 points and two clear of Chas and Sim. For the second time on the week the male player did not put his cloak over the pond. Chas had the better of the count back that cost the GM’s Mrs. her first Society payday.
Capt. Fogg racked up a first place in A Flight to go with Sunday’s second, whilst Troy racked up a second place in B Flight to go with Tuesday’s first. Free-spirited Walter Baechli made his own 37 points stand up for A Flight third.

John wraps up ‘Golfer of the Month’ award

PSC golf from The Bunker

Monday, May 28, Bangpra, Medal
Monday saw the Bunker Boy’s play a Medal competition at Bangpra and we saw Geoff Hart come out on top for the first time in ages, winning with a great five-under par net 67. Geoff was one shot ahead of Eddie Martin who returned a four-under par net 68 and joint third place went to John McDonald and Mashi Kaneta, both on net 73.

John McDonald - May’s ‘Golfer of the Month’ at The Bunker.

Third place today was enough to see John McDonald win the ‘Golfer of the Month’ trophy for May - well done John!
Near pin prizes went to Charlie Gooch, Roger Privett, Glen Cunningham and John McDonald.
Wednesday, May 30, Crystal Bay, Stableford
In a Stableford competition at Crystal Bay Lee Butler won the B Flight with the best score of the day, coming into the clubhouse with a fantastic 42 points. Second place went to Roger Privett with 38 points, who found himself unusually in the B Flight due to the cut being at handicap 13 and under. Trevor Sharman claimed third place with 37 points.
In the A Flight Paul Smith won with 39 points, John King came second with 38 points and Mashi Kaneta shared third place with Gerry Cooney, both with 36 points.
Near pins went to PJ Redmond, Glen Cunningham, Mashi Kaneta and John McDonald.
Friday, June 1, Plutaluang, Medal
Plutaluang was the venue for the first Medal competition of the new month and Eddie Martin won with a one-over par net 73. Geoff Parker came in second one shot behind with net 74 and lady golfer Mam Morel came third with net 77.
Near pin prizes were won by Unto Kilvonen, Bob Turner, Gerry Cooney and Geoff Parker.

Daryl takes the day but Dick is the man for May

PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s

Tuesday, May 29, Khao Khaow, Stableford
The question of the day was who would be the ‘Alan Bolton Golfer of the Month’, and it was quite tight, any one of three players could win.

Tuesday’s winner Daryl (left) and ‘Golfer of the Month’ Dick Warberg (right) with one of Bert’s finest.

Dick Warberg, as seems the norm, led the points, but Chris Youngman and Gareth Weeks were both in striking range.
The course was quiet, so after a quick book in it was off to the first Tee and the test for the day was to be the B & C Nines. It was a bit soggy underfoot, but otherwise the course was in pretty good condition. The fairways were grassy and easy to hit off, the greens were a bit too green, but the rough was really tough. It is hard to get out of the rough here at the best of times, but on this day it was even more so: long, wet, wiry grass, and as is normal, the ball sank straight to the bottom.
The weather actually turned out quite nice, there were plenty of rumbles and bangs up above, but we got around in nice weather and at a good pace.
Back in the restaurant all the interest was focused on who would win the monthly award. It got even more interesting as for a long time we had a 4 way count back for the win, one of whom was Gareth and he had a ‘blob’ on the 18th hole. Meanwhile Dick had had a bad day. Would he still do it?
At the last minute Daryl Evans came in with 35 points to win the day, with a 4-way count back on 34 points seeing Mike Gosden in second, Perry McNeely in third and Gareth Weeks and Derek Brook losing out. Losing the count back cost Gareth his chance, and the ‘Alan Bolton Golfer of the Month’ was named as Dick Warberg - by the skin of his teeth.

