Pattaya Sports Club Bowling League
Mai Munsitha is back in form as she bowled a very good
541 series to lead Snow Bowler to a three point win over VFW Post 9876 and
Snow Bowler are back in first place again.
Pao
Orawan was the only 200 bowler this past week.
USMC used their higher handicap to take two and one half
points from Canada and knock Canada out of first place. Pao Orawan had a 222
second game, 503 series, and Tue Pettae had a 525 series for Canada.
La Montgomery bowled a 529 series to help her Brother D team to a three
point win over Bavaria. Brother D remain in third place and Bavaria remain
in fourth but a few points back from where they were last week.
Green Tree led by Noodle Russell’s 552 series took all four points from Café
Kronborg. Rich Murphy had a 528 series and Somrak bowled a 524 for Café
Kronborg.
Sea fishing with the KPK Foods Club
A happy group of anglers with their prize catch.
Mike Gerrard
Knowing the tide would be going out this week (smarty
pants aint I) it was decided to start out a little later than usual. So with
my band of buccaneers we set sail at 8.00 a.m.
After the inclement stormy and windy weather of late, today was back to near
perfect conditions; hot, but with a slight breeze for comfort and the sea
not too choppy.
The crew this week were all newcomers and one of them Da (a lovely maiden of
the area) stood up to the task very well for her first trip. It’s usually a
case of sick for a while and then sleep all day, but not this young lass as
she had a good stomach for the ride.
You sort of got a feeling that this day was going to be something different.
Well it was. After about 45 minutes of chat and waiting for action there was
a few scuffles in different areas of the water. One of them was a shoal of
school jacks who were herding a shoal of small fry for their breakfast.
Unknowing to them, whilst they were busy doing this something loomed out of
the shadows (start the music Derr derr, Derr derr). Straight into the shoal
of school jacks went this big shark. We watched in awe as the big dorsal fin
raced through the water after his or her breakfast.
The only sad part of this action was that all other fish had decided to go
on holiday for a while. However not long after we had our first hit of the
day on one of the big rigs. Although it was a nice (approx 3 lb) snapper it
was not the big fish we had hoped for. Jerry Wesz had drawn number 1 ticket
so he started the day off nicely.
Shortly after our Skipper moved over a few hundred yards and we soon had
another big rig reel screaming. This time ‘Big’ Steve Craythorn landed a
nice 6 to 7 lb cobia.
Soon after Mike Downes had a nice little fight with a fine cobia of about 10
to 12 lbs. Then Da managed to land a beautiful pompano of about 5 to 6
kilos.
The tide started to turn about midday and we managed to get the small hand
rods into the water for about 30 minutes during which time many pladang and
snapper were pulled in - my favourites these - so tasty cooked in olive oil
and garlic etc. Makes your mouth water don’t it!
Later in the afternoon as the tide started to race again, this time coming
in to land (much better for the big fish to come in after their afternoon
meal) it went quiet for a while. The first catch of the afternoon was nice
queen fish of about 5 to 6 lbs. landed by Goort Gelten.
The big hit should have gone to Mike Downes, but sadly was lost as he was
trying to reel it in.
Then Bang! Two rods together starting taking line and this time ‘Big’ Steve
from Mama’s Bar in Jomtien got into another cobia; slightly smaller this
time.
The other rod was hiding something much better. It was Da’s lucky draw to
reel this one in, but after a couple of minutes it was realised that she was
never going to handle this whopper (we won’t go into detail there). Poor
Goort (who had drawn number 5 on both lucky draw occasions) seized his
chance and seeing as how he was the closest to Da he quickly offered to
assist her and took the rod off her. Da was more than happy to let him as
well.
After about 20 to 25 minutes Goort managed to get the cobia (approx 20
kilos) to the side of the boat where the Skipper and his mate duly gaffed
the fish together to bring it on board. Yes it took two of them to lift it
out of the water.
So the conclusion of the day came at about 4.45 p.m. and we set sail for
terra firma, all completely satisfied and a little worn out from the hard
work and the fierce sun.
Didn’t take us long to get to the nearest bar for a well deserved amber
nectar to quench the thirst. It had been a long, but very rewarding day on a
beautiful day on the ocean.
Our next scheduled trip is for the 4th or the 11th June. There are spaces
available so if anyone would like to join in the fun, please call me on 087
091 7565. From then at this time of the year we plan to go out every second
Saturday of the month. Or if you have enough people you can charter the boat
privately. All tackle and bait is provided for these trips, but if you have
your own tackle bring it along. The only thing you must do is bring your own
food and drink for the day.

John Mac takes it on count-back
Due to the fact of having only six players the week before, no write-up
occurred but the highlights were a win and nearest the pin prize for JJ.
The
previous week’s winner JJ outside Senorita’s Bar.
Eight players this week at Emerald, with everyone involved in all
competitions. Yet again there was no one in front of us on the golf course
so a nice leisurely round proceeded.
Prize giving was in the club house and John Mac took the win with 34 points
over Neville on count-back, with Terry C taking the nearest the pin.
Skin results were as follows: Dan M (4), Terry C (4), Andy Oz (4), John Mac
(2), Neville (2) with 2 rollovers to next week.
It is with a mixture of sadness and happiness we said goodbye to Andy Oz
this week, the former because he is a good old boy and the later because it
will enable me, your humble correspondent, to get home on time every Friday!
As per normal is was down to the bars in BC after golf for a few cold ones
and to commiserate with Oz because of his impending trip to Europe.

