Pattaya Sports Club
Bowling League
200 Bowlers: Tui, Tue, Kran &
Yeow.
First place Snow Bowler and second place Canada faced off
this week and Snow Bowler came out on top winning all four points. Tue
Pettae bowled a good 566 series which included a 223 game for Canada and
Wade Meyers had a 509 for Snow Bowler.
Last place VFW Post 9876 looked like a real contender
this week with all three bowlers bowling 500 or over and they won all four
points from the USMC team. Duanjai bowled a 517 series, Ooy Pluemkamon a 511
and Captain Tui Amphanon bowled a 225 game and 500 series. USMC dropped down
from fourth to fifth place after the loss.
Café Kronborg also looked very good as they took all four
points from Bavaria. Captain Kran Nielsen led Kronborg with games of 200,
208 and 213 for a league high 621 series and Rich Murphy bowled a 539.
Brother D only managed to win one point from Green Tree
but they still moved up from fifth to fourth place. Tukata Thompson was best
in this match with a 514 series.
Yeow bowling as a Pacer had a 202 game.

Russell family takes over top flight
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar
Mike Quill (left) and ‘Raji’ - winners at Khao
Kheow on Friday.
Monday, June 20, Burapha A &
B – Stableford
Twenty-seven golfers went to Burapha today and even
playing under our new pilot handicap system there were only a few people who
beat their handicap.
We played A and B off the blue markers and it played
long, but there was no rain and it never threatened but the cloud cover kept
the temperature down to a comfortable level. Get used to seeing three
columns in our results tables for the time being; these will show the
player’s “Playing Handicap” for that particular course and tee as calculated
from the tables and his “Handicap Index” as held on the computer by the
Outback, or if playing with us from the PSC (not already on our system),
that held on the PSC USGA handicap system.
It certainly was a day out for the Russell family as
Lumpy took first prize in Div A with 37 points, his nephew, J B Russell
(35pts), was third, and Lumpy’s lovely wife Noodle was fourth with 34. Only
Steve Mann’s 35 points for second place prevented a Russell whitewash.
Div B was headed by Greg Hill’s 39 points, for which he
received an immediate cut to h’cap 18.4 with Pete Stonebridge taking second
with the same score; back in third place was Bill Peach on 38.
I know if you have access to a computer you will be
reading this John Lawton so I will take this opportunity to wish you a
speedy recovery from all at the Outback.
There were two ‘2’s from John Player on the 6 th
and Ivan Plunkett on the 12th.

Tuesday, June 21, Pattaya C.C. – Stableford
Seventeen Outbackers here today, which is another
excellent turnout for the time of year. The course was in reasonable
condition with two or three of the greens a little worse than that, maybe
contributing to the lack of ‘2’s. As there were none, we ended up with two
divisions and using the Handicap Index correctly as intended by the USGA, in
conjunction with the Playing Handicap tables, there was very little
difference, on this relatively straightforward course.
Div A went to the General, on count-back over Mark
Kembrey, both on 36 points, with Kiwi John in third three back and Div B was
won by Terry Marney, also on count-back, with 38 points over Don Everett.
Dave Earthrowl in third with 37 points, who was going like a racehorse with
four to play and should have won at a canter suddenly completely lost his
concentration, three putting on the fifteenth and wiping 16 and 17 before
parring the last.

Wednesday, June 22, Royal Lakeside – Stableford
Some 29 Outbackers, including a large group of our Aussie
friends here on holiday and enjoying Pattaya, took the hour long journey to
the recently re-opened Royal Lakeside. After being closed for some 8 months
we wondered just what we would find!
Well firstly the ‘White House’ has become the ‘Light
Brown House’ with a new look Pro-shop and main reception hall, although some
finishing work is still going on both inside and in the area on the outside
leading out to the course. The locker rooms have also been completely
re-furbished to a very high standard, including new showers.
Out on the course every hole has been changed but the
basic layout has remained unaltered!
Previously, as many of you know, this was always a
pleasant but short course with wide open fairways, inviting many to score
well. These have been tightened by the presence of ‘waste bunkers’ newly
planted with the now familiar reddish-brown coloured long grass, seen
extensively at Siam Plantation and Phoenix. Unfortunately, not properly
marked as such on the score card or on the course and the caddies just
called them bunkers but said it was a free drop if amongst the grass. A
little bit vague and really most of these areas should all be GUR for the
time being until maturity, as some of the lies were very unfair!
The original waterways and streams running round and
through the course have been extensively enlarged and cleaned out, bringing
water hazards much more into play.
The greens have all been changed from the ordinary flat
of the past into tricky undulating ones, which were very hard and fast
making it hard to keep the ball on the green, with “Siam like” run off
areas, leading to more than one’s fair share of three putts; hopefully these
will soften up in the next few months.
For those of us who have known this course for a number
of years; at present it is not in the pristine condition that we used to
expect; the drinks stop at the start, although rarely open has now
disappeared entirely but there are signs of a new one being built further
out on the course but at present the first drinks stop doesn’t appear until
after the par 3 sixth, far too long to go without water, so be warned.
The weather was overcast keeping it comfortable, and
apart from us and our friends from The Caddyshack – the course was empty.
But to sum up, it’s only been open again for three weeks and they’ve done an
amazing amount of work in a short space of time; so maybe the signs are good
for the future, that remains to be seen.
This course was never previously properly rated and the
rating currently held at the PSC needs to be altered forthwith, since none
of us had any experience of the changes, the Outback decided to play the
course with the rating as the par for the course (72) with a standard slope
of 113 for both the red and white tees.
Capt’ Bob has always had a liking for this course which
showed clearly again today, as he took the honours in Div A, with the day’s
top score of 39 points. Gary Hogg (38pts) was closely behind in second and
Lloyd Shuttleworth beat Steve Mann into third, both on 36.
Div B didn’t fare so well, as surprisingly, a mere 32
points was enough to win; Rick Forrest beat Don Everett both with that score
and there was a pile up of another four players right behind, all on 31.
General Jack was one of them, who was going well to the seventh but a run of
five wipes knocked back his chances of a good round. In the end it was Nigel
Cannon who was declared third ahead of Len Hardingham in fourth.
There were just two ‘2’s from John Low and Lloyd
Shuttleworth.