Phil’s ‘Birthday Bash’ at Burapha

IPGC golf from the Caddy Shack

Friday, June 1, Burapha,
2-Man Scramble

As it was Phil’s Birthday, we decided to celebrate with a 2-Man Scramble at Burapha over the C & D courses. A full compliment of players turned out and unfortunately we had to turn a few away because of limited tee-off times.
The weather was perfect and the greens and fairways were immaculately presented and all was set up for an ideal day of golf.
The competition itself proved to be intense with Richard and David (surnames unpronounceable) coming in third with Net 62.9. One step above them in second was the team of John McDonald and Glen Cunningham on Net 62.8, but the winners were the pairing of Dene Airey and Geoff King who had nine 3’s on their scorecard and came home with a score of Net 62.6 off their combined 5.4 H/cap.
Technical prizes were sponsored by Birthday Boy Phil, Emmet White and the Caddy Shack and were claimed by the following players: Long Putt on D9 - Trevor Sharman; Long Drive on D5 - John McDonald; Near Pins C5 - Phil Smith, C8 Glen Cunningham, D2 Gary Bellchambers and D8 Geoff King.
A lucky draw back at the presentation for a 3-course Sunday Lunch was won by Emmet White and Glen Elsworth.
The Caddy Shack would like to thank everyone who turned up to wish Phil a Happy Birthday and join in the celebrations - which continued well into the wee hours.

Birthday Boy Phil (3rd from right) celebrates with a pose of players back at the Caddy Shack.

ANZAC Day at Plutaluang

IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at the OK Corral

Sunday, May 27, the Pattaya Golf Society were piped aboard a full Royal Thai Navy course at Plutaluang to play a stableford competition over the South and East nines: the more challenging North and West nines being off-limits for cart users.
The day was fine, the course was in good shape and the large group would find that Plutaluang would be an excellent test.
Stuart Thompson found conditions to his liking as he started off on fire with a two-over par gross on the first nine but stuttered to finish with 34 points for fourth place. On an all-antipodean podium, Aussie Wayne Harman posted 36 points for third and the victory was shared by another Aussie Gerry Oeding and Kiwi David Thomas, both of whose cards of 37 points showed a mastery of the course.
It was David’s second successive victory at the course and his gross 78 was also the best of the day, despite some lapses of concentration which cost him a couple of extra points.
The only Brits in the top fifteen were Len Jones and Tony Kitchen, showing the dominance of the colonies on this occasion.
For the third successive Sunday there was a dearth of birdie 2’s despite many attempts and stand-in organiser Dave Thomas capped a fine day’s work by presenting the ‘Booby Bevy’ to Jean Morel on the occasion of his first round with the group.
The PGS Sunday Special roadshow transfers to Bangpra for the next few months in search of quieter times, and all are welcome. Just call Mr. Denis at the OK Corral to make arrangements.
Victory for the
form guys

Crystal Bay in low season is a golfing joy and on Tuesday, May 29, the Pattaya Golf Society left the bustle of Soi Rungland for the tranquility of this quality golf course to play a medal round.
The day was overcast throughout but the weather stayed pleasantly warm and the small group enjoyed a warm welcome and some fine golf on the “A” and “B” nines. The course was in excellent condition and the greens were less savage than normal as a result of some recent heavy dousings.
Ray Underwood returned to the podium after his recent return from the UK with a steady level par net 72, but playing partner Tony Kitchen took another step down the handicap ladder with a fine net 71 which included a first nine of 39 shots. Heady stuff indeed, but he was matched by in-form player Keith Barr whose uncanny feel for the greens gave him another sub-par round, this time a net 71, to share the win. Keith also had the honour of the day’s only birdie ‘2’, the first for four PGS rounds, and the sight of a “Brinks Matt” security vehicle in Soi Rungland later gave him the excuse to ring the bell at the OK Corral!
Organiser Len Jones found a sleepless night and bubbling stomach cramps were eased by the ‘Booby Bevy’ after an erratic performance which saw him lose his entire handicap before nine holes were played. But for the rest of the field it was a day to savour Crystal Bay in low season.
Guests victorious
at Emerald

