PSC 45th Members Tournament

Friday Dec. 17 Sriracha International Golf Club

Long time no see, was in our thoughts as we drove down to the course. Of course we all knew that many changes had been made, as every time we had visited of late it had resembled a building site, and many of us had decided to not visit, until it was finished. The Monthly was a chance for 130 players to see the new Sriracha, how would they take to the day.

Clive Robinson (left), Low Gross winner, Chris John, PSC Golf Chairman and Bob Rasmussen (right), High Points winner after the presentation at Sriracha.

Arriving there we were met by the usual efficient booking in, big advances have been made over the recent past until now it has become pretty good. A quick book in meant I had plenty of time to spare, so why not nip in for a bite to eat? The Continental breakfast looked good, so why not, with tea not coffee. A tea bag soon arrived in a small cup half full of water, then the wait started, and went on for 25 minutes until I really had to go, without of course, anything.

Onto the 10th tee, that used to be the 1st, and onto the course. The A & B Flights to play strokeplay the rest to play Stableford and off we go.

Flight Winners

The first thing that is apparent is the crocodiles have gone, yes I know they have been gone for a while but they are the main topic of conversation in nearly all fourballs. Happy memories, and it’s the only place I can never remember people swimming in the water to be ball retrievers. Now there’s an idea, what a way to sell your surplus crocs off.

So to the game, and it was difficult, and one of the single handicappers in our 4 ball said that he was trying to hit it onto the tarmac paths so he could get a soft lie, the hard fairways destroyed his game and most of us struggled. The course needs some serious rain as there does not appear to be any watering carried out. Green grass is in short supply.

Bill Plath with his Hole in one ball on the 17th.

Not that it was all despair, as I am sure in time they will get it right, the changes seem pretty good and given that the major changes have been made, now is the time for fine tuning.

Back in the clubhouse, and what a fine facility, we all had a hot shower, yes the power was on, and went up to the special room they lay on for functions such as this.

A good ‘Eat all you can for 199 baht buffet’ was laid on, not much more than my tea bag, and the boys gradually filtered in and started into the cold beers. Then the news started to filter around that there had been a hole in one at the 17th hole.

A little checking around and I found out it was Bill Plath. Of course he reluctantly told me how he had done it, and allowed me to take his photo. To offset this feat, I had to put forward one of the players who played with me, Bjorne Nordey, for a special prize, ‘The Shortest drive of the day’, he managed to drive the ball 1 inch on the 18th hole, the ball nearly rested on the tee peg. Eat your heart out Mr Plath

So the results and despite the difficult conditions they were not too bad. In the A Flight Tony Oakes won with a net 68 ahead of a countback for second on net 70 won by Ted Morris ahead of John McMullen.

In the B Flight the scores were also quite good with the winner Alan Hayward scoring a net 68 ahead of Nick Haueis in second with a net 69 and in third was Kim Payne with a net 71.

In the C Flight, and we come onto the Stableford scores. Naturally the scores were a little better and the winner with 43 points was John Dearden, ahead of Elias Magnussen in second with 40 points and in third was the M.C. Alan Pearce with 39 points.

The D Flight is usually the highest scoring of the Flights, but on this day it was a strangely subdued bunch, with the winner being Alex Backlund with 39 points ahead of George Hope in second and in third was Danny Dyke with 37 points.

So to the Ladies, and the winner was Usa Chaiyosit with 38 points winning a countback over Moon Schwulera in second and Mam Trayling in third with 34 points.

The main winners, and ‘Didn’t they do well?’ The winner of the Highest Points was Bob Rasmussen with 46 points, and the winner of the Low Gross was that fine fellow Clive Robinson. Clive in another life strives to be ‘The Master Fisherman’ and hopes one day to catch ‘The Big One’.

The presentation over the Golf Chairman thanked the team who helped him and his sponsors, in particular, PSC, Diana Group, Blue Parrot, Tahitian Queen, Harley Bar, Las Vegas and last but not least Sriracha Golf Club who gave a free Years Membership to a lucky winner valued at 29,000 baht.