Friday, June 24, Khao Kheow - Stableford
Thirty-three intrepid Outbackers converged on Khao Kheow
today and you better believe it, the course won yet again. Playing A and B
loops it was the perfect weather for golf, no rain with just a little cloud
cover made for great golf, so no real excuses.
A couple of three-balls out first and away we went no
hold ups and a good pace of play. There were some horror stories to be heard
from some of us, even the Capt’ got his butt kicked out there today making
only 7 points on the back nine; Dion, the big Kiwi only had 9 so there had
to be something out there that wasn’t conducive to really good golf for some
of us, maybe it’s “L.O.F.T” disease we’ve got.
According to the scores fed into the computer on a hole
by hole basis, the course actually played one shot tougher than par with
only Mike Quill playing better than handicap with an excellent 37 points off
his 21 handicap to win Div B. John Stafford, making the most of three extra
shots, got second with 35 and Sid Ottaway grabbed third with 32.
Raji remained steady for his 36 points, winning Div A,
with visitors, Geoff Christie (35pts) and Gary Hogg (34pts) filling the
minor places.
There were three ‘2’s from Jon Goddard, Raji and Geoff
Christie.
Back at the Outback during presentation, Capt’ Bob
outlined the changes to our playing schedules starting in about six weeks
time. Khao Kheow moves to Mondays, starting 8th August; Burapha goes to
Wednesdays starting 10th August and the newcomer on the block, Green Valley
comes in on Fridays starting 5th August. Pattaya C.C. will remain in its
ever popular, Tuesday slot.

Blacky & Buckers take the honours
PSC golf from the Café Kronborg
Thursday’s B flight winner
Andrew Krawiec, left, ‘The Admiral’ Dave Richardson, center, and A Flight
winner Stu Rifkin.
Peter Blackburn
& The Drut
Monday, June 20, Khao
Kheow A & B – Stableford
Playing at Khao Kheow is always a well anticipated
occasion and a healthy field of 17 golfers were signed up and raring to go.
We welcomed back veteran Hugh O’Donnell from his Spanish holiday and Mike
(Hunter) Gosden who was playing his first game for 3 weeks after a slow
recovery from an injured wrist.
Our regular driver, Boon gave us a bit of a scare when he
didn’t show up at the required time but an adequate replacement appeared
with the news that the “Boonmobile” was not fit for work so was replaced.
With a full bus (the others drove themselves there – including the “North
Shore Mafia”) we departed the Kronny right on time at 0815hrs and in just 38
minutes we arrived at Khao Kheow Golf Course. There were a few vehicles in
the car park but after a very brief wait we managed to send our first group
away 35 minutes ahead of schedule at 0925hrs.
A few showers during the journey to the course were not
enough to make us anticipate anything but a fine day and sure enough, the
weather was super as was the golf course as usual. With no hold ups in front
of us we played at a steady pace and with a couple of stops for refreshments
we completed our round in the good time of four hours and thirty minutes.
Being chopped once more by the PSC Handicap system on the
weekend did not deter yours truly (PB) who ended up winning the A Flight
with 37 points, 2 points ahead of Andre Van Dyk in second place. The
consistent Mike Allidi finished third with 34 points and Mike Gosden won
third spot on a count-back from Niels Hansen, both having 31 points.
The ex PSC Treasurer Graham Buckingham scored a fine 38
points (21 points on A9) to win the B Flight, 5 points clear of Daryl Evans
in second place. There was a three way count-back for third and fourth spots
with Hugh O’Donnell edging out The Admiral and Ken Bernek, all on 32 points
with Ken being the unlucky one.
A Flight (0-15)
1st Peter Blackburn (12) 37pts
2nd Andre Van Dyk (15) 35pts

those present.
Thursday, June 23,
Greenwood –Stableford
Thirteen golfers departed the Cafe’ Kronborg at 0815
hours and arrived fifty five minutes later ready for the day’s activities.
The weather was ideal for golf with a light breeze assisting the combatants
to complete the round in four hours and twenty minutes. The course was in
good condition and the greens putted truly.
Graham Buckingham was a notable absentee due to
participating in a Scrabble tournament in Bangkok in an effort to improve
his ranking as the number 62 player in the world.
The Danish dynamo Jan Lovgreen was as confused as a
Hereford bull on a strip of Astro turf, as recent form indicated his long
game was immaculate however his short game was akin to an arthritic
octogenarian with an advanced stage of St. Vitus Dance.
We welcomed Andrew Krawiec from Poland via Sydney, Nigel
Perry from England and Dick Brainbridge from Eritrea Africa.
In the A flight Stu Rifkin (Michaela’s dad) handed in a
solid thirty seven points to stand atop the podium whilst Ken Bernek played
steadily for thirty five points and Jan Lovgreen rounded it out with thirty
three points.
In the B flight Andrew Krawiec finished atop with thirty
eight points, ‘Jumping’ Joe Vanderwegan handed in thirty six points and The
Admiral Dave Richardson was third on thirty two points.
A Flight (0–20)
1st Stu Rifkin (16) 37pts
2nd Ken Bernek (17) 35pts
3rd Jan Lovgreen (20) 33pts
B Flight (21+)
1st Andrew Krawiec (22) 38pts
2nd Joe Vanderwegan (22) 36pts
3rd Dave Richardson (22) 32pts
The long putt on B9 went to Joe Vanderwegan and Nigel
Perry, despite scoring five for three down the first, claimed the coveted
Compass Cap which is awarded to the golfer who makes most use of the course.
Deefa the dog as usual was the happy recipient of donations to assist a
worthy cause in Pattaya and all who contributed are thanked.

