Cheap & cheerful Chonburi
PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside
Tuesday, Feb. 21, Khao
Kheow - Stableford
Tuesday was a trip to possibly the best course in the
area, a good test, but not unfair, great vistas on every hole, what more
could you ask for? Today, our test was to be the A & B combination, (the
best combo IMHO) and we were not disappointed.
![](pic/s21-Mulligans.jpg)
Joel Flor.
Showing how it should be done on this day was Joel Flor
(H/cp 23) who has been struggling with his game a bit of late, but today was
a different story. Joel signed for a solid 39 points, with Bob Lindborg (21)
hanging on to finish with 33 points and second spot.
Near pins were picked up by Joel, Bob & Monte with 2.
Thursday, Feb. 23, Royal
Lakeside
Thursday we made the trek towards Bangkok, veering left
just before the Bangprakong River to play the recently revamped Royal
Lakeside. The course has undergone some transformations, with several new
holes, while others have had green renovations, water features added and the
clubhouse facilities upgraded to a very high level. The course still retains
its open feel, but wayward shots may incur a heavier penalty than before the
renovations.
On this day it was Monte Sykes (H/cp 7) who had a bit of
a day out, with a consistent 38 points (19 on each 9) to easily lead the
way, ahead of Willem Lasonder (22) who edged Clive Hoseason (28) out of
second on count back after both signed for 33 points.
Near pins were secured by Bob, Willem & Monte with 2.
Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf on Tuesday &
Thursday, with ML hosting prompt presentations on both days. Call 0890941841
for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers & good golfing!

Batty gets the better of Bangprakong
IPGC golf from The Links
Jon Batty
Sunday, Feb. 19, Pattaya
C.C. – Stableford
Twenty-four players made the short trip this week, which
meant the usual two divisions with the cut coming at 0-15 and 16+. With the
tee boxes placed well back for an earlier competition, the course was
playing long off the whites, and with the greens beginning to show signs of
wear and tear, most players struggled to match par.
![](pic/s8-Links.jpg)
Yasou Suzuki – winner at
Green Valley.
In the A flight, Richard Hurley, aided by some booming
drives that made short work of the longer course, was the only player to
match par, scoring 36 points off his 7 handicap. Joe Peters and your
correspondent were split for second and third only by virtue of a count back
after both carded 32 points.
Scoring was a little easier in the B flight, with Andy
Galvin once again topping the division with 39 points, closely followed by
Michael Byrne and Sean Hallahan.
A diluted ‘2’s pot was shared by Richard Hurley, Frank
McGowan, Keith Woolley, Sean Hallahan and Michael Byrne.
A Flight
1st Richard Hurley (7) 36pts
2nd Joe Peters (15) 32pts
3rd Jon Batty (9) 32pts
B Flight
1st Andy Galvin (19) 39pts
2nd Michael Byrne (20) 37pts
3rd Sean Hallahan (18) 35pts
Tuesday, Feb. 21, Green
Valley - Stableford
With a number of holiday makers taking one last
opportunity to play another course, a slightly disappointing field of 18
players travelled to Green Valley, meaning only one flight. The course, as
always, was in excellent condition from tee to green, and with rumours of
imminent changes at Pattaya Country Club, the decision was taken to move our
regular Sunday venue back to Green Valley from 4th March.
The conditioning of the course, combined with benign
conditions meant scoring, on the whole, was good, with well over half the
field scoring 30+ points.
With 4 places up for grabs, and 3 players tied for third
place on 35 points, someone had to miss out on the count back, and that
“honour” went to Jon Batty who could only manage 17 on the back 9. Mark
Stanley fared one better with 18, but the 3-way mini comp was won by Phil
Groves, whose 19 point haul secured third place overall. Russell Exley
showed some return to form, carding 36 points off his 8 handicap, but
victory went to returning Japanese Yasou Suzuki, who with 37 points, was the
only player to break par.
The scribe had some consolation for missing out in the
count back, as he registered the only ‘2’ of the day.
1st Yasou Suzuki (11) 37pts
2nd Russell Exley(8) 36pts
3rd Phil Groves (9) 35pts
4th Mark Stanley (12) 35pts
Thursday, Feb. 23,
Bangpakong - Stableford
Again, due to many regulars playing in a senior
competition today and a couple of late cancellations, a much reduced field
of 10 players took the tollway up to Bangpakong. This was your
correspondent’s first visit here, and I must say I was very impressed with
the course in general, despite teeing off nearly 30 minutes late due to a
large slow group in front of us.
The course is in excellent condition, with a gentle
opening few holes before water comes into play. The greens are extremely
true and of a fair pace. The only real criticism would be the lazy indexing
of the course, with the par 5’s being 1 to 4 and the par 3’s indexed at 15
to 18, despite 3 of them measuring around the 200 yard mark!
Playing off the whites at nearly 6,700 yards, and with
the temperature hot and humid to begin with and a strong breeze picking up
later on, it was always going to be a tough challenge, and so it proved with
only one person playing to his handicap. This happened to be your
correspondent, playing his best round yet in Thailand, who carded a gross 75
for 42 points, bogeying three of the last four holes in the process.
Three players were tied a full 8 points back; Yasou
Suzuki taking second place by virtue of a 19 point back 9, ahead of Mike
Korney (18) and Richie Hurley (16).
he scribe again scored the only ‘2’ of the day.
1st Jon Batty (9) 42pts
2nd Yasou Suzuki (11) 34pts
3rd Mike Korney (19) 34pts
4th Richie Hurley (7) 34pts
Note: The Links depart from the hotel on Soi
Buakhao at 9.30am on Tuesdays and Thursdays and 10.00am for Rayong Green
Valley every Sunday. Sign up at the hotel or contact Jon on 080 021 1034. A

