The ‘big one’ proves elusive once more
Sea Fishing with KPK Food Services
Chuck Anderson with his prize
winning catch.
Mike Gerrard
Ahoy he hearties!
It was another ‘bootiful’ day on the old briny on
Saturday, November 26. The sea was calm and the breeze blowing from land
meant we were kept cool but without big waves.
The fishing grounds we went to last time did not show any
signs of the sailfish that were abundant previously and so we spent the day
moving around looking for the best places to catch that elusive whopper.
This we did not achieve, but we did again catch an
abundance of 2 to 4 pounders of grouper and snapper along with the usual
nice sized pla dang to total something like 40 kilos of fish to take home
for the freezers.
Chuck Anderson won the KPK Food voucher with the nice
snapper pictured in the photo. We are still trying to find out what the real
name for this fish is, but we call it a blue spotted yellow fish … or was it
a yellow spotted blue fish? Don’t really matter, it was a beaut.
Next trips are 10th and 24th December and there are a few
spaces available if anyone is interested. All bait is found and tackle is
available if you do not have your own, plus transport can be arranged. All
you do is bring your own food and drink for the day.
I do have one or two people who would like to try a night
fishing trip. If anyone would like information regarding this please contact
me (Mike) on 087 091 7565. Happy hooking!

‘Reid’ all about it – Mark takes the medal
PSC golf from The Golf Club
Medal winner
Mark Reid rings the bell back at The Golf Club.
Bob Newell
Monday,
November 28,
Green Valley - Stableford
1st Paul Smith (1) 40pts
2nd Ian Brimble (9) 39pts
3rd Gary Emmett (18) 38pts
4th Karsten Kristensen (8) 38pts
5th Mark Reid (8) 37pts
It was a day for many of our boys to shoot some decent
golf, with lots of scores coming in around 34, 35 and 36 but, as can be
seen, better than handicap was required for a placing. Despite the usual
no-shows, with some highly original excuses, “I forgot”, “I didn’t set my
alarm” and perhaps the best one, “eh?”, we still managed a very healthy turn
out.
Scoring well and early in the field were Rick Bevington
and Stefan Hoge, following up closely with nice rounds too were John
‘where’s Mark Wood again’ McCall, Martin Zimmerman, Peter LeNoury, ‘Mighty
Joe’, John Emmerson and Warren Holland. Even the perennial last-groupers,
Steve ‘Rigsby’ Mulberry and Simon Philpott were pushing to get on the
podium, but, to no avail.
It was Mark ‘Lou’ Reid who nailed down the final placing
on 37 points. Mark was also the guinea pig for me attempting to use my new
camera, unfortunately, me being a complete technophobe, his shots were a lot
better than mine!
With 38 apiece it was count back time again between Gary
‘Mr Concrete’ Emmett and Karsten ‘Ping’ Kristensen. Gary’s superior back 6
‘blocked’ KK and ‘laid the foundation’ for his third spot. Second and
falling only one shot short with an excellent 39 point return was Ian
Brimble. Another nice guy, Ian’s spent time in the UK, Oz and the USA so
he’s always good for a game of ‘Name That Accent’.
That only leaves one then. Recently back from the UK it
seems like its business as usual and straight back to winning ways for Paul
Smith. Forty points, a gross 69 with 5 birdies, all I can do for all of us
struggling our way around is slightly alter a saying by Mr Spock in Star
Trek ... “It’s golf Jim, but not as we know it!”
Brad
Sproxton.

November 30, Mountain Shadow - Medal
A Flight
1st Mark Reid (8) net 68 net
2nd Paul Smith (1) net 72
3rd Steve Snelgrove (6) net 73
B Flight
1st Brad Gearie (13) net 73
2nd Martin Zimmerman (16) net 75
3rd Brad Sproxton (13) net 75
On reflection this was probably too tough a track for our
Monthly Medal, with only one guy out of a field of 33 breaking par and we
have already pencilled in a much friendlier course for our last Medal of the
year. So mop up the tears all you beaten and dejected Medal wannabe’s,
there’s always next time.
I did expect better though with a field once again packed
with low handicappers, but that number 14 hole, in particular, can wreck
anybodies card. A quick glance through the cards revealed precious few pars
but lots of 8’s, 9’s and 10’s and even two 14’s! Don’t worry John, I wont
let on!
Captain Clipboard Sproxton lost out for second spot in B
Flight when all looked promising for a long time, but (and I think I heard
it mentioned a couple of times back at the club) a 9 and 4 three putts will
do you in anytime.
Capitalising on that to take second was Martin ‘He’s been
a 16 for 3 years’ Zimmerman. Martin’s been knocking at the door a lot
recently but not quite getting there yet.
Flight winner with 73 was Brad Gearie. Now Brad has been
closing out well these last couple of weeks and must be riding high in the
Money List but, as we all know, all good things must come to an end and as
you read this he’ll be back in that pilot seat plying the Qantas routes in
the sky. The ever-generous Queenslander signed off with a drink for all the
boys and staff and we all look forward to his next visit. Safe flying mate!
That big Canadian Mountie, Stevie Snelgrove pushed hard
up in the senior flight to finish third on 73, terrific shooting when you
consider he too had a 7 and a 10 on his card. Mr West Country himself, Paul
‘get orf my land’ Smith proved once more what a class act he is out there,
with nothing higher than a 5 and a very good 72, only just missing out.
Striding away though, and I’m sure he’ll look resplendent
in his embroidered Monthly Medal Winners shirt (when he gets it!) was Mark
‘lou’ Reid. He’s another who has been turning in solid scoring, chipping
away consistently at his handicap and his 68 today was far and away the
quality performance. If that’s what stopping drinking can do for you then
maybe I should give it a try, but, then again, maybe not!
Friday, December 2,
Crystal Bay – Stableford
1st Brad Sproxton (13) 42pts
2nd Ian Brimble (9) 38pts
3rd Martin Zimmerman (16) 37pts
Last trip of the week was to the ever-improving Crystal
Bay, it looked great and it played great too. It was a nice bit of early
preparations as well for the following weeks 2 day competition, along with
Greenwood. As seems the case lately, Fridays are producing smaller fields
but don’t ask me why, just one of the quirks of golf here.
Looking over this week’s report it seems like all the
winners names were thrown into a hat and drawn out at random, so often were
the names repeated. It just goes to show what a bit of confidence can do for
your game, get one win or a couple of places and suddenly it doesn’t seem
quite as daunting.
As is normal in the ever-changing face of Pattaya’s
golfing clientele, we have to say goodbye to some in one sentence and hello
to the returnees in another. Sad and happy occasions all rolled in together
and bound by the great camaraderie the Golf Club has to offer. Here’s one
snag I’m finding about the club though, I liken it to the sand traps at
Kabinburi; very easy to get into but much more difficult to get out of!
A 3-way tie for third on 37 eventually put Martin
Zimmerman ahead of Grant Cadell and yours truly. Second and one point better
was one of the guys who is leaving, Ian Brimble. Ian generously helped
contribute to the Saturday Sore Head Club and it was nice to see him finding
form in the last week of his trip.
A founder-member of that club took home today’s spoils,
the Clipboard himself, Brad Sproxton. Every now and again Brad shows us all
what he can do and explodes from the pack to totally dominate the field and
skate away with top spot. There was no ‘Luck of the Canuck’ today, just 42
outstanding points.

