Pattaya Sports Club Bowling League
Snow Bowler took three points from Café Kronborg with Aht
Johansson leading the way with a 527 series. They are now within one point
of first place Canada. Kran Nielsen bowled a 515 for Kronborg but it was not
enough to overcome a big handicap advantage for Snow Bowler.
![](pic/s1-PSC.jpg)
200 Bowlers: Ooy & Antero
First place Canada lost three points to Bavaria who also
have a big handicap advantage. Tue Pettae bowled a 523 series for Canada and
Antero Ronkainen bowled a 236 game and 509 series for Bavaria, not bad for
an old guy.
The USMC team bypassed Brother D moving from fifth place
to fourth after splitting their match with Green Tree with each team getting
two points. Joe Ferral led the USMC team with a 507 series.
Ooy Pluemkamon bowled a 232 game and 530 series to lead
VFW Post 9876 to a three point win over Brother D. Tui Amphanon came to life
for VFW with a 525 series.
Spare bowler Tum, a spin bowler, had a good day with games of 195, 186
and 185 for a 566 series. Brand bowled a 537 series in lanes 13 and 14.

Sea Fishing with the
KPK Food Services Club
![](pic/s2-Sea.jpg)
Happy anglers show off their catch and prizes.
Mike Gerrard
The break of dawn on Saturday, June 11 brought on the
worst fears for any sailor or fisherman: strong winds, with the threat of
rain. After picking up most of the crew from various points around town, we
headed off to Bangsaray village to embark on our journey for today.
Most of us were a little disappointed about the weather,
but one has to do what one has to do!
Our fears were soon abated because as we headed out to
sea the tides and the wind were such that there was not too much rocking of
the boat. The tides today were strangely very slow for most of the day,
which enabled all the crew to fish with small lines as well as having 4 or 5
big rigs out as well.
Only one casualty for a little bit of sickness, but he
soon recovered quickly to enjoy the day. Yes folks, it was not the girl.
Amazing!
We managed to get to a couple of the places where we have
experienced good catches before and today was to be no exception. As the
photo shows we had quite a nice assortment of cobia, pompano, queen fish and
a very good two, to two and a half kilo snapper. As is usual on these trips
we always catch good quantities of pladang, snapper and a few grouper.
It’s amazing how quick the weather can change out on the
ocean and at about 3.00 p.m. the dark clouds descended on us for about 30
minutes with a furious rainstorm. Not to worry, our captain set the ship
downwind and battened down all the hatches and not a soul suffered any
discomfort or wetness from the storm. Very soon it was back to the rods for
about an hour and then back to terra firma for that much needed amber nectar
to wash the salt water down.
Gary Ghyselenk caught the biggest fish of the day and was
the victor of the KPK Food Services award of a 500 baht voucher, with Joe
Cameron claiming second place with his catches of the queenfish and pompano,
and likewise received a KPK Food Services cap.
Our next scheduled trip is 9th July and there are a few
spaces available at this time of writing. Individuals can join any trip
(subject to availability) or anyone can charter the boat for their own
private party, any day of the week. I always come along to make sure
everyone is looked after on the trip.

Fishing link on the website of www.kpkfoods.com.