It’s simplicity for Sim
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s
Sunday, Feb. 19, Green
Valley - Stableford
A Flight
1st John Ryan (8) net 70
2nd Bob Newell (7) net 71
3rd Gary Blackburne (7) net 72
B Flight
1st Geoff Bracegirdle (18) net 67
2nd Gabriel Enright (16) net 69
3rd Shay Mitchell (21) net 70
Red Flight
1st Sim Davis (26) net 65
Near Pins: No 4 Bret Chan; No 9 Gabriel Enright;
No 12 Thierry Petrement; No 16 Colm Mullen.
![](pic/s10-Lewiin%201.jpg)
Sim Davis.
Geoff Bracegirdle started out a fine week with the
biggest prize of the month, the cut-crystal vase emblematic of the monthly
medal for February 2012. Geoff’s net 67 was two clear of Gabriel Enright.
The flight’s bronze medal winner Shay Mitchell needed the aid of a count
back as he emerged from a three-way pile up over the Donkey and Colm Mullen.
In the premier flight John Ryan saw his net 70 to be one
clear of ‘Broad more’ Bob and a further stroke clear of Gally Blackburne.
But it was the Red Flight that produced the top score of
the day as the society’s first lady Sim Davis made it look relatively simple
with a stunning net 65.
As all our regular readers are aware Sim and Geoff
advance to the gold medal that is held later in the year.
The lord Mayor of Dublin led the way with a brace in the
2’s along with nine other players.
Monday, Feb. 20, Royal
Lakeside – Stableford
A Flight
1st Reg McKay (14) 36 pts
2nd Francis Goyons (9) 34pts
3rd Joe Browne (15) 33pts
B Flight
1st Willie Harty (18) 36pts
2nd Brian Kaht (21) 35pts
3rd Fergus O’Brien (26) 34pts
It was time for the society to visit old friend Royal
Lakeside and enjoy some of the road constructions which seem to dominate the
northern corridor.
![](pic/s10-Lewiin%202.jpg)
Reg McKay.
Reg McKay certainly showed no ill effects from the
slightly longer drive as he led the senior flight and co-man of the match
home with a even par round. “I told you they had toughened it up” Reg was
two clear of Francis Goyons and yet another in front of Joe Browne.
Willie Harty led B Flight with the same even par round
and collected a share of man of the match. Brian Kaht was a shot adrift for
the second spot. Fergus O’Brien, as he has often done, wrenched the third
place loot from Jimmy Bell under the guise of count back. Francis Goyons and
J-P Maffray split the 2’s pot.
Wednesday, Feb. 22, St.
Andrews - Stableford
A Flight
1st Reg McKay (14) 39pts
2nd Francis Goyons (9) 36pts
3rd Pierre Bietry (15) 36pts
B Flight
1st Geoff Bracegirdle (18) 36pts
2nd Mike Lenihan (17) 36pts
3rd Pat Culloty (21) 35pts
Wednesday’s venue was the intriguing construct of Desmond
Muirhead. If it had not been the week of the monthly medal, Scotland’s
‘Buckie boot boy’ Reg McKay would definitely have been awarded the title
slot with his two wins in two games with the society. Reg posted an
excellent 39 points to take top spot in A Flight and man of the match, and
he was also the only player to better par. Francis Goyons and Pierre ‘the
magician’ Bietry finished in that order as dictated by count back as both
tied on even par rounds.
Geoff Bracegirdle and Mike Lenihan tied atop B Flight but
Mike didn’t calculate the count back favorably. Irishman Pat Culloty’s 35
points sealed the third spot.
Reg MacKay and Andre Fortis split the 2’s pot.
Friday, Feb. 24, Mountain
Shadow - Stableford
A Flight
1st Matt Trimbrell (11) 36pts
2nd Reg McKay (14) 35pts
3rd Colm Mullen (15) 34pts
B Flight
1st Torben Nielsen (30) 35pts
2nd Geoff Bracegirdle (18) 35pts
3rd Mike Lenihan (22) 30pts
A good sized field took on the toughest par 72 layout
around - Mountain Shadow. The scores on the day reflected the difficulty of
the course that sports the toughest set of par fives.
A Flight was won with an even par 36 points by Matt
Trimbrell, which also proved to be the best on the day. Matt was followed up
the podium steps by the man on fire Scotland’s ‘Bukie boy’ Reg McKay and the
‘Lord mayor of Dublin’ Irishman Colm Mullen stringed out in single figure
digits and in that order.
Torben Nielsen and Geoff Bracegirdle led the B Flight.
The order of ascent was determined on count back as both were locked on 35
points but Torben supported the biggest smile. Two players were mixed up at
30 points but the count back sorted it out favorably for Mike Lenihan as
Sean Soden was left in a daze.
Reg McKay and Rick Maker split the 2’s pot.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi
1, Beach Road Soi 13/3 near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with
us just pop in and add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764.

Greig takes commanding lead
Bunker Boys @ The Bowling Green
Monday, Feb. 20, Royal
Lakeside - Stableford
A smaller turnout than usual today for the slightly
longer trip to the Royal Lakeside course. This venue seems to be developing
into one of those courses that golfers either love or hate. Nobody can
criticize the layout or condition of the course, but many don’t like the
soft sand in the bunkers, or the hard unreceptive greens.
![](pic/s11-Bunker.jpg)
Colin Greig relaxes before
one of his winning rounds.
The course certainly suited Gordon Melia, who made a
welcome (and long overdue) return to form to comfortably win the honours on
the day. Gordon’s handicap had been in danger of slipping to be higher than
his wife’s, but hopefully he’s now halted the slide.
PJ Redmond also made a long overdue return to the podium,
and there was a rumour that this was enough to put him in a good mood, but
unfortunately it (the rumour) couldn’t be confirmed.
1st Gordon Melia (18) 37pts
2nd PJ Redmond (23) 33pts
3rd Colin Grieg (10) 33pts
Near Pins: Barry Murnin, Geoff Parker, Ken Young
and Tim Winder
Wednesday, Feb. 22,
Treasure Hill – Stableford
Following lobbying from some of our senior members, the
decision was made to play this brute of a course off the yellow tees, rather
than our normal white tees. The shorter course distance was reflected in a
general improvement in the scoring, with four players equaling or bettering
their handicaps.
Colin Greig continued his run of good form to win the A
flight, despite trying his best to “blob” the 18th
hole, eventually putting onto the green from 30 yards off, and securing the
single point necessary to take the honours.
Gordon Melia also continued his new found form to win the
B flight on a count back over Gez Williams.
We also welcomed back dave Keats after a long spell in
the UK, and he made a winning return, taking 3rd place
in the B flight and a near pin.
A Flight
1st Colin Greig (10) 37pts
2nd Dave Ashman (16) 36pts
3rd Rab McDonald (15) 34pts
B Flight
1st Gordon Melia (18) 36pts
2nd Gez Williams (20) 36pts
3rd Dave Keats (25) 33pts
Near Pins: Colin Greig, Dave Keats, Rab McDonald
and Tim Winder
Friday, Feb. 24, Bangpra -
Stableford
Our slightly later tee time than usual seemed to suit a
number of players, with over half the field of 20 players scoring more than
30 points. The course was in good shape, with the usual slick greens
catching out many unwary players. Starting from the 10th
tee, the pace of play was slow, but not ridiculously so, and the round was
completed in a little over four and a half hours.
Colin Greig and Rab McDonald both had tremendous back
nine scores of 24 points, but there’s no stopping Colin at the moment as he
continued his inexorable push towards the Golfer of the Month title. Colin
has recorded 3 wins, a second and a third place in the last five rounds and
is surely now uncatchable.
A Flight
1st Colin Greig (10) 39pts
2nd Rab McDonald (15) 36pts
3rd Geoff Parker (16) 34pts
B Flight
1st Gez Williams (20) 37pts
2nd Mike Corner (22) 35pts
3rd Geoff Hart (22) 35pts
Near Pins: Colin Greig, Bruce Gladden, Vic Barton
and William Macey.
Following the recent demise of the Bunker Bar, the Bunker
Boys now play out of the Bowling Green on Soi X-Zyte between Pattaya 3rd
Road and Soi Buakhaow. We play three times per week on Mondays, Wednesdays,
and Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out, and a friendly but competitive
golf competition why come and join us. We meet at the Bowling Green at 9
a.m. for breakfast and transportation, and new players with valid handicaps
are always welcome. For more information call Dave on 087 1469978, email