Kjeld and Ken are Eastern Stars
PSC golf from the Cafe Kronborg
Kjeld Ravn, Dave Richardson & Ken Bernek.
Peter Blackburn &
The Drut
Monday,
November 28,
Eastern Star - Stableford
Thirty two people assembled at the Cafe Kronborg in
anticipation of another joust of epic proportions with the game of golf.
The starter despatched the first group at 0930 hours and
they completed the journey in four hours and thirty minutes. The weather
varied from tropical to pleasant depending when the breeze visited. The
course was in ok condition and the greens at times tested the player’s
ability.
From the white markers the scores were not expected to be
sensational and with one exception this proved to be correct. As the much
maligned philosopher Liebriel Vonschniederlip once stated “there is no
genius without a touch of madness.” Anyone who was of the opinion they were
going to rip this track to bits may well be a distant relation of the great
man.
Change room chatter revealed that Elias Magnusson was in
such tip top condition, his fitness coach said to take a couple of weeks off
training. Time would tell if efforts in the gym would benefit his game.
We welcomed Neil Skilton from Vietnam and John Iles from
Bath, Somerset in England. We also gave a big happy birthday greeting to
Ulla Ravn.
It would appear that mediocrity for some podium
placegetters was the order of the day, but to be honest the course was very
challenging.
The A flight saw Ken Bernek (let’s hear it fa Ken) show
the way with a solid thirty six points. In second place was Maurice Herberg
on thirty four points ahead of Mike Gosden on thirty three. Fourth spot went
to Don Richardson also on thirty three and Mike Winfield with twenty nine
points scrambled onto the podium.
In the B flight, Kjeld Ravn had a day out to score forty
one points and blitz the field by the biggest margin seen between first and
second since the 1992 Rottnest Island fun run. In second place Frank
Donnelly with thirty points edged out Graham Buckingham on the same score
whilst Dave Richardson on twenty nine claimed fourth spot ahead of J.C.
Lhoste’s hard fought twenty eight points.
Alas Elias’ fitness did not assist his game.
A Flight (0-20)
1st Ken Bernek (17) 36pts
2nd Maurice Herberg (11) 34pts
3rd Mike Gosden (10) 33pts
4th Don Richardson (10) 33pts
5th Mike Winfield (20) 29pts
B Flight (21+)
1st Kjeld Ravn (22) 41pts
2nd Frank Donnelly (24) 30pts
3rd Graham Buckingham (25) 30pts
4th Dave Richardson (26) 29pts
5th J.C. Lhoste (24) 28pts
Near pins went to Kjeld Ravn on the 3rd,
Don Richardson on the 6th, Frank Donnelly on the 13th
and the Phantom on the 17th.
Long putts went to Dick Braimbridge on the 9th
and Ken Bernek on the 18th.
The Coveted Compass Cap was won by Jean Pierre Malaper
who commented that “golf develops your self control”. Caddying for him
develops it even more.
Deefa once again was the happy recipient of many
donations from the generous souls in attendance for the needy of Pattaya.
Drut note: Those without a sense of humour should
consider another game in lieu of golf.

Wednesday,November
30,Green Valley –Stableford
We had 5 tee spots booked for an earlier than usual time
of 0917 hrs and 48 hours prior all places were filled and there was a
waiting list of four. All of a sudden there were cancellations from
everywhere for various reasons and we found ourselves 2 players short of the
20 we needed to take advantage of the lucrative Green Fee discount.
After a “ring around” I was able to get to our target, in
fact we ended up with 21 players who assembled at Caf้ Kronborg ready to
take off 15 minutes earlier than normal at 0800 hrs.
There were no welcomes but sadly farewells to Maurice
Herbergs & Laurina Brinn who were returning to Holland after their holiday.
Also Ernst Hansen and Leif Kirkgaard who were returning to Denmark & Iceland
respectively. We wish them all Bon Voyage and look forward to seeing them
again soon.
Departing the Kronny right on time it was only a short
ride to the course and 35 minutes later we were checking in. We were invited
to tee off 7 minutes ahead of schedule at 0910 hrs in glorious weather for
golf and it was soon obvious that the people that had decided not to play
were missing a top day on a great golf course.
Despite some heavy rain the previous day the course was
in terrific condition and although the greens had some residual sand on them
they were firm & true and at times fairly slick. There were no hold ups and
we finished our round in four hours & twenty two minutes which included a
much needed drinks break on the back nine.
There were 2 flights with A Flight for handicaps 0 to 17
and B Flight for 18 and over. We had rewards for nearest the pin on all four
par threes and longest first putts on the ninth & eighteenth greens.
Yours truly decided to take a day off from his back
physiotherapy at the hospital and the decision was vindicated as I managed
to win the A Flight on a count back from the departing Maurice Herbergs. We
both had 36 points but my back nine 20 points beat Maurice’s back nine 16
points. Dr Paul Cardwell finished in third place with 34 points.
Dr Paul’s pregnant wife Bo had a fine 38 points and won
the B Flight from Mike Winfield on 35 points, with Leif Kirkgaard finishing
third on 34 points.

