Pattaya Sports Club
Bowling League
200 Bowlers: Kran and
Ooy.
Bavaria won all four points from first
place Brother D and is now only four points behind Brother D along with VFW
and Green Tree. Aht Johansson, Bavaria, managed a 500 series but all the
other scores were low.
Ooy Pluemkamon bowled a 202 game, 547 series and Tui
Amphanon also had a 547 series to lead VFW Post 9876 to a four point win
over Canada. VFW moved from third to second place (based on total pins) and
Canada dropped from sixth to seventh place.
Caf้ Kronborg split their match with Mitt in 2012 with
each team gaining two points but that was enough for Kronborg to move up
from sixth to fifth place. Mitt in 2012 moved up from seventh to sixth
place. Caf้ Kornberg’s Captain Kran Nielsen bowled a 201 game and 550
series.
Last place Indiana won three points from Green Tree as
all bowlers had trouble with lanes 13 and 14 and scores were low.
Pattaya Sports Club Fishing Report
Capt. Dene
Thursday, June 28, was our third trip for the month due
to 2 cancellations caused by high winds and discharge of northern Thai flood
waters at Bangkok.
Dene with a doubleheader.
Five of us set out from Khram Marine under an overcast
sky and with slightly choppy seas with the captain warning us of heavy going
after rounding the last island and heading into unprotected waters. He was
right, as we encountered big swells in the morning which abated somewhat in
the afternoon and made fishing conditions somewhat difficult.
Nevertheless, fishing was considerably better than our
last trip on 7 June and our bag catches of pla-dang, snapper and grouper
averaged around four to six kilos each. No big greys were caught this trip
so I have included a photo from a trip last month.
As winds are expected to abate in the near future we hope
fishing conditions improve in the second half of the year.
Several of the regular members are exploring a trip in
July seeking larger fish departing from a small seaport (name unknown)
halfway between Sattahip and Ban Chang. Will let you know the results.
Trips for July vary from the usual schedule due to the
mid-year PSC Party and are as follows: Saturday 14 July, Thursday 19 July,
and Saturday 28 July. Contact Dene Mundy on 081 862 6279 for bookings.

Bo on top at Khao Kheow
PSC Golf from The Growling Swan
Peter Blackburn
Monday, July 2, Khao Kheow B & C – Stableford
One annoying “no show” and one late inclusion left us
with a very good field of 21 starters and we assembled at The Growling Swan
in readiness for the journey to the very popular Khao Kheow Golf Couse.
Peter Blackburn & Bo
Cardwell.
We welcomed a very good friend of mine Gerry Arthur from
Gosnells Golf Club in Perth, Western Australia and also Joe Doyle from
Queensland, Australia. Sadly it was time to say farewell to Andrew Allen’s
son Rhys whose holiday is just about over and he will shortly be returning
to Melbourne, Australia.
Once again we departed on schedule at 8.30 am in 2
minivans and in just 41 minutes arrived at the course to find a bit of
activity but it was obvious we would be able to commence earlier than our
allotted tee time. Our first group of myself, Hunter, Gerry Arthur & Don
Richardson teed off at 9.52 am which was 16 minutes ahead of schedule and in
perfect weather for golf set about enjoying this fine course which is
certainly getting back to its best. There were a few rough patches on some
of the fairways but mostly marked G.U.R. so relief was allowed and the
greens were terrific & at times fairly slick.
Hunter started with a “bang” and had 2 birdies in the
first 6 holes while Don and I plugged away steadily and Gerry was struggling
whilst trying to adapt to the Thai conditions after a 10 year absence from
playing golf here. It was getting very hot & humid so several drinks stops
were necessary but even so we managed to complete the full round in four
hours & 10 minutes. The heat had taken its toll over the last half a dozen
holes as the scoring diminished although somehow I managed to hang on and
finished quite well.
With the 21 starters we had just the one grade and there
were rewards for nearest the pins on the four par threes plus nearest first
putts on the ninth & eighteenth greens. Part sponsorship for the novelties
was kindly provided by Mike Gosden.
As we had seven players who not yet had handicaps they
were put in a secondary grade which we named the Callaway Grade and their
scores were calculated using the Callaway Scoring System.
Yours truly fell short of making it four wins in a row
and finished second, 2 points behind the winner on the day Bo Cardwell who
had a fine 38 points. In third place came Don Richardson with 33 points
(after a 20 point first nine) and a count back for fourth place saw Jo Doyle
(17 point back nine) take the last podium spot from Ken “let’s hear it for”
Bernek (15 point back nine) with both on 32 points.
In the Callaway Grade another count back was needed with
2 players on 33 points. Bernie McCart (17 point back nine) was the winner
with Vince Romeo (16 point back nine) in second place and in a major
breakthrough our popular Growling Swan host Peter Grey took third spot with
31 points.
Ken Bernek, Peter Blackburn,
Gerry Arthur with Deefa & Martin Todd.
1st Bo Cardwell (23) 38pts
2nd Peter Blackburn (12) 36pts
3rd Don Richardson (13) 33pts
4th Jo Doyle (18) 32pts
Callaway Comp.
1st Bernie McCart 33pts
2nd Vincent Romeo 33pts
3rd Peter Grey 31pts
Near Pins: B3 – Mike Gosden; B8 – Peter Blackburn; C3
– Bo Cardwell; C8 – Bo Cardwell
Long Putts: B9 – Joe Doyle; C9 – Gerry Arthur
The winner of the Compass Cap (awarded for the worst
score of the day) went to Scotsman Sandy Leiper and Hunter paraded Deefa the
Dog who of course collected many donations to charity from our very generous
Growling Swan crew. It was also time for Hunter to present the Monthly
Awards for June which were as follows:
Consistency Award – Mike Gosden.
A-Hole Award (named after Heineken Stu) – Bo Cardwell.
Monthly Compass Award – Jerry Dobbs.
Thursday, July 5, Pattana, B & C – Stableford
We had a full field of 24 until the last minute when
someone called in sick and unfortunately it was too late to call upon our
“first reserve” but a field of 23 was more than satisfactory for this time
of year. It had been quite a while since most of us had played Pattana and I
for one was looking forward to re-visiting this fine venue, particularly as
we had 550 baht Green Fee vouchers purchased from Pattaya Sports Club.
Assembling at The Growling Swan prior to departure we
welcomed back Martin Todd from Mandurah in Western Australia, local veteran
Kevin Dinan, Neil Skilton who now intends to make Pattaya his base and
George Hayes, formerly from Sydney but now a Pattaya resident. Sadly it was
time to farewell by good mate Gerry Arthur who is off to Bangsaray & Caleo
for a week’s “R & R” before returning to Perth and Joe Doyle who is
returning to Brisbane after his annual month’s holiday here.
We departed the G.S. a couple of minutes after our
scheduled 8.30 am time in two minivans and after 48 minutes arrived at the
course and we were able to register fairly quickly as there was this time no
necessity for them to photocopy each individual PSC Member’s Cards. There
was a groan from the men’s locker room as “Heineken” Stu discovered that his
golf shoes were not in his bag but absolved himself of all responsibility
for it by blaming his partner, Yung (not sure how that works).
There was not a great deal of activity on the course and
after being allocated B & C nines we were invited to tee off at our leisure.
At 9.47 am which was 13 minutes ahead of schedule, yet another Gosnells Golf
Club four-ball hit off first consisting of myself, Hunter, Toddy and the
departing Gerry Arthur. The weather was overcast with rain clouds looming
and it was fairly hot & humid with not much wind but we were confident the
rain would stay away and apart from seventeen small drops of rain early on
we remained completely dry.
The course was in fabulous “nick” with super quick greens
on the front nine although the greens on C nine had residual sand on them
but still of a very high standard.
Toddy jumped out of the blocks with 2 birdies in the
first 4 holes but like the rest of us settled down and played fairly steady
golf although once more Gerry Arthur was struggling with his game but
enjoying himself nevertheless. We were playing at a very good pace and
finished B nine in just on 2 hours and after a couple of drink stops on the
second nine we completed the round in four hours and seven minutes. The
course was playing quite long off the white tees and many of us struggled as
was proved by the fact that not one golfer played to their handicap or
better.
Having a good number of players enabled us to split into
2 grades with A Grade for handicaps 0 to 15 and B Grade for 16 and over.
There were nearest the pins on the four par threes with Gerry Arthur
assisting with sponsorship and Martin Todd provided golf balls for winners
of the longest first putts on B9 & C9.
After freezing his “you know whats” off in Western
Australia for the last couple of months Martin Todd quickly adapted to the
Pattaya climate and after a count back with 2 players on 35 points, his 18
point back nine enabled him to win the A Grade from your writer who had a 16
point back nine. In third spot with a gross 76 came Mike Allidi with 34
points and that consistent player Mashi Kanata squeezed onto the podium in
fourth place with 33 points.
Another count back was required to decide the B Grade
winner with Ken “let’s hear it for” Bernek (20 point back nine) just beating
Jerry Dobbs (17 point back nine) with both golfers on 35 points. The
consistent Bo Cardwell came third with 31 points and Dave Norman from the A
Team Bar finished fourth with 30 points.
A Flight (0-15)
1st Martin Todd (8) 35pts
2nd Peter Blackburn (12) 35pts
3rd Mike Allidi (2) 34pts
4th Mashi Kaneta (11) 33pts
B Flight (16+)
1st Ken Bernek (16) 35pts
2nd Jerry Dobbs (23) 35pts
3rd Bo Cardwell (23) 31pts
4th Dave Norman (18) 30pts
Near Pins: B3 – Mashi Kaneta; B7 – Dave Norman; C2 –
Stu Rifkin; C7 – Bo Cardwell
First Putts: B9 – Mashi Kaneta; C9 – Stu Rifkin
The winner of the Compass Cap (awarded for the worst
score of the day) went to the departing Gerry Arthur who was delighted that
his name would be in print as a winner of something and Hunter paraded Deefa
the Dog who of course collected many donations to charity from our very
generous Growling Swan crew.
Then it was back to The Growling Swan where we celebrated
yet another successful day of golf with some very cold beers. Peter Grey
appeared to have recovered from his hangover due to the State of Origin
decider of the previous night and was in fine form with both tongue and
drinking arm.
Note: Growling Swan Golf welcomes golfers of any
persuasion – low & high handicappers alike, female golfers and beginners. We
generally play Mondays & Thursdays, meeting at The Growling Swan (formerly
The Bunker Bar) in Soi Chaiyapoon at 8.00 am with transport departing at
8.30 am. For bookings or more information please contact Peter on 0806 351