Wood on fire at the Valley
Lewiinski’s Golf Society
Sunday, May 15, Green Valley - Stableford
A Flight
1st Mark Wood (10) 46pts
2nd Dave Stockman (4) 43pts
B Flight
1st Peter Henshaw (19) 39pts
2nd Adam Oyston (20) 38pts
Near Pins: No 4 Dave Stockman, No 9 Garry Green, No 12 Dave Stockman,
No 16 Eddy Beilby.
Mark
Wood.
The performance on customer friendly Green Valley foretold it was to be a
week of outstanding efforts. Perhaps it was due to the drought finally
finding its way to all of the courses and a firming up of the fairways, or
perhaps it is a result of a winnowing of the competitors down to battle
hardened residents.
In any event, one didn’t have to look far for the man of the match as Mark
Wood led the premier lads home with a fantastic 46 points, which included a
no score on the par four fifth hole.
No one deserved to be more disappointed than Dave Stockton who saw his
stellar 43 points only good for second in A Flight. Dave went round in three
under gross and collected two near pins and three ‘2’s to boot. His brace of
near pins held out not like Nick Strasshine who once had three near pins
only for someone to have a hole in one on the par three sixteenth hole.
Garry Green and ‘The Donkey’ both finished with 40 points for nothing.
Terry
Mangan
Ah yes, Peter Don O’Corleone Henshaw kept the purple patch going as he took
the second flight with a solid 39 point haul, leaving Adam Oyston to fill
the podium.
Along with Dave’s three 2’s were those by Mark Wood, Garry Green and Bill
Mayfield.
Back at Lewiinski’s it was good to see buddies Jack ‘Bilko’ Spencer and
Jimmy ‘Captain’. Jimmy - what’s with the beard?
Monday, May 16, Bangpakong - Stableford
1st Terry Mangan (12) 45pts
2nd Peter Henshaw (19) 40pts
The size of the field might have been impacted by the low season and back to
back playing days, but the quality of the play was certainly not affected.
Ireland’s Terry Mangan followed Mark Wood’s 46 points on Sunday with his own
blistering 45 points here. Peter ‘Don Corleone’ Henshaw made it an all-Irish
affair as he fashioned a rock solid 40 points.
Terry added a ‘2’ to his winnings along with Yves Mouthier.
Wednesday, May 18, St. Andrews - Stableford
1st Terry Mangan (12) 40pts
2nd Mike Jeffreys (16) 38pts
3rd Colin Davis (16) 38pts
Desmond Muirhead’s monster seems to be loved or despised with few
ambivalent. Terry ‘I’m on form’ Mangan appears to be one of the “it’s ok”
guys as he carried on where he left of on Monday, carding a magical 40
points. The society hopes he can keep it up as the forthcoming handicap cut
will require it.
The silver and bronze was sorted out by a count-back with Mike the ‘Welsh
Wizard’ Jeffreys shutting the stable door in the ‘Donkeys’ face.
Never underestimate the Donkey as he-haw ways has the last laugh, posting
the days only 2.
The headline committee had their work cut out between Mark ‘no show’ Wood
and two time Terry Mangan. When the dust had settled it was Mark who held
up.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi 1, Beach Road Soi
13/3 near to Walking Street. Any one wishing to play with us just pop in,
and add your name to the list. Otherwise, give Colin a ring on 0898260764.
Transport is provided.

Roger’s new driver pays off
PSC golf from The Golf Club Sports Bar
Monday, May 16, Green Valley – Stableford
1st Roger Koehler 38pts
2nd Brad Sproxton 37pts
3rd Suzi Lawton 34pts
4th John Deardon 34pts
Roger Koehler got his driver re-shafted and it paid big dividends with 38
points and first place in today’s comp. Brad Sproxton, playing in the same
group, fed off Roger and came in second on 37. What would a comp be without
a count-back? Sweet swinging Suzi Lawton edged out JTB 18/17 as they
finished third and fourth respectively.
We welcomed back Brian Holden and Gavin Wright who were taking a break from
work related responsibilities.
Wednesday, May 18, St. Andrews – Stableford
1st Mark Wood 40 pts
2nd Gavin Wright 38 pts
3rd Mick Beresford 35 pts
No sclaffs today for Mark Wood; a scrambling 40 pointer and top spot in the
frame. Gavin Wright controlled his high fade and sank some long putts to
finish second on 38 points and ‘Best Dressed’ and third place went to “Come
on up and join me” Mick Beresford.
We had only 8 players today as the other 8 that signed up cried off because
of the rain in Pattaya. Upon arriving to the course we found dry conditions
and enjoyed a rain free round. Let that be a lesson for rainy season golf in
Thailand.
Thursday, May 19, Soi Dao Highlands - Stableford
1st Larry Maxey 37pts
2nd Bob Newell 34pts
We had smaller numbers for this excursion to Soi Dao, but made up for it
with good conditions and better camaraderie. A 12 o’clock tee time and we
got soaked by the end of the first hole. As quick as the rain came it was
over and play continued.
Larry Maxey, a first timer to Soi Dao, recorded a great 37 points to take
the frame while ‘Seamless’ Bob Newell was second with 34. We then adjourned
to the restaurant for a hearty night of libations and laughs.
Friday, May 20,
Soi Dao Highlands - Stableford
1st Jack Spencer 36 pts
2nd Mark Wood 36 pts
Day 2 saw a 9 o’clock start and wonderful weather. Our 2 groups were alone
on the golf course although we did manage to see one other 4-ball (when we
were finished and sitting in the lounge). A great day out!
Jack Spencer and Mark Wood tied for top spot on 36 points. For something
different we had a hidden partner comp and the draw winners were Mark Wood
and Gavin Wright. Thanks to all that supported us this past week. We are
planning another away trip June 8 & 9 with the venue TBD shortly.
Note: The Golf Club is located on Soi LK Metro, off Soi Buakhao and
Soi Diana junction. We can be reached on 085 434 3377 or pattaya4golf

Seventy-eight golfers ventured out on Highway 7 to one of the more

great scores were managed.

Ray continues fine form
PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside
Monday, May 16,
Green Valley - Stableford
Ray
Spence is all smiles after his recent golfing successes.
Golf changed to Monday this week, due to a holiday on Tuesday, and it was a
long awaited return to Rayong Green Valley. The course was in good
condition, particularly the fairways, but man, it was hot and humid.
With the ‘Low Season’ really to the fore, numbers were light for both games
this week, so Monday we played for front and back 9, with an overall winner
also, along with some token near pin prize money. Ray Spence (17) and Jimmy
Fortune (26) shared the front 9 with 17 each, while Jeff Wylie (5) got the
back 9 with 17, and Ray got the overall with 33 points.
Jeff and Joel got amongst the near pins.
Thursday, May 19,
Pattana - Stableford
Thursday we visited Pattana, with the C & B combination our test. Good
scores were hard to assemble on this day, however those that played enjoyed
the condition of the course and although there were some threatening skies
we did manage to finish without getting wet.
Tuesday 31/5 we are booked in for Pleasant Valley, with Thursday 2/6
scheduled for a trip to Greenwood.
Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf generally on Tuesday & Thursday (we
sometimes change to accommodate a Thai Holiday). Presentations are made at
the course on Tuesday, with Mulligans Lakeside hosting the Thursday
presentation. For more details on scheduling etc., please call 089 094 1841
or 081 935 8088. Hope to see you there, Cheers & Good Golfing!