The scribe’s recovery continues
Phoenix Tuesday/Friday Golf Group
Tuesday’s top three pose for a
photo with the Relax Bar staff.
Mike Gerrard
Friday, June 17 we had just the two groups. I say just
the two groups but we were almost the only two groups at Phoenix, as their
policies of high green fees and no rain check has been followed by a mass
exodus of guests from such a lovely golf course.
Winner on the day was yours truly with 37 points, which
is about average for this course with a course rating of only 71. A close
second was the other man in form Clive Robinson with 36 and Ted Oreton
claimed third spot with 35 points.
On to Tuesday, June 21, and as described by the headline
and shown in the photo it was that daring duo of the scribe along with the
dashing John Stafford who were the top two on the day.
Yours truly, who’s shoulder injury has finally gone away
(that’s what is called tempting fate), and with the head cold finally
dispersed came back to sizzling form again with a superbly scrambled 40
points. This cannot go on much longer with my handicap cut by four shots
over the last three weeks.
In second place was John Stafford with a fine 39 points
(he should have come joint first with 40 points after checking his card).
However we don’t DQ players in our group, merely adjust.
Then it was the ever Mr. consistent Clive Robinson with
38 points to claim third place - another fine round of golf from Clive,
shooting a gross 76.
It’s time some of the other players knocked both Clive
and myself of the pedestal. I am sure they will.
Near pins went to Clive Robinson, John Stafford (2) and
newcomer Adam Wathen.
The lucky draw prizes donated by our hosts The Relax Bar
went to John Bartley (again), Bob Neylon, back after a long holiday in
Ireland and England (the silly bugger brought the rain back with him), and
another new comer Derek Young.
The popularity of the group is such that we are growing
at a rapid rate. We will soon have to consider setting a maximum number of
players. We like to pamper only five groups but we always try to fit in last
minute calls and so we will go to a maximum of 7 groups (and that’s it!)
Next week sees us fighting for the prestigious Trattoria
Italiana voucher once again with a stroke play tournament at 12.00 noon.
Official handicaps are required for qualification into this event. Non
official handicaps can play for technical prizes only.
For more information regarding golf (every Tuesday and Friday) and sea
fishing, call me on 087 091 7565.

