Reynisson overpowers Khao Kheow to win by one over Laurie

Pattaya Sports Club Golf Championship

Johann Reynisson snatched the Pattaya Sports Club Golf Championship from Alan Laurie with a 9 under par effort over two days at Khao Kheow. The Swedish nine handicapper captured the overall championship, the Best Gross and the Day Two Best Net in "A" Flight.

Alan Laurie missed a play off by three putting the last green to finish at 8 under. Alan won the overall "A" flight trophy and the "A" Flight Best Net on Day One.

The battle for "B" Flight was even closer with Mrs. Nual Russell taking the overall "B" Flight trophy on count back from Gez Tracey, both golfers finishing the tournament on 7 under par. Nual also took the "B" Best Net on Day Two, while Gez Tracey succeeded in wining the "B" Flight Day One Best Net.

At the end of Day One it appeared that the only contest would be between Gez Tracey (11 under) and Alan Laurie (10 under), both shooting lifetime best scores. John Gibson and Pekka Raina were the closest, both five strokes behind the leaders. All fell victim to the slick greens that had been rolled and cut very short for the Championship, not to mention a touch of nerves. Alan reported a legion of three putts while Gez was heard grieving over quadruple and triple bogeys on the back nine that hurt his chances.

A total of 107 Pattaya Sports Club Golfers enjoyed the PSC’s first two day Championship over a very well prepared Khao Kheow Golf & Country Club. This was the largest number of players ever for a PSC golf event.

Average scores for the two days were 13 strokes over par. While scores on Day One, played off the short white tees of the B and C nines, averaged 5 over par, Day 2 scores ballooned to more than 8 over par from the longer yellow tees of the A and B nines.

The PSC Golf Committee wishes to thank all concerned - players and the management and staff of Khao Kheow for their participation and help on the day.

Cahill and Collett best in warm-up for PSC Golf Championship, but Stan Smith stuns field with hole-in-one on 'C3'

Khao Kheow, Monday 12 January (Stableford)

Khao Kheow was looking great, with greens requiring close concentration with the putter, and fringes stopping anything short of the putting surface. The ‘A’ and ‘C’ courses, well and evenly watered, offered their usual challenge reflected in many of the scores. However, the winning scores were good. Shot of the day came from ‘quiet man’ Stan Smith with a Hole-in-One at C3 using his deadly 6 wood off the white tee. A great performance which he hopes to repeat in the Championship later in the week. The other event of the day was a lengthy period of torrential rain, uncharacteristic for the time of year.

Full results follow:

‘A’ Flight

Winner: Hans Collett, 39 points

2nd: Jim Mills, 36 points C/B

3rd: Ray Matti, 36 points C/B

4th: Lars Andersson, 36 points

‘B’ Flight

Winner: John Cahill, 39 points C/B

2nd: Gez Tracey, 39 points C/B

3rd: Ebrahim, 39 points C/B

4th: Pete Galle, 37 points C/B from Kristan Helgasson

Long Drive: Andy Leach.

Near-Pins: A3 Rocky Hudson, A5 Bob Duxbury, C3 Stan Smith - HOLE-in-ONE, C8 Sven Bertlesson.

Tiger roars to the top

On an absolutely "crackin day" with perfect conditions, Roy "Tiger" Mitchell clawed his way to the top of the leader board in round 1 of the Pattaya Golf Society "Tiger Trophy" season played Tuesday, January 13 at Khao Kheow Country Club.

Despite tricky pin positions that resulted in higher scores for most of the field, and an unforgiving Khao Kheow course, Roy shot a blistering scratch 88, including 5 natural pars, for a net 1 under par 71, winning by 2 strokes.

George Meigh also had a fine outing, carding a net 1 over par 73 to finish second. George’s round included 3 pars and 2 birdies, and nearly 3 birdies. On the par three 157 yard A3, George missed a 2 foot birdie putt, admitting afterwards that he was "nervous".

The first PGS season for 1998 will be 11 weeks with the best 7 scores counting towards taking home the "Tiger Trophy". The PGS has also decided that the winner will keep the trophy, eliminating the perpetual trophy format. The winner from each season will keep each trophy.

Big John, with his new 30 handicap, placed third in the first round after carding a net 7 over par 79. Colin Morgan finished fourth, also with a net 7 over par 79, followed by Billy in fifth with a net 8 over par 80.

Nearest to the pin prizes were earned by George Meigh on A3, Colin Morgan on A5, Gordon McKnight on C3 and George Meigh again on C8.

Pattaya Golf Society News & Notes: The PGS elected its 1998 committee after a "stormy" Annual General Meeting on January 12th. Peter Johannson was re-elected to "my last term" as PGS Chairman. Tony Davis was elected Vice-Chairman. Andy Anderson is Treasurer. Alan Lamb is Secretary of the Society. Roy Mitchell will be in control of the Handicaps. Big John will be Tour Organizer. Douglas Fabling is Member at Large.

Minor upset in Sunday quiz league

Which river flows through the city of Limerick? In which year (four years’ margin of error) was the first commercial LP released?

During the Christmas and New Year jamboree, the Sunday quizzers maintained an excellent attendance even though aspirin and Andrews liver salts had become essential by the close of the old year. One stalwart at Palmer’s even claimed that football’s Bobby Moore was still alive (he died in 1993) and that Nostradamus was the Pattaya Mail’s astrologist (he was a sixteenth century Frenchman). Still, trivial pursuits is nothing if not light headed. Or is it hearted?

Cheers’ celebrated eggheads are still ahead, but their lead has been cut to a mere eight points after a modest showing on January 11. They scored 67% whilst rivals at the Rising Sun managed 82%. The consequence is that Cheers’ overall lead in the competition to date has been reduced to a catch-able level. Look below for the current league table. Answers to the questions above are River Shannon and 1948.

Lovers of noteworthy happenings from Plato to Nato assemble at the listed hostelries just before 8.30 p.m. any Sunday night.

Ramrods rebound

Pattaya Sports Club Softball

The weekly Pattaya Sports Club softball game on Sunday, Jan. 18 saw Robert’s Ramrods and Vegas’ Vigilantes split a hotly contested doubleheader.

Kiwi Rick’s lead off homer for the Vigilantes started the scoring, but through the next five innings the Vigilantes could only score one, thanks to tight defense by the Ramrods’ Gordon (Suspension) Bridges in left and Mike (Mr. Ice) Berg at short.

In the top of the seventh, Edmonton Rick, Sterling (Silver) Bechtel, and Frank (open) Wide had run scoring hits for the Vigilantes and brought in four runs to go up six to four.

The Ramrods’ Mark (The Natural) Southampton’s homer in the bottom of the seventh tied the score and pushed the game into extra innings.

With two out and one on in the top of the eighth, John (Baypoint) Bechtel smacked a long home run to left to decided the contest- eight t six for the Vigilantes.

The second game was a see-saw battle that was tied at ten through the first six innings. But with two in and the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, Big Bear Craig launched a rocket to left center for a grand salami and an insurmountable lead.

The Vigilantes managed to score one in the bottom half of the inning but the rally was quickly snuffed giving the Ramrods a sixteen to eleven win.

Games are every Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Pattaya School No. 7 just past Greenway driving range and Caltex gas station on Sukhumvit Highway. Equipment is provided and refreshments are available. All are welcome to play or spectate.
