Young Guns In Johnnie Walker Classic Shoot-Out

Tiger Woods confirms participation

The Johnnie Walker Classic has always attracted the world’s best players, and the 10th anniversary of Asia’s premier and best known golf tournament at Bangkok’s Alpine Golf and Sports Club, November 16 - 19, 2000, will be no exception.

World No. 1 and current US Open Champion Tiger Woods has already confirmed his presence, and the Managing Director of United Distillers and Vintners Asia Pacific, Ed Shyurng, announced a posse of other young and exciting players who will be coming to Bangkok to play in the Johnnie Walker Classic this November. There are Sergio Garcia of Spain, Jesper Parnevik from Sweden, Ernie Els from South Africa, Michael Campbell from New Zealand and Prayad Marksaeng from Thailand.

“These players can be hailed as the ‘Young Guns’ of the golfing world. Aside from representing the best of the new generation of golfers that has emerged in recent years, each of these ‘Young Guns’ has his own particular brand of talent and charisma that has served to inspire fans around the globe,” said Mr. Shyurng.

Twenty year old Sergio Garcia, ‘El Nino’ as he is known around the world, turned pro in April 1999 after winning the British Amateur Championship and finishing low amateur in the 1999 US Masters. Currently ranked 12th in the world and already heralded as the most exciting Spanish player since Seve Ballesteros, Sergio will be making his first appearance in the Johnnie Walker Classic and in Thailand.

Jesper Parnevik comes from Sweden, but now lives and plays most of his golf in the USA. Currently ranked No. 10 in the world, Jesper has won twice on the US PGA Tour this year and with seven other top 10 finishes, is currently in 4th place on the US Money List.

Ernie Els, the tall, easy-going South African, won the 1997 Johnnie Walker Classic and narrowly missed retaining

the title the following year when Tiger Woods snatched victory at the second hole of the sudden-death play-off in Phuket. With two US Open titles already to his name, Ernie finished tied second at this year’s US Open Championship and, with seven other top 10 finishes, is currently ranked No. 4 in the world.

Michael Campbell, who hails from New Zealand, won last year’s Johnnie Walker Classic in Taiwan, a victory that so boosted his confidence that he won three of the first four tour events of this year.

Currently ranked No. 31 in the world, Michael’s consistent play has put him in 5th place on the European Money List.

Prayad Marksaeng, one of Thailand’s golf superstars, just won the UBC Supersport Thai PGA Tour 2000 only last week. He is currently ranked 2nd on the Thailand PGA Tour and 9th on the Asian PGA Tour.

The Johnnie Walker Classic 2000, with prize money of 48 million Baht

(800,000 UK Pounds), is officially sanctioned by the European, Australasian, and Asian Tours. The starting field of 132 players will include leading players from China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand.

The first round of the Johnnie Walker Classic 2000 will start on Thursday, November 16, preceded by the Johnnie Walker Amateur Championship Pro-Am on Wednesday, November 15.

The Johnnie Walker Classic will be televised live throughout the four days of the tournament and broadcast worldwide.

Tickets will be priced at 300 Baht for each of the four days of the tournament, and a season pass to attend all four days will be sold for 800 Baht. Tickets to Wednesday’s Pro-Am tournament will be sold for 200 Baht.

The Johnnie Walker Classic is owned and staged by IMG in partnership with United Distillers and Vintners.

Jim Montgomery to head PSC Golf

At a meeting of golfers from the Pattaya Sports Club held on Wednesday 5th July,2000 Jim Montgomery was elected to head PSC Golf together with an initial committee of 4 consisting of George Bennison, Bill Davis, Bernie Tuppin and Dave Richardson.

Jim is no stranger to the Club as he first joined in 1981 and has held the position of Vice President of the Club for the past 3 years. He was re-elected at the recent Annual General Meeting for another term. He has accepted the additional duties of PSC Golf because of the importance he places on this position to the Club in general. Serving the community must run in the family as his lovely wife La has been PSC Bowling Chairman for several years.

