Jesters still caring for kids after 5 years

British Chamber puts on a Royal evening

Jesters still caring for kids after 5 years

Yes, it is that time again for the Jesters and our associates to knuckle down and start organizing the fifth annual Jesters ‘Care for Kids’ Charity Drive in earnest.

Following last year’s most successful drive ever, when we raised 2.76 million baht for the Fountain of Life Children’s Center, we realized that our work was to be cut out for us this year. For starters, some of our organizational personnel have moved on, such as the Poulsens, Alice and Niel, who were an integral part of the Charity Drive since its inception in 1998. The donation box at the Tesco Lotus store on Sukumvit, designated for the Fountain of Life Center for the last two years and responsible for augmenting the charity coffers by 200,000 baht each annum, has now been earmarked for new beneficiaries, as per head office policy. Furthermore, the fragile economic environment still remains a factor working against raising money, in a region where there are many charities seeking benefactors as well.

Tons of fun at last year’s Jesters Care 4 Kids Charity Children’s Day.

However, momentum works in our favor, along with the Jesters charitable reputation. Proof of which has been the attraction of four Platinum Sponsors already this year, including Shenanigan’s, Pattaya Mail, Chonburi Siam Steel Mill Services and Rieckermann Thai Engineering. We also have Graham Macdonald, chairman of the British Chamber of Commerce for the Eastern Seaboard back onboard the organizing committee this year.

In addition, we will employ a new concept this year with the assistance of PMCI to be referred to as ‘Pledge for Kids’. The latter is designed to attract potential donors who would rather not give a lump sum but, instead, a more modest sum on a monthly basis over a 12-month period. The launch date for the pledge is set for June.

The Jesters ‘Care for Kids’ organizing committee, specifically web expert Susie Ngamsuwan, has also produced a CD of our Web Site, including a history of the Charity Drive and photo galleries, which is being used for promotional purposes and attracting new sponsors. Our latest corporate letter soliciting sponsorship has also just been finalized and is ready for distribution both by email and snail mail. And, we have put up a new commercial site this year, www.care4kids.info thanks to the graces of GeckoTech, systems engineers, in Pattaya.

In addition to the Fountain of Life Children’s Center, the Jesters ‘Care for Kids’ Charity Drive this year has added two new beneficiaries, the Eastern Child Welfare Protection Institute (Huay Pong, Rayong) and the Pattaya Redemptorist School for the Blind (Naklua). The latter has just benefited from the first event of this year’s Charity Drive, Paul Baker’s Farewell Tour, which was a special sponsored pushbike ride from Ubon to Pattaya. The four cyclists, Paul, Richy, John and Ian, who rode the 700 kms in 6 days, have raised over 200,000 baht for this school benefiting blind and mentally impaired children.

Additionally, Declan, Pop’s All-Stars, and Rick and Harpic have recorded a 3-set CD titled “Play Something You Know”, which is currently available at Shenanigan’s and Tahitian Queen for 350 baht. All profits will go directly to the Jesters Care for Kids Charity Drive 2002.

This year’s experienced organizing committee with assigned duties, who can be contacted through the new site, looks like this:

Graham Macdonald – Corporate sponsorship, airline prizes, liaison with PMCI

Kevin Mitch - Fair organization, including all logistics and stalls

Kim Fletcher - Fair day sponsored Bike Ride and Pub Night

Mike Franklin - PR, advertising and Children’s Raffle

Brendan Richards - Posters, raffle tickets, liaison with Pattaya Mail

Phil Macdonald, David Smith (PMCI) - Pledge for Kids

Susie Ngamsuwan - Web Site

Neil Sandilands - Beer tent and organizing donated beer

Lewis Underwood – Chairman, overall co-ordination and liaison

The Aids Trust of Australia donates to Heartt2000 through the Pattaya Gay Festival

John Hull, who sponsored the prize money for the Mister PGF contest 2001, approached the Pattaya Gay Festival in April offering to help try and obtain some funding from the Aids Trust of Australia.

On his return to Australia he spoke with the trustees of the Aids Trust of Australia and put forward his suggestions for helping Heartt2000.

The PGF was later contacted by Terry Trethowan, fund manager of the Aids Trust of Australia requesting information on PGF and Heartt2000.

It was decided that the Aids Trust of Australia would make a donation specifically to Heartt2000 through the Pattaya Gay Festival.

On May 15th, 5,000 Australian dollars was transferred to Heartt2000 and on May 21st, it was deposited to the Heartt2000 account as 116,500 baht.

The PGF Committee and Heartt2000 wish to extend deepest thanks and appreciation to John Hull for his assistance in obtaining this donation, as well as to the Aids Trust of Australia and Terry Trethowan for their generosity in extending a helping hand to Heartt2000.

An up to date schedule of all Pattaya Gay Festival Events and a link to make donations to the PGF charities can be found on the PGF Web Site at: www.pattayagayfestival.com

AFT-ERC holds charity night for the elderly

Funds raised to go to Banglamung Home for the Aged

The Association of Filipinos in Thailand, Eastern Region chapter (AFT-ERC) held a charity night at the Marriott Hotel on May 25, organized by the AFT-ERC president, Virginia D. Sorensen.

Honored guests, Apichart Puechpant, deputy secretary of Pattaya City; Art Nieva, AFT-ERC chairman; H.E Ambassador Sonia C. Brady; superintendent of the Banglamung Home for the Aged Uttraporn Boonnak; president of Rotary Club of Taksin- Pattaya Peter Thorand and many members from AFT in Bangkok attended the function.

The function’s aim was to raise funds for elderly people in the Banglamung Home for the Aged by selling entrance tickets for 1,000 baht.

The party started with presentation speeches by honored guests, a sumptuous dinner and entertaining performances of Thai dancing, a fashion show, and music. Guests had great fun and the evening was a real success.

The association also took this opportunity to serve the Thai community by organizing charity activities such as the “Beach Cleaning Project” and its ongoing work with the Banglamung Home for the Aged.

For 50 years Thais and Filipinos have participated in cultural exchange, especially in the field of education. There are many Filipinos teaching in Thai schools around the nation.

British Chamber puts on a Royal evening

The ever resourceful British Chamber of Commerce Thailand (BCCT) held their May networking evening at the Royal Cliff Grand last weekend. These business opportunity meetings are always well attended, and the “Royal” occasion brought even more of the Chamber members to Pattaya, with over 100 attending.

Trevor Allen (Shenanigans/Ministry of Sound), Matthew Brennan (Ministry of Sound), Neil Robert (CMB Marketing) and Neil Morten (CMB Marketing).

Of course, the additional attraction of a most liberal sponsorship by the CMB Design and Build group was also very welcome. Matthew Brennan, one of the managing directors of the company that has recently constructed the Ministry of Sound nightclub in Bangkok spoke on the business opportunities available and how his company has just received notification of their successful tender for a large project in Dubai.

Assisting Matthew Brennan was Neil Morten, the other MD of CMB, a consultant from the UK who was so impressed with the operation that he bought into the company.

Amongst those who enjoyed the spectacular views from the Promenade Lounge at the Royal Cliff Grand were Maurice Bromley, the Thailand representative and director of the Henry Butcher industrial auctioneers, the young Matt Nordin from Moody’s the QA people, Ian Pascoe from Grant Thornton and Larry Peak, from MPA security services.

Graham Macdonald, local Eastern Seaboard representative of the BCCT, was delighted at the response to the evening, and it was noted that even he wore long trousers and a tie to fit in with the regal occasion!