Don Everett catches a big one
IPGC golf from The Haven
Monday, June 20,
Plutaluang - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Rodney Hayes (9) 34pts
2nd Paul Hartley (18) 33pts
3rd Rod Crosswell (14) 33pts
4th Yoshitaka Iketami (19) 32pts
With many courses seemingly oblivious to the extreme down
turn of golfers during this exceptional low season and charging, in some
cases, even more than the prices for the recent high season, it is good to
find that not all of the managements have been seduced by the glib talk of
others and are prepared to offer a reasonable price to local golfers.
Don Everett.
Plutaluang are one of those managements and allied to the
great condition of the four nines, with continual ongoing maintenance, the
North course being at present closed, it is to be hoped that all the local
groups start to vote with their feet to avert the almost certain steep rises
in green fees that will be the result of continued support for those courses
that are taking the high road approach.
Having regard for the condition of the South and West
courses it was somewhat surprising to find that the scores were not better,
although the length may have been the important feature of the day’s rounds.
Rodney Hayes.
Rodney Hayes, never claiming to be the longest off the
tee, but deadly from around and on the greens as his handicap will attest
to, did just enough to squeeze into top spot.
Paul Hartley, maybe one of the longest off the tee but
even he would admit not quite so good around the greens, and he took second
by winning the count-back over third placed Rod Crosswell by a margin of 10
to 8 on the last six after they had both tied on 15 for the back nine.
Yoshitaka Iketami took his first placing out of The Haven
for some considerable time just one more behind in fourth spot.
There were no 2’s in either division.
Before presenting the prizes Stephen Beard, just returned
from three weeks in Europe, welcomed back Tom McCarthy, Len Hardingham and
Peter Evans after which he received one for himself from the frenzied
throng. There was also a huge vote of thanks and round of applause for
Trevor Schirmer who stood in during the Doc’s absence.
Wednesday, June 22,
Wangjuntr Lowlands - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Rodney Hayes (9) 34pts
2nd Roar Berger (25) 34pts
3rd Mark Armstrong (25) 31pts
4th Trevor Schirmer (13) 31pts
Travelling some seventy five minutes on the new road
system to the secluded Wangjuntr course to find that the day’s event had
been re-scheduled to the Lowland course as opposed to the preferred Highland
layout, was still very worthwhile as the weather was fine and dry with a
little wind to cool the temperature to a very comfortable level, and being
almost empty except for the competition entries, with there being just one
other three ball on the course, it was like playing one’s own private golf
course.
Once again Rodney Hayes took the top step of the podium,
although he had to resort to winning the count-back after tying with Roar
Berger at two above handicap for the 18, they then both tied at 16 over the
inward half, and had to be finally separated on the last three with Rodney
taking 7 and Roar 3 after they had again tied the back six at 11 apiece.
Mark Armstrong slipped into third place also winning a
count-back over Trevor Schirmer with a better 19 to 16. Trevor had to settle
for winning the longest drive prize, which turned out to be virtually
worthless, as his total return for his day’s efforts
Following a couple of dry runs, the second division’s 2’s
were won by Rod Howett and the first division was cleaned out by Rodney
Hayes with a twenty foot chip in.
Prior to the prize giving there was a welcome back for
Kaneo Watanabe.
Friday, June 24, Greenwood
- Stableford
CSS 71
1st Don Everett (23) 42pts
2nd Shuichi Kodaka (16) 39pts
3rd Roar Berger (25) 37pts
4th Trevor Schirmer (13) 34pts
For the third time in the week the group visited a golf
course in top condition, which allied to the competitive pricing added
greatly to the day’s pleasure, as the management and staff were obviously
pleased to have the business and showed it with their good service and
appreciation.
For once Rodney Hayes was strangely not in contention as
he slipped way down the field, missing out on the chance to bag a very rare
triple for the week, leaving the way clear for other players who had been
previously struggling to keep up with the pace.
The day belonged totally to Don Everett, who equaled his
lifetime best score to take the top prize by three clear with a magical
display of patience and finesse, no doubt assisted by a few lessons from the
“Thought Doctor’ taken during some teach-ins in the bar.
The news will be well received back at the Gosnells Golf
Club in Perth, Australia, where the members have been awaiting the reduction
of his handicap with great interest. They will now not be disappointed as
Don’s handicap has now been reduced to three less than when he arrived in
Pattaya at the beginning of June.
Shuichi Kodaka took second place after badly misjudging
when and how hard to throw the anchor as he slipped back to three behind
after finishing the last two holes with a single point on each after he had
scored 16 points over the first six of the inward half.
Also missing out in third place was the evergreen Roar
Berger who had a streak of 26 points over a nine hole span, only to end up
with a rather weak 0-0-1 finish on the last three holes, to leave him
trailing by two from his fellow anchor man Shuichi.
Trevor Schirmer was once again amongst the mentions
although this time a fair way behind.
Surprisingly, with such good scores on the day, there
were no 2’s in either division.
Prior to the prize presentations there was a farewell for
Roar Berger who was returning to Norway for the summer and Paul Hartley
returning to work for a few weeks.
Note: .As from the 1st of July the Haven group will depart Soi 13 at
the earlier time of 9 a.m. until further notice. If you would like to play
with The Haven group you can contact mobile 084782 4582 or call in to the
hotel at 185 Soi 13 between Beach Road and 2nd Road.
All transportation to the course is arranged and you do not need to sign up
prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.30 on Mondays, Wednesday,
Fridays and 9.00 a.m. on Sundays on the days you wish to play. A schedule of
courses to be played can be found on our web site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Sala’s maiden PGS win
IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
The Pattaya Golf Society travelled to Greenwood on
Wednesday, 22nd June, to play a stableford competition over the A and B
nines on a course which was empty. Such is the current a low season profile
of Eastern Seaboard golf.
The course was in excellent condition and from the
furthest white tees was a daunting challenge. The competition saw Stuart
Thompson take third place with 33 points in an effort to regain his former
form and Haruyuki Kato take second with 35 points to show he is now playing
to his handicap after a few rounds getting there. The winner was Alex Sala,
an old friend of the group, but one who does not always enjoy the results he
deserves, but on this occasion his strikes were true and he recorded his
best finish with the PGS.
The only birdie ‘2’ was recorded by Haruyuki and the
Booby Bevy went to Bryan Barrell for his low score finish.
Good golfing friends and an empty course, and as someone
said on the first tee, “Another fine day in Paradise”.
Nile in full flow
The Pattaya Golf Society visited Crystal Bay on Friday,
24th June to play a stableford competition on a day originally earmarked for
the group’s monthly charity day. Though the format had been changed because
of the moderate field the charity element still featured highly in the
golfers’ minds as they set out on the C and A nines which were in excellent
condition.
Technicals in the form of Near Pins were sponsored by
Larry Slattery and Len Jones and the signature par threes on both nines were
selected. On C7 Chris Smith took the prize whilst on A8 Len Jones took his
own sponsored prize and immediately donated it to the Fr. Ray Foundation
Outreach Centre which is the chosen charity of the group this year.
In the competition proper a revitalised Mr Len took third
place with 34 points, scratching the final hole in spectacular fashion,
whilst the group’s “Player of the Week”, Haruyuki Kato took second with 37
points. The winner was Nile Sheehan and his forty points was due in much
part to his excellent putting which saw him thrive on the 9.5 stimped
greens.
At the presentation it was revealed that the day had
raised the fine total of two thousand baht for the street kids in the
Outreach Centre bringing the amount raised so far this year to almost
seventy thousand. The generosity of the PGS golfers continues to impress
even in the most stringent of times. Well done everyone and a big
“thank-you” from Khun Phennipa and the kids on Soi Thepprasit.

Fairways Korat golf tour – Wednesday, June 22, Bonanza G.C. - Stableford
After the three hour journey to get here we found that we
had the course to ourselves and the weather was ideal for golf. Some of us
old timers found it tough after sitting in the bus all that time as the
joints had ceased up but we marched on as old soldiers do.
The ‘2’s pot was taken by John Coetzee (2) and Shane
Ruddle. Other first day results were as follows:
1st Richard Line (10) 37pts
2nd John Coetzee (17) 35pts
3rd Rob Davis (17) 31pts
Thursday, June 23,
Panorama G.C. - Stableford
It was only a short 45 min trip to the course, with many
people still suffering from hangovers from the night before.
Shane the bus driver eagled the first hole and birdied
the last three but still only scored 34 points, but he also had the only
‘2’.
Our Irish navigator Brinny Christie it seemed did not
know his left hand from his right and managed to get us lost so the return
journey took two and a half hours. But to everybody’s amusement we thanked
him for the sightseeing tour.