Girl power at Pattaya Country Club
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar
Monday, Feb. 20, Khao
Kheow – Stableford
A & B have always been the favorite nines at Khao Kheow
and for the 33 players here today, the course was truly at its resplendent
best with the No 1 hole on A just inviting us all to come and have a hit, as
it lay empty with no players to be seen on the whole loop.
![](pic/s12-Outback.jpg)
Paul Bourke.
We teed off on time with regrettably a five-ball at the
back as three guys failed to show, with the Sugar Shack group hot on our
heels. The weather was superb and the greens were as good as it gets, as
fast and true as they have been for some time.
The leading group could be seen leaving their seventeenth
hole, B8 the par 3 island green, as our last group completed another par 3
across the lake, B3 with the rest of the groups strung out in between and
maybe a couple of them taking a little longer than they should have, but all
in all in was a reasonable pace of around 4 hours 15 minutes.
Owen Walkley in a serious match with his good friend Jeff
Warner, not only cleaned him out but also took the honours in Div A with
38pts from Raji (36). Div B’s scoring was ordinary to say the least as Steve
Plant’s 34pts was enough to win on count back from Conor Doyle. Sakorn, who
hasn’t been on top of the podium for a few months, got it right today for
her 38pts to win Div C from Shay Mitchell on 35.
The ample liquid inducements always associated with the
welcoming back of John Lawton (21pts), contributed greatly to his playing
partners’ demise as well as his own; the General (21pts), Neil Lavery
(19pts), Bob Cannon (21pts) and eventually his wife, Suzi; although she did
score 18 on the front.
There were four ‘2’s from Steve Plant & Sakorn on A5 and
Steve Mann & Dennis Pelly on B8.
Div A (0-13)
1st Owen Walkley (11/Hi10.7) 38pts
2nd Amarjit Banwaitt (7) 36pts
3rd Dennis Pelly (12/Hi11.2) 35pts
Div B (14-18)
1st Steve Plant (15/Hi13.5) 34pts
2nd Conor Doyle (14/Hi12.7) 34pts
3rd John O’Keefe (17/Hi15.6) 32pts
Div C (19+)
1st Sakorn Pramoolchart (24/Hi25.6)
38pts
2nd Shay Mitchell (23/Hi20.7) 35pts
3rd Brian Maddox (22/Hi20.4) 32pts
Monday, Feb. 20, Burapha –
Stableford
There were 38 players on the C & D nines and add that to
another 33 at Khao Kheow, it was another great day for golf at the Outback.
Only a short report from Burapha today, as our Capt’ was
too embarrassed to write about his Div A win. Well actually, he did write
about it but the editor, who has the final word on what is and is not
published, decided it wasn’t suitable reading material! Too much detail
about his wonderful shots and how good his chipping was, which is something
that could not be verified and is unlikely to be true given his recent form.
Keith Miller took second just one shot back on 37 and Colin Goon headed
three on 35, to take third place.
Pete Stonebridge has a liking for this course, making the
equal top score of the day, 39pts to win Div B, and he shared the honour
with John Urquart, the Div C winner, with that being John’s first ever win
at the Outback. Other notables include Barry Ennis (37pts) and Roy Studds
with an excellent 37 playing off a handicap cap of two shots (max 36
permitted).
There were four ‘2’s; John Player on C5, Greg Hill & Bob
Lindborg on C8 and John H O’Keefe on D8.
Div A (0-16)
1st Bob Philp (11/Hi11.3) 38pts
2nd Keith Miller (16/Hi15.1) 37pts
3rd Colin Goon (3/Hi3.8) 35pts
Div B (17-20)
1st Pete Stonebridge (17/Hi16.5)
39pts
2nd Barry Ennis (17/Hi16.2) 37pts
3rd Stuart McKenzie (19/Hi18.4)
36pts
Div C (21+)
1st John Urquart (32/Hi30) 39pts
2nd Roy Studds (36) 37pts
3rd Ivan Plunkett (21/Hi19.9) 36pts
Tuesday, Feb. 21, Pattaya
C.C. – Stableford
On this fine morning, there were 20 Outbackers playing in
the regular Tuesday competition at this local course. We welcomed a party of
seven Australians, four of whom were all related, here on holiday and we
wished goodbye for a while to Wayne Cotterell and his delightful lady,
Sunanta.
The course was busy but we were away on time with rounds
of about 4ฝ hours and with 20 players plus we had 2 divisions with three
places, plus the ‘2’s comp.
In ‘A’ division it was one our Aussie friends Geoff
Bracegirdle (17) who came in top with 34 points, whilst Noy Kamsantia (20) –
the PCC caddy - and Nigel Cannon (today’s organiser) playing off 21, both
came in with 31pts with Noy getting the nod on count back.
The ladies took all three places in ‘B’ division –
leading was Sunanta Duangwaw (36) with 41 points, leaving her best round
until last and she asked any winnings should be given to a local charity –
Thanks Sunanta!
In second place was the regular ex-caddy at PCC, Laong
Gatepratum (25) with 39 points and she had the only ‘2’ of the day on the
challenging 16th hole, which was worth a massive 5pts. Seesa Phompinmon (30)
took third spot with 36 points.
We were delighted to see the regular Tuesday organiser
our ‘Chad’ Barry Chadbourn at the course having a ride round and a chat
following his recent surgery.
Just to follow up on further developments regarding the
up-coming closure of the front nine holes here at PCC, the word is that the
front nine will be closed on 16th March for course
improvements and re-open again at the start of the high season (around 1st
Nov). We are then advised the course will remain as 18 holes throughout the
high season until this time next year, when it will close again to do the
back nine in the same kind of time frame. We have not been told yet, what
the green fees will be or what will happen to the memberships.
Div A (0-21)
1st Geoff Bracegirdle (17/Hi18.2)
34pts
2nd Noy Kamsantia (20/Hi19.8) 31pts
3rd Nigel Cannon (21/Hi22.4) 31pts
Div B (22+)
1st Sunanta Duangwaw (36) 41pts
2nd Laong Gatepratum (25/Hi24.3)
39pts
3rd Phompinmon Seesa (30/Hi28.5)
36pts
Wednesday, Feb. 22,
Treasure Hill – Stableford
After talking to the manager here we were informed that
we couldn’t have more than 30 players as they didn’t have enough caddies, so
after a few desperate phone-calls we sent three groups to Greenwood.
Twenty-nine ended up teeing off here, going out in
five-balls a little earlier than usual at 9.30, as Capt’ Bob, who was on his
way to the course giving his friends bike a little run, managed to take a
wrong turn and arrived embarrassingly late, much to the amusement of Pottsy.
Talking of Pottsy, he had a great day out, scoring a
fantastic 40pts round here, which is no mean feat even off the yellows, to
win Div B by a country mile from three, all tied on 34, headed by Pete
Stonebridge followed in by Mr & Mrs Collier.
Fred Land took Div A with a fine 37, ahead of two guys
who have been waging a series of matches over the past couple of weeks, Owen
Walkley (35) and Jeff Warner (34).
There were two ‘2’s from Bob St. Aubin on the 6th
and Ivan Plunkett on the 17th.
Div A (0-16)
1st Fred Land (16/Hi14.9) 37pts
2nd Owen Walkley (11/Hi10.3) 35pts
3rd Jeff Warner (13/Hi12.7) 34pts
Div B (17+)
1st Campbell Potts (18/Hi17.3)
40pts
2nd Pete Stonebridge (17/Hi15.6)
34pts
3rd Liz Collier (25/Hi21.1) 34pts
Wednesday, Feb. 22,
Greenwood – Stableford
Twelve Outbackers travelled to Greenwood for the day as
the overflow from Treasure Hill as they didn’t have enough timeslots and
were short of caddies.
We played the C and A courses off the white tees which at
6,500yrds is one of the longer courses that we play. The course itself was
in good condition with well manicured tees and fairways. The greens looked a
little patchy but were fast and true, a great putting surface.
The day belonged to Steve Plant, who has been threatening
to have a good score but just never seems to quite finish the round off, but
today he had 43 points (gross 81) off his 16 handicap, a great score on a
tough golf course. Second was Stephen Mann with 38 points from Andy Todd
with 37 and coming in fourth place was Irishman, Shay Mitchell.
There were three ‘2’s, all on the same hole (A6) from
Steve Plant, Steve Mann & Mark Rendell.
1st Steve Plant (16/Hi13.5) 43pts

