Royal Garden to host festival yachting
by Peter Cummins
The strand of Pattaya Beach in front of the Royal Garden Resorts will
be the location of the yachting action on Saturday, 17 April, scheduled to be part of this
years Pattaya Festival to be held from 12 - 19 April.
In order to bring the colour and excitement of yachting closer to the
people, the Royal Varuna Yacht Club has agreed with the Mayors office to have a race
from the Royal Varuna facilities at Pattaya Point, Kasetsin Beach, to finish on the beach
in front of the Royal Garden.

Yacht racing, due to the necessity of holding races some way off-shore,
has always been a rather vague - albeit spectacular - form of sport to the average person.
Now, as a highlight of this years Festival, some 20 - 30 craft
from the Royal Varuna will "come to the people", with an anticipated finishing
time around 14.00 hours, Saturday the 17th. Thereafter, the boats - mainly catamarans with
their multi-coloured sails, and the smaller single-handed Lasers - will be drawn up on the
beach for the crowds enjoying the seaside festivities to observe first-hand and talk to
the sailors.
There will be a "prize-giving" ceremony presided over by the
Governor of Chonburi Province or the Mayor of Pattaya City - hopefully both - at the Royal
Garden Plaza, during which the Royal Garden will serve food and beverage to the
participants and guests.
Prizes will also be sponsored by the Royal Garden. Following this, the
crowds will be able to see at first-hand the numerous precise sequences involved in
starting a yacht race, as the craft will launch from the beach and manoeuvre to start
another race back to the Royal Varuna.
Both the representatives of Pattaya City and the executives of the Royal Varuna regard
this event as a most positive step in promoting the resort as a marvellous haven for water
sports - particularly yachting, the prime object of the Royal Varuna Yacht Club for the
past 42 years around the Pattaya waters.

PSC TAGGS ...golf from the Hare House
Wednesday,
March 31 - Laem Chabang Country Club (Two Man Scramble)
1st: Mats Lindborg & Mikael Soderberg, 62.6
net
2nd: George Jackson & Bob Patterson, 62.8 net
3rd: Mark Gorda & Jimmy Little, 63.6 net
The last time the Hare House Gang played a two man scramble at Laem
Chabang, it was two days before Christmas. The winners were Mats Lindborg and Mikael
Soderberg. The Hare House went back to Laem Chabang on Wednesday, March 31, for a two man
scramble and the results were the same. Them boys love Laem Chabang.
Mats and Mikael shot a 33 on the A course and a 33 on the
B course, for a gross score of 66. Allowing twenty percent of their total
handicap, they were given 3.4 strokes for a net 62.6 and an extremely narrow two tenths of
a stroke victory over the duo of Bob Patterson and George Jackson. This was Bob and
Georges third consecutive second place finish in a TAGGS pairs competition. When
they break through for a win it will have to be on another course. Mats and Mikael own
Laem Chabang.
In third place with a net 63.6 was the Can-Am team of Mark Gorda and
Jimmy Little. They knew they were in the hunt for first place when they overcame their
playing partners Derek Reaper and Bill Thompson. Derek and Bill birdied the first five
holes and looked unbeatable en route to a front nine 32. They faltered on the
B course and finished in fourth place.
Friday, April 2 - Phutaluang Royal Thai Navy Golf Course (Stableford)
1st: Vic Cross 38 points
2nd: Mark Gorda 35 points
3rd: Mike Dabanovich 35 points
Vic Cross shot a 93 off his twenty-three handicap and won the TAGGS
Stableford competition at Phutaluang on Friday, April 2, with 38 points. This was Father
Times first win out of the Hare House in 1999. That his golf game has finally
started to come around is not at all surprising. Vic won more TAGGS singles competitions
in 1998 than any other golfer. What should get his fellow golfers attention is that
Vic looked very solid on a course where the tees were so far back that the total distance
must have been close to 6750 yards.
In second place was a Hare House regular whose game is also coming
back. Mark Gorda suffered a severe laceration to his hand last year and while he continued
to play, he couldnt grip the club well. His handicap is now back to twenty which is
where it was before the accident. Mark had 35 points and took the second spot in a count
back over fellow Canadian Mike Dabonovich.
