Local sailors strike
gold at Asian Games
Staff Reporters
Young local lady Noppakao Poonpat continued her rise to
sailing stardom by securing a gold medal for Thailand last weekend with her
win in the Optimist dinghy class at the Asian Games in Guangzhou, China.

medal in the Women’s Dinghy Optimist class at the 16th Asian Games in China,
Sunday, Nov. 21. Full report on page 46. (AP Photo)
No stranger to success on the world scene, fifteen year
old Noppakao was expected to be among the front runners in her event and she
established an early lead on the opening day that left her opponents playing
catch-up for the remainder of the regatta. Noppakao sailed a remarkably
consistent series of races with her worst result being a 4th place finish.
It was a highly competitive contest in Guangzhou with
Kimberly Lim (Singapore) taking the silver medal and Yuting Lu (China) the
bronze. Lim had beaten Noppakao at the IODA Asian Championships this year in
Pattaya but was forced to play second fiddle here at the Asian Games. Both
junior sailors are expected to compete in a strong field at the Optimist
Worlds being held in Langkawi, Malaysia, at the end of December where
Noppakao will be defending her title.
On a golden day for Thailand at the Games (the kingdom
won 6 golds on the day) some other local sailors also featured in the
success stories. First up was 18-year- old Kirati Bualuang, the 2009 Laser
Radial Youth World Championships winner, who dominated the men’s Open Radial
race here at the Shanwei Water Sports Centre to take the gold medal.
Also striking gold on the water for Thailand were 40-year
old skipper Damrongsak Vongtim and his brother Kitsada, both from Sattahip,
who defended their title in the men’s Hobie 16 class. In the windsurfing Ed
Boonsawad, well known to sailors at Jomtien beach, was able to garner a
silver medal in the men’s RSX division while 16 year old Sarocha Prumprai
and Napali Tansai took bronzes in the women’s RSX and women’s Mistral
classes respectively.

Jesters ‘Care for Kids’ sponsor 4th Special Olympics
Bernie Tuppin
Following the success of last year’s events at the
Special Olympics Eastern Regional Games, Jesters increased their sponsorship
to a level of 100, 000 baht for this year’s programme.
Pong
took third place in the 400m race.
The games were again conducted at School #7 on Sukhumvit
Road and attracted 250 disabled children from the following schools: Rayong
Special School, Chachoengsao Special School, Garunyavet Special Orphanage,
Samut Prakarn Special Centre, Sun Ganseuksa Phiset (Chonburi), Bangpakong
Special Orphanage, Rayong Special Centre, Chantaburi Special Centre, Trad
Special Centre, Ban Tung Klom, and the host Pattaya Muang Pattaya #7 School.
To take care of these children, many of whom need
constant supervision, requires many teachers, coaches and volunteers who
came from the various schools and centres, 70 participating in all, aided by
80 volunteers from the Institute of Physical Education Chonburi Campus and
20 Police Volunteers from Pattaya City.
The
day began with the School #7 band leading the athletes to the main hall to
be welcomed and addressed by Pattaya Mayor, Itthipol Khunplome. Other VIP’s,
sponsors and visitors were then entertained by a vigorous aerobics display
performed by the team from Chachoengsao Special School.
The games began with the girls indoor football between
Chachoengsao Special School and Rayong Special School followed by the boys’
competition featuring the same two schools. The Chachoengsao teams won both
events.
Bill
from Jesters congratulates some of the children on there efforts.
With the indoor part of the programme complete, the focus
shifted to the athletic field for the outdoor sports to take place. This
programme consisted of mainly running events over a variety of distances
with a few field events as well. As always the competitors gave their all
and displayed courage and tenacity while completing their tests.
The joy of just being a part of the occasion and allowed
to participate was evident on every face regardless of their results. It is
worth noting that every competitor finished their given task, regardless of
their disability.
A track
runner gives his all.
Many people and organizations were responsible for
sponsoring the day, and I would suggest that they were all well rewarded and
a little humbled to witness the purity of spirit in which these athletes
competed. Each competitor was rewarded with a medal or a ribbon for their
efforts and it seemed to matter not to these special people what colour it
was. Everyone was a winner!
For Jesters’ spectators there was special interest in the
twenty children from Sun Ganseuksa, Chonburi, as this center is supported by
our charity drive, as is the learning center recently established at Khao
Baisri, built by Jesters’ sponsors early this year.
It was great to see children that were familiar to us and
to interact with them throughout the 2-day event.

scribe Bernie Tuppin with one of the winning girls teams.

Fun and frolics
at AU’s mini marathon
The
relay races generated a lot of excitement for all involved.
Asian University’s 12th Annual Mini Marathon was held on
Wednesday 10 November. The emphasis as ever was on having a fun get-together
for everyone at the University – full and part-time students, and all staff
members. The two relay races generated wild displays of enthusiasm, and were
followed by a more challenging 4km run around the magnificent campus.
Tour d’Eiffel trophy
at Varuna Yacht Club
There was a fin de si่cle feel at Royal Varuna Yacht Club
earlier this month as a number of the club’s French connection bade their
final au-revoir in the Tour d’Eiffel Trophy on November 14.
No fewer than nine catamarans and assorted other pleasure
craft turned out in force as they vied to topple the French hegemony of the
high seas one final time.
Out of the traps first downwind was the Hobie Tiger of
Nick Henley & Simon Makinson, but they were soon overhauled by the Nacra
Infusions which revelled in the light conditions.
By the time the fleet reached Ocean Marina, it was the
Tigers which again came to the fore as Saranya Makinson (crewed by Jean
Philippe Proust) and Richard Eyre (crewed by Dave Littlejohn) blasted
through the fleet to set up a battle royale for first place.
Morten Jakobsen tried to spoil the Tiger party but was
caught out by a huge shift to the sea on the long leg from Koh Rang Kwiaan
back to Varuna Yacht Club, which saw the rest of the fleet catch up, setting
up an exciting grand finale.
However Makinson and Proust proved once again that
fortune favoured the French and took home the inaugural Eiffel Tower, with
Eyre and Littlejohn just minutes behind in this three hour tour de force.

