Dolphins sign-off with
comeback win over Sisaket

Staff Reporters
Pattaya United ended their season on a high note with a
come from behind 2-1 win over relegation threatened Sisaket FC at the
Nongprue Stadium last Sunday.
With all the Thai Premier League matches starting at the
same 4:30 p.m. kick-off time on the final day of action, the oppressive heat
of the mid-afternoon appeared to sap the energy of both teams as the game
began at a sedate pace with little goal-mouth action of note during the
opening 20 minutes.
The crowd were eventually given something to get excited
about on 22 minutes when United striker Tana Chanabut, playing in the place
of top scorer Ludovick Takam, weaved his way between a couple of Sisaket
defenders and sent his left foot shot just over the crossbar.
United again came close on 35 minutes but the woodwork
came to the rescue of the visitors as wing back Anucha Kitpongsri saw his
fierce left foot shot strike the outside of the post and rebound to safety.

Somewhat against the run of play Sisaket took the lead
just three minutes later and it came about through a misunderstanding in the
United defence that allowed Piyawat Thongman to run onto a through ball
unchallenged and slide the ball under the advancing Narit to put the
visitors one up.
United were unable to pierce the Sisaket defence for the
remainder of the half as they struggled for an equalizer before the break.
In the second half United began to show a bit more
urgency in the final third of the field and winger Santi Chaiyaphurk came
close to getting the Dolphins back on level terms in the 50th
minute but his fierce right foot shot flew just the wrong side of the goal.
Eventually the pressure from the home team told and
United forced a mistake from the Sisaket defence as Tana Chanabut was
allowed to run clear before squaring the ball to Theerawesin Seehawong, who
made no mistake from just 5 yards out to tie up the scores on the hour mark.
With United finally beginning to get on top, the match
was thrown into chaos with just 20 minutes left when one of the floodlights
failed to switch on. Despite the light being adequate from the other three
pylons, the referee and officials refused to allow play to continue until
the offending light had been fixed. This necessitated a frustrating delay of
nearly half an hour as both players and fans began to wonder if the game
could be finished on the night.
Eventually the floodlight was persuaded to co-operate and
play could continue and United wasted no time as they took the lead just 2
minutes after the restart when Chaiyaphurk fired a low free kick into the
back of the Sisaket net.
The Isaan outfit almost caught United napping from the
restart and had the ball in the Dolphins’ net through Sirisak Sangsomwong,
however the 23-year old midfielder had strayed offside in the build-up play
and the raised linesman’s flag meant the United players and fans were able
to breathe a sigh of relief once more.
The home team were able to play out the remainder of the
delayed second half without any further threats to their goal and thus
record their twelfth win of season and secure sixth place in the league
overall, just behind Bangkok Glass on goal difference.
United were due to play a Toyota Cup match against Thai
Honda on Wednesday, October 27 and we will bring you full details of their
progress in next week’s Pattaya Mail.
Elsewhere last Sunday, Muang Thong United were able to
celebrate being crowned Premier League champions for the second year in a
row. The Kirins had already secured the title with a goalless midweek draw
against SCG Samut Songkram, so their game against TOT Cat on Sunday at the
Yamaha Stadium had something of a celebration feel to it. Muang Thong had to
rally in the second half to come from behind and secure a 2-1 victory that
left them four points clear of runners up Buriram in the final standings.
The Chonburi FC ‘Sharks’ finished in third position after
a battling 1-1 draw at Osotspa that saw the away team play most of the match
with only nine men.
The Thai Premier League will return with a new season
starting next February with 18 teams. The three teams that finished in the
relegation zone of the TPL, namely Sisaket FC, Bangkok United and Army will
now go into the play-offs with the 4th, 5th and 6th placed teams from
Division 1. Only two of those teams will play in the Thai Premier League
next season.

Pattaya Sports Club helps Thailand badminton
The
overall winners at the Thailand National Junior Badminton Championships in
Chonburi pose for a group photo.
William Macey
I felt exhausted and I had only been sitting down
watching the finals of the Thailand National Junior Badminton Championships
which Pattaya Sports Club has been supporting for many years. The Governor
of Chonburi, Khun Witchit Chatphaisit, and the Vice President of The
National Olympic Committee of Thailand, Prof. Charoen Wattanasin, were also
very impressed. The standard was incredible and very fast for all the
singles and doubles groups. A standard has, this week, been set for them for
a Thai lady has risen to No. 32 in the world rankings.
Sixteen-year old Rachanok Inthanon, World Junior Champion
for 2009 and 2010, has this recently won the Vietnam Badminton Open and last
week, won the Indonesian Open Tournament, to rise from No. 68 to No. 32 in
the world rankings. She has just been awarded the IOC – Sport Inspiring
Trophy for the Young 2010. It’s certainly something for all the competitors
at the recent tournament in Chonburi to aim for. Well done Rachanock!

FC Nova play out thrilling draw with Pattaya City Reserves
MBMG Bangkok Casuals League Div. 2
FC Nova.
After the revious week’s league cancellation due to heavy
rain in Bangkok, FC Nova were back in action last Saturday when they took on
the newly formed Pattaya City Reserves in front of a large crowd at
Horseshoe Point.
To accommodate City’s first team match, an early kick-off
meant the game was played out in sweltering heat. And it was a testament to
both sides that they produced such a high octane clash in testing
conditions.
The first half was an evenly contested affair, City opted
to pack their midfield to stem the threat of Nova’ s dangerous midfield
pairing of Lee Homer and Mark McGowen. To the large part the tactic paid off
as no side was able to gain a foothold in the match.
The first clear cut opening came after 15 minutes;
Homer’s pinpoint cross found Bjorn Ellingsen who somehow managed to head
over with the goal beckoning. Chances started to come Nova’ s way and it was
Ellingsen once again who just failed to get a touch from a Ben Bryant cross.
However it was the home side who took the lead on the
half hour, a long ball over the top found the Nova back four napping and the
City striker ran through to coolly round keeper Todd Fox.
Nova continued to create chances and had a great shout
for a penalty waved away but it was the home side who went in at half time
one goal to the good.
The second half saw few early chances, however the game
really came to life in the final half hour. Nova’s Bryant latched on to a
Mark Dorey through ball and his mazy run was only ended when he was
cynically tripped by the City defender which resulted in a red card. Bryant,
a 17 year old student from St Andrews is a gem of a player and on Saturday
was arguably the best player on the park. However even with the player
advantage it was the home side who extended their lead when a shot from the
edge of the area beat Fox and found the bottom corner.
Nova had to dig deep and Coach Stuart Levy played his
trump card in bringing on 43-year old striker Nicholas Creasey. What Creasey
lacks in pace he more than makes up for it with his speed of thought and he
was the pivot for Nova to launch their attacks. Drifting in space between
the City midfield and their well marshalled defence, he was soon threading
balls though for Nova’s on rushing midfield.
They soon pulled a goal back when Stuart Maguire’s shot
from the edge of the area took a slight deflection and nestled in the back
of the net. And they were soon on level terms; Bryant once again tortured
the City full back before squaring the ball to Creasey, who deftly lifted
the ball over the keeper and into the net.
It made for a frantic final 10 minutes as Nova laid siege
on the City goal in search of the winner. However, it was the home side who
looked to have won the game with only minutes remaining. Nova’ s players
stood still as a corner was whipped in, and the unmarked City striker fired
home from close range.
But in the final seconds of the game another Nova attack
saw Andy Robinson square the ball to Nico Sippel who gleefully side footed
home for a share of the spoils.
Nova certainly deserved the point however City would be
disappointed at having let slip a two goal advantage. But the game was a
great advert for Division 2 football and a great testament to the strength
in depth of the Pattaya City Football Club that they could field such a
competitive reserve side and get a point against a very strong looking Nova
outfit.
One advantage of the early kick-off, was that Nova could
now indulge in their second favourite pastime, celebrating a well earned
draw in fine style at Jamesons Irish Bar.
This coming weekend FC Nova are home to the Scandinavian
Vikings at Mabprachan Lake, kick-off 4 p.m.

