Pattaya Sports Club Bowling League

200 Bowlers: Tukata & Tue.

Canada, who have bowled well the first two thirds of the league, have got back on track as they secured all four points from second place Brother D. Tue Pettae led Canada with a 219 game and 562 series.

First place Snow Bowler lost three points to Green Tree but they still are 9.5 points in front of Brother D with only four weeks remaining in this league. Tukata Thompson led Green Tree with a 207 game and 548 series. Lada Key bowling as a Pacer had a 528 series.

Joe Ferral bowled a 212 game and 544 series to lead the USMC team to a three point win over Cafe Kronborg.

Fifth place Bavaria continued their winning ways as they won three points from VFW Post 9876. Ooy Pluemkamon bowled a 533 series for VFW but it was only enough to get one point.

A trip to the well named Valley

PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside

Ray, Clive & Allan at Mulligans Lakeside.

Tuesday dawned fine & clear following Monday’s rainy day blues, so it was off to golf, up Hwy 7 to Pleasant Valley. Much maligned by some, for why really escapes me, as it is, as the name suggests quite a pleasant course in a very picturesque setting. Anyway, looking at the glass half full, means less traffic for us to deal with when playing there.

So to the round, it was Skins format again, and Clive now armed with his brand new official handicap showed glimpses of brilliance again to pick up 3 skins on the short 17th. Ray (17) led the way with 7 skins, a couple courtesy of a nice birdie 2 on 5, while Jeff grabbed 6, leaving Allan to score the other 2 after a good par on 9.

Thursday we visited Rayong C.C. where the greens are a little on the shaggy side, making it difficult to get the ball to the hole. Having said that, the course is very much playable and represents fair value, especially to those cart users out there.

Highlights were thin on the ground; however, mention should be made of Matt Anderson parring all par 3s on the day, showed Jeff the way, as he averaged a tick under a double bogey, following a mini disaster on 12.

Mulligans Lakeside plays golf on Tuesday & Thursday, with presentation at the course Tuesday & ML hosting on Thursdays. Call 089 094 1841 for scheduling or enquiries.

Hope to see you there, cheers & good golfing.

Bill excels as Burapha bows out

PSC golf from the Outback Golf Bar

Nuan Keddie with her husband (left), Joe Mooneyham and Capt’ Bob.

Monday, August 1, Burapha - Stableford

Twenty two Outbackers travelled to Burapha for our last Monday there, as we switch to Khao Kheow as of next Monday, 8th August, with Burapha moving to Wednesdays, starting 10th August.

The day started off cold, gloomy and overcast and never really improved but thankfully the rain held off until the closing couple of holes. Buggy’s were not allowed on the fairways had received a lot of rain overnight, but the fairways and rough still looked as if they had been cut and the course was presented well, apart from the greens on the D nine which have not fully recovered from there recent coring and sanding.

With 22 players we had 2 divisions and some good scoring by a number of golfers. Division B was won by Bill Conway (34) with the day’s top score, a brilliant 41 points, closely followed by Owen Walkely (9) with 40pts, which won Div A. He (Owen) was 5 points clear of John Cunningham (8) and Steve Mann (11) both with 35.

The scoring was better in Div B, as Bob Lindborg (19) took second on 38 from Andy Brady (25) on 37, who has fared well since starting playing with the Outback, a week or so ago.

There were only two ‘2’s from Steve Durey on hole D2 and Pete Stonebridge on hole D8.

Div A (0-17)

1st Owen Walkley (9/Hi9.3) 40pts

2nd John Cunningham (8/Hi7.7) 35pts

3rd Steve Mann (11/Hi10.9) 35pts

4th Phil Waite (17/Hi16.5) 33pts

Div B (18+)

1st Bill Conway (34/Hi32) 41pts

2nd Bob Lindborg (19/Hi17.9) 38pts

3rd Andy Brady (25/Hi24) 37pts

4th Barry Lewis (29/Hi27.8) 35

Tuesday, August 2, Pattaya C.C. - Stableford

Many of the 12 Outbackers at Pattaya C.C. today, played here yesterday as well, although the scoring was not quite so high. Yesterday’s winner, Dave Earthrowl romped home by a country mile with 44pts, whereas today he could only manage 34, although he was playing off a somewhat lower handicap.

Bernie Stafford (33 yesterday) improved to 36pts, which was enough to win today, from his playing partner Ian Heddle in second , who fired 75 gross on Monday and 76 gross today off a 2 handicap, for his 34.

There were three others also with 34pts, sorted out by count-back; Ian beat Dennis by virtue of his 12pts on the last 6 holes, both having 19 on the back 9 and Dennis in turn beat Chris Wright, who could only manage 15 on the back.

The course was Ok’ish with a few poorly raked bunkers about and some very bumpy greens but they do look set to improve in the next few weeks. The grass planting work on the bunker slopes is also continuing.

There were three ‘2’s from Bernie Stafford on hole 12 and two from Ian Heddle, also on hole 12 and another on hole 5.

1st Bernie Stafford (12/Hi12.4) 36pts

2nd Ian Heddle (2/Hi3.6) 34pts

3rd Dennis Persson (17/Hi17.2) 34pts

4th Chris Wright (18/Hi18.1) 34pts

5th David Earthrowl (18/Hi18.1) 34pts

Wednesday, August 3, Eastern Star – Stableford

Fifteen Outbackers travelled to Eastern Star for the first time this year on a lovely sunny day. The course has undergone changes during the last twelve months, mainly the replacement of all greens; which were clearly young but were still good and will certainly improve as they get older. The fairways had worm mounds after the recent rain and that distracted from the course presentation but they generally had a good coverage of grass and were very playable.

We had the course basically to ourselves and with a three ball at the front a fast pace was set for all to follow. We played the white markers at 6500 yards for the boys which made for a tough day especially as the wind was blowing quite strongly.

