BBCU sink Dolphins
with injury time winner

FC at the Thai Army Sports Stadium in Bangkok, Sunday, March 23.
(Photo/Pattaya United FC)
Pattaya United showed renewed fighting spirit in their
comeback at the Thai Army Sports Stadium in Bangkok last Sunday, but a late
goal by BBCU’s Nigerian midfielder Julius Oiboh ultimately consigned the
Dolphins to their fourth consecutive league defeat since the start of the
Division 1 season.
United were on the back foot early in the game against BBCU and it came as
little surprise when the home team took the lead in the 28th minute;
Pattaya’s Suriya Prawarana turning a cross from Oiboh into his own goal as
the pressure finally told on the United defence.
The score remained 1-0 until halftime and the home team were made to work
hard for their second goal, which eventually came in the 74th minute as
Oiboh once again caused problems for the Pattaya defence before squaring the
ball to Coulibaly who calmly side-footed it home.
In previous games this season Pattaya have folded when falling two goals
behind but on this occasion they staged an admirable comeback. Minutes after
Coulibaly’s goal, United stuck back when Cristiano Lopes headed in from
close range to reduce the deficit to 2-1, and then on 85 minutes the
Dolphins remarkably pulled level as Lopes again found space in the box to
head the ball wide of the BBCU keeper.
Sadly there was to be no fairytale ending to the game for Pattaya though as
in the fourth minute of injury time Oiboh broke through the United defence
before slotting the ball past Pattaya keeper Sankla and into the far corner
of the net to make the final score 3-2 to BBCU.
Pattaya United were due to take on TTM Lopburi in midweek, hoping to finally
kick-start their league campaign and get some points on the board, and this
coming Sunday they will travel south to play Krabi FC at the Krabi
Provincial Stadium, kick-off at 6 p.m.

Thomas hat-trick seals win for high riding Pattaya C.C.

Hamza bowls to Stan during Siam C.C.’s run
chase. Dave Callick’s mid-order batting display nearly
single handedly dismantled a spirited Siam CC to ensure Pattaya Cricket
Club, affiliated with Pattaya Sports Club, remained on top of the
Bangkok Cricket League and on course for the title.
Dave
Callick prepares to hit out against Siam C.C. at the Thai Polo Ground on
Satrday, March 22.
At an extremely windy Thai Polo Ground on Saturday, March 22, Pattaya
were asked to bat first by Siam CC and soon found themselves, for the
first time this season, struggling to cope with the swinging ball and
accurate opening bowlers. Venky (0) and John G (8) perished early, soon
to be followed by John Spiers (1) run out without even getting into the
frame when pushing for a second run.
Andy Schofield (16) steadied the innings but after he departed with the
score at 58/4 from 13 overs it was Dave Callick and the club captain
Simon Philbrook who gave the innings a much needed boost. Simon in
particular increased the momentum with 41 from 29 balls and Salman’s
cameo 14 continued the recovery mission. But it was Dave’s measured 57no
that enabled PCC to complete the fight back and post a competitive
155/6.
Siam CC’s response was perfectly timed as at half way 75/3 meant the
game was finely balanced. Then Dave Callick changed the game in the
space of 3 excellent overs. Changing his pace and angle of attack
expertly he removed the middle order in quick succession to finish with
figures of 3/31.
John Spiers (3/21) continued the pressure as he bowled his wily off spin
but it was Thomas (4/27) who brought an abrupt end to the innings with a
devastating hat-trick and Siam CC closed on 121 all out, PCC winning by
34 runs.
PCC’s next game is at the Thai Polo Ground on Sunday 30th March from
10am. Anyone wishing to be involved with the club are encouraged to
visit the club website www.pattayacricket club.com.

Singapore top in Thailand match race championships

The top ranked skippers and
crews pose on the podium at Royal Varuna Yacht Club.
The Kingdom Property Matchrace Thailand Championships,
hosted by the Royal Varuna Yacht Club in Pattaya from March 14-16, is the
premier event of its kind in SE Asia. In near perfect sailing conditions, 11
international teams were prepared to race, each vying for the title and all
important ranking points.
The venue was as usual in front of the Beach Bar allowing the spectators to
see the close dual between the skippers. Often the racing can be fierce if
not aggressive, trying to forfeit the opponent into a mistake using
advantageous tactics.
The organisers supplied well suited boats, identically matched Platu 25
class yachts each fast, maneuverable and ready for battle.
Spectators were treated with a wealth of top name skippers taking part
including Bjorn Hansen of Sweden ranked worldwide no.3 and the best
Matchracers from respective countries Malaysia, Singapore, Korea, India and
Thailand. It promised to be a competitive event.

Competing crews were matched
off in Platu 25 class yachts.
A round robin series with 55 sailing matches occupied
days 1 and 2 with skippers racing against each other to decide the rankings
before the semi-finals, expertly organised by the Race Committee team.
Jeremy Koo (MAS) and Gunwoo Park (KOR) each won 8 races, and only losing 2.
Not far behind were Singapore’s Maximilian Soh and Justin Liu, still winning
an impressive 7 races to secure the last two spots in the semi-finals. Jon
Eriksson (FIN) and Bjorn Hansen (SWE) both missed out of the semis by 1
point, coming 5th and 6th positions respectively.
The semi-final spots were agreed and after a toss of the coin to decide the
boat allocation, Jeremy Koo was to race against Justin Liu. In match racing,
the winner of the round robin gets to choose their opponent. Perhaps a bad
idea as Justin beat Jeremy 2-0 to reach the final. Semi-final 2 between Maxi
and Gunwoo was a much tighter affair with each skipper winning a race in the
best-of-three contest. Maxi then won the pre-start dual to round each mark
in first position in the decider, ultimately securing his spot in the final.

The racing was fiercely
contested throughout the weekend.
A grudge match race awaited in the finals between two
very competitive Singaporean teams, Maximilian Soh and the young Justin Liu
in a best of three series. In a dying wind, the more experienced match racer
Maxi got the better of his compatriot, winning the final 2-0 and ultimately
taking the title.
The prize giving ceremony awaited with RVYC’s Commodore Dave Littlejohn
thanking the sponsors Kingdom Property and Ocean Sunglasses, and all the
volunteers making the event into such a spectacle. Maxi gracefully took the
honors and in doing so, sprayed Champagne F1 style over his fellow skippers.

Heartache for Thai Stix in 20th Annual Mekong Cup ball hockey tournament

Thai Stix take on the Hong
Kong Islanders in the final of the 20th Annual Mekong Cup ball hockey
tournament at Centara Karon Resort in Phuket, Saturday, march 15.
It was a great day of ball hockey in Phuket and a Mekong
Cup Final for the ages! The Bangkok-based Thai Stix ball hockey team rallied
from a 3-1 deficit to tie the Hong Kong Islanders 3-3 in the dying seconds
of the Mekong Cup championship game only to see Hong Kong lead a last-second
rush, score and snatch victory while the Thai Stix were still celebrating
their tying goal.
In ball hockey jargon, after you score, players from the scoring team regain
their half of the court and then “turn and face” their opponents, but if the
scoring team doesn’t do this quickly enough the team that was just been
scored upon can turn it to their advantage, which is exactly what Hong Kong
did to the Thai Stix, not once, but twice, during the final game. On both
occasions, after Thai Stix goals, the Islanders quickly steeled themselves,
refused to grouse and rushed back without missing a beat, scoring both times
and turning the Thai Stix short-lived euphoria into abject misery.
Many of the Hong Kong ball hockey players are also members of that
community’s top ice hockey team, which has a history of not panicking and
winning closing games in the dying minutes.
This year’s tournament, held March 15 at the Centara Karon Resort Phuket,
saw six teams compete for Southeast Asia’s most coveted ball hockey trophy.
Three came from Thailand; the Bangkok Thai Stix, the Bangkok Thundering
Chang and the Chiang Mai Highlanders; two from Singapore, the Chili Crabs
and the veteran Crusty Crabs; and one from Hong Kong, the eventual
champions, the Islanders.
After round-robin play in the morning, the only two teams that remained
without a victory were the Singapore Crusty Crabs and the second Bangkok
team, the Thundering Chang (previously called the Bangkok Bullies). These
teams were eliminated from semi-final action in the afternoon.
The first semi-final saw the top-seeded Thai Stix shut-out the fourth-seeded
Chiang Mai Highlanders 3-0; this was a physical affair, which saw the
Highlanders constantly complaining about the officiating. It didn’t help
that the officials missed an accidental high stick, which cut one of the
Chiang Mai players in the mouth. There is little love lost between the two
squads, and Chiang Mai is still looking for its first win against the
Bangkok squad.
The second semi-final saw second-seeded Hong Kong face off against
third-seeded Singapore Chili Crabs. This match was played after a 45-minute
rain delay. In this game, Hong Kong came out flying and dominated Singapore,
winning easily 6-0.
The Thai Stix last won the Mekong Cup in 2004 and captain John Stevens and
goalie Yves Gaboriault are the only surviving members from that team on the
Stix today though Thundering Chang members Keith Johnston and Scott Murray
as well as tourney organizer John Casella were also part of that dynasty,
which won four titles over five years.
This was a record fifth championship for the Islanders, though they did
share a title with a Slovakian team, the HKL-MJM Petrzalka in 2009. The last
time the Islanders won was in 2011.

