Pattaya has itself a very Merry Christmas

Christmas in Pattaya, despite the lack of snow, was a lively event this year, with Christmas decorations everywhere, festive activities held by Christian organizations, and the hotels and restaurants busy serving traditional Christmas fare.

The first thing that visitors to the city saw was the giant Christmas tree and Santa Claus and his reindeer that was erected by city hall on the median at the junction of Sukhumvit Road and Central Pattaya Road.

Throughout the city, hotels, restaurants and shops were decorated with multi-colored lamps, Christmas trees and holly, and festive music and Christmas carols were to be heard everywhere.

Saint Nikolas Church had its own Nativity and held a Christmas tree lighting ceremony that was well attended by Christian and Buddhist residents and visitors alike, with the gathering including Mayor Niran Wattanasartsathorn and his chief advisor Itthipol Khunplome. The evening began with Mass, after which the lights were switched on, creating a colorful festive spectacle on Sukhumvit Road.

Hotels and restaurants arranged festive menus and decorated their premises in traditional style, with lots of reds and greens, and cozy lanterns. Their staff joined in the festivities by wearing Santa and angel costumes, and wandering carol singers turned up at many of the venues, closely followed by Santa Claus bearing gifts.

There was a Christmas parade that wended its way from Banglamung District Office, along Beach Road to South Pattaya, and then through to Second Road, with the participants handing out toys and sweets to the children and calling out Christmas good wishes to everyone.

In short, Pattaya had itself a Merry Christmas.

The British community in Pattaya distributed more than 50 toys to children at the Ban Jing Jai Orphanage for Christmas.

Ian Mcdicken and Mrs Jitlada Thiankon led a group of 100 British friends to Soi Nernplabwan on December 23 to organize a Christmas party for the Ban Jing Jai children. Funds were also presented to orphanage director Piangta Chumnoi to use for a New Year party and other Ban Jing Jai activities.

Jitlada said that the group regularly offered meals to the Ban Jing Jai children on occasions such as Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, and for this time on Christmas Day. For many of the children it was their first Christmas party, and there was great excitement.

An amount of 100,000 baht was collected from members of the group to organize the Christmas and New Year parties for children. Money that was left over was presented to the orphanage for other expenses.

Piangta said Ban Jing Jai currently supports 55 orphans, and its daily running expenses such as the school and housing costs are high. The donated money will be used for the children’s benefit.