The winner of the day was Nuan Keddie in her last game at the Outback as Nuan is returning to Tasmania. Nuan had 38 points on her 20 handicap, from Stephen Mann with 36 on his 11 handicap; third was the continually improving Bill Conway with 34 points on his 30 handicap, with John Fitzgerald fourth on his 16 handicap with 28 points on a count-back from Greg Hill and Brian Maddox.

There was one ‘2’ to John Fitzgerald.

1st Nuan Keddie (20/Hi19.1) 38pts

2nd Steve Mann (11/Hi10.9) 36pts

3rd Bill Conway (31/Hi29.5) 35pts

Friday, August 5, Green Valley – Stableford

The Outback Bar has chosen Green Valley as it’s new Friday venue for the foreseeable future and they couldn’t of done it better. The course was ours for the day with no hold-ups and the weather was beautiful. The course was there for the taking, with no wind, great fairways, tees and rough cut with greens that were true but not as fast as they could be.

We teed of early and would like to commend all players for turning up at least half an hour before normal tee off. Even Tony McDonough was on time even though he lost the van, his bag, his shoes and if you ask his mates, his brain, but then that’s what happens in Thailand..

28 players were scheduled to play and with some omissions and additions we ended up with 27. Welcome to Jack Butler, Mike Allidi, Jan Eriksen, Tony McDonough, Stuart Sutton and May Mitchell having their first game with the Outback for a while and goodbye to Andy Brady who leaves as for sunny Scotland.

We had two divisions, 0 to 14 and 15+. Division B was won by May Mitchell with 40 points on her adjusted handicap of 19. May played great golf and will only improve. Second was the continually improving Steve Durey with 39 points on his 20 handicap, third was Kissy Buchanan with 36 points on his 16 handicap and fourth was Andy Brady with 34 points on his 25 handicap.

Division A was won by Jan Eriksen with 37 points on his 14 handicap, from Stephen Mann with 36 points on his 11 handicap, third was Jack Butler with 35 points on his 13 handicap and fourth was Nigel Flanagan with 34 points on his 11 handicap.

There were three ‘2’s to Nigel Flanagan on hole 9, with Andy Brady & John Player on hole 12.

Div A (0-14)

1st Jan Eriksen (14) 37pts

2nd Steve Mann (11/Hi10.9) 36ptss

3rd Jack Butler (13) 35pts

4th Nigel Flanagan (11/Hi11.3) 34pts

Div B (15+)

1st May Mitchell (19/Hi21) 40pts

2nd Steve Durey (20/Hi19.2) 39ptss

3rd Keith Buchanan (16) 36pts

4th Andy Brady (25/Hi23.6) 34pts

Note: The Outback Golf Bar is situated about 6km from Sukhumvit Road along Soi Siam Country. All are welcome to come and join us for a beer and a hit. Just call in and put your name down on the list or give Bob a call on 087 941 2474.

Veterans Ted & Hugh on top at Pleasant Valley

PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside

Ted Morris, ‘The Admiral’ & Hugh O’Donnell.

Peter Blackburn

Monday, 1st August - Pleasant Valley - Stableford

At 0600 hrs the rain was tumbling down as it had been for a few hours but I kept telling myself that we rarely have a game cancelled due to bad weather and today was no exception. Stu called in sick at 0615 hrs due to a case of the Don Bradman’s (the runs) and I received the familiar wet weather cancellation from another “fine weather golfer” but the remaining 14 golfers were raring to go.

We welcomed Gary Bingham from Apple Valley, California and Paul & Bo Cardwell from Pattaya who had not played with us for a while. Departing the Kronny a little early at 0812 hrs we drove through showers with overcast skies above and arrived to find an almost empty car park just 43 minutes later. Our first group, a threesome was able to tee off 45 minutes ahead of schedule at 0915 hrs and for some reason were asked to start on no. 10.

We played most of the first nine in light drizzle, not enough to warrant even the use of our brollys and although the course was fairly soggy due to earlier heavy rain it was in great shape and the greens were terrific. Just two hours for the first nine and although we came to a screaming halt with just one hole to play we sheltered from the downpour for 10 minutes and then continued in more light drizzle to complete our round in four hours and ten minutes.

Peter Blackburn, ‘The Admiral’ & Graham Rice.

Once again we had defied all the pessimists and were able to finish reasonably dry after a round of golf on a fine course in this wonderful part of the world.

We had 2 Flights with A Flight for handicaps 0 to 17 and B Flight for handicaps of 18 & over.

Despite being clipped two shots off his handicap on the weekend veteran Ted Morris took out the A Flight on a count back from Ken Bernek, both with 38 points. Yours truly also was clipped a shot but managed to finish third with 36 points and another Aussie, Mike Gosden was fourth with 32 points in a three way count back from Paul Cardwell and Walter Baechli.

A Flight

1st - Ted Morris (16) - 38 points

2nd - Ken Bernek (17) - 38 points

3rd - Peter Blackburn (11) - 36 points

4th - Mike Gosden (11) - 32 points

B Flight

1st - Hugh O’Donnell (23) - 37 points

2nd - Graham Buckingham (22) - 35 points

3rd - Ronnie Ratte (26) - 33 points

4th - Bo Cardwell (40) - 32 points

For the first time that I can remember the Admiral managed to win the Compass Cap and Hunter once more paraded Deefa the Dog who collected plenty of donations to charity from the ever generous Kronny gang.

Thursday, 4th August - Khao Kheow A & B - Stableford

Stu “HBF” Rifkin cancelled early along with two of his mates from Gove, N.T., Australia due to various family illnesses and Martin Todd pulled out the previous evening with an injured side. Rumour has it that Toddy sustained his injury whilst dispatching a fully clothed Southern European gentleman into his swimming pool earlier in the day after “words had been spoken” - Never a dull moment in Pattaya!

Despite this we had eighteen golfers signed up to tackle the picturesque Khao Kheow layout. We welcomed back Andre Van Dyk, Andrew Krawiec and Norm Cheetham from Australia, Doug Maiko from Providence, Rhode Island and newcomer Graham Rice from Gove, N.T., Australia.

