Pattaya to get a new darts league

Pattaya Sports Club is organising a new Darts League playing on Monday evenings, so as not to impair the leagues run by bars on other nights. Currently these leagues are funded by the bars to attract customers and supply a facility for both residents and visiting tourists. In the main they are well run and commercially successful.

The first night of play for the new league will be Monday the 1st of March for those teams ready to play by then. The inaugural meeting of team captains will be held at the PSC office or the Cafe Kronborg next door at 3 p.m. on Saturday the 27th of February.

The primary purpose of the Pattaya Sports Club Darts League is to promote the sport and make an enjoyable evening out for PSC members and their friends. To this end the venues of the teams will not need to fund the events; instead the team members will pay a small sum each match to their captain who will pass it on, together with result sheets, to the PSC Darts Section. From there, the news will flow to the Pattaya Mail and the money will flow to a special Darts Section interest-bearing deposit with the PSC until needed for trophies, etc.

The Pattaya Sports Club will cover any shortfall in initial income in order to get the sport on its feet and in a position to cope with international and local tournaments, as it has done for 10 Pin Bowling, Softball, Fishing and especially for Golf.

The PSC is now a legal Thai entity, and as such is audited yearly by a Thai government department to ensure that an organization, the bulk of whose membership is Farang, operates in accordance with Thai laws and its own articles of association. The main expenditure of the PSC is in supporting local charities on the Eastern Seaboard. These charities include so much support to Thai poor people and to the good people helping out the unfortunate, that the members of the PSC are effectively helping the local community simply by paying their membership.

Members of the PSC who can arrange a team with a minimum of 4 players, 2 of whom must be PSC members; venues which are prepared to host a team and members who simply enjoy playing darts and are looking for a team should contact Len Banfield, Darts Chairman on (38) 420-432.

Dolphins filet Marlins

The weekly Pattaya Sports Club softball game on Sunday, January 31 had David’s Dolphins and Mike’s marlins do battle like a pair of Siamese Fighting Fish. In the end, the Dolphins were able to sink the Marlins and swim away with the victory in both ends of the doubleheader.

The opener saw the Marlins leap out of the water and score two in the first and four in the second behind the timely hitting of Montreal (The Rocket) Robert and Craig (Netman) Lewis.

The bottom of the second brought the Dolphins to the surface and RBI by Esso Mike and Consistent Chris brought four runs home.

The Marlins failed to score in the top of the third, but in the bottom half of the inning Maple Leaf Rick had a two run homer and with two outs and two on added a three run homer as the Dolphins scored nine in all.

Mike (Mr. Ice) Berg had a three run dinger for the Marlins in the top of the fourth to cut into the lead, but G’Day David smacked a two run blast in the bottom half of the inning as the Marlins floundered and the Dolphins hung on for a seventeen to fifteen victory.

The nightcap began as a defensive struggle with each team putting up one in the first.

The Dolphins’ Copasetic Curt made several nice catches in right field to hold the Marlins scoreless over the next three innings, while the Dolphins padded their lead.

Down 8 to 2 in the bottom of the sixth, the Marlins loaded the bases and quickly cut the lead to two behind Alan (Y. B.) Baa’s grand slam.

After a nifty defensive play by John (Baypoint) Bechtel at first, the Dolphins failed to score in the top of the seventh.

Timely RBI by Alan (Leaving) Vegas and C. F. (Fowl Ball) Macallen tied the score in the bottom of the inning and sent the game into extra innings, where the Dolphins, behind Sterling (Silver) Bechtel’s four RBI, quickly scored eight big runs.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Marlins put their first two batters on, but when Kiwi Rick made an over the shoulder, running "catch of the day", the Marlin runners were caught off base, ending the game with a triple play!

Games are every Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Pattaya School #7 on Sukhumvit Road just past Greenway driving range and Caltex gas station. Equipment is provided and refreshments are available. All are welcome.

