Ladies shine brightest at Eastern Star
PSC 123rd Monthly Open Golf Tournament
Usa and Bryan, the winning
combination.
Report: Nigel Cannon/Photos: William Macey.
Golf Chairman Joe Mooneyham decided that the Pattaya Sports Club’s 123rd
monthly golf tournament would be a little bit different. The format was a
2-ball better-ball stableford comp held at Eastern Star on Friday, May 23,
with a shotgun start at 12 noon followed by the presentation and buffet in
the clubhouse.
With pre-payment the registration was quick and many had time for a word
with Joe and Nigel before play began. There were 78 players in total signed
up and all arrived at their allotted tees in time for the hooter to start
the tournament.
The course was in fine condition with speedy greens, and the weather was hot
and sunny – well TIT!
Just a little over 4 hours later the players returned with their cards for
Joe to calculate the results. It became obvious very quickly that the ladies
had enjoyed this form of competition for they were involved in winning many
prizes.
The top duo with 49 points was an unusual pairing of Bryan Neal and Usa
Phaohom, as Bryan’s other half, Ning, was recovering in hospital. Runners-up
with 47 points were the delightful ladies Orn Kanasaengsri and Chop
Daprakhon.
As soon as players had showered, the buffet was available together with
excellent drink service. At presentation time Nigel called order and
introduced Joe Mooneyham who expressed his appreciation to all of today’s
competitors and for the help from Nigel and William and the PSC office
staff. Nigel then announced the winners and Joe presented the prizes. The
lucky draw followed and both names on the card received a prize.
The next PSC monthly is scheduled for Friday June 20th at Pleasant Valley.

Brass Monkey assured
of promotion
Bangkok Casuals League Div. 1 & 2
Paul Frain
Brass Monkey FC, the newest amateur football team in Pattaya, gained
promotion to the Bangkok Casuals League Division 1 with a win over Bangkok
United last weekend.
Brass Monkey are managed by local Rick Bryant, who has won many cups and
league trophies previously with Pattaya City FC. Brass’ last two matches had
seen them give a 5-1 drubbing to United Nations and then a walkover brought
a 3-0 win, which brought them to last Sunday’s showdown with the Japanese
side Bangkok United, with promotion for Brass on the line.
The Bangkok team made Brass’ job a difficult one as they covered the defence
to stop the Pattaya side gaining any clear cut chances and reduced them to
taking long range shots. One such shot from Brass’ Dipita skimmed the United
bar and a few minutes later it was followed by a rasping effort from
Fungkejorn which brought a one handed diving save to keep the score goalless
at half-time.
During the break, manager Bryant changed the team about and his instructions
worked almost immediately as within 3 minutes of the restart Brass forward
Olexandr Keresyuk found a way through the Bangkok defence and he was brought
down by the keeper to earn his team a penalty. Keresyuk took the spot kick
himself and made no mistake to give Brass the lead.
Dipita was then put through on goal but instead of slotting the ball home he
lobbed it over the bar. It was the same player however who put Brass further
ahead with a simple tap in when a centre was not cleared by the Bangkok
defence and he made it 2-0, which turned out to be the final score.
This coming Saturday, May 31, Monkey play United Nations in Bangkok in the
quarter finals of the Bangkok Casuals League Cup, kick-off is at 4-00 p.m.

Sports Bag: Pattaya golf at the crossroads?
Dear Golfnutter
I am writing in response to your recent article titled: “Pattaya – A
Golfer’s Paradise?” published in the Pataya Mail on April 24.
Having been involved in the golf course construction business in Asia for
over 25 years I have seen many different plans and schemes being tested with
various degree of success. You stated in your article that a manager of a
local golf course here has been pushing for compulsory carts on all courses
for some time. His reasoning is that he can’t accept the disparity in golf
revenues between Phuket and Pattaya, and is therefore encouraging his peers
to use carts as one way to increase revenues.
In response to that let me say that if an owner of a golf course applied as
true and honest a business plan to the running of a golf course as he/she
does to any other businesses they own, they would not always be crying about
not making enough money. However, if they applied the same type of logic to
their business that they do to the golf course they own they would quickly
say goodbye to the business. Try telling your customers you are not making
as much as the guy in Phuket on your building supply business so you will be
raising prices as much as 35% and see how long you stay profitable.
I would also like to point out that St. Andrews Golf Course in Rayong has
compulsory carts and it is a very hilly course that simply can become too
slow if walkers are allowed. It is two players sharing a cart. Interestingly
the sister course to St. Andrews, Green Valley does not require carts and if
you choose, it is two players to the cart. Plantation is another very hilly
and tough walking course. If the terrain is extremely difficult it only
makes sense to make carts compulsory and allow two golfers per cart.
Golf however has always been a walking sport. Myself and many of my golfing
friends walk as a form of exercise and I will not play a course that demands
cart use unless the terrain is too difficult as mentioned earlier. As an
idea, how about courses being a bit more creative and going back to the
earlier times in Thailand where carts were run by an outside agency. 25
years ago there were a few courses that let out the golf cart rental
business to outsiders as the owners did not think it was worth the costs to
keep and maintain a large fleet. Today, EZ Go and many of the other
manufacturers are running their own leasing programs so the course owner
does not have to invest large sums. Lease a small number in the beginning
and increase according to demand. Pure choice for everyone!
I would also question the notion you brought up that local golf courses are
banking on Asian tour groups to keep them afloat. In my early days building
golf courses in Thailand around the late 1980s and early 90s, the question
circulating most was who was going to play all these courses when you need
close to 50,000 rounds per year to run a top level course? This comes to
about 35 4-balls per day. Weekends and Holidays this can be done. Weekdays
with a two to three hour drive from BKK made it impossible. The standard
answer was “do you know it is cheaper for a Japanese player to fly to
Thailand and play golf for a week than it would be if he could get on a
course at home”. Fine, I would not argue that, but how many come? Every
course banked on the same persons.
I would say that the recent case of Phoenix Golf Club is another example of
prior and correct planning in any business being an essential requirement.
Rather than deliberately going out to alienate the local farang golfers in
favour of Asian tour groups, I think the new owners just never expected the
total loss of daily play that their actions subsequently brought on. Again,
with proper due diligence and a complete and honest business plan, maybe
many of the problems there could have been averted.
I have been playing three or four different courses around Pattaya since the
Phoenix “crisis” started and except for a few weeks of large Korean groups,
I see no evidence of the Asian influx you describe. Chinese golfers are
around but not yet known as big spenders while the Japanese golfers much
prefer the Bangkok area.
Also I honestly cannot imagine top courses in the area such as Siam, Laem
Chabang and Burapha ever allowing the two to three month Korean invasion of
their courses regardless of green fees. These groups bring their own
teachers, tie up the driving range and practice facilities for hours on end,
demand playing two rounds per day and bring their own food and refreshments.
Top level courses will never allow this to happen. Day trippers yes, long
term groups, no.
Yours faithfully
Bob Neylon