Plutaluang - Stableford
Thirty six golfers signed in today looking forward to
another wonderful cultural experience. Today we were allotted the East and
South nines from the white tees and the leading group, who do not indulge in
the lunatic soup whilst in battle, covered the journey in four hours and
forty minutes.
The weather was pleasant and the course in ok condition
but the surfaces at the end of those long strips of grass hadn’t been cut
since Tiger Woods last won a tournament, which made for an interesting day.
They were as lumpy as a pensioner’s gravy, slower than a politician’s
promise coming to fruition and harder to figure out than Chinese arithmetic.
Dick Braimbridge was as happy as a pigmy in a puddle due
to a very cool putter in recent times. Time would tell if he could turn the
flat stick efforts around and gain a spot on the podium.
We welcomed Hugh O’Donnell from the USA, Bjarne
Kristansson from Iceland and Michel Catillon from France.
It turned out to be ladies day as Bo Cardwell and Chop
Daprakhon took out the flights. In the A flight Chop with a stylish thirty
seven points stood atop the podium. Second place went to Paul Cardwell with
34 points whilst Don Richardson on the same score was relegated to third.
Walter Baechli finished fourth on thirty two points and Peter Hammond
rounded out the flight on thirty one points.
The B flight saw Bo Cardwell post thirty nine points to
finish well clear of Kjeld Ravn on thirty six points whilst Graham
Buckingham was third on thirty five points. Dave Richardson on thirty four
points was fourth edging out Svende Gaard on the same score.
Alas Dick’s putter was colder than an Eskimo’s nose.
A Flight (0-21)
1st Chop Daprakhon (10) 37pts
2nd Paul Cardwell (15) 34pts
3rd Don Richardson (10) 34pts
4th Walter Baechli (17) 32pts
5th Peter Hammond (19) 31pts
B Flight (22+)
1st Bo Cardwell (38) 39pts
2nd Kjeld Ravn (22) 36pts
3rd Graham Buckingham (25) 35pts
4th Dave Richardson (26) 34pts
5th Svende Gaard (26) 34pts
Near pins went to Chop on East 2 and South 7 whilst
Bjarne Kjar on East 5 and Ken Bernek on South 4 were also successful.
Long putts went to J.C. Lhoste on East 9 and Don
Richardson on South 9
The Coveted Compass Cap was won by Dick Braimbridge who
was of the opinion he’d have more chance of dropping a ping pong ball into
an egg cup from the top of the Empire State Building during a hurricane than
he would rolling in a two foot putt.
Once again Deefa the dog snagged many donations from the
happy souls that frequent the Cafe’ Kronborg.
Drut note: The shortest will ever made. “Being of sound mind I spent all
my money”.

Tuesday,
November 29, Greenwood - P.A.G.S. Monthly Tournament
What a fantastic turnout for this year’s penultimate
tournament – 142 golfers vying for all the prizes on offer today. We thought
there might be a problem getting everybody in before dark with so many
players, but the management let us use the tenth tee for half a dozen
four-balls and this proved to be very helpful.
As usual everyone enjoyed the barbecue and prize giving
back at the clubhouse where the festivities went on well into the night. It
is still wide open at the top of the tables for this year’s overall winners
in both the men’s and ladies divisions with several players still in
contention (good luck to them all in the final round on Dec 27 at Emerald
Golf Club). If by any chance there is a tie for first place the winner will
be decided by the player who has amassed the most stableford points over the
six best rounds.
Today’s technical prizes went to the following: Longest
putts - Henry Wong & Kalani; Longest Drives - Briany Christie, Peter Lock,
Ning Neal, Jack Grinvold, Don Carmody and Yusa; Near pins in 3 shots -
Russel Exley, Briany Christie, Steve Snelgrove, Jack Grinvold; Near pins in
2 shots - Kari Kuparinen, Russel Exley, David Done, Tony Dauth, Steve

Friday, December 2, Royal
Lakeside – Stableford
We had a much smaller field today after Tuesday’s massive
turnout, so only one division. Scott Dobbins was the only player to break
par scoring 37points of his scratch handicap. Pier Cere had one near pin
while John Coetzee, who had a really good day, took the other three and also
secured second place.
Everybody agreed it was well worth the trip to play this
coarse as we found it to be in excellent condition.
1st Scott Dobbins (0) 37pts
2nd John Coetzee (18) 34pts
3rd Pier Cere (12) 32pts
Note: The Fairways Driving Range and Golf Society
is situated at the top of Pattaya Klang on Sukhumvit Road and plays every

