Poteen Still lands PSC Fish of the Month

Tuesday March 2nd 1999, the Poteen Still fishing team, fishing out of Bang Saray, hooked and landed a 185 kilogram Shovelnose Ray. Landing this huge fish turned out to be quite a feat. Soon after the fish was hooked, the fishing rod handle was broken off just below the reel. To overcome this handicap, one of the team put the fishing rod over his shoulder and against his back, while another one of the team operated the reel. Once again the situation was fish against man. The fight lasted three and one half hours. Eventually, it took five men to bring the huge fish on board the boat.

While the fishing team struggled with the huge Shovelnose Ray, they hooked a large Black Marlin on one of the other fishing rods. Unfortunately, after a few minutes, during all the work and confusion, the large Marlin managed to throw the hook and escape.

s1.jpg (38958 bytes)It took a total team effort from team Poteen Still to land this 185 kilogram Shovelnose Ray.

Included in the Poteen Still fishing team were Johan Donleben, Ferry Brandes, Eric VanDerVen and Toon Leyten, all from Holland, and Gunnar Molgard from Denmark, and Frank Collins from the Poteen Still. The boat captain was Captain Ting from Bang Saray. The fish was hooked off the island of Koh Khrum in the early afternoon.

The next PSC Sunday Fishing Tournament is March 14

There is one tournament scheduled each month from January through November, and the end of the year PSC Presidents Cup Tournament is scheduled in December.

To qualify for the PSC sponsored Presidents Cup Tournament, each participant must first participate in at least one fishing tournament promoted by the PSC during the year, and be a current member of the Pattaya Sports Club.

Each boat entered pays an entry fee of 600 Baht to the Pattaya Sports Club.

Entrance fee must be paid the day before the tournament starts, listing name of boat captain and names of fishermen entered.

Each team hires their own boat. No limit on number of fishing men or fishing women on board.

Horrow Show

The lupine Werewolves and the garlic phobic Vampires scared up the action at the weekly Pattaya Sports Club softball game on Sunday, March 14. As the sunlight faded and the players prepared for their nefarious nocturnal activities, each team managed to reap their pound of flesh, as they split the doubleheader.

The opener saw the Werewolves pounce from their den and put up three in the first and four in the second behind the hard hitting of Slammin Sammy and M. J. (Coffee) Jim.

The Vampires nibbled away at the lead, scoring one in the first and second, two in the third and one in the fourth with Dick (The Stick) Cagg, Craig (Hitman) Lewis, and Serve and Folly Peter each collecting RBI.

The Vampires pushed two across in the bottom of the fifth to tie the score.

The Wolves, having been held scoreless for three innings, again took the lead on hits from Mark (The) Natural and Seminole Joe, to go up by two.

The Vampires had no cross to bear and put up two of their own thanks to Montreal (Uppa US) Robert and Kiwi Rick to knot it up at nine apiece.

As the game proceeded into extra innings, the pitching toughened, the defense stiffened, and the scoreboard filled with goose eggs.

Finally, in the top of the eleventh, the Werewolves bared their fangs and hits by Frank (Nitty) Gritty, Gordon Lightfoot and Esso Mike brought home three ending the contest twelve to nine.

The nightcap awakened the Vampires as homers by C. F. (Fowl Ball) Macallen and G’day David put them up six to three after three.

Adding one in the fifth and four in the seventh, while shutting out the now rather lethargic Werewolves, earned the Vampires an eleven to three triumph.

You don’t have to be out for blood (although it helps) to enjoy PSC softball. Games are every Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Pattaya School #7 on Sukhumvit Rd. just past Greenway driving range and Caltex gas station. Equipment is provided and refreshments are available. All are welcome.

The Pattaya Sports Club helps out at the Chum Chon Wat Khao Maigaow School

s3.jpg (28068 bytes)Staff and students thanking Harry Riley (Charity Chairman) on behalf of all the Pattaya Sports Club members for their generous help.

Another of the PSC’s self help food projects, this school now has a plentiful supply of mushrooms to feed their students. The pics show what used to be an old chicken roost now transformed into a fully stocked mushroom growing hut. This is due to the very hard work from the staff and students and some financial aid from the Pattaya Sports Club.