Friday, Feb. 24, Green
Valley – Stableford
Fifty-one Outbackers travelled to Green Valley on a hot
and very humid day for our normal 10am tee-off. It was good to see plenty of
caddies there to greet us and as the starter had had some cancellations we
were able to tee-off 25 minutes early with most groups completing the course
in just over 4 hours.
The course was well presented with good grassy fairways,
well tended tees & bunkers and greens that were true but very slow.
Just a little warning to all those who might see Dennis
Pelly and get a ride with him to the golf course; check after the game to
see if he remembers that he gave you a ride otherwise you could be left
behind just like he did to his great mate, Sugar Ray.
We had four divisions with four places in each division
plus the ‘2’s. There were some excellent scores in all four divisions with
the standout being Paul Bourke, who has a great couple of months continuing
to play good consistent golf.
Winner of Div D was Dave Collier (27) with a fine score
of 40 points, from Bill Trainer (28) on 36 and Andy Makara in third on 35,
and these three were some way ahead of the fourth placed man, Darragh
McCormack, who beat Barry Lewis on count back, both on 28.
Bob Cannon (21) just about doubled his points haul at
Khao Kheow on Monday, where he scored a miserable 21pts with an amazing
bounce back and 41pts to win Div C on count back from Pat Culloty (21), both
sharing the best score of the day, and both of them (Bob and Pat) will be
playing off two strokes less on their next outing. Third was Ed Horrocks
with 32 points, after his best round ever here last week.
A three way count back for first, second and third
decided the Div B result, with Rick Forrest taking the honours from Barry
Ennis and Tony McDonough, all with 37 points, whilst, as mentioned briefly
before, Paul Bourke repeated his win here from last week, when he scored
39pts off 8 with another win this week, this time 38pts off 7. Dennis Pelly
took second from Steve Mann, both on 35, with Peter LeNoury in fourth.
Finally, welcome to a couple of newbies to the Outback,
Jim Williams, Lynne Parry and Gareth Hearn.
There were three ‘2’s from Gareth Hearn (hole 12) and
Steve Reece & Jim Brackett on hole 16.
Div A (0-11)
1st Paul Bourke (7/Hi8.1) 38pts
2nd Dennis Pelly (10/Hi11.2) 35pts
3rd Steve Mann (9/Hi10.3) 35pts
Div B (12-16)
1st Rick Forrest (15/Hi15.2) 37pts
2nd Barry Ennis (16/Hi15.9) 37pts
3rd Tony McDonough (13/Hi13.9)
37pts
Div C (17-24)
1st Bob Cannon (21/Hi21.1) 41pts
2nd Pat Culloty (21/Hi21.1) 41pts
3rd Ed Horrocks (18/Hi17.8) 32pts
Div D (25+)
1st Dave Collier (27/Hi26) 40pts
2nd Bill Trainer (28/Hi27.2) 36pts

You don’t know how difficult it is to sing the
praises of Brian Wilkinson, but ya gotta hand it to the guy for this
terrific performance on this day at RGV. It was one of those days when
everything went right and he could do no wrong, obviously. As he guided
me through his round shot by shot , he regaled of tales of those four 30
foot putts that dropped and that drive on the 14th
that bounced off the mountain on the right and onto the middle of the
fairway. Well, you have to have a bit of luck to shoot a 45! The
resident Blackpool supporter won it fair and square though, well played
mate.
![](pic/s13-Golf.jpg)
Brian Wilkinson
Jimmy Dundon had another great round and has worked
off all the cobwebs from months of golf hibernation to shoot a superb
37. Watch out for Dundon in the coming weeks. Longtime pal Peter LeNoury
came in with 36 points on the card to round out the A Flight podium.
Warren Holland led the way for the B Flight players
with a steady 34 that had Henry O’Brien on his heels with 33 followed by
Micky Beresford with a respectable 32 points for the 21 handicapper.
The other interesting thing is that we had 6 sets of
rental clubs go out on the day which can only mean the airlines are
charging too much for baggage these days. We have seen more guys come
out to play that are leaving their clubs back home, and we do have a
fine assortment of quality golf club rental sets. Remember, we have golf
lockers to store your clubs on an annual or monthly basis.

We were lucky enough to be assigned the West/North
loops for today’s comp and they proved to be a great day of golf for us.
For a mere 920 baht for green fee and caddy fee, this course is one of
the best high-season deals in town. The “Lighthouse hole” par 3 is one
of the prettiest shots in Thailand and the undulations and elevations
make for many picturesque golf holes at this course. Condition of the
course was very good and playable and to be recommended to visitor or
resident.
We had 3 vans full of our golfers head out to the
Navy course and squeezed in 40 golfers in our 9 tee times thanks to some
quick starts off the first. We haven’t played here in ages but will be
back soon as we all enjoyed the day out.
In the A Flight, Ken Aihara continued his strong play
with another consistent round. Today, just shooting his handicap was
good enough to take top position, followed by Jimmy Dundon (again!) and
Englishman Mark Bonner, probably the fittest golfer in town. Well played
lads.
The B Flight was led by Jim Bell on 33 points with
Brendon Bird beating that suntanned Hawaiian Jerry Garcia on count back
with 33 points on the day.

It was the day for the higher handicappers to claim
the entire podium! Shooting a very high 42 points, Paul Hack (even he
admits it to be an unfortunate name for a golfer!) was no hacker on the
day for his well won victory. Brett and the two Jasons chased behind but
were not even close with scores that would have won on another day out.
Our mate from Champagne-a-Go Go, Jason McDonald is
one of the longest hitters in town, and if he could get some touch
around the greens he would be a great golfer. It will come mate, it will
come! Champagne Jay just needs to spend a little time with Richard for a
cure.

Van Dyk tops the bill at Greenwood
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
![](pic/s14-Bert.jpg)
Winners and runners-up with
one of Bert’s finest.
Derek Brook
Tuesday, Feb. 21,
Greenwood – Stableford
Greenwood is a course we book every month; mainly because
we can now get there pretty quick on the new roads, the course is always in
good condition, the ‘rates’ are usually good, and most of all, all the
players enjoy their visit there.
On this day the group at Bert’s was a little smaller than
usual, due to various reasons, it may be that the High Season is coming to
an early end, but we did have a full list for Friday. So into cars and off
we went. The drive up there was as usual swift, up past Laem Chabang, turn
left at the main road and keep going. Easy really!
We were soon there and booked in, then it was to the
first Tee and we were to play the C & A Nines, quite a difficult day ahead.
The course was in its normal fine condition and as usual with the C Nine the
lead-off, good scores were difficult to come by. These nine holes always
seem to be the toughest, but playing from the yellow tees gave everyone a
chance.
As always the players got around here in reasonable time
and then it was into the showers, and a bite to eat before we were able to
get into cars for the slow amble back to Bert’s. At this time of the day the
roads were quite packed, still the Route 7 into Pattaya is such an asset to
travel we still made good time.
Back at Bert’s most of the players were tucking into
Bert’s Golfers special, before the presentation. In the A Flight, 0 to 16,
the winner was Rob Brown, playing well lately, with 37 points ahead of Mike
Gaussa in second with 36 points and in third was Richard Kubicki with 35
points.
In the B Flight the winner was Andre Van Dyk with 38
points ahead of Bernie Cairns with 37 points and in third was Dick Warberg,
back from sickness, with 31 points. T.T.F.N.
Near Pins: Mike Gaussa, Carole Kubicki, Andre Van
Dyk, Alan Jones.

Arthur Bailey 1929 – 2012 RIP
Nigel Cannon
The Pattaya golfing community has lost one its
character’s when on 17th February Arthur Bailey passed away in Blandford
England aged 82. He was a past Captain of the local Ashley Wood Golf Club
where is still remembered.
![](pic/s15-Arthur.jpg)
Arthur Bailey
Following the passing of his beloved wife, Arthur sold
his business and came to live and play golf in Pattaya for the next 20
years. He played from a number of venues latterly with The Kronborg, The
Outback and the Diana Seniors with considerable success. At the age of 79 at
Pattaya Country Club he had his 10th! Hole in one! I was there and as you
would expect it was ‘drinks all round’.
In the last few years he played with a number of groups
at Pattaya Country Club where he was a member, and was popular with players,
caddies and clubhouse staff.
Owing to ill health he decided to return to England at
the end of last year to seek treatment for his back which had been troubling
him for a number of years.
A quote from Jimmy Little: “Arthur was a gentleman of the
first order”.
And so say all of us!