‘Nong Lak’ claims first pro tennis title
Tanacho Anuwan
Luksika Kumkhum of the Thai women’s national team
defeated Emma Flood from Norway 2 sets to nil at the Chang Thailand ITF Pro
Circuit tennis event held at the Siam Bayshore Hotel in Pattaya on October
16.
Laksika
Khamkam, left, and Emma Flood, right, pose with their trophies following the
women’s singles final.
It was the first professional win in the young career of
Kumkhum, otherwise known as ‘Nong Lak’, who until recently was ranked
outside the top 1,000 in the world but is a fast improving player and with
the win now moves up provisionally to No. 762.
Her opponent in the final, Emma Flood, is currently
ranked No. 771 in the world and she started the match the better of the two
players as she raced into a 4-2 lead in the first set. Kumkhum was able to
use her impressive forehand to break back however and tie the match up at
4-all, before going on to take the set at 6-4.
In the second set the Thai player broke her opponent’s
serve early and was able to run out an impressive 6-4, 6-3 winner in just 1
hour 40 minutes on court. She received a cheque for US$1,568 or
approximately 47,040 THB for her winning effort.
The doubles final saw Thailand’s Waratchaya Wongtianchai
team up with Chen Yi of Taiwan to face off against Jung Ting Fei (Taiwan)
and Lin Zho (China). Wongtianchai and her partner proved to be too strong
for their opponents on the day as they ran out 7-5, 6-2 winners to collect
the 20,000 THB prize money.
The Former Minister of Tourists and Sports, Sonthaya
Khunplom, and the Regional Marketing Manager of Thai Beverage Company,
Worapot Pongpitchaya- wattana, were on hand to present the prize money and
trophies to all the finalists.

Capeleris conquers the mud at Crystal Bay
PSC golf from The Bunker Bar
Monday, Oct. 18, Crystal
Bay - Stableford
Leaving the Bunker Bar in bright sunshine, the large
field of golfers was optimistic of a great day’s golf. Arriving at Crystal
Bay we discovered that there had been a massive downpour just prior to our
arrival and the management decided there would be no buggies allowed on the
course today. Walking down the first fairway we soon discovered why, with
thick mud oozing over the golf shoes and large tracks being made by the
caddies’ trolleys.
Scotty
Eaton.
Really the course should not have been open, but some
golfers were able to rise to the challenge. Visiting Aussie Con Capeleris in
particular produced a superb score of 41 points to win the A flight.
A word of warning to golfers planning to visit Crystal
Bay, one of our members had his mobile phone and wallet stolen from his
locker during the round. The attitude of the management was indifference,
giving the impression that this may not be a rare event.
A Flight
1st Con Capeleris (13) 41pts
2nd Gerry Cooney (10) 35pts
3rd Steve Coppell (12) 33pts
B Flight
1st Paul Edgar (17) 37pts
2nd William Macey (16) 36pts
3rd Peter Habgood (18) 35pts
Near Pins: Con Capeleris, Geoff Hart, Peter Habgood and Gordon Melia.
Wednesday, Oct. 20, St. Andrews - Stableford
Our last visit to St. Andrews before the high season
prices kick in produced a fine day’s golf. The course was in good condition,
and even the mowers were seen to be working on the fairways, for the first
time anywhere in recent weeks.
A slightly earlier start than usual, but the round
proceeded smoothly. Peter Habgood produced the best golf of the day, with 18
points on the front nine, but nearly threw it away on the back nine,
finishing ahead of the returning John McDonald and Roy Dayton.
1st Peter Habgood (18) 32pts
2nd John McDonald (9) 30pts
3rd Roy Dayton (20) 29pts
Near Pins: Gordon Melia and Ferdy(2).
Friday, Oct. 22, Mt. Shadow - Stableford
Given that we had played the sister course at Crystal Bay
a few days earlier in totally boggy conditions, what a pleasant surprise to
find the course here to be in excellent shape, and almost empty.
One group of golfers decided to take the route through
Sri Racha and found the road through Bangpra town to be impassable due to
flooding, eventually arriving at the course some 40 minutes after the first
group had teed off. Nevertheless, the round progressed smoothly for everyone
in good weather, with the greens as tricky and slick as ever.
Always a good test of golf, the course favours the lower
handicappers (more accurate) and on the day Scottie just beat Paul Edgar on
a count-back to take first place. Peter Habgood continued his recent good
form, taking third place from the unlucky Geoff Hart, also on a count-back.
1st Scott Eaton (3) 33pts
2nd Paul Edgar (17) 33pts
3rd Peter Habgood (18) 32pts
Near Pins: Dave Ashworth, Gordon Melia, Paul Edgar and Nile Sheehan(2).

Faber fires forty-pointer at Emerald
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Monday, Oct. 18, Century
Chonburi – Stableford
A deluge of rain all weekend here in Jomtien left us
unsure as to what to expect when we arrived at Century Chonburi. After many
discussions over the best route to take to the course off the 331, we tested
it out today: a u-turn on the flyover just past the 2nd
Shell garage is 8km to the course while the next exit on the 331 to Century
Chonburi and with abysmal road conditions is 15km, so almost a five mile
differential through the pineapple plantations.
On the
podium this past week: Burnie Sinclair, Georges Faber,
Pete Sumner, Chris Voller and Cully Monks.
Buggies were allowed out on the course today and there
were a few sodden areas but there was no ‘pick, clean and place’. There were
19 players out and with 20 points on the front nine and now playing off 5,
Kari Kuparinen won division 1 with 35 points. Chris Voller, now playing off
six after last week’s cut, was second with 33 points and Andy Baber beat
Georges Faber on a 14/12 back-nine count-back for third after they both came
in with 29 points.
There were a few moans regarding the greens being a bit
woolly and the semi-rough playing tough, but after the amount of rain
recently you can’t expect the greenkeepers to go out every day.
Twenty-six points gave Ben Findon third place in division
2, beating Mike Lewis 11/7 on a back six count-back after they both finished
with 14 on the back nine. After being cut 3 shots last week and playing off
23 now, Tom Novak was still in the reckoning, finishing second with 30
points and Burnie Sinclair won the division today with an amazing 38 points.
There were no ‘2’s in either division today so a carry
over to Emerald on Wednesday.
Now with a small influx of single handicappers who have
joined us recently, as from Monday, Oct. 25, division 1 is now 1-16 in the
‘2’s and nearest the pins and also the two divisional fun pairs games, and
division 2 is 17+. There will still be an equal 50/33 percent cut on the day
for the cards in the 2 or 3 divisions in the stableford.
Wednesday, Oct. 20, The
Emerald - Stableford
There were a few more players out today than there were
on Monday and as we arrived here we were told we could tee off straight
away, 40 minutes ahead of schedule. We tried to hold back as long as
possible as the groups had already been planned and a few had not yet
arrived.
The cut today was 5-16 in division 1 and 17 plus in
division 2 and with no roll on the fairways due to the recent rain this
would prove a good test for our players.
Joe Kubon crept in with 29 points for third place in
division 2, with Burnie Sinclair second on 31 and the winner today with 20
on the back nine was Ben Findon with 34 points.
In division 1 the Rioca boy was in third place with 34
points while Billy Hewitt was expecting to win with 37 points, but playing
off 13 and with an amazing back nine of 23 points Georges Faber took top
spot with A great round of 41 points.
Georges also birdied the 7th and
Pete Sumner the 15th to share two rollovers and
today’s pot in the ‘2’s competition. In division two there were three
rollovers to Green Valley the following week.
It was nice to see Keith Hector back in the field after a
couple of months.
Friday, Oct. 22, Eastern
Star - Stableford
The numbers are slowly creeping up on a Friday now and
there were six groups out today. With the heavy rain yet again the previous
night we expected a sodden course but to the contrary it was better than the
previous week, so yet again there was no relief on the fairways.
An even lower cut today of 6-14 in the premier flight and
Mikael Andersson and Rick Holmes lost out for third place on a count-back of
21 on the back nine to Rob Good after they all came in with 36 points. Pete
Sumner was second with 37 and Chris Voller, back in the frame, won with 38
points.
In division 2 Burnie Sinclair took the victory with 36
points and Mike Lewis beat Cully Monks on an 18/16 count-back for second
after they both tied with 33 points.
Once again there were no ‘2’s in division two but Mikael
Andersson and Chris Voller shared a rollover in division 1as they birdied
the 3rd and 13th respectively.
Near pins went to (Div. 1) Tom Herold, Rick Holmes,Colin
James and Ian Speirs, and (Div. 2) Joe Kubon, Jim Lane, Cully Monks and Rob
Schwab.