Thongchai confident Team Asia can win the Eurasia Cup

Thongchai Jaidee.
Team Asia Captain, Thongchai Jaidee, is looking forward
to this week’s EurAsia Cup, taking place from March 27-29 at the Glenmarie
Golf and Country Club in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and the 44-year-old Thai
golfer is excited ahead of the challenge at the inaugural event.
“I’m really looking forward to captaining Team Asia. I believe I have a very
strong squad which is capable of challenging and beating Team Europe. I’ve
been talking to the Asian players in recent weeks about the possible
pairings and everyone is very excited about coming together under Team Asia
and playing in Malaysia.”
Thongchai is aware that as Team Asia’s captain he has to set the example and
lead from the front.
“As captain, I believe I need to lead by example and that means playing my
best possible golf to deliver points for the team. Match play golf is always
very exciting and the scores very close, so I will be ready to give
everything I have for my team. We are fighting for our pride and honour and
as captain, I am ready to do that, and hopefully inspire the other nine
players to produce their best golf for the team.”
The makeup of Team Asia team excites Thongchai and he describes their
strengths.
“Kiradech Aphibarnrat, Gaganjeet Bhullar, Siddikur Rahman and Anirban Lahiri
all qualified as the top-four Asians from the Asian Tour Order of Merit.
They are all in their 20s and their qualification is a reflection of the
rise of the new generation of players in Asia. They are all very exciting
players who have achieved success at such a young age and their presence in
Team Asia is a reflection of their abilities.
“Koumei Oda, Hideto Tanihara and Kim Hyung-sung enjoyed fantastic seasons in
Japan last year and they are all very capable of matching up against the
Europeans. The trio are all attacking players which will suit the Match play
competitions well.”
Thongchai is hoping the crowds will show a similar passion to the Ryder Cup
crowd and cheer Team Asia onto a famous victory.
“We have seen in the Ryder Cup how the home fans have become the “15th club”
for the home team through their passionate support. I have played in
Malaysia for a very long time and I know the fans love their golf. With my
success in the Malaysian Open in the past and with Kiradech being the
reigning Malaysian Open champion, I’m sure we will have plenty of local
support which will be important for the team as we seek to win the EurAsia
Cup!”
Team Asia

Gaganjeet Bhullar (India), Nicholas Fung (Malaysia), Kim Hyung-sung (Korea,)

McGuigan makes hay
at Green Valley
IPGC golf from The Tara Court Golf
Sunday, March 16,
Green Valley - Stableford
A much more pleasant day in Green Valley today compared to the previous
week. We got off well before our allotted tee time and with no one in front
of us we got around in less than four hours, which is how golf should be
played.
Joe
McArdle.
We had one very good score today as Donal McGuigan ran away with it with an
excellent forty one points and will be in for a sharp reduction in his
handicap. After that the scores were a bit more mundane with Declan Kelly
coming second with thirty four followed at one point increments by Joe
McArdle and John Beshoff.
1st Donal McGuigan (24) 41pts
2nd Declan Kelly (13) 34pts
3rd Joe McArdle (13) 33pts
4th John Beshoff (14) 32pts
Thursday, March 20,
Silky Oak - Stableford
Silky Oak today for a change and this course seems to be getting
better and is currently in excellent condition, both the fairways and the
greens. Very few people on the course today so we got around very quickly.
It was very hot but as everyone has to take a golf cart here the heat is not
so much of a problem.
Joe McArdle took the honors today with thirty eight points followed closely
by Shaun Merriman just one back. Charlie Lapsley took third with thirty four
points on count back over George Cullen, Frank McGowan and John Beshoff.
We had four ‘2’s today from Frank McGowan (2), Declan Kelly and John
Beshoff.
1st Joe McArdle (13) 38pts
2nd Shaun Merriman (10) 37pts
3rd Charlie Lapsley (8) 34pts
Note: The Tara Court Golf Group play every Sunday, Tuesday and

Rothwell rocks at Khao Kheow
PSC golf from The Golf Club
Steve Ellison
Monday, March 17, Green Valley (white tees) –
Stableford
T1st Geoff Doody (22) 39pts
T1st Gary Blackburn (9) 39pts
3rd Roger Newman (17) 36pts
T4th Paul Greenaway (11) 35pts
T4th Mark Venning (11) 35pts
Shameless plug: The April Schedule is up and a couple of interesting things to
point out. On Wednesday the 2nd, we are playing Laem Chabang with a 3:30 tee
time! Yes, the back 9 will be under the lights so it should be a nice cool round
of golf and at 1,950 baht, you won’t get this great Jack Nicklaus track any
cheaper. Also, the Songkran trip to Khao Yai is from the 15th-20th so get yer
skates on and sign up quick.

Alan Rothwell with John Emmerson
and Peter Larsson.
How does he do it? 2 weeks ago he placed third, last week he
placed second, and this week he wins it with 39 points! It was a triumphant
climb for Geoff Doody as for the last three weeks he has just kept on getting
better and better. Gary Blackburn (who won at St. Andrews last week) was also
good for an impressive 39 to share the win with Geoff, and Gary has also been
playing some great golf lately.
Roger Newman strolled along to a 36 for sole third place today, making it look
easy, as Mark Venning and Paul “Take it Easy” Greenaway shared 4th position.
The course played beautifully once again, so it’s no wonder we get a full
sign-up sheet every Monday for Green Valley. The weather today was getting hot
in the afternoon, so our amazing winter of cool golf days is now officially
over! Oh well, it was great while it lasted.
Wednesday, March 19, Khao Kheow (white tees) – Stableford
1st Alan Rothwell (7) 39pts
T2nd Peter Larsson (13) 38pts
T2nd Phil Williams (11) 38pts
It just doesn’t get any better than Khao Kheow these days as the course was
turned out in pristine condition for today’s comp.
Finally, Alan Rothwell gets it all together! Alan is one of our better golfers
and plays a very consistent game. He didn’t quite find his form last week at Soi
Dao but this week it all came together for him. It ain’t easy shooting a 39 off
a stingy 7 handicap so he had to earn his points on this difficult course. Well
played buddy, bridesmaid no more!
Peter and Phil were both hot on his heels and just a stroke back on 38 to tie
for second, which is a whole bunch of great scores on today’s podium.
Friday, March 21, Burapha C & D – 18th PSC Charity Classic
Just a quick note of congratulations to our regulars Steve Mulberry
and Nigel Flanagan for getting 3rd place at the PSC Charity Classic on Friday.
That is a great result when you have 160 golfers in the field! Also, our
gratitude goes to Joe Mooneyham, Khun Mai and the staff at the PSC for all the
hard work for this event. The Golf Club was proud to be a hole sponsor out there
today, as we look forward to this event which gets better and better every year.