Aarino takes victory at Khao Kheow
PSC golf from Café Kronborg
Monday, May 19, Khao Kheow A & B –
Stableford
1st Kary Aarino (19) 35pts
2nd Gordon Evringham (23) 34pts
3rd Dave Richardson (24) 32pts
4th Gordon Clegg (27) 30pts
We travelled up to Khao Kheow on Monday, May 19 and after a quick
check-in we set off under sunny skies and very hot conditions. The
course was in reasonable shape on the day but there appeared to be a
lack of high-capacity mowing equipment in use as the front nine had very
long grass on the fairways.
The round took us 4 hours and 10 minutes to complete and back in the
clubhouse welcomes went out to the still not retired Gordon Clegg,
Gordon Evringham and Kary Aarino.
We had just the one flight and Kary Aarino was the winner with 35
points, one up on Gordon Evringham in second while Dave Richardson
placed third with 32 and Gordon Clegg completed the podium in fourth on
a count back over Brian Gabe.
Quite the coup for Emmerson
PSC golf from The Golf Club
John Emmerson with Bob Mulholland.

Monday, May 19,
St. Andrews (white tees) – Stableford
1st John Emmerson (12) 38pts
T2nd Wayne Cottenelle (13) 37pts
T2nd Bob Mulholland (9) 37pts
T3rd Darren Zuidema (36) 36pts
T3rd Paul Greenaway (7) 36pts
We had a light week for golf at TGC as Monday was our only comp. Friday was
the day for the Pattaya Sports Club Monthly Members comp, so please see
their write-up for the results. This week’s write-up will be like many of
the girls in this town, short and sweet.
As you are all aware, we usually have Green Valley for our Monday venue, but
today she was closed for the big Singha tournament and Khun Nirand put us
over on St. Andrews, which was a great gesture. We had a good turnout for
the event and pretty good weather as well. The course was in fine condition
and the greens rolled true, even though they had been sanded just 10 days
before.
It was a tight field today and all 5 winners were within 3 shots of each
other. Paul “Take it Easy” Greenaway shot his handicap and shared third
place with Darren Zuidema while Wayne Cottenelle and visiting Scotsman Bob
Mulholland from Glasgow Gailes G.C. shared second. But there was only one
outright winner today, TGC’s very own John Emmerson who piloted his way to
first place, a podium spot he has not occupied for quite some time due to
back problems. Great comeback Johnny! That new bike riding routine is doing
you a world of good.

Jim & Nuan take birthday bash honours
PSC golf from the Outback Golf Bar
A very happy birthday boy Bob, with Rak, Fun & Ning at Burapha.
Monday, May 19, Burapha - Stableford
Thirty-four players came to Burapha to play in Bob Lindborg’s Birthday Better
Ball Bash. Traditionally now, Bob chooses this format, known somewhat
confusingly as 4BBB (four better ball in the UK) or better ball pairs generally.
Electing to play A & B from the white tees, the course was in great condition
and not very busy, so one of the favorite pairings, the two-ball of Steve Mann &
Guy Brennan, were away well ahead of time, with all seventeen teams gone by
9.45.
Bob had chosen by far the best four-ball to play with; he and his partner Fun
were joined by two more caddies from Burapha, Rak and Ning, who all looked
absolutely lovely. Their golf wasn’t too bad either as Bob and Fun returned a
score of 43pts to take sixth place on count back.
Tim, Mark and Phil with their
lovely caddies at Thai Country Club.
Defending champion Nuan, another Burapha caddie, played with
Jim Bryan this year to win again on count back with 47pts from Graham Hiskett
and Stefan Hoge; with the teams of Doug Campbell & David Day and Ivan Plunkett &
Pete Stonebridge taking third and fourth, both on 45pts.
Back at the Outback, Bob had generously provided food; spaghetti bolognaise and
wienerschnitzel, as well as ample Thai food for the caddies, who all came back
to the bar and he also sponsored the near pins which were won by Nuan (A3),
Dennis Pelly (A6) and Bob Finley got both on the back nine, B3 and B8.
After the presentation, the caddies took part in a putting competition on the
Outback 6 holes astro-turf layout, which was won also by Nuan, who finished the
course 2 under par.
All in all, a very good day out and for sure the Outback would like more players
to encourage their regular caddies (or friends of) to play golf in the future.
The better-ball format also proved popular, so much so that the Outback will
stage one tournament a month of this type, alternating between the regular
Monday and Friday courses, Burapha and Green Valley.
1st Jim Bryan & Nuan 47pts
2nd Graham Hiskett & Stefan Hoge 47pts
3rd Doug Campbell & David Day 45pts
4th Ivan Plunkett & Pete Stonebridge 45pts
Wednesday, May 21, Thai Country Club - Stableford
What can one say about this course other than it is true class,
having hosted such tournaments as the Asian Honda Classic in 1997, which was won
by Tiger, as well as the Johnnie Walker Super Tour in 1998 and four time host to
the Volvo Masters from 2005 to 2008.
The course was presented today in great condition with both the greens and
fairways being as good as anything in the Pattaya area, and apart from the
difficulty of actually trying to get to the course, due to the roadworks etc.,
it set up an excellent day out.
This was the first of four very exclusive visits to Thai Country Club, in a deal
that culminates in the final of the Outback’s Race2Bkk here on August 20th, when
as well as the 20 or 24 finalists vying for the 20,000 baht top prize, there
will be other slots available for the normal daily comp.
We elected to play from the shorter white tees (6034 yards) as it was our first
visit, which could be regarded as a sighting round. The scoring was about right,
38pts being the top score which works out at about par after taking the rating
(69.4) and the slope (122) into consideration. However, in discussion afterwards
the general consensus was to play the blues next time.
The excellent turnout of 29 players, who had the benefit of a two-tee start,
were divided into two divisions, the first of which was won by Terry O’Connor on
c/b (last 6) from Mike Gosden, both with 38pts, with J P Maffray in third on 37,
getting there at the last hole with a very fine birdie and welcome to the
Outback all three of you. Steve Mann took fourth place after starting from the
10th and amassing 22pts at the turn but disappointed on the back, with just 14
for a total of 36.
As we returned so late the presentation was held at 7pm, when Henry Wong was
announced the winner of division 2 on c/b from Kim Danboise, again on c/b (last
6) and again both with 38pts, but at the time the cards were only checked
manually. After entering the scores into the computer, the placings were
reversed with Kim being the amended winner. Third place went to Tim Knight,
enjoying his best round for a long time, on 37 and in fourth was Stefan Hofe
(34) who headed three other players on the same score.
There were three ‘2’s from Jack Moseley & Brad Jordison (11th) and Mike Gosden
(16th).
Finally, my thanks to the management at Thai Country Club who have made these
visits possible and we look forward to our next trip here, which is now the
amended date of June 11th.
Div A (0-15)
1st Terry O’Connor (10) 38pts
2nd Mike Gosden (11) 38pts
3rd Jean P Maffray (12) 37pts
4th Stephen Mann (11) 36pts
Div B (16+)
1st Kim Danboise (19) 38pts
2nd Henry Wong (20) 38pts
3rd Tim Knight (27) 37pts
4th Stefan Hoge (18) 34pts
Friday, May 23, Green Valley - Stableford
With Green Valley closed for the Pro Tournament the twenty Outbackers
were moved to St. Andrews. Considering this is their signature course I was very
disappointed with its presentation. I spoke to two Aussie visitors who have
played six courses in the area and they rated this at the bottom of their list.
Three of our guys played in the little publicised Pro-Am that took place on
Wednesday and a great day out with beautiful weather.
Back to our golf at St Andrews and Andy Makara with a great 24 on the front nine
won the 2nd division with 36pts from Aussie visitor Rob Wode (34) and Les Easton
(33), whilst Wally Brown won the top division with 34pts, ahead of Kev Waycott
(33) and Dennis Pelly (32).
There were two ‘2’s from John O’Keefe and Murray Hart.
Div A (0-17)
1st Wally Brown (13) 34pts
2nd Kev Waycott (10) 33pts
3rd Dennis Pelly (12) 32pts
Div B (18+)
1st Andy Makara (25) 36pts
2nd Rob Wode (18) 34pts
3rd Les Easton (23) 33pts