Public Holidays always draw the crowds and Thursday, May 31 - Visakha Bucha Day - was no exception as Emerald Ban Chang was crowded with a ninety strong five-ball tournament, leaving the two Pattaya Golf Society flights sandwiched in at the end and making it a very long day indeed.
The format was stableford and the field saw the inclusion of many old friends coming to enjoy the holiday golf. The course itself was in fine condition following the recent storms and the scene was set for a tight competition.
With the cut at eighteen and under there was still some skill in the second division and Brian Vale enjoyed his round, posting 36 points for third place. Len Jones went one better with 37 points for second place whilst Aussie Wayne Harman’s excellent 39 points won the division.
In the top flight David Thomas shot the day’s best gross, yet again, with a fine 83 giving him 32 points for a share of third place with Joop Medze, whilst teacher Ian Grout forsook his class for the break and recorded 34 points for second place. The day’s winner was Roy Thornton who managed to put behind him the experience of being in the first group, thus tolerating the many holdups in a three-hour front nine, and put together a level par 36 points card for the divisional win.
Roy joined Len Jones, Ian Grout and David Thomas to share the 2’s pot but, as it was a “dry” day, the ‘Booby Bevy’ was withheld until a more appropriate occasion. Frustrating it may have been but it was nevertheless enjoyable to be on the golf course with friends.

Thong steals the thunder at Greenwood

PSC golf from the PJ Pool Bar

David Gardner
Tuesday, May 29, Greenwood, Stableford
1st Thong Pimblett (40) 40 pts
2nd Neil Duncan (15) 38pts
3rd Yves Philibert (26) 34pts
4th Jeremy Masse (10) 33pts
Near Pins: Jeremy Masse (2), Barry Quirk
Greenwood is always a pleasure to play. Not only is it a fine course of classic design, but it is invariably in excellent condition. Today was no exception, but it turned out to be a trial of endurance.

Tuesday’s winners (L-R): Yves Philibert, Jeremy Masse, Neil Duncan and Thong Pimblett.
Despite the anticipated long drive up the 331, nineteen players still assembled at PJ Pool Bar at 8.00am for the day’s outing. When we arrived at the course we were assigned to the C and A nines, the longest of the three possible combinations.
The first eight or nine holes were played in humid overcast conditions: lots of fluid required, but very pleasant. Then the all too familiar sight of dark thunder clouds gathered around. The rain started around the turn with thunder and lightning arriving shortly after. Slowly but surly the retirements started, depending on how close to shelter you were when a heavy squall hit. Only a handful completed the round, and whether you say ‘determined’ or ‘foolhardy’ with lightning flashing all around is open for debate.
Thong Pimblett battled on to the end amassing 40 points, a remarkable score in the conditions and the first outright lady winner for a long time. Neil Duncan came in second with 38 points which included three consecutive ‘blobs’ around the turn.
Jeremy Masse, a new recruit to our group had a good day. Not only a creditable fourth place with 33 points, but also picking up two near pin prizes. A cheer went up when he rang the bell after the presentation -a very diplomatic gesture on his first appearance at PJ’s.
Friday, June 1, Green Valley, Stableford
1st David Gardner (9) 38pts c/b
2nd Jeff Wylie (7) 38pts c/b
3rd Neil Duncan (15) 38pts
Near Pins: David Gardner, Jeff Wylie (2), Colin Cronin
Long Putt: Barry Quirk
Our Thursday fixture was cancelled as it was a holiday on the May 31. We quickly arranged a substitute event at Green Valley on the Friday, assisted by Yves Philibert who is a member.
The course was in good condition after recent rains. The fairways were particularly good, although some greens had recently been hollow tyned and sand dressed. With good weather and light traffic on the course, everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.
Scoring was generally good. From a small field of only thirteen, no fewer than three players tied on 38 points, requiring count backs to establish the places. David Gardner came out on top with 20 points on the back nine. Second and third places went to the last three holes with Jeff Wylie beating Neil Duncan seven points to five. Note that Jeff had a great start to the round with birdies at the first two holes. It was hard to improve on that!
At the presentation a few commented that Neil had secured a number of first three finishes in recent weeks and that Jeremy Masse had rung the bell on Tuesday after coming fourth. Neil duly obliged to a loud round of applause.