Independence Day ‘4-Man 49’ makes history
PSC golf from The Golf Club
“The 49ers” - Bob Newell, Joe
Mooneyham and Gavin Perfect searching for Ernie Hill.
Steve Ellison
Monday, July 2, Green Valley (White tees) – Stableford
A Flight
1st Colin Davis (14) 40pts
2nd Salvatore Brizzi (6) 39pts
3rd Phil Page (11) 36pts
B Flight
1st Jim Elphick (23) 35pts
2nd Henry O’Brien (20) 34pts
3rd Mick Folan (17) 33pts
Darren, Simon, Chaten and
Steve.
Green Valley has been in great shape lately, and it
turned out to be the perfect venue for our monthly contest against the lads
at Lewiinski’s. We had a good turnout today for a low season event and were
looking forward to the match with our mates from Pattayaland. As the greens
crew have been working on the cart paths recently, until they are finished
we treat those new paths as G.U.R., just for the record.
It looks like we were both outnumbered and outgunned for
this month’s comp against Monica’s finest. Henry O’Brien was our saviour and
kept us from the shame of a total whitewash on the podium for the 2 flights
as he pulled off a 2nd place finish with 34 points. We
must congratulate Colin Davis (so as to appear to be gracious in defeat) for
his 40 points on the day, well played mate! We all headed back to The Golf
Club for our BBQ and presentation, albeit it a tearful one.
Joe Mooneyham.
Wednesday, July 4, The Emerald (White tees) – 4-Man
Scramble
1st Joe Mooneyham, Gavin Perfect,
Bob Newell, Ernie Hill, net 49.3
2nd Bob Watson, Max Scott, Dave
Hutchison, Barry Elphick, net 55.3
3rd Chaten Patel, Simon Philbrook,
Darren Allcock, Steve Mascari, net 55.6
Firstly, thanks to all who participated in this inaugural
charity event, the 4th of July 4-Man Scramble and the
support from our fellow golf societies of Steve Mascari, Shane Ruddle, and
Russell Exley. Bob Newell was the hero of the day as he raced back from down
south to run the event and made it all run smoothly for the gathered masses.
This is a story of a history making round of golf, the
likes of which we defy all to beat. Just 54 strokes were needed to go round
Emerald today for four golfers who had the game of their lives. 25 were
taken on the front nine alone. Throw in a hole-in-one and that should tell
you how amazing of a round the 4 lads now called “The 49ers” had this 4th
of July. Two Yanks and two Brits celebrated their mutual Independence Day by
making golf history in Pattaya, and by raising over 30,000 baht for our
charity “Hand 2 Hand”.
The team of Joe Mooneyham, Bob Newell, Gavin Perfect and
Ernie Hill had the ideal partnership of combined talents; long drives, sharp
short game and accuracy on the greens for their victory here today. P.S.C.
Golf Chairman Mooneyham had his 4th hole-in-one on
this 4th of July by taking just one swing off the tee
on the 15th at Emerald and used the contours of the
green to roll the ball into that little 4.25 inch circle. Ernie Hill was
pounding the ball over 300 yards for his maximum drives and Gav and Bob were
chipping and putting demons as they looked at the scorecard after nine holes
with only 25 shots taken.
TGC gals Nat, Duen, Koy and
Ying welcome all at the 4th of July bash.
The back nine started all wrong. On the 10th,
Ernie drove over the green but his ball was selected as an up-and-down
looked rather straightforward. The chip stopped at just over 2 feet from the
hole but all four putts for birdie lipped out and a par was taken on the
shortest par 4 on the course. Composure was gathered and the rest of the
round got back on track with a 29 for the back nine score.
Eight lads were already waiting back at the clubhouse,
looking good and feeling quite content with themselves, but wouldn’t you if
you brought home a 55.3 or a 55.6? Those scores would normally be good
enough for the trophy on any normal day, but this was no normal day for “The
49ers”. History had been made and our congratulations go out to them for
this amazing victory.
Back at The Golf Club, balloons were being strung up, the
fire was started, the food was getting laid out for the presentation and
party for the first annual 4th of July 4-Man Scramble.
Johnny Clements was singing the classics for us and the wine was flowing for
the great party afterwards.
Margie explained to all attending the activities of Hand
2 Hand and the slum kids and immigrant children they help, many being just
tiny babies with no other assistance available. For more information or
donations contact Margaret Grainger at [email protected] or call 089 093
6067.
Lastly, don’t sign up for a 4-Man scramble if you do not
intend to show up. Remember, three other guys are waiting and depending on
you to get yer arse out of bed and be part of a good team effort. Nuff said.
Reminder: We have our monthly Road Trip to Kabinburi on
the 17th & 18th July so email us
or drop by to sign up soon!
The Golf Club is located on Soi LK Metro. We play on
Monday, Wednesday and Friday so come join us for a seriously fun day out.