Mashi tops the forty pointers
PSC Golf from the Café Kronborg
Peter Blackburn
Monday, June 6, Khao Kheow C & A – Stableford
After a considerable amount of rain throughout the night
it was still raining as I walked across the road to the Kronborg at 0730hrs.
Usually when it is raining on the morning of a golf day there is at least
one golfer who rings up and cancels but this morning all 16 starters were
keen and optimistic and our judgment proved to be correct.
![](pic/s6-Kronborg-1.jpg)
‘The Admiral’, Mashi Kaneta & Matthias Schumm.
We welcomed back Niels Hansen from Denmark, Joe
Vanderwegen from Belgium and newcomers Matthias Schumm and Karl Beter from
Austria. Departing the Kronny at 0815hrs on the dot we were checking in at
the classy Khao Kheow just 43 minutes later, having driven through showers
for most of the way but the weather looked promising.
As is the norm of late we were able to tee off at our
leisure and the first 4-ball got away at 0923hrs in light drizzle and this
continued for a few holes before becoming fine but steamy. The condition of
the golf course was terrific, as is to be expected, and although having
received much rain of late everything was draining quite well but we soon
discovered not to expect any run on the fairways. The greens were in fine
condition and a pleasure to putt on although on some greens it was a must to
be putting from below the hole.
![](pic/s6-Kronborg-2.jpg)
Paul Avery.
Due to the very high humidity it was necessary to take
several lengthy drink breaks but still completed our round in the good time
of four hours & twenty minutes.
After posting some fairly ordinary scores of late Mashi
Kaneta returned to form and won the A Flight with a fine 42 points, 2 points
ahead of Paul Avery in second place. Normally a sub-par round of 71 off the
stick would be rewarded with a win but off his 1 handicap Mike Allidi had to
settle for third place – Well done to Mike for a fine round. Yours truly
managed to overcome having been “chopped” 2 strokes by the Handicapper on
the weekend and finished fourth on 35 points.
Our newcomers from Austria took out the first two spots
in B Flight with Matthias Schumm winning with 40 points, a massive 9 points
ahead of his mate Karl Beter. ‘The Admiral’ finished in third spot with 30
points and Mick O’Connor 1 point further back in fourth place.
A Flight (0-20)
1st Mashi Kaneta (11) 42pts
2nd Paul Avery (10) 40pts
3rd Mike Allidi (1) 38pts
4th Peter Blackburn (13) 35pts
B Flight (21+)
1st Matthias Schumm (30) 40pts
2nd Karl Beter (30) 31pts
3rd Dave Richardson (22) 30pts
4th Mick O’Connor (21) 29pts
Long Putt: Dave Richardson
German Volker Buley is certainly enjoying his holiday in
Pattaya as usual but is yet to find some form on the golf course as he once
more won the Compass Cap and wore it briefly with his usual smile – a great
sport this guy!
Thursday, June 9, Bangpakong – Stableford
It was of no surprise to see a very good field of
nineteen golfers signed up for the trip to Bankpakong as it is quite some
time that we had played there and we were all looking forward to
experiencing the marvelous facilities again.
We welcomed back the PSC Treasurer Graham Buckingham from
his 3 week trip back to the U.K. and farewelled Matthias Schumm and Karl
Beter who are shortly returning to Austria after their brief stay in
Pattaya.
Leaving the Kronny a touch before 0815hrs we arrived at
the course just one hour later and although it appeared to be fairly busy,
as is to be expected on a Sports Day, our first group teed off 10 minutes
ahead of schedule at 0950hrs.
The weather was sensational as was the golf course and it
wasn’t long before I had my camera out to snap some pics of the wonderful
scenery. It really was a picture with well kept fairways and greens and of
course one paid the penalty of straying off the fairway with the first cut
being just about the longest around. We strolled around the front nine in
just over two hours and after a total of three lengthy stops for drinks the
round was completed in four hours and twenty-five minutes.
There were some good scores in A Flight with Aussie Paul
Avery winning with 38 points on a count-back from Daryl Evans. Takeshi
Hakozaki finished third one point further back with Niels Hansen a shot
behind him on 36 points.
Two of my playing partners had a very good tussle all day
in B Flight with ‘The Admiral’ taking out first place on a count-back with
38 points from the “shattered” Mick O’Connor who unfortunately “wiped” the
last hole even with the advantage of 2 shots. Gordon Clegg at last found a
bit of form to finish third with 34 points and one shot further back the
departing Matthias Schumm managed to grab fourth place on a count-back from
Allan Traneker.
A Flight (0-20)
1st Paul Avery (10) 38pts
2nd Daryl Evans (20 38pts
3rd Takeshi Hakozaki (13) 37pts
4th Niels Hansen (13) 36pts
B Flight (21+)
1st Dave Richardson (22) 38 points
2nd Mick O’Connor (21) 38 points
3rd Gordon Clegg (27) 34 points
4th Matthias Schumm (28) 33 points
Long Putts: Ken Bernek, Matthias Schumm
Graham Buckingham was fearful that he had won the Compass Cap after an
indifferent round but he was saved by Karl Beter who managed to finish his
brief stay with us by at least winning something! Hopefully Deefa the Dog
will return next week but I fear without his Master, Hunter who is heading
north again for more convalescing.

Scribe’s form continues
to improve
Phoenix Tuesday Golf Group
Mike Gerrard.
OK, I will not dwell on the victor too much this week,
one or two are getting suspicious. It is now three weeks on the trot yours
truly has won the day, but with only average results - this week 37 points
was sufficient to claim top spot with 36 to my playing opponent today, Eamon
Murtagh, and ‘Big’ John Bartley coming in a close third with 35 points.
So, if you guys want to see another name at the top next
week you had better go out and practice a little to return better scores!
Only two near pins today with John Bartley winning one
and the other not claimed, which was put into the lucky draw pot.
Winners of four lucky draws today were, Mike Wing, Shaun
Merriman, Stuart Gordon and Terry Vicary. Only two were left who did not win
at the presentation, but they did get a free drink.
We are enjoying quite a good-turn out at this time of the
year, so if you would like to try and join us I will describe a few of the
general rules of the group. Please note that we do close the list at 6
groups.
Basically we are men only group and play every week on
Tuesday’s and Friday’s at Phoenix Golf Club at approximately 12.00 noon each
day. Every player plays from the white tees.
Most of our players are members of the PSC and that is
the main handicap list we work to. However, all other official handicaps,
including a current (no more than 3 months old) IPGC or other CONGU overseas
handicap is accepted. We work to PSC and local course rules, along with the
USGA and R&A rules.
Anyone without a handicap is welcome to play, but for
technical prizes only. The only stipulation to that statement is that anyone
who is not a regular and reasonable player will feel out of place in our
group.
We play stableford competition most weeks but the last
Tuesday of the month is a stroke play round with special prizes donated by
Trattoria Italiana and KPK Food Services Ltd., plus all the other prizes.
We try to share the spoils in small quantities to as many
players each game, as is our usual policy on Tuesday’s.
Our other sponsor The Relax Bar donates the first round
of drinks at a reduced rate so as to give every player who returns to the
presentation a free drink out of the days takings. The Relax Bar also donate
a free drink and a free massage every week as Lucky Draw prizes.
For further information regarding golf and sea fishing,
contact me (Mike) on 087 091 7565.