Peter Karhu top scores for the week
Golf from the Travellers Rest
May
14 Greenwood winners: Ted Senior, Daryl Ottoway, Ken Mackenzie, Gary
Hooker and Fergus Brennan.
Barry Hooper
So here is another report from the TRGG and a slight
change in the usual format of visits this week because of the local
Tuesday holiday. As usual all the courses decided to up the prices
substantially on the Tuesday so no play and a shift to the Wednesday and
a visit to Burapha with a contingent of eighteen players.
The course as it turns out produced the best score of the week, from
Peter Karhill with his 40 points, and a good win on the day. He was
followed in by Ken MacKenzie just the one back at 39 and just one more
back was Derek Thorogood for third spot.
Saturday, May 14, Greenwood B & C - Stableford
1st Gary Hookey (16) 38pts
2nd Fergus Brennan (10) 36pts
3rd Ted Senior (11) 36pts
4th Ken McKenzie (20) 36pts
5th Daryl Ottaway (8) 34pts
The rest of the week was the usual format starting on Saturday 14th May
at Greenwood. The course played well I was told and the scores posted
seem to back that up with winner Gary Hooker coming home with 38 points
and a very clear win. The other positions were a different story with
them all resting on count-back decisions. Ken MacKenzie was the one who
lost out this time having been topped by Ted Senior (third) and Fergus
Brennan (second) all in with 36.
There was a small surprise in store for everyone who returned for the
presentation including myself. Fergus and his staff had prepared a
lovely buffet for everyone in honour of my 65th birthday that was coming
up on the Tuesday (which as anyone who lives here knows was going to a
dry day in the bars). I must say that was a very nice gesture for which
I offer my sincere thanks to the Travellers Rest.
Monday, May 16,
The Emerald - Stableford
A Flight
1st Tony Molloy (13) 36pts
2nd Bill McGarvie (9) 34pts
3rd Ted Senior (11) 33pts
B Flight
1st L. Symons (19) 36pts
2nd Ken MacKenzie (20) 33pts
3rd Peter Shaw (24) 31pts
Monday and a visit to Emerald took place with a very big turnout of some
twenty five players. This course is becoming very popular and why
shouldn’t it be because it is always in great condition and a fair cost.
I made mention in my previous week’s report that the Molloys (Tony and
Kay) had returned to see us and that they were getting to grips with the
local courses. My words were so succinct because Tony came out at
Emerald firing on all cylinders big time and took a great division 1 win
at 36 points and a full two up on his nearest rival Bill McGarvie at 34.
Ted Senior could only make 33 and third on this occasion, not able to
find the kind of form he had the previous week.
Div 2 was won by L. Symons (sorry no idea what the L stands for) with 36
points again, some three up on the next player second placed Ken
Mackenzie with 33 (he was having a good week with placings at every
outing). For third place we had to go back to 31’s from Peter Shaw and
Derek Thorogood and a count-back to decide that with Peter just edging
it.
Wednesday, May 18, Burapa B & D - Stableford
1st Peter Karhu (12) 40pts
2nd Ken MacKenzie (20) 39pts
3rd Derek Thorogood (17) 38pts
The next outing was on the Wednesday and as I reported and detailed at
the top of this brief it was a visit to Burapa with Peter Karhu coming
out on top with his splendid 40 points.
Thursday, May 19, Phoenix M & L - Stableford
1st George Bishop (15) 37pts
2nd Daryl Ottaway (8) 34pts
3rd Alun Webber (19) 33pts
4th Ken MacKenzie (19) 32pts
5th Peter Karhu (11) 32pts
Thursday was a trip back to Phoenix by request of our players and
despite the recent cost increase. We had a very good attendance and a
win for George Bishop with 37 points, three clear of his nearest rival
Daryl Ottoway at 34. The ‘Welsh Wizard’ Alun Webber is back and he took
third spot with his 33.
As I have said many times it is always very nice to see people returning
time after time back to us. We must be doing it right.
Note: If you want any further or fuller information about the
golf outings played by the TRGG from the Travellers Rest Hotel please
contact the hotel manager “Tewin Lamthong” on 0860567019 or call in to
the Travellers Rest in Soi LK Metro, Pattaya and look at the notice
board or visit their website at www.trgg.biz.

‘Big’ John and ‘Little’ Mike share the spoils
Phoenix Tuesday Golf Group
John
Bartley, left, and Mike Gerrard, right, were the joint winners at Phoenix on
Tuesday, May 17.
Mike Gerrard
As usual when it is a Buddha or Public holiday, the
management of most of the golf courses in these parts deem it fit to raise
the green fees to weekend prices for guests and visitors. Fantastic for the
members - no one on the courses except for them - which in itself reduces
the revenue for the club. It also makes the round so much more quicker.
Hardly a soul on the course and our little group of players were at the
presentation bar, (yes we found one open) at least 1 hour earlier than
usual. Problem with that is that we had more time to consume too much of the
amber nectar!
Today’s scores were not too much to shout about. Big John Bartley and yours
truly shared the honours with a poor 31 points each. The next best was Clive
Robinson with 28. Or was it that the course was playing difficult? We like
to think so.
In fairness the course is not at its best and it is only fair to criticise
after all the acclaim I give it the rest of the year. With the annual
closing of each nine holes in turn, the ground staff open the respective
nines far too early and they are not in good playing condition, especially
the greens. Why they do not wait for a couple of weeks I do not know and
instead of closing a good nine and opening a good nine, they prefer to close
a good nine and open a bad nine. Hope that makes sense?
Next week will be the end of the month stroke play competition for the
coveted Trattoria Italiana voucher donated by the lovable Giorgio Baccioli
(who incidentally is recovering nicely from the surgery to his wrist and
hopes to start practicing soon), with also a KPK Foods Ltd. cap donated by
Keith Keohane.
Along with these prizes our hosts The Relax Bar donate the lucky draw prizes
of one free drink and one free massage.
Sea fishing with our group is also on the up with many new crew members
signing up. June the 4th is the next scheduled trip and there are a couple
of spaces available for this trip if anyone is interested. This is also
sponsored by KPK Foods Ltd.
Anyone interested in either the fishing or the golf contact me on 087 091
7565.