The
victorious Kabagis team.
The biannual AFT Basketball Tournament finals took place
on Sunday November 14 at the Fairtex Sports Club in north Pattaya.
After two months of group and knockout games the two

joining the league in 2009.
At the trophy presentation, awards were also given out to
players who gave the most outstanding performances during the season and the

Marion takes maiden victory
PSC golf from The Bunker Bar
Monday, Nov. 15, Mountain
Shadow - Stableford
The largest field of the year so far (10 groups), headed
off to tackle the notoriously difficult Mountain Shadow course in excellent
weather conditions. The course was in good fettle with the greens slick and
true, the result being that 3 putts were the order of the day for many
golfers.
Tony Berry continued his recent run of good form, and was
the only golfer to play to his handicap, winning the A Flight. Marion Melia
won the B Flight, thereby gaining her maiden win at the Bunker.
A Flight
1st Tony Berry (12) 36pts
2nd Phil Moore (11) 34pts
3rd Derek Stephenson (13) 33pts
B Flight
1st Marion Melia (26) 32pts
2nd PJ Redmond (20) 31pts
3rd Laurence Harding (17) 30pts
Near Pins: Jack Geer, Mike Corner, Mike Lloyd, and Neil Jones.
Wednesday, Nov. 17, Rayong C.C. - Stableford
We made a return visit to Rayong C.C. after a couple of
month’s layoff, and to say it proved something of a disappointment, would be
an understatement. The course was generally dry and shabby, many bunkers
apparently untended for weeks, and the greens were slow and bumpy.
One or two players managed to overcome the conditions
(both with 38 points), Geoff Cox winning the A Flight and PJ Redmond taking
the honours in B Flight.
It’s unlikely that we’ll be making a return visit anytime
soon, which is sad because the course is a good layout and had previously
shown signs of improvement earlier in the year, but now appears to be
slipping back into disrepair.
A Flight
1st Geoff Cox (15) 38pts
2nd Dave Ashman (15) 37pts
3rd Geoff Parker (16) 34pts
B Flight
1st PJ Redmond (20) 38pts
2nd Reg Smart (25) 35pts
3rd Geoff Hart (18) 31pts
Near Pins: Mike Johns, Phil Moore, Tony Berry, and Marion Melia (that
should get PJ going!)
Friday, Nov. 19, Crystal
Bay - Medal
Even though we had 12 regular players taking part in the
PSC monthly competition, there was still a big turnout - maybe the high
season has really arrived! Unlike our previous visit when the course was
waterlogged, it was now in fine condition and the round proceeded smoothly.
Three players finished with net 70 points; the in-form
Phil Moore beating JJ on a count-back to win the A Flight, and Duncan Lee
taking the honours in B Flight on his first game back.
A Flight
1st Phil Moore (12) net 70
2nd JJ Harney (12) net 70
3rd Greg Berry (10) net 72
B Flight
1st Duncan Lee (18) net 70
2nd Mike Corner (20) net 71
3rd Geoff Parker (16) net 73
Near Pins: Dave Ashman, Greg Berry, Mike Lloyd and Takeshi

Dunkley has the edge at Navy
PJ Soi Khao Noi Golf Group
Today’s golf proved most enjoyable at the very fine
Plutaluang Navy Golf club venue. We played the South and East layouts which
were in exceptionally good condition; the greens were holding and putting
true and the fairways were soft and very playable.
Play was brisk and all but our last group of high
handicappers got around in less than 4 hours.
The merit places were won by Dennis Dunkley (11) with 34
points ahead of Rusty Archibald (7) with 33 and Ray Bridgeman (24) with 32.
Near pins were won by Chuck Carriere with 2, John Raddis
and Ray Bridgeman. The longest first put on the final hole went to Dennis
Dunkley.

Warner takes route sixty-six
PSC Golf from the Cafe Kronborg
The Drut
Monday, Nov. 15, Greenwood
- Stableford
Thirty-six golfers assembled at the Cafe Kronborg eagerly
anticipating what lay ahead. Today we were playing the B and C nines at
Greenwood from the white tees. The first group teed off at 0950 hours and
completed the round in four hours and fifteen minutes.
The weather was fine and the course in good condition
whilst the short rough in front of the greens provided its usual challenge.
On our first nine on the B side the greens were medium
paced while on the flipside, read C nine, despite being sanded and looking
like you would need a caravan of dromedaries to traverse them, the greens
were quicker than the disappearance of a politician’s election promise.
In the A Flight Bill Plath was the only player to equal
his handicap with a score of thirty six points which was assisted by holing
a one hundred yard pitch shot on the first hole on the C side. In second
place was Mike Gosden with thirty five points, relegating Owen Walkley to
third on the same score and in fourth spot was Tommy Janssen with thirty
four points.
In the B flight Joe Vanderwegen returned thirty five
points and was given a standing ovation which was only second to the one he
received when he addressed The Thailand Haemorrhoid Association last July.
Second place went to Tarnutzer Kaspar with thirty two points whilst Neil
Allison on the same score finished third. Steen Jerne slotted into fourth
spot on twenty seven points.
Graham Buckingham, who is still unhappy as a result of
Queen Elizabeth sending him half a telegram when he turned fifty, scored
thirty three points to take the C Flight from Dave Richardson on thirty one
points. Andy Makara handed in thirty points for third spot and Jean Claude
Lhoste, who posted twenty eight points to finish fourth, commented that one
of the easiest shots in golf is a chip into the bunker.
As can be seen from the results the course was harder
than Chinese arithmetic.
At presentations we welcomed Morten Nielsen from Denmark,
Hafliger Erwin and Tarnutzer Kaspar from Switzerland and Ralf Nilsson and
Tommy Jansson from Sweden.
A Flight (0–16)
1st Bill Plath (16) 36pts
2nd Mike Gosden (10) 35pts
3rd Owen Walkley (13) 35pts
4th Tommy Janssen (4) 34pts
B Flight (17-23)
1st Joe Vanderwegen (23) 35pts
2nd Tarnutzer Kaspar (22) 32pts
3rd Neil Allison (20) 32pts
4th Steen Jerne (19) 27pts