Russell and Stephen grab the Monthly Medals
IPGC golf from The Haven
Monday, Feb. 20, The
Emerald - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Allan Hanlon (12) 37pts
2nd Leif Lossius (30) 36pts
3rd Al Keith (5) 34pts
4th Al Rolnik (18) 34pts
5th Jamie King (16) 34pts
As usual the local course rule of “lift and place in the
fairways” was in place to offset the sometimes poor lies amongst the crab
grass, but with the course in otherwise good condition and the greens
consistent but on the slow side, the scores were reasonable as the weather
stayed fair but very hot.
![](pic/s17-Haven%201.jpg)
Russell Exley.
Allan Hanlon just got the better of the in-form Leif
Lossius by a single shot to take his first win of this trip with one of his
better rounds that was consistent rather than spectacular.
Al Keith, who is also showing signs of some return to
form although the flat stick is not quite as warm as it used to be, showed
good application after a slow start to take third after he won a three-way
count back with Al Rolnik, in fourth, and new member Jamie King in fifth.
After Jamie dropped to fifth with just 18 over the closing nine, Al Keith
won out with a better 12 on the last six after he had tied with Al Rolnik on
19 each for the inward half.
There were no 2’s in the second division but Grant Cadell
shared the first division with Allan Hanlon.
Before presenting the prizes The Doc welcomed new members
Jamie King, together with Eero and Ari Malinen. There was also a welcome
back for an old favorite “The ATM”, in the form of Trevor Edge, who was down
from the north to distribute his largesse amongst the needy and not so needy
of the local golfing community during his visits to a few of the courses.
Wednesday, Feb. 22,
Century Chonburi - Stableford
CSS 72
Division 1 (0–15)
1st Bob Heath (13) 37pts
2nd Al Keith (5) 36pts
3rd Grant Cadell (15) 35pts
Division 2 (16+)
1st Don Everett (21) 37pts
2nd Leif Lossius (30) 36pts
3rd Jim Lanzo (17) 32pts
A surprisingly large turnout for the trip to the almost
unbelievably priced Century Chonburi, where a round of golf including the
caddy and sharing a golf cart costs just 600 baht, required the formation of
two divisions with the cut coming as usual at 15 and below for the first
division.
![](pic/s17-Haven%202.jpg)
Stephen Beard.
With such a low price it is to be expected that the
course would be not quite up to the standard of some others in the area but
none of the players complained on the day as the course was in generally
good condition, except for a few of the bunkers where the course local rule
of ‘lift and place’ was required due to the lack of sand.
The second division was won by Don Everett who has
enjoyed a good run of form recently which continued on the day as he
consigned Leif Lossius to his second successive second place, after
returning a level handicap card, by a single point with Jim Lanzo taking
third after a marathon count back which he finally won on the last hole with
3 points to John Murphy’s 2 points after they had tied the nine at 17, the
six at 7, the last three at 7 and the final two on 5.
The first division was a straightforward win for Captain
Bob as he basked in the memories of old glory days with a one point victory
over Al Keith in second and Grant Cadell taking third another shot behind
Al. Bob’s round was a tremendous feat following a hectic night of
pre-tournament preparations at the Wonderful Bars 1, 2 and 3 along with
practicing the downing the winning round of drinks long into the night until
he had almost perfected it.
![](pic/s17-Haven%203.jpg)
Bob Heath.
Prior to the presentations there was a welcome for new
member Jim Lanzo and welcome backs for Peter Skinner, Bob Heath, Jim
Slattery, George Oakley, and Bruce Horn all hailing from the famous South
Herts Club in North London, together with Rick Roberts and Toshihiro Aoki.
There was also a special welcome back to playing for the regular long drive
winner, Trevor Schirmer, after a series of injuries.

1st Stephen Beard (22) net 75
2nd Bill Hurd (20) net 76
3rd Steve Clarke (20) net 77
4th Alwyne Burley (17) net 77
Another large field assembled to take on the Mountain and
Lake Courses at Phoenix with the first division playing from the blue tees
and the second division now playing regularly from the white tees, which
seems to have encouraged a few more of the higher handicappers turning out
to contend.
A very hot and humid day greeted the players and even
though a breeze could be felt all around the course, the conditions for
playing were quite difficult, although the general condition of the course
was excellent with the greens being particularly fast but with many of the
pin positions on a slope two putts a good result.
In the first division Russell Exley won his first medal
of the 2012 series, leading up to the gold and silver medals at the end of
the year, with an excellent round of one under the standard scratch for the
blue tees. This came even after losing a ball on the eighteenth hole up a
palm tree where several others had lost balls before and even with the
assistance of a distance measure meter he could not identify the ball and
was forced to play his provisional, thus incurring a two shot addition to
finish with a double bogey, but he was still good enough by a shot to win.
Jason Cole returned to take second place with a better
count back of 35.5 leaving Phil Groves in third with a net score of 37.5 on
the Lakes nine and Yasuo Suzuki in fourth one stroke further back.
The second division was a return to the top of a singles
competition for Stephen Beard for the first time since winning a medal
exactly three years previously in February 2009, although he tried
heroically to fall again at the last hurdle taking a nine on the par four 17th
which included a four putt and a double on the last which included an air
shot. Amazingly he hung on to win by a single stroke from Bill Hurd who
almost won his first medal out of The Haven with a solid round but where the
greens just got the better of him. Steve Clarke won a count back with Alwyne
Burly to take third place with a better 36 to 38.5 over the inward nine.
Yasuo Suzuki spent a couple of worry filled hours only to
discover that for once he had the only 2 in the first division and would
collect the full pot alone. Meanwhile Bruce Horn chipped in, from fully 40
yards, on Lakes number 7 to sweep the large pool in the second division and
then repeated the feat on the 8th from a similar
distance again for a birdie, neither of which helped at all in getting
anywhere near the leaders scores.
Back at The Haven there were welcomes for Ronald Hoban
and Steve Clarke from the Wakehurst club in North Sydney area and welcome
backs for Danny Greer, Gerald Decio, Martin Grimoldby, Jason Cole and Robin
Peach.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven group, you
can contact mobile 082 219 0965 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185 Soi
13, between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All
transportation to the course is arranged and you do not need to sign up
prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.30 on Monday, Wednesday, and
Friday on the days you wish to play. A schedule of courses to be played can
be found on our web site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

A long day at the office
PSC golf from the Three Sisters Bar
![](pic/s18-Three.jpg)
Winner Vance Millar (left) with runner-up
Richard Hall.
The weather gods were kind this 22nd of Feb at the
Pattaya Country Club: just a bit of fog that cleared up fairly quickly.
Quickly however is not a term I would use for the
“five-some” that went out ahead of our four groups. A five-some would not
have been so bad but four of them were duffers and held up everyone all
around the course. They had signed up in a block ahead of ours so there was
nothing to be said. Every single green had bad scruff marks around the hole.
That, my friends, shows ignorant golfers who should not have been allowed on
the course. A complaint will be filed with the PCC regarding that group.
A total of 18 players showed up and cards were tallied at
Caddy Shack II. Coming in first place was Vance Millar with a 37 points.
Richard Hall also had a 37 but lost on the count back, followed by Kunaha
Janathorn with 34, and three 33s, Pottida Murphy, Pat Clark and Michael
Fischer.
Herbie provided the usual snacks of peanuts, pretzels and
chips. The entree today was hot dogs.

Monday, Feb. 20,
Plutaluang – Stableford
About 32 players made their way to the Navy course to try
their luck on the East and South courses respectively. The course was in
pretty good condition and the first group completed their round in 4hrs 30
minutes. Given some long distances from greens to tees, this was quite a
good time on a hot day.
This was the last showing for Peter Sindberg and the
Gaardes’ for a while, as they all head back to their respective homelands
soon. We wish them a safe return.
Regular scribe Peter Blackburn is still in Perth and we
are pleased to report his doctors over there have said he does not need
another stint in his heart at this time and with his continued medication he
should be able to keep belting the ball till kingdom come! Also stand in
scribe “The Drut” is away with the missus in the village and both he and
Peter will be back soon, so until then you are stuck with SMS.
Typically, this course proved difficult for most with
only one golfer managing to better their handicap on the day, as a
consequence of many water hazards and more than the usual number of OB lines
i.e. many internal course holes defined as OB. This scribe found both on
many occasions and was concerning enough for my caddie to ask after ten
holes, “You have secret hole with balls?”
![](pic/s19-Kronborg%202.jpg)
(L-R) Bjarne Kjar, Dave, and
Brad Todd.
If my game was bad at that point it just got worse as my
mind went south in a hurry! Then I realized she was telling me that the
dozen balls I started with was rapidly depleting! As it turned out, “back
nine Stu” rallied and managed to finish with a couple spare.
The A flight winner was a happy Bjarne Kjar with a solid
38 points off his (21) handicap. Second on a count back was Don Richardson
35 (13), and in third was Niels Hansen 35 (15) who if he could have putted
would have set a course record! Jesper Rasmussen also with 35 (20) took
fourth and fifth spot went to Peter Sinberg 34 (13).
B flight was taken out by an ecstatic young Brad Todd
(son of Martin) who is playing six days a week and the improvement is
showing with his 36 points off (25) handicap. The ladies again made a podium
finish with Susan Gaarde 35 (25) upstaging her husband Svende Gaarde 34
(28), who beat Jan Lovgreen on a count back 34 (22), and Kenny Chung
slipping from first place last week to fifth place with 33 (24).

