Fifty students from Ubon Ratchathani University learned about
the history and government of Pattaya during a field trip to city hall.
The public-administration undergrads escorted by Professor Krungthai
Nopparat listened to a presentation from Maj. Jeerawat Sukonthasap,
director of the Peace and Stability Maintenance Department, who covered
the city’s growth from a tiny fishing village to a bustling tourist
center of 150,000 registered residents and a half-million unregistered
denizens.
The non-registered residents, he explained, come from various provinces
to work and settle in Pattaya as it can provide income to people in many
occupations.
The major reviewed the political hierarchy and bureaucracy and the
city’s geography, noting it draws more than 6 million tourists a year
for a full calendar of organized events and festivals.