Bevington on a hot streak

PSC TAGGS ...golf from the Hare House

Wednesday, February 3 - Phoenix Golf & Country Club (Stroke Play)

1st: Rick Bevington, net 66
2nd: Brent Philp, net 72
3rd: Michael Dige, net 72

The Alternative Golf Gentlemen’s Society played their Stroke Play competition on the Lakes and Mountain courses at Phoenix on Wednesday. The conditions were almost ideal, with a light breeze and heavy clouds keeping down the heat. The good weather produced a bevy of good scores, but Canadian Rick Bevington ran away with the tournament carding a net 66 off his 35 handicap.

In second place was another Canadian Brent Philp, who shot an even par 86 off his 14 handicap. The best gross of the day was Michael Dige with a 77. Playing off five, Michael took third place.

Friday, February 5 - Rayong Green Valley Country Club (Stableford)

1st: Rick Bevington, 41 points
2nd: Peder Gjelstrub, 39 points
3rd: Bill Thompson, 38 points

Canadian Rick Bevington won his second TAGGS competition in two days when he captured 41 Stableford points at Green Valley on Friday, February 5. Rick, who spends the winter in Pattaya every year , has been on a tear with four wins and a second in the past month. He credits PGA pro Richard Livingston for the improvement in his game. "He changed my grip to eliminate the banana ball," Rick declared. Gee Richard, couldn’t you have waited a while to make those changes?

In second place with 39 points was the affable Dane Peder Gjelstrub. Peder was singing the blues on Wednesday at Phoenix. But on Friday at Green Valley he put it all together and nearly won his first Hare House trophy.

In third place was Bill Thompson who shot an 87 that was good for 38 points. Maybe this round will get Bill’s handicap below 15 before Russell Finch gets back from the States. Bill doesn’t want to suffer the ignominy of having a higher handicap than ol’ "Pin High".

High drama at Laem Chabang

PSC Pattaya Golf Society from The Bunker

On a beautifully manicured course, the Pattaya Golf Society played their match play semi-finals on Tuesday, February 2nd in perfect golfing conditions at Laem Chabang.

Neil Hughes, a very competent golfer on his day, played off a 15 handicap and had to concede 8 shots to his opponent, veteran Colin Morgan. Neil had the fright of his life being down 3 holes after the first four.

Yet after his disastrous start, Neil got his act together and at the turn was one in front, whittling away Colin’s lead with some monumental tee shots and good short play.

Colin realised by the 14th his chances of qualifying were disappearing and with only 4 holes left, with all his extra shots used up, that Neil was too good a player to let this chance slip by to win the game. Neil ended up winning by 2 holes. Certainly, if Neil maintains his form he is going to be a very difficult contender for the eventual honors.

The other semi-final was a dogged game between another veteran, Bill Jones, and Wilf Latham, another big hitter off the tee. Bill stuck to his task and never lost sight of Wilf, perhaps only on several fairways where Wilf’s balls strayed occasionally. Never more than a few holes separated them all through the contest.

Wilf found himself in some tricky situations off the fairways with his long drives, but always played excellent relief shots to keep himself in contention. It was obvious with this dual the first big blunder would be fatal, but both players kept their cool, and at the finish honors were shared.

Bill Jones was quoted as saying, "I’m not particularly keen on these match play tournaments - too much strain and stress involved." But Bill has to go through it all again just one day before the final next Tuesday. No one can guess the other finalist, but whoever, will give Neil Hughes a very stiff test for the nomination of Pattaya Golf Society’s Match Play Champion of 1999.

The game played also embodied a Stableford competition for the Society with the eventual winner, with 35 points and a return to form, Dickie Barbe. Dickie’s absence of recent months seems to have re-kindled his appetite for the game again.

Second place went to Ger Hazke, another regular in-form player constantly amongst the prizes. Bo, a quiet, unassuming member who’s also playing good golf, shared the spoils.

The Bunker’s other activities also include darts, a quiz team (of sorts), and the catering services of waitresses Ong, Lek, Kub and Porn. There is also a good menu of all English dishes available.

There’s a reward to anyone who can give any information to Wilf Latham leading to the person who hid his sports bag. Wilf replaced this bag with a 950 baht bag much to his annoyance. "Should have gone to Naklua Sunday Market," one member was heard to comment. "Could have saved 500 B."