Members take top prize in Mark’s ‘Birthday Bash’
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar
Monday, July 2, Khao Kheow
- Stableford
There were only six Outbackers today playing B & C but
with very little wind and an overcast day it seemed a perfect day to play
golf. The staff were very pleased to see us and we managed to tee off on B
20 minutes early; the first three holes were undergoing weeding on the
fairways so we decided to pick and place, although it seemed that the rest
of B course was fine except that the tee boxes needed cutting.
John O’Keefe & On Lloyd -
second with 49pts in Friday’s Birthday Bash.
On C course a couple of the greens had previously been
sabotaged but appear to have been rectified now and generally the greens
were pretty slick throughout the 18 holes we played. Unfortunately, there
were a few holes where the fairways were GUR but in another few weeks the
course should be back in good shape but in all fairness we should give the
staff credit for the amount of time and effort they spend on trying to
improve the course.
Without further ado, congrats are in order to Suzi Lawton
(39pts) for winning the day from Rob Earle (37) and John Stafford (31) and
welcome back to them both.
There was only one ‘2’ and Suzi got that as well.
1st Suzi Lawton (17) 39pts
2nd Rob Earle (23) 37pts
3rd John Stafford (18) 31pts
Monday, July 2, Burapha – Stableford
At Burapha today for our normal Monday outing and
although in the middle of a quiet low season, we still managed 19 players.
We played B and D which is a little unusual; as normally with A & B it’s
from the blue tees and with C & D, it’s from the whites. So to even it up,
we played B from blue tees and D from the white tees but it didn’t affect
the scores as the first five places all played to handicap or better.
Mark is seen receiving his
birthday cake.
B course was in great condition and the greens were
especially good but D course greens have not fully recovered from recent
renovations and were a little bumpy and slow.
The pace of play was great for the first eight holes but
then we caught up with a 5-ball and things slowed down but we still managed
to complete the course in under 4 hours. The day started off very muggy and
overcast but cleared up early and then we had clear skies and a lovely
breeze to keep the conditions, great for golf.
The day belonged to Andy Makara who had the best score of
the day (41pts) and played some great golf off his 27 handicap which has
quickly been reduced to 25. One of the Kiwis, Dion Lane, who struggled with
his game when he first arrived, continued to show improvement with 37pts to
beat Paul Bourke with the same score, on count back.
Paul Greenaway and Barnsey filled the remaining podium
places with 36pts each.
There were two ‘2’s from Barnsey and John Cunningham.
1st Andy Makara (27) 41pts
2nd Dion Lane (11) 37pts
3rd Paul Bourke (9) 37pts
4th Paul Greenaway (9) 36pts
5th Robert Barnes (13) 36pts
Tuesday, July 3, Pattaya C.C. – Stableford
On the way to golf this morning it felt more like a warm
summer’s day in England with that persistent light drizzle which doesn’t go
away rather than Thailand and we can never be sure what it’s going to turn
into here. Well, fortunately nothing and after a few holes it cleared up
altogether albeit a little muggy.
PCC were once again happy to see us with our seven
players and the other three we saw on the course and that was just about it,
so a lovely pace of play on greens that were good but on fairways that
appeared desperately short of rain, but were already greening up from the
rain overnight.
General Jack was out again for the second week in a row
and scraped in with a win after chipping in for par on the last hole to make
34pts and beating Dave Earthrowl on count back.
1st Jack Moseley (20) 34pts
2nd David Earthrowl (21) 34pts
3rd Barry Chadbourn (19) 31pts
Tuesday, July 3, Laem Chabang – Stableford
It was an overcast day and spitting with rain with just
10 at Laem Chabang, to play the just reopened A nine together with B. A
disappointing number considering the excellent rate to play here, just 1900
Baht incl cart and we’ve just upped the number of tee times to five!
B Course has been closed for the last couple of months so
we were pleased to see that it had recovered well from all the work they had
done to it; the fairways were good but the rough was deep in parts and the
greens were as good as ever, making putting a challenge to us all.
However, the course played quite easy (well for some of
us) from forward tees but both Sel and Barnsey put excellent rounds together
scoring 41pts and 40pts respectively and have been suitable cut despite
protestations that the course played short.
There was just one ‘2’ from Mike Missler.
1st Sel Wegner (13) 41pts
2nd Robert Barnes (13) 40pts
3rd Mike Missler (12) 36pts
Wednesday, July 4, Siam Plantation – Stableford
What a bizarre start to our day at Plantation; John Low,
after signing in, went to pick up his bag from just outside the office, lost
his footing and took a swim in the ornamental pond near the door. Not
content to just step in, he fell and was wet from head to toe, suffice to
say that all those present including the staff had a great laugh at John’s
expense.
After that the day just got better as the course was in
great condition and some of the scores showed that the players are
definitely responding to the great challenge that Siam presents. 15
Outbackers played C (Pineapple) and A (Sugar Cane) off the white tees and as
usual the starters were very efficient and we all teed off on time and
completed our round in just under four hours even though our front group
caught up with a five-ball but the marshalls were there to make sure
everybody kept up.
Tim Knight continues to improve in Thailand and with the
best score of the day of 40 points on his 17 handicap has now been cut to 16
and Tim is now on the lowest he has ever been - well done Tim.
Jim Bryan is a great lover of Siam and is now becoming
something of a specialist at the course, posting another excellent score of
37pts, which included a great two on A6, whilst Dion Lane (11) and Ron
Dickie (7) both put in consistent rounds to fill the minor places with 36
points and 35 points respectively.
There were two ‘2’s; one from Jim, mentioned before, and
the other from John Player on C8.
1st Tim Knight (17) 40pts
2nd Jim Bryan (16) 37pts
3rd Dion Lane (11) 36pts
4th Ron Dickie (7) 35pts
Wednesday, July 4, Pattana – Stableford
With lowest of low seasons upon us, it’s difficult to
predict and maintain numbers at the wide choice of golf courses on offer
each week; clearly illustrated by just 4 Outbackers travelling to Pattana
today.
Once we arrived and checked in, we had the course to
ourselves yet again and started twenty minutes early. The A course was in
good condition after it had been closed for a while but the greens could
have been better i.e. rolled and cut, as they were bumpy and slowwww,
whereas on B course the greens were like ice.
I don’t think any of our four ball could fault the
overall course condition and it’s excellent value with a green fee voucher
and definitely worth the drive.
1st Murray Hart (14) 32pts
2nd Suzi Lawton (17) 29pts
3rd John O’Keefe (17) 27pts
4th Robert Barnes (12) 26pts
Friday, July 6,
Green Valley – Pairs Stableford
44 Outbackers played in Mark McDonald’s (Tubz’) 4BBB
(pairs stableford) Birthday Bash at Green Valley at the new tee off time of
9.30. Unfortunately we didn’t tee off on time due to the starters allowing a
late two-ball to take their place on the tee, but at least once we got
started the field flowed and most groups completed the course in under four
hours.
The course itself was in good condition but the greens
are very slow, especially compared to Siam Plantation, Laem Chabang and
Burapha and have actually got slower over the last few weeks. The new cart
paths are nearly finished but there are still a large number of areas that
should be marked GUR and common sense must prevail, as none of the areas are
marked appropriately.
This (2-ball pairs) is another great format which allows
the two players in the team to play their own game and own shot for the
complete round, unlike a scramble, yet allows some relief knowing that you
have a partner to back you up, if you screw up. It’s particularly helpful on
the greens when one of the team is already down for so many points and it
allows the other player a free hit, not having to worry about the putt back.
Some great scores were recorded with the winners coming
from two Green Valley specialists/members, Jack Butler and Ed Horrocks who
combined extremely well for an amazing 51 points and won a novelty prize as
well for the most number of holes under par (13).
Second was the pairing of John O’Keefe & On Lloyd with
49pts and third were Terry Phur & Gerry Power with 48pts and they beat David
Dunstan & Bob Barnes on count back. Absolutely incredible scoring, with 15
of the 22 teams scoring 40pts or more!
As well as the prizes for the most holes under par, Mark
also sponsored 500 Baht vouchers for the four near pins won by; David Day
(hole 4), Pete Stonebridge (hole 9), Dave Dunstan (hole 12) and Wayne
Cotterill (hole 16). The NAGA prize went to Greg Hirst & Lee Rigglesworth.
There were six ‘2’s; two on hole 4 from Paul Greenaway &
Greg Hirst; one on both holes 9 & 16 from Robert Barnes & Bob Lindborg and
two more on hole 12 from Ed Horrocks & Mark McDonald.
Other stats: Best Aggregate Score Front Nine (26pts) Rob
Earle & Barry McIntosh; Back Nine (27pts) Jack Butler & Ed Horrocks; Par 5’s
(14pts) Robert Barnes & David Dunstan; Par 4’s (27pts) Dion Lane & John Low;
Par 3’s (13pts) Jack Butler & Ed Horrocks.
Overall Results
1st Jack Butler & Ed Horrocks 51pts
2nd John O’Keefe & On Lloyd 49pts
3rd Gerry Power & Terry Phur 48pts
4th David Dunstan & Robert Barnes
48pts

