Sports and dance highlight annual
athletic competition
Football, volleyball, handball, table tennis and tug of
war were the featured sports in the recently held Pattaya City School #9
annual “SEA Games” athletic competition.
Students
from Pattaya’s School #9 performed a traditional Thai dance on the final
day of their annual “SEA Games”.
This annual event is organized to inspire competition
and create an interest in sports, while inspiring students to use sports
as a method of using their spare time wisely. Organizers aim to introduce
students to healthy forms of exercise and stress the importance of
maintaining good physical condition.
The athletic competition builds discipline, leadership
qualities and good behavior, offering students an alternative to drugs and
other unacceptable habits.
The school’s athletic competition also helps in the
process of selecting athletes with exceptional abilities so that the best
may compete in future inter-city athletic competitions.
The final day’s events included plenty of
entertainment, including students performing traditional Thai dances. A
special football game was played between the school faculty and parents of
the students attending the school.
Pattaya’s Deputy Mayor Watana Jantanawaranon
officially presided over the opening of the “Games”.
Barichello brilliant!
Coulthard’s chances K. O’d by crazed
spectator
The German Grand Prix at the Hockenheim circuit was one
of the best F1 races seen for some time, with the emotional winner,
Brazilian Rubens Barichello in the Ferrari, notching up his first ever F1
win in 123 starts. Mika Hakkinen in the McLaren Mercedes came through for
second, with his team mate David Coulthard third.
Rubens
Barichello - jubilant victor at Hockenheim.
The weekend had not started well for Barichello, who,
after Qualifying problems on the Saturday, just managed to scrape onto the
grid in 18th place. Similar misfortunes saw Heinz-Harald Frentzen one grid
in front of him, with both of them looking to be well out of the money for
the race. Button (BMW Williams) could not find the right one to push at the
start of the formation lap and was then relegated to last grid spot.
At the green light, pole sitter David Coulthard dived
across the bow of Michael Schumacher’s Ferrari (a move he learned from
Schumacher himself), forcing the German wide, who was then clipped by
Fisichella in the Benetton. For the second race in a row, the World
Championship leader was out of the race at the first corner.
In the ensuing melee, Mika (Happy) Hakkinen (whose wife,
Erja the Ice Maiden is expecting a child) slipped into the lead to see the
McLaren Mercedes 1-2 and already the pit pundits were totalling up the
points they would get. What was not seen, however, was the meteoric rise of
Barichello who had gone from 18th to 8th in one lap.
By lap 15 Barichello was up to third behind the
Hakkinen/Coulthard duo and Frentzen the yellow Jordan was up to 6th. Both
pitted two laps later, rejoining the race in 6th and 7th places.
Lap 24 became the turning point for Coulthard, when a mad
ex-Mercedes worker jumped the barriers and began walking leisurely down the
track. This brought out the safety car while the nutter was removed, taking
an incredible three laps (8 minutes). In that time 14 cars pitted for fuel,
but Coulthard got left out by his crew and by the time he was brought in,
the safety car was off and Coulthard rejoined now down in 6th, after being
in a secure 2nd before the incident.
Lap 29 saw the safety car out again, after Pedro Diniz in
the Sauber decided to use Jean Alesi’s Prost as a crash test barrier,
showering the circuit with assorted wheels and blue bits of bodywork.
Alesi’s epithets were the same colour, but in voluble French!
On lap 32, the rains came - not all over the circuit -
but only on half of it, making tyre choice one of coin tossing and hoping.
In the following 5 laps, 10 of the drivers had opted to change to wet tyres,
leaving Barichello, Coulthard and Frentzen 1st, 2nd and 3rd - all on dry
tyres.
The order changed yet again when with 7 laps to go
Coulthard decided to try wet tyres, gambling on the weather becoming worse.
Coulthard should stick to driving race cars, as the gamble did not pay off,
leaving Barichello clear in front from Hakkinen, Coulthard, Salo (Sauber)
and Jenson Button. The action was not yet over, with Button forging past
Salo and into 4th and rapidly closing on Coulthard, to get within 1.5
seconds of his first podium finish.
But it was Barichello all the way. A magnificent drive,
with Michael Schumacher being the first to congratulate him (a gesture that
was not lost on the millions watching the race worldwide - the man does have
a heart!), followed by Hakkinen and Coulthard, who hoisted him on their
shoulders on the podium.
The championship now stands at Schumacher 56, Coulthard
and Hakkinen 54 and Barichello 46. The next round is on August 13 in
Hungary.
PH3 Run 855
I hope you all managed to pay a visit to Patrick’s
Belgium National Day party last Friday night 21st, what a good spread of
food, thanks Patrick. After last weeks Belgium pink paint run, one can only
wonder what was in store for us this week. The F Nose run with a spectacular
view is what it said in last weeks hash sheet.
We signed up as normal in the Scandi Bar, then boarded
the bus for the journey to the A-site, a mere 36 Km from town (will we be
having A-sites in Cambodia soon, as the hares get more adventurous)? Maybe
we could hire a hash helicopter instead of the bus and fit in a visa run at
the same time!