Gary shoots sub-par at Laem Chabang

PSC golf from the Peacock Place

Matt Anderson
Monday, May 28, Laem Chabang, Stableford
This was our yearly trip to the prestigious Jack Nicholas course and, in the past, we have seen it in better condition. 24 souls made the short trip.
Three divisions: A flight (0-12), first Gary Blackbourn (6) a very good under par 39pts; second Dave Arrowsmith (5) 36pts, third Bob Philp (8) 34pts - good shooting by the single figure handicaps.
B flight (13-19) first came Phil Smith (18) 34pts, second Brian Jacks (13) 36pts and third Bob (Baldrick) Drumm (15) 34pts. C flight (20+), very close to the Ladies division, first Paul Crosland (21) 34pts, second Mark Brenton (29) 31pts and third Peter Allen (28) 26pts.
There were ‘2s’ recorded by Gary & Bob whilst the winner of ‘The Hat’ was Todd Houston.
Wednesday, May 30, Treasure Hills, Medal
There was a lower turn out than usual, 13, lucky for some, nae me though. As usual, the round at Treasure Hill was had for a good price, but the road there was in a state of change, but we should be used to this by now.
The course, I felt, was in a poor condition, the back nine greens sanded, the same as the last time I was there. With so few players there was only one division, stroke play, a bit sadistic by Bob I felt.
The results were: first place Bob Philp (8) 68, second Paul Crosland (21) 74, third Brian Jacks (13) 76, and the lone lady, fourth, Mam Morel (28) 79. Same old faces except for Mam.
There was only one ‘2’ which was achieved by Bob. The winner of ‘The Hat’ was Martin O’Neil. That was the last game for Neil Hughes for a wee while, as he now has a job, he has been a good supporter of The Peacock, thank you Neil.
The Peacock Place is on Siam Country Club Road near the Mabprachan Reservoir. We meet for golf every Monday & Wednesday and leave around about 9am. Anyone wishing to player with a friendly group of golfers please call Capt Bob Philp on 087 941 2474

Another golfing day in paradise at Crystal Bay

The 68th PSC Members Monthly Open

Friday, May 25, Crystal Bay
With both the Charity Classic and the Club Championship out of the way it was back to the normal Pattaya Sports Club Monthly Tournaments: this one being on Friday, May 25 at Crystal bay.

Three of the happy flight winners from May’s PSC Monthly Open.

With a slightly later start of 10:30 a.m. and Route 3 being a lot less hassle these days, the forward party of Tony, Nigel, Tim and Bernie had a little extra time to set up in preparation for the arrival of the 88 golfers. As usual the staff at the course were very helpful and efficient.
The course on the day proved to be in very good condition but the greens were ultra fast. Coupled with this was the heat, and both factors managed to keep the scores down on the day.
The players returned to hand in their scorecards to Bernie who worked out the winners of the five flights, while they went of for a cool beer and a shower. Tim meanwhile flew around in his buggy to pick up all the technical markers. He was so quick that when he got to the final group and watched Jeff Wylie get a near pin and a 2 he took the marker and Jeff forgot to mark his near pin.
All results in and Bernie had them all collated in record time so the presentation started quite quickly. MC Nigel introduced Golf Chairman Tony Oakes who thanked all the players for their support and hoped they all had had a good day. He also thanked his team of helpers Nigel, Bernie, Tim, and Alan who once again did us all proud with the great selection of prizes. He also reminded all members that the new membership cards are now available and can be collected from the PSC office.
It was good to see a couple of members of the Phuket golfing party at the tournament and they got some satisfaction from winning a flight and a couple of technicals after being beaten by the PSC team the day before.
The next tournament will be a 4-person scramble with a maximum of 1 lady per team on June 22 at Mountain Shadow.