Joachim makes winning return
PSC golf from The Fairways Golf Society
Monday, May 16,
Green Valley - Stableford
Monday’s
top three: Richard Hurley, Tony Duthie and John Coetzee.
On one of the hottest days of the year so far we arrived
here to find the course in its usual excellent condition, although the
greens were a bit tricky with some being exceedingly fast and others
deceivingly slow.
The competition was fierce with only one person breaking par, and it
appeared that almost anyone in the field could have won it on the final
hole. Richard Hurley birdied the last from a fairway bunker while his
playing partner John Coetzee sent his drive out of bounds to wreck his
chances of victory. Harvey Samuelsalso knocked himself out of contention
with a triple bogey and Tony Duthie missed a four-foot putt for par to ruin
his chances of winning on a count-back.
Near pin winners were John Coetzee and Ken Meek.
1st Richard Hurley (10) 37pts
2nd Tony Duthie (19) 36pts
3rd John Coetzee (19) 35pts
Wednesday, May 18,
Pattana - Stableford
There was more than a little doubt as to whether we would be able to play
today as it had been raining for three hours before we set off and continued
to do so for the entire journey here. Anyway the course was declared
playable so we teed off in a slight drizzle which dried up after just two
holes and we finished the round without interruption.
Billy (talkative) Vickers returned to form to take the honours today with an
excellent round of 39 points, and that man Richard Hurley played under par
yet again off his new 10 handicap.
Near pins went to Ken Meek and Richard Hurley.
1st Billy Vickers (13) 39pts
2nd Richard Hurley (10) 37pts
3rd Johannes Murkin (16) 34pts
Friday, May 20,
Greenwood - Stableford
After leaving Thailand on a winning note last month for a short break in
his homeland, Joachim Destreicher returned to carry on where he left off
with a great round of 38 points to take pole position today. He also had a
near pin as did his buddy Gary Saunders.
1st Joachim Destreicher (21) 38pts
2nd Gary Saunders (13) 35pts
3rd Tony Duthie (19) 32pts
Note: The Fairways Driving range is situated at the top of Pattaya
Klang on Sukhumvit Road and has golf outings every Sun/Mon/Wed & Fri. Anyone
wishing to play with us can call into the club house and put their names
down on the lists provided or call Scott on 084 389 2379. Transport provided
if required.

Chop wins her first Monthly Mug
PSC golf from the Café Kronborg
Peter Blackburn
Thursday, May 19, Pattaya C.C. - Monthly Mug
With most of us not having played for a week due to the Thai Public
Holidays, we were eagerly looking forward to getting back into it and a
round of stroke competing for the Café Kronborg Monthly Mug at Pattaya
Country Club was the challenge we faced.
Chop
Daprakhon, left, receives her Cafe Kronborg May Monthly Mug from Bjarne.
There was a fairly good field of twenty golfers and we
welcomed back Ken Bernek from his house moving chores in Detroit, Michigan
and also Chop, Patrice & Jean-Claude who joined us again.
Departing the ‘Kronny’ at just a tad before 0815hrs we arrived at the course
in around forty minutes and were informed that there would probably be a
wait of more than an hour as there was a ladies competition about to tee
off. The situation improved however as it would appear that many of the
ladies either were running late or were not coming so our six groups were
allowed to tee off and our first group got away at 0925hrs.
The weather was good although somewhat overcast and the course was in fine
shape although many greens had been cored and sanded. Our front nine was a
little slow as we were a threesome following the ladies and we had a couple
of drink stops to let them get ahead but still completed the nine in a
little over two hours. The heavens opened briefly a couple of times during
the back nine and we had to take shelter but finished the round in about
four hours and twenty minutes.
We had 2 Flights, A Flight for 0 to 17 and B Flight for 18 and over plus the
Monthly Mug winner and there were rewards on the four par 3’s and longest
first putts on the 9th and 18th greens.
It was an amazingly tight finish to decide the winner of the Monthly Mug
with 4 players having carded a net 72. It took more than just comparing the
back nine scores in the count-back as they were also all the same but ‘The
Admiral’ painstakingly sorted it out.
Winning her very first Café Kronborg Monthly Mug was Chop Daprakhon,
emerging victorious after the count-back. Patrice Bardy took out the A
Flight honours from Paul Avery, and Mike Allidi’s 73 off the stick was only
good enough for him to secure third place. Yours truly scraped in for fourth
spot with a scrambled net 75.
Mick O’connor fell in a heap over the last 3 holes with a 5, 9 & 7 and
should have won the Mug but was able to take out the B Flight with a net 74,
two shots better than Jean-Claude Coulon. Battling through with a very sore
elbow to finish third 5 shots further back was Mike Winfield with Wayne Koch
1 shot adrift in fourth place.
Many thanks once again to Bjarne and his family & staff at Café Kronborg for
their continued support of this monthly event.

1st Patrice Bardy (17) net 72
2nd Paul Avery (10) net 72
3rd Mike Allidi (1) net 72

The Compass Cap was well won by Ken Bernek, obviously suffering from the
after effects of packing up his house, and Deefa the Dog was not present,
being “up the bush” with his master, Hunter.

PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar
From the left: John, Jack,
Chad & Geoff sporting their hats, knitted by the caddies, at Pattaya Country
Club, Tuesday, May 17.
Monday, May 16, Burapha B & D - Stableford
Once again it was Burapha today and the loops of B and D were played,
well at least they were for 19 Outbackers, the other 3 preferred to play A &
C, resulting in their disqualification.
Following on from the recent Pro tournament, the course was still in
magnificent condition with fast but true greens, making for a good test of
golf. Ideal weather with no rain just a little hot in places but all in all
the temperature was very pleasant.
It was the Captain’s turn to smile today as his short game that has been
absent without leave, came home today and he won by a short head, two clear
of John Cunningham with 39 points and these two in turn were a distance in
front of the next man, Chris Fletcher with 32. The Capt’s caddie got three
of the caddy skins and the other was divided up between all four caddies in
the group, making the little lady (Bob’s caddie) extremely happy.
Pottsy returned to some form at last with a fine 38 points to take Div B
ahead of Ivan Plunkett with 37 and Bob Lindborg on 35.
There were three ‘2’s from Bob Philp, Pottsy & John Cunningham.
Div A (0-14)
1st Bob Philp (9) 41pts
2nd John Cunningham (7) 39pts
3rd Chris Fletcher (12) 32pts
Div B (15+)
1st Campbell Potts (21) 38pts
2nd Ivan Plunkett (20) 37pts
3rd Bob Lindborg (19) 35pts
Tuesday, May 17, Pattaya C.C. - Stableford
Playing golf for many of us is difficult at the best of times but there
are certain four-balls that play together that make the game a lot of fun
but that much harder.
Wherever John Lawton plays, you just know you’re in for that special
experience; add in Chad, Geoff and the General and the amber nectar flows
through the entire round. Just how Chad (2nd) managed to score 38 points
will never be known but one kind of had a feeling it was going to be his day
come hell or high water, as he opened up with three straight pars and nine
stableford points.
Jean Morel posted the top score of the day (41pts) off H/’cap 20 who
arguably should have played off 17 (IPGC) the differential caused by the
stupid anomalies between the two systems here in Pattaya (but we’ve been
there before haven’t we?) but either way he still would have won his
division. Not your fault Jean and well played mate!
Chris Fletcher took the premier class with his 39 points off of 12, followed
home by the resurgent Alan Whittingham (37pts) with Vic Hester (35pts) in
third.
There were two ‘2’s from Chad and Vic Hester.
Div A (0-18)
1st Chris Fletcher (12) 39pts
2nd Alan Whittingham (13) 37pts
3rd Vic Hester (14) 35pts
Div B (19+)
1st John Morel (20) 41pts
2nd Barry Chadbourn (19) 38pts
3rd Martin O’ Neill (26) 35pts
Wednesday, May 18, Bangpra - Stableford
Our first visit here since last August proved to be an interesting
experience for many of the ‘rain depleted’ field of 17 Outbackers,
particularly if one had played Pattaya Country Club, only the day before.
The heavy rain and thunderstorms that had been with us in Pattaya early in
the morning had spread their way up the coast and developed into a more
persistent rain, but fortunately with no lightning, as we neared the Bangpra
course. Some guys had already cancelled and one more pulled out upon our
arrival, but those who withdrew today missed what turned out to be an
excellent day for golf.
The course was void of players and after waiting around 30 minutes we teed
off in light rain which stopped completely after two holes giving way to
cool, very pleasant conditions.
The course as ever, had stood up well and even though the carts were still
allowed on the fairways, we decided to play “winter rules”, lift clean and
place, although it proved to be rarely necessary. The greens were just
wicked; horribly quick once past the pin thus making the putt up the hill
that much tougher for fear of going past and virtually impossible to play
for those who played Pattaya C.C. the day before.
Capt’ Bob & the General were severely mauled by Steve Mann & the Sugarman in
a side match, both of them failing to return a score. Alan Mann, Steve’s
brother on a visit from Aus, kept it all in the family as he took Div B with
the day’s top score of 37 points ahead of Suzi with 34, whose putting
improved considerably after the first three holes.
Vic Hester (35pts), playing with the Outback all this week, followed up his
third place yesterday, with a first today followed in by the other Mann,
Steve on 34.
There were no ‘2’s which wasn’t altogether surprising. We’re back here on
Weds June 8 if anybody fancies themselves against this excellent course,
just give Capt’ Bob a call.
Div A (0-15)
1st Vic Hester (14) 35pts
2nd Steve Mann (9) 34pts
3rd Murray Hart (12) 32pts
Div B (16+)
1st Alan Mann (22) 37pts
2nd Suzi Lawton (17) 34pts
3rd Campbell Potts (21) 32pts
Friday, May 20, Khao Kheow C & A - Stableford
Twenty Outbackers faced the tough opening par 5 on C at Khao Kheow on
what was another day of dismal performances on this ever tricky course. All
you have to do is hit the ball straight but the combination of water on one
side and OB on the other gets inside one’s head and the swing turns to
jelly.
So what was the top score of the day? Just 32! Suzi and Murray managed to
crawl to that total; although it deserves a mention that Suzi was playing
off two less than her official handicap, to bring her into line with the
men. Murray was second on count-back, with our organiser for the day, Steve
Mann, taking third on 31.
Nobody was more surprised that Pottsy, to win Div B with 30 points, his
second win of the week and he beat home the Sugarman on count-back and Andy
Makara in third on 29.
Finally, before anybody spots the two Barry McIntoshes, it is correct;
Barry’s son, Barry, joined us for hit and welcome to you mate!
There was a ‘jackpot 2’ today from Suzi Lawton on C3.
Div A (0-15)
1st Suzi Lawton (15) 32pts
2nd Murray Hart (12) 32pts
3rd Steve Mann (9) 31pts
Div B (16+)
1st Campbell Potts (21) 30pts
2nd Sugar Ray Handford (18) 30pts
3rd Andrew Makara (27) 29pts
Note: The Outback Golf Bar is situated about 6km from Sukhumvit Road
along Soi Siam Country. All are welcome to come and join us for a beer and a
hit. Just call in and put your name down on the list or give Bob a call on