Geoff marks his return with a win at Emerald
The Backyard Golf Society
![](pic/s8-Backyard.jpg)
Geoff, center, celebrates his win with the staff at Happy
Bar 2.
After dwindling numbers the last two weeks it was nice to
get back to serious competition between the Backyard boys at Emerald Golf
Course. We have said goodbye to John Mac (who’s colorful language will be
missed by all) and welcomed back Geoff and Russell.
With the sanding of the greens on the back 9 holes it
made for a very quiet golf course so we got away early and had a nice
leisurely round. Back in the club house for prize giving and Geoff was
pleasantly surprised after he found out he had won with 35 points. Not bad
for a guy who has not picked up a club for two and a half months.
No one managed to hit the green for the nearest the pin
prize and the skin results were as follows: Geoff (7), Terry C (5), Neville
(3), Martyn (2), and one rollover for next week.
As usual it was down to Ban Chang for a few beers and best of luck to the
2 new ventures YoYo and Happy Bar 2 from all the boys at the Backyard Golf
Society.

Kaneta claims top spot at PSC monthly
PSC 106th Member’s Monthly Golf Tournament
This month we ventured to Rayong Country Club on Friday,
June 10, for the 106th Pattaya Sports Club member’s golf tournament. Many
thanks to the management for accommodating our group on short notice and
also for preparing the course, the best condition it has been in quite some
time. We did play ‘lift, clean and place’ as there are still a few spots
where it is only fair. The course played fair for all and there were quite a
few good scores returned.
![](pic/s9-PSC-1.jpg)
Low Gross winner Mashi Kaneta, left, with the PSC Golf Chairman Joe
Mooneyham.
In form Mashi Kaneta topped the standings with a round of
84 to take out the low gross award. He was followed in by Peter Blackburn
just the one shot behind who took top honours in the A Flight with a net 72
off his 13 Handicap.
Playing stableford in the B Flight, Eddie Beilby was top
dog today but only on count-back over Jack Butler after both came in with 38
points, Eddie’s back nine of 20 edging Jack’s by one.
Gordon Clegg captured first place in C Flight with 34
points and Noi Emmerson went one better with 35 to take out the Ladies
division on count-back over Rotjana Neal.
![](pic/s9-PSC-2.jpg)
Peter Blackburn, right, was the winner of the A Flight.
After the golf, Lewinski’s was the ever popular choice
for the presentation with it offering great food, affordable drinks and
being easy to get to. Thank you very big to all the staff there!
Lucky draws were received by all players and thanks go to
PSC Golf Chairman Joe Mooneyham and Social Chairman Nigel Cannon for another
well organized event.
![](pic/s9-PSC-3.jpg)
Eddie Beilby, left, accepts his prize from the Golf Chairman.
Don’t forget - next month we will play out Member’s

Oye rules the roost at Pattaya C.C.
PSC golf from The Three Sister’s Bar
![](pic/s10-Three933.jpg)
Oye St. Laurent, left, with Chano Galvano.
Oh where have all the brave golfers gone? Sure it was raining cats and dogs
in Pattaya but that is no reason to hear the rain and rollover in bed. Those
stalwart heroes who threw themselves against the storm were pleasantly
surprised to arrive at the Pattaya Country Club this past 8th of June to see
a beautiful rainbow and clear skies. Carts were limited to the cart path or
the rough except for the “Yellow Flag Boys”. Actually the fairways and
greens were very dry except for one wet spot on hole #13.
Returning to Caddy Shack II, it was necessary to roust out our acting
cook, Sus Ige, who hastily whipped up some hot dogs. Card wise it was a
no-brainer with Oye St. Laurent topping out with a 36 points followed by
Chano Galvano with a 33. The remaining 4 players didn’t fare too well.”
Walkley tames the beast
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar
Monday, June 6,
Burapha - Stableford
Well we copped the same weather as last Friday; rain
nearly all the way to the course then almost nothing for the round of
golf. Playing A and B off the blues was to put it mildly very difficult
and the greens were indifferent to say the least. However, the scores
were pretty good in most cases.
![](pic/s11-Outback-2.jpg)
Friday’s top scorer & Div A winner, Owen Walkley, left, with runner
up Ed Wyckoff.
It was welcome to some Aussie friends again today
(Dave and Richard Barwick and the boys) who played with the Outback at
Pattaya C.C. on the 8th June last year and enjoyed
themselves immensely as they did today, with one or two of them
featuring in the prizes.
Rosco also had a couple of mates over from Karratha,
Al and Jim; they were in the first group and there was nothing in the
way, leaving them with just a nice and easy four hour round.
Paul Bourke had a great round scoring 39 points to
win Div A by two from Pete Stonebridge and the Capt’ on 36, with Dave
Barwick back in fourth with 35. His brother, Richard, won Div B with a
fine 37 points, three clear of one of their mates, Tony (34), who edged
out one of the regular Outbackers, Jerry, also with 34.
![](pic/s11-Outback-1.jpg)
Dave Barwick, front right, and his mates from Down-under pose for a
photo at Burapha.
For the record there were 25 Outbackers today and a
‘jackpot 2’ from John Cunningham plus of course a few, “Oh hell I missed
a 3 footer” and so on but we only pay if they go in.
Div A (0 -18)
1st Paul Bourke (11) 39pts
2nd Peter Stonebridge (15)