2nd Dave Richardson (24) 31pts
3rd Andy Makara (32) 30pts
4th
Jean Claude Lhoste (24) 28pts
Near pins went to Owen Walkley on B2, Neil Allison B5,
Neil Allison C3 and Tommy Janssen on C6
Long putts results went to Jean Claude Lhoste on B9 and
Joe Vanderwegen on C9.

charity and those who contributed are sincerely thanked for their
contributions.
Thursday, Nov. 18, Phoenix
–Monthly Mug
Thirty two golfers left The Cafe Kronborg at 0810 hours
and headed to Phoenix Golf Club arriving twenty minutes later.
Today we were played the Mountain and Ocean nines and the
leading group who teed off at 0910 hours finished in four hours and forty
minutes. The weather was oky koky and the course in good condition.
The monthly Mug was won by Jeff Warner with a superb net
66. He generously rang the bell back at the bar which resulted in a couple
of long retired pugs’ eyes lighting up like Newfoundland rock lobsters at
the thought of just one more round.
In the A Flight Mike Allidi with a net 70 took out first
place from Graham Porteous on net 72. Brendan Byrne returned a steady net 74
to edge out the ever smiling Bill Plath on a count-back.
The B Flight saw Kasper Tarnutzer hand in a net 74 to
edge out Andy Makara on net 75, who lamented that his brain tuner was
somewhere between stations. In a tight finish for the minors, Graham
Buckingham finished third on net 77 relegating Jean Claude Lhoste to fourth
spot on a count-back.
Sadly Warren Holland and Jan Lovgreen missed a placing
with net 78’s.
Monthly Mug
1st Jeff Warren, net 66
A Flight (0–18)
1st Mike Allidi (4) net 70
2nd Graham Porteous (7) net 72
3rd Brendan Byrne (18) net 74
4th Bill Plath (16) net 74
B Flight (19 +)
1st Kasper Tarnutzer (22) net 74
2nd Andy Makara (32) net 75
3rd Graham Buckingham (24) net 77
4th
Jean Claude Lhoste (23) net 77
Near pins went to Mashi Kaneta Ocean 5, Mike Allidi Ocean
7, Per-Olav Baarli Mountain 4 and Brendan Byrne on Mountain 8.
Long putts resulted in Peter Hammond on Ocean 9 and
Patrick Poussier on Mountain 9 being successful.
Thanks again goes to Bjarne and his team at The Cafe
Kronborg for their generous support which is much appreciated.

Parrish hits best of the day at Greenwood
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
Derek Brook
Tuesday, Nov. 16,
Greenwood – Stableford
“It’s only a game after all!” Some people have no idea,
how can you say that and play golf in Pattaya? Certainly the players meeting
in Tropical Bert’s early in the morning might have mixed feelings, but they
turn out in all weathers and stay cheerful.
Tuesday
winners Brian Parrish and Jack Robertson
pose with one of Bert’s staff.
On this day it was off to Greenwood and the trip up there
is quite good these days, so into cars and away we went, soon to arrive at
Greenwood. Quickly changed it was on to the first tee where we were told we
were to play C & B in that order
Greenwood was in good condition; the fairways as good as
normal but the rough was tough, and the greens not yet recovered from being
filled full of little holes and covered in sand. I am told there is a reason
for this, must be a good one I suppose to upset so many golfers. Talking of
upset, it was windy as usual, nothing new these days.
Still, soon round, we stopped in the restaurant which on
the day was downstairs. The food is good here and cheap, it was enjoyed by
all. Seems they have a new cook.
Back at Bert’s it was the Golfers Special of the day,
bangers and mash. Good grub at Bert’s, especially if you like good old
British food. Thai food here is pretty good also.
So onto the winners and we only had one player beat his
handicap. In The A Flight, 0 to 17, the winner was Brian Parrish with 39
points, by far the best of the day. In second was Mashi Kaneta with 34
points and in third was Dick Warberg with 31 points.
In the B Flight the winner was Jack Robertson with 35
points ahead of John Roberts with 33 points in second, and Mick O’Meara in
third with 30 points.
Near Pins went to Mashi Kaneta, Daryl Evans, Don Carmody
and the scribe. The Long Putts were won by Joel Flor and Brian Gabe.
So presentations over, it was time for a few cold beers
and an early night! T.T.F.N.

A tale of two nines for Ken
PSC golf from Mulligans Lakeside
Tuesday, Nov. 16, The
Emerald – Stableford
We took a trip down to Emerald on Tuesday with a good
sized group so we had 2 flights with the split at 18 and up. The course was
in good order but the greens were slower than normal.
Tuesday’s flight winners: Ken Hole and Derek Waterworth.
Ken Hole (16) became winner with two very different
nines; garnering only 14 points on the front nine but 24 on the back to top
A flight with 38 in total. Lol (16) came second on 36 points and Darren
Ottaway had a very good round to come third with 34 points off his 1 H/cap
to edge out Allin Cassin on a count-back
B Flight saw Derek Waterworth (32) take first place with
33 points, followed by Keith Hodges (26) with 31 points in second and Brian
Ferrigno (26) on 29 points in third.
The near pins were shared by Lol, Derren, Mam & Brian.
Thursday, Nov. 18,
Pleasant Valley – Stableford
On Thursday we travelled to Pleasant Valley and found the
course to be in good condition but the greens were slow. We had a smaller
field today so just the one flight and prizes going to the top two.
In first place today was Graham Hiskett (13) on 35
points, two ahead of Lol (16) in second spot.
Allan took three near pins, allowing Jon to have the
other.
Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf generally on
Tuesday & Thursday (we sometimes change to accommodate a Thai Holiday).
Presentations are made at the course on Tuesday, with Mulligans Lakeside
hosting the Thursday presentation. For more details on scheduling etc.,
please call Ray on 081 935 8088. Hope to see you there, Cheers & Good
Golfing!