Speirs in sublime form with 40-pointer
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Andy Baber - the division 2
winner at Eastern Star.
Monday, May 16, The Emerald - Stableford
After a hectic and enjoyable week in Hua Hin there were eight
cancellations overnight so numbers were well down today and there was only
one division out. Apart from one other society here the course was deserted
after we all teed off.
‘Kermit the frog’ was playing today and won the competition with 32 points
ahead of ‘Count-back’ Burnie in second with 29.
There were no ‘2’s in either division so rollovers to Wednesday at Pattaya
Country Club.
Wednesday, May 18, Pattaya C.C. - Stableford
There were 23 names on the list on Tuesday evening at Siam Cats for
today’s game but the rain started here at 7.15 a.m. the next day and became
horrendous 30 minutes later, lasting almost an hour and with the worst
flooding in Soi 5 for a long time the field was cut to 11 players through
last minute cancellations and no shows.
We arrived at the course and a slight drizzle was with us for the first two
holes but then nothing for the rest of the round.
Ian Speirs, playing off 9, won division 1 with 40 points ahead of Kari
Aarnio in second with 35. Ben Findon beat Bryan Rought in the second
division on a 21/15 back nine count-back after they both scored 37 points
and in the ‘2’s Grenville Hill birdied the tough 16th to be the only winner
in division 1 and Ben Findon the 12th in division 2.
There was a warm welcome back to Jomtien Golf for Alan Bissell after three
months in darkest Africa.
Friday, May 20, Eastern Star - Stableford
Almost back to reality for this time of the year as there were 19 out
today and we were playing the front nine twice due to the renovation to the
back nine greens. The first hole, with the improvement to the green, was
just acceptable but it was up and down over the next eight but for 400 baht
some were happy and others not, so we have cancelled next Friday and will
return in two weeks.
There were only two putts allocated on each green so a non-counting round
today.
Jim Lane won division 2 with 36 points and Neil Gamble beat Joe Kubon on a
18/17 back 9 count-back for second after they both shot 35.
Andy Baber (the lad with no car) beat Pete Sumner 17/16 on the back nine
after they both came in with 33 points in division 1, and Mike Missler was
third with 30.
It was bon voyage to Steve Ironside and Terry Redding for a six week trip
back to Oz, we will all be looking after his lady Pim for all of this time,
rest assured Terry.
After our trip to Hua Hin, which was enjoyed by most, we are now researching
a trip to Chang Mai playing golf on the Monday, Wednesday and Friday
departing on the weekend of the 10th September, all details will be in the
bar next month.

BJ prepares for marriage
IPGC golf from The Haven
Sunday, May 15, Green Valley - Stableford
CSS 71
1st Alec Hoare (18) 38
2nd Keith Emerson (12) 36
3rd Russell Goldsworthy (2) 35
Al
Rolnik.
Following a win in the same competition the previous
week Alec Hoar once again came out on top but this time with a score
that was one worse than the previous one at two under handicap to ensure
a long awaited drop in handicap much to the relief of his regular
playing partners.
Keith Emerson, taking a quick break from his ship duties as it lay in
Laem Chabang, made it well worthwhile as he claimed second spot two back
and one in front of Russell Goldsworthy whose 75 gross was only good
enough for third place this week.
There were no 2’s on the day.
As usual the presentations were conducted and overseen by Russell Exley
at the Golf Centre Bar on the course, with amiable hosts John and Geoff
assisted by their lovely staff, taking excellent care of the golfers.
Monday, May 16, Khao Kheow - Stableford
CSS72
1st Al Rolnik (20) 34pts
2nd Shuichi Kodaka (16) 29pts
3rd Darryll Kellett (16) 27pts
4th Barry Winton (4) 27pts
Shuichi
Kodaka.
Following an extraordinary amount of rain over the
weekend it was surprising that the competition got away at all but
although carts were being allowed, many parts of the course were under
water and most of the fairways afforded zero run which made the day a
rather long slog.
The condition of the course was quite good with the greens in
particularly good shape, there are however signs that the fairways are
being invaded with a rouge grass that will need to be attended to before
it gets out of control. The management advised us that they are looking
into the situation and will take the appropriate action in due course
(sic).
Al Rolnik made light of his recent 2 shot drop in handicap as he swept
to the top of the list by five clear shots, although not quite able to
equal par it was a round that was a study in application as he knocked
it down the middle time after time having honed his game from the tee
with hours of practice every week at the range.
Shuichi Kodaka was still struggling to come to terms with his dramatic
drop in handicap that saw it at its lowest ever level of 15, but on the
day he did well enough in the conditions to take charge of second spot
ahead of Darryll Kellett and Barry Winton by a single stroke.
Barry eventually lost the count-back for third place after losing to
Darryll by a margin of 16 to 13.
There were no 2’s in either division.
Before presenting the prizes Stephen Beard welcomed new member Stephen
Walker, and welcomed back Barry Winton after a very long layoff
following back surgery, Trevor Schirmer and Rod Howett both of whom had
been travelling to Hua Hin on a golfing busman’s holiday.
Friday, May 20, Crystal Bay - Stableford
CSS 71
1st Shuichi Kodaka (16) 39pts
2nd Darryll Kellett (16) 36pts
3rd Thomas Wilson (14) 34pts
4th Trevor Schirmer (14) 31pts
After many, many months of neglect in both the clubhouse and golf course
there seems at last to be some definite improvement in all areas, with
the changing rooms especially getting a sprucing up and the shower
cubicles having a spring cleaning.
The courses for the day’s competition were the A & C layouts and they
also appeared to have benefitted from an increase in green keeping
activity with the greens playing particularly well. The overall scoring
of the day bore out the improvement as the CSS went down to 71 with many
of the participants getting within the buffer zone.
Shuichi Kodaka, no doubt having taken heart from his earlier outing the
week, at last got on terms, and indeed better, with his handicap,
playing under it by three and in the process picking up another win to
add to this year’s haul.
Darryll Kellett was also in good form with a level handicap round that
for the second time in the week put him amongst the prizes and into
second place ahead of Thomas (a.k.a. Jimmy) Wilson by two, with Trevor
Schirmer holding down fourth with an unspectacular return no doubt
affected by receiving the shocking, but at same time thrilling news that
his great pal and long time drinking partner, B.J. Smith, was preparing
to tread the bridal path with his young lady.
Unfortunately the wedding is due to be held in Khon Kaen, thus making it
difficult for many to attend, and so the celebrations for those left in
Pattaya will have to await the happy couples return to the south to join
in the congratulations with the odd one or two celebratory drinks.
Once again there were no 2’s in either division as both the pools
continue to grow, and with the second division getting particularly
heavy.
Before the presentations there was a welcome back for Takeshi Hakozaki.
Note: As from the 1st of May the Haven group will depart Soi 13
at the earlier time of 8.30am until further notice. If you would like to
play with The Haven group you can contact mobile 084782 4582 or call in
to the hotel at 185 Soi 13 between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All
transportation to the course is arranged and you do not need to sign up
prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.00 on Mondays, Wednesday,
Fridays and 9.00am on Sundays on the days you wish to play. A schedule
of courses to be played can be found on our web site at
www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Mashi still in the groove
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
Wednesday’s top three Derek
Brook, John Roberts and Mashi Kenata with one of Bert’s finest.
Derek Brook
Wednesday, May 18, Pattana – Stableford
The problem with playing Pattana is not the distance, these days it is
just a nice drive, but that their Sports Day is on a Wednesday. Playing on a
Tuesday and a Friday, this month with Tuesday in red on the calendar, I put
it back a day and thus Wednesday was Pattana.
The day started out with the Heavens opening and as we gathered at Tropical
Bert’s it continued to pour down with dark skies. Several players dropped
out and a call to the course did not really help as they said it was raining
but should ease up by 10 o’clock, maybe, possibly. With the arrival at
Bert’s of Mick O’Meara and his positive attitude, we were reassured and
decided to give it a chance as it is very rare when it is pouring down in
Pattaya and we go to a course that we do not play.
The drive up there was in the pouring rain and when we arrived at Pattana it
was still raining but we decided to change and see how it went. On the first
Tee it was still raining but the fairways were, it seemed, holding up and so
we thought, “why not!”
Underway, playing B & C Nines, the fairways were wet and the greens also but
were playable, and after about 4 holes the rain started to ease and we could
put the umbrellas away, we hoped for good. The sky remained very dark for a
long time, then started to get lighter, until it became a really fine day.
So we battled on, finally getting around in a good mood.
The hot shower was welcome and then into cars and back to Bert’s where we
soon got the presentation under way. The victor with 36 points was our
perennial winner Mashi Kenata ahead of yours truly in second on 34 and John
Roberts in third on 33.
Near Pins went to the scribe, Al Laurie and Mark O’Meara. T.T.F.N.