3rd Bob Philp (9) 36pts
4th Dave Barwick (18) 35pts
Div B (19+)br>

3rd Jeremy Quin (19) 34pts
4th Ivan Plunkett (21) 29pts
Tuesday, June 7, Pattaya C.C. - Stableford/p>
After the reported heavy going on Monday, the course
had dried out considerably, although carts were not allowed on the
fairway, thus signalling the winter rule of ‘pick, clean and place’ for
balls on the fairway or closely mown grass.
Fourteen players today and with only three
indifferent greens, it wasn’t a bad day’s golf, even though the scoring
was nothing to write home about. Every dog has his day and today was
David’s with the top score of 36 points, just one point ahead of another
David, Earthrowl, who had 35 for second spot. The minor places were
filled by Sid Ottaway and Geoff Moodie, both with 34, Sid getting the
nod on count-back.
General Jack, having his first game since the
gruelling 5 consecutive days golf in Bintan, Indonesia, couldn’t do much
right but he did get the only ‘2’.
1st David Day (15) 36pts
2nd David Earthrowl (20) 35pts
3rd Sid Ottaway (23) 34pts
4th Geoff Moodie (24) 34pts
Bangpra Weds 8th June
Just a small field of 10 but what a day out for Paul
Greenaway, 39 points off his new handicap of 12, certainly a great round
of golf around this course and winning by a clear margin of 5 points
over his good mate Paul Bourke on 34. Suzi Lawton, our organiser for the
day, came third with 33 points and fourth was Brian Maddox on 30.
The greens were the topic of conversation back at the
bar, them being so slippery if you were above the hole it was a case of
hit it with the shadow of the putter.
There was another ‘jackpot 2’, the third this week in
as many days, this one going to the man of the moment, Paul Greenaway.
1st Paul Greenaway (12) 39pts
2nd Paul Bourke (11) 34pts
3rd Suzi Lawton (17) 33pts
Friday, June 10, Khao Kheow - Stableford
The eight groups (31 Outbackers) played the C and A
loops in what would have normally been a great day at the office, if the
starter hadn’t put a 5-ball walking in front of our groups, especially
as they were 30 minutes late for their tee time. Even though the course
was in fantastic condition, it (the 5-ball) thoroughly spoilt the day,
particularly for our first group, the 3-ball of Pottsy, Gus and Ricky;
sorry guys, you really got the blunt end of the wedge.
Khao Kheow really does a number on most who play it,
it is a great golf course but nobody ever gives it a going over, with
the exception today of Owen Walkley, who fired an amazing 40 points,
five clear of Ed Wyckoff, on a very respectable 35. Div B went to Bob
Lindborg with 34 points, which is also very acceptable round here and
Brian Maddox was second on 30.
Congratulations to Ed Wyckoff, who had a “jackpot 2”,
making the fourth this week in as many outings; joining John
Cunningham’s on Monday at Burapha, Jack Moseley’s on Tuesday at Pattaya
C.C. and Paul Greenaway’s at Bangpra on Wednesday.
Div A (0-18)
1st Owen Walkley (11) 40pts

1st Mike Phillips 36pts
2nd Robin Lennon 34pts
3rd Grieg Richie 34pts

always tough Treasure Hill course as the Caddyshack golfers made the long
trip there was the first outing of the week.
Robin Lennon snatched second place off Grieg Richie on
count-back, both on 34 points, and Paul Phillips completed the podium on 31.
Friday, June 10,

Vickers vanquishes the field
PSC golf from The Fairways Golf Society
Monday, June 6, Bangpra –
Stableford
Only one write-up this week due to the scribe having time
off. We had another great escape with the weather as it was raining for two
hours before we departed on Monday and during the entire journey to the
course. Luckily we had a late tee time and the rain stopped about 10 minutes
before we were due to tee off and it held off for the rest of the day.
Billy Vickers maintained his recent return to form with
another sub-par round of 38 points to take the honours. He was chased home
by Frank Filiyia with a fine round of 37 points and third and fourth places
were decided on a front six count-back.
Near pins went to Ken Meek, Tony Duthie, Billy Vickers
and George Hayes.
1st Billy Vickers (12) 38pts
2nd Frank Filiyia (19) 37pts
3rd George Hayes (21) 32pts
4th Ken Meek (24) 32pts

Jeff returns to form
PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside
Tuesday, June 7, Rayong C.C.
– Stableford
Tuesday this week saw us visit Rayong Country Club where
until we arrived customers were thin on the ground. All the courses we visit
seem to be struggling for players, a sign of the times for sure. Our numbers
have been down as well with regulars returning home for northern summers,
illness also taking toll, get well Derek.
![](pic/s14-Mulligans.jpg)
Ray & Jimmy arrive back at Mulligans after Tuesday’s
round.
The scores were not great, however Jeff Wylie (6) showed
some glimpses of form to return 35 points while recent podium monopoliser,
Ray Spence (16), did enough to secure second spot with 28 points. Only Jeff
managed to hit the near pins although others went close on occasions.
Thursday, June 9, Crystal Bay – Skins
Thursday we travelled to Crystal Bay, where we played A &
B combination. The course again was sparsely supported, but it was in quite
good condition and a pleasure to play. We had a skins competition only due
to lack of numbers but it was still a very enjoyable day of golf.
Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf on Tuesday & Thursday, with
presentation at the course Tuesday and Mulligans Lakeside hosting on
Thursdays. Call 089 094 1841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you
there, cheers & good golfing!