Departing the Kronny a tad early at 0813 hrs it took just 43 minutes for the journey to K.K. It was soon apparent that for the first time in many months we would have to wait until our scheduled tee time as the course was very busy with various groups booked in before us. This meant we had a wait of over an hour and I for one had to ask Hunter Gosden where the practice putting green was as it was a long time since we had time here to prepare before teeing off.

Nonetheless our first threesome teed off spot on our scheduled time of 1014 hrs and in glorious weather we commenced what we knew was going to be a very slow round of golf, something that we had not been used to of late. The fairways were generally in great shape but some of the tee boxes were a bit “ordinary” although this did not really detract from the beauty of the course and the greens were as usual in tip top shape. Several hold ups made it necessary to partake of quite a few drink stops and four hours and forty-six minutes later we managed to complete our round, the slowest for a long time but still a very enjoyable one.

We had 2 Flights, A Flight for 0 to 13 and B Flight for handicaps of 14 and over and there were rewards for nearest the pins on all 4 par threes.

Continuing his good form and fortune, yours truly managed to score 38 points and take out the A Flight, 2 points ahead of another Aussie, Paul Avery in second place. The consistent Mashi Kaneta came third with 33 points and the returning Doug Maiko finished fourth with 30 points. First time visitor Graham Rice had a day out and won the B Flight with a fine 41 points, three points clear of Ken Bernek in second place. Norm Cheetham from Perth finished third with 37 points and Andre Van Dyk completed the podium 1 point further back.

A Flight

1st - Peter Blackburn (11) - 38 Points

2nd - Paul Avery (8) - 36 points

3rd - Mashi Kaneta (12) - 33 points

4th - Doug Maiko (13) - 30 points

B Flight

1st - Graham Rice (14) - 41 points

2nd - Ken Bernek (17) - 38 points

3rd - Norm Cheetham (15) - 37 points

4th - Andre Van Dyk (15) - 36 points

Nearest The Pins

A3 - Peter Blackburn

A5 - Doug Maiko

B3 - Andre Van Dyk

B8 - Peter Blackburn

Returning from resting a sore foot, Greenlander managed to win the Compass Cap yet again and Deefa the Dog and Hunter collected yet more donations for charity from our Kronny crew.

Bill Thompson tops 3 sisters

Bill Thompson (left) came first, followed by Dale Murphy (right) second.

PSC Golf from the Three Sisters Bar

There is little question that Three Sisters golfers have a lock on the weather. This 3rd of August was beautiful at the Pattaya Country Club. The course is in great shape, not so for some of the golfers. Back at Caddy Shack II the cards were tallied.

No stranger to the top position was Bill Thompson with 35 points. We need to keep him on the Rig. He was followed by Dale Murphy, with 31 points. Following close behind was Richard Hall with 30 points. Once again Sus managed to provide snacks and hot dogs that everyone enjoyed.

Daniel Willits is best of the week

IPGC Golf from the Haven

Daniel Willits

Monday, August 1, Pattana B&C - Stableford

CSS 74

1st Peter Masters (11) 36

2nd Graham Davis (8) 35

3rd Jeffrey Bunn (10) 32

4th Magnus Alvarsson (15) 31 cb 14 b6 10

5th Stuart Thompson (10) 31 cb 14 b6 7

Back to Pattana where the new management has taken a far more enlightened view of the low season following recent representations on behalf of the regular golfing communities and adjusted the green fees to a reasonable rate. Hopefully the reappearance of a very widely experienced manager who has previously spent valuable time with Crystal Bay, Eastern Star, Black Mountain and Lotus Valley will help in adding a creditable voice to the meetings of the Eastern Seaboard Golf Clubs to further the interests of all those involved in golf in the region.

Peter Masters

With the “A” course undergoing a major overhaul, being closed at least until the beginning of December, “B & C” were the challenges of the day from the yellow tees, which at this course are the ones further back.

Peter Masters continued his excellent run of form which has seen him return six scores out of the last eight under handicap which has resulted in a two shot reduction in handicap, putting him almost at the single figure mark, as he takes advantage of the school holidays to get back to golf.

Graham Davis again played well, although slightly below handicap, to take second place three shots behind, and being only one of two to play within two of their handicaps, underlining the difficulty to which the course was playing as the CSS went out to 74 for the day.

Jeffrey Bunn is becoming one of the usual suspects to add to the list, again appearing amongst the prize winners, a further three shots behind Graham.

Yasuo Suzuki

Magnus Alvarsson received a mention on his first appearance as he won a count back with Stuart Thompson by a margin of 10 to 7 over the last six after they had tied the nine at 14 apiece to take fourth place and leave Stuart in fifth.

Barry Winton as usual stroked in a 2 in the first division and Magnus Alvarsson made it a very happy welcome day as he cleared out the large second division pot.

Before presenting the prizes Stephen Beard welcomed new member Magnus Alvarsson and welcomed back Peter Masters.

Friday August 5, Pattaya C.C., - Stableford

CSS 71

1st Daniel Willits (14) 41

2nd Rod Howett (23) 39

3rd Fred Land (12) 36 cb 19

4th Trevor Schirmer (14) 36 cb 18 b6 11 b3 6

5th Jeffrey Bunn (10) 36 cb 18 b6 11 b3 5

Following a hiatus in the week as everyone competed, with varying levels of success, in the IPGC Monthly Medals on Wednesday, a report of which may be found on other pages of the Pattaya Mail, it was back to the standard fare of Stableford at the very conveniently situated Pattaya Country Club where once again the course was found to be in very good condition with the greens especially well prepared and playing flat and true with a fair amount of speed rolled in to them.

Daniel Willits, recently arriving from Sydney and having sampled several other local golfing groups, finally returned to his first love in Soi 13 and was immediately rewarded with a win as he stroked in round in five under par to deny Rod Howett a long awaited win and consigning him to yet another second place. But it was Rod’s best score for some while and ensured that his handicap would once again be moving in a downward direction for the coming week at least.

