Drag Team wins Charity Classic 2000
Streets kids are the real winners
The Pattaya Sports Club held their fourth annual
Charity Classic Golf Tournament on Friday, January 21, at Phoenix Golf and
Country Club. It was promoted as the Charity Classic 2000, but it will be
remembered as the “Million Baht Giveaway.” One hundred and forty-one
people walked away from Phoenix on Friday evening with over one million
baht in cash and donated prizes.

The 140 golfers who entered the tournament won over
B.600,000 in gifts, either on the course as technical prizes or in the
various Lucky Draws held at the awards ceremony. The 141st person to walk
away from Phoenix a winner was Father Michael from the Pattaya Orphanage.
The Charity Classic 2000 raised over 410,000 baht for the Street Kids
Center.
Father Michael addressed the participants and expressed
his gratitude to the Pattaya Sports Club members who have selected the
Street Kids Center as the on going charity project to honor His Majesty
the King’s 6th Cycle, 72nd Birthday. He thanked the sponsors of the
tournament, whose generosity was a credit to the community. He also
thanked Mike Franklin, PSC Golf Committee Chairman, Stephen Beard, Charity
Classic 2000 Committee Chairman, and Harry Riley, PSC Charity Chairman. An
extraordinary amount of work went into organizing this event, and everyone
who participated is to be congratulated for an outstanding job.

Winner: Glen “Lassie” Dragland. Photo by John CC Gibson
One of the members on the Organizing Committee was Glen
“Lassie” Dragland. Lassie was so involved with the myriad of last
minute details, that he hadn’t had time to put together a team to play
in the tournament. On Tuesday night he was attending one of the many
Charity Classic 2000 meetings at the Hare House. Realizing he had to
“fish or cut bait”, Lassie started looking for warm bodies. Marc
Jernigan wandered in to the Hare House and before he had time to order a
beer, he was on Lassie’s un-named team. Bob Patterson was back in town
and he was drafted. Three days before the tee off, and the organizing
committee was throwing in suggestions to name Lassie’s team.
Lassie wasn’t ecstatic about Drag Team. It probably
sounded too much like Drag Queen. But what the hell, who was going to pay
attention to one team out of thirty-five? They had a fourth member, but on
the day of the tournament, Jim Aspin was a no show. So with only three
members, the Drag Team went out and won the Charity Classic 2000. Lassie
was the Individual Champion with 55 Stableford points. Marc Jernigan had
50 points and Bob Patterson had forty.

The format for the tournament was Team Stableford, with
the best three scores counting for the win. The Drag Team’s total of 145
won by one point over the CMI team. Receiving their Second Place Trophy
and Phoenix Green Fee were Mark Beaton, Mike Smith, Karl Kikuts, and Ken
Yearsley. Third Place went to the Classroom Caners (Steve Ross, Stanley
Fry, Steve Mascari, and Mike Morris) who had 141 points. They edged out
the Heinekens (Bert Guy, Paul Butler, George Jackson, and Mick Jones) by
one point.

The average score of the first four teams was 143
points. Last year the average was 155 points. This year it was decided to
limit the one aspect of the Charity Classic that makes it unique on the
Pattaya Sports Club calendar - mulligans. Mulligans are rare. They are
golf’s second chance. It is not unusual for a friendly match to allow
mulligans on the first tee. Should you hit a bad shot on that first drive
down the fairway, tee up another ball and try again. The Rules of Golf
don’t allow them, but common practice makes them acceptable. Last year
the Charity Classic allowed 36 mulligans to be used anywhere, with a
maximum of two per hole. Even the most needy of golfers had a hard time
using 36 mulligans. This year the maximum was 24 and the reduction made
for more interesting golf. It also made for an average of twelve less
points per team.

Each mulligan ticket also was a Lucky Draw ticket. If
you bought the “Full Monty” allotment of 24 mulligans, then you got 24
chances for some very nice prizes.
The organizing committee wanted to adequately thank the
members of the Pattaya Sports Club for their support in the Charity
Classic 2000. The number one priority was to raise money for the Street
Kids Center and the Center’s need for clean water.
The second priority was to give back to the members
some of what they had put in. They beat the bushes for prizes that would
really be welcome and they succeeded beyond their expectations.

At the awards ceremony, Mike Franklin was a busy man.
Every entrant had already picked up a prize by virtue of entering the
tournament. But there was still a lot to give away. Beautiful golf bags
with the PSC logo embroidered on the face; seven day memberships in six
local courses with Great Lake leading the way with four; annual and three
month memberships in the Dusit Resort Fitness Club: enough vouchers from
Delaney’s to keep that pub full for the next couple of weeks; a custom
made driver from Thai Ger Golf; one night for two in the Royal Garden
Resort’s Royal Suite; and Club Class Holidays one week holiday in a 5
Star accommodation anywhere in Thailand.
This embarrassment of riches capped a wonderful day. It
was said after the Rossie Scramble on New Year’s Eve, that if the new
millennium could begin as successfully as the old one ended, it would be a
banner year for the Pattaya Sports Club. Well, it did. It will also be a
banner year for the Street Kids Center. Because of the help and
involvement from the golfing community in Pattaya, those kids are on their
way to having a real chance in life. “Just Do It” has now become
“You Did It”.