Dennis squeaks past Bill ... again!

PSC Golf from the Beaver Bar & Grill

Friday, June 1,
The Emerald,
Stableford

This has got to be the third time that this has happened; and let me tell you it is becoming tiresome. When the chips are on the table and Bill Thompson and Dennis Willett are in the pot, Bill somehow manages to let Dennis rake it in.

(L-R): Dennis Willett, Lek (cute hostess) and Bill Thompson.

With an even par 36 on the front 9 and just 4-over after 16 holes, Bill assumed everyone else was playing for second place. A disastrous triple bogey on 17 proved to be the pivotal turning point. A par on the 18th gave Bill an accumulated total of 41 stableford points, but when the scorecards were matched, Dennis had also shot an even par 36 on the front nine. His back nine was the difference, though, as he outscored Bill 19 points to 17. Final result; Dennis 42 points, Bill 41.
To add insult to injury, in their normal Nassau match, Dennis won the front 9 by one and the back 9 by one. At some point payback is going to hurt.
Terry Curtis played steady all day and slipped into third place with 36 points, moving ahead of playing partner Tony Oakes and his 34 points.
Near pins were won by Dennis Willett on #7 and Sus on #15. Sus hit a beautiful shot into the green, coming to rest just one metre above the hole. But the man proclaimed by Dennis to be the best putter in Pattaya, Sus “One Putt” Ige, 3-putted from that meagre distance.
The Beaver Bar & Grill plays the Emerald each Friday with tee-off times between 7:45 and 8:45 a.m. The Beaver opens at 6:30 a.m. and early risers have plenty of time for the popular breakfast menu before tee-off.

Beaver Bar & Grill closing in on first place

Pattaya Sports Club Friday Bowling League

200 Bowlers: Tui, Bill, Aht, Somrak, Tukata & Barry.

Bill Key rolled games of 203 & 201, 557 series and Tukata bowled a 521 to lead Beaver Bar & Grill to a four-point win over Café Kronborg. Beaver jumped from fifth to second place and Café Kronborg went from third to fifth.
Brother D lost three points to VFW Post 9876 but are still in first place. Ooy bowled a 526 series for Brother D.
Jack & Tar and Three Sisters split their match with each team getting two points. Somrak bowled a 225 game, 522 series, for Jack & Tar and Teuvo had a 518 series for Three Sisters. Barry had a 203 game, 517 series, to lead Montana to a three point win over Café Ole. Jim bowled a 203 game, 526 series playing as a pacer.
Wade bowled a 541 series to lead Mai’s Thai Restaurant to a three-point win over Diamond Shop. Aht had a 207 game, 537 series, for Diamond Shop. Ken Crow returned to bowling after a long absence only to find that the bottle of wine he had left in his locker had turned to vinegar.

Big-hitting Kraft slices up the field

PSC golf from The Three Sisters Bar

With my computer finally back to normal all is going well. Rolling in at the end of the month was long hitting Paul Kraft. He not only hit it long but the rest of his game finally came together again. He killed the rest of the field leading by 10 strokes. Paul came in with 46 points as Sus in second could only manage 36. It was a massacre with no prisoners taken.
The week before, Bob Benda had a good game as he won with 40 points. After playing a few weeks up country, Bob’s game sharpened up as he made it to the top.
A surprise in second place was “Ole” Rollie Weese. Rollie, back from the USA, is hitting the ball better and managed 39 points, just one shy of the lead. As his game is coming together, his partner, Jim Tully, got no chance to leave the bottom spot. Tully is now waiting for Marvin Smith to arrive so he can get some relief.

