Around Town : Rayong
Ladies Circle
by Lesley Warner
I have been hearing some really good reports about the
Rayong Ladies Circle so I thought I would go along to one of their coffee
mornings and see for myself. The RLC has been established since November
1994 and as well as enjoying their famous coffee mornings, the ladies like
to organize a variety of other fund raising events. The membership
fluctuates between 80-200 ladies of different nationalities.
The
Rayong Ladies Circle helps many children
With the annual bazaar, coffee mornings, raffles,
donations and the charity tax, the RLC put on their own events and manage
to raise a considerable amount that they contribute to the welfare of
children. I asked one of the ladies, “what do you do with the money you
raise?” Helle Rantsen, who is in charge of welfare for the RLC, told me,
“We send 10,000 baht a month to the Bang Chang Hospital, which is for
powdered milk for HIV mums, and we built a playground on Phala Beach in
conjunction with Pattaya Sports Club.”
Once a month some of the ladies take a group of 15 to
20 children from the Huey Pong Institute to the beach for an afternoon of
swimming and lunch. They generally go to the Navy Beach at U Ta Pao, and
welcome other mums to join them.
As well as all the charity events, the RLC likes to
organize a few interesting trips for their members, to give them the
opportunity to see as much of Thailand as possible while they are here.
They also have some other fun events, whether it’s a show, a nice meal
or a game of tennis.
Making
friends at a “coffee morning”
The RLC actively supports the education fund, Eastern
Child Welfare Protection Institute (Huey Pong) at Maptaphut. One of the
ways they do this is at the annual Family Fun Fest, which this year is on
Sunday, 2nd December at Phu Luang, by Khun Tiew (who runs the King’s
Project). The funds raised at the Fest are distributed to help those
children most in need. For example, they manage to keep two children in
college education. It’s a fun day with loads of activities, a wide range
of vendors, baked goods, a garage sale, performances by local schools and
lots of other things to do and see. If you have any items you would like
to contribute they would be very welcome, if not just go along and enjoy
the day.

Thai Garden Resort enjoys success at
Bartender Contest

Chatchai the proud winner, behind him Prapatpong Pitakwong, the F&B
manager, next to him Weerachai Sutchatcha, the head-bartender and last but
not least, beautiful Surinda.
This year’s Bartender Contest at the Dusit Resort was a
great success for the Thai Garden Resort and its team. After many months of
hard training, Chatchai Promyano, a bartender at the Moon River Pub of the
Thai Garden Resort, was awarded with the second prize for his outstanding
show. He was the only one of all the contestants who juggled two bottles
while blind-folded. His assistant was lovely Miss Surinda Nettidor, a
waitress at the pub who performed a charming Thai dance with grace, and
later served the cocktails to the members of the jury.
A big celebration went on after the competition at the
moon River Pub, joined by general manager Rene Pisters.
BCCT members survey the Eastern
Seaboard
Last Friday finished for the British Chamber of Commerce
Thailand with a networking evening at L’Opera Restaurant. The day began
for members from Bangkok traveling to businesses on the Eastern Seaboard.

The BCCT group visited Waste Management Services, Bo-Win,
Auto Alliance (Thailand) Co. Ltd., GKN Driveshafts (Thailand) Ltd. and TRW
Steering & Suspension Co., Ltd. ending up back at L’Opera for a
networking evening. The aim of the day was for Bangkok members to explore
business opportunities in the area and to meet local and foreign business
people.
As with most networking evenings on the Eastern Seaboard,
the event was sponsored, this time by Elyo-H Facilities Management, Hemaraj
Land & Development Plc and L’Opera, with all enjoying the hospitality
and doing their utmost to network.
Results from this year’s Jester
Charity Drive already evident
5-year-old boy receives much needed eye
operation
Five year old Morachae (Film) has been given a new chance
in life thanks to the efforts of local businessmen and this year’s Jester
Charity Drive. The local businessman, who wished to remain anonymous,
requested assistance from this year’s Jesters Care for Kids Charity Drive
committee member and Shenanigans landlord Kim Fletcher for funds to help an
underprivileged family save their son from the daily agony of an eye tumor.
Kim
Fletcher (right), Film and Film’s mum say thanks in Shenanigans after the
operation.
The tumor in boy’s left eye had displaced his eyeball
from its socket and caused the boy to constantly tilt his head due to the
weight of the tumor. His mother explained that the tumor had grown very
rapidly causing persistent agony and the young Film (as he is known by his
family) would cry non-stop.
Once the go ahead was given, the task of finding a
hospital that would treat the boy’s condition with the least amount of
expenses was undertaken. Finally, after many phone calls, Phyathai Hospital
in Sriracha agreed to carry out the operation with the surgeon waving his
normal fees. The operation was carried out at the beginning of October with
the tumor being removed and Film receiving an artificial eye.
The scene at Shenanigans was an emotional one as young
Film and his family presented flowers to Kim for his assistance. Kim was
overjoyed to see ‘Film’. Kim said, “This is the sort thing you just do
to help someone have a chance at life.”
“I’d rather stay in the background and get things
done,” he added.
The local businessman, who had proposed the idea to Kim,
also felt the well of emotion in seeing the young boy smiling.
Thanks to the generosity of the Pattaya and the action of
the few, young Film now has a chance to lead a normal life. He is just one
of many that have been helped by Pattaya’s community - and there’s still
plenty that need it.