The Golf Chairman then reminded all about the Charity Classic to be held on January 21st at Phoenix, when the PSC regularly makes a lot of money to aid it’s good work in aiding Local Charities. Please give it your support.

Results:
Low Gross: Clive Robinson
Highest Points: Bob Rasmussen
A Flight Winner Tony Oakes; Second Ted Morris; Third John McMullen.
B Flight Winner Alan Haywood; Second Nick Haueis; Third Kim Payne.
C Flight Winner John Dearden; Second Elias Magnussen; Third Alan Pearce
D Flight Winner Alex Backlund; Second George Hope; Third Danny Dyke
L Flight Winner Usa Chaiyosit; Second Moon Schwulera; Third Mam Trayling

Correction

In the Pattaya Mail’s article on the Thai National Lawn Bowling Championships (page 56, Issue 50, Volume 12) two points need further clarification, as received by the Thai Lawn Bowls Association.

1. Lawn Bowls was not introduced to Thailand by Princess Mother. In fact the Princess Mother introduced the sport of Betong.

2. There are currently only 4 greens in Thailand, not 12 as stated, the remaining number is under consideration.

We regret any inconvenience caused.

PSC golf from the Three Sisters Bar

Another cloudless day and another great score. Again the course was in good shape being dried out by the north winds. A cold wind blew and the humidity was down to make it a great day for the golfers.

Winner Doug Chalkley (right) with Jim Tully, cellar dweller.

Coming in with the best score for the day was Doug Chalkley. Doug creamed the field by 7 shots as he posted a net score of 44 points for the day. His game was spot on as his drives and fairway shots was either on or near the green. No one had a chance to catch up with Doug as the nearest posted 37 points

The closest competitors were Kenny Mau and Paul Kraft. Both golfers posted scores of 37 points, but fell well short of the leader. Following a shot back was Herb Ishinaga.

Tully again tumbled into the cellar coming in with 23 points. It seems lately that Tully can’t seem to find his game to put it in order. At his age, 70 plus years, it is still great to see him out there competing with the rest of us. Giving Tully a scare was Paul Kinner. Paul had a bad day and managed only 26 points. He was afraid the he might be holding the bag for the week but Tully tumbled past to save the day.

PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s Beach Bar

Tuesday Dec. 14 Plutaluang

This was the first golfing outlet under our new name, this used to be called the 60s Bar but is now under new ownership.

Bob Noble (left) with Bert and Pu after the first day out from Tropical Berts.

Unfortunately renovation of the bar was not fully completed, but Bert and Pu managed to put up a first class breakfast which was enjoyed by all, and said we could give the bar a first class Christening next Tuesday.

Golf was played at Plutaluang Royal Thai Navy course, a course that is improving month by month and gives great value for your money.

We played the North and West layouts, considered by many the two most demanding, but which gives rewards for good shots.

Results: 1st place Bob Lawrence; 2nd Bob Noble; 3rd Colin Bavington.

It is expected that this day will shortly come under the banner of PSC as its predecessor did, once Bert fully settles in. The format will be similar also to its predecessors. T.T.F.N.

PSC golf from the Cafe Kronborg

Monday Dec. 13 Century Bang Chang Stableford

The course was host to a Stableford Competition in two Flights, A Flight 0 to 19, and B Flight 20 and above. The course on the day was in good condition and it was noted that the new clubhouse should be open in a few weeks.

Ted Morris

Tom Breslin with a days best score of 41 points took the A Flight, Don Richardson was second with 36 points and Pekka Raiha in third, beat Ted Morris, into fourth, on countback with 35 points.

In the B Flight Suzi Lawton took the honors with a fine 39 points. Aussie Barry Kerr continued his fine comeback form with 38 points to come second. Henk De Bock was third with 36 points and Barry Chadbourn fourth with 34 points

Near Pins: #5 Barry Chadbourn; #7 Einar Johannson; #13 Tom Breslin; #15 Jan Lovgren

Long Putts: #9 Norman Martin; #18 Ebrahim

Thursday Dec. 16 Treasure Hill Stroke

This was always going to be a tough day, not only did we have to contend with a long drive to Treasure Hills and windy conditions, but this was the morning after the Xmas Party. As I sat there, not well, booking people in, I was surrounded by happy, smiling faces.