Marco Miagostovich wins the Great Laser
Island Race
by Richard van den Heuvel
On Sunday morning, 9th January, a number of dedicated
Laser sailors assembled at the Royal Varuna Yacht Club in Pattaya to compete
in the 17th Great Laser Island Race around Koh Larn. The inaugural race took
place in 1984 and was the brainchild of the Sailing Secretary of that time,
Reginald Chambers. Since then it has been sailed every year. It is a long
distance race especially for Lasers and, depending on the wind, can take
from 3 to 5 hours.
The wind this Sunday was rather tardy to get up and by
the starting time at 11 a.m. hardly moved the sails. However, the
competitors, keen to get on the water, elected to start. The race is
designed with a staggered beach start, the less experienced sailors getting
a few extra minutes before the faster competitors are allowed to leave. So,
under the watchful eye of Race Officer Richard, they jumped on their boats
close to the beach, one by one, according to their skills.
For the first half hour it was hard to find a puff of
wind to reach the windward mark in front of the Asia Pattaya Hotel, but
gradually the wind picked up and by noon was blowing at a gentle 4 knots.
Fortunately the wind increased further to some 6 knots and carried the fleet
comfortably around Koh Larn, down to the leeward mark near the Royal Cliff
Beach Hotel and back to the finish line at the flagpole of the Club.
The first to pass the line, after 3 hours and 37 minutes
sailing, was RVYC’s Rear Commodore, Marco Miagostovich, closely followed
by Morten Jakobsen, fleet captain Charlie Zbinden and a visitor from the
Royal New Zealand Sailing Squadron in Auckland, Mark Rutherford. Then
followed veteran Laser sailor Reg Chambers who, at 74 years old, is still a
force to reckon with! The final three finishers were Marcel Dubbelman, Peter
Harper and Khun Sunti.
So a pleasant weekend on the water and at the Royal Varuna Yacht Club
came to an end.
New boxing school opens in Pattaya
The
Pattaya International Muaythai Training School opened its doors on January
20th. The school, headed by 40-year Muaythai teaching veteran Yodthong
Saenanund, will teach Thai boxing to anyone who wishes to learn. The complex
features a Thai boxing fitness center, an entertainment show area, and an
arena for staging international Thai Boxing matches. The faculty of the
school wishes to promote and preserve the ancient art of Muaythai by
training serious boxers and demonstrating the art to other students in the
area. The school is located on Thepprasit Road near Sukhumvit Highway.
Friday Premier Darts League Starts anew
The 5 times champion “Tippy’s” had a practice match
against the Thistle but lost the beer leg. SGP started off very good by
winning the game over Da Bar, but Middy had to give a drink to Da. John 1
and John 2 (Rose Garden - last year’s “strongest team”) won both the
game and beer against Mango (this may be their only winning match). Mr. Loy
and the steady Bunker brought a full team and walked on mark the Lazi Pigs.
Good turnout at the presentation party (at SGP) last Friday. Mr. Loy felt
sorry he missed the party, especially when Middy presented the winning
trophy to Pook and his crew. Don’t worry Mr. Loy; this season we’ll have
the second trophy for you.

Week of ties in PGS
PSC PGS from the Bunker
Tuesday, 18-1-2000, Siam Country Club (Stableford)
A Flight
The flying Finn Hannu Kemilla tied for first place with
Swiss Peter Renggli on 37 points, whilst Joe Sparey “Good to see you back
on form”, Paul Butler, Bo Ahlgren and Nick Holbraugn all finished on 36
points for joint second place.
‘B’ Flight
The unstoppable ‘Keith Fortt’ and last week’s
winner John Gibson played match play against each other in the same
competition. Even John’s best ever score could not beat Keith’s dogged
determination to win the match play event. Bill Jones, who could give 20
years to John or Keith, also came joint first with 42 points.
Keith Fortt, John Gibson & Bill Jones, 42 pts.
Near pins: Wilf Latham, Keith Fortt.
Only two nearest the pins could be recorded due to the
ground staff moving the two ‘first nine’ pins half way through the comp.
Semi finals match play in combination with the Stableford
competition will be held at Treasure Hills Golf Club. The draw: Bert
“Remmy” guy vs. Roy ‘Tiger’ Mitchell, Keith ‘Dogged’ Fortt vs.
George Meigh or Norman Brooks.
Apologies to Mike Jones who was not mentioned of his best ever win of -1
at Sattahip winning the ‘B’ Flight on January 4th. He is now
affectionately known as ‘Mighty Mike’. Jones has offered to give free
golf lessons to any struggling players, just give a ring.