When you read the title you probably back tracked to see
if you had started reading a true crime novel, and some people might think
that when they have finished. The scribe, ever in search of the eye catching
title, chose to highlight the performance of two society members who have
chosen to apply their trade in the Irish Garda.
The junior flight provided the man of the match in
Ireland’s very own Gerry (C.I.D.) Hughes, as evidenced by his 44 point
lashing on the field. Gerry’s score overshadowed the fine effort of fellow
Irishman Peter Wallace with 42 points, who has quickly recovered from having
an angiogram removed from his leg at the local hospital. Brian ‘Mini’ Cooper
filled the flight a further shot back to end this stay with his taxi fair to
the airport paid for.
It should not be overlooked in a vain effort to support
the above title that Irishman Kevin (detective inspector) Mcentee filled the
bronze spot in the senior flight. Barry ‘the boot’ Copestake emerged from a
quiet spell to win the sliver on 38 points, as Scotland’s favorite son Mark
Wood stood atop the flight with a solid 39 point return.
Barry Copestake, Broadmore Bob, Billy Briton, Reg McKay
and Liam McGuinness shared the 2’s pot.
Monday,
November 28,
Royal Lakeside - Stabelford
A Flight
1st Conner Doyle (13) 38pts
2nd Kevin Mcentee (8) 37pts
B Flight
1st Liam McGuinness (16) 41pts
2nd Colm Mullen (16) 34pts
The scribe had one of is his greatest dreams come true as
two of Lewiinski’s most popular players made the podium. Ireland’s Liam
McGuinness, whose 41 points was good for man of the match and top spot in B
Flight, was followed up the podium steps (at last) by good friend and Fellow
Irishman Colum Mullen on 34 points. Mind you, it needed the aid of a count
back verdict over the unlucky Jon White.
The Irish contingent continued their assault on the
podium in the flagship flight as Conner Doyle stood atop with 38 solid
points, with ‘you know who’ from Co. Offaly filling out the flight to make
it an Irish rout.
Peter Hedenburgh, whose great, great, great uncle visited
Ireland in 1672, carded the only ‘2’ of the day.
Wednesday,
November 30, Bangpra - Stableford
A Flight
1st Kevin Mcentee (8) 37pts
2nd Patrick Kelly (+2) 35pts
3rd Reg McKay (14) 34pts
B Flight
1st Eddy Beilby (16) 42pts
2nd Colum Mullen (16) 37pts
3rd Maurice Swish (17) 35pts
This midweek stint belonged to Eddy ‘the Eagle’ Beilby as
he put a 42 point lashing on the gang. Eddy was five shots clear of Colm
(can I play in B Flight please) Mullen, and a further two ahead of Maurice
Swish, of whom I can only guess his nationality.
In the senior flight it was the never ending story as
‘guess who’ topped the flight with 38 points? (I will have to stop being
rude to Kevin, he is just playing to good). Kevin’s haul was two shots clear
of Patrick ‘plus 2 handicapper’ Kelly and yet another in front of ‘Buckie’
boy Reg McKay. Alas for Patrick’s father, Peter, his acumen on the course
did not translate to the score card, as Reg had the better of the count
back.
J-P Maffrey and Terry ‘red card’ Mangan split the 2’s
pot.
Friday, December 2,
Mountain Shadow - Stableford
A Flight
1st Patrick Kelly (+2) 37pts
2nd Reg McKay (14) 33pts
3rd Peter Kelly (8) 33pts
B Flight
1st Jim Elphick (25) 36pts
2nd Lew Szigligeti (19) 35pts
3rd Merle Humphreys (19) 33pts
It was off to the always intriguing Mountain Shadow for
the final game of the week for the lads and lasses.
Plus two handicapper Patrick Kelly must have got it right
as he stood alone as the only player to better his handicap on the day.
Patrick’s 37 points was good for the man of the match and senior flight
honours. Scotland’s very own Buckie boot boy Reg McKay split the Kelly
father and son partnership as his back side score bettered Peter’s in the
resulting count back.
Jimmy ‘two shots’ Elphick was top dog in the junior
flight with a rock solid even par round. Jimmy’s total was one stroke better
than Lew ‘the thunder from down under’ Szigligeti while Merle Humphreys on
33 points was left to tidy up the flight.
Patrick Kelly, Terry Mangan, J-P Gasser and Colm Mullen
shared the 2’s pot.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi

Waite bags an ‘Ace’, Heddle on fire at the Valley
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar
Phil Waite (arms folded)
celebrates his hole in one at Khao Kheow with (from the left) Steve Plant,
Suzi Lawton and Murray Hart.
Monday,
November 28,
Khao Kheow - Stableford
With the brilliant weather continuing, the 27 Outbackers
plus a few Irish set off today to try their luck on the C & B nines. It was
a slow round as the Irish group, graciously allowed out first as they
allegedly had to dash off to the airport, probably would have missed their
flight, had it been true but it wasn’t - as they relaxed in the Khao Kheow
restaurant whilst the remainder of the groups came in. It won’t happen again
boys!
Suzi Lawton, the day’s organiser, returned to the game
after a week off and demonstrated that she had lost none of her love for the
course, with the top score of the day (37pts) taking her to the top of
division A. Matching that was Murray Hart, also with an excellent 37 and
beaten only on countback, with the ever consistent Steve Plant in third on
35.
Div B was a different story as the winners came in with
only 30 points each; Chris Thompson and Alan Ansell with Greg Hill and Bob
Lindborg one back both on 29.
All the ‘2’s came on the Island green (B8) but they were
swiftly washed away into the hazard as up stepped Phil Waite, to record his
first hole-in-one here in Thailand on the very same hole. It was reported
that it was a sweetly struck eight iron that sucked back about 10ft into the
hole but nobody really believed it; in actual fact it was a skinny old shot
that probably would have also gone into the water had the pin not got in the
way! Nonetheless, it’s still a fantastic achievement and what a great hole
to get one on, where one can clearly see the green. Great shot Phil!
Back at the bar and as is customary, Phil rang the bell
for all to enjoy.
Div A (0-17)
1st Suzi Lawton (14/Hi15.5) 37pts
2nd Murray Hart (14/Hi13) 37pts
3rd Steve Plant (14/Hi13.3) 35pts
4th Dennis Pelly (11/Hi10.8) 33pts
Div B (18+)
1st Chris Thompson (24/Hi22.7)
30pts
2nd Alan Ansell (21/Hi20.1) 30pts
3rd Greg Hill (19/Hi18.1) 29pts
4th Bob Lindborg (20/Hi19) 29pts
(From the left): John Cogan

