The Pattaya Floating Market donated a modified barge
on wheels to aid rescue workers dealing with massive flooding in
Bangkok.
Manager Manas Meepong said their amphibious vehicle
was transformed from an old-style Chinese barge purchased for 100,000
baht three years ago. An engine and three wheels were installed, making
it, Manas said, the first Thai-produced amphibious vehicle. He valued it
at 4 million baht.
Originally destined as a showpiece for the floating
market, the barge-on-wheels was donated to Bangkok authorities to use
for flood-relief efforts. At 10 meters long and 2.5 meters wide, the
vessel can accommodate 30 passengers on land or water. The wheels
retract when water gets too deep and the interior of the boat has a
single cabin that can house medical equipment and supplies.