There was a bit of an altercation while we were waiting
to tee-off on the first as one of an Australian four-ball finishing on the
eighteenth hooked his ball right into the heart of us and never shouted four
or came to retrieve his ball and apologise. Anyway it all soon calmed down
and we got away in very blustery conditions. It was also very nice that a
few of the local residents joined us for the day.
There were no ‘2’s today and the winners were as follows:
A Flight
1st Michael Wicke (10) 36pts
2nd Shane Ruddle (0) 34pts
3rd Richard Line (10) 33pts
B Flight
1st Rob Davis (17) 36pts
2nd Peter Klaus (21) 33pts
3rd George Wilson (18) 31pts
Saturday, June 25,
Kabinburi G.C. - Stableford
On a last minute decision we decided to stop off at
Kabinburi on our way back and have one final round. We were all so pleased
we did as the course was in magnificent condition and the green fee was only
600 baht after 1pm, which for a Saturday was fantastic value.
There was only one ‘2’ won again by Shane but no one
minded as he got the drinks in yet again.
A Flight
1st Brad Dippie (8) 32pts
2nd Richard Line (10) 31pts
3rd Shane Ruddle (0) 30pts
B Flight
1st Tony Duthie (19) 32pts
2nd Rob Davis (17) 30pts
3rd Frank Riley (15) 29pts
Everybody from the Fairways would like to thank Brinny
Christie and his charming wife Kael for the hospitality they afforded us
during our stay.
Note: The Fairways Driving Range is situated at the top of Pattaya
Klang on Sukhumvit Road and the society plays every Sun/Mon/Wed & Fri.
Anyone wishing to play with us can call into the club house and put their

Low numbers but quality golf
Golf from the Travellers Rest
Barry Hooper
The numbers may be down at this time of the year but
the quality of the golf at the TRGG remains just as high as always. 38’s
and 37’s were the numbers needed to take the honours this week on two of
the outings. The first trip of the week was won with a 38 from Andrew
Rich on Tuesday at Plutaluang, however the low entry meant that only one
division of play was held.
Ted Senior, left, and Rob
Herald, right, Saturday’s top two at Emerald.
A 37 from Fergus Brennan for the A Flight and a 38
for David Rudderham for B Flight took the honours at Phoenix on
Thursday, June 23.
David had previously taken second on the Tuesday at
Plutaluang and is a new visitor with the TRGG from Australia and I must
admit a new name to me. But he can sure play golf judging by his
results.
Emerald on Saturday the 25th was a change to the
course originally planned (Greenwood) because they offered the TRGG a
much better weekend deal than many of its competitors. That’s refreshing
to see.
The weather held good but a fair speed wind was
around for some of the day making for tricky conditions at times and
seriously had to be taken into account when preparing for each shot. As
any golfer who has played Emerald will know, good course management is
essential here as you can end up with some very difficult ball positions
either above or below your feet.
However, that being said, Ted Senior managed to keep
it together and came home with the win at 34 points to beat Rob Herald
by three back at 31, who himself had to wait for a count-back decision
for second place over Fergus Brennan who had only produced 15 on the
back whereas Rob had produced 19.
Tuesday, June 20,

3rd Chris Playforth (11) 35pts
B Flight
1st David Rudderham (14) 38pts
2nd Bob Cannon (24) 35pts
3rd Tom McCarthy (20) 34pts
Saturday, June 25, The

1st Ted Senior (12) 34pts

4th Bob Cannon (24) 28pts
Note: If you want any further or fuller information about the
golf outings played by the TRGG from the Travellers Rest Hotel, please