Pattaya. C.C. – Stableford
Some 22 Outbackers at Pattaya, although not all returned
cards for inclusion in the result, so we can only suspect they were worse
that some of the rubbish we did receive, which included four scores under 20
– on this course! It has been playing difficult though and today was no
exception as the CSA (competition stableford adjustment) showed it again as
three shots harder than par.
Orn put the boys to shame, winning Div A with 36 points,
from Raji on 34 and John Cogan with 32. Aussie visitor Mick Wilks headed Div
B, also with 36 points, and PCC member Nigel Cannon was second with 34 from
Jim Payne & Laong both on 33.
There were no ‘2’s recorded today.
The big news of the day was really about the DeVere
sponsored monthly eclectic, which was due to finish today with the Turnip,
John Cogan and Chad all still in with a chance. But the Turnip kept his
nerve and even picked up yet another point as John, his nearest challenger
and playing in the same group, let a number of putts get away.
The new Eclectic (Dec) will start on Friday (2nd Dec)
with Chad’s group at PCC and will be shorter than usual because of the
Christmas period; it will finish on Friday 23rd Dec. There will be plenty of
chances to gather points though, with the Outback at Pattaya CC for the next
two holiday Mondays (5th & 12th) as well as the regular Turnip and Chad
hosted events, so step up and give it a try - just 50 Baht each time which
is then matched by DeVere at the end of the month.

Burapha –
Stableford
The C & D loops at Burapha were in the usual fine
condition, providing the 28 Outbackers with an excellent opportunity to post
a decent score. No less than four obliged with 39 points apiece, three of
them sharing the top spot in Div A; Steve Mann, Owen Walkley & John
Cunningham, who finished in that order after the usual count back operation.
Andy Makara was the fourth player on the same mark
(39pts) and with it he won Div B, two clear of newcomer, Terry Lee (37) with
another three players one further back all with 36; Messrs Hill, Mooneyham
and Lock.
In the Big Mango Properties best 6 cards to count, the
winner was Dennis Pelly with just about a wire to wire win from the late
challenge of Greg Hill, who finished runner up, one point back. The
presentation of that win has been delayed until next week, when a
representative of Big Mango Properties will be available.
There were five ‘2’s from Mark Dryden (hole 5), John
Cunningham, Bob Philp & Dennis Pelly all on hole 8 and Steve Mann on hole
17.

Friday, December 2, Green
Valley – Stableford
A full field of 34, playing in three divisions were blown
away by an outstanding round of golf from Ian Heddle, scoring 40 points off
a handicap of just 3, with a 71 gross; the next best score in his division,
who were all single figure handicappers, was a mere 32. Capt’ Bob, who
reckons his chances of playing in division B in the near future are on the
increase with his recent poor form, showed some signs of improvement with
his 28 points.
Course specialist, Jan Eriksen played well off 10 for 38
points and the Div B win, and was well clear of the second placed man, John
Locke (34), who shared the same points as Sel Wegner (welcome back) and Jack
Butler. Div C went to another Green Valley specialist, Ed Horrocks with 35
points, who beat Alan Ansell on count back with Kev Hamilton in third on 34.
There were three ‘2’s from Ian Heddle (hole 9) and Joe
Mooneyham & Jan Eriksen both on hole 12.

Joel Flor’s the field at Eastern Star
PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside
Joop, Brian & Dave, back
at Mulligans Lakeside after Thursday’s game.
Tuesday,
November 29,
Eastern Star – Stableford
Tuesday was a last chance to use the PSC vouchers &
get the good rate at Eastern Star before they predictably raise the
price for “High Season”.
As the headline suggests, it was Joel Flor (21) who
was able to best come to terms with the course & weather conditions of
the day to shoot a handicap equalling 36 points. Next best, both with 31
points were Jeff Wylie (5) & Joop (32), with Jeff edging ahead on count
back 13/10.
Near Pins were not the forte of the group with an
even split between Jeff & Banglamung Boys Home.
Thursday,
December 1,
Pleasant Valley - Stableford
Thursday saw us take the drive up Hwy 7, before
turning off to go to Pleasant Valley, where the course looked a picture,
but with a bit of breeze blowing, it was going to prove a good test from
the Blue tees, at just over 6,300 yards. No, that’s not the back tees,
as they are Black, not even the A graders at PSC tournaments can cope
with the back tees, apparently.
Showing the way again was Brian Maddox (20), who
continued his fine form from last week, with 35 points. Next best with
31 points were Dave Edwards (18) & Jeff Wylie (5), this time Dave
getting the nod over Jeff 16/13 on count back (swings & roundabouts!)
Near Pins were shared around between Willem, Dave &
Allan, with BBH getting a donation also.
Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf on Tuesday &
Thursday, with Mulligans Lakeside hosting prompt presentations on both
days. Call 089 094 1841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you
there, cheers & good golfing!