Mitchell at the double
Travellers Rest Golf Group
Ted Senior - winner at Burapha.
Andy Rich
Troubled times once again in Thailand; the last time I had to abide by a
10 p.m. curfew I think I was about fourteen years old. Still life in Pattaya
continues almost as normal and at the moment all is peaceful. The sun still
rises every morning, the tide still ebbs and flows and the TRGG still play golf
competitions three times a week. Long may it last!
Player of the week this week was undoubtedly Phil Mitchell, who of course shares
his name with a famous hard man character in the long running BBC TV series
Eastenders. In previous years whenever Phil won a golf competition with the TRGG
I would make a joke about him threatening all the other competitors if they did
not let him win. This time I promised not to make a joke about him and
Eastenders and he seemed to be pleased. However, when I tried to take his
photograph for the report he said if I did that he would have to ‘fill me in’,
so I didn’t. So you will all have to imagine what Phil looks like.
Monday, May 19, Greenwood A & B - Stableford
On Monday we all made the long trek to Greenwood and it was well
worth it as the course was in magnificent condition.
Phil Mitchell bludgeoned his way (sorry Phil I couldn’t resist) to the top of
the leaderboard shooting an admirable 36 points, the only guy to play to his
handicap. He was followed home by Jim Cleaver a shot behind and Big John
O’Donaghue took third place.
1st Phil Mitchell (7) 36pts
2nd Jim Cleaver (10) 35pts
3rd John O’Donaghue (16) 32pts
Wednesday, May 21, Burapha B & D - Stableford
It was off to Burapha on Wednesday and it is a shame that we can
never manage to play this course in the high season as it is always fully
booked. Many of our regular visitors in January and February may never have
played here which is a great shame as it is a fantastic golf course. Many major
competitions are also played here throughout the year.
Ted Senior is an old hand around Burapha and he made his experience count on
Wednesday by shooting the best score. He was followed home by Mark Ward and Bob
Cannon respectively.
1st Ted Senior (13) 34pts
2nd Mark Ward (19) 33pts
3rd Robert Cannon (17) 31pts
Friday, May 23,
Mt. Shadow - Stableford
Mountain Shadow rounded off another week’s golf on Friday and Phil
Mitchell did it again, winning for the second time and leaving all the rest
quivering in his wake. Ted Senior had a good day to take second place ahead of
another old hand, Fergus Brennan; Father Ted winning on the count back.
1st Phil Mitchell (7) 34pts
2nd Ted Senior (13) 31pts
3rd Fergus Brennan (12) 31pts
Good luck to all you golfers for the coming week and if you would like to play a
round of golf with the TRGG, please phone Fergus Brennan on 086 056 7019 or pop
into the Ned Kelly Bar in Soi Lengkee and add your name to the weekly lists
which are posted on the notice board.