Khao Kheow proves extra tough in the wet
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
![](pic/s15-Bert%20golf.jpg)
The top three at Khao Kheow pose for a photo with one of
Bert’s finest.
Derek Brook
Tuesday, June 7, Khao Kheow – Stableford
As is usual these days it was a wet morning, but
promising to dry up and get really humid later. So off we went to Khao
Kheow, and the first non surprise was that carts were not allowed off the
cart path. Still, we are really tough and can take any obstacle in our path,
so off we went on the C & A Nines.
The course as expected was very wet, so it was ‘lift,
clean and place’ on the fairways as the ball would, and did, pick up a lot
of mud. We also as expected, and got, little run so the golf was very
difficult. The greens were very slow also and the ball did not reach the
hole in the manner we expect on this course.
Round over we were soon showered, had a quick bite in the
restaurant and were on our way back to Bert’s. At Bert’s the results were
read out, and as expected the scores were not outstanding. The winner, with
35 points, on count-back was Joel Flor with Gordon Clegg in second. In third
place was the scribe with 34 points on count-back over Mashi Kaneta in
fourth.
Near Pins went to Walter Bachli, Henry Wong, Mike O’Brien
and Andre Van Dyk.
We then had a couple more drinks and the night continued. T.T.F.N.

‘The donkey’ wears a tutu +2
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s
Sunday, May 15, Green Valley
- Stableford
A Flight
1st Ian Halfpenny (13) 39pts
2nd Gareth Gill (9) 39pts
B Flight
1st Lou Szigligeti (19) 40pts
2nd Colin Davis (16) 38pts
Near Pins: No 4 Colin Davis, No 9 Jack Grindvold, No
12 Gareth Gill, No 16 Ian Halfpenny.
Lewis Szigligeti, from the rules committee of the
peninsular Golf and Social Society of Western Oz, left the extreme city
by the sea with a bang as his junior flight 40 points on the Sunday
shortened Green Valley outdistanced the field by on clear stroke! Lewis
will be missed, not only because he and his mates were a grand addition
to the society but also because this scribe had just mastered the
spelling of his name.
![](pic/s17-TR%20golf.jpg)
Sunday’s A Flight runner up Gareth Gill, left, with B
Flight winner Lou Szigligeti.
‘The donkey’, who featured in last week’s missive
with his red hot putting, took the silver a stroke back, his 39 points
included three 2’s but it still needs a bit more fine tuning as he
missed a two footer - hence the headline Tutu and 2.
Skipping up to the big boys flight saw another
get-away boy take the honors, Ian ‘loose change’ Halfpenny waved goodbye
as he returned to Vietnam for now, beating Gareth ‘Ralphy’ Gill on
count-back 18/13 - 18/11 on the inward nine.
Ian left his winnings in the capable hands of the
‘Eagle’ and ‘One Ball’, needless to say there won’t be much change left
on his return. Cheers Ian!
Along with Colin’s three 2’s were Gareth Gill, Mark
Wood and Jack Grindvold.
Tuesday, June 7, Khao Kheow - Stableford
1st Peter Hynard (14) 35pts
2nd Morten Esseth (18) 29pts
A relatively modest group, attributed to the low
season, took on the favorite of many, Khao Kheow. On a day when no
player broke par the nearest player to the feat was Peter Hynard who
took the day’s honours with 35 points and fired the only ‘2’ of the day.
Morten Esseth made his weekly trip to the pay window
with a count-back victory over the unlucky Jan ‘the quite one’ Eriksen
for second, both on 29 points.
Wednesday, June 8, Bangpra - Stableford
1st Ed Wyckoff (11) 38pts
2nd Ed Delaney (30) 35pts
3rd Pierre Bietry (14) 34pts
Wily Ed Wyckoff was the only player to solve the
Bangpra riddle on this day as he led the gang home through the marauding
monkeys as he stood alone, the only competitor under par. In fact Ed’s
38 points was three clear of Ed Delaney. Chaten ‘the Raja’ Patel, was
the unlucky victim of ‘Captain’ Pierre’s’ count-back.
Peter ‘Don O’corleone’ Henshaw slotted home the only
‘2’ of the day.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi 1, Beach Road Soi
13/3 near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in
and add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport
is provided.

Min takes one Moore
Golf from the Travellers Rest
Barry Hooper
Sorry about the play on words. Last week I happily
reported on a fine first win for Min Moore. Well she has done it again, this
time with a 36 pointer at Burapha on Thursday and in fine style. There seems
to be no stopping her. Well done Min - long may it continue!
The other people making the headlines this week were
Norman Cheetham with his double win, albeit nearly a week apart. The first
time was at Greenwood on Sat 4th with 35 points and
then again at Chrystal Bay on Friday 10th with 36, and
the other is Daryl Ottoway with his 40 point score for the win at Bangpra on
Monday the 6th.
The other thing you will notice this week for anyone who
regularly reads my reports is the complete departure from the normal
schedule of play at the TRGG to Saturday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I am
informed that this is because they are trying to supply a bigger selection
of courses and at the best prices available. So apologies to anyone that
read the proposed schedule of play in the press and was misinformed. We do
however always state that it is subject to change. I am trying to obtain a
new up to date listing and will pass this to the press as soon as possible.
I must also apologise for a somewhat truncated report
this week. I have been hit by the computer gremlins and anyone who uses one
these days will know just what that is like I am sure. Normal service
resumed soon I hope.