Roaring 40’s abound this week
Travellers Rest Golf Group
Ian Smith winner at Crystal
Bay.
Andy Rich
What a remarkable week’s golf the TRGG has just
experienced. It started off on Monday 2nd July in quite unremarkable fashion
at Emerald, a favourite course for a number of members. The higher
handicappers always seem to do well here and Monday was no exception with
Willem Hagting playing off twenty seven winning with 42 points and Seamus
Farrell (29) coming second on count back from Ted Senior (13) in third, with
35 points.
Tuesday 3rd July saw the first strange turn of events
when the group took on Khao Kheow (B and C courses). The higher handicap
golfers don’t tend to do so well here and spend a good deal of their time
trying to fish their balls out of the water on this course as it is a true
test of course management.
Noel Pittard.
So two groups of four set off and quite unbelievably all
four players in the first group shot 32 points and it at first appeared that
after count back calculations the winner would be one of the four as this
was the best score out of the whole group. However one player in the second
group Ito Akitoshi, playing off a declared handicap of eight, shot 31
points. On returning to base and inputting all the scores on the computer it
was discovered that Ito had in fact dropped to a nine handicap and because
of a superior back nine holes to anybody in the first group jumped from
fifth to first.
So just to clarify the results were as follows: Ito
Akitoshi (9) 32 points in first place, Gerry Swan (14) 32 points in second
and Neil Bramley (7) 32 points in third.
Thursday 5th July saw TRGG make its weekly pilgrimage to
Phoenix where we took on the Mountain and Ocean courses. Ito Akitoshi
obviously didn’t like playing off his new nine handicap and proceeded to
blast the course apart and returned with 41 points so ensuring that he is
now back to eight. Ito took first place from Mod Chaviraksa (13) on 37
points and Jim Cleaver (13) in third on 35.
On Saturday 7th July we made our usual visit to Crystal
Bay to play (A and B) courses. I don’t know whether the course that we
played the previous Saturday had got easier or whether everybody had been
taking their “make golf easy” pills but there were some truly remarkable
scores returned.
Ian Smith, playing of twelve, won with 42 points from Jim
Cleaver (13) and David Booth (14) who both shot 41 points. Special mention
must also go to Bob Watson who now plays off minus one and returned with 39
points which included three ‘2’s in that score and Noel Pittard (6) 38
points. Noel also won the prize for the most colourful outfit on the course
that day. In fact I think it was the most colourful in Thailand on the day.
Even yours truly played like ten men on the day, unfortunately nine were
dead and the other one was dying.

O’Donnell takes one
for the old stagers
PSC golf from the Café Kronborg
Monday, July 2, Bangpra -
Stableford
Bangpra was the venue on Monday for our stableford game.
We had an on-time departure and a 45 minute transit to the course. After
check-in and heading for the first tee it was discovered many golfers were
waiting on the first tee, but we finally managed to tee off on time.
When we had played a few holes it was evident that most
white teeing grounds were closed and the markers moved to the blues making
an estimated length of the course after finishing of about 6800 yards. The
course was in its usual fine condition with the resident monkeys patrolling
around the sixth and seventh fairways.
Back in the clubhouse after a round of 4 hours and 30
minutes we welcomed Pattaya resident and Dane Benny Hansen.
The oldest man in the field 82 year old world traveller
Hugh O’Donnell, who hits the ball 250 yards, was the winner with a fine 35
points. Mashi Kaneta took second on a count back from Mike Winfield third,
both on 32 points, with Dave Richaedson in fourth on 27.
1st Hugh O’Donnell (26) 35pts
2nd Mashi Kaneta (11) 32pts
3rd Mike Winfield (23) 32points
4th Dave Richardson (27) 27pts
Thursday, July 5, Treasure Hill – Stableford
The Treasure Hill Golf and Country Club was the host for
a stableford event on Thursday. Departing on time and up the 331 we arrived
55 minutes later for a swift check-in and a tee off 23 minutes early for the
first group.
The course was in fine condition and should remain so for
the members open on the 20th of July. The weather was fine but a bit
overcast with a brief shower just past the turn but it did not hold up play.
The first group finished in 4 hours and 20 minutes.
Back in the clubhouse we welcomed Pattaya resident Marty
Allred, Gerard Wallis from Bangladesh via Aussie, Prem Chard from Dubai via
Aussie, Brian Satterup from Greenland and the trio of Peter Fagerlund,
Christer Hedberg and Per Svenson all hailing from Sweden.
We had 2 flights today with the cut at handicap 17 and
Prem Chard took the A Flight with 37 points. Marty Allred came in second on
a count back from Per Svensen third, both with 32 points.
Dave Richardson was first in the B Flight with 32 points,
Peter Fagerlund second on 31 points and Jean Morel third with 28.
A Flight (0-17)
1st Prem Chard (13) 37pts
2nd Marty Allred (1) 32pts
3rd Per Svensen (15) 32pts
B Flight (18+)
1st Dave Richardson (27) 32pts
2nd Peter Fagerlund (22) 31pts
3rd Jean Morel (19) 28pts

Graham jumps to early lead
PSC Bunker Boys @ The Bowling Green
Monday, July 2,
Pattana – Stableford
Just nine golfers today, but the three groups of
3-balls were able to set off with a clear course ahead of them. After a
short discussion on the first tee we decided to play off the yellow tees
rather than the whites, since some holes, particularly on the B nine,
offer a daunting challenge to the shorter hitters.
Gerry Cooney is beginning
to claw his way up the leaderboard after returning from long term
injury.
The course was in good condition, but the speed of
the greens was variable with the A course greens being generally slow
and the B course ones considerably faster.
Lee Butler returned to form to record the best score
of the day, and picked up three near pin prizes on the way. Lee’s friend
and arch-rival Barry Murnin was in second place, after reportedly
spending the whole weekend at the driving range.
1st Lee Butler (14) 38pts
2nd Barry Murnin (15) 36pts
3rd John Graham (10) 35pts
Near Pins: John Graham and Lee Butler(3)
Wednesday, July 4, Khao Kheow B & C – Stableford
Eleven golfers today, and once again we were
presented with a wide open course, and the leading three-ball completed
the round in under 3ฝ hours. The course was in good condition, the
greens having largely recovered from recent damage, and they were
playing fast and tricky.
Eddie Kelly continued his recent run of good form
(two out of the last three rounds under his handicap) to take the
honours – and is surely heading for a cut! We welcomed back Richard
Baldotto for his annual visit, but he’s going to need a few more games
to get into the swing of things, completing his first round with the not
so impressive total of 23 points.
Lee Butler was heard to complain that his
disappointing round was caused by a dog which followed him round the
course, and was standing next to him on every shot, panting heavily – it
wasn’t until the 16th hole that he found out the
dog belonged to the caddy!
1st Eddie Kelly (17) 37pts
2nd Paul Edgar (19) 33pts
3rd John Graham (10) 31pts
Near Pins: John Graham (2)
Friday, July 6, Greenwood B & C – Stableford
So much for my comment about Richard on Wednesday –
he emphatically proved me wrong by scoring 39 points (a massive
improvement of 16 points over Wednesday’s total), only narrowly losing
out on first place to John Graham on the count back. John’s had three
podium finishes this week, to establish an early lead in the race to
Golfer of the Month, and is playing consistently well.
Both your scribe and his stand-in correspondent are
enjoying a drunken weekend in Phnom Penh, so nothing to report from the
course today.
1st John Graham (10) 39pts
2nd Richard Baldotto (25) 39pts
3rd Paul Edgar (19) 38pts
Near Pins: Paul Edgar, Dave Ashman.
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf
society who now play out of the Bowling Green on Soi X-Zyte between
Pattaya 3rd Road and Soi Buakhaow. We play three
times per week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, so if you enjoy a
fun day out, and a friendly but competitive golf competition why not
come and join us.
We meet at the Bowling Green at 9 a.m. for breakfast
and transportation, and new players with valid handicaps are always
welcome. For more information call Dave on 087 1469978, email dave.