Vincent shoots lifetime best
IPGC golf from The Haven
Vincent Gras, Darryl Kellett and Allen Raaen.
Monday, May 19,
The Emerald – Stableford
CSS 71
1st Vincent Gras (16) 41pts
2nd John Wood (25) 38pts
3rd Darryl Kellett (15) 37pts
4th Trevor Schirmer (15) 37pts
5th Don Everett (19) 33pts
6th John Carlin (17) 33pts
Fine weather and rolling fairways contributed to a very pleasant day’s golf
at this short but tricky Sir Nick Faldo designed course, and with generally
good scores being returned the CSS for the day went down to 71.
Vincent Grass, profiting from a regular diet of golf recently with hardly a
missed day in the week, had the round of his life after having started out
inauspiciously with just fifteen points on an outward nine that included
just two pars. But following a double-bogey ninth hole he suddenly came
alive and swept home with a birdie, seven pars and a bogey for a level par
back nine and twenty six Stableford points. This gave him a lifetime best
return net score and a well deserved win.
Vincent’s wonderful effort meant that John Wood was, for the second time in
two weeks, once again the bridesmaid after looking like the winner. After
nine holes he was five under handicap but finishing with a couple of zeros
on the inward half resulted in a disappointing card, which although a tour
best two under handicap return of 38 points, meant again he had to be
satisfied with just second place.
Continuing the good returns, Darryl Kellett took third place with a one
under handicap score after winning a count back over Trevor Schirmer by a
better 20 to 18, leaving Trevor in fourth.
There was also a count back for fifth place which Don Everett won with a
better 16 to 14 to leave John Carlin in sixth spot.
There were no 2’s in the first division but Don Everett had the sole one in
the second division to sweep the pool.
Wednesday, May 21, Khao Kheow A & B - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Darryl Kellett (15) 38pts
2nd Don Everett (19) 34pts
3rd Markku Tynell (23) 34pts
4th Hal Hart (22) 33pts
5th Vincent Gras (16) 32pts
After just missing out in the previous competition, Darryl Kellett today
went one better in scoring and two steps higher on the podium with a very
tidy round over one of the toughest tests in the area. He started out a
little slowly with a couple of single pointers but he managed to get back to
level by the end of the front nine and a very solid two under handicap back
nine saw him coast away from the following hopefuls to finish four ahead.
Don Everett won a marathon count back for second place over Markku Tynell,
finally getting the nod on the last with a 3 to 1 result having snapped up a
par after they had tied the nine on 17 apiece, the six on 11s, the three on
6s and the last two with 3 each.
Hal Hart took 4th just a shot behind them after showing some semblance of a
return to his form of the now seemingly distant past.
Vincent Gras could not repeat his fantastic round of Monday but did enough
to claim the last spot in the prize list.
Hal Hart had another 2 to sweep the pool in the second division whilst David
Ross did the same in the first division but his effort collected a rollover
to boot.
Friday, May 23, Bangpra - Stableford
CSS 72
Division 1 (0–15)
1st Allen Raaen (8) 40pts
2nd Chris Bonython (8) 37pts
3rd Jon Batty (10) 34pts
Division 2 (16+)
1st Hal Hart (22) 33pts
2nd Markku Tynell (23) 33pts
3rd John Carlin (17) 32pts
Rounding off an excellent week for courses, the group from Soi 13 was
scheduled to take on the very difficult Bangpra course where usually scoring
is at a premium but events scheduled are always well supported. The latter
case proved to be as normal, with two divisions being required but for once
two players left the eighteenth green with the satisfaction of having
overcome at least most of the difficulties to return better than handicap
scores.
In the first division Allen Raaen had by far the best of the day with a four
under handicap return that left him three ahead of his nearest challenger,
Chris Bonython, after they had ended the front nine tied at three under with
twenty one points apiece. It was a win that Allen can write down in his
scrap book, as Chris was once the Australian Amateur Champion and having
also been a runner up on another occasion. It must be said that Chris’s
triumphs were some years ago but remain nevertheless outstanding
achievements to be remembered with some pride, but on this day Allen lasted
the better so Chris had to settle for second place.
Jon Batty took third place with a creditable two over return to leave him
three strokes behind Allen and Chris.
The second division saw some slightly lower scores as the higher
handicappers struggled to come to terms with the difficulties posed by the
course, even though the greens were easier having not been shaved down to
their usual speed.
Hal Hart continued with his golfing rebirth as he took his first win for
several months after winning a count back over Markku Tynell with a better
16 to 15, with John Carlin claiming third another shot back.
Hal’s win was a double triumph after renewing his challenge with Alwyne,
which he celebrated with the traditional Haven Lobster Hawaiian accompanied
by background mutterings regarding winners at three over from the
disgruntled provider of the feast.
There were no 2’s in the second division but Darryl Kellett had the sole one
in the first division.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven group, you can contact
mobile 094 567 5726 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185 Soi 13, between
Beach Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the course is arranged and
you do not need to sign up prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.15
on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on the days that you wish to play. A