Fred Land made a return to golf with the IPGC with a solid level handicap round to claim third place but needed to be better in a count back with Trevor Schirmer and Jeffrey Bunn, which he was with a return of 19 over the inward half.

Trevor took 4th place as he garnered 6 points on the last six, having tied with Jeffrey at 18 and 11 for the back nine and six respectively leaving Jeffrey in fifth spot.

Al Rolnik and Phil Stevenson shared the second division 2’s pool while Danny Willits had to share with the perennial Barry Winton in the first division.

Prior to the presentations there were welcome backs for Sid Ottaway, Danny Willits, Kenny Priddy and Fred Land together with a farewell for Yasuo Suzuki.

As from the 1st of July the Haven group will depart Soi 13 at the earlier time of 9 am until further notice.

Note. If you would like to play with The Haven group you can contact mobile 082 219 0965 or call in to the hotel at 185 Soi 13 between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the course is arranged and you do not need to sign up prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.30 on Mondays, Wednesday, Fridays and 9.00 a.m. on Sundays on the days you wish to play. A schedule of courses to be played can be found on our web site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Masa struggles least at Eastern Star

IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar

On Monday, 1st August the Pattaya Golf Society visited Eastern Star after more than five months during which time repairs and essential maintenance were carried out and the initial reaction is that the work has been a success.

The course is in better condition than at any time during the last year and the new greens keeper has seen an improvement in the consistency of the greens. Lack of customers has also seen the fairways grow well. The downside was the weather, which was cool, almost chilly and wet, making the course play very long with no run.

Making one of his rare visits to Pattaya Michael Sim showed his weekly rounds with the British Club in Bangkok have consolidated his game with a consistency off the tee. This helped him to 28 points and third place.

Playing partner Wichai Tananusorn is still trying to reignite his game after a month in England and he posted 29 points for second place.

Japanese golfer Masanori Takano performed better than most in the conditions to end with 31 points for the win.

There were no birdie twos and the Booby Bevy went to an out-of-sorts Mr Len. The good news, however, is that Eastern Star is continuing to improve and will be a welcome venue in high season.

Morel makes a meal of Silky Oak

The excellent promotional deal at Silky Oak attracted the Pattaya Golf Society to the province’s newest course on Friday, 5th August to play a Stableford competition on the controversial track. At the moment golfers either love or loathe its quirkiness but it is rapidly proving a hit with PGS members, with its lush fairways and extremely consistent greens, probably the best in the area currently.

Peter Masters had a double cause for celebration as it was his birthday and he also started the seventeen-thousandth round with PGS since its reinvention six years ago. Amazingly he also dropped two shots for the first time in six rounds finishing on 34.

In third place with 36 points each were Masa Takano and Larry Bland, only one point behind second placed Rob Lamond who had his most successful round with the PGS this year. It was truly a reward for the patience of the skilled Australian golfer.

The winner was Jean Morel with 39 points, who is proving hard to beat on the course. The former chef has all the right ingredients for the game with accuracy off the tee and a taste for putting.

Rob Lamond and Paul Bartlett shared the twos pot for their efforts on the par-three seventh and the Booby Bevy went to Peter Masters by way of celebration for his special day. But every day is special on the golf course in the Land of Smiles.

Fred Lands the pot yet again

PSC golf from the Fairways Golf Society

Brian & Ning Neal.

Tuesday, August 2, Siam Country Club

Although it is a lot more expensive than most of the courses around here it is well worth the short journey to play here every once in a while. As usual the course was in pristine condition and we got of spot on time. Everything was run in military fashion with the marshals making sure nobody fell too far behind. So we had a nice clear round that took only 3 & 3/4 hrs instead of the usual 4 to 5 hrs. And we would have finished even earlier if you did not have to have a compulsory golf cart and then not be allowed to take it on the fairways. As so much time is wasted waiting for the caddies to bring you the right club from the golf paths or sending them back to get another club.

Fred Land with just some of his many prizes in the last three weeks.

Anyway, on to the golf and yet again that man Fred Land was the only player to play under par, beating Scott the pro by six strokes. I just don’t know what’s happening with the handicapper at the U.S.G.A. as we have put all Fred’s cards in with half a dozen of them being well under par in the last three weeks. Yet he has only been cut point one of a shot. We have now took matters into our own hands and drastically cut him for our own tournaments until the handicapper sorts it out. And like a true gentleman Fred totally agrees with our decision.

Near pin winners today were: Nicky Clow, Fred Land, Mark Slinn & Andy Mills. Today we experimented and changed the format to just one division with five places and this is how it turned out:

1st Fred Land (15) 40pts

2nd Scott Dobbins (0) 34pts

3rd On Soduk (22) 33pts

4th Tony Duthie (21) 32pts

5th Jon Lay (7) 31pts

Thursday, August 4th, Pleasant valley

Yet another keep it in the family day out with Bryan Neal for once beating his lovely wife Ning to finish in first place. Second place was decided on count back with Ryan McGregor losing out to Ning 19 - 17.

And just to rub salt into the wounds of the other golfers, Ning had three near pins whilst her hubby took the other one. So it really was a family day out.

1st Bryan Neal (20) 38pts

2nd Ning Neal (16) 35pts

3rd Ryan McGregor (13) 35pts

Note: The Fairways is situated at the top of Pattaya Klang on Sukhumvit Road and anyone wishing to play with us can call into the clubhouse and put their names down on the lists provided, or Call Scott on 084 389 2379. Breakfast and transport provided if required.

Parrish wins in paradise

PSC Golf from Tropical Bert’s Beach Bar

The winner on the day, Brian Parrish, with second place Frank Pilkington.

Derek Brook

Tuesday, August 2, Mountain Shadow - Stableford

Just another day out in paradise; however, with the rain of the last few days we just hoped the course would be playable and the rain would hold off. So we met at Bert’s nice and early, then into cars and down to Mountain Shadow without having to fight our way through the rain.