Thompson triumphs with level par round
PSC golf from The Three Sisters Bar
Wednesday winner Bill Thompson, left, with runner up
Larry Emerson.
Wednesday, June 22 was another great day for golfing with
a nice breeze and great cloud cover and Pattaya Country Club’s fairways and
greens were in good shape.
We had just a short field today as several of the
regulars were down for repair. Coming back to Caddy Shack II, the count of
the cards began and Bill Thompson was declared the winner with 36 points,
followed in second place by Larry Emerson with a 35.
Sus Ige took care of the snacks and dogs department while Herbie was
taken back to the hospital for further repair work.
Mikael and Maliporn top the charts on charity day
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Monday, June 20, Pattaya
C.C. – Stableford
There are many of our players who have returned to their
home countries for a break and with 3 games in three days this week there
was only one division out today.
Pattaya Country Club was almost deserted apart from a
couple of groups in front of us and the conditions are still acceptable here
for this time of the year in the opinion of most of our players.
The ladies who played in Noi’s
charity golf day pose for a group photo.
With his first place on the podium position for a long
time, the Frenchman Jean Morel scored 36 points to win the day while in form
Mikael Andersson, playing off 10, was second three points behind and Tony
Thorne took third with 32.
There were two birdies on the 5th hole today in both
divisions and with three rollovers in each division Tony Thorne and Jean
Morel won the max.
Tuesday, June 21, Pattaya
C.C. – Stableford
It was Noi Emmerson’s charity day for the Pattaya
Redemptorist School for the Blind and we had 12 ladies out and 32 men in a
three divisional stableford competition. There were two and three technical
prizes on every hole sponsored by Fairways Driving Range, Honda, Thai Nippon
Steel, Mr and Mrs Bryan Neal and Torstein from the El Paso Restaurant.
After the heavy rain here the previous night we adopted
the ‘pick, clean and place’ through the green ruling which applied to the
rough as well.
There were two 44’s in today and with one of them,
including 23 on the front nine, Mikael Andersson won division 1 ahead of
Piere Bietry in second with 38.
The Burapha caddy in form at the moment and waiting to be
cut took out the ladies division with 44 points, well done Kung Maliporn.
Jang Walker was second with 40 points.
Not keeping up with the other divisions, Terry Tucker won
division 2 with 41 points, with Torstein beating Ron Gillet on a 21 /19 back
nine count-back for second after they both came in with 38 points.
It was back to Noi’s restaruant in Soi 10 near Second
Road for the presentation and free buffet for all golfers and partners. A
great day was had by all, many thanks to the sponsors and to Noi herself.
Wednesday, June 22,
Eastern Star - Stableford
A late cancellation at Green Valley for obvious reasons,
and there were 15 players wanting to play at Eastern Star for the reduced
green fee. We had two divisions out today and the same old name won division
1 yet again with 35 points, well done Mikael. Darryl Blair was in second
with 32 and Chris Voller took third on 29.
The organiser won division 2 with a meager 33 points
while Joe Kubon beat ‘count-back Bernie’ 16/13 after they both finished with
30.
There was a rollover in the ‘2’s in division 1 to our
normal Monday and Wednesday games but in division 2 Bernie Sinclair birdied
the third to take the pot.
Friday, June 24, Eastern
Star - Stableford
After a few late cancellations there were only 19 out
today on our regular Friday game here. Most of thought the greens at Eastern
Star were in a slightly better condition the previous week but they are
still working to improve them.
It was a very pleasant day here with a cool breeze coming
off the coast and the best score of the day was in division 2 with Joe Kubon
winning with 36 points. Playing off 19 and 77 years old and still walking
the course every week, Brian Blackford came in second on 34, while the
organiser was third after beating Peter Grant and Jim Lane on count-back
after they all scored 30 points.
Paul Butler topped division 1 with 35 points, Bill
Bertram was second with 30 and Andy Baber took third one point behind.
In the ‘2’s there are now three rollovers in division 1
and four in division 2 to next Friday.
Another two names disappear this week back to the UK for four and eight
weeks - bon voyage to Joe Kubon and Harry Riley.

Stan & Jeff get skinned at Pattana
PSC golf from Mulligans Lakeside
Tuesday, June 21, The
Emerald - Stableford
First to Tuesday though where we went to Emerald, a bit
short on numbers again with players away, cars being fixed and even guys
turning up to another course. Put that one down to a communication
breakdown, so no harm done.
Ray Spence (16) & and Graham Hiskett (13) had to be
separated by count-back, with Ray getting the nod 17 to 13. Obviously the
form players on the day, this pair shared the near pins also.
Thursday, June 23, Pattaya
C.C. - Skins
Thursday we journeyed to Pattana where we were directed
to the B & C layout, arguably the most intimidating 1st tee in the area, B1.
Short numbers today so we decided on a skins format where the good shot may
be rewarded, unless someone else bobs up on the same hole with a shot.
Frans Olgers (19) led the way home with 8 skins, just
ahead of Joel Flor (19) with 6, while Jeff Wylie (6) with 3 & Stan Rees (25)
with 1, propped up the field. It was good fun though, made all the better by
the course being in such good nick.
Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf on Tuesday & Thursday, with
presentation at the course Tuesday & Mulligans Lakeside hosting on
Thursdays. Call 089 094 1841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you
there, cheers & good golfing!

PSC golf from The Caddyshack
Wednesday, June 22,
Royal Lakeside - Stableford
1st Brian Orr 37pts
2nd James Savage 36pts
3rd Damian Trant 35pts
Brian Orr, right, strolls to
victory at Royal Lakeside
Brian Orr was first out of the blocks last week to claim
a win at Royal Lakeside on Wednesday with a one under par 37 points. Brian
edged James Savage into second spot by one point while Damian Trant took
third a further point back.
Friday, June 24,
Green Valley - Stableford
1st David Zlatarich 37pts
2nd Derek Mower 35pts
3rd James Savage 33pts
David Zlatarich came through to win on Friday with a score of 37 points
to finish ahead of Derek Mower and James Savage, the latter appearing on the
podium for the second time this week.
It’s so simple for Simon
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s
Sunday, June 19,
St Andrews - Stableford
A Flight
1st Simon Spalding (1) 37pts
2nd Yui Bietry (10) 36pts
B Flight
1st Peter Henshaw (17) 35pts
2nd Pierre Bietry (15) 35pts
Near Pins: Gabriel Enright (2), Alain Bellec,
Colin Sansom.
Colin the Golf Manager, left,
congratulates Simon Spalding following his excellent win at St. Andrews.
Old friend Simon Spalding, who plays his golf out of the
Eastwood golf club in Melbourne Australia, was a sight for sore eyes, at
least that is until he spoilt the warm welcome by coming in with the only
score better than par for the top flight and match honours. Simon’s 37
points was one better than the very consistent Yui Bietry.
Peter ‘Don O’Corleone’ Henshaw continued his way to the
pay window, a two time top spot finish in as many games, gaining a
count-back victory over Yui’s other half Pierre as they both settled for
silver.
Don Lehmer, Chaten Patel, Jez Lees, Pierre Bietry and
Adam Oyston shared the ‘2’s pot.
Tuesday, June 21, Khao
Kheow - Stableford
1st Peter Hynard (14) 37pts
2nd Eddy Beilby (15) 32pts
It was off to the fine display of Khao Kheow for the mid
week fixture, and it was Peter the right honorable Hynard who awoke (well
his golf never sleeps) to throw 37 points at the yellow tees and A Flight.
To say that Eddy the Eagle was gob smacked to find his 32
point haul took the silver would be an understatement. Colin the donkey and
Jan the quite one were a shot back and received exactly what they expected -
nothing.
No 2’s so it’s a rollover on Wednesday.
Wednesday, June 22,
Bangpra - Stableford
1st Terry Mangan (10) 34pts
2nd Nelly Stoor (18) 34pts
3rd Jim Bell (17) 32pts
On a day that turned out to be a non counting day it was
the scourge of Co. Wicklow and Walking Street, Terry Mangan, who bettered
Nelly Stoor with a more favorable distributed 34 points. This left the newly
arrived Aussi Jim Bell to pick up the bronze two shots back.
‘The donkey’ Peter Henshaw and Jimmy Day were just one
point of the podium steps.
Mike the welsh wizard picked up a healthy rollover 2’s
pot.
Friday, June 24,
The Emerald - Stableford
A Flight
1st Eddy Beilby (15) 39pts
2nd Terry Mangan (10) 39pts
B Flight
1st Ed Delaney (29) 37pts
2nd Peter Henshaw (17) 33pts
The last day of the week is usually held on one of the
local courses when possible to avoid Friday Sukhumvit traffic. So it was off
to the very popular Emerald, but this does not mean that some of the lads
get back any quicker for some unknown reason!
Eddy’ the Eagle’ always fairs well here and today was no
exception as he was one of only two players to better par. Eddy’s very
creditable top score of 37 points gave him the senior flight and match
honors. Co. Wicklow man Terry “you know who” carded a very useful even par
round for the silver.
Dropping down to the junior flight saw an all Irish
affair as Ed Delaney showed all his experience to post the only other day’s
subpar round to take the flight with a solid 37 points. Peter ‘Don
O’Corleone’ Henshaw with a favorable count-back over Kevin Selms rounded out
the flight.
No 2s were recorded so a rollover to Sunday.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi
1, Beach Road Soi 13/3 near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with
us just pop in and add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764.
Transport is provided.