Balfour blitz at Greenwood
PSC golf from The Billabong Golf Bar
(L-R): Rang, Shane, Lot, Peter, Tim and Barry.
Monday, March 17,
Greenwood - Stableford
Greenwood was the place today and what great condition it was in - value for
money whichever way you say it. We were joined today by the boys from
Dongara and Perth and they enjoyed a good day out and a round of just over 4
hours. A big thanks to John Player for looking after everyone in place of
the Capt, who had other things to occupy his mind.
There some good scores among the ordinary ones but the NAGA prize went to
Doug Stevens with a fine 22 point total. Fourth place went to Charlie with
36 points, being beaten on count back by the inform Owen Walkley while
second spot was taken by Rick Forrest with 37 points. But in first, and
having the best day on a golf course in his life was Tim Balfour who came
home one under off the stick for 47 points off his 12 handicap.
There was only one ‘2’ today coming from Charlie who started the second nine
with a birdie four-pointer and a three-pointer for his two on number eleven,
not a bad effort mate.
Wednesday, March 19, Green Valley - Stableford
What a day out at Green Valley where we were joined by Jock
Drummond and his golfers from Dongara. The course was in good condition but
some of the fairways are starting to dry out and the greens were there usual
selves, fast with the grain and a little slower against.
The challenge went out to Capt. Bob and Steve Hodgman (two lefties) to play
Tim (the 47 point man) Balfour and Jock Drummond, a three handicapper. The
lefties were two down at the turn and were another two down standing on the
14th tee. Jock was having the time of his life bagging the hell out of the
opposition while Tim was saying nothing, but at the 18th it was a different
story and all was quiet where the Capt actually helped by winning the last
and all that changed hands was the match with a win each on the nines.
Really a good result!
With eight groups we went down to fifth place with prizes today and taking
it was Robert Marsh on a four-way count back (all with 35 points) over
Cottee, Jock and Shane. Fourth place went to Shane Brown while third was
taken by Peter LeNoury with an even par 36. Barry Williams had a good day
out for a change to take second place with 37 points and first today was the
‘Sugar Man’ Ray Handford with a fine 40 points.
There were four ‘2’s coming from Robert Marsh, Peter LeNoury, John Aylott
and Dongara boy Shane Brown.
Friday, March 21, Crystal Bay - Stableford
With just a small field today we played Crystal Bay and we got
around in three hours forty minutes. The greens were not the same as you
normally expect at this course; they were quite grainy and hadn’t been cut
for a day or two.
Bob St Aubin started out like a really good golfer but John Player and Capt
Bob dragged him down to their level on the back nine, much to his disgust.
Taking first spot today was Kevin Wild with a great 38 points (yes George, I
know you are reading this on your way to Angola but he really did get this
score). Coming second was Mick Thomas with 36 points, his first ever
placing, and third was Owen Walkley with 35. There was only one ‘2’ today,
coming from John Player with a thirty-foot putt that spent more time in the
air than on the green but it was a good shot anyway.
Note: The Billabong is situated just off Siam Country Club Road
looking straight down Lake Mabprachan. Give Bob a call on 082 204 3411 if
you are looking for a game.
Simpson shines at Emerald
PSC golf from The Beaver Bar & Grill
Friday the 14th of March dawned with high humidity and
gentle breezes. The golfers all started out to face a possible sweaty day on
the links at Emerald. The course was in decent shape while the fairways
seemed hard and the ball would bounce and carry some extra distances as a
result.
After the golfers completed their rounds they retired back to the Beaver Bar
for nourishment and refreshments while the scorecards were checked. Larry
Willett won second place on count back with 34 points and Paul Simpson took
the top prize as well as nearest to the pin for the day.
The Beaver Bar wishes to thank all those in attendance.
Links Challenge scores again for Jesters Charity Drive

Mike Contoni (left) presents to
the winning team members, Joe McArdle, Shaun Merriman and George Cullen.
Urasin Khantaraphan
The fourth annual Links Golf Challenge took place on Tuesday 18th of
March at Khao Kheow Country Club, and this year the numbers were down from the
126 of the previous year to just 36 players, playing in teams of four.
The conditions however were ideal and those who took part were able to have an
enjoyable and leisurely game without the pressure of having to rush due to a
full field of players.
The prize giving took place the same evening at the Links Hotel on Soi Buakow
where the players enjoyed a buffet and a few well earned beers and waited to see
who would scoop the prizes, which included some golf clubs, bags, shirts and
green fees valued at a total of over 76,000 baht.

Tournament runners-up: Declan
Kelly, Frank McGowan, John Beshoff and Charlie Lapsey with Mike Contoni
(standing rear).
The first place winners for the team
tournament were Joe McArdle, Shaun Merriman, Tony Pike and George Cullen with a
score of 62 gross, net 56.4. Along with the title they won 4 green fee vouchers
for Siam Country Club. The second placed team of Frank McGowan, Declan Kelly,
John Beshoff and Charlie Lapsey (net 58.5) won shirts from Fenix Golf and green
fees for Khao Kheow, and completing the podium in third was the quartet of
Donald McGuigan, George Pearson, Robert Hanson and David Hogan who also won 4
green fees for Khao Kheow.
The day managed to raise a grand total of 91,250 baht which will go straight to
the Jesters Care for Kids Charity Drive. This means that around 470,000 baht has
been raised by the Links Challenge in the last four years for Jesters.
The organizer and part owner of the Links Hotel, Mike Contoni, stated that times
were hard at the moment with tourism being down but pointed out that “If it’s
hard for us it’s even harder for those who are supported by Jesters and we (the
golfers) want to give back to the community.”

Some great prizes were on offer at
this year’s tournament.

Sharpshooter Chur rides into town
Travellers Rest Golf Group

Mike Rushant and Any Rich.
Andy Rich
Monday, March 17, Khao Kheow - Stableford
We started off last week on Monday with St
Patrick’s Day, so I was expecting a large turnout of men from the Emerald
Isle as for the last couple of months Pattaya has been awash with them.
Instead in a field of twenty six golfers just five were Irish so I can only
assume that all the rest have returned home to tend to their gardens of
Lucky Heather and Four Leaf Clover and to feed their Leprachauns. Still, the
ones that were left were full of the old blarney about why they hadn’t won
the competition that day at Khao Kheow.
Khao Kheow (B & C) is indeed a tough golf course and most golfers, including
myself, struggle to keep a good round going, normally failing miserably. So
when I tell you that the winners of the two divisions on the day recorded
winning scores of 40 and 42 points respectively, you will probably agree
with me that they are both either Superman or complete bandits. Next time I
see Mike Rushant and Bill Chur I expect them to be either wearing masks or
their underpants outside their shorts.
Mike Rushant won Division 1 by five clear shots from Gerry Fernandez in
second place and Terry Worth finished in third. Gerry Fernandez was
obviously so shocked at being so far behind the leader he immediately went
down with a terrible affliction called shanking. By the end of the week
everybody was calling him Ravi (Ravi Shankar) and he was seriously thinking
of giving up golf and taking up sitar lessons.
In Division 2 Bill Chur did even better by winning his flight by seven clear
shots from Gary Bennett in second and Glen Kananoa in third. Bill was last
seen riding off into the sunset on his trusty steed laughing heartily.
Div. 1 (0-14)
1st Mike Rushant (12) 40pts
2nd Gerry Fernandez (12) 35pts
3rd Terry Worth (13) 33pts
Div. 2 (15+)
1st Bill Chur (15) 42pts
2nd Gary Bennett (17) 35pts
3rd Glen Kananoa (15) 33pts
Tuesday, March 18, Green Valley - Stableford
On Tuesday it was off to Green Valley and the
Irish contingent was down to three hardy souls who had recovered enough from
the shenanigans of the night before to take to the golf course. A few of the
other nationalities also failed to show and we were down to just one
division on the day.
Bill Chur had a change of mind and decided to turn his horse around,
adjusted his stetson and return for another helping of rich pickings back in
Pattaya. Despite being docked two shots to his handicap for his remarkable
effort the day before at Khao Kheow, he romped off with the first prize yet
again leaving the townsfolk mumbling in their beers. Ged Higgins and Jim
Cleaver did their best to throw a lasso over Bill and haul him back to the
pack but just failed.
1st Bill Chur (13) 37pts
2nd Ged Higgins (19) 36pts
3rd Jim Cleaver (10) 36 pts
Thursday, March 20, Bangpakong - Stableford
Thursday was a trip to one of my favourite courses
- Bangpakong. Always in immaculate condition and a little more forgiving
than a lot of other golf courses around Pattaya, everybody seems to come
away from here feeling good about their game, except of course if your name
is Gerry Fernandez.
On the day the best looking man in Pattaya certainly had a good day, yes you
guessed it, I won. Playing like I used to many moons ago it all came
together and I held off the opposition to walk away with the first prize.
Dave Palmer in second and Phil Battah in third made it an extremely tight
finish but I managed to keep my nose in front, and so I should, it is large
enough.
1st Andy Rich (22) 39pts
2nd Dave Palmer (7) 38pts
3rd Phil Battah (12) 37pts
Saturday, March 22, Eastern Star - Stableford
On Saturday the TRGG brought the week to a close
by heading off to Eastern Star, another course that can give you a nasty
kick in the butt when all seems to be going well.
Jim Cleaver invited an American mate along called Craig Matthews and he very
impolitely took advantage of the TRGG’s renowned hospitality by walking off
with first place. The genial giant that is Louis Flanagan at last won
something for the Irish by taking second place and my playing partner John
Baxter showed some good form to take third.