Barry Kerr

The course proved to be dry and in the main difficult, and it was noted that only one good score came in from either Flight, and surprisingly both had been at the Xmas Party the night, and morning probably, before.

The A Flight, 0 to 18, was won by a bright-eyed Tom Morris, who came in with a pretty amazing net 64. In second was Ralf Zwick with a net 73 and then we had a 4 way countback for third and fourth on net 74. In third came Don Richardson, in fourth came Paul Huneker and just missing out were Takeshi Hakozaki and Michele Sanchillo.

Tom Breslin

In the B Flight we had an even more amazing net 64 by Barry Kerr who has been in top form of late. In second was Bob Rasmussen with a net 72 with Einar Utoft in third with net 74 and Elias Magnussen in fourth with a net 75.

Near Pins: #2 Nick Aleuis; #6 Michele Sanchillo; #13 Bill Knight; #17 Gary Wedl.

Long Putt: #9 Nev Goode

Nowell’s Best Ever at Green Valley

IPGC Bunker Boys at the OK Corral

Monday and Tuesday, December 13 and 14 saw two dozen golfers from the OK Corral take on Green Valley at its finest, over two days, for a medal eclectic event. The course is now filling up with Korean golfers and on the first day the competition started on the twelfth tee, making the start slightly easier, but the stiff breeze was to play a key role in the proceedings. Two players from the first group were going head-to-head throughout with Bob Lindborg posting an excellent net 68, one better then Jack Spencer’s 69, to take second place. Playing partner Steve Nowell was playing the round of his life, dropping only two shots to the course and his gross 74, net 64, was a tough target to set for the second day.

Tuesday dawned and the eclectic nature of the event kicked in with scores compared and tactics changed. The best round on the second day was that of Peter Emslie and his net 67 held the overall lead for almost an hour. Eclectically Saranya Chaiyanont and Dave Smith joined him at the top with net 64. Steve Nowell was suffering from the tension, but he crucially managed to squeeze two more shots out of the course and end the day on net 62 to take the honours. Jack Spencer had the honour of shooting three birdie two’s whilst Bob Lindborg, Peter Emslie, Roy Mitchell and Brian Bellis also had a share of the large pot for their similar efforts.

Visitor Kenneth Andersen, a good golfer indeed, found his first golf in Thailand tough and he was awarded the Bananas for his valiant efforts. Ultimately for Steve Nowell it was a fine way of ending his current spell in Thailand, as he returns to UK for Christmas and New Year, and we all wish him a “Happy No?l”.

‘Ace’ Sets the Pace at Bob Pearce’s Birthday Bash at Pattaya Country Club

Bob Pearce reached the age of seniority on Thursday, December 16 and invited forty golfers from the OK Corral to join him in a stableford competition at Pattaya Country Club by way of celebration. All the many prizes were kindly donated by Bob and the course befitted the occasion. The large field was cut at eighteen and under and in division two Richard Wardell and Roy Mitchell shared runner-up place with their 34 point hauls. Way out in front was Richard Tereszkiewicz with the formidable total of forty points and he took the first major prize donated by Birthday Bob.

In division one Bill Hewitt and John Healy also played under-par golf and recorded 39 points to share second place. Back in August Al “Ace” McGrory hit the headlines with his hole-in-one and on his return this day was presented with his trophy from the club and this set him up perfectly for another fine round. His forty-two points was enough the blow away the top-flight opposition and was a fine performance by this quality golfer. Four golfers shared the large Super Sawng pot with Wilf Latham enjoying two, whilst Dave Smith and Ya Chaiyanont raised their glasses also.

Technical Prize Winners were: Long Putts: Norm Robinson and Al McGrory, and Near Pins: Don Frances, Kenneth Andersen, Bill Hewitt and Wilf Latham. Angus MacFarlane had returned the previous day and was later to star at the presentation party at the OK Corral and, purely because of that reason, he was presented with the famed Bananas.

