Seventy Pattaya school children were given free eye exams for
Mother’s Day under a joint project by the YWCA Bangkok-Pattaya Center,
Beautiful Optical and Banglamung Industrial and Community Education College.
Children
found to have problems with their eyesight are shown the different typed of
glasses they can choose from.
Those who were found to need glasses will be fitted in September.
YWCA Chairwoman Nittaya Patimasongkroh said the project sprung from the
group’s Happy Family scholarship drive. During visits to the homes of
scholarship applicants, YWCA members often discovered children with poor
eyesight. So the group looked for partners who could donate both checkups
and spectacles to the needy children.
Seventy students from Banglamung School, Banglamung Nursery School, Pattaya
School 11 and Potisamphan School were selected by teachers.

Sattahip students reminded
of Thailand’s agricultural roots
“We’re going to get in there?”
Patcharapol Panrak
Fearful today’s teenagers are forgetting their country’s
agricultural roots, Sattahip school officials brought high school and
vocational students to the Royal Thai Navy’s Sufficiency Economy
Learning Center to study and appreciate the importance of rice growing
and buffalo farming in Thailand.
The group outing to the center on the grounds of Sattahip’s Recruit
Training Center demonstrated rice cultivation techniques and how, by
being self-sufficient, the country’s farmers built Thailand into the
country it is today.
Center guides explained that self-sufficiency is a philosophy espoused
by HM the King to keep Thailand strong even in the face of worldwide
economic recession. It applies not only to the family and community, but
as well to government officials who need to develop economic plans that
ensure the country’s economy is not placed at risk through
globalization.

Pattaya Cross Bay Charity Swim 2009 scheduled for November 15
Children to benefit from Rotary Club of Jomtien-Pattaya fundraiser
Contestants set out on the
short distance swim in last year’s event.
This year’s “Pattaya Cross Bay Swim” being held on
November 15 is looking to be a greater success than last year. The
organizing committee has now obtained support from Thai Airways, Dusit
Thani Pattaya, Hard Rock Hotel, DusitD2, Pattaya International Ladies
Club and last but not least Pattaya Sports Club. The Bangkok Hospital
Pattaya is supporting the event with an ambulance located outside the
Thai Airways office on Beach Road, as the swim committee always puts
safety first.
Pattaya City will benefit from the exciting and challenging event as the
party atmosphere at the finishing line welcomes the healthy and capable
swimmers with food and drink. The competitors may register by phoning
Graham Hunt-Crowley on 0813408852, or by email to
[email protected]. Those who wish to donate to the swim fund may
contact [email protected].
Last year, 97 swimmers completed the long and short swim and this year
organizers want to increase that number to 120. There are two courses,
the first setting off from Hard Rock Hotel covering a distance of 1 km
for those who wish to enter but do not have the ability to swim the long
swim. The second swim is 3.4 km and starts from the Sea Rescue offices
near Bali Hai pier and ends at the Dusit Thani Pattaya beachfront. The
time limit is 2 hours for this distance, so it is meant for the strong
swimmers who can demonstrate their ability to swim within this time. All
schools are welcome to enter teams.
The swimmers are expected to raise a minimum of 2,000 baht which will be
payable before the swim commences with the registration closing on
Saturday, November 7.
Organizers also want to obtain corporate sponsors who will benefit from
publicity of the event. Benefits will come from the exposure of their
company via the placing of the company logo on all publicity material
and on the web site.
Rotary aims to raise funds to support the continuing need for clean
water systems for schools, school uniforms, scholarships and other
important children’s funds.

Stalls’ status as of August 22nd:

to see who has already logged on and what they will be doing at the Fair
in their stalls. Given the usual 3000 to 5000 people that normally
attend our Fair, including lots of local expats, you might think that
the smatterings of food stalls booked so far will have a field day
between the 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. timings of our event.
So, if you would like to join in we urge you to book your stall soon. It
only takes a couple of minutes to sign up through our site and payment
is not due until the day of. Please visit www.care4kids.info.
5 million baht in sponsorship crested!
Even during these tough times many of you have been able to
dig deep and donate for the needy kids. Tough times like these mean even
tougher times for poor people, so your wonderful outpouring is
especially generous! Already we are thinking about what other projects
we can take on board this year.

By the way when we say we have topped 5 million baht, we mean to say
that we have done so by a mere 32 baht, that is, as in 5,000,032 baht
thus far. But no matter how you look at it, it’s still 5 million baht
reached. Ain’t it beautiful!