Willem & Jeff
quinella the week
PSC golf from Siam Country Resort

Jeff Wylie (left) with Willem Lasonder.
Tuesday, March 18, Greenwood - Stableford
Tuesday was a fine sunny day, with a light breeze blowing
just hard enough to keep the heat at bay. Greenwood was our venue with
the A & B course being our allocated test, with the fairways and greens
being in very good condition, considering the recent dry spell.
Willem Lasonder (19) led the way home with 35 points, after a great back
9, beating Jeff Wylie (8) on count back 22/18. Near pins were spread
around between Jonathan, George, Willem & Neil.
Thursday, March 20, Khao Kheow - Stableford
Thursday saw us travel the Hwy 7 north to Khao Kheow, with
the C & A loops being our test of the day. The course was in great
condition with the fairways well grassed and the greens running smooth,
although a little slower than expected.
Jeff Wylie (8) gained some retribution over second placed Willem
Lasonder (19), scoring a solid 38 points, to Willem’s 36. Near pins went
to Jeff, Martin, and Tom with 2.
Friday saw a contingent from SCR play at Burapha in the PSC Charity
Classic. The event was enjoyable, although it was a long day in the sun
with the round taking well over 5 hours. Willem won a “C” Flight
technical award and thanks go to Joe and his PSC team for providing the
opportunity of a good day’s golf.
Note: Siam Country Resort, Restaurant & Bar is located just off Siam
Country Club Rd, after going under the arch past the 7/11, turn right
after 50 metres, with the venue on the left another 200 metres along.
Golf from here is generally played on Tuesday & Thursday, with the
Resort hosting prompt presentations on both days.
As a PSC affiliated venue we welcome ALL golfers, including ladies &
seniors (>60s) who have opted for the “Silver” tee option. Call 089 094
1841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers & good
golfing!

Graham beats the heat
and the field
PSC golf Bunker Boys @ The Ranch
Monday, March 17, Mt. Shadow –
Stableford
Weather conditions were overcast, windy and very humid, which
seemed to sap everybody’s energy except John Graham who had an excellent
37pts. The back nine punished everybody except John who had 20pts on the
back nine, with the next best being on 16.
Mashie, the winner in each of his last 3 outings, started off par, birdie,
par, bogie, par - 13 points after 5 holes - and whilst he faded on the back
nine he still managed second place to be leading the golfer of the month
competition.
The course was in good shape except for perennial complaint about the
bunkers. Difficult to understand both here and Crystal Bay have put endless
hours into mowing all the rough but cannot seem to put effort into the
bunkers. Pity, as this is an excellent test of golf.
1st John Graham (11) 37pts
2nd Mashi Kaneta (13) 33pts
3rd Keith Smithson (2) 31pts
4th Dave Ashman (15) 31pts
Near Pins: Tony Robbins, Tony Berry and Keith Smithson
Wednesday, March 19, Silky Oaks - Rainbow Stableford
Our first visit to this course as a society was selected to
become a rainbow competition where the golfer must take 6 tee shots each off
the red, white (yellow today) and blues in any order they choose.
The format was chosen as golfers needed to clear 200 yards on a couple of
the holes off the yellows, which is enough to deter a great portion of our
regulars. In addition to these carries there were another 12, mostly over
water and with many elevated greens, so the golfers were in for a tough day.
Carts are compulsory here and the 10 minute ride to the first tee showed the
necessity. Word of warning to future golfers, there is only one drinks hole
after the 4th and you come round again after the 13th so stock up. Another
quirk of this course is that 2 fairways are shared and if your caddy doesn’t
speak English too well it can be a bit confusing.
Mine host Buff was having a good day until the 4th fairway where a beautiful
bunker shot landed 2ft from the pin - unfortunately it was the wrong one! A
lot of the greens are not visible from the tee so having to play blind and
not knowing any potential problems wasn’t what I would call fun, a
subsequent visit should be easier. The course itself is very scenic, well
manicured with good fairways and greens, although the latter erred on the
slow side.
The combination of carries, and lack of course knowledge inevitably
contributed to low scoring from the 14 golfers. Only Colin Greig in first
place on 38 points and Peter Hapgood in second, a point behind, managed to
master the problems. Even our tame golf pro Keith Smithson could only muster
30 points, partially due to water sneakily placed down a steep bank behind a
green.
A fourth course is under construction next to Silky Oaks but the majority of
our fraternity are still struggling with numbers 2 and 3.
1st Colin Greig (7) 38pts
2nd Peter Hapgood (20) 37pts
3rd Geoff Hart (23) 31pts
4th Keith Smithson (2) 30pts
Near Pins: Colin Greig, Peter Hapgood and Geoff Parker
Friday, March 21, Pleasant Valley - Stableford
An unpleasant surprise awaited us on arrival at Pleasant Valley
as we discovered that our booking had been mysteriously “lost”, but after a
short discussion the management agreed to accommodate our five groups,
teeing off from the 10th tee.
The course was generally in good shape, but the slow greens took some
getting used to, particularly on uphill putts against the grain which
required the use of a driver! The round progressed without any holdups,
although a thunder storm passed close by, sprinkling us with a few drops of
rain which was the first precipitation we’ve experienced on a golf course
since early November.
There was no doubt who was the star performer today as Paul Smith returned
to the clubhouse with an impressive score of 41 points, equating to a gross
score of 70 off his handicap of 3 (soon surely to be reduced to 2!).
Only a single flight today with Keith Smithson (37 points) taking second
place ahead of Geoff Parker on a count back, and Mike Lloyd (36) taking the
final podium position.
Although Gordon Melia professes not to be a fan of this course, he’s making
something of a speciality of the par three 8th hole, taking his second near
pin prize in successive games here with yet another of his now infamous
skimmer shots.
1st Paul Smith (3) 41pts
2nd Keith Smithson (2) 37pts
3rd Geoff Parker (15) 37pts
4th Mike Lloyd (14) 36pts
Near Pins: Gordon Melia, Geoff Parker, Keith Smithson and Paul Smith
Note: The Bunker Boys is a PSC affiliated golf society that plays out
of The Ranch bar on Pattaya 3rd Road (in front of the fire station, and
almost opposite the Buffalo Bar). We play on Mondays, Wednesdays, and
Fridays, meeting at The Ranch at 9 a.m. for breakfast and transportation,
and new players are always welcome. Contact “Buff” on 086 046 5091 or 080
605 5663 for all enquiries or go to website: www. bunkersociety.com.

Andre and the scribe scale the Mountain
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
Derek Brook
Tuesday, March 18, Mountain Shadow – Stableford
This course was once the most feared around. Stand
on the first tee and you knew you were in for a hard time and I remember
taking a large group of golfers here some years ago and they all got
beaten out of sight. Indeed, the winning score on that day was just 28
points. Let the wind blow here and you will spend a long time in the
trees which seem to swallow the balls up. Best you get out of them as
soon as you can, but that can be really difficult!

Andre Van Dyk (left) with
Derek Brook.
The real problem in years past though
used to be the greens that were really fast and a bit of wind could blow
the ball anywhere. Some of them at times were so tricky that a four-putt
was really not just a possibility but was the norm. With all this in
mind I wondered how the day would pan out with only a mild wind blowing.
So it was off the white tees to play safe and let us get underway.
Usually these days when we play this course it is packed, but on this
day when we got to the first tee the way ahead was clear and we were
away nice and early. In fact it was some time before we spotted the
groups ahead. The wind was still a bit blustery but all in all it was a
great day out. The greens were still tricky and I suspect they always
will be, but the fairways were reasonable and the rough fine except for
those trees.
One thing I always do, and only at this course, is sit by the start and
have a cold beer from the kiosk. The view over the last few holes and
the first few holes is a pleasure and usually a couple of the players
stop and spend the time with me. Just a one off but a real pleasure!
Back at Bert’s early it was time to relax before the results. The scores
were on the whole good and in the A Flight, 0 to 18, the winner was
Andre Van Dyk with a fine 41 points, ahead of Mark west with 38 points
on count back over Doug Maiko in third.
In the B Flight the winner with 40 points was your scribe, Derek Brook,
while some way back in second was Barry Elphick with 33 on a count back
over George King in third. T.T.F.N.
Near Pins: Andre Van Dyk, Doug Maiko, Tom Cotton, Barry Elphick.

