Pasminco expands distribution network in Thailand Leading integrated zinc and lead producer Pasminco has expanded its Asian distribution network by establishing a warehouse in Bangkok. The warehouse in Bangplee, Bangkok was operational from October 1 with a capacity of 1,500 tonnes and will be added to a network that already includes facilities in Indonesia, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Malaysia. The five sites are managed by Pasminco in conjunction with TNT Logistics Asia. The Australian company, which is headquartered in Melbourne and has more than 4,000 employees, sees Thailand as a core market in its Asian business. “This facility will secure a seamless distribution system and will reduce the lead time of our Thai customers from 60 days to 5 days,” according to Andrew Hickey, Pasminco’s customer service manager. “We will be able to offer customers live inventory control and it will make us more competitive and more reactive to our customers’ needs,” he said. Pasminco has developed a supply chain that is focused on the needs of its customers for short cycle time deliveries to enable them to keep minimum inventories. This has been achieved through strategically placed warehouses that have been established in the Asian region to bring Pasminco products to the customers. These warehouses are re-supplied by a regular semi-dedicated liner shipping service using multipurpose vessels from Pasminco production sites in Australia. From these warehouses Pasminco can offer a full door-to-door delivery service coupled with any local customs clearance requirements. Pasminco’s customers can also utilize the facilities for collection of finished products for consolidation and shipment out of the Asian warehouses and back loading of finished goods to Australia in either containerised or break bulk form. In Thailand, scheduled vessels will unload shipments in Sriracha and TNT Logistics will control the inbound wharf clearance, warehousing, distribution and delivery on behalf of Pasminco. John Parkes, general manager of strategic accounts for TNT in Asia said, “Pasminco is an excellent example of how TNT can integrate a company’s distribution needs throughout Asia, creating an efficient distribution network that is backed up by market-leading technology so that companies are always aware of customers’ requirements at any given time.” TNT’s country general manager, Winfried Kiesbueye said, “This is yet another boost to our logistics business here in Thailand, where we have already doubled our business in the last 12 months. TNT’s strength in this sector is renowned internationally and we are now leveraging it in the Thai marketplace to great effect.”