Stonebridge shows top form at Burapha
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar
Joey’s column
Monday, Nov. 15, Burapha A
& B - Stableford
Today, was back to the blue tees on A & B; the Capt’
wasn’t having this white tee rubbish - real golfers play from the blue.
Nearly a quarter of the field played to their handicap or better, with the
top score coming from Peter Stonebridge with an excellent 40 points to win
Div B (his best round for sometime) ahead the two of the three ‘Jims’ in the
line up, Messrs Bryan (36pts) and King (35pts).
Lloyd
Shuttleworth - winner of Div. A at Khao Kheow on Friday.
There were three all tied up on 37 points in Div A, and
once sorted out using the usual count-back, John Cunningham came out ahead
of Tony Garnett and early starter, Art O’Connor.
The Capt’ had his victory speech rehearsed after the
front nine, playing one over off the stick for 21 points, but could only
manage 9 points on the back and was laughed at all the way to the bar.
It did play very hard with the wind up and swirling but
very enjoyable all the same. We were up and away early as we had to wait for
only a five-ball to take off out the front, but we still got around in a bit
over 4 hours.
This really is the best time for golf in Pattaya as the
temperatures are perfect for playing and there’s no rain. Nice to see my old
mate down from Korat with his wife for a few days holiday and good to play
with him even though he’s now got a dodgy handicap, just kidding Briany,
thanks for the day out mate.
Finally, we say goodbye to Kissy (Buchanan) as he’s going
home to Perth - safe travelling mate.
There were four ‘2’s from John Kittilsen, Briany
Christie, Jamie King & Art O’Connor.
Div A (0-13)
1st John Cunningham (7) 37pts
2nd Tony Garnett (11) 37pts
3rd Art O’Connor (13) 37pts
Div B (14+))
1st Peter Stonebridge (16) 40pts
2nd James Bryan (17) 36pts
3rd Jamie King (16) 35pts
Tuesday, Nov. 16, Pattaya C.C. – Stableford
Whatever anyone one may say about Pattaya Country Club,
one thing you can be sure of, they have the snazziest drinks stops in town.
They may not be spending money on the course but they sure know how to
spruce up their halfway houses.
As far as the golf course goes, we hear they’re are
looking for a new greenkeeper and they sure do need one, although the front
nine greens are now reasonable, they could just do with ironing a bit. The
back (greens) are still very patchy, nevertheless PCC remains popular, with
21 Outbackers here today on a very busy course, leading unfortunately to one
of the slowest rounds we’ve experienced here for a long time.
Welcome to Rich Allison, who fired a 73 gross off a 3
H/cap to win Div. A with 38 points, ahead of General Jack and Lloyd
Shuttleworth, and also welcome back to John Kittilsen, returning from
Scandinavia as winter sets in.
Geoff Moodie, who was complaining about losing his way
having got 19 points at the turn and adding only 4 points more after 13,
then rattled off 15 points in the last five to storm to a win in Div. B,
also with 38 points. Second went to Dave Sproessig (37pts) and third to
Terry Marney (36pts).
Dennis Perssson, the resident Outback Turnip, recently
returning to the real game of golf, sparked up his card in the last two
holes, finishing with a birdie (worth 5pts) and a par, worth another 3.
There was a ‘jackpot 2’, bagged by Terry Marney.

Wednesday, Nov. 17, Eastern Star - Stableford
It was almost five months ago in June that we last came
here, which at that time the course had just had its greens sanded. It was
different today for the 25 Outbackers and it’s a pleasure to report that the
course was generally in good condition although the greens were a little
slow.
The groups were away on time but, as is usually the case
here, points were difficult to come by. Rick Allison, who fired a 73 gross
earlier in the week at Pattaya C.C., followed it up with another good round
today, picking up 36 points (gross 75) to win Div A, which is an excellent
score for here but it earned him an immediate H/cap cut to 2 from Capt’ Bob.
Steve Mann, who organised the day on behalf of the Outback, took second with
33, which also earned him another ladder point to go top, with Jeff Bunn
back in third on 32.
Div B went to a surprised Stan Rees’ mate, Ian Waddell
with 34 points, followed in by Jamie King (32) and an equally surprised Mike
Quill in third with just 29.
Don & Deborah from Calgary, Canada joined us for a hit
but found too much water on their way round, apparently ending up with just
one ball between them. Still, they enjoyed themselves and don’t forget -
that’s what it’s all about.
There were just two ‘2’s from Jeff Bunn & Lawrie McBride.
Div A (0-14)
1st Rick Allison (3) 36pts
2nd Steve Mann (10) 33pts
3rd Jeff Bunn (8) 32pts
Div B (15+)
1st Ian Waddell (23) 34pts
2nd Jamie King (16) 32pts
3rd Mike Quill (18) 29pts
Friday, Nov. 19, Khao Kheow – Stableford
A strong field of 42 Outbackers assembled at Khao Kheow
today to play the C & A nines, strong because it’s a while since we’ve had a
premier division with nine single figure handicappers playing.
The course was once again in excellent shape, as nearly
always seems to be the case, but it (the course) was the winner by a country
mile.
Lloyd Shuttleworth (having his last game for a while
before returning to Basra) and Raji both shot 37 points, which were the top
two scores of the day. Lloyd, with a better back nine got the nod to win
Div. A. Raji, who had to settle for second, picked up two ladder points
putting him back on top with Steve Mann, who got one today for his 35
points.
Keith Buchanan took Div. B with 35 points ahead of Bob
Finley and Steve Milne on 34 apiece, whilst Div. C was another count-back
between Ian Waddell and Bob Lindborg. Mike Quill sneaked into third place
with 31points, as he did earlier in the week on the identical score.
There were only three ‘2’s from Raji, Kissy & Bob Philp.
Div A (0-11)
1st Lloyd Shuttleworth (5) 37pts
2nd Amarjit Banwaitt (7) 37pts
3rd Steve Mann (10) 35pts
4th Bob Philp (8) 34pts
Div B (12-17)
1st Keith Buchanan (16) 35pts
2nd Robert Finley (14) 34pts
3rd Steve Milne (12) 34pts
4th George Bishop (15) 32pts
Div C (18+)
1st Ian Waddell (23) 33pts
2nd Bob Lindborg (18) 33pts
3rd Mike Quill (18) 31pts
4th James Bryan (17) 31pts
Note: The Outback Golf Bar is situated about 6km
from Sukhumvit Road along Soi Siam Country. All are welcome to come and join
us for a beer and a hit. Just call in and put your name down on the list or