Royal Lakeside toughens up
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
Dick Warberg (right) presents
The MBMG Golfer of the Month award to Brian Parrish.
Derek Brook
Tuesday,
November 29,
Royal Lakeside – Stableford
It had been a long time since we had taken the journey to
this course, probably because it had been closed a long time while changes
were made. We wondered how the changes would affect the layout, so only one
way to find out, go there and play it!
It was not surprising that as the day got closer the
number of players reduced, drastically, it is after all a long drive,
however on the day it took less than one hour, both there and back, so even
with full roads the drive is not too bad. The roads are now so much better
than they were some years ago.
On first view, the course did not seem that much
different, it has a few new waste areas, and all in all the front nine seems
little changed. However once on the back nine you begin to see the
differences and some of the holes are quite changed and on one there is a
water hazard in front of the green where none existed before. The fairways
seem harder also. It was also noted that some of the greens were like rock
and with it being a little windy, putting was most difficult and holding the
greens at times on approach was a problem.
Tuesday’s top three with ‘The
Boss’ Pu.
This was always a course where I remember it needed a lot
of points to win, in other words it meant to me relatively easy to play. It
is now much more difficult and I expected the scores to be much lower, and
in that generally I was proved correct.
Round over it was back to the changing room where it was
seen that they had been given an overhaul and are now quite smart. The
restaurant area is also much changed and is now much more modern.
Back at Bert’s as time for the presentation approached it
was noted that it was also time for the MBMG Golfer of The Month and by the
time this day had arrived the result was already decided as one golfer had
had a great month. So, on the day, the winner of the day with 42 points was
your correspondent, with Walter Baechli close behind in second with 40
points. Then we went back several points to Mike Gaussa in third with 33
points and in fourth we had a count back on 32 points that saw Mashi Kaneta
in fourth and Graham Buckingham in fifth with Bernie Cairns just losing out.
Near Pins went to Jack Robertson, Mashi Kaneta, Tony
Berry and Alan Sullivan.
The MBMG Golfer of The Month, as already said, was decided before the day
started and by a long way, the winner was Brian Parrish. Well done Brian.

Sus reclaims the caddy
and top spot
PSC golf from The Three Sisters Bar
Winner Sus Ige (left) with
runner-up Bobby Clark.
The golfers showed up early as usual at the Pattaya
Country Club this 30 November and were very disappointed having to wait for
the late arrival of the golf carts (again!).
Teeing off in the fog was no problem with the caddies
seeing every bad shot. Sus made a rare appearance and took his caddy back
from Herbie and Herbie’s game went downhill from there.
Back at the Caddyshack 2 the cards were turned in and Sus
Ige came in first with 39 points and only 22 putts. Arnold van de Graaf and
Bobby Clark were tied for second on 37 points, with Bobby winning second on
the count back. Further back were Billy Thompson and Larry Emerson with 34
points each.
Another great feed was provided by Herbie at Caddyshack 2
after play.
JJ beats the Chairman
on count back
The Backyard Golf Society
JJ celebrates his win with the staff outside
Kisses Bar.
We had a good turnout last week for the Backyard Golf
Society’s trip to Emerald Golf Course on December 2. Ten players with nine
in all competitions but with the scores surprisingly low it made for a very
competitive round of golf.
With JJ not having won for a few weeks it was about time
he stepped up, and much to the Chairman’s disappointment this was the week.
All tied at the end of the round on 32 points, JJ beat ‘Broken Wing’ on the
19 to 17 count back and also took (8) skins.
Nearest the pin went to Neville and the remaining skin
results were as follows: Neville (4), Andy C (3), Micky (1), Dan M (1) and
Broken Wing (1).
Finally just as a reminder to all members, we make our
own rules and what good are they if we do not, as a group, all stand by
them. So let’s have a bit of unity and enjoy ourselves on our weekly get
together.
Donahue’s happy return
Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC) at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
The Pattaya Golf Society began the final week of November
with a trip to Pleasant Valley on Monday, 28th, to play a stableford
competition on the tight and testing course where accuracy has to be the
watchword on the back nine. The day was fine and the course generally well
appointed.
Competition was close and in third place was Ken Page,
making his first appearance in the frame with PGS and his 33 points showed
the results of a long session on the practice range after a poor showing
last time out. In second was Mr Len, his excellent month continuing with
another good return of 34 points. The winner, on his return to Pattaya was
American golfer Stephen Donahue whose 35 points would have been better if he
had not drifted into oblivion for three holes on the front nine.
The only birdie ‘2’ of the day was the effort of Robbie
Taylor on the fifth hole and the Booby Bevy went to J๘rn Eriksen for his low
score of the day. The week had started well at the PGS.
Scot wins on St. Andrew’s
Day
Wednesday, 30th November was St Andrew’s Day, a day when
all Scots celebrate. On that day the Pattaya Golf Society visited Treasure
Hill to play a stableford competition and the field saw the inclusion of a
couple of Scots for good measure. The course was in reasonable condition but
tee boxes are being renovated at present so the course is not quite as
pristine as it usually is.
With the field divided into two flights at nineteen and
under the group got underway on time and it very soon became clear that
Treasure Hill would live up to its reputation as a tough course to crack.
In the second flight “Player of the Month” Mr Len again
had a share of the spoils with his 29 points matching those of Roy Bassett
for second place, two behind lady golfer Orawan Meeraka and her splendid 31
points score.
In the top flight Stu Thompson found some vestiges of his
former form with a fine 33 points for third. In second place was “Banjo”
Bannister again coming good with 36 points. But it was a day for all things
Caledonian and Scot Dave Milne treated himself to a 37 point score made in
part by his birdie two on the seventeenth which brought him four points.
The Booby Bevy went to Sam McLellan for his lacklustre
round and the presentation at Rabbi’s in Soi Buakhao ended with some of the
golfers sampling some delightful Isle of Skye malt in deference to the day.
Cheers Dave!