We arrived at the A-site after 45 mins, half way up a
mountain with a spectacular view as stated. A little awkward for the bus to
reach but we made it. The Grand Master General Kidney Wiper called the
circle (good to see you back Billy), new shoes were dealt with, Boy George
was volunteered to drink from Amazons new shoes.
The hare F Nose then described the run and how he is eco
friendly, yes folks he will be out here tomorrow collecting the paper for
use a fourth time on his next run. After about 50 minutes the first runners
arrived back with Butt weasel leading the pack of British Marines including
Boy George.
During the Twilight Zone most people were taking in the
view waiting on the final lot of runners arriving back. Ewok must have been
late back for the picnic because Dr Pinky was selling the raffle tickets
giving her time to finish her food.
The circle was finally called at 7:15. Ewok did the
raffle with the usual prizes, Drippy’s daughter, Ice Maiden was late in
claiming her prize, this then went to Charlie Manson who being the gentleman
he is gave it back to Ice Maiden. The Hare was then iced, most people said
good run. Returners, Virgins and their sponsors were given down downs. A
couple of anniversaries this week, Mrs Head and Pink Rabbit both did their
50th run. Leavers then in for down downs. Now it was time for some religion
with Sir Airhead, hare F Nose on ice for de briefing about the run. Sir
Airhead decided you could have a better view from the top of any
multi-storey hotel in Pattaya without having to drive nearly 40 Km for it.
Spunk Bubble iced again with Needle Dick (hash hat missing again. Dave from
Classroom 2 joined them on the ice and was named Dodgy Dave. Woodpecker was
iced with Porn his new bride; she was named Slasher after tearing up his
clothes after a couple of day’s marriage (can these Thai women handle
their drink or what?) Missing Personality was iced for taking the towel his
crack had won in the raffle and reducing her to tears, but a worse sin was
then uncovered, last week he ran the run in new shoes without declaring
this, but this didn’t get past the eagle eye of Sir Airhead, a double down
down was his punishment. It was now time for the hare’s song; F Nose sang
a couple of verses of Poetry from his lawyer’s manual then it was time for
the Hash Hymn. The bus was loaded up and off we went on the long journey
back to the TQ2. The Grand Master was sent forward to make sure the bus went
the right way and make sure Miss Perfect didn’t hi-jack the bus again.
Good hot dogs and French fries were enjoyed, with the
usual top up of Pizza if you chose to stay a little longer, many thanks
Steve.

Tippy’s tops whilst Ritz looks wooden
After 10 weeks of the Friday Night Premier League Darts
League, The Ritz (new members) seem to have reserved the Wooden Spoon for
themselves for their roaring start of zero wins.
Meanwhile, Thistle and the steady Bunker are fighting
for second place, and are separated by just one win. Good luck Mr. Loy!
Never mind the first. Leave it with champions.
Nung from Mango has achieved the league’s highest out
to date: 120.
Pook from Tippy’s, Klang from Thistle, Dennis from
Lazi Pig and Steve from Bunker have all achieved maximum scores of 180
this season.

Sun shining in M&M Darts
Rising Sun has gotten off to a fast start in the early
stages of the Friday Night Mickey Mouse Darts League. After winning both of
their opening matches, the Sun is now the only undefeated team in the
league.
Nearly every other team in the fun darts league is tied
for second, as all but Pleasure Dome have begun with one win and one loss
apiece. The Domers are the only slingers yet to record a victory.
Results from week 2 saw Rising Sun take the match and
beer from Mick’s Place, Yorkie gain the match and beer sweep over Pleasure
Dome, Palmer’s took the match over Cheers but went home thirsty, and
Devonshire won both match and beer over Beer Put.
This week (Aug 4) sees Rising Sun v Pleasure Dome, Beer

Fitness Tips: Creatine
findings and Food Variations
by David Garred
Club Manager Dusit Resort Sports Club
G’day Pattaya,
The benefits of Creatine as possibly the only
supplement to augment strength, as well as increase the rate of growth of
lean muscle tissue, are coming back down to reality after being up in the
air since its release.
Creatine supplements have been the subject of so many
research studies, that it is hard to know which research outcome to
believe. In order to reach a consensus concerning the effects of oral
Creatine supplement use, the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM)
recently enlisted twelve world-renowned specialists to review the hundreds
of scientific studies that have been conducted.
This is what they have found: Performance during
extremely powerful anaerobic activity is enhanced with Creatine
supplements, but aerobic performance is not. Creatine does not increase
the rate of maximal force production, nor does it enhance maximal
isometric strength. The supplement promotes greater gains of strength
during strength training, but Creatine should not be taken immediately
prior to exercise.
There is usually weight gain within the first 3 days of
supplementation, due to water retention from the uptake of creatine in the
muscle. 3 grams of Creatine per day results in the same increase in
phosphocreatine, as does 20 grams per day (ACSM recommends the lower
dosage, and who is to argue considering the cost of the supplement).
Muscle changes from supplementation ‘do not mimic
adaptive changes’ and therefore cannot replace the value and necessity
of training
Pregnant or lactating women should not take creatine.
Use by adolescents is also not recommended, due to the lack of research
regarding these groups.