Van Queen delivers the goods
PSC golf from The Golf Club Bar & Grill
Monday, Nov. 15, Green
Valley - Stableford
1st Mike Quill (19) 43pts
2nd Brad Sproxton (12) 39pts
3rd Brian Wilkinson (15) 38pts
4th
John Bahng (12) 36pts
Seven groups started play today with expectations that
the greens were improving, and judging by the scores things are looking
better.
Mike Quill went out in 23 points to take an
insurmountable lead but it was reported that there were over 5 occasions
where favorable ricochets from various stationary objects played a role in
his fine 43 points. Sproxton, Wilko and Bahng were all playing in the same
group and each had to hand over some nosh to Mick Beresford playing his
first round in a month. Thanks to all for joining us today.
Wednesday, Nov. 17, Khao

A Flight (0-13)
1st Sonny Goldsbury (12) 38pts

B Flight (14+)

2nd Booby Love Allen (16) 39pts
3rd Dan Avon (14) 39pts
4th Mick Beresford (21) 36pts
Near Pins: (A3) John Emmerson
A great turnout of 10 groups today allowed us to have 2
divisions and there were some great scores. We played the C & A combination
off of the yellow tees, but unfortunately the yellows were on the whites,
hence the aforementioned great scores.
The A flight was taken by Sonny Glodsbury with 38 points
after a fine display of chipping and putting. Noel Pittard had 37 with a
back nine of 18 and a back six of 11 to take out Rusty Barfield on
count-back. Rusty had a back six of 10 to take out John McQ. There were no
less than six others that were on 36 points.
The second flight had a runaway winner in the form of
“The Van Queen” Marlene Prudden who scored an amazing 45 points. Marlene was
six clear of second placed Bobby Love Allen who edged Dan “Avon Calling” on
count-back with a better back nine of 18 to 14. The “Best Dressed Pink
Panther” Mick Beresford took fourth.
John Emmerson had the shot of the day on A3, narrowly
missing an ace to take the near pin prize. Cheers and chilly beers to all
that entered today. Keep an eye on the signup sheets for our next away trip
to Kabin Buri.

Just another day in paradise
102nd Pattaya Sports Club monthly golf tounament
On a sunny and temperate day in Ban Chang, 136 golfers
turned out for the 102nd monthly Pattaya Sports Club tournament held at the
Emerald Golf Course.
Low
gross winner Noel Francis Pittard, left, with the PSC Golf Chairman Joe
Mooneyham.
The usual format was used with the A Flight playing a
medal round and other 4 flights competing in a stableford event.
The course was in very good condition as the weather has
been excellent of late and it seems that all of the venues we play are in
good nick. Just in time for the high season.
A
Flight winner Tony Oakes, left, with the PSC Golf Chairman.
With the busy season upon us it was good to see many
familiar faces back in town. Welcome back to all and a hearty welcome to the
many new people who participated in this month’s tournament.
The presentation was again held at the Diana Garden
Resort in north Pattaya - one of our favorite venues for such events. As
always we wish to thank Diana Garden Resort for providing an excellent
buffet and offering happy hour prices on drinks.
C
Flight winner Andy Galvin, right, collects his prize.
On to the competition and with quite a number of good
golfers in town the overall low gross winner was Noel Francis Pittard with a
sterling 73, playing off a H/cap of 5. Well done, Noel!
In the A Flight, Tony Oakes (9) came through with a net
69 to take first place ahead of Tony Berry (net 75) in second and Doug Goode
(net 76) in third.
Ladies
flight winner Jum Karagitt, left, accepts her award from the Golf Chairman.
Peter Hynard was top dog in the B Flight with a well
constructed 39 points to finish ahead of Frank Tordeur on count-back. Jeff
Cox took third place just the one point back.
C Flight was dominated by Andy Galvin and his fantastic 5
under par 41 points which left him three clear of Peter Henshaw in second
and a further one up on Bill Johnston in third.
Kenneth Lind took out the D Flight with 38 points to
finish ahead of Seamus Farrell and Leo Ruskinen respectively.
Last but not least, Jum Karagitt was the winner of the
Ladies division today.