Magical Murtagh’s monopoly
Phoenix Tuesday/Friday Golf Group
Eamon Murtagh (3rd right)
celebrates with the staff at the Relax Bar.
Mike Gerrard
It was the end of the month’s stroke play competition for
the Trattoria Italiana voucher prize and on a day that looked like it could
threaten to rain, we set off on the Ocean/Mountain course. Gladly the rain
passed away from us and we enjoyed a rather hot day, but very pleasant.
Stroke play always sorts out the men from the boys and it
is usually the more consistent player that wins the day. Big Eamon Murtagh
just edged out John Bartley who both recorded net 72’s (level par). Third
place went to Richard Baldwin with net 74.
Eamon’s win can only be considered an act of God. When on
the 17th par three he sunk a monstrous chip from off the green to record a
birdie two. So much in awe of this shot was yours truly who had hit a tee
shot to 4 foot that I missed the birdie putt.
So for the second week running the two boys from the
‘auld country’ took first and second place. John Bartley decided that he had
had enough photos taken of him this year so he left Eamon to the mercy of
most of the lovely staff of the Relax Bar.
The near pin winners were Goort Gelten and yours truly
(who missed this birdie from 4 foot).
So with 2 near pins not won this meant that we had 5
lucky draw prizes for the day. Due to the fact that 3 players did not return
to the presentation we had five players left who had not won anything and
therefore they all received something. The free massage donated by the Relax
Bar went to Joe Miller once again. I think Joe has won two of these on this
trip to fun city.
Next week we play a straight forward stableford and the
week after we play for the KPK Food Services voucher. Call me on 087 091
7565 if interested in golf or fishing.

Arnold ‘Boeing’ Jones
takes off with fine win
Travellers Rest Golf Group
Arnold Jones.
Tim Dalton.
Having been there or thereabouts for the last few weeks,
former Boeing pilot AJ finally soared to the summit with a run(a)way success
last week and a turbulence free score of 36 points, leaving the rest of the
field in his vapour trail at the very tricky Mountain Shadow. Special
mention must also go to Michael Prideaux who was victorious on 2 occasions
winning at Emerald on Tuesday and Phoenix on Thursday.
It is great to see so many players turning out on a
regular basis and a lot of this is down to the great organising from Fergus
who once again put on a great week’s golf for 30+ players. It is certainly
not an easy task to get everyone to the tee on time and everyone organised
and I am pretty sure that the reason that so many golfers enjoy playing with
the Travellers Rest Golf Group is that it is so well run.

Raivo rules at Green Valley
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Monday, November 28, Green
Valley – Stableford
Surprisingly enough we arrived at the clubhouse and the
car park was empty, this does not normally happen here, and despite having
12 groups instead of the initial 10 booked, we were able to tee-off without
any delay. There were four divisions out today with the cut at 6-15, 16-20
and 21+, and of course the ladies.
There were a couple of sanded greens throughout the
course but this did not reflect in the scores. Playing off 9, the Estonian
legend with an unorthodox swing, Raivo Velsberg, won division 1 with a fine
42 points. Mike Missler took second place with 38 and Chris Voller shot a
‘paltry’ 37 points to claim third.
The Frog has returned and Jean Morel topped division 2
with 39 points ahead of Ritchie Martin in second one point behind and Dave
Edwards in third with 37.
Still in form and waiting to be cut, Paul Chabot won
division 3 with 38 points, Richard Kings was second one point behind and
Evan Millar took third after beating Jef van Uffelen on an 18/16 back nine
count back with both players scoring 36 points.
Orawan Meeraka took out the ladies comp with 27 points
and Yuza Reginiussen was second on 25.
Near pins went to Chris Voller (3), Eugine Maguire,
Stuart Thompson, Mike Lewis, Andy Baber, Josie Monks and Joe Kubon.
There were no rollovers in the ‘2’s in either division
and with 3 birdies on the 9th hole Kari Kuparinen, Stuart Thompson and Raivo
Velsberg shared the kitty in the top tier, and Bryan Rought was the only
winner in division 2 with a birdie on the 4th, he was happy at last!
Wednesday,
November 30,
Greenwood -
Stableford
We were scheduled for the B and A courses today, the C
nine we have not played for many months, but the greens on the selected 18
which we were playing today are in fantastic shape. There were quite a few
remarks after 18 holes on the condition of the course and everyone enjoyed
themselves today. There were three divisions out for the men and the cut was
made at 6-15, 16-22 and 23 plus.
Playing off 5 and with 17 points on the front nine and a
gross 35 on the back nine, Barry Welling topped division 1 with 39 points, a
great round Barry! Still in form, Sassa returned 38 points to take second
place and Chris Voller beat Marty Rock on a 21 /20 count back for third
after they both came in with 37 points.
On the podium yet again, ‘Count back’ Burnie won division
2 with 38 points while Bryan Rought was second after beating Jimmy Johnson
on a 19/18 back nine count back with both on 35 points.
Paul Chabot, still in form with a reducing handicap each
week, took out division 3 with 36 points ahead of Marty Aronson in second on
33, who in turn beat the Australian entrepreneur Ian Plummer on a 17/14 back
nine count back.
Near pins were claimed by Tyge, Raivo Velsberg, Barry
Welling, Paul Chabot, Ian Plummer and Jimmy Johnson.
In the ‘2’s, Barry Welling birdied A6 on the back nine to
take the only pot in division 1, while Mauri Friman got a two on B2 for the
only birdie in division 2.
Friday, December 2,
Eastern Star - Stableford
The greens here had been slightly sanded but were the
slickest we had experienced for a long time. It was a very warm day with a
very slight breeze on occasions coming from the West, which is unusual for
here.
Thirty five points was the best return of the day from
Joe Kubon who won division 2. Norman McKinnon took second one point behind
and Mike Lewis was third with 33.
The equal cut today was 6-16 in division 1 and 17+ in the
second. Mr. Zig Zag, Cully Monks top scored in division 1 with 33 points
with Chris Voller second two points behind and Frank Kelly in third with 30.
Noi Emmerson was the winner of the ladies division with
31 points.
There were no ‘2’s in any division today so with a
holiday round here at Eastern Star on the 5th and a
two person scramble on the 9th, the rollovers will
commence again on Friday December 16.
Near pins today went to Georges Faber, Walter Webber,
Chris Voller, Les Smith (2), Noi Emmersson and Andy Baber.
Finally, there was a warm welcome back to the mad dentist, Les Smith, who
has been in the UK for the last 8 months for reasons unknown. Welcome home
Les!