It’s Byrne’s Day at Phoenix
Phoenix Tuesday Golf Group
Mike Gerrard
Well at last the rains have moved from the daytime to the
night time, thus giving us a rain free day on Oct. 19. What a difference in
the temperatures. However, because the rain is still abundant during the
night we have to implement winter conditions and allow placing on the
fairways (hopefully?)
Winning
golfers and staff back at the Relax Bar.
Today we had to play the Ocean and Mountain courses (in
that order). This is not the best way to play a stableford at Phoenix
because both nines have the same stroke index numbers (all odd). The reason
this becomes a problem is because any player with an odd number handicap can
only claim his top shot on one of the nines.
This discrepancy only becomes a problem if the player is
in contention for a prize, so the best looking cards for the day have to be
rechecked at the presentation and duly changed (we don’t disqualify in our
group, we merely adjust -unless we find someone blatantly cheating and
that’s never happened yet).
As the headline suggests, it was the lovable Wexford
giant of a man himself, (Mr. Blarney) Hugh Byrne, who took all the honours
on the day. Not only did he win all the near pins but he triumphed in the
main competition as well with a superb 42 points. Little wonder that he also
took all the spoils in the little match-play game we had. For the rest of
the group it was a case of the seven dwarfs!
In second place with another good score was (Mr. Quiet)
Kristinn Helgason with 39 points and claiming third place with 35 points was
the ever consistent (Mr. Chirpy) Stuart Gordon.
Back at the Relax Bar the only thing left for the rest of
us after the main prizes was the lucky draws. The first one went to (Mr.
Glum) Peter Harris, who seems to win something in the lucky draw nearly
every week. The free beer went to (Mr. Happy) Phil Kington and the free
massage went to (Mr. New Swing) Clive Robinson.
The free beer and the free massage are donated by our
hosts the management of the Relax Bar every week.
Unfortunately, (Mr. Jack Russell) that would be myself,
along with (Mr. Spurs) ended up with bxxxxr all, except a good reason to get
pleasantly plastered by the end of the night.
Note: The end of this month sees the so called high
season in full swing and any non member of Phoenix who would like to join in
the fun can enjoy a reduced green fee at 1,000 baht as a guest of the
members within the group. The group is men only and 28 handicap maximum
allowance. Our first tee times are from 12.00 noon every Tuesday.
If you are interested please call me (Mike) on 087 091
7565 and I will be glad to welcome you to the group.

Love is in the air
101st PSC Members Monthly Open
In his first game with the PSC, Kari Kuparinen took all
the honours today, first of all by winning low gross, and then surprising
everyone when accepting his prize by proposing to his sweetheart. Happily
for us all (especially him) she accepted.
Kari
Kuparinen, right, receives his Low Gross prize from PSC Golf Chairman Joe
Mooneyhan.
This was certainly a first for Pattaya Sports Club
presentations and we wish good luck to the happy couple.
The tournament was played on Friday, Oct. 22, at Pattana
Sports Club & Resort, a fine facility offering 27 holes of quality golf and
one of the most impressive clubhouses to be found anywhere.
Dick
Warburg, right, was the B Flight winner.
With 84 registered golfers, 77 men and 3 ladies, we began
with a 2-tee start. As there was rain the previous night, ‘lift, clean and
place’ rules were in effect. We were blessed with good weather on the day
and a pleasurable day on the links was enjoyed by most. Again I mention that
ladies are welcome and we hope to see several newcomers next month at The
Emerald on November 19 to play alongside Thip Federspile, Phompimon Seesa
and Orawan Sodak, who represented the ladies this month.
William
Chang, left, took the C Flight top prize with 42 points.
Apart from Kari Kuparinen, other successes on the day
were recorded by Ed Wycoff who returned a net 69 to win the A Flight,
Richard Warberg with 39 points in the B Flight and William Chang with a
whopping 42 points in C Flight.
Birdie ‘2’s were chalked up by Ulf Bergen, Colm Mullen,
Seamus Cotter, Mike Gosden, Ed Wycoff, Mike Jefferys, and Terry Mangan with
two.

Diana Garden Resort once more hosted our presentation,
again providing a tasty buffet and generously offering happy hour prices to
PSC members. A tremendous facility for practicing your game as they offer a
new driving range and the great service we have come to expect thru the
years. Thanks to the staff for their service.

Sumner opens his account
IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar, Soi Buakhao
A fine, warm day, blue skies, an empty golf course ...
what more could the friends of the Pattaya Golf Society want on Tuesday,
19th October, as they travelled to Greenwood to play a stableford event over
the A and B nines.
The course was in excellent conditions despite the
ravages of the recent monsoon rains and a fine competition was in prospect.
Greenwood management insist on placing the white tees as far back as
possible in low season and the course was to play at all of its 6,400 yards,
and with little run scores would not be earth-shattering.
Sharing runner-up place were Phil Knight and fellow
Aussie Ray Jackson with 34 points and the winner was Pete Sumner, a
competent low handicapper, earning his first win with the group this visit
with 35 points.
Tony Thorne posted the day’s only birdie ‘2’, on B2.
Back at the presentation, Bangkok resident Michael Sim
rang the bell to celebrate avoiding the Booby Bevy and as a way of thanking
all the members for making him so welcome on golf days in Pattaya. The
golfers were also reminded of the forthcoming change to
Monday-Wednesday-Friday golf from 1st November and the imminent PGS Annual
Championship which is being held at Green Valley over two days on 10th and
12th November. Some fine golf is in prospect over the next few weeks.
Joy for Jones ... just
Bangpra beckoned for the Pattaya Golf Society on
Thursday, 21st October, and the group found the course very well prepared
despite the intense rains of the past few weeks. The course remained soft in
parts but the greens still retained their traditional pace and anything
above the hole was a knee-trembling nudge which bore success or despair in
equal measure.
As always accuracy is the secret to playing this course
and it was a surprise to see the better golfers having an off day as first
Paul McNally, followed by Pete Sumner and Masa Takano fell by the wayside in
their quest for the prize. Instead third place was occupied by Tony Thorne
and his 33 points was testament to his tenacity on the day. He was nudged
out of second place by Jim McNeill and his 34 points was a fine return for
the Englishman. The winner was Len Jones whose game held up well, accurate
and consistent off the tees and fairways, and only three putts on the final
green denied him the level par round he was seeking.
Pete Sumner and Wichai Tananusorn shared the ‘2’s pot for
their efforts on the second hole and the Booby Bevy went to Aussie Kevin
Pross for his low scoring round.
What a pleasure it was to be at Bangpra in the company of
good friends in excellent golfing surroundings.
Thorne wins close
encounter
A trip to Emerald was on the agenda for the Pattaya Golf
Society on Saturday, 23rd October, as the Soi Buakhao based IPGC group
enjoyed another fine golf day on a quality course.
Emerald has survived the seasonal monsoons well and the
fairways are lush, the greens very quick and consistent and areas of damage
and repair are clearly marked GUR. Having said that it is never easy to rack
up a good score at the course because Lady Luck has so much of a say but the
challenge is getting the best out of the course on the day.
In the stableford competition, Len Jones followed his win
on Thursday with another consistent round, posting 34 points for third
place, just one behind Gary Hartshorne’s creditable 35 point total. The
winner was Tony Thorne with 36 points, who found the greens to his liking
with his effective putting style. The only blemish on his card was an
aberration on the fifteenth in an otherwise excellent performance.
There were no birdie ‘2’s and no-one received the Booby
Bevy after a fine day.
The welcome was very warm, as were the new showers, and
the day at Emerald was as enjoyable as any spent golfing during the last
month or so.