Thursday, Feb. 23,
Pleasant Valley – Stableford
Thirty-three players assembled on a glorious morning with
clear skies and warm weather to take on this popular golf course, which is
showing continual course improvements every time we visit. The club house
staff are very welcoming and courteous and the facilities are spacious and
clean. On the down side, the prices of beer and course foods seem
extraordinarily high?
We welcomed Hitosai Takeda from Japan and said farewell
to Eric Black who heads back to Australia but has “vowed to return”. Haven’t
we heard that somewhere before?
Many of us have been fortunate to have had at least one
“hole in one” during our golfing lives and as I was putting for a crucial
birdie putt on the 16th green, screaming and shouting
went off on the adjacent 17th tee. “What the @*#
hell?” I said, as my putt slid by the hole… Bjarne Kjar, one of our group
said “Doug Maiko (actually he said ‘that Yank guy’) just hit a hole in one,
I saw it go in from here!”
Doug later asked me in the club house if it was better to
buy everyone a drink at the club or back at the Caf้ Kronborg, and I
explained that there would probably be fewer people at the Kronborg than at
the club house presentations. To his credit, trays of soft drink and beers
were paraded about during presentations, courtesy of Doug. So thanks Doug
from everyone for the drink and congratulations on your first hole in one!
(I forgive you for my missed birdie putt.)
Doug’s hole in one should not altogether distract
highlighting some very good scores on the day, with many golfers shooting 40
plus points and many more having played better than their handicaps, as the
score results will show. (It would be interesting to see what scores would
be returned if we played off longer tees on this course.)
Kjeld Ravin topped the field and won A Flight with a
sterling 44 points whilst Bill Plath scooped second with 41 edging out Stu
Rifkin (thanks Doug!) 40, Rob Brown a solid 39 and Tore Eliassen 38 edging
out Leif Kirkgarde and Niels Hansen on a count back for fifth.
Elias Magnusson won B Flight on a count back from the
inform Kenny Chung, both with a good score of 41 points. Graham Buckingham
was narrowly behind with 40 points, beating another in form golfer Brad Todd
on a count back, whilst my playing partner today Bjarne Kjar took out the
fifth place with 39 points.

1st Kjeld Ravin (20) 44pts
2nd Bill Plath (18) 41pts

The worst score of the day has the privilege of giving a
small donation to charity (normally 50 baht or more if desired) and today’s
unlucky Compass Award went to Eddie Glinsek. Thanks for your generous
donation Eddie. Some fortunate person/people will benefit from your and the
many other donors who have given over the past 12 months.
With his master still away, Deefa was paraded around for
scraps (donations) by his carer Ken Berneck, and managed to fill his tummy
with sufficient fodder. Thanks again to all the golfers who give so
generously and so regularly.

Masterful Morel takes the plaudits at Pattaya Country Club
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
![](pic/s20-Jomtien.jpg)
Jim Connelly, Mark Potten and
Harry Vincenzi were the second division top three at Greenwood on Monday.
Monday, Feb. 20, Greenwood
– Stableford
We took the 45 minute journey here from Siam Cats to
arrive to a totally deserted course. It was a very hot day with hardly any
breeze and the first group teed off 30 minutes ahead of schedule on the
selected A and B courses.
There were three divisions for the men today with the cut
at 5-15, 16-20 and 21+ and of course a ladies flight. The greens today were
very fast and this proved a good test of golf for all and was reflected in
the scores.
Alan Griffiths won division 1 with 34 points, Chris
Voller was second one point behind and Alan Pilkington beat Phil Mitchell
and Raivo Velsberg on a 19/18/14 back nine count back for third after they
all came in with 32 points.
Jim Connelly also scored 34 to win division 2 with Mark
Potton in second after beating Harry Vincenzi on a 16/15 count back, both on
33 points.
Paul Chabot topped division 3 with 33, two points behind
was Rodney Howett in second place and the Falkland Isles boy Peter Grant
beat John Harvey on a 14/12 count back to take third after they both came in
with 27 points, yes 27 points!
Mauri Friman’s lady, Chanidapa, won the ladies division,
no scores mentioned.
Near pins went to Fred Land, Dennis Scougall, Raivo
Velsberg, Rod Howett and Mark Potton.
Jerry MaCarthy and Andy O’Neil split the first division
‘2’s pot while Mark Potton cleaned up in division 2 gets.

Pattaya C.C. – Stableford
We have one more game here next month on the 12th before
they close the front nine down for seven months for a complete renovation
with new greens, bunkers and a different style of grass. We have not been
quoted any prices yet for playing the back nine twice, so who knows?
Playing off 20 and with 6 gross pars on the front nine,
the happy frog Jean Morel came in with an incredible 42 points to win
division 2 today. Lee Casey took second place with 38 and Fred Duffy was
third on 36. The tees today were in the normal positions so there was no
advantage.
Chris Voller won division 1 with 38 points while Jim
Connelly beat Barry Stirling on an 18/17 back nine count back for second
after they both scored 35.
Near pins were claimed by Gerry Doyle, Barry Stirling
(2), Chris Voller, Jim Connelly, Fred Duffy (2) and Mark Potton.
In the ‘2’s Barry Stirling hit his tee shot on the tough
7th to within 18 inches and sank the putt and Chris Voller birdied the 12th
for them both to share division 1 pot while Lee Casey, Magne Gunnarson, Veli
Laaksonnen and Mark Potton spit the booty in division 2.
Friday, Feb. 22, Eastern
Star - Stableford
Five ladies pulled out of today’s game so no separate
flight for them today. It was another very hot day here with no breeze
coming off the coast. The greens had improved slightly from the previous
outing here and we were told to expect better conditions over the next few
weeks.
Back from his 5 week holiday, Arthur Hancock playing off
14 shot 37 points to win division 1 ahead of Marty Rock in second on 33 and
Neville Scurrell third on 32.
In division 2 Frank Kelly also scored 37 to top the
flight, with Andy Galvin in second place on 33 and Harry Vincenzi took third
with 32 after beating Erkki Pohja on a 20/15 back nine count back.
Thirty four points was the winning score in division 3
with Magne Gunnarson on top from Brian Kelly in second with 30, beating Andy
Pedlar on an 18/16 count back.
Near pins went to Jerry MaCarthy, Dennis Scougal, Neville
Scurrell (2), Andy Baber, Erkki Pohja and Harry Riley.
With two rollovers in division 1 in the ‘2’s today,
Mikael Andersson birdied the 3rd and the 17th to keep him a happy chappy
while Harry Riley also got a ‘2’ on the 3rd for the only one in division 2.
It was Bon Voyage to Jill and Howard Stanley this week.
We hope the collar bone repairs itself soon and you are back in the frame.