The Square Ring: by Howie Reed

Much has been made about the demise of boxing and the rise of Mixed Martial Arts contests. Boxing, to be sure, isn’t what it once was but as Mark Twain wrote, “The reports of my demise are exaggerated.” That’s also true for boxing. Sick and maybe ready for life support - but not dead.
A couple of good fights and fighters would sure help. Last week the World Cup, World Series and the Melbourne Cup of MMA, this time in the form of the UFC, was held in Las Vegas. Pundits came out of the woodwork to tout the new king. “This will be the biggest pay-per-view ever. Boxing is dead”, screamed the headlines.
In the cold light of day one has to wonder how long punters will continue to shell out US$59.95 for a main event (Quinton “Rampage” Jackson over Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell) that lasted 1:53. Another fight lasted 52 seconds and a one was a first round TKO.
It may be true that MMA is the future, but to play with the words of the late George Allen, coach of the Washington Redskins, “The future ain’t now.”
On Sunday if you get a chance, and the TV Gods align up, don’t miss the double dipper from Madison Square Garden, which was in New Amsterdam but is now in New York. Kinda follows in the old “Istanbul was Constantinople”, a song made famous by The Four Lads in 1953 which reached No.10 on the Bill Board charts.
New York will be celebrating Puerto Rico Day with Miguel Cotto at 29-0 defending his WBA welter title against Zab Judah (34-4). This will be a heck of a showcase for Cotto and probably the last big payday for Judah. He’s lost to Carlos Baldomir, was embarrassed by Floyd Mayweather jr and hasn’t had a win since ’05.
Cotto is really good, especially when working to the body. Be nice to see him face a real welterweight, someone like Shane Mosley, but that won’t happen.
The semi-main has a familiar name in Pacquiao, but it’s Bobby not Manny. Bobby is OK and probably gets a fight with Humberto Soto, mainly because Promoter Bob Arum will do anything to keep brother Manny happy.
Humberto, who is really good and former NFL player Benny “I keek a touchdown” Ricardo’s favorite fighter, hasn’t been defeated since 2002 when he lost a majority decision to a then relevant Kevin Kelly. Since then he’s got 10 KO’s from 16 wins with one “no contest” tossed in for good measure. It’s one worth getting up for!
One not worth getting up for or even watching is Antonio Tarver’s comeback fight on Sunday. Too bad, no one missed him.
I say Jeeves, here’s another of those links to ‘Istanbul was Constantinople’ deals. This time it’s in Ankara at the Ataturk Spor Salonu.
Professional boxing was banned by the Turkish government in 1980 but the ban is now over with the “Bull from the Bosporus” Sinan Samil Sam (27-3) set to mix it up with Oliver “The lights are on but no one’s home” McCall (50-8).
McCall has won 10 in a row against some boxers that are still breathing - but barely. Sam has never beaten a good heavyweight but has won a couple in a row after losing in lopsided fashion to Oleg Maskaev (111-116, 111-118 and 109-118). Sam has done well fighting in the land of Volkswagen’s, bodacious Ta Ta’s, brats and beers. Although he was born in Germany, he is a “national hero” in Turkey. The country must be short on national heroes, although if my mind isn’t completely gone, seems the Turks were big on that little German house painter back in the 1930’s.
“I will not pass up this golden opportunity,” vows Sam. “I know that I have to beat McCall, and I know that I will beat him.”
The fight’s on June 16 for those that wish to make travel plans.
‘Your Lordship, you’ve been playing games with me. You told me to check the newspapers from Kansas City, Missouri for results of the fights between Kompayak Porpramook and Edo Resilay and Pornsawan Kratingdaenggym vs. Danny Sahuleka. Your Lordship must have been tipping a few because the fight was held at the Central Market of Nakornnayok Province.
‘Kompayak easily retained his ABCO light-flyweight title when he destroyed Indonesian No.3 Edo Resilay (9-2-2, 4 KOs) in two stanza’s. It was a “vicious body attack” that got the job done.
