Pattaya Sports Club celebrates AGM bash
Each year in June, the Pattaya Sports Club Association
holds its Annual General Meeting to elect its committee to oversee all the activities that
encompass the club. These activities, although mostly centered around sports, are
certainly not limited to sports.
The Pattaya Sports Club Association is a non-profit, charitable
organization. With over 9,000 registered members, funds generated from annual dues alone
raise a considerable amount of money, all of which is put directly back into the
community, mostly in the form of charitable contributions.
Dick Caggiano
(center) calls out the nummbers, while Ron Herbert awards the prizes to the lucky winners
in the lucky draw.
Twice each year, once in December around Christmas and once in June
following the election of the committee, the Pattaya Sports Club gives something back to
the members that make these enormous charity donations possible. Twice a year, the PSC
holds a members party at one of the best locations organizers can find.
This year the party took place at the Town-In-Town Hotel on Wednesday,
June 30th. As he has done for the past few years, PSC Party Chairman Ken Crow threw a bash
to remember.
Literally hundreds of members were treated to an enormous spread of
viands, both Thai and Western, an exciting raffle with tons of valuable and useful prizes,
and exhilarating entertainment from one of the areas best bands, borrowed from
Delaneys Irish Pub.
A week earlier, also at the Town-In-Town Hotel, department heads met
with committee members and voting members to give annual reports and relate plans for the
coming year. A "new" committee was also elected, although most of the positions
on the committee didnt change.
Part of the PSC
Committee (L to R) Ron Herbert, Peter Malhotra, Mike Franklin, Bjarne Nielsen, Jim
Montgomery, Ken Crow, Ivan Town and La Traifuen. Montgomery, Ken Crow, Ivan Town and La
traifuen.
Peter Malhotra, reelected President of the Pattaya Sports Club, said,
"It is a great honor to be president of the sports club. (This year) I will try to do
a few more things to help promote the club, although the PSC is already one of the best
sport clubs in the region. Many of the same members were also reelected to the committee,
which adds to the continuity of the club."
Pattaya Sports Club Committee for 1999: President Pratheep (Peter) Malhotra, Vice
President James Montgomery, Secretary Ron Herbert, Treasurer Ivan Town, Founders Chair
Dick Caggiano, Golf Chairman Mike Franklin, Bowling Chairwoman Ms. La Montgomery, Fishing
Chairman Carl Engel, Softball Chairman John Macallen, Computer Chairman David Swaine,
Registrar Bjarne Nielsen, Charity Chairman Harry Riley, Public Relations Ray Rogers,
Internet & Media Officer Phil Sagar, Darts Chairman Len Banfield, Tennis Chairman
Craig Lewis and Member at Large Herbie Ishinaga.
CONGU and USGA Handicap Reviews
Pattaya Sports Club Golf
USGA Handicaps are updated and revised every two weeks. This is the
minimum frequency allowed by the USGA. However, players will be reviewed every week under
Rule Section 10-3 with regard to "Handicap reduction based on exceptional Tournament
Scores". If a players handicap has been reduced under this rule, his adjusted
handicap will be posted immediately.
All PSC members applying for a USGA Handicap are not necessarily
accepted for various reasons. If you have applied, but are not on the ensuing USGA
Handicap list, please leave a note in the office or fax (038 423809). You will receive a
reply stating the reason(s) you were not immediately accepted.
I cannot stress strongly enough that all scores must be returned.
Scores may be faxed to the PSC office at (038 423809). Data included in this fax must
include the following data:
Your Name and PSC number
Course played (which two nines if more than 18 holes)
Tees played from
Date
Score and adjusted score
CONGU Handicaps are reviewed weekly from scores returned in PSC Golf
Competitions. Additional cards, outside of competitions, may also be submitted but only
for a downward review of handicap.