Planet Football donates 120,000 Baht to Orphanage
Preparations for the football
party take place.
Phil Larkin
On Wednesday, November 16, representatives of Planet
Football on Siam Country Club Road went to Ban Si Ban Keow Special Needs
Orphanage and School to donate 120,000 baht.
Owner Martin Kinsella and his Planet Football team
travelled down to donate the money after hearing about the great work that
is being done there by Boonchu Muangthonthani. The donation was made due to
the surplus left from sponsorship raised by Pattaya’s finest football
establishment.
Although, Ban Si Ban Keow opened just two years ago, the
numbers attending have risen from 12 to 70 children. This has seen a
dramatic rise in costs and Planet Football’s donation will go a long way to
ensuring the safety and well being of all those who need it most.
Martin Kinsella from Planet
Football presents the children from Ban Si Ban Keow with a cheque for
120,000 baht.
Planet Football provided equipment so that a tournament
could take place and children of all ages and abilities could take part with
assistance from their highly skilled coaches. It was especially moving for
some of them and owner, Martin Kinsella said, “It brings a tear to your eye
when you see how much difference something like this can bring to the local
community. Coming here has made me appreciate what I have and I would
encourage, and recommend, others to do the same.”
Boonchu Muangthonthani thanked Mr. Kinsella and his team
with gifts made by the children. Khun Boonchu proclaimed: “Without the help
and support of people like Martin, and organisations like Planet Football,
we would not be able to care for those who need it most. We rely heavily on
the generosity of others and are looking forward to building and developing
our relationship with Planet Football in the months and years to come.”
In the words of an ex-Sky Sports football commentator,
‘Take a bow, Planet Football, take a bow!’

Pattaya City take a
hammering in Bangkok
Bangkok Casuals International League 2011/12
Paul Frain
Pattaya City Football Club traveled to Bangkok last
weekend to play the league leaders Anatolia, a team that City had not beaten
in their last five meetings.
Despite this poor record, City attacked from the start of
the match and a crisp header by captain Craig Banks slammed against the
Anatolia post and soon after a shot by City’s Paul Fox hit the bar with the
Anatolia keeper well beaten. Appeals were then turned down for a City
penalty as two Anatolia players appeared to handle the ball, but play was
waved on.
After weathering the early onslaught Anatolia came back
into the match and with what appeared to be a foul on a City defender, with
an elbow to the face that led to the player needing treatment, it opened up
the City defense and led to the first Anatolia goal.
City again hit the post and a good run by Tshuma down the
right wing saw his centre flash across the face of the goal with no one to
apply the finishing touch.
Anatolia then broke clear at the other end and doubled
their lead when a through-ball carved open a static Pattaya defense to make
it 2-0. Another City chance went begging when Paul Fox sent over an inch
perfect centre, but it was blasted over the bar, and it left the score at
2-0 at half time.
Anatolia turned up the heat after the interval and went
further ahead when City defender Yvon Prisco stuck out his foot and could
only divert the harmless long range shot into his own net to make the score
3-0. The same player had the chance to pull a goal back at the other end of
the field, but in front of an open goal he completely missed his kick, and
when Paul Fox did put the ball in the net for City he was flagged for
offside.
Anatolia put the game out of reach soon after when their
forward went through unchallenged to slot the ball past the City keeper.
City missed another chance when with the Anatolia goalkeeper went AWOL but
nobody could get a toe to the ball to put it into the net.
The home team added to City’s woes with another goal to
make it 5-0 before Dipita beat three Anatolia players to score a consolation
goal to make the final score 5-1.
It was just not City’s day and the little bit of luck was
missing on a very small and narrow pitch, but they will need to dust
themselves down, take a deep breath and start winning these important
matches.
City Reserves
share the spoils
Pattaya City Reserves played their first competitive
league match against Iplay at the Thai Polo Club last weekend, playing on
the biggest pitch in the league.
Early on, the experienced Iplay were restricted to taking
long shots from outside the area, while their defense comfortably dealt with
any attacks the City forwards could muster. But midway through the first
half a superb ball from Glen Wilkins put centre-forward Chris Burt through
and his perfect lob over the keeper put City 1-0 up.
Iplay tried to get on level terms but again the City
defense held, and the visitors wasted their good build-up play with some
wasteful finishing.
City Reserves went further ahead when a corner was only
half cleared and Conner O’Callaghan picked up the loose ball on the right
before beating two players to cross the ball over to a teammate who headed
home to make it 2-0. With half time looming it was a good time to score and
City’s keeper did not have a save to make in the first half.
Iplay came out after the interval full of confidence that
they could turn the result around and they attacked the City Reserves’ goal
relentlessly, but again the shots were high or wide. The visitors then hit
the City post and moments later managed to pull a goal back after a good
interchange between their forwards, to make it 2-1.
A few minutes later Iplay equalized with a scrappy goal
to make it 2-2, and then could have won it when a diving header went just
wide. City Reserves were overwhelmed in the second half due on the large
pitch proving very tiring, but with some good team spirit they were able to
hold on and secure a valuable point.
