Central Road slated for major disruption as PEA plans underground cables

Phasakorn Channgam

The Provincial Electric Authority is preparing to lay new underground power lines from Sukhumvit Road to Central Festival Pattaya Beach that will see Central Road ripped up both at its center and near one sidewalk.

Deputy Mayor Ronakit Ekasingh presides over a meeting to discuss the laying of new underground power lines from Sukhumvit Road to Central Festival Pattaya Beach.

The plan, unveiled at an Oct. 12 Pattaya City Hall meeting, will coincide with a new PEA electrical station slated to be replace the existing facility at Sukhumvit and Central roads. A high-voltage trunk line will be laid several meters deep in the center of Central Road and terminate on Second Road at the shopping mall.

A second pipeline for lower-voltage lines will be laid at a shallower depth under Central Road near the sidewalk.

Deputy Mayor Ronakit Ekasingh said the plan was a good one for the city in that other telephone and utility companies will be able to also move their cables underground, beautifying the city.

He said more study was needed, however, particularly to address the disruption to the public the street digging will cause.