Eastern Star back on the horizon
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Friday, June 10, Eastern star – Stableford
On Monday we left Siam Cats under some heavy drizzle and
as we approached Plutaluang the skies in the distance were dismal. As we
turned into the course by the lighthouse the fairways were saturated with
water and as we all met up in the clubhouse prior to our 10.00am tee off the
rain had eased but we all agreed there was no point playing here today.
Back to Eastern Star on Friday after a three week absence
due to renovations to the greens, and the main consensus was that there was
an improvement on the front nine but it is still early days here yet; there
still needs to be more work done on all of the course over the next few
weeks to make it acceptable to the golfers in the region, but for 400 baht a
round there were no complaints.
There were two divisions out today and the cut was 1-19
in division 1 and 20+ in division 2. The best score of the day was 36 points
recorded by Lee Casey to win division 2. Joe Kubon was second on 33 and the
organizer third with 30.
Swedish boy Mikael Andersson was the top player in
division 1 with 32 points, Harry Riley was second two points behind and
Brian Blackford took third with 29.

‘Dolphins’ slide continues after defeat to Muang Thong

Premier League fixture at the Yamaha Stadium in Bangkok, Sunday, June 12.

Staff reporters
Pattaya United players and officials will be left with
much to contemplate over the mid-season mini-break after the ‘Dolphins’
slipped to their seventh defeat of the current campaign with a 2-0 loss at
defending champions Muang Thong United last Sunday. Indeed one has to go all
the way back to the middle of April to recall United’s last win in the
league, at home against Sri Racha FC, when it seemed there was a huge gulf
in class between the neighboring teams. After United’s recent dismal run of
results, however, the gap now stands at just five points between the
‘Dolphins’ and third off bottom Sri Racha.
United took on Muang Thong in the intimidating atmosphere
of the Yamaha Stadium last Sunday and fell behind as early as the 18th
minute when their defence failed to deal with a long through ball from the
Muang Thong half of the field, and striker Teerasil Dangda sprinted clear to
knock the ball wide of goalkeeper Wichan and into the empty net to give the
hosts the lead.
Pattaya were able to able to keep the home team from
adding to the score until the 61st minute when Wichan raced off his line to
deny one of the Muang Thong forwards but could only proceed to pull him down
in the area, leading to a penalty kick. Ivory Coast forward Dagno Siaka
strode up to take the kick and calmly slotted it past Wichan to secure all
three points for the resurgent champions.
All the Premier League teams will now take a two week
hiatus and Pattaya United will return to league action on Saturday July 2,
with an away fixture at high flying Bangkok Glass.
There was at least some good news for United fans last
week with the announcement that the club is set to return to its home
stadium at Nongprue Field from August 14 onwards. United are due to take on
TOT SC on that date and it is anticipated that the revamped stadium will be
ready to play host to the fixture.
Meanwhile, at the top of the league last weekend Buriram
PEA continued their relentless march toward championship glory with a 5-0
thrashing of Chiang Rai United. Buriram’s nearest rivals Chonburi FC slipped
to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of a resurgent Bangkok Glass to leave them ten
points off the pace.
Chonburi’s next fixture is on July 3 away at Thai Port FC while
struggling Sri Racha will take a trip to Samut Songkram on July 2.

Pattaya Cricket Club
crowned T20 champions
![](pic/s29-Cricket.jpg)
The Pattaya Cricket Club team celebrate their victory in
the Southerners T20 tournament.
Pattaya Cricket Club convincingly beat Asia United by 34
runs in the final of the 2011 Southerners T20 competition last weekend.
Pattaya C.C. progressed to the final of the tournament on the back of 3 wins
in the group stage of the competition, including an impressive victory
against the Southerners C.C. who had previously never been beaten in the
tournament’s history.
Pattaya C.C.’s strength had been their batting, they had
amassed over 550 runs and contained the highest run scorer of the tournament
–Mazhar in the team. However, Saturday’s final was the turn of the bowlers
and fielders with an outstanding all round performance to restrict Asia
United to only 103 runs off the 20 overs.
Tensions had been running high before the game, due to
some good natured cybernet banter. Pattaya claimed its man of the match in
the previous game -Hansie - would hit 3 sixes off the first 3 balls he faced
after a warm-up consisting of 3 cigarettes and a large portion of chicken
balti. This proved to fire up Asia United as they won the toss and elected
to field.
Pattaya C.C. got off to a solid start with captain Sunny
and the evergreen John G hitting some beautiful shots off some excellent
Asia United bowling, to progress to 32 before the first wicket went down.
That brought the arrival of Mazhar to the crease, who was yet to get out in
the tournament having scored over 100 runs in the process.
United were ecstatic in getting his wicket and they saw a
chance to squeeze the Pattaya innings. United felt they had the momentum and
the situation in the middle became heated. Pattaya C.C.’s batting remained
strong, with every player in the team contributing a useful amount of runs,
without one player dominating. Tauseef top scored with 34, including some
monster sixes as Pattaya C.C. closed on a total of 137.
This total was Pattaya’s smallest of the tournament by
some 60 runs but this could be credited to the slow outfield and some superb
bowling and fielding from Asia United.
Pattaya C.C. needed a good, tight start with the ball and
that came in the form of Yasir, Shaan and Andy Emery, who restricted United
to 28 for 2 from the first 7 overs. This increased the pressure on the
batsmen, but United’s Asif led a counter attack smashing a few devastating
blows with his bat. Just as Asif was bringing the game back in the balance,
star bowler Usman knocked his middle stump out of the ground. Pattaya then
turned the screw with a great catch from Dev and outstanding wicket-keeping
from captain Sunny. It was left to fast bowler Janu to claim the last two
victims.
It ended up a convincing win in which every member of the side
contributed and gave Pattaya Cricket Club their second piece of silverware
this season.