More magic from Masa
IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
The Pattaya Golf Society travelled to Crystal Bay on Monday, 16th May,
and found the course in excellent condition for a stableford event with one
flight. The chosen nines were B and C and play got underway on time on the
relatively empty course.
Scores were generally better than average with a full field average return
of almost 34 points.
In third place with 36 points was Canadian golfer Gordon Everingham and
Scottish Ronnie Ramsay went one better with his 37 points giving him second
place. The winner, with his second consecutive forty point return was the
competent Japanese golfer Masanori Takano. All the hours of practice have
borne fruit as his latest two rounds show.
All the birdie ‘2’s came in the same playing group with Takeshi Hakozaki
taking the honours on C4 and Don Nellis and Larry Bland following suit on
C7. For Don it was justifiable reward for his superintending duties on the
course once again.
Tim Lazecki drew the short straw for the Booby Bevy as his eight - sixteen
split gave him the day’s lowest score. But it did not spoil his day on an
excellent golf course at Crystal Bay.
Success for Sumner
Cloudy skies and stormy weather drove the Pattaya Golf Society to a
brighter Greenwood on Wednesday, 18th May, to play a stableford competition
on the B and C nines which were in excellent condition as usual.
The moderate turnout saw a single flight compete under the stewardship of
Wichai Tananusorn who performed well enough on his favourite course to
occupy fourth place with 31 points. In third was Alan Pilkington enjoying
his swansong before an immediate return to the UK for a couple of months. In
second place was Larry Bland, once again peppering par with his consistency.
The winner was Pete Sumner with 37 points and it was good to see the English
golfer get the honour he deserves for his solid unspectacular efforts.
There were no birdie ‘2’s despite the greens being very consistent and the
Booby Bevy was shared by Irish newbies Sean Byrne and Joe Farmer for their
combined scores which would have given them a share of third place, were it
within the rules for the day. It gave them a fine taster of what golf with
the PGS is all about, fun with good friends on a quality golf course such as
Greenwood.
Aussie clean sweep denied
On Friday, 20th May the Pattaya Golf Society travelled to Green Valley
to play a stableford competition on the course which was in reasonable
condition despite recent scarifying on some fairways. The day stayed fine
and for the single flight there was the prospect of some good golf with the
return of some very competent golfing friends from Australia.
Sharing third place with 39 points were the day’s group leader Garry Hookey
and local golfer Wichai Tananusorn, Wichai spoiling the Aussie party by his
strong efforts, as the win was shared by Darren Norris and Tim Knight, both
with 42 points.
Darren also shared the ‘2’s pot with Wichai, who emulated the Aussie’s feat
on the fourth and added another on the sixteenth for good measure.
The Booby Bevy went inevitably to the returning Don McKinnon who conjured up
his usual brand of “apprentice” golf but this time also had the temerity to
upset a nest of hornets by hitting their tree and was thus painfully
rewarded by them. A chilled beer was the perfect medicine after a day out at
Green Valley.

Joe singing in the rain
PSC golf from the Three Sisters Bar
Joe St. Laurent, left, with
Arnold Van de Graaf.
It was a miserable day as the heavy cloud cover darkened the skies. The
rain held off until the back nine but luckily it wasn’t heavy. A few of the
golfers didn’t mind as they drank beers as the rain passed.
Paul Kraft started drinking earlier than most of us but it didn’t help his
game today. The winner today was Joe St. Laurent – he must be a mudder as
the rains did not bother him. Joe came in with a respectable 38 points to
win the day. Following Joe to the podium was Arnold Van de Graaf who came in
with 35 points.
Next week will be the end of the month competition. Our trophy is back with
all of last year’s winners now posted on the trophy. The winner next week
will have the honor to join the list of names stretching back many years.
Hope to see you there!