5th Yasuo Suzuki (11) 34pts
6th Erik Donnestad (4) 34pts
While the Aussie raiding party from the West Coast were
away with the Outback making hay up in the north of Thailand, Alan
Pilkington made some down here in Pattaya as the sun began to shine again
and the seemingly constant rains stopped. Even though the day stayed dry,
the course was still suffering from the effects of the recent weather and so
preferred lies were the rule of the day, which just about equaled up the
rating as the fairways and rough were difficult to impossible.
Alan
Pilkington.
All these factors did not appear to trouble Alan as he
breezed round once more under handicap to claim what is becoming a regular
top spot on the podium.
Peter Sumner, who manages to play almost every day
amongst his incredibly busy holiday schedule, put in another good round to
claim second place by a shot from Ole Stamnes in third on level handicap.
Rod Howett just pipped Yasuo Suzuki for fourth spot by a
single shot with Erik Donnestad relegated to sixth by virtue of a worse
count-back of 19 to Yasuo’s 20.
There were no 2’s in the second division but Peter Sumner
made up for that by having two in the first division.
Before presenting the prizes The Doc welcomed new members
Kevin Pross, Dave Robinson and Raymond Cody and also welcomed back Allan
Heavey, Mark Armstrong and Shuichi Kodaka.

Greenwood - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Russell Gilroy (18) 36pts
2nd Ted Lodge (11) 36pts
3rd Shane Heavey (17) 35pts
4th Shuichi Kodaka (16) 32pts
5th Raymond Cody (19) 31pts
6th Russell Exley (7) 30pts
Another fine day greeted the hopefuls from Soi 13 as they
trekked up the new motorway to Greenwood, although with the new access to
the motorway it is a very easy run that now takes at least fifteen minutes
less to travel. The course was, as are all the others, still recovering from
the recent heavy rainfall in the area, which put a premium on long hitting
whilst keeping on the short stuff.
Russell
Gilroy.
Russell Gilroy continued with his fine run of form and
although always seeming to play near to his handicap he still manages to get
among the prizes regularly. On this day he needed a to win the count-back
over Ted Lodge, which he did by a margin of 18 to 16 to leave Ted in second
place.
Shane Heavey played the best round of his current visit
to take third place by a comfortable three shots ahead of Shuichi Kodaka in
fourth.
Raymond Cody got his first mention at the prize giving
with a gritty performance in fifth just a single stroke in front of Russell
Exley.
Alan Griffiths had the lone 2 in the first division and
Shane Heavey slotted one in to sweep the second division including the roll
over.
Back at The Haven new members were welcomed in the form
of John Barry, Marty Garnet, Andrew Winn, and Nigel Jenkinson and there were
also welcome backs for Vincent Gras, Alan Griffiths, Trevor Edge and Ted
Lodge.
Friday, Oct. 22, The
Emerald - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Alan Pilkington (10) 37pts
2nd Russell Exley (7) 36pts
3rd Russell Gilroy (18) 34pts
4th Bob Lamond (5) 34pts
5th Andrew Winn (17) 33pts
6th Trevor Schirmer (14) 33pts
For the second time in a week Alan Pilkington stood on
the top level of the podium after a solid round of golf over the heavy
ground at Emerald, where the going was soft to sodden. This result turned
out to be the sixth time in three weeks that Alan has bettered his handicap
during which time he has seen his handicap reduced by two to its lowest
historical level and can now boast a definite single figure handicap.
Russell Exley took second place with a well played level
par round to keep Russell Gilroy in third place as he in turn beat off the
challenge of Bob Lamond with a better count-back of 12 to 11 on the back six
after they had tied the inward half on 16 points each.
Andrew Winn took his first mention out of The Haven as he
also won a count-back over Trevor Schirmer, with exactly the same scores, to
claim fifth.
There were no 2’s in either division to leave two huge
roll overs for the next competition.
Before the presentations there was a welcome back for Bob
Lamond and a farewell for Fred Chadwick and Tony O’Neil.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven
group you can contact mobile 084782 4582 or call in to the hotel at 185 Soi
13 between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All transportation
to the course is arranged and you do not need to sign up prior to the day,
but you should be there by 8.30 on Mondays, Wednesday, Fridays and Sundays
on the days you wish to play. A schedule of courses to be played can be
found on our web site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Faber strolls home at Green Valley
PSC golf from the Caddy Shack
Wednesday, Oct. 20,
Treasure Hill – Stableford
Sixteen players made the long trip out to Treasure Hill
to tackle this always testing course off the white tees.
Conditions were particularly awful and the scoring
reflected that with John Dean and Gary Ritchie recording the best rounds of
the day with 33 points each in the top flight, with John just edging the
count-back.
In the B Flight, Helmut Hebstreit came home with 32
points for the win and was followed in second spot by Ian Colvill on 30.
Trevor Fitzsimmons and Gary Ritchie recorded the only
birdie ‘2’s of the day.
A Flight
1st John Dean (10) 33pts
2nd Gary Ritchie (7) 33pts
B Flight
1st Helmut Hebstreit (13) 32pts
2nd Ian Colvill (15) 30pts
Friday, Oct. 22, Green Valley - Stableford
A round dozen golfers assembled at our regular course at
Green Valley to play a stableford round off the white tees. Once again the
course was too wet to allow carts so the troops were forced to walk.
George Faber had a great round to win the day with a fine
39 points off his 13 H/cap. Vincent Smyth took second spot with an even par
36 and Allan Bellec was third just one point further back.
The ‘2’s club was visited today by Vincent Smyth and Les
Hall

Allan Bellec (17) 35pts
Note: The Caddy Shack is situated in Soi 8
Threppasit (follow the soi to the well appointed old English style
hotel/restaurant/bar). We play golf twice a week, Wednesday and Friday until
the punters return then Monday will also be added. We can also arrange golf
outside these days and have a notice board with future venues and an entry
list. Email [email protected] for more information.

‘Golden Oldies’ on the march
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
Tuesday’s top three with one of Bert’s helpers, second right.
Derek Brook
Tuesday, Oct. 19, Green
Valley – Stableford
This was quite exciting, going to Bert’s without it
pouring down and driving up to Green Valley without the windscreen wipers
on, this was most surely going to be a great day. I had been told the day
before that Green Valley was wet, but the sun was out so what could go
wrong?
We pulled up at the ‘Bag Drop’ area and I jumped out of
the car and told the Caddy Master to put my clubs on a cart while I got
changed. Then the day hit a big snag as the man told me there were no carts
on the course, not even on the cart paths.
At this point several of the golfers had real decisions
to make as basically as you get older the aches and pains tell you to take a
cart. My knees tell me and walking a full round makes the old back ache.
Still, on the day all the ‘Goldie Oldies’ decided to walk.
On the first tee I ordered the ambulance and set off. We
will not go into the next four hours, suffice to say the group behind said I
was quicker walking than in a cart, but we all made it, even if today I am
stiff as a board.
The course was not really that wet and the greens were in
quite good condition, so the round was quite pleasant, except for the fact
that there are very few sit downs on the way around. I spent more time in
the drink stops than usual.
Back at Bert’s the scores were on the board and they were
not very good, but good enough to win. The winner with 35 points was Frank
Pilkington, in second with 32 points was yours truly, and in a three way
count-back on 31 points, Don Carmody came third, Mick O’Meara fourth and
Dick Warberg just lost out.
Near Pins were claimed by Brian Parrish, Dick Warberg and
Alain Bellec
There were a lot of tired golfers at Bert’s and his
‘Happy Hour’ came in very useful.
To finish one point of notice is that my legs came up in
a violent red rash between the top of my socks and my knees. I am at present
applying oodles of cream but it does not look very pretty but now very
purple. I suspect the rain has brought out something in the grass, maybe
chemicals used on the course and I spoke to Frank Pilkington who also has a
similar problem though not as bad as mine. I suggest long trousers are
needed at present if you have any skin problems whatsoever. T.T.F.N.