Strong arm tactics lead the way
![](pic/s30-Arm-1.jpg)

winners and runners-up pose for a group photo.
Pratchaya Kerdthong
Shoppers and tourists at the Royal Garden Plaza were
treated to Pattaya’s very own version of ‘arm wars’ last Saturday as the 8th
Annual Pattaya International Arm Wrestling Championships were staged on the
ground floor of the Beach Road shopping mall.
Strongmen (and ladies) from Israel, Australia, Turkey,
Russia, Japan, USA, and the UK, as well as hosts Thailand, ensured that
there was an international flair to the event but it was the home nation
that bagged all the major honours, with Prasart Kalayanitikul, Ronachai
Jitjamnong and Withaya Meemui topping the three weight divisions in the
men’s field (75kg, 76-85kg, and 86-95kg) and Yaowaluk Saenboonsiri
vanquishing all before her in the ladies class.
![](pic/s30-Arm-2.jpg)
Yaowaluk Saenboonsiri, left, from Chonburi was the winner of the female
category.
The winners in all categories received prize money of
15,000 baht and trophies, which were presented by the deputy director of
Tourism Authority of Thailand Pattaya office, Akaravit Thepasit, and Royal
Garden Plaza general manager Somporn Naksuetrong.
In addition to the main four prizes there was also a special award of
2,000 baht given to a particularly chiselled Indonesian arm wrestler who was
adjudged to be ‘Mr. Perfect Muscle Man’.