Banjo & Boss continue their run
IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
The Pattaya Golf Society returned to stableford mode
after a heavy two day’s stroke-play at Green Valley, with a visit to Eastern
Star on Monday 15th November. The course was in good condition and the
problematic greens posed no real concerns as the large field, divided into
two flights at twenty and under, took to the tee.
Interestingly many of the golfers still had some “annual
championship” adrenalin in the veins and those who performed well previously
were in the frame again.
In the second flight Tim Lazecki embarrassingly accepted
third place with 27 points, one behind Jack Robertson and his 28 points. The
flight winner was Len Jones with a mere thirty points being good enough.
In the top flight Murray Hart collected 30 points and
took third place with second placed Wichai Tananusorn again in the frame
with 31 points. The best score of the day was recorded by Richard “Banjo”
Bannister and the new PGS Net Champion celebrated with 34 points for an easy
win. He also capped a fine day with the only birdie ‘2’, on the third hole.
Kevin McBride celebrated his return with the Booby Bevy
after depositing at least two sleeves of balls in the ample Eastern Star
water. But for him, and many others, just being on the golf course was a joy
itself as the ravages of a European winter set in elsewhere.
Stoke duo out on their own
After almost a year the Pattaya Golf Society revisited
the testing course at Mountain Shadow on Wednesday, 17th November, for a
stableford competition with the substantial field divided into two flights
at 16 and under. The course was in excellent condition and it was a treat to
find greens with true pace after the trials at Green Valley and Eastern Star
during the previous outings.
Historically the course rates as one of the toughest the
group plays, with an average winning score of a little over 73 net and it
was no surprise that the second flight struggled on the track where accuracy
counts for more than bravado.
The second flight saw a Canadian trio head the lists: In
third place was Brian Yeung, making his first visit to the podium, with 24
points, in second was Tim Lazecki on 29, a couple of points behind fellow
Canadian Jack Robertson, enjoying a new lease of life with his new knee on
31 points.
The top flight had Jens Gunnarsson returning in third
place on 32 points with the Stoke-on-Trent duo of Steve Jones and “Banjo”
Bannister leading the field with 33 and 35 points respectively. Their home
town is world famous for its pottery industry and it was fitting perhaps
that Steve and Banjo, who had contributed his fourth successive win, found
accurate wedges and woods to match the skill of his town’s forefather Josiah
Wedgwood. And on the vast Mountain Shadow greens good potters really matter!
The day’s only birdie ‘2’ was recorded by Len Jones on
the eighth and Bobby Shirkey enjoyed the Booby Bevy for his low score in his
short visit.
Mountain Shadow is a course which is like good wine. It
needs to be tasted only occasionally and treated well to fully enjoy its
experience. The PGS will be back there again during high season, but not
just yet.
Wichai throws a spanner in
the works
On Friday, 19th November, the Pattaya Golf Society
travelled to Greenwood to play a stableford event over the C and B nines
with “Banjo” Bannister seeking to equal the group’s record by recording his
fifth consecutive victory. Little wonder then that his playing group was
extremely competitive amongst the large field, divided into two flights at
nineteen and under.
Greenwood was playing very long on the day with damp
fairways giving no run and the white tees back at their furthest extent and
with the excruciating collar of Peter Thompson rough surrounding each green
the day was to be a long one for all except those who could handle a
delicate short game.
In the second flight scores were unimpressive with Gordon
Everingham taking third place with 28 points and Tim Lazecki going one
better for second. One of the better high handicapped chippers is Pat Murphy
and it was perhaps fitting that he topped the flight with an excellent 33
points.
In the top flight Shui Kodaka found himself in
illustrious company sharing third place with Paul McNally, with Paul firing
the day’s best gross of eighty on his way to 33 points. The joint winners
were Wichai and “Banjo”, the latter finding the skillful Thai golfer hard to
handle on the day as his short game blossomed and he found the fairways with
unerring accuracy.
Shui shared the ‘2’s pot with Roy Mann who recorded his
first ‘2’s payday in ten years of trying. Fittingly Wichai and “Banjo” top
the ‘Player of the Month’ table as the group enters its final few
competitions and no-one would begrudge either winning the close encounter.

Pittard on pole at Emerald
Golf from the Travellers Rest
Barry Hooper
Lost clubs – Please help
us find them!
I am turning over the opening of my report to a plea for
help to all golfers in Pattaya. A golfer named Tristan Gilbert played with
the TRGG at Phoenix on Thursday18th Nov. He had travelled out to the course
by organised bus and after playing his round boarded the bus and returned to
Pattaya believing that his clubs had been loaded back on the bus along with
his fellow players. On reaching Pattaya it came to light that his clubs were
not on the bus and after checking around and also ringing Phoenix to see if
they had been inadvertently left behind, they were absolutely nowhere to be
found.
Saturday’s overall winner Noel Pittard with divisional winners Rusty
Barfield, Monique Bunce and Mike Rushant.
It is believed that they were probably put on the wrong
bus belonging to other players from one of the many organisations which
played Phoenix that day. Yet despite extensive enquiries over the weekend
and this week the clubs have still not been found.
They are Nike CCI Clubs in a Top Point dark blue golf bag
containing a Travellers Rest Golf Group membership card and other papers in
a wallet and a camera.
I ask please if anyone has any information as to the
whereabouts of these clubs, please contact the Travellers Rest Hotel at 086
056 7019 or me (Barry) personally at 087 935 6179.

Wolfe second, also at 30 - he lost the count-back by two. In third was
Terence Winter at 28, also after count-back over Laurie Bevan.

Paddies Day in November
Phoenix Tuesday Golf Group
Mike Gerrard
Beautiful weather is once again with us at this time of
the year: sunny, warm, but with a nice breeze.
Mountain and Lakes course was the task on Tuesday,
November 16 and with it not being too busy we started bang on time. I must
have got the mix right today as all teams seemed to finish in a better time.
About four and a half hours.
Tuesday’s top three with the staff at the Relax Bar.
It has to be said however that this was due to the last
couple of holes where a huge bank of clouds was forming and threatening
which made everyone scurry a little faster to finish. Our last group did
manage to catch the start of the storm, but boldly battled through it to
finish well. Not a moment too soon I may add. When the storm did hit us it
was one of the worst this year.
This affected our little presentation back at the Relax
Bar where we had to split the group up to find somewhere to sit out of the
rain. Never mind, that did not make the amber nectar any less enjoyable.
It was a clean sweep for the Irish lads today. The winner
with a fine 37 points (finishing in the rain) was John “The Boy” Bartley
ahead of Patrick “The Cheshire Grin” Browne in second place on 35 points and
in third place was John “Tall Trees” Stafford.
Even the near pins were dominated by the lovable Hugh
“Yes Minister” Byrne, who managed to hit 3 super shots to claim 3 prizes.
The other one went to an old Brummie mate of mine, Colin “The Supply
Merchant” Gregg, with a superb shot on Mountain 8 to convert into a birdie.
The lucky draw prizes of a free massage and a free drink,
both donated by our hosts of the Relax Bar, went to Rod Gregg and myself
respectively.
One more lucky draw went to Phil Kington, which once
again gave everyone who returned for the presentation something back from
their original subscription.
On Tuesday November 30 we will hold a stroke-play
competition with Trattoria Italliana being the sponsor for the best score of
the day. We now have two tee-times every Friday at 12.00 noon for the
foreseeable future.
Also we seem to have a little group of players who like
to go out sea fishing and future trips will be on the agenda after this
Saturday’s trip. For information call me (Mike) on 087 091 7565.