Khun Wichai’s big day -
another ‘Ace’
The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC) at the Elephant Bar
The Pattaya Golf Society travelled to
Green Valley on Monday, 17th March to play a stableford competition in
two divisions with the cut set at seventeen and under. With a course in
excellent condition, white tees set well back, a fresh breeze blowing
and quick greens the scene was set for something special.
Scores were unspectacular with Murray Edwards recording 34 points for
third in the second flight, one behind lady golfer Orawan Meeraka’s
second place 35 and a further shot back from the winner Jim Ferris,
returning a level par 36 points for the win. In the top flight Rob
Lamond joined Peter Ditz and Wichai Tananusorn on 33 points to share the
win whilst Peter and Wichai recorded birdie ‘2’s on the fourth hole.
Khun Wichai went one better than that with a quality ace on the twelfth
hole to give him his second career hole-in-one. This one was vintage,
with a wedge shot landing just behind the pin and dragging back
unerringly into the hole. Wonderful Wichai and thanks for the
celebratory bell ringing back at the Elephant Bar in Soi Buakhao.
The only disappointment is that his feat will be almost ignored by the
Green Valley as he paid his green fee in cash and the hole sponsor would
only recognise payment by the company’s credit card. However PGS and
IPGC are far more generous with a new inscribed golf bag awaiting the
popular Thai golfer. Well done Wichai!
Grimes & greens decisive
For golfers there is nothing quite like
having a “new” venue to play and the redeveloped course at Pattavia
certainly fits the bill in that respect, especially now the new
clubhouse is open and functional. Little wonder then that it was on the
schedule for the Pattaya Golf Society on Wednesday, 17th March.
The course itself is in good condition with greens which may be the most
difficult to read in the area because of the nature of the grain and the
bunkers are also in good condition, were one to stray.
The field was divided into two flights at fourteen and under and in the
top flight Rick Schramm, David Thomas and Dave Moriarty all shared
second place with 30 points each, three behind the flight winner Takeshi
Hakozaki, on 33. In the second flight Larry Slattery was third with 31
points, close on the heels of second placed golfer Dave Plaiter with 32
points. The winner with the best score of the day was Ken Grimes with 34
points.
John Chelo and fellow Canadian Rick Schramm both shared the ‘2’s pot and
Jack Robertson took the Booby Bevy for being the only Canuck in the
field not to record a birdie.
Kevin Cumming took the Elephant Bar consolation beer as an appropriate
yet lucky non-winner and David Thomas, running the day, warmly thanked
all who had contributed to the day, including drivers and mine hosts of
the Elephant Bar in Soi Buakhao, Peter, Shane and Khun Kob. Pattavia?
Yes we’ll certainly have some more of that!
Stern test at
Mountain Shadow
The Pattaya Golf Society ended the week on
Friday, 21st March with a visit to Mountain Shadow to play a stableford
competition on the testing course. The course was in fine condition with
plenty of run on the fairways and greens which lived up to their
reputation as tough and grainy.
The field played from blues and whites in two flights, cut at seventeen
and under. In the second flight senior Aussie golfer Bryan Brown played
solidly again to share second place with Masashi Iizumi on 32 points
whilst Peter Allen used his length to shackle the course with 34 points
for the win. In the blue flight Greg Gawron and John Chelo shared second
place with 33 points but were nosed out by Dave Moriarty, “Mr
Consistency” indeed, with 34 points.
Rick Schramm again recorded a birdie ‘2’ on the eighth to share the
bonus pot with Peter Allen who also excelled with a fine birdie on the
tough seventeenth.
Rod Stevens enjoyed the consolation beer whilst the Booby Bevy went to
Syd Harrison as a farewell gesture prior to his departure to the UK for
the summer, as another excellent golfing week drew to a close at the
Elephant Bar in Soi Buakhao.

A Flight (0-19)
1st Leif Kirkgaard (18) 46pts
2nd Peter Bygballe (19) 43pts
3rd Doug Maiko (17) 38pts
4th Henning Olsen (14) 35pts

Near Pins: A6 Ken Madsen, B2 Steen Habersaat, B5 Doug Maiko
Long Putts: A9 Mike Winfield, B9 Mark Erikson
It was off to play a green course today for St. Patrick’s Day, up the
331 for 55 minutes to Greenwood and we got off on time under sunny skies
and with a nice breeze. The course was in fine condition but outside was
very dry and there was evidence of many fires, even one towards Pattavia
that threatened to overrun us on the B course.

Jan Lovgreen (left) and
Mike Allidi (right) with Dave Richardson.
We got around in 4 hours and 40 minutes and back in
the clubhouse welcomes went out to Mark Erikson and Benny Andersen and
some goodbyes to Kaj Aabling and Peter Bygballe, both going back to
Denmark but returning in October.
Two flights today with the cut at handicap 19 and Leif Kirkgaard won the
premier division with a superb 46 points to finish three clear of Peter
Bygballe in second. Doug Maiko and Henning Olsen were some way back in
third and fourth respectively.
Mike Winfield stood atop the B flight with 38 points, one up on Steen
Habersaat in second, with Kurt Sandgaard and Kaj Aabling filling the
minor podium places.
Thursday, March 20, Pattavia - Stableford
A Flight (0-19)
1st Mike Allidi (3) 36pts
2nd Lotte Boskov (18) 33pts
3rd Leif Kirkgaard (18) 29pts
4th Tate Akifumi (14) 28pts
B Flight (20+)

3rd Jan Bogh (20) 31pts
4th Mike Winfield (23) 29pts
Near Pins: Lotte Boskov and Steen Habersaat
Long Putts: Jan Lovgreen and Tate Akifumi.
Pattavia was the game today and the course was in fairly good condition
but suffering from a lack of water, however the greens were still very
fast. Considering all the putts we had we still managed to make it
around in just about 4 hours.
Mike Allidi won the A Flight today with a fine 36 points while Lotte
Boskov took second with 33. Leif Kirkgaard was third with 29 and Tate
Akifumi placed fourth with 28.
Jan Lovgreen won the B Flight by a mile with 38 points and Steen
Habersaat took second on a count back over Jan Bogh in third, both with
31’s. Mike Winfield completed the podium in fourth.

Butler & Gardner
combo wins again
PSC golf from The Caddyshack Golf

Phonsie McGahan and Ted
Gardner.
Monday 17th March at Green Valley was
a good day for Canada when Don Hachey (H/cap 18) edged to a win with 38
points. The runner-up was Paul Walia (15) with 37 points, third place
went to Ted Gardner (8) with 36 and fourth to John Knight (22) with 35
points.
Wednesday 19th took us to Plutaluang Navy Course where the tees, greens
and bunkers were all in good shape, but when are they going to put in a
proper fairway sprinkler system? The only player to better his handicap
was Phonsie McGahan (7) who took first place with 38 points. Our
Canadian friend Don Hachey played well again and took second with 36
points while Jason Barnett (4) finished third with 35, just ahead of Ted
Gardner on 33.
Quite a few of our regulars are heading home before the end of the month
and so we decided to bring the 2-man scramble forward one week to Friday
21st, since everyone enjoys this format. Back to back victories went to
the team of Jack Butler and Ted Gardner who carded a gross 71 to give a
winning 66.4 net score. Close behind with 66.8 was our septuagenarian
team of Phonsie McGahan and Bruce Tollitt while third place went to
Jason Barnett and Phil Cawse with a net 68 and fourth to Dave Hester and
Peter Henderson with a net 69.2.
Near pin prizes went to Les Charles, Don Hachey, Phil Cawse and Leif
Petterson.
Note: The Caddyshack is located on Soi 17 off 3rd Road or soi 8 off
Thepprasit Road. All golfers are welcome and reservations are taken at

Blacky, Silvano & Plums get the chocolates
PSC Golf from The Growling Swan

Silvano Pizzato, Ian
Masterson, Peter Blackburn & Roy Dayton.
Peter Blackburn
Monday, March 17, Bangpakong – Stableford
Despite the fact that it was St Patrick’s Day we had 3
Irishmen in the excellent field of 28 and we were all looking forward to
re-visiting Bangpakong Riverside after many months absence. Although the
numbers were very good I suspect there were still a few who deemed the
journey “too far” but as we all found out they were the ones that missed
a treat!
We had a very good run through the Pattaya traffic and up number 7
arriving at the golf course just 65 minutes later and the course was not
at all busy so we were invited to commence at our convenience. Our first
four-ball teed off 10 minutes behind schedule at 10.10 am with the
nearest group in front about 2 holes away and poor old Ebrahim appeared
to be in a dream world as we had to send Dick to extract him from the
practice putting green to take his spot in the first group, hence the
delay in teeing off.