Arriving we were soon booked in at a great rate then onto the first tee, where we were actually playing the course the correct way. And although we were quite a bit early we were able to get straight off. The only drawback was the strong wind that stopped with us the whole way around and the dampness in the course that slowed the ball up. Or so the players thought.

The greens, which in my opinion are the most treacherous on any course, were a little too green, but by the end of the round there were very few golfers that felt they had not been beaten up by them. I cannot remember so many short putts missed or three putted at least.

After being wind blown with a hot sun for over 4 hours, the one thing we all wanted was to get back and jump into a hot shower then slip into the restaurant for bite to eat and a nice cool drink. So what did we get? No power! And, ‘Sorry big accident and no power to come.’

I have been going to play golf here for many years, but never have I been there with soggy clothes, wet and miserable and not been able to get a shower. There have been times when the electricity has not been on, and I have had a cold shower, and why not, but not even a cold shower.

So we all left and took our various ways back. I went home, showered and changed, and went back to Bert’s. Mind the sprays were out for the poor people who did not have a shower at home.

So the winner on the day was Brian Parrish with 39 points and in second place was Frank Pilkington with 35 points. Walter Baechli was in third with 33 points.

Near Pins: Frank Pilkington, Steve Compton, Walter Baechli, and Bill Knight.

Neville bests Dan M on countback at Emerald

Neville outside Kisses Bar.

Backyard Golf Society

Bright sunshine greets us on arrival at Emerald Golf Course for our weekly game with the Backyard Golf Society. We welcomed back Andy Oz, after an absence of a couple of months, and Dangle who took timeout from his stressful work schedule!

Ten players this week in all competitions so three groups set out on time at 8:45 a.m. The round was slowed up somewhat with Bob G and Andy Oz continuously searching for their balls but we still completed in under four hours.

Neville won this week, beating Dan M on countback, both with a total of 33 points. Terry C took the nearest the pin prize and the society would like to wish him all the best on his trip back to the UK. Neville also cleaned up in the skins competition with (11) and JJ (3), Andy M (2), Dan M (2) took the rest.

Down the road afterwards and Andy Oz must be complemented on his time keeping - maybe the trip to the UK did teach him something about punctuality!

Henry Carn’t do no Wong

PSC golf from Lewiinski’s

Barry, Colin and Eddy, Sunday’s runners up.

Sunday, July 31, Green Valley

A Flight

1st Mark Wood (11) 39 pts

2nd Barry Copestake (15) 39 pts

3rd Eddy Beilby (15) 39 pts

B Flight

1st Mike Craighead (19) 38 pts

2nd Brian Wilkinson (16) 35 pts

3rd John Dearden 9200 33 pts

Near pins: No. 4 Peter Henshaw, No. 9 Jez Lees, No. 12 Mark Wood, No. 16 Bill Brochart.

It seemed a quiet week, although the society turned out in its usual solid numbers. Perhaps it was just quiet because one ball was on assignment to Scotland reporting on the four day Strathlene Open.

It took the empanelment of the title slot committee, but when the dust had settled it was deemed the performance of the week was Mark Wood’s three way count back victory in the premier Flight, deserving the klieg lights. (Although this is not always guaranteed.)

Looking up the premier Flight awards podium at Mark was Barry ‘the Boot’ Copestake and Eddy ‘the Eagle’, the later left satang less.

Skipping down to the junior Flight saw Mike ‘the mechanic’ Craighead card a very impressive 38 points for the Flight top spot. Brian Wilkinson was speechless when he found that his 35 points was good only for the silver. If you believe that you will believe anything. There is inadequate space here to pass on his shot for shot description of the round and you should feel blessed that such is the case.

Mark Wood, Yui Bietry and Bill Brochard shared the 2’s pot.

Tuesday, August 2, Eastern Star

A Flight

1st Gerry Power (18) 41 pts

2nd Henry Wrong (24) 37 pts

3rd Eddy Delaney (25) 35 pts

Jerry ‘the Irish Rover’ Power’s score card looked as though he had played another and nearer set of tees, like the reds from the balance of the field, as he was one of only two players to better par on the day. He did so by five points! The only other player to achieve this fete was Henry Wong with a solid 37 points. Eddy Delaney rounded out the Flight a further two shots back.

No 2’s were recorded and will rollover on Wednesday.

1st Henry Wong (24) 37 pts

2nd Greg Bates (12) 37 pts

3rd Colin Davis (14) 35 pts

The week was going to form and the title chosen for this week was doing swimmingly, until someone had to throw a spanner into it, and who better than Henry Wong, and his eternal 24 handicap. (Sorry Mark) Henry had to ride his luck, however, in the following count back that left society regular Greg Bates holding the silver. The Donkey, never far from the pay window, filled the Flight and took home a remarkable rollover 2s pot.

Colin’s tee shot on the par three 17th hole hit the bank on the side of the green, hit a rock on the other side, and came to rest 12 inches from the hole! Say no more.

Friday, August 5, Emerald

A Flight

1st Mike Jeffreys (16) 34 pts

2nd Colin Davis (14) 31 pts

The week concluded with a trip to the favorite of all, the Emerald. Mike ‘The Welsh Wizard’ needed no tricks as his 34 points top scored on the day. Colin ‘The Donkey’ Davis, much to the dismay of all, put a count back schooling over Gerry ‘The Irish Rover’ Power.

No 2’s were recorded so a rollover on Sunday.

Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi 1, Beach Road Soi 13/3 near to Walking Street. Any one wishing to play with us just pop in, and add your name to the list. Otherwise, give Colin a ring on 089 826 0764. Transport is provided.

Barrett takes it home

PSC Phoenix Tuesday/Friday Golf Group

Relaxing at the Relax Bar after winning at golf.

Mike Gerrard

If anyone can remember the day before this game (To help the old Al Zimers in town) it was the Monday 1st August, when not only Pattaya, but most of Thailand experienced one of the worst days rain in history.