Graham comes out
of the shadows
PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside

Bob & Graham.
Tuesday, February 14, The
Emerald - Stableford
It was Valentine’s Day, but nobody fell in love with
their game at the Emerald on this day. No player managed to break their
handicap, with Pierre Cene (12) going closest with 35 points to win the day.
2nd & 3rd were separated on a count back 20/19 with Gabriel Enright (15)
edging Graham Johnson (8) after both players signed for 34 points.
Graham was to the fore in the NTP department with 2,
while Pierre & Monte each grabbed 1.
Thursday, February 16, Mt.
Shadow - Stableford
Mountain Shadow was our chosen venue for Thursday, the
course was in good condition, with the greens temperate at best, compared to
the hot & fast they can be. Graham Johnson (8) made amends for the lack of
handicap breaking Tuesday, with a strong 38 points today, he told me he had
no birdies in that, so some very steady golf, to win the day from Clive
Hoseason (29) with 34 points.
No NTPs today, as we only had light numbers.
Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf on Tuesday &
Thursday, with ML hosting prompt presentations on both days. Call 089 094
1841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers & good
golfing!

Barrett’s the boy
Phoenix Tuesday/Friday Golf Group
![](pic/s22-Phoenix.jpg)
Tuesday’s top three with
winner Bill Hewitt (center) pose for a photo with a staff member from The
Relax Bar.
Mike Gerrard
Friday, Feb. 17, Phoenix -
Stableford
Yes folks, after a couple of dodgy weeks with stomach
bugs etc, our Arthur Barrett scored a fine 36 points to win the Friday game.
Second was Bill Hewitt, beating Clive Robinson on count back who in turn
pushed Landis Brooks into fourth, all on 33 points.
Near pins went to Louis McConkey, Landis Brooks, Ted
Oreton and Peter Wathall.
The lucky draw prizes donated by our hosts The Relax Bar
went to Bob Walsh, Joris Goetshalkx, and Ken Hatton.
I cannot comment on the course conditions due to myself
being ill. I know I went to the registration before the game and to the
presentation after the game, but I don’t remember anything else that
happened on the day. However it seemed that everyone enjoyed themselves.
Tuesday, Feb. 21, Phoenix
- Stableford
Slightly recovered from the laryngitis and bronchitis,
yours truly played for the first time for two weeks. What a lovely day it
was at the course. At last the hordes of tourist golfers seem to have
dwindled and we managed to get away on time. That is to say the players who
arrived on time!
Being involved in a four-ball with Bill Hewitt today was
a pleasure by the way that he played. Bill notched up 40 points today for
the win. I myself, and one or two others, managed to score 37 points but
sadly we were not in the frame. Had Bill not scored a double bogey at the
last he would have ended up with super score, however, it didn’t stop him
having his handicap cut for the rest of the week.
As well as the normal winner’s prize, Bill was awarded
the Nemo Music Lounge voucher kindly donated by Federico.
In second place was Joe Miller with 39 points and in
third place was Hugh Byrne with 38. Yes folks the saga continues with Hugh.
Everyone thought that after his months of illness and operations he would
struggle for a while. Well he has played twice with us since his return and
scored 35 and 38 points. And he still walks the course! As they say, beware
the wounded tiger (or shark might be more apt). Well done Hugh!
Near pins went to Peter Wathall, Joe Miller & Peter
Rawling.
Lucky draws donated by The Relax Bar went to yours truly,
Harvey Trewarn & Joris Goetshalkx.
The presentation was somewhat disrupted today due to a
group of nine players joining our group and failing to return to the
presentation. We had waited long enough for them and most folks were
starting to wander off.
Also we found out to our pleasure that it was Sergio
Volpi’s birthday and he insisted on paying for the first drink for everyone
at the presentation. We all sang happy birthday to him. This meant that we
had quite a bit of money left over (in excess of 1,000 baht) so it was
agreed that we would donate it to the Phoenix staff and caddies party the
following day.
I had a very strange phone call in the week from a
gentleman who was quite upset that we do not print the handicaps of the
winning players in our group. The answer is quite simple. All players must
have an official handicap to play in our group and no more than 28 is
allowed. I soon discovered that this gentleman was either on something that
we all might enjoy someday or he was from another planet, because he then
went on to complain that I never state what course we play at! We are called
the Phoenix group after all.

‘City of Angels’ tourney to take
place at Bangkok’s new ice arena
![](pic/s23-Hockey%20%20.jpg)
Support Thailand’s Flying
Farangs at the ‘City of Angels’ ice hockey tournament taking place from
March 29-31 at Grand Central Rama IX.
Scott Murray
Thailand’s sizzling “City Of Angels” ice hockey
tournament is ready to roll for the 5th straight year with organizer JOG
Sports promising an even more action-packed event at the new
state-of-the-art ice arena, “The Rink”, located at Grand Central Rama IX.
While ice hockey and the balmy Thai climate may seem an
unlikely combination, hockey has blossomed in this steamy Southeast Asian
nation. Thailand has been hosting international ice hockey tournaments every
October for the last seventeen years. The annual fall tournament called “The
Land of Smiles Ice Hockey Classic”, also organized by JOG Sports, has been
such a great success that the “City of Angels Old Timer’s Classic” was
formed for players over 35 years of age. This tournament known has grown
from 5 teams in 2008 to fifteen this year.
The 5th annual version of the “City of Angels Old Timer’s
Ice Hockey Classic” skates from March 29th-31st and will feature teams from
Russia, Finland, United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Indonesia, Japan,
Malaysia, China, Hong Kong and Thailand.
Last year’s final saw the Dubai Mighty Camels defeat
Bangkok’s Flying Farangs in a fierce battle. The defending champions are
prepared to defend their title but they will face a tough task repeating as
the Hong Kong Tigers, Moscow Ruby Stars, Singapore Manimals and Bangkok’s
Flying Farangs are all eager to knock off them off the podium.
The three-day ice hockey extravaganza will feature 250
players from around the world and “The Rink” at Grand Central Rama IX is a
first-class arena and the best ice rink Thailand has ever seen.
“The popularity of this tourney is unmatched, not just in
Asia but around the globe,” says JOG Sports Managing Director Scott
Whitcomb. “Despite hard economic times, we still have teams knocking on the
door.”
Thailand’s host team – the Bangkok Flying Farangs – has
spearheaded the tourney once known as the OK Cup since 1995.
The tournament’s main sponsor is the Grand Mercure
Fortune Bangkok.

Thai Premier League set to
reduce foreign quota allowance
Staff reporters
With the kick-off for the 2012 Thai Premier League
football season just a few weeks away, the TPL has announced a significant
change in policy regarding the quota allowance for foreign players at each
club.
![](pic/s25-Thai%20football.jpg)
Pattaya United’s Cameroon
import Paul Ekollo (32) is seen in action in a Thai Premier League fixture
against Army United last season.
Starting with the upcoming campaign, only five foreign
players will be allowed to register with each club in the league. This is a
reduction from the seven players allowed last season. This development has
emerged in order for the league to comply with Asian Football Confederation
(AFC) rules according to TPL chairman Dr Vichit Yamboomruang.
Of the five player quota, only three non-Asian and one
other (non Thai) Asian will be allowed on the pitch at the same time.
The new rule change is likely to have serious
implications for a number of clubs in the Thai Premier League who have
adopted a policy of recruiting players from abroad en masse over the last
few seasons. Even with the seven foreign player allowance of last season,
some clubs were forced to loan players out to lower league outfits.
The Thai Premier League says the rule changes will
prevent the influx of foreign players having a negative impact on the Thai
national team and will also force clubs to invest more heavily in their
local youth team set-ups.
The new Thai Premier Premier League season is due to
start on Saturday, March 17. Pattaya United will kick off their campaign on
that day with a home match against Samut Songkram FC at the Nongprue
Stadium, while Chonburi FC will play host to Thai Port FC.
Newly promoted teams to appear in the top flight this
coming season are BB-CU FC, Chainat and Buriram FC, the latter one with a
new name change to Wuachaon United, the Fighting Bulls. Buriram FC sold
their license at the end of last season to the president of Songkhla FC as
he tried to shortcut the league, but the TPL put a stop to it and with
Wuanchaon United and Songkhla he will have to lead two clubs. Wuanchaon will
play at least their opening fixtures in Buriram but an eventual move to
southern Thailand seems inevitable.
Other changes this season will likely see Sisaket FC
become Isaan United and a move for the club to Ubon Ratchathani looks to be
on the cards after the town’s new third division club, Sisaket United,
denied them use of the provincial stadium. It seems local politics and
football walk hand-in-hand here once again.
The Pattaya Mail will be following the fortunes of
all our local teams once the new season gets underway.