John Bahng awarded the Medal
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s
Sunday, Nov. 14, Green
Valley - Monthly Medal
A Flight
1st Seamus Cotter (11) net 69
2nd Thierry Petremont (11) net 71
3rd Jeremy Massie (11) net71
B Flight
1st John Bahng (12) net 69
2nd Barry Horgan (13) net 69
3rd Matt Doyle (13) net 71
C Flight
1st Don Lehmer (18) net 71
2nd Pierre Bietry (16) net 71
3rd Eddy Beilby (17) net 71
Red Flight
1st Yui Bietry (12) net 70
Near Pins: No 4 Kathy Doody, No 9 Chaten Patel, No
12 Chaten Patel, No 16 Seamus Cotter.
John Bahng, whom this column has cited as a nice guy
several times previously, won B Flight, but more importantly took home the
silver incrusted tankard emblematic of the monthly medal, which in this case
was for November. To do so John first had to shoot a dazzling net 69 then
win a count-back over Barry Hogan. Co. Ofally’s Matt Doyle managed to win
the bronze despite the pain of a pulled muscle, he or someone had pulled.
Sunday’s
low gross winner Seamus Cotter,
left, and medal winner John Bahng.
The senior flight provided us with another trophy winner,
the new low gross trophy kindly donated by Pierre the vice captain, the low
gross on the medal day gets to keep the trophy for the month, unless anyone
manages to win it three times in the same year. He or she then gets to keep
it. Seamus the good Captain was the first recipient with another solid net
69. It was count-back time again to sort out the remaining flight places,
Thierry Petremont edging Jeremy Massie for the silver.
Skipping down to C Flight saw three competitors piled up
all with net 71’s; Don Lehmer emerging the victor while Pierre ‘the
Magician’ filled the silver role with Eddy the Eagle rounding out the
flight.
Yui Bietry must have thought she had blown her chances in
the Red Flight starting 5-5-9 then staging a remarkable recovery with six
straight pars. Yui duplicated the feat on the back nine to book her spot in
the year-end gold along with Seamus, John and Barry.
Jeremy Massie, Peter Lenoury, Chaten Patel, Gavin Knox
and Peter Henshaw shared the ‘2’s pot.
Monday, Nov. 15, The
Emerald – Stableford
A Flight
1st Ted Lodge (11) 38pts
2nd Peter Lenoury (8) 36pts
3rd Graham Porteous (7) 36pts
B Flight
1st Colin Davis (15) 43pts
2nd Geoff Kubas (19)40pts
3rd
Jim Bell (21)37pts
This scribe has mentioned it numerous times but you can’t
appreciate how tough it is until you have done it. Colin ‘The Donkey’ has to
find and load every ones clubs, sort out the pairings and the transportation
out and corral the late breakfast crowd just to get to the course and then
has to find “lost souls” and battle course management, and then still find a
way to calm down and focus on his own game. He did that this Monday in a
manner which exceeded all others, amassing 43 points for the junior flight
and match honours.
Any other day Geoff ‘Elvis’ Kubas haul of 40 points would
have been expected to probably win but today it was good only for the
silver. Jim ‘Houdini’ Bell rounded out the flight with a steady 37 points.
The senior flight provided two even par rounds in the
persons of Peter Lenoury and Graham Porteous; Peter had the better of his
mate on count-back for the silver. But the honors belonged to the young man
from the Emerald isle Ted Lodge who posted the flights top score of 38
points.
Ed Wyckoff, Mike Holmes, Mike Jeffreys, Homicide Hank and
Graham Porteous a brace shared the ‘2’s pot.
Big Matt, left the course for a short time to try to get
his muscle sorted out, the destination is unknown.
Wednesday, Nov. 17,
Bangpra - Stableford
A Flight
1st Kevin Mcentee (6) 37pts
2nd Terry Mangan (12) 35pts
3rd Gavin Knox (11) 34pts
B Flight
1st Tore Eliassen (14) 38pts
2nd Dan Blake (13) 37pts
3rd Albert McEvoy (14) 34pts
C Flight
1st Christy Knight (19) 36pts
2nd Joe Tynan (30) 35pts
3rd Eddy
Beilby (17) 34pts
Interestingly, today all the flight winners also pocketed
a ‘2’ except Kevin Mcentee, he had a pair, to go with his 37 point A Flight
win. Terry Mangan made it a one-two for the Irish boys, carding a sound 35
points while Gavin ‘The Flying Scotsman’ Knox filled the flight on 34
points.
B Flight provided the match winner in Tore Eliassen with
his best of the day 38 points. Dan Blake took the silver a shot back and Co.
Dublin’s Albert McEvoy took the bronze a further three shots back.
The Irish Boys took the most of the loot again in C
Flight, with Christy ‘Good’ Knights even par round good for first. Terry
Mangan came in second a shot adrift of Christy and Eddy ‘The Eagle’ Beilby
filled the flight after getting the better of Jum Karagit on a count-back
decision.

Backyard Boys
out in force at Emerald
The Backyard Golf Society
After a few weeks of not enough payers to make up two
groups, let alone three, this week seemed to be the turning point as 13 guys
turned up for a game at Emerald Golf Course. We welcomed Mike and Micky as
first timers with Geoff and Russel getting to the point of buying T-shirts
or a round a drinks!
Martyn,
left, with winner Terry C, right.
The tee time this week was brought forward to 07:45 due
to the fact that the PSC had a big competition going out at 09:30 a.m. With
some of the white tees moved back this week it made for a tough round of
golf which reflected in the low winning score of 32 by Terry C, who also
took the nearest the pin prize. Skins results are as follows: Andy Oz (7),
Dangle (4), Bernie (3), JJ (3) and Terry C (1).
After prize giving in the club house we all went down the
road for a few cold ones and to listen to ‘Broken Wing’ running on about how
he deserved a mention because he had won 2 games in the previous four weeks.
Enough said!