Micks Place ends Rising Suns undefeated run
Micks Place made a strong statement in week 11 of the Friday
Night Mickey Mouse Darts League. They will not go quietly into the night. With Rising Sun
set to run away with the League title, Micks Place ended Rising Suns 10 match
winning streak and at the same time put themselves just one game back in the standings.
With just 3 weeks to go, it now looks as though it will be a battle straight through to
the finish.
In other week 11 action, Pleasure Dome beat Beer Put, Devonshire
produced a mild upset, winning their first match of the year over Cheers, and
Palmers moved Yorkie to the bottom of the table.
Alex from Pleasure Dome holds the leagues highest check out to
date, 154. Beer from Beer Put shot a perfect 180.
Next week sees Palmers vs. Beer Put, Pleasure Dome vs. Rising Sun, Micks
Place vs. Cheers, and Devonshire vs. Yorkie Bar.
Where else would you rather be?
PSC TAGGS... golf from the Hare House
Wednesday, June 23 - Natural Park Resort (Two Man Scramble)
1st: Malcolm Clare & George Jackson, 70.4 net
2nd: Herbie Ishinaga & Paul Kraft, 71.6 net
3rd: Richard Dumas & Marc Jernigan, 72.8 net
The Alternative Golf Gentlemens Society played their monthly
Two Man Scramble competition at Natural Park Resort on Wednesday, June 23. The
"Resort" course at Natural Park is a much fairer test of golf that its sister
course at Natural Park Hills. Perhaps the gentlemen from the Hare House let down their
guard. None of the teams were able to come close to par on their own, and only two teams
broke par given their 20% handicap allowance.
In first place with a gross score of 80 and a net score of 71.4 was the
same team that placed second in the previous weeks Better Ball competition. George
"One Ball" Jackson and Malcolm "The Snowman" Clare became a bit irked
on the first hole (playing the C-A course) when one of the members of the other team in
their foursome did a little bit of preening after sinking a curling par putt. If
youre going to win a Pairs Competition then you have to beat the other team in your
foursome. They did that with ease and made the poor sod who had opened his mouth wish he
had stayed in bed.
In second place, the boys from Shakey Petes shot the best gross
of the day with a 79. Herbie Ishinaga and Paul Kraft started slow with a string of five
consecutive bogeys. They then knocked off five pars and a birdie to put them right back in
the tournament. They ended the day with a net 71.6.
In third place with a net 72.8 were Richard Dumas and Marc Jernigan.
There was also a third member of this team, a Thai lady whose name was never given to this
ignorant scribe. The tournament officials may have forgotten her name, but they could not
have forgotten her swing. It was gorgeous.
Friday, June 26 - Siam Country Club (Stableford)
1st: Vic Cross, 40 points C/B
2nd: Neville Seward, 40 points
3rd: Derek Reaper, 38 points C/B
4th: Bill Thompson, 38 points
Vic Cross rarely strolls off any first tee without turning to one
of his regular playing partners and asking, with almost a sigh, "Where else would you
rather be"? On Friday, June 26, playing in the Stableford competition at Siam Country
Club, Vic made it clear to the rest of the field that he was where he wanted to be. At the
head of the pack, picking up pocket change playing golf in paradise. He parred the
eighteenth hole at Siam, and capped a 40 point effort that won the contest. There were
others in the competition who were heard muttering that they wished he was back in L.A.
looking for an old folks home.
In second place was TAGGS newcomer Neville Seward, who also had 40
points. Neville comes from Australia and seemed pretty bemused by the antics of the Hare
House crowd back on Soi Post Office after the days golf. Welcome to Pattaya Mr.
Seward. We look forward to seeing more of you in the future.
Tied at 38 points apiece were Derek Reaper and Bill Thompson, with Derek taking third
spot in a count back. Both these golfers started off extremely well, only to cool off on
the back nine. In Reapers case the Carlsburg probably kicked in, and in Bills
case, he probably woke up.

Star, this time for a three-man scramble, while Hare House go to Great Lake to play

Mason doubles with Splinter Group
PSC Splinter Golf Group from the Green
Bottle
Monday, 14 June - Natural Park Hills (3-man scramble)
Ged Mason, Jim Boyd and Jes Lees teamed up for a net 62.8 (Hcp. 7.2) to
win the competition on the day. SGG said goodbye to Jim Boyd who left Pattaya on 20 June
to return in October. Hurry back Jim, your smile will be missed.
Wednesday, 16 June - Century Chonburi (Stableford)
1st: Ged Mason, 41 points
2nd: Andy Wellington, 39 pts.
3rd: Peter Renggli, 35 pts.
Ged Mason edges closer to his personal target of a single figure
handicap. His best ever recorded was 10 in the UK.
Thirteen players turned out on the day to play a course which must be
the best value for money in the area (despite its limited catering and changing
facilities).
Friday, 18 June - Eastern Star (2-man better ball)
Gez Tracey and Andy Wellington teamed up to win the event with a net
67.
Steve Ross, Chairman of the Splinter Group who is certainly noted for
his competitiveness, was not pleased to lose by 1 stroke to his friend off the course Gez
Tracy and wasnt pleased that his friend Andy Wellington made this possible.
Monday, 21 June - Laem Chabang (Stroke)
1st: Andy Wellington, net 67, gross 75
2nd: Len Jones, net 72, gross 107
Andy Wellington achieved a victory at Laem Chabang with a superb 75
gross, net 67 off his 8 handicap. Andy is back to the Philippines next week so perhaps
some others might get a chance of winning. See you November, Andy.
Wed., 23 June - Banpakong (Stableford)
1st: Udo Waak, 36 points
2nd: Steve Ross, 35 points
Lower scores than normal on this course reflected a difficult day
with only 7 competitors.
Friday, 25 June - Green Valley - Diana Medal Mug
1st: Neil Munro, gross 78, net 70
2nd: Andy Wellington, gross 78, net 70
3rd: Steve Mascari, gross 75, net 70
Some superb golf played on this day. And even though Steve Mascari
had an opening nine of 34 gross, 2 under par, this wasnt good enough. Three people
tied with net 70s. The winner on his first week back was the new (super slim) Neil Munro.
By the way, dont mention coconut trees to Andy or Steve who both lost balls in
them.
Montana returns to take June Kronborg Medal Mug
Pattaya Sports Club Golf from the Café
Kronborg
Sattahip - Monday 18thth June (Stroke)
A well watered course, coupled with the infamous grab grass
on the fairways, made the early going tough on the traditional South and North courses.
Ric Montana carded the only below par round of the day with a net 69 to take the Kronborg
Monthly Mug.
Winner: Ric Montana, Net 69
2nd: Seppo Makinen, Net 73
3rd: Bernie Tuppin, Net 75 C/B
4th: John Taylor, Net 75
Century Chonburi - Thursday 1st July (Stroke)
One of the best kept secrets on the Eastern Seaboard and a fine day
too, provided the setting for the first tournament in July. Longer than it first appears,
this fine course always presents a challenge. Udo managed to beat consistent Ebrahim on
count-back.
Winner: Udo Waack, Net 72 C/B
2nd: Ebrahim, Net 72
3rd: Mike Franklin, Net 75