Batsmen power Pattaya Cricket
Club to T20 league victory
Pattaya Cricket Club hosted Asia United at Horseshoe
Point in their latest T20 league fixture last Sunday. A sizeable crowd had
arrived for the 10 a.m. start as AUCC won the toss and elected to bat first
in steamy, humid conditions.
![](pic/s26-Pattaya.jpg)
From the sizeable crowd PCC plucked 56 year old Loz from
his reserved seat as a 12th man and he was immediately asked to field at
fine leg as cover for a late PCC arrival. He was soon into the action diving
on the boundary to stop four runs and smashing his expensive sunglasses in
the process. It was pointed out to him that trying to dive like a 20 year
old was ill advised and the club treasurer gave him 100 baht to replace his
beloved sunnies and told him to keep the change as a gesture of goodwill.
Despite Loz’s efforts in the field, the AUCC openers
Aasam (40) and Vishnu (49) raced to 82 from the first 10 overs as they
exploited the favourable batting conditions and field restrictions. The
introduction of Usman (2/17) and Mithu (4/15) in the second half of the
innings proved game changing as they strangled the batsmen with an excellent
display of line and length bowling to finally restrict AUCC to a competitive
150 for 6.
In reply the PCC openers Sunny and Yasir were immediately
faced with a cunning plan to nullify their liking for pace. Walter’s plan A
was to open the bowling with his subtly turning leg breaks. Fortunately for
the PCC batsmen the subtly turning leg breaks were all pitched full of a
length just outside off stump and at a pace that appeared very inviting as
the first over was dutifully dispatched for a princely 22 runs.
Plan B, bring on the pace. Walter was very accurate in
his belief that the PCC batsmen would enjoy the ball coming onto the bat as
the next over went for 12 runs and after 5 overs the score was 67 for 0.
Despite several bowling changes the run rate was maintained and at half way
PCC were 107 for 2.
Yasir had departed for a brutal 17 ball 41 and John G’s
(6) little legs were not quick enough to beat an accurate throw from the
boundary as he tried to complete an easy second. It was left to the captain
Simon (15 no) and Sunny (76no) whose innings was masterful from the first
ball to see the home side over the victory line with nearly 3 overs to
spare.
The win leaves PCC in a strong position to qualify for
the play-offs as one of the top two sides in their league and when they have
such a strong support base that are willing to throw themselves around like
teenager, who would bet against them?
For all the details on forthcoming matches and events

‘World Gems’ take volleyball title at Pattaya Sport Center Games
![](pic/s27-Youth%201.jpg)
World Gems Collection take on
Orange VC in the volleyball final.
Warunya Thongrod
The final day of the 3rd Pattaya Youth Sports Center
Games took place on Feb. 24 with a volleyball match between World Gems
Collection and Orange VC providing an exciting conclusion to the event.
In a close first set both teams struggled for supremacy
but World Gems demonstrated some outstanding blocking moves at the vital
moments to take it 25-17.
Orange VC came out with different tactics in the second
set, using the drop shot far more frequently and also aiming to hit the back
lines, but World Gems were equal to everything their opponents could throw
at them and were deserved winners of the match and title, taking the second
set by a score of 25-18 and with it the champion’s trophy and 6,000 baht
first prize.

Exciting action from the
takraw final between Pa Wang and Chok Uthaen team 1.
Pattaya Youth Sports Center Games are organized each year
to allow the young people who attend the center to show off their skills in
a competitive environment. The center has several highly promising athletes
using the facilities there, including young female sepak takraw players
Nathiya Janthawaet and Nittipong Namnaipmuang.
In the takraw final at the Games, past champions Pa Wang
team took on the Chok Uthaen team 1. Pa Wang fell behind early on but a
change in their serving tactics brought dividends and they eventually ran
out winners of the first set 15-7. The second and decisive set followed a
similar pattern to the first and despite the Chok Uthaen players’ best
efforts they were unable to prevent their opponents taking the set 15-9 and
the title plus 4,000 baht prize money.
The Pattaya Youth Sports Center has facilities for
futsal, volleyball, petanque, fitness and swimming and is open to everyone.
The center is located on Thepprasit Road Soi 7 in south Pattaya.

Golfers usurp Bowlers at their own game
Lawn bowls from The Bowling Green
![](pic/s28-Lawn%201.jpg)
The Bunker Boys (and girls)
Golf Society team.
Saturday 25th Feb, there was a special match played
between The Bowling Green Lawn Bowls members and The Bunker Boys Golf
Society, who are based at the Bowling Green now that the Bunker Bar has been
sold. Half of the Bunker Boys had never played bowls before, but were given
tuition before the match by a few of the lads from the Bowling Green.
The Bunker boys were given a 7 shot start in each match
as a handicap and there was a total of 10 matches played, each match being
played over 10 ends.
The Captain of the Bunker Boys was William Macey (a
prominent P.S.C. Committee member), with ‘Brummie’ John captaining The
Bowling Green.
All the matches were played in a fantastic spirit with
both teams desperately wanting to win. It seems that The Bunker Boys picked
up the game really well as they won the competition 6-4 and they all
performed exceptionally well. Even without the handicap, they would still
have drawn 5-5. Thanks to all who took part and we look forward to the next
challenge.

Pattaya Sports Club Fishing News
![](pic/s29-PSC%20fishing%20%201.jpg)
Richard Allen’s friends enjoy
their Feb. 16 fishing trip.
Capt. Dene
The trip on Feb. 16 was arranged for PSC member Richard
Allen for his five overseas visiting friends (PSC members) and an
accompanying friend, Maha, a lovely lady from the Philippines. A fine group
of guys and a pleasant lass - all of whom would be welcome at any future
time.
![](pic/s29-PSC%20fishing%20%202.jpg)
John shows off two of his
better catches on the day.
I went along on the trip to ensure all went well – there
was no need however as these guys looked after themselves and enjoyed the
fishing interspersed with a few brown ales from time to time. I found out
later they were in the shipping, marine and cargo industry and they knew
more about fishing than me.
All enjoyed the trip with the exception of Maha who, on
her maiden voyage, found out she was not a good sailor, spending most of the
day lying on the bunk with a plastic bag ready at hand.
The guys all caught a good quantity of our usual pladang,
snapper & grouper. Three of them are pictured with one of the eight large
1–2 kilo blue spotted cod which were added to the catch.
Maha recovered well on the way home and we were welcomed
by Richard & his wife at the pier. He graciously invited me to join them for
refreshments and dinner at a nearby seafood restaurant in Bang Saray. It was
a lovely dinner and great company. Many thanks and a warm welcome any time
you wish to go again.
On Feb. 18, seven of us set out at our regular 07:00 time
on pristine waters and we started fishing at around 8:30 at our regular
location about 3km out. The fish were biting well and we all had decent
catches when the weather did a 180บ turn. Within minutes there were strong
winds and quite choppy seas followed quickly by heavy rain – quite a
tropical squall. The captain steered the vessel slowly through the waves for
the next 90 minutes while we all took shelter in the cabin, kitchen and
skipper’s quarters. The wind and the rains then abated followed by quieter
waters and we were soon all fishing happily again.
A special welcome to 2 newcomers today - Andre (Belgian)
and Eddy (Welsh) – good guys! Bag catches were average with the usual
grouper, snapper & yellow tail and pictured hereunder is John with just 2 of
the better fish in his bag.