One would have thought that after a day like that, the old dreaded lift clean and place rule would have to be implemented. (This is when a lot of players who have problems hitting balls from ordinary lies suddenly find that they can almost tee the ball up on a nice tuft of grass and virtually take a second tee shot from the fairway only…)

Amazing how the scores improve?

However, after a quick inspection the ground seemed to have drained very well (as it always does at Phoenix) and the preferred lie rule was not implemented. A few faces dropped, I can tell you.

This proved to be the right decision when after the game there was not one complaint about mud on the ball.

So, Little (Big hearted) Arthur Barrett (I am old enough to remember a British superstar of Radio days called the same. Big Hearted Arthur Askey) recorded a superb 39 points to win on his last game before going back to Dear old Blighty to earn a few bob.

In joint second place both with 38 points was Stuart Gordon and Duncan McGee.

Only three near pins won today by Arthur Barrett, Graham Ellis (nearly a hole in one) and Clive Robinson.

This left us with four lucky draw prizes donated by The Relax Bar which went to, John Stafford, John Bartley, Graham Richmond and Chris Coffey.

Next week we play for the prestigious KPK Food Services Voucher under Stableford rules.

At present the green fees at Phoenix for non members are 900 baht (Sports day) green fee on Tuesdays and 1,000 baht (as a guest of the members) green fee on a Fridays. So if you would like to join us in the serious fun of playing golf give me a call on 087 091 7565.

Masters in a class of his own

The IPGC Monthly Members’ Tournament

Rayong CC, Wednesday, 3rd August

On Wednesday, 3rd August, a substantial field of IPGC regulars and returning members gathered at Rayong CC for the first IPGC Members’ Tournament of the new season. The revamped format of two flights, the attractive fixed prize fund and the introduction of a lucky draw, heavily sponsored by IPGC, were new initiatives which were all met with approval by the members.

Each monthly member’s tournament will provide winners in both divisions who will go forward to the finals to compete for the Gold and Silver Medals later in the season. In addition the tournaments will also be used to determine the IPGC Gentleman Player of the Year, with between 1 and 15 points to be won in each division every month, dependant on final positions, which will then be aggregated for the year to establish the overall winner. As usual the first division contests a stroke play format whilst the second division play Stableford.

In the first division the competition was very close with a countback deciding the minor placings and Graham Davis’ 37 strokes on the back nine relegated him to third place with net 73 as Rob Lamond’s one-under back nine total gave him second place with the same net return.

The flight winner was Pattaya’s most consistent golfer currently, Peter Masters. His recent last five competition rounds have seen him equal par once and break par four times. This form continued with scores of 39 on the front nine and an uncharacteristic 42 on the back, which saw an unwelcome return by his b๊te noir, “Mr Hosel” which gave him the indignity of a seven on the seventeenth. Elsewhere in his round the usual accuracy and touch remained intact.

The second division played Stableford and things were equally tight again as Ronnie Ramsay took third on countback from Tom McCarthy with 33 points, Tom having lost his way on the back nine after a sparkling outward half of 21 points. In second place was the Haven’s Rod Howett with 34 points whilst the winner was Ted Morris with a splendid 35 point return on the course, with its difficult and recently dressed greens.

In the “twos” competitions there were two birdies for Al Keith, with one each for the Scottish duo of Peter Duncan and Ronnie Ramsay.

After the tournament the golfers enjoyed an excellent presentation buffet at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar in Soi Buakhao, the regular golf base for the PGS. The introduction of the lucky draw gave everyone a share of the fun of the day. The presentation and prizes were generously sponsored as always by the IPGC, and “emcee” for the evening, Len Jones warmly thanked those who had contributed to the success of the day, including the hard working Peung and her staff at Rabbi’s. The official prize-winners are listed below but the full list of results can be seen on the excellent official IPGC website at http://www.ipgc.org

Don Bland tames Rayong Green Valley

PSC Golf from The Golf Club Sports Bar & Grill

Don Bland.

Monday, August 1, Rayong Green Valley - Stableford

1st Don Bland (4) 41 pts

2nd John Emmerson (9) 39 pts (cb)

3rd Dan Avon (14) 39 pts

4th Noel Pittard (4) 37 pts

Our regular Monday fixture was populated with 18 of Pattaya’s finest clubbers, which for low season was a decent turnout. The skies above were “fontoc boy-boy” as the locals say and by the time we got to the course it had turned out beautiful. Right now, Green Valley is in tip-top shape so there should be no excuses for not shooting well here.

The Australians were out here in full force and being the tough competitors they are, we were in for a battle royal as Noel, Don, Steve and resident Sugar Ray were our mates representing the Southern Hemisphere.

As it turned out, Don Bland was anything but and turned in his card with a big 41 circled at the top. Well played Don - and also good luck to you and Noel up in Siam Reap as well.

John Emmerson beat Don Avon on count back with 39 as Noel Pittard just missed out with his 37, good but not quite enough Noel!

There is great camaraderie on a trip like this one to Soi Dao.

Wednesday, August 3, Phoenix - Stableford

1st Peter Fagerlund (23) 40 pts

2nd Chris Parr (19) 35 pts

3rd Roger Verville (12) 33 pts

It is so nice to hop over to a course in less than 30 minutes and that is one huge benefit of Phoenix. After the recent rains and wind the course was a little leafy but the greens-keeping staff were out taking care of the carnage. The heat was a factor today and my fellow walkers were starting to question the decision to go cartless on the day. We survived, but next time a buggy would be in order for sure.

Scandie visitor Peter Fagerlund was sensible and took the cart option and maybe it helped him to score the 40 points to be our winner on the day. Peter is a big lad and his game should improve quickly with a few lessons, so watch out!

Chris Parr is a regular visitor to Pattaya from upcountry and a recent addition to The Golf Club gang and we are glad to have Chris on board. Chris was kind enough to get in a round of drinks before heading out to the airport. We quickly headed back to The Golf Club for our Wednesday Steak Night and a few bevvies, of course.