SMS gets the message
PSC golf from The Cafe Kronborg
The Drut
Monday, Oct. 18, Khao
Kheow - Stableford
Twenty-three golfers departed from the Kronborg on Monday
morning and arrived at the course in heavy rain. With conditions looking
bleaker than a solution to the world monetary crisis, we held off booking in
until the Admiral had surveyed the situation.
Graham
Buckingham, left, and Stu Rifkin, right,
make a sandwich out of Dave ‘The Admiral’ Richardson.
The Admiral, as per usual, was spot on with his
calculations as the weather cleared and the first group teed off at 0955
hours and completed the journey in 5 hours, which included a couple of drink
stops.
Today we played the B and C nines from the white tees and
despite the fairways being very soggy and no carts allowed on them the
scores were good. The message here is, winners adapt.
The greens drained well and putted truly whilst further
rain stayed away. Everyone is aware that brand new golf balls are water
magnetic. Well at Khao Kheow so are used ones!
We welcomed from Australia, Fred Cuypers, Perth, Dave
Roberts, Sydney and Jerry Dobbs, Queensland.
In the A flight Stu Rifkin, despite not scoring on the
first hole of the day, handed in a great 41 points to finish in first place.
Owen Walkley, who is in good form, had 40 points for second whilst Mike
Gosden scored 37 points to take third place. Despite lurching down the
stretch like a tramp steamer in the Bay of Biscay, Paul Avery hung on for 32
points and fourth spot.
In the B grade Graham Buckingham staged the biggest
comeback since Old Rowley at 100/1 was successful in the 1940 Melbourne Cup.
Graham’s nines were 13 and 22 for a total of 35 points. In second place was
Mike Winfield with 34 points, beating Ken Bernek on a count-back, also on 34
points, and Ronnie Ratte with 33 points finished fourth.
Long putts were scored on B9 by Jerry Dobbs and Niels
Hansen on C9.
Nearest the pins went to Owen Walkley B3 and Stu Rifkin C8.
A flight (0-17)
1st Stu Rifkin (14) 41pts
2nd Owen Walkley (15) 40pts
3rd Mike Gosden (10) 37pts
4th Paul Avery (10) 32pts
B Flight (17+)
1st Graham Buckingham (23) 35pts
2nd Mike Winfield (20) 34pts
3rd Ken Bernek (18) 34pts
4th
Ronnie Ratte (29) 33pts
Possibly due to being sighted (no it wasn’t by the
scribe) in Walking Street at 0330 hours on October 18, Jerry Dobbs claimed
the coveted Compass Cap. Jerry, who despite having a swing like an arthritic
pickpocket, reckoned he was dead unlucky as he considers a birdie a hot
streak.
Deefa the Dog relished the day and duly devoured enough
money to balance the budget of a small island in the Pacific. Thanks to all
those who so graciously contributed as the donations will go to charity.
Thursday, Oct. 21, Phoenix
–Monthly Mug/Stroke
Nineteen golfers played the Lakes and Ocean nines today,
the first group teed off at 10:30 hours and completed the round in four
hours and forty minutes.
The weather was fine, the course was in excellent
condition and the greens, which were evenly paced, putted truly.
Prior to tee off Paul Avery was heard to comment, “24
cans in a slab, 24 hours in a day, what a coincidence.” Kronborg golfers are
aware of life’s idiosyncrasies.
Today we welcomed Patrick Poussier from France.
Considering stroke events, the average golfer and good
scores are on the same wave length of compatibility as Rottweilers and
nervous postmen, it was pleasing to see some good rounds played.
The Monthly Mug was won by Mike Allidi with a superb 71
off the rod for a net 68. Mike hit 12 greens in regulation figures, had one
ferret (a chip in) and only missed one fairway for a display of golf not
often seen with The Kronborg. The scribe had the opportunity to watch this
round at close quarters and was suitably impressed.
In the A flight, Per-Olav Baarli a net 70 to pip Mike
Gosden on 71, with Bill Plath scoring 72 for third place.
In the B flight Ronnie Ratte was the winner with a net
73. In second place was Frank S. Pilkington on 74 and the consistent Ken
Bernek handed in a 76 for third spot.
Monthly Mug
Mike Allidi 71 (3) net 68
A Flight (0–16)
1st Per-Olav Baarli (16) net 70
2nd Mike Gosden (10) net 71
3rd Bill Plath (16) net 72
B Flight (17+)
1st Ronnie Ratte (29) net 73
2nd Frank Pilkington (17) net 74
3rd
Ken Bernek (18) net 76
In a display of ineptitude rarely seen outside something
organised by a government department, a group in our competition after 10
holes was one and a half holes behind and made no attempt to make up the
lost ground. Slow players are selfish players and as a result Deefa the Dog,
who as usual was salivating like a herd of turkeys in a locust plague, had
his ravenous appetite well and truly satiated by this group and thanks go to
those who contributed.
Other players also complimented the charity collection
with their donations for minor golfing indiscretions.
As the custodian of the coveted Compass Cap was cruising
to Kanchanaburi with colleagues, the craving coffers came up, well short. It
will return next Tuesday at Plutaluang.
Bjarne’s Birthday 4-Person
Scramble
Bjarne’s traditional birthday 4-person scramble is being
played at Plutaluang on November 4 so please sign up and make it a great
day. Big thanks go once again to Bjarne and his team at the Cafe Kronborg
for their continued support which is much appreciated.

Byrne lights up sodden Green Valley
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s
Sunday, Oct. 17, Green
Valley - Stableford
1st Andrew Byrne (11) 37pts
2nd Bob Newell (7) 35pts
3rd Yui Bietry (13) 34pts
Near Pins: No 4 Jan Eriksen; No 9 Chris Davisson;
No 12 Richard Mitchell; No16 Francis McClarren.
The size of the field might have been impacted by the
seventh anniversary of Christy Knight’s house warming party the night
before, plus the dreadful conditions. They were that bad that ‘The Donkey’
at last conceded “lift clean and place” on the fairway might improve our
enjoyment!
Andrew
Byrne.
So no carts allowed on the course, but Ireland’s Andrew
Byrne’s play was certainly not affected. Andrew stole the show and top spot
on the podium with a splish-splashing 37 points. Bob ‘Seamless’ Newell, who
stated last week that he was finished with the game, came out of retirement
to gather the silver two shot’s adrift. I don’t know why he bothers. Yui
Bietry chased Bob home, a further shot back.
Monday, Oct. 18, The
Emerald - Stableford
A Flight
1st Derek Walsh (9) 38pts
2nd Colin Davis (15) 34pts
B Flight
1st Pat Feeney (21) 43pts
2nd
Tom Kelly (22) 32pts
Hey, who is that man? That was the query as Ireland’s Pat
Feeney hung an 11 point gap on the balance of B Flight which was led by Tom
Kelly. That query changed to cheers as Pat’s play throughout his stay in the
‘Land of Smiles’ verified his 21 handicap. So he just had a good day, well …
a great day off the 6.024 configuration. Congrats to Pat!
It was a similar story in the senior flight as Derek
Walsh, no stranger to the pay window, continued his purple patch by posting
a very impressive 38 points for top spot. Colin ‘The Donkey’ got back to his
count-back winning ways with a decision over the unlucky Richard Mitchell.
Pat Feeney added a ‘2’ to his winnings along with Fergus
O’Brien.
Wednesday, Oct. 20, St.
Andrews - Stableford
A Flight
1st Yui Bietry (13) 37pts
2nd Colin Davis (15) 35pts
3rd Francis McClarren (13) 35pts
B Flight
1st Keith McLachan (18) 37pts
2nd Mike Craighead (18) 36pts
3rd
Jim Elphick (25) 36pts
The lure of impeccably manicured St Andrews and the
favorable low season prices attracted a strong field as always, but that
didn’t prevent Mike the ‘Mechanic’ Craighead and Jimmy ‘Two Shots’ Elphick
from finishing on the B Flight podium. However, the top performance and
co-match winner was Keith McLachan with a fine 37 points.
Yui Bietry, who managed to equal the best score of the
day, led the top division and so secured co-match winner. ‘The Donkey’,
Francis McGlacharan, Francis Goyons and Michael Goggins were all locked up
in a count-back with the old ‘Donkey’, who as usual didn’t give any quarter
to his friends, taking the runner up spot.
Thierry y Petremont and Joe ‘Sat Nav’ Tynan split a tidy
‘2’s pot.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi
1, Beach Road Soi 13/3 near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with
us just pop in, and add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764.
Transport is provided.