Beard, Gingerich and McBurney to TAGGS

PSC TAGGS... golf from the Hare House

Wednesday, March 10 - Eastern Star Resort Country Club (Pairs Medal)

1st: Stephen Beard & Tom Gingerich, 64 net
2nd: Arthur Hancock & Harry Riley, 68 net
3rd: Vic Cross & John Kendall, 69 net

The Alternative Golf Gentlemen’s Society joined the parade of golf groups that have lately been traveling down to Banchang to play Eastern Star. For some playing out of the Hare House it was their first visit to this long and difficult course. Measuring 6600 yards off the white tees, and with enough water to solve most of Thailand’s drought problems, Eastern Star is tough. It would take a team that had played many rounds of golf together, melding their skills to a fine edge, in order to tame this monster. Right!

American Tom Gingerich, who had never before played Eastern Star, paired up with Englishman Stephen Beard. The duo had never played a round of golf together. When Tom walked into the Hare House on Wednesday morning and said he didn’t have a partner, Steve said, "No problem, you’re playing with me." This first time match up proved to be an unbeatable combination. Between them they shot a net 64 and won the TAGGS Pairs Medal on Wednesday, March 10, by four strokes.

In second place with a net 68 was the All-England side of Arthur Hancock and Harry Riley. They beat out the All-American side of Vic Cross and John Kendall by one stroke.

Friday, March 12 - Rayong Green Valley Country Club (Stableford)

1st: Dave McBurney, 37 points
2nd: Stephen Beard, 36 points
3rd: Lou Naftalin, 35 points

With Gary Baxter in the field, playing the same Green Valley course on which he won the Splinter Group Open the week before, the smart money was picking the Canadian to win the Hare House’s weekly Stableford competition on Friday, March 12. Well, a Canadian won, but it was "Diver Dave" McBurney who took home the Red Eyed Rabbit trophy that goes with a Stableford win. The ex-professional hockey player kept his southpaw slice in check and shot a gross 91 off his 20 handicap for a solid 37 Stableford points. Dave skated home to victory with a natural birdie on the Par 5 seventeenth hole, which was good for four points.

In second place with 36 points, and making his third straight appearance on the podium was TAGGS Chairman Stephen Beard. Stephen has watched his handicap drop three strokes since Christmas and has been the most consistent golfer out of the Hare House so far in 1999.

In third place with 35 points and making his first appearance on the leader board, was Lou Naftalin. Lou, who plays off nine, had a sluggish start and shot a 45 on the front nine. But he played a brilliant back nine and shot a gross 37 to snatch a free green fee to Green Valley.

A Blackly blast at Eastern Star

PSC Pattaya Golf Society from the Bunker

The venue for the Golf Society’s Tuesday Stableford meeting was Eastern Star.

Generally the fairways were in poor condition with many areas devoid of grass and it proved a tough test for most of the entry. But certainly not for all.

In Division One, Roy "Tiger" Mitchell was initially declared the winner with 37 points. However, it was then pointed out that Roy had used another player’s club on one hole during the round.

Controversy was the order of the day, but it was eventually decided that Roy be penalized 2 points and as a result he was placed runner-up.

The winner, fresh from triumphing in a two man scramble the day before with Cafe Kronborg, was again Bill Jones with 36 points. Since his recent retirement Bill is certainly showing a revised prowess on the golf course.

In Division Two, ex Chelsea footballer Arthur Blackly broke par for the first time and won his first competition with a resounding 42 points. Arthur has only just returned to Pattaya and this was his first game for some six months. A most impressive performance and it seems obvious his intensive three month coaching at one of Florida’s top golf schools has proved to be money well spent.

Now that Tiger Woods has parted company with "Fluff" Cowan, it could well be that he is looking for a new client. Perhaps Arthur may give him a chance.

Another first timer on the leader board was Aussie Clive Edwards who came second with 35 points.

Nearest the pin winners were Bill Jones (again) and Anders Karlsson.