Jim Montgomery

Over the years Jim has served on many golf committees dating back to the 1980’s when Mike Smith was Golf Chairman. In fact he was the last committee member to do the handicaps by hand before the age of computerisation arrived on the scene.

Jim stated that initially he and his committee would evaluate the existing policies of PSC Golf with a view to offering additional options to members by way of adding further participating venues to the PSC umbrella and organised social golf trips to other golfing areas of Thailand on a regular basis.

Jim would like to assure the international golfing community as well as local golfers that they are welcome to join the Pattaya Sports Club and play in our many organised competitions which are well publicised on our web site. When you join the Club it enables the contributions to the many local charities to be increased as well as putting a smile on the face of those under-privileged children so worthy of our help.

Jim may add further members to his Committee as he proceeds and will keep members informed of any changes to existing policies as well as new policies introduced.

We give Jim and his incoming Committee our best wishes for the challenging job ahead.

PH3 Run 852

We went straight to the A-site, which was next door to Papa Sans house. James said who’s that lady who just picked me up? Oh that’s Ewok, I’ve been trying to pick her up for years, but she wont go near me. That’s what happens when you get older, James.

So this week we had a Live Hare Run. On in live hares, Charlie Manson, Festering Streaker and Boy George. They told us paper is white and there will be a back check and they needed ten minutes start. So off they went, Spaghetti head the timekeeper. While they were off we had some new shoes to deal with. A few time checks, and some lying suckers with copy watches said eight minutes fifty seconds. So Chicken Nugget said, let them go, Dad. OK off you go.

The stampede was off to get those hares. Fossil was livid, - you let them go after only four minutes, everything could be ruined, and you only gave them four minutes! Nugget’s eyes were staring at this heaving chest. I haven’t seen ones like that since I was born. Well, they are not real son. Pinky was taken short, he was sitting in the back of a pick up clinging onto the moneybox, and then I was on my own with Chicken nugget. There was the bus, Sharon Tate sitting with the bus driver. (I hope Charlie doesn’t read this).

I went to follow the pack. I was with Pegleg and Flying Frog. We seemed to be going around in circles, and then all the stragglers were coming along. We eventually turned right onto a road and there were the front-runners. Apparently the back check had stuffed them all.

After about fifty minutes we were heading in the direction of the reservoir, some thinking we were going back to Papa Sans. But no, the B site was on the right, a nice little picnic area. The cracks were grazing. Jeep and Lek were making sandwiches. Time to mingle and unwind. Ewok was selling raffle tickets, Boy George molesting women. Fini the Faggot molesting anybody that got near him. Even James was not safe.

Time to start the circle. Hash meeting this week at the Scandi Bar. Only two virgins, one of them named Suway, she was nice. Splat on in, the man who jumps from aeroplanes with no parachute. Hash security Flying Frog took the circle and BB an Aussie grand master who hashes out of Papua New Guinea, was a trash violator. If the bad R.A. Sir Airhead were there things would have been worse. Nearly forget to mention the hares, Charlie Manson, Festering Streaker and Boy George.

A good live hare run with only four minutes start. But they had to run fast. Time for the Hares song. A good one Lads. Hash Hymn and off to the TQ. Loads of Hot Dogs But where was everybody? Apparently the bus forgot to go back for the cars at Papa Sans. So they had to turn around on the highway, I wonder whose fault that was? Eventually they turned up and it was party time, and a good time was had by all.

July fishing starts off with large sharks

Two more teams joined in the Pattaya Sports Club Fishing promoted tournament over the last weekend. On Friday, June 30th, the Local Fish & Trips left Bank Saray at 6:00PM in the evening and had great success. Boat Captain Ting and Frank Collins, the team captain, from the Local Fish & Trips Bar found the right spot for fishing just off Koh Kram.

(Left) Rich proudly displays his catch

Curtis Hinz landed a 92-pound Black Tip Shark at 11:45PM. Shortly afterwards, at 1:45AM, a 70 pounder (another Black Tip Shark) was caught by Peter Muller of the Tavern Restaurant. Frank Collins capped off the night with a 154-pound “cowtail” stingray at 3:30AM. After spending one hour and 45 minutes on the ray, photos were taken and the ray was released unharmed.