Ashes and sackcloth
IPGC golf from The Haven
Monday, Nov. 15, Khao
Kheow - Stableford
CSS75
1st Garry Barling (9) 35pts
2nd Trevor Schirmer (14) 33pts
3rd Peter Skinner (11) 33pts
4th Yasuo Suzuki (10) 33pts
5th
Dick Heaney (14) 31pts
Following an extremely high scoring week, the visits to
three tough courses this past seven days was a complete turnaround starting
with the always hard to beat Khao Kheow off the yellow tees over the B and C
layouts.
Garry
Barling.
New boy Garry Barling, having not seen the course
previously, had none of the concerns or trepidations that affected the rest
of the day’s hopefuls, being the only player to play within the standard two
shots of handicap and thus ensuring that the CSS would move out three
strokes for the day.
Trevor Schirmer got the better of Peter Skinner in a
count-back for second with a better 21 to 18 around the C course. Yasuo
Suzuki, having made good use of the tips taken in during the previous week’s
play, came fourth after only scraping together 16 in the same count-back,
with Dick Heaney another couple back in fifth spot.
Peter
Skinner.
Peter Skinner and Jens Gunnarsson shared the 2’s pool in
the first division whilst amazingly Irwin Epp had two in the second
division, scoring four points on each and together with another couple of
pars off his 19 handicap looked to be a shoo-in winner, but then managed to
collect just nine points on the other 14 holes to slip out of contention in
the main competition. But the 2’s pot was well worth the effort as it
comprised four roll-overs.
Before presenting the prizes The Doc welcomed new members
Irwin Epp and Garry Barling and also welcomed back Jens Gunnarsson and
Rodney Nabbe.
Wednesday, Nov. 17, Green
Valley - Stableford
CSS72
1st Peter Skinner (11) 37pts
2nd Trevor Schirmer (14) 37pts
3rd Irwin Epp (19) 36pts
4th Roar Berger (27) 35pts
5th Alan Pilkington (10) 35pts
6th
Peter Sumner (7) 35pts
With many of the players considering the day’s venue as a
home course, playing it a least a couple of times a month, it was
unsurprising that the scores were a great improvement for the second of the
weekday competitions.
Peter Skinner turned the tables on Trevor Schirmer today,
taking the number one spot in a count-back with a better 20 to 17 result
over the inward half after a steady opening nine as Trevor slipped slightly
following a strong outward nine.
Irwin Epp, helped by yet another ‘2’, took third place
with a much better overall score on most of the holes. Roar Berger led in a
group of three for fourth place with the best back nine of 18 as Alan
Pilkington took fifth and Peter Sumner sixth after they had leveled the
count-back over the nine at 17 a piece with and Alan squeezing in by a
margin of 12 to 11 over the last six.
Mikael Andersson and Kevin Hamilton shared the 2’s pool
in the first division and Irwin Epp showed that it was not a fluke the
previous outing as he dropped in another ‘2’ in the second division but this
time had to share the pot with Al Rolnik, Dick Heaney and Shuichi Kodaka.
Back at The Haven Joanna Lundahl was welcomed as a new
member and Al Rolnik, Paul Simpson, David Howden and Benny Hansen were
welcomed back.
Friday, Nov. 19, Laem
Chabang B & C (White tees) - Stableford
CSS 73
1st Dave Howden (13) 36pts
2nd Peter Skinner (11) 34pts
3rd Trevor Schirmer (14) 34pts
4th Lindsay Gailey (14) 33pts
5th
Carsten Becker (6) 33pts
After a hiatus of more than five years the Soi 13 group
returned to Laem Chabang following requests by a few of the regular golfers
to play. Not much seems to have changed in the intervening years, with the
costs still far out of the reach of the average golfer who resides in
Thailand and who does not command a banker’s style pension, and making
comparisons with other available courses it is difficult to substantiate the
differences in a cost/value analysis.
David Howden took his first win at The Haven for many a
moon playing the course for the first time with a steady if unspectacular
round that was the epitome of application to the job in hand.
For the third time in the week Trevor Schirmer and Peter
Skinner were involved in a count-back with each other, with Peter winning
out for the second time by a narrow 16 to 15 margin and taking second place,
ensuring that Trevor’s take home was again reduced just when he was hoping
to fill up the sack before returning home for three weeks vacation.
Lindsay Gailey also won a count-back over Carsten Becker
for fourth place after they had both gone out in level handicap, with a
better 15 to 14 result.
There were no 2’s in either division.
Prior to the prize presentations there was a welcome to
new member Carsten Becker and welcome backs for Andreas Grunenberg and
Lindsay Gailey together with farewells to Dick Heaney and Trevor Schirmer.
While home in Oz, Trevor, who will not be assisting his brother with the
reaping on the farm this time, may well be helping out part time with the
Samaritans Help Line starting on the 25th November,
for which we understand Rodney Hayes has already keyed in the phone number
on his speed dial.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven
group you can contact mobile 084 782 4582 or call in to the hotel at 185 Soi
13 between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All transportation
to the course is arranged and you do not need to sign up prior to the day,
but you should be there by 8.30 on Mondays, Wednesday, Fridays and Sundays
on the days you wish to play. A schedule of courses to be played can be
found on our web site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

PSC Fishing Trip
Paul
Langley with his queen fish.
Captain Dene
In somewhat inclement weather, seven members (minus one
late cancellation) set out on November 6 from Sattahip full of enthusiasm
and anticipation for a good day’s fishing and big bag catches.
It was a very tiring day with high winds buffeting the
boat and anglers all day. Nevertheless, we all managed hauls of between 5
and 10 kilos of the usual snapper, pla dang, grouper and a variety of other
small fish and were quite satisfied with the day.
No large fish finished up in our baskets this time, so I
have included a photo from the last monthly trip which unfortunately I could
not attend. The photo is of Paul Langley with a good sized queen fish, being
one of several large ones caught that day which included some sharks around
two feet in length. It was a successful day for all with Phil as the overall
champion.
The next monthly on December 4 is fully booked already.
This trip is likely to depart from Sattahip while the high tide and strong
winds prevail
Rich Murphy will be in charge of fishing for December and
will keep in contact with the fishing group during my absence in Australia.
Good Fishing!