‘Pornsawan Porpramuk stayed undefeated at 20-0 but he had to go 10 rounds before getting a KO in a bout that was exciting with both fighters exchanging punches most of the time.’
Thanks Jeeves. There were two other Thai fighters that got a measure of revenge last week when they invited a couple of Japanese boxers in for a beating. Former WBO title challenger Terdsak “PoonInseegym/Pit Bull” Jandaeng (29-2) easily destroyed a Japanese fighter whose name was reported as Yamato Mitsuboshi in the opening round.
Meanwhile, two-time IBF mini-fly world champion, Ratanapol Sor Vorapin (50-6-1) knocked out 15-year-old Japanese Takayuki Okumoto in round two.
Man it could have been a Cinderella story when Thai No.6 super-fly, Khrongchai Soh Tiabkhun had to cancel a fight against Japanese boxer Kazuyoshi Niki. Tiabkhun was called to “urgent military service” to provide security at ex-Thai Prime Minister Thaksin’s trial of impeachment. At the last minute the promoter pulled Thai No. 8 flyweight Phetchbhuphan Sishpra-ifah out of the semi-main and put him in with Niki in the main event. Would the shoe fit? Nope. Sishpra-ifah (9-6) got KO’d at 0:25 seconds of the 4th.
Also traveling to Japan was Thai national 147-pound champ Singhtothong Fluoridegym (12-5). He would face and lose to unranked speedster Joji Osaki (10-3-10) by margins of 98-93 twice and 97-94.
Some things are just funny cause they’re funny. On Sunday, Sultan Ibragimov (21-0) captured the WBO heavyweight title from a fat and out of shape 273lb Shannon Briggs (48-5). This was a fight from the Boardwalk in Atlantic City that drew almost no attention.
Before the fight Briggs had predicted a first round KO. It wasn’t close although Briggs, trying his best to do his impression of Buster Douglas against Evander Holyfield, should get an “A” for effort. Over 12 rounds Ibragimov got a unanimous nod from judges Don Trella 117-111, Lynne Carter 119-109 and Luis Rivera 115-113.
In an attempt to hype the fight, Mike Tyson was going to walk Ibragimov to the ring and work his corner. Slight problem - Tyson can’t leave Arizona or California without the court’s permission. Permission denied.
Briggs after fight comments are what one would expect from a low life bum. Briggs didn’t disappoint. I didn’t see the contest myself but Patrick the “Flying Frog” and Vic O.R. Cross did.
“Another boring fight, Shannon Briggs - Sultan Ibramovich”, reported our Gallic correspondent. “Sultan was the best cause at least he did something. Briggs from round one until round twelve only gave about 4 jabs. He was way too big; a difference of 52 pounds is a lot. Sultan was very clever with a good game plan - stay away from Briggs right jab, which he did, and attack with sneaky combinations for 12 rounds.
“Congratulations Mr. Sultan, another heavyweight and new WBO world champion from overseas Europe! Yours - the Frog.”
Note to Mr. Frog: In today’s world, being a heavyweight champion has the same status as being the best snow skier in Iraq. We know we’re supposed to care but we have a hard time figuring out why?
O.R. meanwhile got right to the point.
“Howie, remind me not to watch any more heavyweight fights. When I saw Don King in Brigg’s entourage coming into the ring I should have realized it was time to turn the T.V off. Briggs was about as mobile as one of the TQ dancers - in other words he seemed anchored to the floor.
“The Russian did a lot of moving in and out and landed a few good shots but mostly utilized his speed to hit and run. Briggs did hit him two or three times but his vaunted right hand didn’t do any damage.
“The under-card was also a sleeper and these fights which started with Taylor/Spinks are actually being sold as pay-per-view here in Thailand to those who aren’t on the regular HBO package. For me it was free, but I still want my money back. Hopefully the next series will get better. It certainly can’t get worse.”
Jeeves, when you bring in the lager and cigars can bring your notepad also as I have a message for you to pass off to Vic Cross when next you ‘down a few’ with him. A nice Phuket Island Lager along with an ‘Antonio and Cleopatra’ while Gretchen Wilson sings on the sound machine ... Just right.