(Right) Jon lands a 22-pound stingray

Later on Saturday morning, July 1, the Pacific Brass & Copper Tube Co., Ltd. team went out on Captain Dang’s boat from the Pattaya Pier with Tim Bobos, Jon Adams, Rich Mathews, and Tai Huaykhuntod. Jon landed the first catch of the day, a 22-pound stingray, followed two hours later with a Queen by Rich. K. Tai (our 11-year old youngster) managed a total of 28 fish for the day on a hand line.

For more details about joining the PSC promoted fishing tournaments, contact Carl Engel at 038-410-228 or stop in at the SGP Bar & Caf้, or the Local Fish & Trips Bar both located on Soi Yodsak.

TAGGS Independence Day Open 2000

The Haven hosted its first major golf tournament on Tuesday, the Fourth of July. This smart and stylish restaurant and hotel has replaced the Hare House as the home of The Alternative Gentlemen’s Golf Society. With its attractive open-air ambiance catching the sea breezes on Soi 13, it is indeed a “haven” and a fitting set for an apr?s golf buffet following another well-run TAGGS Independence Day Open.

The golf took place at Phoenix on the Mountain and Ocean courses. The conditions were ideal for this Stableford event, and with ninety-two golfers entered and twenty-seven trophies up for grabs, a lot of Pattaya golfers were going to go home happy. The four happiest were probably Toy Ryser, who won the Ladies Division with 49 points; Paul Lipsham, winner of the 3rd Division (20-28) with 49 points; TAGGS Chairman and The Haven owner Stephen Beard who had 41 points to lead the 2nd Division; and Kevin Taylor who led the Premier Division (0-14) with 41 Stableford points. Forty-one points were the winning scores for the first two divisions in last year’s tournament.

In addition to celebrating American Independence Day, this event is also a birthday party. Local PGA pro Richard “T Squared” Livingston was born on the Fourth of July shortly after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Richard doesn’t look half his age. He doesn’t act half his age either as he makes his rounds dispensing the golf wisdom he picked up from Tom Morris. Richard is especially adept at teaching the art of putting which probably explains the number of local lasses who have such good form. Richard will be glad to teach anyone anything they want to know except where he got the nickname “T Squared”.

The birthday bash took place next to the soon-to-be swimming pool at The Haven. The fare was typical American back yard Fourth of July picnic food. Jerry Lien, winner of a Near Pin, celebrated his Lazarus act by eating seventeen hamburgers and four hot dogs. The good news was that there wasn’t a whole lot of room left for the baked beans. The Heineken draft was especially popular, and Steve Beard knew it was time for the awards ceremony when Mark Gorda and Derek Reaper threatened to go skinny-dipping in the pool, which has no water. Retired PSC Golf Chairman Mike Franklin handed out the trophies. With Mike emceeing the prize giving, the majority of golfers present knew that the world was still tilted correctly on its axis and that the sun would most probably arise in the east.

Scanning the Results Sheet a lot of familiar names pop up. Steve Mascari once again takes a Low Gross trophy. Back when Richard Livingston was Tom Morris’s caddy, there were no handicaps and the only winner was the guy who put it in the hole with the least number of strokes. Steve has done that more than anyone else in the big tournaments in Pattaya and he should be so honored. Banjob Franklin, Richard Dumas, Steve Donovan, and Mark Campbell all took home trophies for second place in their divisions. Third place Knotted Putters went to Urai Kongnork, Mike Davies, George Jackson, and Rick Sharp.

It was a fine day of golf and an auspicious beginning for The Haven. The old red-eyed rabbit from the Hare House will be missed, but nothing lasts forever, especially in this town. The double palm tree logo of The Haven book marks a new page and another day in paradise.

Fitness Tips: The Beginners Guide to choosing a sports shoe - Part 1

by David Garred
Club Manager Dusit Resort Sports Club

G’Day All,

Here’s a challenge for you. Walk into any sports store, head for the shoe department and try if you can, to select your perfect sports shoes. Keep this in mind - if you think the answer revolves largely around which colour you choose or how they match your running shorts then you have already failed.