Morris mauls Greenwood with 41-pointer
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
Friday top three pose for
a photo with one of Bert’s finest.
Derek Brook
Tuesday, June 21,
Greenwood – Stableford
It is still quiet here in town with few golfers
around, however we continue to put out close to our normal numbers.
This day the test was to be Greenwood A & B Nines and
as usual the weather was wet. The covers were on the golf bags as we
teed off and rain was threatened, but apart from a little drizzle the
threat did not actually materialize, so we happily drove around and
played a very pleasant game in great conditions, although towards the
end it did get a bit humid.
The course was a bit damp but we were able to use
carts and all in all it was a great day of golf. The fairways being so
wet they were a bit long as it was obviously difficult to cut, but the
greens were quite good and putted well. The course has been used often
in the past season and it is in need of a rest but the rain will bring
it back to top condition.
Round over we drove back to Bert’s, and I noticed
that there was a major accident on the way back when a truck and trailer
overturned. Indeed it must have been major as Mashi woke me up to see
it. Really hard work this golf is!
So to the results, and we had some good scores. The
winner with 41 points was Ted Morris (nice to see Ted back in the
winner’s circle after a recent serious illness). We had a count-back on
39 points for second that saw Graham Buckingham in second and Andre Van
Dyk in third. We also had a count-back for fourth that saw Mike O’Brien
in fourth with 37 points and Dick Warberg just missing out.
Near pins went to John Binns, Mashi Kaneta and Neil
Shaw.
Friday, June 24, The
Emerald – Stableford
An early morning start at the Emerald, well early for
us, saw a round where the covers did not go on the golf bags and we
could use carts on the fairways. Mind, all was not roses as the ground
was still a bit wet and behind us the course was pretty full with many
groups playing on a Friday.
Soon to the first tee it was straight away and with
the grass a bit wet you had to get a good drive in. The wind was strong
most of the way around which was good as when it dropped the humidity
could really be felt. Mind, in a cart you made your own breeze.
So quite tough conditions with the grass a little
long and unfortunately the greens on the back undergoing repair. Still
we battled around and soon were in the changing room and a nice hot or
cold shower as was your wish. Then out to enjoy what is probably one of
the cheapest, and still really good, restaurants at any golf course.
Maybe it is being open that adds a bit of difference.
Back at Bert’s it was time to enjoy Fridays fish and
chips and then onto the presentation. The same faces seem to be in every
presentation of late, so I thought we would include Bert and Pu’s
‘Pocket Rocket’ waitress in the photo. We had a count-back for the
winner on 37 points that saw Darryl Evans in first and Dick Warberg in
second. In third we had a new face with Jerry Garcia coming in with 32
points.
Near pins were won by Daryl Evans, Derek Brook and Andre Van Dyk.