Friday, August 5, Treasure Hill - Stableford

1st Steve Grant (9) 35 pts

2nd Henry O’Brien (19) 32 pts

3rd David Shelton (7) 27 pts

After last month’s PSC Monthly Medal here we just had to come back. Apparently the Saha Group recently bought the course and we observed a great deal of work being done by several dozen staff. There are lots of new but mature tree plantings, improved or new cart paths and decorative features as well being attended to. The only thing I would attack straight away is the 18th green. Get your approach shot close to the pin and it won’t be an issue! I am sure this repair is on their agenda, so be patient, it will be worth the wait.

The course was designed by Yoshikazu Kato who also designed the legendary Blue Canyon in Phuket and Kabinburi Sport Club where we will be on our road trip in early September. Treasure Hill is a great track and if you have not played here you really should put it on your list.

You can’t make many mistakes on this course and expect to win, and Steve Grant did little wrong on the day. The greens proved faster than they looked but not a problem for Mr. Grant.

Someone who shall go unmentioned took a choked down driver on the 215yd 2nd par 3 and stuck it to 8 feet, then sunk the birdie putt only to find out we did not have a 2’s comp on the day. No, it wasn’t Seamless this time, he was up at Soi Dao.

We returned Friday afternoon to The Golf Club in a mere 40 minutes door-to-door, well worth the trip and good luck to Treasure Hill in their improvements to this great course.

August 2 - 4, Soi Dao Highlands Road Trip

It was a busy week for The Golf Club as in addition to our Pattaya schedule, we also ventured out once again to Soi Dao for the monthly road trip. Teacher Jez was the main instigator for this outing and had to get another trip in before school starts. It turned out to be a good idea.

Timing is everything and after loads of rain last week, the ground was moist and springy but not a drop touched a head on the trip as the clouds lifted to a beautiful week in the mountains. The hills were so alive you could almost hear Julie Andrews!

There is great camaraderie on a trip like this and everyone pitches in with wine and cheese, nibbles for apr่s golf, and a few litres of quality spirits.

It was so good to see Papa Mikey Craighead back with us to show Soi Dao rookie Dale Shier the lay of the land on this Dennis Griffiths (Phoenix, Thai C.C.) designed layout. Soi Dao is a special place and this trip was very special for Roger Kohler and Bob Newell as they glided along over the three day tour with some of their best golf seen recently to demolish the competition. Well played lads!

Tour Tip: Soi Dao Highlands has a low season special of 2,200 baht for a single golfer that includes 2 days unlimited golf green fees from check-in and 1 night hotel room with breakfast, a great deal at a great course.

Thanks to all for participating in this week’s fixtures, and don’t forget to check us out on facebook/golfclubpattaya for updates, musings, and scandals in general.

The Golf Club is located on Soi LK Metro, off Soi Buakhao and Soi Diana junction. We can be reached on 085 434 3377 or pattaya4golf @gmail.com and our is www.golfclubpattaya.com.

Crash helmets will be issued next week

Jomtien Golf with the IPGC

Monday, August 1,
Mountain Shadow - Stableford

The weather is a bit dubious as we head up on the seven towards Mountain Shadow but as we arrive the clouds disperse slightly and everyone enjoys a good round of golf in gentle conditions.

There are only two divisions out today and the cut is 7-20 in division 1 and 21 plus in division 2. The French boy, Jean Morel wins division 1 with 32 points and Peter Seward is second one point behind.

After three weeks off duty from his employment in Kazakhstan, Tom Novak, playing off 24 wins division 2 with 40 points. Brian Ferringo is in second place with 24, beating Ian Hart on a 15/11 back nine countback.

Friday, August 5,
Eastern Star - Stableford

Our busiest day of the week with seven groups out today. Everybody’s opinion is that the Eastern Star greens are still improving each week. As we have more than 24 players, nearest the pins come into play. It is a very hot day here with hardly any breeze whatsoever.

In division 1 today the cut is 7-17 and 18 plus in division 2 and 34 is the best score recorded in both divisions. Jon Lay wins division 1 with 34 points. Barry Copestake comes second one point behind and Bill Bertram is third with 31 points beating Frank McGowan and Tony Thorne on a 17/16/14 back nine countback.

The organiser takes podium position in division 2 with 34 as well. In second place on 33 and always hitting a different fairway from where the tee is placed, Mr. Zig Zag alias Cully Monks is second with 33. Crash helmets will be issued next week to the groups in front of him. Tony Holehouse is third on 31.

A memorable day for Jon Lay playing off 7 taking three nearest the pins in division 1 and the only two as well. Glyn Evans and Jim Lane get rewarded for nearest the pins on the 3rd and 13th while there are no two’s in the second division.

Teds’ win starts off the week

Sat winners: Liam Horgan, Richard Moore, Rob Herald, Gary Hookey, and Ted Senior (inset).

Barry Hooper

Golf from the Travellers Rest

Ted Senior was the first winner of the week in what turned out to be a low scoring affair on our first visit back to Eastern Star in some time. Richard Talbot was second and Liam Horgan started with a third spot on his first outing upon returning to Thailand for his regular annual visit. He also managed to repeat that placing on the following Saturday at Greenwood.

Tuesday was a visit to Rayong Green Valley, which is not one of the easiest courses about. But Noel Pittard mastered it for the win at 36 and was followed in by Richard Talbot at 34 for what was his second second-place finish in two consecutive days. Arnold Jones was third at 33.

But this was obviously a warm up for Arnold because he came out on Thursday at Phoenix and took the win with 38. Two up on Joe Duffy and Fergus Brennan.

The high scorer of the week was Rob Herald at 39 in what was his best game ever at the TRGG when he visited Greenwood on the Saturday.

Gary Hookey found himself two back at 37 for second along with Liam Horgan and Richard Moore.

Count back being used as the determinator.

No real interesting stories again this week. They all seem to be behaving themselves which is somewhat disturbing and very unusual.