In practice, going in search of the right sports shoe isn’t something you should attempt without the help of a qualified professional, that is of course if you want to buy one that does more than match your outfit.

Before you even get out the door on your shopping trip, there are two pieces of information that you need to arm yourself with.

Firstly you need to know what the basic shape of your foot is and secondly you have to know how it works, bio-mechanically.

The first piece of information comes into play when it comes time to choose the right shape of your shoe, because as soon as you start looking you will realise they come in straight, curved and semi-curved styles or lasts. Ideally, you want the shape of your shoe to match the shape of your feet as closely as possible. If it doesn’t you risk inflicting your foot with anything from blisters to more serious injury caused by the change in how your foot hits the ground.

The second thing to find out before you walk through the door of a sports store, etc.... is how your foot works.

Feet move in three different ways:

Neutrally - if so you are really lucky, but are also in the minority

Pronating - or rolling inwards. This is one of the most common causes of injury in distance runners. Drawing a line from the big toe to the back of the ankle and looking right down along that line, the foot rolls toward the centerline of the body.

Supinating - or rolling outwards, a problem which isn’t too common. Drawing a line from the big toe to the back of the ankle and looking right down along that line, the foot rolls away from the centerline of the body

A simple do it yourself way to decide which category you fall into is to grab your old runners and examine the soles. Take a close look at the heels and at the mid-soles. If the mid-sole is compressed on the inside of the shoe, chances are you are probably a pronator - your feet roll inwards which cause more wear and tear on that part of the sole. On the flip side if the wear and tare is more obvious towards the outer edge, you’re probably a supinator. The same goes for the heel - simply place your shoes on a table and view them from behind.

IF you are still unsure how to diagnose yourself, here’s another trick to try. Put on a pair of shorts and stand bare foot looking at yourself in a full length mirror. Your feet should be shoulder width apart and be pointing directly forward. Now bend your knees to 90 degrees and watch your knees as you go down. If your kneecaps remain inline and centered over the mid-portion of your feet, it’s more likely you have a neutral foot function.

However, if when you start to bend your knees, they start to point inwards, towards your big toes, chances are you are a pronator. If the same movement starts to angle your knees outwards, towards your little toes, then you supinate. Whilst diagnosing foot function isn’t always this simple, at least it will give you a starting point to make an educated decision.

Next week I will expound further on how to select the right shoes. This week, keep wearing the old ones!

Mark Gorda edges by Jim Little to make history

TAGGS... golf from The Haven

Years from now golfers will sit around the 19th Hole and ask trivia questions like who was the first winner of a regular TAGGS competition out of The Haven. The correct answer will be Mark Gorda with 33 points in a Stableford competition at Natural Park Hill Golf Club on Friday, July 7, 2000. Mr. Gorda made a par on the first hole, and the resulting three points was a nice way to start the day. After making a bogey on the second hole, Mark must have said something that offended the golf gods. On the next seven holes he amassed a measly eight points, and even on a course as tough as Natural Park Hill, he had zero chance of winning this event. Unless he offered to sacrifice his first born; or give up drinking; remain celibate for the next five years. He must have promised something. His twenty points on the back nine has given Mark his thirty seconds of fame and made him a lifelong answer to a trivia question.

Losing out to Mark Gorda in a count back was his old buddy Jimmy Little. In contrition to losing, Jimmy has to write a weekly promo for the Canadian Jackalope Open that Mark Gorda and the Canadian Mafia are presenting on September 8 at Eastern Star. Jimmy reckons that by the time September rolls around, golfers will be so sick of hearing about the Jackalope, they will refuse to play. This bit of revenge smacks of “sore loser” and besides, the El Shaddai Home for Abandoned Children would never forgive him. Mark that date down on your golf calendar.

1st Mark Gorda 33 points, 2nd Jimmy Little 33 points, 3rd Brian Kelly 29 points.