Robbins sails home at Navy
PSC golf Bunker Boys @ The Ranch
Tony Robbins.
Monday, May 19, Plutuluang W & N -
Stableford
This was our first visit of the year to the Navy
course because we tend to avoid playing here in high season due to previous bad
experiences with organizational issues when the course is busy. The current low
season green fee price offers good value for money and we elected to play the
West and North courses, which are probably the more challenging of the four
nines here.
The course was surprisingly quiet and the weather was sunny with a gentle
breeze, so conditions were almost perfect to reacquaint ourselves with this
popular venue. Our three groups were able to tee off immediately and the leading
group soon disappeared into the distance with no golfers ahead of them
throughout the round. It was immediately obvious that the course was in
excellent condition and even the usually slow greens were running at reasonable
pace.
Tony Robbins reveled in the conditions to produce his best round for quite some
time, scoring 24 points on the front nine and coming back to the clubhouse with
an unbeatable score of 41 points. Second and third places were decided on a
count back with in-form golfer Thomas Nyborg edging out Geoff Parker.
Tony Robbins completed a fine round by taking three of the near pin prizes with
only Dave Keats preventing him from making a clean sweep of the day’s prizes.
1st Tony Robbins (14) 41pts
2nd Thomas Nyborg (18) 36pts
3rd Geoff Parker (13) 36pts
Near Pins: Dave Keats and Tony Robbins (3)
Wednesday, May 21, Laem Chabang A & B – Stableford
A rare visit for us to this excellent course designed
by Jack Nicklaus, taking advantage of the discounted green fee rate being
offered during May as part of their 25th anniversary celebration.
We elected to play off the blue tees, which with a course distance of 6,578 is
the nearest to our standard distance of 6,500 yards, but this immediately proved
to be tough decision as several players struggled to reach the fairway on the
first hole!
The weather was almost perfect with sunny skies and a freshening breeze, and the
fairways were lush, although the greens showed signs of recent sanding and were
running slower than expected. The course was surprisingly quiet and our three
groups completed the round in double quick time taking full advantage of the
compulsory buggies.
It was always going to be a challenging day’s golf and in the event Thomas
Nyborg was the only player to play to his handicap, recording his fourth win of
the month which gives him a commanding lead in the race for the Golfer of the
Month title. Geoff Cox took second place ahead of Ken Davidson, who was playing
the final game of his visit before returning to the U.K.
Although many players struggled to record a respectable score, everyone agreed
that they thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to play on what is truly a
championship course
1st Thomas Nyborg (18) 36pts
2nd Geoff Cox (15) 35pts
3rd Ken Davidson (21) 31pts
Near Pins: Geoff Cox, Gerry Cooney.
Friday, May 23, Treasure Hill – Stableford
T’was the morning after the military coup and your
scribe sat drinking coffee with Buff at The Ranch, wondering how many intrepid
souls would venture out for a game of golf under martial law, or would they
prefer to stay indoors watching the army version of TV. In the event we
eventually managed to scrape a small group together and headed off up the 331
not really quite knowing what to expect.
We arrived at the course to find there were no tanks in the car park (and hardly
any cars either!) and when we signed in we discovered there were only a total of
seven other golfers on the course ahead of us.
We decided to play off the yellow tees and set off at our leisure in bright
sunny weather, and it was soon apparent that the course was in great condition.
All the recent work on the surrounds of the greens has now fully bedded in and
the greens (bar two which were scruffy), were in good shape. A consequence of
the new surrounds is that several of the greens are significantly smaller than
previous, so what has always been a difficult course is now even more demanding.
With no other golfers in sight we moved at a good pace until we eventually
caught up with a group ahead of us on the 12th hole, but they were so surprised
to see us that they waved us through immediately!
Geoff Parker produced the best score of the day, including a chip-in birdie from
the greenside bunker on the handicap 1 hole, while Thomas Nyborg fell apart on
the final two holes and had to be content with second place.
1st Geoff Parker (13) 34pts
2nd Thomas Nyborg (18) 30pts
3rd Tore Eliassen (17) 28pts
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf society, who now play out
of The Ranch bar on Pattaya 3rd Road (in front of the fire station, and almost
opposite the Buffalo Bar). We play on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, so if

come and join us. We meet at The Ranch at 9 a.m. and new players are always
welcome.

Beaumont bests the field at Greenwood
PSC golf from The Caddyshack
Rick Culley (right) was the
winner at Pattavia.
Monday, May 19, was rescheduled for Silky Oaks as Green
Valley was being prepared for a pro-tournament.
Leading the field was a man on a maple leaf motor cycle, Don Hachey (H/cap
19) with 35 points, beating Bed Findon (20) by two while third place went to
Chris Hart (20) with 32 points.
Graham
Beaumont – 39pts at Greenwood.
On Wednesday we took the trip up 331 to Greenwood, which as usual was in
very good condition. Taking advantage of his inflated handicap was Graham
Beaumont (16) with 39 points for the win. Second place went to the ever
improving Rick Culley (14) on 36 points and in third place again was Chris
Hart (20), this time with 34 points.
Friday’s game took us back up Hwy 331 through the pineapple ocean to
Pattavia Century. Taking a deserved top spot on this day was Rick Culley
(14) with 37 points, beating Ramsay Smith (20) on count back. Third place
went to Jack Butler (15) with 36 points.

Birthday boys lead the way
PSC golf from Siam Country Resort
Jeff Wylie (left) and Neil Harvey (right)
with Willem Lasonder.
Tuesday, May 20, Eastern Star -
Stableford
The purpose of Tuesday’s visit to Eastern Star was twofold,
as the PSC was to hold its monthly tournament there on Friday and a
little bit of a ‘sighter’ always comes in handy for those days. The
course was in good condition, with the greens running true, if perhaps a
little on the firm side.
Jeff Wylie (6) & Neil Harvey (19), who both celebrated their birthdays
in the preceding days, led the way with 34 & 33 points respectively.
Jeff and Neil were also amongst the near pin winners, with Jonathan and
Willem scoring the others.
On return to SCR the golfers had a bit of tucker, courtesy of the
birthday boys, which went down well with a cold drink, or two.
Thursday, may 22, Pleasant Valley - Stableford
Thursday saw us travel up Hwy 7 on our way to Pleasant
Valley, with the course found to be in good condition, although the
greens were considerably slower than Eastern Star’s.
In a repeat of Tuesday’s result it was Jeff and Neil to the fore again
with scores of 39 & 33 respectively. Another year older did not seem to
dampen the boys’ resolve and perhaps they could just continue to improve
in this their 60th year.
Near pins went to Mike, Jeff and Jonathan, with Mike perhaps having hit
the best shot of the 3 being the only one to miss his birdie 2.
As mentioned earlier we had 2 teams at the PSC Monthly, with mixed
results; Jeff and Martin got 3rd spot with 45 points, Martin getting a
good near pin on the 17th in B flight, while Willem and Jim were content
with a lucky draw.
Note: Siam Country Resort, Restaurant & Bar is located just off
Siam Country Club Rd, after going under the arch past the 7/11, turn
right after 50 metres, with the venue on the left another 200 metres
along. Golf from here is generally played on Tuesday & Thursday, with
the Resort hosting prompt presentations on both days.
As a PSC affiliated venue we welcome ALL golfers, including ladies &
seniors (>60s) who have opted for the “Silver” tee option. Call 089 094
1841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers & good
golfing!