Bob Pearce’s birthday wish had come true, to enjoy a memorable day in the company of his many friends, playing the game they love best. Happy Birthday Bob!

Gerry Power(s) to Victory

IPGC Golf From Lewiinski’s!

Sunday Dec. 12
Green Valley
Stableford

1st A Flight: Gerry Power, net 67 - Monthly Medal Winner
2nd A Flight: Jack Grindvold, net 68
3rd A Flight: Klaus Schackt, net 70
1st B Flight: Jim Munns, net 72
2nd B Flight: Paul Walia, net 74
3rd B Flight: Roger Yabsley, net 74
1st C Flight: Neil Cameron, net 73
2nd C Flight: Bob Lindborg, net 74
3rd C Flight: Larry Nicholas, net 74
1st D Flight: Sugar Ray Hanford, net 74
2nd D Flight: Jan Eriksen, net 75
3rd D Flight: Paul Shaw, net 76
Near Pins: #13 Rick Sharp; #16 Karl Holm

Gerry Power is recognized as a player that can shoot as well as he wants and that potential was realized again on Sunday with a Monthly Medal winning net 67 off of a ten handicap. That was one stroke better than October’s winner, and the only other player to net below 70, Jack Grindvold. Klaus Schackt showed why A Flight is the premier Flight as he made it a clean sweep of sub handicappers on the A podium with his net 70.

The balance of the Flights found the going tougher when “you have to count ‘em all” but familiar names abounded. The good Capt. Fogg showed his level 72 off his new 13 handicap was good enough for B Flight and the count back resolved combo of Paul Walia and Roger Yabsley. The Club maker to the Stars bettered a three-way knot of golfers in C Flight. The Guru of Green Valley, true to his name, came out atop those mathematics, with the Irish Crustacean leaving poor Glen Perkinson out in the financial cold. Suga’ Ray began a podium parade in D Flight which was separated by a stroke apiece. Jan Eriksen and Paul Shaw were in that parade.

Monday Dec. 13
Treasure Hill - White or Yellow Tees
Stableford

1st White Flight: Nick Haueis, 39 pts
2nd White Flight: Michele Sancillo, 26 pts
1st Yellow Flight: Ray Dell, 36 pts
2nd Yellow Flight: Bob Patterson, 36 pts
3rd Yellow Flight; Tore Eliassen, 34 pts
Near Pin: # 17 Paddy Wilson

Hey who is that guy? That was the query as newcomer Nick Haueis hung a 13 point gap on the balance of the White Tee field, which were led by another newcomer Michele Sancillo. Those queries changed to cheers as Nick’s play through the balance of the week verified his 15 handicap, so he just had a day, well ... a great day off the 6,726 yard yellow configuration. We have all had ‘em, so congrats to Nick! Ray Dell had a fine round off the whites, which are themselves 6,377 yards! That is not bad either. Freshly-arrived old friend Bob Patterson served notice that jet lag is behind him as he came second. Another tremendously nice guy, Tore Eliassen swept up the last monies in B Flight along with the bronze.

Wednesday Dec. 15
Burapha - A & B -Blue or White Tees
Stableford

1st Blue A Flight: Chris Davisson, 41 pts
2nd Blue A Flight: Jack Grindvold, 40 pts
3rd Blue A Flight: Guy Billings, 39 pts
1st Blue B Flight: Mike Seely, 40 pts
2nd Blue B Flight: Ralf Zwick, 37 pts
3rd Blue B Flight: Charles Li, 36 pts
1st White Flight: Colin Davis, 45 pts
2nd White Flight: Keith Avery, 45 pts
3rd White Flight: Ray Dell, 43 pts
Near Pins: #A6 Guy Billings; #B8 Phil Corbin

Whereas Monday’s Treasure Hill course gives the player a choice between the very difficult yellow tees or the simply difficult white tees, Burapha offers a different challenge. The white tees are usually emasculated despite the difficulty of Nos. 8, 9 and 10. The blue tees offer a more challenging, although still reasonable, set-up, but of course Nos. 8, 9 and 10 become almost unreachable. Two-thirds of the field chose to take on the Blues. Brave lads, these!