“Won Ma Rang” skippered by Kevin Whitcraft speeds downwind on
Day 3 of the Koh Samui Regatta 2011.
Story by Peter Cummins
Photos: Anne Sophie Maestracci-samuipics.com
![](pic/petercummins.jpg)
Our Eastern Seaboard sailors scored very well in the
highly-competitive international fleet of 30 craft which participated in the
just-completed 10th Sawadee.com Regatta Samui, sailed off
Chaweng Beach, the main focus area of the beautiful tropical island.
Leader of the pack was Ocean Marina’s Kirati Assakul (Nim)
who helmed his gigantic catamaran, “Bandara Sonic” into first place in the
Multihull Racing Class, one of the four divisions in the regatta. Radab
Kanchanavanit, sailing “KT-ZIMCO Cedar Swan”, who suffered gear failure
eliminating him from the winner’s circle, finished fourth in this class
Jean Rheault, “Souay1” and Peter Herning, “Kirifiki”, sailing
out of the Ocean Marina, as well, finished second and third respectively in the
IRC 2/Cruising Class, while former Royal Varuna YC Commodore, Kevin Whitcraft,
“Won Ma Rang”, was sixth in the IRC One.
This year’s sailing of the 2011 Samui Sawadee.com Regatta
took place at the tropical island resort from 30 May through 04 June. Raced in
the beautiful waters surrounding Samui, the Regatta base for the 10th
successive year was the Centara Grand Beach Resort, located at the heart of the
action, Samui’s Chaweng Beach.
Like many major events that attract top global brands, the
regatta has evolved over the past decade into a festival-long maritime week.
Although centered around exciting yacht-racing action, sailing the regatta week
has developed into a leading life-style event: fashion, fine dining, music
festivals, exotic parties and luxury property events, add to what has become a
strategic choice for many of Asia’s marketing professionals looking for brand
promotion via the marine sector.
![](pic/s31-Samui-4.jpg)
“Evolution Racing” heads for the first marker buoy.
Martin Heiniger, the General Manager of the Centara Resort,
basically spoke for all the supporters, noting that the Centara Group has been
the administrative centre for the event since 2001 and Martin sees the strategic
relationship between the resort and the regatta’s organizing team. As an
organization that wants its hotel properties to be recognized as some of the
best in the world, Martin pointed out that “association with the regatta fits
perfectly with our other marketing tactics”.
Not only do occupation rates surge during the week, Martin
added, “but the majority of the hundreds of participants, supporters and regatta
organizers are able to experience our resort’s – and the island’s other venues
and facilities - first hand, with many often returning”, Martin concluded.
Bangkok- based entrepreneur Callum Laing took over management
of the Regatta in 2008, focusing on these extra-sailing activities noted above.
![](pic/s31-Samui-5.jpg)
“Bandara Sonic” (left) helmed by Ocean Marina’s Kirati Assakul (Nim) tacks
alongside “Cedar Swan” (center of picture) in the multihull race.
“For us as organizers”, said Callum during regatta week, “the
event is about what we can provide to all who come to benefit from the brilliant
maritime and social milieu abounding during regatta week.”
To further their aims, Callum pointed out that many
co-sponsors fly in guests to experience all that the regatta has to offer, for
it (the regatta) is positioned just at the right level to be appeal to
lifestyles, F&B, travel and entertainment.
“We know that we have rationalized a sponsorship model that
works for many organizations”, he concluded.
![](pic/s31-Samui-6.jpg)
The Optimist fleet heads for home.
Bill Gasson, the original joint-founder of Thailand’s great
regattas – the Phuket King’s Cup, the Koh Samui event and the recently-held Top
of the Gulf - looks very positively on the sailing scene in Thailand, especially
among the juniors. He sees a “sailing triangle” in the Northern Gulf: Koh Samui,
Hua Hin and Jomtien-Pattaya and, with his recent experience with the Optimist
fleet at the Ocean Marina, anticipates that many of these juniors will graduate
to fill the more senior ranks in future.
Samui’s own Optimist fleet, spurred on by John Stall –
co-founder of the Samui regatta with Bill - and Frankie Brancaccio managed a
great Optimist “side-show” for the Samui juniors. Although not racing in the
regatta proper, the Samui children had their own event.
With a Thai teenager, Sattahip girl Noppakao Poonpat, as the
first-ever Optimist World Champion, enthusiasm among the Samui juniors is high,
raised further by a Samui coastal race for the juniors last month and their
participation in the recently-held Top of the Gulf Regatta.
One of the features of the racing, was a clash – not of the
Titans – but of the Commodores, as former Commodore of the Cruising Yacht Club
of Australia, Matt Allan and former Commodore of the Royal Varuna Yacht Club,
Kevin Whitcraft, had, could one say, a slight entanglement on the starting line.
The latter was disqualified at the subsequent protest hearing and the former was
obliged to head for shore, with some gear damage, missing two starts.
![](pic/s31-Samui-7.jpg)
“Elektra” from Hong Kong won the IRC 1 class. (Photo/Duncan
Worthington)
However, the real “Clash of the Titans” continued in the
Racing Class, where erstwhile leader, UAR’s “Team Premier”, helmed by Johannes
Waimer, held on to a narrow lead, from a determined Neil Pryde, the Hong
Kong-based New Zealander who closed in, to finally win the Racing Class, with
Johannes just scant points behind.
On the mid-Regatta ‘Lay Day’ many forsook the gulf for their
golf, at the Santiburi Golf Club, while the International School of Samui and an
army of volunteers, embarked on a beach clean-up. It was, indeed, a fine example
of civic responsibility that could well be emulated at numerous resorts around
the Kingdom which are suffering from environmental degradation and pollution.
The last day of the Sawadee.com Regatta Samui had a classic
tropical island ambience, a 10-12 knot south-westerly, smooth seas and a great
air of excitement. Hong Kong New Zealander Neil Pryde, who had relentlessly
pursued the erstwhile leader of the Racing Class, Johannes Waimer during the
week, had his reward when, winning the last three races of the 10 sailed, he
brought his Welbourn 52 “Hi Fi” into first place on 13 points. UAE-registered
Transpac 52, “Team Premier” had to settle into second place (18).
Hong Kong Transpac 52 “Freefire”, skippered by Sam Chan (26),
was third, one point clear of 2010 regatta champion, Aussie Ray Roberts, with
Hong Kong Frank Pong’s Reichel Pugh maxi “Jelik ll (Boracay)”, fifth on 46
points.
Ray Roberts had his consolation by being awarded the Asian
Yachting’s Grand Prix as the Sailor of the Year, 2011-2012, with AY’s Captain
Marty presenting the elegant, embroidered jacket and, of course, the permanent
trophy filled with champagne.
Thirty craft, from some nine countries and divided into four
classes sailed off Samui’s Chaweng Beach for the past week, and, mostly, it was
a typical “tropical island” scenario: clear skies, light south-westerlies, and
close, exciting racing, often squeezed into gaps between heavy rain-squalls and
periods of calm.
With the Ocean Marina as a Regatta sponsor, it was
appropriate that Ocean Marina (Pattaya-Jomtien) sailor, Kirati Assakul (Bandara
Sonic), piloting his Crowther 42 Trimaran, the heaviest craft out there, easily
won the Multihull Class on 10 points, seven points clear of Phuket sailor Henry
Kaye’s “Pagatoon”, with local Samui entry Kunta’s “Team Zazen” (18), Radab
Kanjanavanit’s “KY-ZIMCO Cedar Swan” (19) and Saa Pangawan (“Kindred Spirit”,
24), third to fifth, respectively.
Greg Coops’ Singapore X-372, “Abraxas”, finishing with a
string of first placings, dominated the IRC 2/Cruising Class, on seven points,
four clear of Jean Rheault’s Thai-registered “Souay 1”, with Eastern Seaboard
sailor Peter Herning’s Bavaria 42, “Kirafiki” (15), third.
Controversy still haunted the IRC 1 Class, with Aussie Matt
Allen (“Ichi Ban”, 15), moving to the front, followed by Hong Kong’s Marcel
Liedts (“Elektra”, 20), Nick Burns/Fred Kinmonth (“EFG Bank Mandrake”, 25), Rick
Pointon’s “Jing Jing” (34), fourth, Simon Powell (“Sell Side Dream” (52) fifth,
and Kevin Whitcraft’s (“Won Ma Rang” 57), finishing in that order. However, it
was not “clear sailing”, to use an old clich้, and the International Jury
relegated Matt to second, the lead going to Marcel. But, that’s yacht racing!
At a post-regatta gathering a number of the main supporters,
namely Bangkok Airways, Web Sawadee, Centara Grand Beach Resort, the Tourism
Authority of Thailand and the Renaissance Koh Samui, met with the media corps
and the Chairman of the Sawadee .com Regatta Organizing Committee, Callum Laing,
to discuss the regatta’s future. Callum envisioned “a new decade of sailing …and
the more interest created and brands involved will add to the ways that we can
give back to Samui and the community…in the next decade”.
And so the curtain rang down on the Sawadee.com Regatta 2011,
even as a fleet of enthusiastic Optimist sailors battled off Chaweng Beach.
Their very presence bodes well for the next decade of yacht racing at the
tropical island.