Arnold wins by eight
PSC golf from the Three Sisters Bar
A sparse showing this 20th of October at the Pattaya
Country Club for our regular weekly outing.
Winner
Arnold van de Graaf, left, with runner up Richard Hall.
Last week’s excuse of “no carts on the fairway” no longer
applies. The fairways were reasonably dry, carts were allowed and weather
wise it was very nice. Larry Emerson waited for some promised “no-shows”,
caught up with a foursome and finally passed them before he fell asleep
waiting.
Back at Caddy Shack II, Herbie Ishinaga showed up to
provide the usual snacks and hot dogs. A tally of the cards again found
Arnold van de Graaf at the top with 38 points followed by Richard Hall with
a 30. Several regulars will be in town for the next few weeks so a good show
is expected on 27 Oct when the Monthly Trophy will be up for grabs.
Heddle hits top form at Khao Kheow
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar
Joey’s column
Monday, Oct. 18, Burapha -
Stableford
With many of the Outbackers away in Chiang Mai, the
fields for most of the venues this past week were relatively small and
Burapha C & D off the whites was no exception, with just 13 Outbackers. The
scoring was very ordinary, probably as a result of the difficult wet
conditions as Trevor Whelan’s 33 points was enough to win the day.
John Cunningham took second with 30 points ahead of three
others with same score; Steve Budrys, Bob Lindborg and Jim Brackett.
We were joined by a large contingent of Aussie boys just
out for a hit, namely Don Mannings, Reg Taylor, Joe Lada, Ian Lavington,
Colin Haddock, Bill Marshall and Leon Mahoney – and welcome to all of them
today and for the next couple of days.
There was only one ‘2’ from John Cunningham.
Our thanks go to Tony McDonough who kindly got the field
away on the day and to Nigel who collated the results.
1st Trevor Whelan (18) 33pts
2nd John Cunningham (6) 30pts
3rd Steven Budrys (13) 30pts
4th Bob Lindborg (19) 30pts
Monday, Oct. 18, Green Valley - Stableford
A very soggy Green Valley greeted the 10 Outbackers at
their regular alternate Monday venue on a day when no carts were allowed
anywhere on the course.
The scoring was unusually poor with even the two low
markers, Mark & Ian, struggling in the conditions, however, their 30 points
apiece was enough to win with Mark getting the nod on count-back, with Kev
Reid one point further back in third.
Our thanks go to Pottsy, who ran the day for us, although
he hasn’t been seen since as he commented, “When was the last time I walked
a course?” - He must be still recovering.
1st Mark McDonald (3) 30pts
2nd Ian Heddle (4) 30pts
3rd Kevin Reid (13) 29pts
Tuesday, Oct. 19, Pattaya C.C. - Stableford
Twelve was the number of regular Outbackers, organized by
Corporal Cannon, who today played at the local Pattaya Country Club on a
fine day with no rain! The course was still rather wet in places so ‘pick
and place’ was in force though by the end of the round was not necessary.
There was a lot of work going on at the course to prepare it for an
up-coming Thai major tournament, however there were still some greens that
were a little ‘suspect’!
In addition to the 12 in the competition, the visiting 7
Aussie lads, as with yesterday at Burapha, played behind us and enjoyed
their day.
There were no ‘2’s so it was 1 to 4 places.
In the top spot was PCC member Alan Pearce (21) with 39
points. Second was ‘local lad’ Owen Lloyd (11) with 37, and Sid Ottaway (24)
was third with 35. Count-back was required to determine fourth, with Frank
O’Neill (20) and Tony McDonough (13) both having 30 points, with Frank
coming 4th with a better back 9 - just!
The Outback play at Pattaya Country Club each Tuesday
with a tee time of 09.30.
1st Alan Pearce (21) 39pts
2nd Owen Lloyd (13) 37pts
3rd Sid Ottaway (24) 35pts
4th Frank O’Neill (20) 30pts
Wednesday, Oct. 20, Phoenix - Stableford
It was Corporal Cannon who was the organiser again today;
clearly he is out for promotion!
It was a lucky 13 Outbackers who made the brief trip to
the delightful Phoenix Golf Club which had benefited from the lack of rain
over the past few days. Whilst the course was not very busy it was still
rather slow, as a couple of the dreaded 5 balls again held up the field!
There were no ‘2’s again today so it was 1-5 on the
podium.
Coming in with 34 points, which was enough to earn him
top place, was Don Pavlovic (11) and second was regular Outbacker, Bob
Lindborg (19) on 32.
Third and fourth was decided on count-back with both Jim
Payne (26) and Neville Steward (20) having 31 points with Jim piping Nev by
just 1.
Final place went to Bill Peach (20) with 30 points.
1st Don Pavlovic (11) 34pts
2nd Bob Lindborg (19) 32pts
3rd Jim Payne (26) 31pts
4th Neville Steward (20) 31pts
5th William Peach (20) 30pts
Friday, Oct. 22, Khao Kheow - Stableford
After a hectic week in Chiang Rai & Chiang Mai, General
Jack returned to the local golfing scene to have his eighth round of golf in
nine days, this time at Khao Kheow. He was joined by 17 other Outbackers to
play the C & B nines of this spectacular course. The fairways were still
soggy but the greens were in great condition and weather wise, it was a
beautiful day with a clear sunny sky, a sight not seen for some time – roll
on the dry season!
Ian Heddle shone out there, with a stunning 72 gross and
40 points to spread-eagle the field by eight points, with the man that beat
him on count-back last Monday at Green Valley, Mark, taking second with a
mere 32. Third went to Bob Finley on a count-back from George Bishop, both
with 31.
Jack, who was completely worn out and troubled by
problems with Phoenix, failed to post a score.
Welcome back to Tony Briggs and also to Kevin Pross, Ray
Cody and Dave Robinson, playing with the Outback for the first time.
There were three ‘2s’ from Mark McDonald, Paul Bourke and
Kevin Pross.
Our thanks again to Nigel for his help this week and
those who are down to play in the 3rd Thai Garden
Resort Cup against the German-Swiss Golf Club this Friday 29th
Oct, please note that the venue has been changed to Greenwood at 11 a.m.
with a two tee start.
1st Ian Heddle (4) 40pts
2nd Mark McDonald (3) 32pts
3rd Robert Finley (12) 31pts
4th George Bishop (15) 31pts
5th Trevor Whelan (18) 30pts
Note: The Outback Golf Bar is situated about 6km
from Sukhumvit Road along Soi Siam Country. All are welcome to come and join
us for a beer and a hit. Just call in and put your name down on the list or