Kevin Waycott, John
Anderson, Rita Zoebelli & John Davis.
As mentioned earlier, it had been some time since we
had played the course and I must say that all the raves about it over
the last few weeks were true as it was in magnificent condition with the
lush fairways and superb greens.
We continued at a very good pace with the groups ahead never a problem
and as it was very hot & humid a 10 minute drinks break before the 12th
tee was necessary but regardless of that we managed to complete the full
round in the very good time of four hours & five minutes. Great golf
course, terrific company – does it get any better than this?
Once again your humble correspondent Peter “Blacky” Blackburn showed
some good form and was the Division A winner with 42 points. With two on
41 points a count back was required which resulted in Big Bill Steiman
(21 point back nine) taking second spot from Gerd Riedler (20 point back
nine) in third place.
In a high scoring day it was Silvano Pizzato who won Division B with the
best score of the day, 43 points, and Mark “Westy” West was second with
41. With 2 golfers on 40 points another count back was necessary to
decide third place and that went to John Davis (22 point back nine) from
an unlucky Duangjai Tusagad (19 point back nine).
In a big form reversal Roy “Plums” Dayton won the C Division with 38
points and in yet another count back with two on 35 points it was Geri
Crilly (17 point back nine) who finished second from JC Lhoste (15 point
back nine) in third place.
Division A (0-13)
1st Peter Blackburn (13) 42pts
2nd Bill Steinman (10) 41pts
3rd Gerd Riedler (8) 41pts
Division B (14-19)
1st Silvano Pizzato (19) 43pts
2nd Mark West (14) 41pts
3rd John Davis (15) 40pts
Division C (20+)
1st Roy Dayton (24) 38pts
2nd Geri Crill (27) 35pts
3rd JC Lhoste (23) 35pts
Near Pins: 4th – Peter Blackburn, 7th – Ebrahim, 13th – Gerd Riedler,
16th – Gerd Riedler
Long Putts: 9th – Takeshi Hakozaki, 18th – Frank Sharratt
The Growling Swan NAGA Award (awarded to the golfer who has the worst
score on the day and discreetly their score is not made public) was won
by Ian Masterson who accepted the award like the good sport that he is.
Thursday, March 20, Green Valley – Stableford
Once again there was a very good response to the outing at
Green Valley and after a late withdrawal I referred to our waiting list
and immediately found a replacement which brought us back to a full
field of 32.
We departed the GS a couple of minutes early at 8.28 am and after a
short 39 minute drive arrived at the golf course just 39 minutes later
to find things reasonably quiet there. After a quick check in we rocked
up at the first tee and with a group having hit off a couple of minutes
earlier we were invited to commence, which we did and sent our first of
eight four-balls away 5 minutes ahead of our booked time of 9.43 am.
The weather was once again hot with a bit of wind and the golf course as
usual in terrific shape with the lush fairways and beautifully prepared
greens. We did catch up with the golfers ahead a couple of times and had
to wait a few minutes but all in all it was not a problem and our full
round was completed in four hours & twenty minutes.
Division A was well won by Kevin “Wayco” Waycott with a terrific 42
points which is a great score on this track and with 2 golfers on 35
points a count back was required which resulted in Mashi Kaneta (17
point back nine) taking second spot from Frankie “Hollywood” Sharratt
(16 point back nine) in third place. Paul “Hacky” Hack’s 34 points were
enough for him to secure fourth place.
In B Division it was the consistent John Davis who was the winner with a
fine 37 points with another consistent golfer Mark “Westy” West in
second spot. In third place came Thientong Charoenrung with 32 points
and fourth place went to Alain “Inspector Clouseau” Taddei who had 31
points.
Another fine score won Division C with Rita Zoebelli scoring 40 points,
just 1 point ahead of another of our lady golfers Seesa Phompinmon who
finished second. Veteran Jack Robertson came third with 33 points and JC
Lhoste was third after scoring 31 points.
Division A (0-13)
1st Kevin Waycott (10) 42pts
2nd Mashi Kaneta (12) 35pts
3rd Frank Sharratt (13) 35pts
4th Paul Hack (13) 34pts
Division B (14-22)
1st John Davis (15) 37pts
2nd Mark West (14) 35pts
3rd Thientong Charoenrung (19) 32pts
4th Alain Taddei (17) 31pts
Division C (23+)
1st Rita Zoebelli (24) 40pts
2nd Seesa Phompinmon (27) 39pts
3rd Jack Robertson (25) 33pts
4th JC Lhoste (23) 31pts
Near Pins: 4th – Don Richardson, 12th – Seesa Phompinmon, 16th – John
Davis
Long Putts: 9th - Jack Robertson, 18th – Dave Neal
The Growling Swan NAGA Award was won by John Anderson and JC kindly
paraded Deefa the Dog and of course collected many donations for the
needy in Pattaya from our generous Growling Swan Golfers.

Milner bounces back to win Hua Hin title
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

(From left): Greg LeBlanc,
Rod Crosswell, Bruce Milner, Keith Buchanan & Steve Mann.
Monday, March 17, Imperial Lake
View A & B – Stableford
56 players and friends made the trip for the 3rd Hua Hin H’Cap,
organised by the Outback Golf Bar. Many of the guys who travelled up
from Aus had been on an Outback Tour before and it was very like an old
friends’ reunion and it was great to see the camaraderie amongst all
from Pattaya and Aus alike.
The format was the same as ever, three tournament rounds on Monday,
Tuesday and Thursday with Wednesday being an optional day for golf. The
chosen courses this year:- Round 1 on A & B at Imperial LakeView; Round
2 at the renowned Black Mountain and the Final Round at the fantastic
Banyan course.
We had played Imperial for the first time when we came here last August;
it’s an old style somewhat colonial style course bearing remarkable
similarities in style to Springfield and I would guess from the same
era. It was OK in the wet season but regrettably the long dry season
this year had turned the course very brown and hard; giving way to very
tight baldish lies. The greens were ok but tricky to putt on but overall
there were a number of negative comments about the course.

Bruce
Milner was the overall winner with 109 points.
It won’t be on the August schedule and there will be a number of others
(golf courses) we will try before or if we return here. Their
hospitality here however was great and I thank the Manager for
everything he did for us.
The scoring was about right in spite of the course comments with the top
score being 38pts; two players achieved that – Bob Pearce, winner of Div
C and Ed Turner, the runner-up on count back also in Div C.
Greg LeBlanc won the D Division with 37 and Kissy Div A with 36. Div B
was a lot closer with four players all tied up on 35pts and it was left
again the c/b to sort them all out into order with Tony McDonough
heading them from Rod Crosswell, Anton Rowbottam and Barry Copestake
with their respective back nines looking like this: 20, 17, 17, 13 and
Rod beating Anton on the last six, 12 to 8.
Nigel Cannon kindly sponsored four near pins in honour of his birthday
and they were won by Bruce Lamont (4th), Brian Maddox (8th), Tony
McDonough (14th) and Tim Knight (17th).
There were three ‘2’s from Jason Gale (8th), Tony McDonough (14th) and
Dino Binlusimoen (17th).
Div A (0-14)
1st Keith Buchanan (13) 36pts
2nd Stephen Mann (10) 34pts
3rd Mark Rossiter (12) 34pts
4th Rob Guthrie (10) 32pts
Div B (15-17)
1st Tony McDonough (17) 35pts
2nd Rod Crosswell (15) 35pts
3rd Anton Rowbottam (16) 35pts
4th Barry Copestake (15) 35pts
Div C (18-23)
1st Bob Pearce (22) 38pts
2nd Ed Turner (21) 38pts
3rd Howard Marson (19) 36pts
4th Paul Lavender (18) 34pts
Div D (24+)
1st Greg LeBlanc (24) 37pts
2nd Dino Binlusimoen (24) 34pts
3rd Barney Clarkson (26) 34pts
4th Andy Makara (25) 33pts
Tuesday, March 18, Black Mountain - Stableford
On our previous high season tours to Hua Hin,
Black Mountain has been omitted due to the high green fees but what a
mistake that was, which this year, by popular demand was corrected. This
is a fabulous course and it can truly lay claim to being in the top 100
courses in the world. It was in wonderful condition and is a “must-play”
course, when one visits Hua Hin. Perhaps not exactly everyone’s cup of
tea but certainly most of our 56 players would love to come back.