Rodney Hayes back on top
IPGC golf from The Haven
Monday, July 2, The
Emerald - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Rodney Hayes (14) 34pts
2nd Yasuo Suzuki (12) 34pts
3rd Terry Hodgkiss (22) 31pts
4th Al Keith (5) 29pts
5th Tom McCarthy (20) 28pts
The Emerald is now a fixture as one of the courses that
the group will play regularly as they all offer good quality golf at
reasonable prices and they join Phoenix, Bangpra, Khao Kheow, Pattana in the
favoured group playing twice a month, with other courses Eastern Star,
Crystal Bay, Mountain Shadow, Treasure Hill, Greenwood, being played once a
month.
Rodney Hayes.
The condition of the course was found to be better
generally following the recent work on the greens and the fairways also
showing signs of improvement although the scores did not reflect that.
Following the recent rains there was very little run on
the fairways to help, leaving many holes out of reach with the shorter
irons.
Rodney Hayes fared the best on the day and after starting
out very quietly he lit up the back nine following a minor glitch on the
tenth where he strangely hit his tee shot out of sight, never to be seen
again, to stand at 15 points after 10 holes. He then took 19 points from the
next eight which was easily enough to ensure a win in the count back over
Yasuo Suzuki. Yasuo had started steadily but could not increase the scoring
rate and finished with a scratch on the last which sealed the day in
Rodney’s favour.
Terry Hodgkiss, now playing from his lowest ever handicap
following a very good run of form that has seen it drop four shots in a
couple of weeks, did not set the course alight but did well enough against
the rest of the field to claim third place ahead of Al Keith, who could not
quite get to grips with the course all day.
Tom McCarthy did well enough to finish ahead of many
others although he was not writing home immediately about his score when a
poor start left him with little chance of a good result having just eleven
points after ten holes.
There were no 2’s in the second division but Rodney Hayes
scored the lone one in the first division to sweep the pool and add to his
day’s haul.
Before presenting the prizes Stephen Beard welcomed back
Brian Kelly and also had a farewell for Yasuo Suzuki returning to Japan for
a well earned rest after the strains of his latest tour leadership event.
With the IPGC monthly tournament teeing off on Wednesday
and The Baan Jing Jai Summer scramble on Friday this was the only event of
the week.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven group,
you can contact mobile 082 219 0965 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185
Soi 13, between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All
transportation to the course is arranged and you do not need to sign up
prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.30 on Monday, Wednesday, and
Friday on the days you wish to play. A schedule of courses to be played can
be found on our web site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Phillips lights up Emerald
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Monday, July 2,
The Emerald – Stableford
The back nine greens at Emerald are due to be updated so
probably a two-week break before we return here again. The course was in
good condition and there were no complaints about the greens today.
Rod Howett and Lindsay
Phillips - winners at Emerald on Monday.
The cut was 7-18 and 21+ in division 2 and there were
some great scores coming in and with 41 points Lindsay Phillips won division
1 after beating Ted Morris, now playing off 15, by one point. Chris Voller
meanwhile, despite an amazing 38 points, had to settle for third place.
Rod Howett, in form lately, took the top podium position
in division 2 with 38 points while his buddy boy Mark Armstrong claimed
second one point behind and ‘Count back’ Burnie was third with 34.
An interesting day today in the ‘2’s with four rollovers in two
divisions. At the presentation back at Siam Cats later there was humorous
uproar as the first group out today all recorded a ‘2’ in the second
division, so well done Mark Armstrong, Roar Berger and Rod Howett. In
division 1 a slightly bigger pot was shared between Ted Morris and Chris
Voller.

Baccioli gets his groove back
Phoenix Tuesday/Friday (Men Only) Golf Group
Mike Gerrard
Phoenix golf courses now are at the best they have been
for a couple of years. We played on Mountain/Ocean course today, July 3, and
apart from a few other groups we had the course to ourselves. In comparison
to years past if tourism is up in Pattaya then it ain’t golfers who are
coming.
Tuesday’s winners with the
staff at The Relax Bar.
After two years of suffering from broken wrists, Giorgio
Baccioli found his old (and now new) form to win the day with a fine 36
points. Sure, he had gone up a couple of shots whilst he nursed his wrists
back to health, but he is hitting the ball straighter than ever (not long)
but true.
In second place was Richard Baldwin with 33 points and in
third place was the never out of the frame Stuart Gordon with 32 points.
There were no near pin prizes today so it was straight
onto the lucky draw (donated by our hosts The Relax Bar). The free massage
went to yours truly, the free drink went to John Bartley and the last prize
went to Patrick Browne.
A few amber nectars later all the bad shots of the day
were forgotten and we all went home well pleased with another day in
paradise.
We play every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. If anyone would
like to join the group please contact me on 087 091 7565. We also organise
fortnightly sea fishing trips.

Chris and Robbie
take the Medals
IPGC July Monthly Medals
Wednesday, July 4 –
Phoenix G.C.
CSS 72
Division 1 (0–12)
Stroke Play
1st Chris Voller (8) net 72
2nd Anders Hansson (9) net 72
3rd Yasuo Suzuki (12) net 73
4th Jon Batty (8) net 74
5th Al Keith (5) net 74
Division 2 (13+)
Stableford
1st Robbie Taylor (13) 44pts
2nd Bruce Gardner (22) 41pts
3rd Benny Hansen (25) 40pts
4th Josef Frick (23) 39pts
5th Shuichi Kodaka (17) 37pts
6th Joe Niisato (13) 37pts
2’s: Anders Hansson, Robbie Taylor, Bruce Gardner,
Jon Batty
With many of the competitors signed up for the Baan Jing
Jai Summer Scramble to be held over the same courses on the following
Friday, it was a better than expected turnout as players hoped to get a bit
of course knowledge from an extra round.
The conditions were ideal for golf with an overcast sky
that threatened rain but stayed dry throughout the day and a slight wind
from the west helping to cool the worst of the humidity. Play set off at a
brisk pace without the usual IPGC starter but the usual Phoenix man did his
customary good job and the play over the Mountain and Ocean Courses was at a
very good pace, with the last group taking just over four hours to complete
the eighteen.
The first division was led in by Chris Voller, who had to
win a count back over Anders Hansson to claim his first IPGC medal, which he
did with a better net 34 against 36.5 after covering the inward half on two
over gross even with an ugly double bogey on the par 3 Ocean 7. He had done
enough however as Anders slipped slightly, also taking a double on the
seventeenth hole when a bogey would have won the day.
Yasuo Suzuki, who was preparing to return to Japan for a
couple of months may well have been thinking of that when playing the first
as he completely lost the plot, taking a quintuple bogey and was pleased to
see the last of the hole with a nine. Not a very auspicious start to a medal
round, but with typical stoical application he played the next seventeen at
four under handicap to finish in third place.
The second division was a scoring festival with the top
six players all bettering their handicaps with the Medal winner Robbie
Taylor having his best round in Thailand, in fact only ever playing under 85
gross on a couple of occasions very recently. But on this day a gross 77
proved to be the winning number although the margin of victory was not as
great as he may have expected when he signed the card having played the back
nine at one under gross.
Bruce Gardner, no doubt having thought he may have well
been the winner, had to settle for second place at five under handicap after
he had also finished very strongly with a five under handicap closing nine
which included a scratch hole in the middle and a one pointer on the last
but he had also three four pointers and two three pointers.
Benny Hansen took third place after he had had equaled
his lifetime best score but sadly finished with a no score hole which cost
him second spot.
Josef Frick was almost in contention but a miscalculation
in the points score lowered him into fourth place ahead of a count back for
fifth which Shuichi Kodak won with a better 21 to 17 over Joe Niisato.
After the golf the players returned to The Haven, which
was the month’s venue for the prize giving, where they were provide with a
superb buffet prior to the prize presentations which were made by Emcee
Stephen Beard and presented by Russell Exley as the organiser of the day.
Following the presentations Russell Oversaw the now
standard luck draw when everyone attending won a prize.