2nd Mike Phillips (11) 38pts
3rd Emmet White (12) 36pts
Friday, May 20, Green Valley – Stableford

top score coming in the second division from Ben Findon – a superb 43
points. Derek Mower was five back of Ben in second and Ian Colvill rounded
out the podium.
Robin Lennen tool A flight honours with another good round of 39 points to
edge Emmet White by one and Helmut Hebstreit was in third some three off the
pace.
To round out a great day for him, Ben Findon also had a ‘2’, as did Mike

Classy ‘Ludo’ rescues a point for United
Pattaya United striker
Ludovick Takam (20) shields the ball from a Khon Kaen defender during the
first half of their match at the Rajabhat University Stadium in
Mahasarakham, Sunday, May 22. (Photo/Ariyawat Nuamsawat)
Staff Reporters
Pattaya United were able to break their losing streak and
salvage a point at struggling Khon Kaen last weekend after Ludovick
equalized for the Dolphins in first half injury time.
The
hosts had raced into an early lead when Saiwut volleyed the ball home from
close range after Narit could only parry a fierce header from Rermrat onto
the crossbar. It brought great delight to the home fans who saw their team
get thrashed 6-1 by Chonburi FC the previous week, however their joy was to
be only short-lived as on the stroke of halftime Ludovick cleverly evaded
two defenders on the edge of the box before coolly slotting the ball past
the Khon Kaen goalkeeper.
Both teams had chances early in the game but it was Khon Kaen who were the
first to make the breakthrough in the 17th minute. From a left wing corner
Rermrat saw his bullet header knocked onto the woodwork by Narit and when
the ball dropped back into the six yard area Lao forward Saiwut was fastest
to react to volley the ball into the back of the net.
United pressed hard for an equalizer and it eventually came from a touch of
class by Ludovick Takam. The Cameroonian received the ball with his back to
goal on the edge of the area but with some nimble footwork and a silky turn
he was able to completely bamboozle the two defenders marking him and finish
clinically into the far corner of the net.
The second half saw fewer chances created but both teams could have snatched
all three points at the death only to see golden opportunities missed by
Ludovick for Pattaya and Sarawut Wichien for Khon Kaen.
The draw leaves United in tenth place in the league table but with a number
of clubs all within one or two points of each other the positions could
easily change before the mid-season break.
United’s next Premier League match is on Sunday May 29 when the Dolphins
play the big match of the season at home against Chonburi FC with the
kick-off scheduled for 6 p.m. Chonburi had no game this past weekend so they
will be eager to pick up maximum points against their close rivals in order
to keep the pressure on Buriram at the top of the league.

MBMG International League 2010/11 round up
Paul Frain
Pattaya City finished the MBMG premier league season in
second place behind Bangkok outfit The Londoner, who have now won the title
twice in three years. The Londoner were always up with the pack, but had a
couple of games in hand and it was either them or City that would be crowned
champions.
The standard of the league this past season was as high as it has ever been
and I am sure that it will get even better in 2011/12. City had a good
campaign but two bad results against third place Anatolia F.C. cost them the
title.
Pattaya City Res. had an excellent debut in division 2 finishing in 4th
place, and it could have been even better but the youngsters just lost their
way a little in the middle of the season. The coaching staff of David Brown,
Terry Wilcox, Brian Wilkins and Mo did a fine job which was borne out by the
performances of the players on the field.
Alan Mullberry with Chairman Rick Bryatt coached the first team who had to
settle for the runners up spot after winning the double last year.
The combination of all the coaching staff is very strong and Pattaya City
look set to remain as one of the leading clubs in the league.
The league hit troubled times before the start of the season and if it
wasn’t for just four men (all league club managers) who volunteered to run
the administration, there would not have been a league last season. The
eighteen clubs and more than 400 players who have taken part this past
season is a league record.
There have been some very difficult decisions and choices that had to be
made and thanks must be given to the four men for giving up their time and
attending the meetings in Bangkok. I know that the Pattaya City club would
also like to thank everybody at the Horseshoe Point complex for their help
and giving the team a good surface to play on and the use of their
facilities, whether it was a league match or a practice match.
The cup competition was cancelled until next season, so there could be two
cups to play for.
A big thank you goes to Mr. Bang and the referees who did a good job over
the season.
Also congratulations to FC Nova Pattaya on winning promotion to the top
flight after being crowned second division champs last season.
The summer break is here, but with Pattaya City work is now ongoing for the
next campaign and the question is, how many teams will City have next
season? Crafty Rick, as he is known throughout the football league, is hard
at work, and maybe there will be three teams or just the two! That is
something to ponder over the close season.

Yacht racing continues after Top of The Gulf 2011
The
fleet races downwind in the mid-May club series off Jomtien beach.
Following the highly successful annual Top of the Gulf
Sailing Regatta held in beginning of May, a slightly depleted keelboat and
multihull fleet did battle in the mid May Corsair Lewmar North Sails Club
racing.
With Saturday being mostly light shifty winds, and Sunday filling in to a
more constant 10-12 knots for much of the day, racing took place in two
areas; the bigger keelers and multihulls went on two island courses, while
the sportsboats including a large contingent of Platus raced on short
windward leeward courses, which are a short upwind and downwind leg, two
laps, then finish.
On both days, the keelboats had to follow in the newly renamed and repainted
Jeanneau 35 One Design, no longer called “Magic Roundabout” but now, simply,
“Magic”. Long courses with light winds requires a good understanding of
tides, wind changes and prevailing currents/waves; stringing years of
experience together, the experience of David Bell saw “Magic” taking wins
both days.
In the multihulls, Scott Galle is perhaps the most regular racer, and was
able to take 2 wins from Bob Garner in the new Corsair Dash trimaran, both
were helped by a number of sailors from Sattahip’s outstanding optimist
program sailing for the first time on the trimarans.
In the short courses, a number of teams from Bangkok’s Young Professionals
organisation increased the number of platu teams racing to 7 boats with 5
races. When the dust settled; the Shaw 650 “Pornstar” won 4 out of 5 races
on line, but once handicaps were applied, positions were reversed, with the
15 year old Don Whitcraft ably helming his Platu “Stingray” to 4 wins and 1
second place. In their first season racing with a new youth crew, this boat
will be one to watch out for in future regattas.
Both afternoons were supported by the sponsors. Corsair have now sold 18
trimarans in Thailand, ranging from the little Stings and Dash tris up to
the big 37 footer, all using the patented folding system that enables the
trimarans to sail fast on the water, but also be trailerable on land. North
Sails now have a full repair service in Thailand, improving the already
excellent infrastructure for sailors located in the Pattaya area.
Next racing for sailors includes Samui Regatta, the highlight season finale
for the Asian Grand Prix Series, and also club racing in mid June for
Pattaya sailors.