Monday, August 1,

Philbrook streak broken as Paul Daud wins 2011 Jackalope Open

2011 Canadian Jackalope Champion Paul Daud (right) is handed the perpetual trophy by Dale Drader.

After a week of rain in the Pattaya area, Friday August 5th started with clear skies as 115 golfers made their way to the Khao Kheow Country Club for the 13th annual Jackalope Open - dedicated to our good friend Shawn “Hoser” Field.

Registration opened at 10:30 and after checking in most of the players headed for their favorite spots - the Caesar table for the Canadian breakfast speciality and the 50-50 table for the much wanted raffle tickets.

By 11:30 everyone headed out to the golf course ready for the noon shotgun start. Much anticipation hung in the air as individuals prepared their minds towards a good round; of course some of the golfers were thinking when they would see the first beer cart.

At 12:00 the shotgun was fired and the golfers were off, a true test of golf on the still damp fairways. Many a golfer had their energy revived at the turn, being treated to delicious sandwiches created and distributed by the lovely staff of Rich Man Poor Man.

The field moved around A & B courses with not too many hold ups encountered and after just five hours the first groups arrived back at the club house.

The golfers were treated to a splendid buffet provided by the Khao Kheow staff while they waited for their scorecard to be checked and tabulated.

Hong Prathumtip won the Ladies Division with an outstanding 43 points.

Mark Gorda - wearing his now world famous Jackalope jacket (a black one for this year) kicked off with the 50/50 Draw prizes donated by AKA Traders Company, Allied Pickfords (Thailand), Black Star Jewellery, Brad Sproxton - The Golf Club, Cafe Kronberg, Dale Drader & Ray Lepard, Rich Wibrow and Rich Man Poor Man before moving on to the technical and division awards.

Due to circumstances beyond our control, many of the technical prize winners were lost but we did manage to save a few.

Long drives were won by Keith Emmerson, Moe Deverdenne, Hong Prathumtip and Bobby Taylor.

Low gross of 81 for the day was won by Doug Lynch.

Some of the near pins were won by Jimmy Little, Captain Bob, Bond Phillips, Ty Kerr, Rich Wibrow, John Gibson, Mamo Kerr, Hong Prathumtip, and Rodney Hayes.

The nearest the keg was won by Dave Stockman.

The Ladies division runner up was Rak Jongruk with 35 points. First place in the Ladies division was won by Hong Prathumtip with an outstanding 43 points.

In the Rabbits division, Neil Sandilands finished runner up with 31 points, whilst winning the Rabbits division was Christoph Rechsteiner with 36 points. Some unbelievable points scored in the Rabbits division this year.

Division 3 third place was won by Andy Makara with 31 points, second place was won by Rick Moran with 31 points and first place went to Bond Phillip with 36 points.

Division 2 third place was won by Steve Poznanski with 33, second place went to Norman Cheetmam and first place went to John Styimest with 37 points.

Jack Levy watches as his lengthy putt tracks towards the hole.

Division 1 third place went to Tony Robbins with 34 points, second place went to Ty Kerr with 34 points and first place went to Colin Greig with 37 points.

Low gross of 81 for the day was won by Doug Lynch.

The 2011 Canadian Jackalope Champion is Paul Daud with 38 points.

Following the awards the much anticipated final 50-50 draw prize was picked with the winner receiving half of the total 196,000 baht collected on the day, and that lucking individual was none other than Simon Philbrook who generously returned 50% back into the charity.

Mark Gorda and Mr. X, in their never ending quest to generate funds for the tournament, have pledged to donate 2,000 baht for every birdie and 10,000 baht for every eagle scored on the day. This year’s tournament recorded 28 birdies and one eagle.

Mike “Dabber” Dabonovich crushes a drive straight down the middle.

Thanks go to all the staff at Khao Kheow Country Club for their excellent service provided on the day. We would also like to thank the following businesses and individuals who either donated their time and staff or helped to raise an outstanding amount in excess of 400,000 for the 2011 charity fund - AKA Traders, Allied Pickfords (Thailand), Ann & Dale Drader, Baltex Industries, Barry Evans, Black Star Jewellery, Bobby Taylor, Brent & Tanya Westendorf, Brent Froh, Cafe Kronberg, Curt Walters, Dale McFadden, Dan Buchinski, Dave Sloan, Derek Reaper, Donnie Barker, Eddie Kristiansen, Gary Oxley, Gordon Duncan, Harald Benning, Hull Co. Ltd., Jay McKenzie, JD Loveladdy, Jesters M.C., Joe Ernst, Kelly Caron, Ken Cooke, Kennedy Consulting Thailand Ltd., Kevin Blanch, KPK Food Services, Las Vegas Bar, Little Britain Merchants, Mark Campbell, Mark Gorda, Mark Holcomb, Mark Mosely, Matt Millar, Michael O’Halloran, Mike Peeters, Mike Sumpter, Mike’s Mexican Restaurant, Moe Deverdenne, NCS Marine, Neil Sandilands, Pattaya Mail, Pattaya Sports Club, Randy Whalley, Ray Lepard, Rich Man Poor Man Guest House, Rich Wibrow, Rick Moran, Rob Elder, Roger Allen, Simon Emberley, Stephan Hoge, Tahitian Queen, The Beaver Bar, The Blue Parrot, The Golf Club - Brad Sproxton, The Haven - Steven Beard, The Kerr Family (Jason, Mamo, Muffy & Ty), The Links - Russell Exley, The Palm Tree Restaurant & Bar - Glen Fiala, Todd Sherbaniuk, Tom Christman, Malcolm Clair and Wayne Ogonoski.

We would also like to thank all the individuals who helped out at the registration and scoring, Eddie’s staff for the sandwich snacks, the Caesar table “All Star Mixers”, the 50-50 ticket sellers and all the cart drivers who kept the golfers well stocked with their favorite “refreshments”.

The Jackalope is not just about golf, it is also about giving back to the local community. On this 13th year of the Canadian Jackalope Open we will again be joining with the Jesters Care For Kids to help provide much needed assistance to the poor or disadvantaged children in the area.