Herbie strikes back
PSC golf from the Blue Moose Sports Bar
Monday, July 2, Pattaya
C.C. - Stableford
Eight of the finest showed up early to tee it up at
Pattaya Country Club. The usual 4-some of Billy, Joe, Jan & Oiy drafted Dale
M. to replace Oiy because of illness.
Dale Murphy, left and Herbie
Ishinaga.
The weather was good; however, the greens were very slow.
Joe S. had a 6 foot putt for birdie that ended up as a bogey!
After winning the monthly at Burapha, Billy T. realized
that you cannot continue that level of golf after a month layoff. Herbie
meanwhile is getting back into the swing of things with a 40 point effort.
He is also predicting domination of the Monday golf. Bobby C. and Paul K.
were missing due to (alcohol related?) injuries.
Following Herbie on the podium was Dale M. with a fine 39
point performance. Jan thought she might be competing for the top spot until
she found out her handicap was 2 strokes lower at 24, resulting in 35
stableford points. Larry E. claimed some Tiger Woods driving distances
without any verification.
Bill Thompson, left and Larry
Emerson.
All stopped at Caddy Shack 2 before moving on to Jan’s
for some Thai food.
Photo: Dale Murphy, left and Herbie, right
Thursday, July 5, Phoenix - Stableford
This week the Blue Moose gang travelled to Phoenix Golf
Club to play the Mountain and Ocean nines. The weather was very humid
without any wind.
Bill Thompson beat out Larry Emerson on count back with
37 points. Bruce Funk came in third with 32 points. The gap between Billy
and other normal contenders could have been because of the excellent 4th
of July party Billy put on the day before at the Blue Moose. The consumption
at the open bar was high.
Our low handicap golfer Mark Campbell struggled with
tight shoulders due to excessive conditioning, although he did capture
closest to the pin.
The returning golfers were treated to hot dogs, potato
salad and other complementaries at the Blue Moose.
Note: Golf outings will change from Thursdays to
Wednesdays. Check the web site at http://www.blue moosepattaya.com/ for the
upcoming schedule. Monday golf will stay the same at Pattaya Country Club.

Salvatore the Ace in the pack
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society
Sunday, July 1, Green
Valley - Stableford
A Flight
1st Ed Wyckoff (9) 38pts
2nd Tom Byrne (14) 37pts
B Flight
1st Adam Oyston (17) 39pts
2nd Morten Esseth (17) 36pts
Near Pins: No 4 Paul Heyworth, No 9 Derek Phillips,
No 12 Paul Heyworth, No 16 Paul Heyworth
Big hitting Adam Oyston, every body’s nice guy, dazzled
the field with a B Flight and match winning 39 points. The only guy close to
him in his flight was Tom ‘the Irish Rover’ Byrne just one stroke in
arrears.
Colin Davis, left, with
Salvatore Brizzi.
Ed ‘our man in the White house’ Wyckoff, who played
through jet lag on his return from holiday, topped the accomplished lot with
a solid 38 point return followed by Esseth Morten who was three shots in
arrears. ‘The Donkey’ must have got his maths wrong as he slipped off the
podium steps carding an even par round.
London’s Paul Heyworth’s short iron play showed why he
plays off a stingy 6 handicap as he picked up three near pins; pity his
putter was not so hot as he failed to convert any of them.
Eddy Beilby and John Newsome had no such problem as they
knocked in their chance to split the 2’s pot
Monday, July 2, Green Valley - Stableford
A Flight
1st Colin Davis (15) 40pts
2nd Salvatore Brizzi (7) 39pts
3rd Phil page (12) 36pts
B Flight
1st Jim Elphick (24)35pts
2nd Henry Obrien (15) 34pts
3rd Mick Folan (16) 34pts
Monday was the first day of the Lewiinski’s Golf Club
Monthly challenge and the weather was hot and humid, as one would expect for
this time of the year.
‘The Donkey’ led the herd in with a splendid top score of
the day 40 points. His score included two sandy par saves and a sand trap
chip in - must be his youth spent working Blackpool beach on a holiday
fortnight. ‘The Donkey’ was one clear of Savatore Brizzi, another
Lewiinski’s regular, and four clear of Phil Page.
Lewiinski’s very own Jimmy ‘two shots’ Elphick took top
spot in B Flight on 35 points while Henry O’Brien and Mick Folan filled the
minor places in that order as both posted34 points.
For a more in-depth article on the day’s proceedings
please visit The Golf Club’s report found in these sports pages.
Wednesday, July 4, Burapha - Stableford
A Flight
1st Phil Page (13) 38pts
2nd Paul Hack (12) 38pts
B Flight
1st Ivan Plunkett (20) 35pts
2nd Jim Elphick (24) 34pts
The low handicappers showed their mettle on the tough B &
D nines at Burapha as the only players to better their handicaps came from A
Flight. The hard luck story was Paul Hack who always plays the course
extremely well and carded a fine 38 points but lost on count back to Phil
Page. The count back had to go to the second level of the last six holes
after the two players had identical back nine scoring.
B Flight was a bit less dramatic but the loot was just as
spendable; just ask Ivan Plunkett who copped the top rung with a steady 35
points. Jimmy ‘2 shots’ Elphick kept Ivan company on the podium, gaining a
count back decision over Rod Brown
‘The Donkey’ (a pair), Salvatore Brizzi and Phil Page
shared the 2’s pot.
Friday, July 6, Pattana - Stableford
A Flight
1st Salvatore Brizzi (7) 43pts
2nd Phil Page (12) 41pts
B Flight
1st Ian Wilson (20) 39pts
2nd Mike Jeffreys (18) 36pts
The second day of the Lewiinski’s Golf Club Monthly
challenge and you couldn’t get a bet on the red hot favorite Colin ‘the
Donkey’ Davis, who has been in great form of late, amassing 14 points on the
first four holes at Burapha on Wednesday and led the first day with 40
points. But that is where it all stopped as the wheels came off big time as
‘the Donkey’ ran out of his favorite carrots.
Following ‘the Donkey’ on day one with 39 points was
Melbourne’s favorite son and Lewinski regular star Salvatore Brizzi, who
shot an amazing 43 points to clinch the lead crystal goblet and man of the
match. Phil Page was second in A Flight with a rock solid 41 points.
Ian Wilson was the top performer in B Flight with a solid
39 points. Ian was followed up the podium steps by Mike the ‘Welsh wizard’
Jeffreys as his par round had the better back side than the unlucky Nick
Odnoral.
To make this a day to remember, Salvatore knocked in the
only 2 of the day.
A great day enjoyed by all ending with the Lewiinski’s
famous buffet thanks to all the staff for their hard work.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi 1, Beach Road Soi
13/3 near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in and
add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport is
provided.

Good golf at bargain basement
PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside
Tuesday, July 3, we were down to play Phoenix, but with a
shortage of numbers we decided on a change of venue and off we went to
Century Chonburi. With so many of our regulars away or busy we opted for no
formal comp today, with Clive and Jeff playing the best.
Clive Hoseason.
Thursday, July 5, was a scheduled trip to Rayong Country
Club, again a good value venue and if you can keep the ball on or about the
fairway, you will have a decent day; but stray too far and it will end in
tears.
Jon Pratt (17) led the way on the first 9 with 17 points
and looked set for a good day, however those couple of not so good shots
were punished and he came home with 13 points. This left the way open for
the returning Jeff Wylie (4) after a first 9 of 15, to sign for 31 points,
enough to win the day.
Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf generally on
Tuesday & Thursday, with ML hosting prompt presentations on both days. Call
089 094 1841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers &
good golfing!