Ron wrestles the title from General Jack
Outback Golf Bar Chiang Mai Challenge
Day 1, Monday, Oct. 18 -
Royal Chiang Mai
We are now into our fifth Chiang Mai Challenge, which
take place twice a year in March & October, and have become not only a great
golfing experience but also a popular social outing with many excellent
restaurants and bars together with the wide choice of tourist activities to
be found here in Chiang Mai.
A happy
Barry Chadbourn after his hole in one on the third hole at Royal Chiang Mai.
Twenty-six more flew up on Sunday to meet up with the 26
Outbackers and friends who were already here, making a total of 43 golfers
competing for the trophy, currently held by Jack Moseley.
At 8.15 Monday morning, we set off from the Porn Ping for
the 45 minute drive to the Royal Chiang Mai golf course, it was a pleasant
but cloudy morning, with no sign of any rain. Upon arrival, with the green
fees prepaid, it was just a matter of paying for your cart, changing, and
off down to the start.
Although there was a group from Taiwan due to tee off in
front of us, the starter gave us, like them, a two tee start and we were all
away before our scheduled 10 o’clock tee time.
This is a lovely natural course with many streams and
lakes to catch the errant ball but unfortunately the greens were not up to
scratch, which the marshal said was caused by the consistent rain over the
past three weeks, however, one could doubt whether that was entirely
correct. It was an unpredictable shame that spoilt the course for many of
the guys and girls but whether the course gets voted off the next tour,
remains to be seen.
From
left-right: Jack Moseley, Bob Maloney, Chris Dopp, Ron de Groot & Bill
Hornick.
Bill Hornick shot the top score of the day with his 39
points to win Div A by five, from the defending champion, Jack, whilst Norm
Cheetham, hot-foot from Perth, was the only other player to beat handicap
with his 37 points to take Div C. Other notables were Chris Dopp & Joe
Mooneyham, winner and runner up in Div B, both with 35 points and the
Sugarman taking second in Div C with 36.
Div D was won by Dick Hobson with the surprisingly low
score of 33 and the ladies fared even less well with the 30pts from Jum
being enough to win.
When we come away on these trips, we always run a three
day accumulator for the ‘2’s, so on this trip was a total of 8,600 baht up
for grabs. Well needless to say the news of a hole in one always travels
fast and the man that bagged it, Barry Chadbourn, with a perfect ace, on the
third hole, witnessed by many, as there were two groups on the tee. So we
had to start another ‘2’s pot. Chad is a regular player at Pattaya Country
Club and two of his regular playing partners there, Norm Martin and Geoff
Moodie have also had hole in ones in the last two weeks!
Div A (0-12)
1st Bill Hornick (12) 39pts
2nd Jack Moseley (12) 34pts
3rd Brian Holden (7) 32pts
Div B (13-15)
1st Chris Dopp (14) 35pts
2nd Joe Mooneyham (14) 35pts
3rd Bob Green (13) 34pts
Div C (16-18)
1st Norm Cheetham (16) 37pts
2nd Sugar Ray Handford (17) 36pts
3rd James Bryan (18) 35pts
Div D (19+)

2nd Esther Kaufmann (21) 30pts
Day 2, Tuesday, Oct. 19 - Alpine Resort
Nestled in a valley this course, which was modernised a
few years back, still retains a special charm but it is probably easier now
with its generous fairways than it was before the changes were made. The
greens were fabulous, making putting a delight and apart from the starter
deciding to put two groups out in front of us at the turn, it was another
great day out.
The top scores went to the Aussie raiders and although we
had tried hard to curtail their onslaught by making handicap cuts from
previous results, there was nothing that could be done to stop their
advance.
Wayne Waywood set the pace in the highly competitive ‘B’
division with an outstanding 42 points (to receive an immediate H/cap cut
back to 13), followed in by Bob Green, who has just started to find his
form, with 40 (Bob also receiving a cut back to 12). Regular Outbacker,
Bruce Milner took third with 39, whilst the consistent Chris Dopp and Joe
Mooneyham didn’t even make the podium with their matching 37’s.
Another great round from Ron de Groot (Aussie raider),
who scored 40 points to win Div C by four from Don Lehmer (36pts) and Barry
McIntosh (35pts) enjoying his first tour with the Outback. Ron also
receiving a cut, back to H/’cap 17.
Defending champion, Jack, who couldn’t hit a green with
an iron from anywhere, once again produced his magic around the greens to
keep his chances alive, with a fighting 36 points to take Div A from Steve
Mann, whose driving has been completely off and Brian Holden, both with 35.
Dick Hobson scored one less than at Royal Chiang Mai but still won Div D
with the surprisingly low score of 32 points but this time matched by his
good mate Joachim, whilst Geoff Doody found the frame again with his 29.
Suzi Lawton found the right gear at last to give her
overall chances a boost, with an excellent 40 points to comfortably win the
ladies division by seven from yesterday’s winner, Jum on 33.
There were five ‘2’s for the restarted pot coming from
Jack Moseley, Bob Green, Chris Dopp, Rod Crosswell and Suzi.
Div A (0-12)

Day 3, Thursday, Oct. 21 - Chiang Mai Highlands
We knew that Chiang Mai Highlands had had its fair share
of rain and talk buzzed around as to whether we would be able to play today
and how would things stand if we could not. As we neared the course, the
mountains were shrouded in low cloud but it was not raining. Derek, the
Manager, said the course had stood up quite well and although the fairways
were soggy, the greens were fine.
Derek offered a split start with three groups starting on
the 16th, the remainder as normal from the first; the
decision was met with a little opposition but with the unpredictable
weather, it was the right thing to do to try to get everybody round as
quickly as possible. In the end it didn’t really work, as our front groups
were following another small tour, who had decided to play from the blues
and had chosen to walk! So the play was slow and the groups from the
sixteenth caught up with our tail.
Bob Maloney (41pts) shot the best round of the day to win
Div B, ahead of Chris Dopp with 39 and John Cogan got the better of Ron de
Groot on count-back in Div C, both shooting 39’s.
Jack and Pat also shot 39’s in Div A, Jack with the
better back nine; whilst the amazingly low score of just 31 from Chad, took
him by surprise, as he was declared the winner of Div D from Geoff Doody in
second with 30.
Kathy at last came good to win the ladies division with
36 points, two ahead of Jum who had a good week but did not played her best
golf.
There were another nine ‘2’s to add to the five from
Alpine Resort and they came from John Cogan, Joe Mooneyham, Pat Regan, Dick
Hobson, Ron de Groot, Jack Moseley, Kathy Doody & Bob Maloney had two.
Div A (0-12)
1st Jack Moseley (12) 39pts
2nd Patrick Regan (11) 39pts
3rd Bill Hornick (11) 37pts
Div B (13-15)
1st Bob Maloney (13) 41pts
2nd Chris Dopp (14) 39pts
3rd Bruce Milner (13) 36pts
Div C (16-18)
1st John Cogan (17) 39pts
2nd Ron De Groot (17) 39pts
3rd Don Lehmer (18) 33pts
Div D (19+)
1st Barry Chadbourn (19) 31pts
2nd Geoff Doody (20) 30pts
3rd Eddie Delaney (27) 29pts
Ladies
1st Kathy Doody (18) 36pts
2nd Jum Karagit (20) 34pts
Overall Results
Back in the clubhouse, Jack and Bob were frantically
working out the results that even with the help of a computer, took some
time to do. There were also all the fines to get through before eleven of
the Outbackers had to leave for the airport at 5 p.m.
The highest finishing lady received an Outback silver
ball marker with a rose engraving lovingly crafted by Fidge Button and Naga
trophies were awarded for the last lady (Noodle with 87pts) and the last man
(Alan Campbell with his 66). If you haven’t seen these trophies before
(they’re an Aussie thing) basically they are filled with beer and the ladies
trophy has a handle shaped like a man’s thingy and the man’s has a boob at
the front.
So to the overall result, which was decided on count-back
for the first time, the win going to Ron de Groot with 111 points overall;
second was Chris Dopp on the same score with third place being shared
between Bob Maloney, Bill Hornick and Jack Moseley, all with 109.
Finally, on behalf of the Outback, it is a pleasure to
put these trips together and we thank you for your appreciation and for your
impeccable behaviour throughout. Also the scoring this year was fantastic,
12 players scoring 100 points or more. Amazing!
The next two Chiang Mai Challenges are scheduled for
Sunday 13th March 2011 and Sunday 16th
October 2011 (Thursday 13th if you want to do the
Chiang Rai bit). As well as them we will be away at Songkhran (around 16th
April 2011) at a venue to be decided, also in China or Vietnam in June
(details will be out soon) and Hua Hin for the second time, in August.