Perfect Peter Henshaw
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society
Sunday’s winners Justin Fowlis (left) and
Peter Henshaw (right) with the golf president Christy Knight.
Sunday, May 18, Green Valley -
Stableford
A Flight
1st Justin Fowlis (12) 41pts
2nd Simon Spalding (2) 40pts
3rd Yui Bietry (11) 39pts
B Flight
1st Peter Henshaw (16) 42pts
2nd William Peach (18) 38pts
3rd Jum Karagit (18) 38pts
Near Pins: No 5 Michael Mier, No 8 Simon Spalding, No 12 Ludovic
Henninot, No 16 Eddy Beilby.
Well you didn’t have to wait long for the title guy’s story to emerge -
Peter ‘the silver surfer’ Henshaw was the man of the match with a
excellent 42 points, his back nine total being a mind blowing 24 points
at the society’s home course.
The trailing pair of Sir William Peach esquire and the inform lady
golfer Jum Karagit, both with 38 points, were happy when they walked off
the course, but sad when the B Flight results were announced and it got
worse for Jum as she lost the count back to Sir William.
Top spot in the senior circuit went to Justin Fowlis and his excellent
41 points. Aussie star Simon Spaulding was left only the silver despite
a fine 40 points and a triumvirate of golfers were log jammed on 38
points; Yui Bietry, Aussie boys Simon Spaulding and Nick ‘walk about’
Odnoral and Freddy ‘the quite one’ Starbeck. Yui made off with the
bronze whilst Freddy was explaining his round to the Aussie boys.
Eddy Beilby (a brace), Simon Spaulding, Ludovic Henninot, Andy Kellaher,
Mark Haffendon and Jum Karagit shared the 2’s pot.
Tuesday, May 20, Laem Chabang – Stableford
A Flight
1st Les Cobban (9) 40pts
2nd Michael Mier (7) 38pts
3rd JP Maffray (12) 37pts
B Flight
1st Nick Odnoral (15) 42pts
2nd Colin Davis (17) 39pts
3rd Ludovic Henninot (15) 37pts
C Flight
1st Christy Knight (24) 40pts
2nd Mike Jefferys (18) 36pts
3rd Aiden Murray (19) 33pts
The Lewiinski’s Golf Society moved its Monday to Tuesday to avail itself
of the low season Sports Days at local courses that seem to predominate
on Tuesdays. As has been our tradition in years past, we use the
opportunity to visit the immaculate Laem Chabang layout. All thought the
green fee is well reduced but the buildup of caddy fee and cart still
created sticker shock among the faithful.
42 points was the winning score of the day in B Flight as Nick ‘the
thunder from down under’ Odnoral posted this brilliant total. The Donkey
rattled the pay windows with his 39 points as he was two clear of
Ludovic Henninot.
A Flight had its own 40-pointer, a splendid return from Les Cobban as he
took the flight gold two clear of Michael Mier and another from old mate
JJ Maffray.
Dropping down to C Flight the good scores continued as Irishman Christy
‘good’ Knight did a supposed one in twenty-one rounds as he shot his own
40 points. Christy’s score was hardly out of line with the field as he
was followed in by Mike ‘the Welsh Wizard’ Jefferys with a solid even
par round and Aiden Murray on 33 points.
JP Maffray, Lindsay Semple and Maurice Roberts shared the ‘2’s pot.
Wednesday, May 21, Royal Lakeside – Stableford
1st Tore Eliassen (17) 37pts
2nd Thierry Petrement (13) 35pts
3rd Rod Brown (16) 34pts
Wily Tore Eliaseen was the only player to solve the Royal Lakeside
riddle on the day as he stood alone, the only competitor under par with
37 points. Nice Guy Thierry Petrement showed that he was coming into
form as he snuck into second place on 35 points while Rod Brown and the
Donkey went to a count back as they were locked on 34 points, with Rod
edging the Donkey off the podium steps.
No 2’s were recorded.
Friday, Mau 23,
Mt. Shadow - Stableford
A Flight
1st JP Maffray (12) 36pts
2nd Freddy Starbeck (13) 31pts
B Flight
1st Aiden Murray (19) 33pts
2nd Rod Brown (16) 33pts
The week concluded with a trip to the always tough Mountain Shadow. The
day was hot but breezy and the rain gods were thankfully at peace.
Yet again the scores were poor with just JP Maffray managing to play to
his handicap in the senior circuit. Freddy Starbeck was speechless to
find his 31 points landed him the silver, and if you believe that you
would believe anything.
In B Flight, pay window specialist Aiden Murray emerged from a three-man
logjam on 33 points to find himself top of the heap, while Rod Brown
clung to the silver as Mike ‘the welsh Wizard’ Jefferys was left pot
less at sea level.
Bruce Anderson was the sole heir to the rollover 2’s pot.