Max tops the podium at Mountain Shadow
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
Friday’s top three.
Derek Brook
Tuesday, July 3, Khao Kheow – Stableford
It was going to rain, the sky was dark as I went down to
Bert’s and it was only a matter of time. So we all had a cup of coffee and
jumped in cars and wended our way down to Khao Kheow, and all the time the
rain spots were seen on the windscreen, mind quite light.
A quick book-in saw us all at the first tee, and we
started the test for the day which was to be the C & A Nines. Of course the
caddies all elected to start with the rain covers on the bags and we got
away under rainy skies and a mild drizzle.
The course was really quite empty, so we were able to get
off and move at a fair pace. Kkao Kheow was in its normal good condition and
with all the rain about we were still allowed to use the fairways for
buggies but had to be careful as it was a bit wet in some places. However,
the fairways were generally quite dry, the rough tricky and the greens fast
and true - all in all a fair test.
Talking of the rain, the drizzle got quite heavy for a
while, then it cleared so the caddies took the covers off the top of the
bags, then of course it rained again, but only for a short time, then it
cleared again. It went on like that for the afternoon. The temperature
varied from hot and humid, to a bit cool.
Soon around, it was time for a nice cool shower, then
into the restaurant where we could watch the rest of the groups finish their
round. Surprisingly the heavens had not opened but it was still very dull
and threatening. Then it was time to climb back into the cars and nip back
down Route 7 to Tropical Bert’s. We were back quite early and so could relax
with a cold one until the clans gathered.
When it came time for the results, it was seen that it
was Khao Kheow 23, Tropical Bert’s 0 with one drawn. In the A Flight, 0 to
18, the winner was Mike O’Brien with 36 points ahead of Mashi Kaneta with 34
points on count back over Alan Sullivan in third.
In the B Flight the winner was Henry Wong with 33 points
on count back over Dick Warberg in second. We had a three-way count back for
third on 32 points that saw Steve Compton in third with Neil Shaw and Tom
Cotton just losing out.
Then it poured down, and became really dark, and it just
did not stop raining for hours and hours. So the wife drove around and
picked me up, good job because with it raining for so long we had nowhere to
go and nothing to do but enjoy Tropical Bert’s happy hour!

Friday, July 6,
Mountain Shadow – Stableford
This is a course that mere mortals find very difficult,
especially playing off the blue tees. On this day we had a good turnout and
with the Aussie contingent turning up with their own mini bus we were soon
on our way down there.
The Aussie contingent are at the moment very strong, with
three very low handicappers, however it is a pleasure to play with them, to
at least see how the game should be played. However once in a while one of
our other good golfers plays well and is dragged upwards. You need to play
with better golfers to improve, or so I have been told. Probably by a better
golfer as he crushed me.
At the course it was soon book in and onto the first tee.
We played the good golfers in the last group so they could pick up the near
pins as they put their names on them. So on the tee and off we went into a
strong wind. First ball I hit went into a tree on the left and was not
found, so my day was set as the drives on the next two holes finished right
behind a tree. Still some must be playing well, but not in my four-ball.
The course was not in bad condition, but the fairways
were a little hard and the greens also were hard and tricky. With the wind
blowing, a lot of time was spent in the trees and I thought that as is
usual, the scores would be worse than normal.
Soon in, I have to report that for some reasons the
towels were a bit fluffier, whether the ones they had for the last ten years
have given up the ghost we shall find out on the next visit, however it was
a nice surprise. The showers themselves were under renovation, and hot water
was hard to find but you cannot be lucky in all areas. We shall see the
showers when we go back. So into the little room they keep with air
conditioning, and very good as we were all perspiring a lot. The food was
not bad and the price reasonable.
So back to Bert’s where with all soon back, we were able
to get on with the presentation. With only one flight we were able to see
how the better golfers were able to handle a course such as this, so much
better.
The winner with 38 points (Hcp 5 and gross 74) was Max
Scott, with a count back on 37 points that saw Alan Sullivan in second (Hcp
12 and gross 83) with Bob Watson in third (Hcp 3 and gross 74). In fourth
was David Hutchison with 36 points (Hcp 0 and gross 72), then we returned to
reality with Graham Buckingham in fifth with 33 points and a gross that we
do not mention. So high class for some and a struggle for the rest.
It was then time for a few cold un’s while some decided
to go to the driving range in the morning. T.T.F.N.
Near Pins: Max Scott (2), Graham Buckingham, Brian
Parish

Bangpra suits the Boss
The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC) at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
July with the Pattaya Golf Society started with a visit
to Bangpra on Monday, 2nd, to play a stableford event on the immaculate
course with greens running at their best. Such is the attraction of Bangpra
that four Pattaya groups were enjoying the day there but all ran smoothly.
Going off on time the PGS made the best of it with many white tees well back
because of tee maintenance.
Except for one golfer the group found scoring quite tough
and thirty points was enough for a share of second place for Seil Revels,
Jean Morel and Joe Niisato but it was to be a “good day at the office” for
the organiser, Mr Len, who finished with 35 points, despite wiping the final
two holes after an interminable delay on the seventeenth tee saw his energy
and rhythm dissipate.
There were no birdie ‘2’s and the Booby Bevy went to Dave
Edwards for finally joining the “hero to zero” club after his excellent golf
during the previous two weeks saw him post the day’s lowest score. Rabbi’s
free beer draw was won by Tim Lazecki, at last pursuing his favourite sport
again after a long layoff with injury. Indeed, an excellent start to the
month!

PSC Softball makes triumphant return to Thai Polo Club
Winners of the softball
tournament (left to right): George, Shawn, John S, Adam, Ben, Jerry, Rodney,
Greg and Vince.
Diego Wells
What an action packed day you missed if you weren’t one
of the 30 players who returned to the Thai Polo Club’s sweet softball field
this past Sunday, July 8. That’s right, the Pattaya Sports Club Softball
league returned to the best diamond in the country to enjoy 5 action packed
games of hard-nosed (I am an authority on that particular subject) Softball!
Adam displays perfect
technique as he follows through completely and hits his record setting 5th
homerun of the day.
Highlights included Mike Berg, our Bangkok Softball
connection bringing along a professional baseball player, Adam, who brought
the game to a higher level. Adam struck out his first 4 times at bat, unable
to adequately adjust to the high lob pitch style of the softball game. He
stayed positive, and then, voila, he hit 5 consecutive homeruns to shatter
the one day hitting record, and was named most valuable player in the
tournament. His Rob Deer like style of hitting was impressive, as you don’t
come to softball or Pattaya for that matter, just to walk!
In 3 team tournament action, there were some great games.
Rick Smith’s team finished in the number 1 seed, beating John Stockton’s
team 12-8 and then destroying Diego’s team 8-1. After their first game
setback, Stockton’s team put it all together by beating Diego’s team 7-6 and
reversing their fortune against the undefeated Smith team in the final
match.
With homerun blasts from Tyler Best & Brian Gavagan for
Rick’s team, countered with dingers from Rodney and 2 from Adam the game
really was a hitters’ duel. In the end, John Stockton’s team was able to
come out on top winning by a score of 15-9 and earning the title of
champions for the day.
Another great Sunday of Pattaya Sports Club Softball saw
the boys play a 5th and relatively meaningless game with anyone who had any
energy left. It turned into good fun and was an excellent way to tighten up
our softball skills. We are still looking for another 8 to 10 good hearted
lads to come out every Sunday from noon to 4pm, and enjoy this great sport
with us. If interested send me an email (Diego) at igolfwells @gmail.com or
to our lead organizer John Stockton at [email protected] or look us up
on the Pattaya Sports Club website. Hope to see you all out at the diamond
soon!
Mike Berg rockets one to
leftfield, as pitcher John Stockton, SS Adam and 3B Ben eagerly await its
landing.
Vince Chang stretches out at
1st to help Sunrise Taco get the final out against Soi Dogs in game 1.