Edwards edges eclectic at Soi Dao
Mulligans Soi Dao Golf Road Trip
The
Mulligans golfers pose for a group photo at Soi Dao.
An early start was in order for 16 golfers from Mulligans
Bar at Lake Maprachan for their second visit this year to Soi Dao. After an
easy drive we were quickly checked in by the hotel staff and we prepared
ourselves to face the wet weather that the area has experienced over the
past few weeks.
The course was very wet and although carts were allowed
off the pathways it was decided that ‘pick and place’ through the greens was
a must. We also decided to play from the yellow tees as there was no roll on
the fairways.
It had been decided to play a two-ball scramble on day
one, the draw for partners being done at Mulligans prior to the trip.
We teed off with the mountains shrouded by low cloud and
light rain falling. By the 9th hole the rain had
become quite heavy, everyone getting a good soaking.
The winners Tommy Elsey and John Chapman, with an
allowance of 6, returned a creditable round of net 66 to beat the pairings
of Dave Edwards & Ian Hart and Iain Painter & Dennis Forrest, who were tied
up on 68 points apiece.
Days 2 & 3 were stableford rounds and sensibly carts were
restricted to pathways. The winner of first day’s stableford was Dave
Edwards (17) with 43 points ahead of Terry Phur (16) and 36 points in
second.
Day three results saw Dennis Forrest (18) leading the
field in with 39 points followed by Dave Edwards (17) with 36 points.
Over the three days we had six near pin winners, namely
Ian (2), Dave (2), Ray, John, Chris and Tommy, and prizes were won by most
players over the course of the trip. The two stableford rounds also formed
an eclectic competition, the winner being Dave Edwards with a total of 50
points ahead of Brian Ferringo (26) 43 points in second and Dennis Forrest
41 points in third.

K and Dave forge a mixed bag of results
PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside
Tuesday, Oct. 19, The
Emerald – Stableford
Tuesday was our trip to Emerald where the course was the
driest of many we have played over the past few weeks.
Weekly
winners K, left, with Dave, right and Mam, back at Mulligans Lakeside.
Kurt-Eric Persson, better known as K (23) found the
conditions to his liking, shooting a fine 38 points for first. K plays from
the red tees, an allowance given to him as he is 78 years old and walks (3
times this week).
In second spot with 35 on count-back of 19 was Jeff Wylie
(6), just squeaking by Ken Hole (15) with 18 on the back 9. Mike Pledger
(20), last week’s top scorer, was able to maintain the rage to grab fourth
spot with 34 on count-back over Dave Edwards.
Near Pins were picked up by Allan, Jeff, with Frans
securing 2.
Thursday, Oct. 21,
Greenwood - Stableford
Thursday saw us take the drive up Hwy 331 to Greenwood,
where our test was to be the A & B combination. The course was in good
condition generally, despite the recent rains, there were a couple of greens
recently sanded, but all in all it was good.
Dave Edwards (17), who has been in some good form over
the past 2 weeks, was again to the fore, with 36 points, three clear of
second place, the consistent Jeff Wylie (6).
Only 1 near pin was collected, that by Phompimon Seesa,
known to her friends as Mam.
Friday was a PSC tournament at Pattana, where we had 6
players attending and it was pleasing to see Jimmy Fortune (27) get second
spot in C Flight, Allan Cassin (12) third in A Flight with a net 70 & a near
pin, and Dave Edwards (17) beaten on count-back for third spot in B Flight,
but getting the Long Drive. All Jeff & K could manage was a lucky draw, no
skill required for that.
Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf generally on
Tuesday & Thursday (we sometimes change to accommodate a Thai Holiday).
Presentations are made at the course on Tuesday, with Mulligans Lakeside
hosting the Thursday presentation. Jeff is away for a few weeks, so for more
details on scheduling etc, please call Keith 087 916 7171 or Ray 081 935
8088. Hope to see you there, Cheers & Good Golfing!

Liam takes first win in Thailand
Golf from the Travellers Rest
Saturday
winners: Wayne Waywood, Ian Dallas, Liam Horgan,
Ted Senior, Bob Anderson and John Dahlseng.
Barry Hooper
Liam Horgan has played with us at the TRGG on a number of
his regular visits to Pattaya, but this is one visit which he will be most
definitely not forget. He attained his first ever win on a Thai course at St
Andrews on Wednesday, a course that some judge to not be the easiest around
by any standards. He also went on to take a third spot on Saturday at
Emerald and was only pushed onto that position because of the dreaded
count-back. Well done Liam!
Monday, Oct. 18, Bangpra -
Stableford
1st Jim Sykes (9) 41pts
2nd Gerry Swan (14) 32pts
3rd Jimmy Wolfe (16) 31pts
4th
Lee Duncliffe (7) 31pts
Monday took us to Bangpra with a moderate sized group but
Jim Sykes really found form and took the top honours with 41 points, beating
Gerry Swan by a clear nine. Jimmy Wolfe was third on 31 after beating Lee
Duncliffe on the count-back.
Four ‘2’s on the day came from Mike Rushant, Ito
Akitoshi, Jim Sykes and Jimmy Wolfe.
Wednesday, Oct. 20, St.
Andrews – Stableford
1st Liam Horgan (14) 36pts
2nd Neil Bramley (8) 35pts
3rd Lee Duncliffe (7) 34pts
4th
Jim Sykes (7) 32pts
A fair turnout on Wednesday at St. Andrews where, as
mentioned, Liam Horgan took his first ever Thai course win, beating Neil
Bramley into second spot by one point. A further one back was Lee Duncliff
at 34 and Jim Sykes was fourth on 32.
Two ‘2’s came from Jim Sykes at the tenth, a par three,
and a special one by Lee Duncliff on the par four sixth
Thursday, Oct. 21, Phoenix

Div 2
1st Paula Byrne (22) 32pts
2nd Frank Courtney (15) 32pts
3rd Ted Senior (14) 30pts
4th
Prae Mattawong (36) 29pts
Thursday was another regular visit to Phoenix to play the
Ocean & Mountain nines. As always, a fair group made the journey to enjoy
the attributes of this great course.
Two Divisions on the day and in the premier flight Mike
Rushant was the victor with 37 points ahead of Ito Akitoshi at 35 and Barry
Pussell at 33.
Division 2 had Paula Byrne leading the pack with her 32
points after beating Frank Courtney on the count-back. Ted Senior was third
at 30, just one up on Prae Mattawong in fourth.
There were no ‘2’s recorded on the day.
Saturday, Oct. 23, The
Emerald - Stableford
Div 1
1st Wayne Waywood (13) 34pts
2nd Ian Dallas (9) 34pts
3rd Liam Horgan (13) 34pts
4th Roger Wilkinson (13) 30pts
Div 2
1st Ted Senior (14) 39pts
2nd John Dahlseng (20) 31pts
3rd Bob Anderson (21) 31pts
4th
Alan Evans (30) 30pts
Saturday we went back to Emerald as this seems to be a
favourite with a large number of our players and why not. It is always a
very good test of golf for most players whatever handicap they hold.
Numbers are already on the up and so it was this time out
as we had two divisions.
Div 1 had Wayne Waywood topping the list with 34 points
(c/b 20) ahead of Ian Dallas (c/b17) and Liam Horgan (c/b 16) on the same
score. In fourth was Roger Wilkinson with 30 points.
The second division did not need any count-back as Ted
Senior (Mr1 again) had 39 points (highest on the day) for the win and this
was eight ahead of his nearest rivals Bob Anderson and John Dahlseng. Taking
fourth spot on 30 points was Alan Evans.
Three ‘2’s came from Wayne Waywood, Jim Sykes and David
Park.
Additional awards on the day were the Nagger Award that
went to Michael Moreton, the Booby Prize won by Frank Courtney and the
nearest the pin claimed by Roger Wilkinson

Kran Nielsen bowls a great 644 series
Pattaya Sports Club Bowling League
200
Bowlers: Ooy and Kran
Someone lit a fire under Café Kronborg and they came back
like a storm to win all four points from Bavaria. Kran Nielsen led the way
for Kronborg with games of 196, 214, 234, for a 644 series, and Sue Murphy
bowled a 543 and Jang Shaw had a 536 also for Kronborg. Bavaria probably
wished they had stayed home.
First place VFW Post 9876 managed to win only one point
from third place Brother D. Antero Ronkainen bowled a 513 series and Dang
Downs had a 506 for Brother D.
Green Tree moved up to fourth place after winning three
points from House of the Golden Coin. Tue Pettae bowled a 505 series for
Green Tree but lanes eleven and twelve beat up the rest of the bowlers.
Joe Ferral once again led his USMC team with a 523 series
as they took three points from Canada and moved up two places in the
standings (based on pin count). La Montgomery bowled a 514 series for Canada
but they dropped from fourth place to fifth.
Ooy Pluemkamon, who is the only bowler with a zero
handicap, bowled a 231 game and 558 series to help her team to a two-two
split with Sabai Friday.