Geoff ends his trip in style with win at Emerald
The Backyard Golf Society
Friday’s winner Geoff, center,
celebrates his win with the staff at the Blue Sky Bar.
It was another Friday, June 24, and another trip to
Emerald Golf Course for the weekly outing of the Backyard Golf Society. With
the Chairman and his boy turning up (for the first time in 3 weeks!), even
though it looked as if the course would be busy, we got off on time and a
nice steady round meant that we were back in the club house by 13:00.
As can be gathered from the headline, Geoff came in first
with 37 points and Neville took second with 36, which could have been
completely different if he hadn’t picked his ball up on the 4th hole.
‘Broken Wing’ took the nearest the pin prize with the
skin results as follows: Neville (8), Terry with 2 rollovers from the week
before (7), Geoff (3) and Dangle (2).
Finally we wish Geoff and his misses a safe trip to the
UK and welcome Alan B back with all of us looking forward to celebrating his
birthday with him next week.
St. Andrews School holds inaugural Invitational Golf Tournament 2011
The teachers enjoy a great day on
the golf course.
Jeff LaMantia
The inaugural St. Andrews International School,
Invitational Golf Tournament was held in May at Green Valley Golf Course.
There were just short of seventy students, teachers, parents and friends,
out to enjoy the day of friendly golf. The event’s main sponsor was The
Holiday Inn Pattaya, who donated some amazing prizes and the organization of
the event was brilliantly assisted by the professionals from the Green
Valley Golf Centre.
St Andrews students Jason and Ty
were crowned champions at 9 under par.
The 2-man scramble format leant itself to all different
styles of golfers (the good, the bad and the ugly) and proved to be loads of
fun for all participants. There were some amazing performances and many
lasting memories.
After the golf, all the players enjoyed a social evening,
with great food and even the odd karaoke performance to round off the
evening.
Overall the event was heavily dominated by some very
talented St Andrews’ students who managed to take both the net and gross
prizes. As a result the teachers have vowed to give them even more homework
to cut down on their time to practice their golf!
The event will be repeated next academic year and anybody
interested in joining in the fun should contact the St Andrews PE
department. The school would like to thank all who made this, such a great
day.
Net Awards
1st None (Toby & Ms Jo Park)
2nd Fathers 2B (Shane Gielty & Rob
King)
3rd Marshmallows (Tee & Jay)
Gross Awards
1st Kerrzy-101 (Jason & Ty Kerr)
2nd Two Big J’s (Jason Williams &

St Andrews School hits the medal trail in Taiwan
The St Andrews School team in Taipei.
Amanda McCloskey
At the end of last month, St. Andrews International
School took 32 lucky students to the FOBISSEA (Federation of British
International Schools in South East Asia) Primary Games in Taipei, Taiwan.
This is the first time that the FOBISSEA Primary Games have taken place in
Taiwan, and the Taipei European School did a fantastic job of hosting the
event.
Mattia is delighted with his
collection of swimming medals.
The Primary Games is a sporting tournament involving a
swimming gala, athletics competition, tee-ball tournament and a football
tournament. Each school brings 6 teams, 3 boys and 3 girls in each team,
aged from 9-U11. Although the event is competitive, and at a high standard,
it is often referred to as the ‘friendly games’ as there is an emphasis on
sportsmanship, fair play and enjoying competing.
The students had been training hard for the event in all
4 disciplines involving swimming training before school, athletics,
tee-ball, football and fitness training. Each student had to compete in
every event. St. Andrews are very proud with their student’s achievements,
as every single student received at least one medal, with some students
receiving 12 medals!
Bam wins gold again.
The games opened with the swimming gala where the St.
Andrews students performed superbly in the pool, and most of the relay teams
finished in a medal position. The Y5 girl’s team came in gold position by
nearly a length which is a fantastic achievement (thanks to Mr. LaMantia for
the early morning training).
After a tiring morning in the pool, the students spent
the afternoon at the Taipei Stadium playing Tee-ball (which is a variation
of baseball and played in mixed teams). The St. Andrews Y4 & Y6 team both
finished in the bronze position.
The second day of activities saw the athletics
competition. Every student competed in running, throwing or jumping events.
The day started with a fantastic 600m run by St. Andrews Caleb Truscott who
took an early lead and held it for the entire race, with a winning smile, as
he came in at the gold medal position. The day continued with a run of
medals for St. Andrews; the Y6 boys relay team finished the day with the
silver medal so they could all return to the hotel with smiles on their
faces.
Caleb leads from start to finish
in the 600m race.
The final day of the competition involved the football
tournament. The St. Andrews teams have all worked hard this year in training
for this event and were delighted that 4 of the teams came in a medal
position; and a special mention to the Y6 girls team who took the gold medal
with no losses - a fantastic finish to a superb tournament.
A special thank you goes to the coaches for all of their tremendous work
in making this an enjoyable and successful tournament; namely Mr. Minor, Mr.
Hyde, Mr. Harrison & Mr. Cary.

Pattaya United appoint
new head coach
Chalermwut Sangapol a.k.a.
‘Coach Nui’ holds a club scarf as he is introduced to the Pattaya United fans
and media at a press conference held June 22 at the Nongprue district sport
field.
Ariyawat Nuamsawat
Pattaya United FC have announced the appointment of
Chalermwut Sangapol to be their new head coach for the remainder of the 2011
Thai Premier League season.
‘Coach Nui’ as he is affectionately known was introduced to
the media at a press conference held at the Nongprue district sport field on
Wednesday, June 22. Sangapol was previously coach of the Thailand national U19
football team.
Following a disappointing opening half of the season,
United’s former coach Jatuporn Pramolban felt compelled to tender his
resignation which left the club frantically searching around for a suitable
replacement during the mid-season break.
United have dropped to 14th position in the Premier League
standings following a run of poor results but ‘Coach Nui’ is confident he can
turn the club’s fortunes around and help propel the team up the league table,
although he cautioned there would be no quick fixes and only a tremendous work
ethic from everyone involved in the club would suffice.
During the press conference, which was chaired my Pattaya
city mayor and club chief advisor, Ittiphol Khunplome, it was revealed that
United youth players Pirapat Pongsen, Wasan Charam, and Adisak Harnthet were
recently selected for the national U19 team which was vindication of the youth
policies being introduced at the club.
United are opening up their academy this month to screen for
further outstanding young prospects aged between 16 and 18 years who they can
retain for further coaching with an eye on grooming them for the first team. The
final selection round is scheduled to take place on July 9 and 10 at the
Nongprue football field.
In the meantime the first team squad will return to league action under the
watchful eye of their new coach on Saturday July 2, with an away fixture at high
flying Bangkok Glass FC.