Voller rallies late for Hua Hin success
Jomtien golf with the IPGC
(L to R): Wichai Tananusorn, Jimmy
Johnson, Martin Grimoldby and Chris Voller.
This was our annual visit to Hua Hin for an individual competition
over the four days, plus also a combined four round eclectic for the
chance to be crowned the Golden Elephant Tour 2014 champion. 23
players made the trip, most of them traveling down on the Sunday.
Monday, May 19,
The Majestic – Stableford
Everyone made it to Hua Hin on time so 23 players out
today with an equal cut in the two divisions of 6-15 and 17+.
The course was in very good condition and everyone enjoyed playing
here, none more so than Lindsay Phillips, playing off 14, who scored
24 points on the front nine and 21 on the back for a remarkable 45
to win division 1. Chuck Anderson came in second on 38 and Chris
Voller took third with 37.
Jimmy Johnson returned 37 points to win division 2, two ahead of
Marty Aronson in second while Roger DeJongh placed third on 33.
Lindsay Phillips birdied the 6th and 12th and Pete Sumner the 6th to
share the division 1 ‘2’s pot while Burnie Sinclair had it all to
himself in the second tier.
Near pins went to Martin Grimoldby, Lindsay Phillips (3), Alan
Bissell, Rod Howett, Andy Oz and Burnie Sinclair.
Tuesday, May 20, Sea Pines - Stableford
Sea Pines was only a 15-minute drive down the road from
our Thipurai Hotel in Hua Hin and we arrived to an almost deserted
course. It was a very windy day here on the coast and yet again the
course was found to be in fine condition; this was voted in by the
players rather than Palm Hills or Springfield due to the conditions
of those other 2 courses.
Alan Bissell recorded the best score of the day, winning division 2
with 38 points while Adrian Shelley, alias Andy Oz, was second on 35
and Jimmy Johnson beat Burnie Sinclair 16/15 on a back nine count
back for third after both came in with 31 points each.
Kevin Blake topped the podium in division 1, beating Martin
Grimoldby 18/13 on the back nine after both finished on 36 points,
and Russell Gilroy placed third one point behind.
There were no ‘2’s today in either division so rollovers to Black
Mountain on Thursday.
Near pins were claimed by Grenville Hill, Pete Sumner, Wichai
Tananusorn, Chris Voller, Alan Bissell, Andy Oz, Paul Renall and
Burnie Sinclair.
Thursday, May 22, Black Mountain - Stableford
Probably everyone’s favourite course here in Hua Hin and
the condition was the best we have ever seen; everything was
immaculate and picturesque, good prices, good caddies and the
clubhouse and the staff in the restaurant unbeatable.
39 points was the best score of the day, recorded by Joe McArdle to
win division 1 ahead of Chris Voller in second on 37 and Martin
Grimoldby beat Wichai 18/17 on count back for third after they both
came in with 36 points each.
Guy Russell was the winner in division 2 with 37 points, with Jimmy
Johnson one point behind in second and Frank McGowan claimed third
with 35.
Grant Cadell birdied the 14th and Burnie Sinclair the 3rd to share
the rollover ‘2’s pot.
Near pins went to Kevin Blake, Grant Cadell, Pete Sumner, Wichai,
Paul Renall, Guy Russell and Burnie Sinclair (2).
So after three rounds, Martin Grimoldby and Chris Voller shared the
overall lead on 108 points, with Lindsay Phillips and Jimmy Johnson
hot on their heels with 106 and 104 points respectively.
Friday, May 23, The Banyan Tree - Stableford
Another course in superb condition with most commenting
afterwards that Banyan is more of a thinking player’s layout than
Black Mountain. The only slight downside was the cost of the buggy,
the caddy and the prices in the restaurant afterwards, but it was
still enjoyable.
Our first three rounds had been rain free but today at the Banyan
the clouds thickened and after playing 14 holes the rain, lightning
and thunder started. Fortunately it only lasted 20 minutes and the
drainage here is very good so after a short stop at the tea station
the group resumed with no further problems.
After 22 points at Black Mountain on Thursday, Alan Bissell was back
in the limelight today, winning division 2 with a fine 41 points.
Jimmy Johnson came in second with 37 and Roger DeJongh completed the
podium in third with 36.
Saving his best game for the last round, Chris Voller topped
division 1 standings with 39 points, four ahead of Declan Kelly in
second while Wichai Tananusorn placed third after beating Martin
Grimoldby and Grenville Hill 17/15/14 on the back nine, all on 33
points.
Chuck Anderson birdied the 15th and Alan Bissell the 17th to claim
the ‘2’s prizes.
Near pin awards went to Chuck Anderson, Russell Gilroy, Chris Voller
(2), Alan Bissell and Alec Hoare (2).
So, after his fine last round, the overall winner of the Golden
Elephant Tour after four days was Chris Voller on 147 points, six
ahead of second placed Jimmy Johnson while Martin Grimoldby and
Wichai Tananusorn placed third and fourth on 141 and 138
respectively.

Cooper’s top mark
The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC) at the Elephant Bar
The Pattaya Golf Society began the new
week in fine style with a visit to Greenwood on Monday, May
19, to play a stableford competition on the A and B nines,
which were in excellent condition. This course must surely
rank as one of the best played by Pattaya golfers at the
moment and the “vfm” is unbeatable.
On virtually an empty layout the group set off in hot humid
conditions and good scores were slow to emerge but
eventually the leaderboard took shape, with Alan Flynn,
Akifumi Tate and Mike King all posting 32 points for a share
of third place. One ahead was newest member Ken Lambert and
his 33 points set down his mark for the future. The best
round of the day was recorded by Mark Cooper, his winning
score of 36 points matching the winning scores with the
group on the last three visits to the course.
Garry Hookey revelled in the day’s only birdie ‘2’, on the
testing B2. Jesper Hansen gleefully accepted the bar’s
consolation beer and the Booby Bevy went to Greg McDonald
after his debut competition saw him have a “mare” of a
round. However, good or bad, there are never really losers
at Greenwood
Monday’s man
on a roll
There is nothing better than a golf day out at
Khao Kheow and on Wednesday, May 21 the Pattaya Golf Society
did just that. Another group of twenty-something visited the
course to play a stableford competition on the A and B nines
which were in excellent order.
The course was quite popular but the group made good
progress and some creditable scores were recorded. Sharing
second place were Ken Lambert and Yasuo Suzuki with 38
points, which gave Yasuo good memories of his final round
this trip. The winner for the second successive event was
mark Cooper and his 39 points was made with fantastic back
nine of 23 points!
There was only one birdie ‘2’ and Mr Len was beside himself
with excitement as his second looked ominously close to an
ace on the island green. The bar’s consolation beer went to
Willie Barbour and Mr Len took the Booby Bevy for his 37
points which gave him nothing as a reward. “Something for
the weekend, sir?” Yes, a handicap cut! Golfers can always
find some fun at Khao Kheow.

Gabe fares best
at tough St. Andrews
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
Brian Gabe & Jim Ferris.
Derek Brook
Tuesday, May 20, St. Andrews – Stableford
The plan was to play Green Valley today, and that is what we
booked until the course came back and told us they had a tournament on
that date, but we could play St Andrews at the same rate if we chose, so
we decided to go for it.
Now normally we would not play this course as it is a really difficult
one and many of our players like to walk, but here you have to take a
cart. Believe me you really need one as well, either that or a pack
horse.
Once signed in the cavalcade begins as we went up to the start of the 18
holes. You start with a downhill drive here, golf drive that is, to a
raised green and as you make your way around you can see why players
with a handicap over 18 handicap are advised to think twice before
playing it.
I remember some years ago when we used to play St. Andrews regularly
that one of our players described it as the ‘Goat Track’. The players on
this day were a little more complimentary, but I suspect most would
rather have played Green Valley.
The wind got us most of the way around and we struggled at times. This
is actually a good test, the fairways are quite well grassed but the
rough is so penal that the ‘Local Rules’ say that it should be classed
as a ‘Hazard’, so it gives you some idea of the surrounding area. Then
there is the water, now filled with my golf balls!
Back in Bert’s it was soon time for the results and the winner on the
day was Brian Gabe with 37 points, a really fine round on this course.
In second was Jim Ferris with 36 points ahead of Max Scott in third on
35 and Henry Wong fourth with 33.
Near pins went to Daryl Evans and Mike Gerrard (3).