A home success on two fronts
Baan Jin Jai Summer Scramble 2012
The second Baan Jing Jai Summer Scramble event in aid of
the New Home Building Fund was played over the Mountain and Ocean Course at
Phoenix Golf and Country Club on Friday, July 6, after the management had
offered to assist the cause, and with the weather holding off having
threatened to rain for most of the day, it was a fine day to play golf with
the added knowledge that it was all in a good cause.
Stephen Beard, left, and
Barry Winton, right, from the winning team, pose with their trophies.
The competition got away exactly on time and the rounds
proceeded at a brisk pace, considering the four person scramble format, with
the last teams round being completed in less than four and a half hours.
As the day progressed the skies remained overcast with a
slight wind ensuring everyone had a great day’s golf whether they were among
the prize winners or not.
With a maximum of five tee shots for each team member the
system allowed all levels to compete in what is designed primarily to be a
fun tournament which everyone can join and enjoy with the real winners being
the charity.
The standard of scoring was again exceptionally high with
all the teams finishing within five shots of each other and indeed the top
nine teams covered but just three shots with the top three teams all
shooting a gross 66 and the winners, second place and third being determined
by the handicaps received. The winning score was just 0.1 higher than that
of last year’s event.
Whilst golf was the main attraction of the earlier part
of the day, the concept was to use the tournament to focus on the raising of
funds for the children of the Bann Jing Jai Orphanage which has some 80
children under its care and exists solely on the good will and donations of
private individuals and charitable donations from organizations throughout
the year. This event was organized to raise funds to go towards the
construction of a new home, for approximately 100 children, to be built on
over four rai of land on the outskirts of Pattaya, the land already having
been purchased for that purpose.
Runner-up team, Lars Nedrelid,
Anders Hansson, Tom Novak and Colin James.
More information can be found on the website www.
baanjingjaifoundation.org.
Whilst there was not a hard and fast target for the day
it had been hoped, having regard that the event was to be held in the middle
of the low season, that somewhere around a hundred thousand baht could be
raised. In the event this figure was exceeded.
Prior to the presentations there were special thanks to
some of those who had assisted in setting up and organizing the day and or
sold tickets for the lucky draw. These included Len Jones and Russell Exley
on the golfing side and Jim Farmer and Jeff Stone who between them sold a
large number of tickets for the prize draw, together with collecting many
donations and to all those who donated in any way whatsoever to the cause.
Following the draw for the 50/50 prizes the final total
for the day was revealed as THB 105,000.
The total raised for the Baan Jing Jai New Home Appeal
was made up as follows: Golfing activities of the day 22,000 baht; 50/50
Draw 42,000 baht; Donations 31,000 baht; Special Donation 10,000 baht.
Third placed team Grant
Cadell, Noi Emerson and Tony Barritt (Al Keith not in picture).
Whilst not wishing to exclude and also not mentioning any
individual, many who gave very generously either through the 50/50 draw or
directly into the fund with donation, it is right to give credit to those
commercial sponsors who helped to make this such a successful day; these
were Phoenix Golf and Country Club, The Pattaya Mail, The Links Golf
Bar, The Pattaya Sports Supply and The Haven Hotel.

Camel charity golf tourney raises
record amount for Camillian Center
Members of the organising
committee for the Camel Summer Charity Classic of 2012 present a cheque for
THB 800,170 to the children and coordinators of the Camillian Social Center
in Rayong.
Saturday 23 June, one week after their most successful
charity golf tournament to date, the organising committee for the Camel
Summer Charity Classic of 2012 travelled the short distance from Banchang to
the Camillian Social Center in Rayong to present the Camillians with the
final amount raised from the tournament, an amazing THB 800,170.
This amount raised was made possible through the
participation of almost 200 golfers, the support of the Emerald Golf Course
and the generosity of so many willing sponsors, companies and individuals,
some who have been supporting the tournament through the years and as
always, some new sponsors.
The Camel Classic Organising Committee wish to express
their sincere gratitude to all who made this a truly memorable tournament
and result.

Nilwong rescues a point
for 10-man United
Sompob Nilwong celebrates
scoring United’s equalizer against Police FC at the Nongprue Stadium in
Pattaya, Saturday, July 7. (Photo/Pattaya United)
Pattaya United returned to Thai Premier League action
last weekend with a home match against Insee Police United at a rain swept
Nongprue stadium in Pattaya.
The Dolphins got off to the worst possible start however
as they conceded a goal to the visitors in just the 12th
minute of the game. The United defence gifted far too much time on the ball
to Police midfielder Assaming Mae and he made them pay by drilling a low
shot from the edge of the area that found its way into the back of the net
under the dive of goalkeeper Narit.
Things looked even bleaker for the home team when Seeket
Madputeh was sent off in the 76th minute for an
alleged punch on Leandro Dos Santos, but the 10 men of Pattaya rallied and
rescued a valuable point when defender Sompob Nilwong rose at a corner kick
to head past the Police goalkeeper with just 7 minutes left in the match.
The point sees United remain in the top half of the table
but with a host of teams breathing down their neck and ready to pounce if
United slip up. The Dolphins next two matches are away from home with a trip
to Chiangrai United on July 18, followed by a game against TTM Chiangmai on
July 22.

Stuvik puts on
strong showing
at Oschersleben Circuit
Sandy Stuvik poses next to
his Formula Renault racecar at the Oschersleben Circuit in Germany.
Sandy Stuvik maintained his improved form by constantly
running in the top ten for the early practice sessions at Germany’s
Oschersleben Circuit last weekend. Leading up to the third round of the 2012
Formula Renault 2.0 series championship, the Thai racer was sixth fastest in
the first free practice and ninth fastest in the second out of the 28 cars
on the grid.
Then on Friday afternoon’s first qualifying run he
secured a strong seventh starting position and an 8eigth place for the
second race. The starting position for the third was determined by the
finishing position in the first race.
Saturday morning however brought a heavy rain just before
the start of the Formula Renault first race, but Sandy got off to a good
start and maintained his position in the field until mid-race, when pushing
for an overtaking maneuver he went too fast into turn 1 and instead lost a
position. He still kept pushing, setting faster times, and in the end took a
rain drenched checkered flag in 8th place.
The second race for the weekend started in sunny
conditions and a dry circuit, but dark rain clouds were circling the track.
The 28 cars on the Formula Renault 2.0 grid got off incident free and Sandy
made a very good start, making up 2 positions in the first corner, which
moved him up to 6th. On the second lap he challenged for fifth, but had to
settle back into sixth place.
Sandy continued to push hard in the first half of the
race, knowing his car was set up for the initial launch. By mid race, the
tire temperatures started going too high and he had to slow down a little to
save on his tires. In the process he got into a huge fight for position with
Jeroen Slaghekke and in the end lost a position to the Dutch driver. Still
Sandy maintained his position and eventually finished the race in a season
best 7th position.
17 year old Stuvik continued showing his strong form with
a 6th place finish in the Oschersleben’s third race on Sunday morning.
Starting from 8th place on the grid the Thai driver was again off to a good
start with an early aggressive strategy. By lap 2 he was up to 6th place and
started pulling away from the cars behind.
By mid race he started catching back up to the fourth and
fifth placed cars and mounted a strong challenge over the last 5 laps,
reeling the front cars back in, and in the end took the checkered flag a
mere 0,5 second behind the 5th placed car.
Team Interwetten.com Junior Team manager Michael
Schneider was content with the season best sixth place finish for the young
Thai racer, although he felt Sandy would have it in him to aim for top 5
finishes now. Sandy Stuvik now ranks 8th in the 2012 Formula Renault
Northern European Championship with 74 points.
The next race in the series is at Assen, Netherlands on
the weekend August 2-5.

The 2012 King’s Cup Pattaya Marathon will once again
attract thousands of runners, both young and old, and all shapes and sizes,
to hit the city streets early Sunday morning, July 15; some with dreams of
glory and many others just hoping to make the finish line.
The annual road racing festival, which is now becoming a

Central Festival Beach shopping mall on Beach Road where they will await the
starter’s gun to set them on their way.
The races, offering up to 2 million baht in prize money,
have once again been divided into several categories and race distances, all
with separate start times. The wheelchair competitors will be the first to

and the student fun run (3.500km) at 5.45 a.m.
The marathon route will take the runners from the start
point on Beach Road out on Sukhumvit Road heading towards Sattahip as far as
the Wat Khao Cheejan turn-off and then back to Pattaya via Jomtien and Khao
Phratamnak.
The half and quarter marathons will follow a similar
route except that runners will turn for home at Soi Wat Boon and the
Underwater World respectively before heading back via Jomtien Beach and
South Pattaya.
As always, the marathon will be accompanied by the usual
forms of periphery entertainment including live music, dancing and market
stalls along Beach Road throughout the weekend.