Dino chips back to the
18th at Black Mountain.
Check in at the pro-shop went smoothly
and we teed off on time, the carts were very reasonably priced also at
600 baht and believe it or not, unlike Pattaya courses, the trend here
is to allow walkers!
Bruce Milner was not happy with Imperial Lake View on Monday but he
certainly put that behind him and made up for that today, recording the
best score of the day (40pts) to win Div A by three from one of last
year’s finalists, Murray Hart (37) and the Mann who is always in the
shake up and also one of last year’s finalists, Steve, one further back
on 36, beating Kissy on count back.
Div B went to the very steady Kim Stokes with a great 39pts from Martin
Kingswood (37) and Tony McDonough (36), following up Monday’s excellent
round. Fourth place went to Rod Crosswell.
Personally, I don’t think that playing the blue tees contributed to the
lower scores in Div C & D but they (the scores) were markedly down with
both divisions being won with just 33pts. Greg Hill took the C Div on
c/b from another of last year’s finalists, Howard Marson, with Paul
Lavender grabbing third on c/b from Bob Pearce, who was slightly
disappointed with his 32 but it was just enough to earn him fourth
place.
Div D was won again by Greg LeBlanc (33pts) following up his win Monday
from one of the new Aussie visitors, Dennis Toal with 31, and Nigel
Cannon (30) and welcome back to Geoff Treloar who took the fourth place,
also with 30.
There were eight ‘2’s from Murray Hart, Johannes Murken & Tony Aslett
(3rd), Keith Buchanan, Greg Hill & Barney Clarkson (8th), and Rob
Guthrie & Roger Ellis on the 11th.
Div A (0-14)
1st Bruce Milner (14) 40pts
2nd Murray Hart (14) 37pts
3rd Stephen Mann (10) 36pts
4th Keith Buchanan (13) 36pts
Div B (15-17)
1st Kim Stokes (16) 39pts
2nd Martin Kingswood (15) 37pts
3rd Tony McDonough (17) 36pts
4th Rod Crosswell (15) 34pts
Div C (18-23)
1st Greg Hill (18) 33pts
2nd Howard Marson (19) 33pts
3rd Paul Lavender (18) 32pts
4th Bob Pearce (22) 32pts
Div D (24+)
1st Greg LeBlanc (24) 33pts
2nd Dennis Toal (26) 31pts
3rd Nigel Cannon (27) 30pts
4th Geoff Treloar (28) 30pts
Thursday, March 20, Banyan G.C. – Stableford
After Wednesday’s rest day we had a slightly
earlier tee time of 9.30 for the start at Banyan which I have to say was
not its usual smooth welcoming operation with the golf bags just being
dumped on the floor when we arrived rather than being sorted into carts
in an orderly manner.
The course however is another class act - beautiful fairways and massive
sloping greens, which were made much harder than usual today as they
seemed to lack pace making it very difficult to get the ball to the hole
– even when putting downhill or with the grain.
Two of the four par 3’s are particularly tricky – long uphill hits with
many taking a driver on the 17th which surprisingly gave up two birdies
(to Mark Rossiter and Rod Crosswell). Neil Lavery got the only ‘2’ on
the 4th (the first of the long uphill par 3’s) with the other two ‘2’s
of the day both coming on the short 2nd hole from Eddy Beilby & Reg
Williams.
Rod Crosswell kindly sponsored the near pins with a bottle of whisky
going to each of the winners, who were Reg Williams (2nd), Peter Eriksen
(4th), Geoff Treloar (15th) and Barney Clarkson (17th).
The course played quite short and as a result the scoring was relatively
high with both Suzi and Jack, playing in the first group out, both
scoring 40pts each. Jack won his division (Div C), beating Eddy Beilby
on c/b and Suzi came second in Div D after Barney Clarkson posted the
day’s best score of 43pts to win that division.
Bruce Milner followed up his win at Black Mountain with another here,
scoring 39pts and the Div A title from Maurice Copan (38) and Mark
Rossiter & Neil Lavery both with 37.
The presentation for the all the days was held at Banyan and General
Jack congratulated everybody for turning up on time for their tee times
which always contributes to the smooth running of a tournament of this
size. He also spoke of the Songkhran tournament which will be staged in
Pattaya as the Outback are not going on tour this time – The 3 day
tournament is likely to be held at Burapha (Mon 14th April), Khao Kheow
or Bangpra (Weds 16th April) and Laem Chabang (Thurs 17th April).
Although Bruce Milner had a poor start after only 30pts at Imperial Lake
View, he picked up 79pts at Black Mountain and Banyan to win the overall
by two on 109pts from Keith Buchanan on 107. Steve Mann was in equal
third with Rod Croswell and Greg LeBlanc, all with 106pts, and Barney’s
43pt final round boosted him from 17th place to a tie for 6th.
Div A (0-14)
1st Bruce Milner (14) 39pts
2nd Maurice Copan (14) 38pts
3rd Mark Rossiter (12) 37pts
4th Neil Lavery (12) 37pts
Div B (15-17)
1st Rosco Langoulant (17) 39pts
2nd Rod Crosswell (15) 37pts
3rd Martin Kingswood (15) 37pts
4th John Lawton (17) 35pts
Div C (18-23)
1st Jack Moseley (20) 40pts
2nd Eddy Beilby (18) 40pts
3rd Ed Turner (21) 35pts
4th Brian Maddox (23) 34pts
Div D (24+)
1st Barney Clarkson (26) 43pts
2nd Suzi Lawton (28) 40pts
3rd Reg Williams (25) 39pts
4th Bruce McAdam (27) 37pts

Nick ‘Elvis’ Shaw on song
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society
Sunday, March 16, Green Valley -
Stableford
A Flight
1st Mark Bonner (17) 40pts
2nd Paul Shaw (7) 40pts
3rd Terry Mangan (15) 40pts
B Flight
1st Nick Shaw (19) 44pts
2nd Colin Davis (20) 40pts
3rd Pierre Bietry (18) 37pts
Near Pins: No 4 Freddy Starbeck, No 9 Trevor Gough, No 12 Tom Byrne, No
16 Rune Askdal
Sunday
A Flight winner Mark Bonner.
The performances at customer friendly Green Valley foretold it was to be
a week of outstanding efforts. Perhaps it was due to the drought finally
finding its way to all the golf courses and the firing up of the
fairways, or perhaps it is a result of a winnowing of the competitors to
the battle hardened residents. In any event, one didn’t have to look far
for the “man of the match” as Nick Shaw led the B Flight lad’s home with
a spectacular 44 points.
No one deserved to be disappointed more than the Donkey as his 40 point
return was only good for the second while Pierre ‘the magician’ Bietry
tidied up the flight with a steady 37 points.
In A Flight the action was equally fierce as good mates Mark ‘Taxi’
Bonner, Paul Shaw and Terry ‘pork chop’ Mangan all returned 40 points.
The resulting count back saw Mark take a short cut to the top of the
podium, Paul got to stand on the next rung down as Terry was left with
the bronze.
Tony Glidden, Peter Terry, Peter Henshaw, Trevor Gough and a fantastic
Eagle by Freddy Starbeck on the 18th hole shared the 2’s pot.
Monday, March 17, Silky Oak - Stableford
A Flight
1st Kevin McEntee (7) 41pts
2nd Colin Smith (12) 38pts
B Flight
1st Gerry Roche (23) 39pts
2nd Nick Shaw (19) 37pts
It is no surprise when a quality player wins at Silky Oak, as the course
always demands the best technique to conjure shots from the very tight
fairways into the greens that do not take kindly to shots that are not
struck cleanly and crisply. This again proved to be the case as Kevin
‘you know who’ McEntee used a full bag of clubs to squeeze out a
splendid 41 points and lead the field by two clear shots and show why he
is one of the better proponents of the game.
He was trailed in by two A Flight pals as Colin Smith edged Freddy
Starbeck on count back for the silver, both two shots in arrears
B Flight was secured by Irishman Gerry Roche who fired his best round
for sometime, a splendid 39 points. Nick Shaw meanwhile followed his
stunning Sunday win with a solid 37 points for second.
Terry Mangan slotted home the only ‘2’ of the day.
Tuesday, March 18, Burapha A & B – Stableford
A Flight
1st Freddy Starbeck (13) 40pts
2nd Ian Pickles (14) 38pts
B Flight
1st Nick Shaw (19) 46pts
2nd Jim Elphick (20) 41pts
In an effort to show that Sunday’s 44 points and Monday’s 37 points were
no flukes but rather a trend, ‘Nick Elvis’ Shaw threw a magnificent 46
man of the match points at the field. He also went a couple better than
that by getting two 2’s. Congrats to the red hat player.
Nick’s 46 overshadowed a fine effort by Jimmy ‘two shots’ Elphick whose
41 points would have won B Flight most other weeks.
In A Flight the inform great Dane, Freddy Starbeck, showed he is still
riding a purple patch as he led the lads home with a cracking 40 points.
Ian Pickles rounded out the flight with a solid 38 points.
Colin Smith and Erik Gobert shared the 2’s pot with Nick.
Wednesday, March 19, Green Valley - Stableford
A Flight
1st Terry Mangan (15) 36pts
2nd Colin Smith (12) 35pts
3rd Kevin McEntee (7) 31pts
B Flight
1st Mike Jefferys (18) 37pts
2nd Pierre Bietry (18) 35pts
3rd Gerry Roche (23) 33pts
It has its detractors, but St Andrews provides a marvelous test of golf
and is always in great condition. The society doesn’t play here often,
perhaps not often enough, but a fine field was willing to take on the
challenge on Wednesday.
B Flight was led by Mike ‘the Welsh Wizard’ Jefferys with a man of the
match 37 points. Mike was two clear of Pierre ‘the magician’ Bietry
while Gerry the Irish rover’ Roche rounded out the flight with a count
back decision over Christian Boysen to claim the bronze.
Terry ‘Pork chop’ Mangan once again appeared in the winners’ list
although he could not match his recent rounds, but even par was good for
the top spot in A Flight. Colin Smith made it a second pay window visit
a shot back as Kevin ‘you know who’ took the bronze with 31 points.
Peter Henshaw was the sole heir to the 2’s pot.
Thursday, March 20, Mt. Shadow - Stableford
A Flight
1st Matt Cronin (15) 39pts
2nd Kevin McEntee (7) 36pts
3rd Peter Walker (15) 33pts
B Flight
1st Colin Davis (18) 36pts
2nd Derek Briton (29) 31pts
3rd Martin Allard (23) 30pts
Irishman Matt Cronin, no longer an up- and-comer but rather an
established force with his 15 handicap, was three clear of fellow ‘Mick’
you know who from Co. Offaly. Kevin’s even par round was a further three
clear of Peter Walker in the premier circuit.
The Donkey led the B Flight mob with a solid even par round and Colin
was five strokes clear of Derek Briton. Martin Allard closed the flight
at the expense of Thierry Danzas as both were tied on 30 points.
No ‘2’s were recorded.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya land Soi 1, Beach Rd
Soi13/13 near Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in
and add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport

Miller makes it a double
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC

Howard Stanley and Bryan
Rought get into the St. Patrick’s Day spirit.
Monday, March 17, Khao Kheow –
Stableford
Today was a St. Patrick’s Day game where you had to wear
something green for some extra prizes sponsored by one of our players.
The A and B courses were selected and the cut was made at 7-16 and 18+.
Jim
Connelly.
Playing off 7, Ron Miller won division 1 with 37 points ahead of Chris
Potter in second on 35 and Chris Voller took third after edging a count
back over Lindsay Phillips, both shooting 34 points each; no one likes
to see that.
William Chang is back with us and topped division 2 with 31 points while
three people returned scores of 30; John Walsh was second and Burnie
Sinclair took third, leaving Darryl Blair out in the cold.
Near pins went to Chris Voller (2), Jim Connelly, Tim Hake, Howard
Stanley and Bob Young, while there were no birdie ‘2’s today.
The extra prizes were for the best scores added together on the 1st, 5th
and 8th on the front nine and the 2nd, 5th and 8th on the back nine and
the winner in his last game with us before his return to the U.S. was
Jim Connelly on 16 points, 2 ahead of Darryl Blair and Bob Young in
second and third respectively.
Wednesday, March 19, Pattana – Stableford
Playing the A and B nines today we selected the yellow tees
as 6,876 off the whites seemed a trifle long for the majority of our
players. It was a very warm day here with hardly any breeze at all as we
teed off.
On the podium again and winning the premier division with 40 points was
Ron Miller, six up on second placed Chris Voller who beat Wilf Latham on
a 20/18 back nine count back.
Eiichai Matsumoto won division 2 with 39 points, beating William Chang
by two points and with 35 Tim Hake was in third place.
Near pins were taken by Jerry McCarthy, Ron Miller, Lindsay Phillips,
Dennis Scougal, Kari Aarnio, William Chang, Tim Hake and Eiichai
Matsumoto.
Ron Miller birdied B7 and Chris Voller A8 to split the ‘2’s pot in
division 1 and Eiichai was a happy sole winner in division 2.
Friday, March 21, Eastern Star - Pairs
multiplier/stableford
One of our fun games courtesy of the rollover kitty, an
individual stableford game for two divisions plus a pairs team
multiplier with the divisional cut at 1-16 and 17 plus.
Wilf Latham claimed division 1 spoils with 38 points and Dennis Scougall
took second on 36 while Ron Miller completed the podium with 34.
There were two 36’s in division 2 and with both players scoring 16 on
the back nine Frank Kelly then beat Darryl Blair on a 12/10 back six
count back, while Tony Holehouse finished third after beating Roar
Berger on count back, both coming on 34 points each.
Near pins went to Ron Miller, Dennis Scougall (2), Iain Walsh (2) and
John Walsh.
Harry Vincenzi birdied the 17th to scoop the ‘2’s pot in division 1
while in division 2 there are now four rollovers to Eastern Star next
Friday.
Additional near pin technical prizes were awarded today and these went
to Mike Chatt & Sid Ottaway on Hole 2; Lindsay Phillips & Darryl Blair
on Hole 8; Mikael Andersson & Tom Novak on Hole 11; and Ron Miller & Tim
Hake on Hole 18.
In the team multiplier, 70 points won it for Khalifa Nasser and Frank
Kelly while in second place with 62 were Dennis Scougal and Tim Hake,
beating Darryl Blair and Iain Walsh on count back.

PSC charity golf tourney raises
600-thousand baht for worthy causes

Tournament winners Merle
Humphreys & Colin Smith with PSC Golf Chairman Joe Mooneyham (left).
The 18th edition of the eagerly
awaited annual Pattaya Sports Club Charity Classic Tournament was held
on 21 March 2014 at the Burapha Golf Resort. This event takes weeks of
planning and preparation and the Golf Chairman, Joe Mooneyham, worked
very hard to make this a most successful event which, judging by the
comments of those playing, he succeeded big time.
The competition was a 2-person scramble with prizes on every hole and
also for the top 10 pairs. 2 days after the official announcement the
list was full and Joe had to increase the field from 144 players to 160
and yet there was still a waiting list.

Runners-up – Bob Newell
and Simon Philbrook.
In addition to awards on every hole
there was also a raffle with many prizes which included green fees for 4
people from the EGA golf courses, golf clubs from Pattaya City Golf
including a Taylor Made SLDR Driver, a Taylor Made Burner Driver from
Mick Beresford, 2-ball Putter from Eddie Bielby, 2 bottles of Johnnie
Walker from Tara Pattana International School, 1 dozen Titleist Pro V1x
golf balls from Kyle Roadley and a 60/40 split for the final raffle
ticket drawn. Another great supporter of this event was Chris Balzli of
Sinto Shirts who provided 150 shirts free of charge.

Third place went to Steve
Mulberry & Nigel Flanagan.
Singha Corp came through again with
tremendous support for this event and provided Sanvo Sports energy
drinks to everyone prior to teeing off as well as providing golf bags
and shoes to the winners, plus shirts and umbrellas to the other top 10
winners. They also furnished free drinks during the presentation, which
as you might guess proved to be very popular with everyone. The
presentation was held at the Burapha Clubhouse and was accompanied by a
tremendous buffet.
Mike, the General Manger of Burapha, presented the C & D course in
pristine condition and as President of the EGA also helped to make this
a most outstanding event. In near perfect golfing weather, the overall
scores were very good.

Sponsors banners adorn the
first tee.
Joe thanked all who participated in
today’s tournament with a special thanks to the support of all the
sponsors who included the Platinum sponsors Singha, EGA and Sinto Shirts
and the Gold sponsors Jackalope and Pattaya City Golf.
Individual hole sponsors of the tournament were: The Golf Club; The
Player’s Lounge; Classroom Hotel & Bar; Billabong Golf Bar; Casa Pascal;
YWCA; Lewiinski’s Golf & Restaurant Bar; Jesters Care for Kids; TQ
Master’s; Thomas Cotton; Walter Baechli; Café Kronborg Golfers; Growling
Swan; Phyathai Sriracha Hospital; Pattaya Wine Lover’s; Take It Easy Car
& Bike Rental; Andy Butterworth; Tara Pattana International School; Joe
Kyle; The Perfume House; Ron Robertson; Growling Swan.

Great caddies always add
to the fun of the day.
Joe also thanked Tony Oakes, William
Macey, Jim Bryan and Noi Emmerson for their support in putting out the
banners and helping with the presentation. Also a very big thanks to our
PSC staff and especially Mai, who Joe said he could not have pulled this
off without her help!
The winners of the tournament were the duo of Merle Humphreys & Colin
Smith with a net score of 61.8 off their 6.2 Handicap. In second spot
came Bob Newell and Simon Philbrook (3.2) with a net 62.8, ahead of
third placed Steve Mulberry & Nigel Flanagan (4.6) on net 64.4. Fourth
place went to Robert Morris and Max Scott (3.8), net 65.2 and fifth to
Matt Doyle and Kevin McEntee (3.6), net 65.4.
The remaining five prizes were won in respective order by Dannie Larsen
& Mike Chitwood (10.4), net 65.6; Anders Pedersen & Hans Collett (4.4),
net 65.6; Pentti Lauronen & Reijo Heiskanen (6.6), net 66.4; Jens
Jensson & Hrafnhildur Oskarsdottir (6.6), net 66.4; and Jim Bryan &
Keith Etherington (4.6), net 66.4.
Hole prize winner’s were Willem Lasonder, Colin Smith, Christian Boysen,
Andre Van Dyk, Duangden Butpanya, Ken Price, Yuza, Peter Gullberg, Jim
Elphick, Werner Swartz, Mike Chitwood, Christy Knight, John Jack
Robertson, Orn, Max Scott, Tom Breslin, John Angelillo, Peter Gullberg
and Suphattra Dulkys.

The big cash raffle winner
with PSC President Tony Oakes (right).
Following the presentation to the many
winners, it was time for the raffle with 23 prizes being available. A
total of 38,600 baht was raised from this raffle and then Joe gave
everyone who had not won a prize a voucher for the Breakfast & Lunch
Buffet at Casa Pascal Restaurant.
Joe then again thanked everyone and announced that 600,000 baht was
raised for charity from this wonderful Pattaya Sports Club tournament. A
fantastic result and every baht will be donated to the benefit of those
in need so a big ‘Thank You’ for all those that took part and
contributed.

Beauty on parade at the
prize presentation ceremony.