Gerd & Seesa shine at Eastern Star
PSC golf from The Growling Swan
Seesa Phompinmon, Niall Stuart & Gerd Riedler.
Peter Blackburn
Monday, May 19, Eastern Star – Stableford
There was a healthy field of 21 signed up for the first
game of the week and we gathered at The Growling Swan prior to our
departure to the Eastern Star Golf Course.
We welcomed Jerry Dobbs, back for a couple of weeks from his work in
Gladstone, Queensland and also Kurt-Eric Persson & his lady Seesa
back for another game with us. Once again it was time to say goodbye
to David “Fletch” Fletcher who will shortly be returning to work in
Western Australia.
All were early so we left the GS 5 minutes ahead of schedule at 8.25
am and arrived at the course 45 minutes later. It was fairly quiet
so we had time to relax and prepare and our first four-ball teed off
15 minutes before our allotted time of 10.00 am.
Rosco Langoulant, John Davis. Andrew
Allen & Dick Braimbridge. It was a lovely day, not too hot with a gentle breeze and the golf
course was in very good “nick” with the greens receptive and true.
We set a fairly good pace and as the breeze got a bit stronger it
made playing conditions quite comfortable and we completed our very
enjoyable round in four hours & fifteen minutes.
Playing some excellent golf recently was one of my playing partners,
Gerd Riedler, and his fine 41 points was good enough for first place
in A Division, with Kevin “Wayco” Waycott hot on his heels in second
place on 40 points and Takeshi Hakozaki taking third with 39.
Division B was won by Seesa Phompinmon who had 35 points and Dick
“The Reverend” Braimbridge came second just one point further back.
There were 2 golfers with 33 points and the count back resulted in
third place going to Gary Williams (18 point back nine) with Nolan
“Notso” Wise (16 point back nine) just missing out.
The Growling Swan NAGA Award for the lowest score on the day went to
Niall Stuart
Division A (0-15)

2nd Kevin Waycott (10) 40pts

Thursday, May 22, Burapha – 4-Person Scramble
It was the time for our monthly “novelty” game and the
format this time was a 4 person scramble with a random draw,
matching 2 low handicappers & 2 high handicappers together in each
group. We had 20 golfers eager to participate which was perfect as
it gave us 5 teams and we assembled at The Growling Swan in
readiness for our departure to the classy Burapha Golf & Country
Club.
We welcomed Rosco Langoulant and also Andrew Purdie, formerly from
Queensland but now a Pattaya Resident. Leaving the GS 5 minutes
early at 8.25 am we arrived at the course 35 minutes later and had
plenty of time to do the random draw and have a chip and a putt.
B & D nines was the designated combination on the day and we got our
first group away in lovely weather conditions with a gentle breeze.
The golf course was, as usual, in perfect condition with lush
fairways and magnificently prepared greens and with only light
“traffic” ahead of us we were able to maintain a steady pace and as
is expected with a 4 person scramble we completed the round in just
a couple of minutes over four hours. It had been an excellent day
with very good company.
As it was a 4 person scramble with just 5 teams competing there were
awards for first & second placed teams. There were also rewards for
nearest the pin on the four par 3’s and longest first putts on the
A9 & C9 greens.
The winning team was Rosco Langoulant, John Davis, Andrew Allen &
Dick Brainbridge with a net score of 60.5 and the runners up were
Andrew Purdie, Bill Steinman, Peter Grey & Jerry Dobbs with a net
score of 61.2.
1st Rosco Langoulant, John Davis, Andrew Allen & Dick Braimbridge
(9.5) net 60.5
2nd Andrew Purdie, Bill Steinman, Peter Grey & Jerry Dobbs (7.8) net
61.2
Near Pins: B3 – John O’Donoghue, B8 – Sandy Leiper, D2 – Geri
Crilly, D8 – Andrew Allen
Long Putts: B9 – Sandy Leiper, D9 – Russell Calcutt
Note: Growling Swan Golf welcomes golfers of any persuasion –

Wild bags the win at Pattana
PSC golf from the Billabong Golf Bar
Rosco Langoulant, Kevin Wild and Owen
Walkley
Monday, May 19, Pattana - Stableford
With three groups playing it was a drive up a very congested
331 to Pattana. We all got there and were teeing off right on time,
playing the A and C loops off the yellow tees, which was still a
challenge at just over 6300 yards.
It was Sports Day here so there were a few golfers out there but apart
from it being extremely hot we just flowed around in just over four
hours. The course was in good condition apart from some of the greens
which were in very poor shape. This didn’t affect Capt Bob on the first
hole however as he never saw that green at all, being force to pick up
his ball before he got there as he ran out of shots.
Kevin Wild won the day with 34 points, finishing one ahead of Rosco
Langoulant in second while third place went to Owen Walkley on 31, just
edging out Capt Bob on count back.
There were two ‘2’s recorded, by Kevin Wild and Neil Carter.
Wednesday, May 21, St. Andrews - Stableford
St Andrews today as Green valley was closed for a
professional tournament, and whilst it’s always a pleasure to play this
course the greens were not very good to putt on as they had just been
cored and sanded, which made it a tough day out.
Barney Clarkson and Wayne Cotterell.
Last time we played here the scores were in the mid forties but that
changed today with no scores anywhere near that high. There was a
four-way count on 37 points at the top of the leaderboard that saw Rosco
Langoulant take the day’s honours ahead of Capt Bob in second, Owen
Walkley third and Auke in fourth.
There was only one ‘2’ today, coming from Capt Bob.
Friday, May 23, Treasure Hill - Stableford
We played Treasure Hill today for the first time in months.
The course was in great condition but as usual it didn’t take any
prisoners. It seems all the work done in previous months has paid off
and it was a pleasure to play here. The greens were true and fast and
although it was a hot day everyone enjoyed the challenge.
The scores were a real mixed-bag, ranging from a lowly 16 points up to a
magnificent high of 33. Barney Clarkson was the owner of that high
score, taking the top spot ahead of Wayne Cotterell on count back, while
Owen Walkley placed third with 30.
There were no ‘2’s, which is not surprising as there are no easy par
three greens at this course.
Note: The Billabong in situated just off Siam Country Club Road
looking straight down Lake Mabprachan. Give Bob a call on 082 204 3411
if you are looking for a game.