Creatine supplements are considered to be relatively
safe; however there is no definitive evidence as to the effects of long
term use - it has not been around long enough.
Vary food for a long life
A six-year study published in the Journal of the
American Medical Association has revealed that food variety is definitely
the spice of long life.
From 1987 to 1989, 42,254 women (mean age 61.1 years)
completed a food questionnaire by ticking which foods they had consumed at
least once a week. Twenty-three of the foods on the questionnaire were
identified as recommended foods (equivalent to the food pyramid or 5 food
groups we use), while the other 39 listed foods were not.
Participants were given a Recommended Food Score (RFS)
based on the number of recommended food items they consumed from the list.
One point was given per recommended item, with 23 being the maximum score
attainable.
Participants were followed up a median of 5.6 years
later. When comparing participants death rates with RFS’s in the years
between, the results showed that the higher the RFS, the lower the death
rate. Results revealed that women with the highest RFS had 30% lower risk
of mortality from all causes compared with those of lowest RFS.
So stick with the 5 food groups for more than your base
diet but do give yourself as much variety as you possibly can while
sticking to the pyramid.
Carpe diem’
From fast to slow - sadist golf?
PSC TAGGS... golf from The Haven
Wednesday, July 26 - Bangpra International Golf Club
(Two Man Scramble)
1st: Mark Campbell & George Jackson: 70, 65 net
2nd: Yasu Suzuki & John Kendall: 72, 65.2 net
3rd: Brian Kelly & Trevor Schirmer: 77, 68.2 net
The last time the gentlemen from The Haven played the
course at Bangpra was back on February 16, when they described the
conditions as “sorry”. On Wednesday, July 26, they returned to Bangpra
for a Two Man Scramble and are very happy to report that Bangpra is back
in good shape. Even the back nine greens, which had been recently
top-dressed with sand, were running fast and true.
Taking advantage of the good conditions were a couple
of golfers who know Bangpra well. George “One Ball” Jackson teamed up
with Mark Campbell and went out on the front with a blistering 34. They
finished the day with a scratch 70 and a net score of sixty-five for their
first win together as a team.
Just two tenths of a stroke behind were John Kendall
and Yasu Suzuki who shot an even par 72 off the stick and finished with a
score of 65.2 net. Those two tenths of a stroke were the result of Yasu
dropping from a handicap of 16 down to 15 after winning the week before.
Third place went to Brian Kelly and Trevor Schirmer with a net score of
68.2, edging out Graham Davis and Roland Piechoki.
Friday, July 28 - Siam Country Club (Bogey)
1st: Trevor Schirmer, 3 Up
2nd: Larry Ball, 1 Up C/B
3rd: John Kendall, 1 Up C/B
TAGGS played a Bogey competition at Siam Country Club
on Friday, the 28th of July. Trevor Schirmer whipped the course 3 up and
escaped the logjam that was forming up behind him.
Five golfers finished at 1up. Vic Cross, Peter Guasta
and Brian Kelly all received prizes, but every available spot on the
podium was already taken. Larry Ball was making his first appearance on
the leader board in over two years and he took the penultimate place in a
count back over John Kendall.
Siam was in great shape, but who was the sadist who scheduled the slow
greens of Siam two days after playing Bangpra?
John Kendall does the Pattaya Grand Slam
PSC Pattaya Golf Society with the Bunker
On Tuesday 25th of July, 30 golfers from the Pattaya
Golf Society went to Sriricha International Golf Club for a Stableford
competition. The large field was probably due to the fact that
Lewiinski’s and the Hare House have now set a maximum limit of 28 for
their handicap, so if your handicap is 29 to 36, the Bunker is the place
to play golf. Every Tuesday is competition day and every Friday is fun day
when different forms of competition are played. Plenty of transport
available and it leaves the Bunker at 10 o’clock for an 11 o’clock tee
off.
In lasts weeks division 1 competition, there was again
a tie for first place between Mr. Loy Mitchell and John Kendall from Costa
Rica. They both scored 37 Stableford points. It was especially sweet for
John as it completes a fine set of wins in Pattaya. He has won at the Hare
House, Lewiinski’s, Cafe Kronborg and now the Bunker. Well-done John. In
third place 4 golfers shared the honours. George Meigh, Paul Butler, Wilf
Latham and Mike Parsons all shot 34 points.
In division 2 Kevin Wilson again headed the leader
board with 36 points keeping up his consistent form of the last few weeks.
Joint second were Scott Haynes and Neil Griffin both with 35 points.
Nearest the pins were Peter Alcorn, Neil Griffin,
George Meigh and Brendan Pardoe.
Mr. Loy wins this months Bunker Bonus
Although he has been organising and running The Pattaya
Golf Society for quite a while now, Mr Loy Mitchell has never before won
The Bunker bonus, and so this was a nice prize to add to his many, many
competition wins. Over the month of July he finished 3 under par for his
total rounds, playing with a handicap of 17. Congratulations Roy and keep
up the good work.
Robert the Bruce does it again
PSC Golf from Lewiinski’s
Sunday 23 July - Green Valley (Stroke)
At Green Valley on Sunday the 23rd of July, Clive Bruce