The Donkey verified the above analysis as he ransacked the White teed course for 45 points. Given that, he still need a count back to better hand luck Keith Avery who was equally remarkable at 45 points. Ray Dell rounded out the punishment as he was left with only third despite a remarkable 43 points! K4 went penniless with 42, as did Shakey Pete with 39, The Hermit with 38 and The Mechanic with 37.

Old friend Chris Davisson returned from a bit of a hiatus from the Society and made his presence felt immediately with an extremely impressive 41 points off the Blues to win the A Flight. Wacko Jacko was just adrift with 40, with another favorite, albeit prodigal, son, Guy Billings in third with 39 points. Paul Young’s round of 37 deserves highlighting for its quality over the longer configuration, but that won’t get Paul a cup of coffee. In the Blue B Flight Mike Seely came across the road from the Sugar Shack and threw 40 points at the field and that was good enough to relegate Ralf Zwick, the last name on the handicap roster and I dare say a lot of Phone Books, and Charles Li to second and third, respectively.

Friday Dec. 17
Green Valley -White Tees
4-Person Scramble - Stroke/Medal

1st John Emmerson/Fred Theobald/ Jan Eriksen/Gerry Power, net 57.40

2nd Ken Kutzing/Brian Holden/ Ray Dell/Roger Yabsley, net 58.0

The Society hadn’t done a weekly comp 4-man Scramble in memory, but Golf Manager John Emmerson supported the input of some members and set the competition up. It was also deemed a bit of a tune-up for the OK Corral’s Bunker 4-person Scramble. 9 teams’ worth of players showed up, and the contest was on. John even came off the injured reserve, where he has been for a couple of months due to a bad back, and joined the venerable Fred Theobald, quiet Jan Eriksen and the newly crowned medalist, Gerry Power, to run the table with a net 57.40. Each team received 1/10 of their combined handicap. Just as the winners crossed international lines, the second place team utilized a couple of Yanks, a Brit and an Aussie, to finish with a tidy net 58.0. Everyone deemed the format a success and don’t be surprised if you see it again, despite the logistical challenge of having a number of players divisible by four.

Phuket Regatta: Ocean Marina sailors triumph

Peter Cummins, Phuket

Bill Gasson, one of the best-known personalities at the Ocean Marina - on and off the water - recently launched his new super-fast sports boat, the “Buzz 8”, built at his enormous Buzzcat Thailand facilities at the Ocean Marina.

Gladys Gutenberg” in the Ocean Rover Division sporting a bright green Beer Chang spinnaker in full flight.

Within days, without even time for a “shake-down” cruise - an imperative trial for any new craft, to test the hull, fittings, sails and rigging - Bill trailered the “Buzz 8” to Phuket. There, with Geoff Backshall and his team taking charge, it was an incredible annihilation of the highly-competitive Sports Boat Class in the 18th Phuket King’s Cup Regatta, sailed from December 5 - 11, winning the six races counted out of the seven sailed, for a perfect score.

Sponsored this year by the Hilton Phuket Arcadia Resort and Spa, this convincing win represents the fifth time one of Gasson’s “Buzz Boats” has won the top honours at the King’s Cup Regatta.

Behind “Buzz 8” was David Bell’s “Pink Pussy Cat”, the Fremantle 8, also a steady competitor at the monthly race weekends, which finished third in the Sports Boat Class.

It was the very first race, actually, which was the “Buzz 8” shake-down and some dislodged steering gear cost precious minutes, relegating the craft to eighth place on the day. Thereafter, there was never any doubt about who was in charge.

Elsewhere, during the highly successful Phuket event, friends and neighbours of the Ocean Marina Yacht Club (OMYC) also fared well. John Vause, a consistent sailor at the OMYC monthly race weekends, won clearly the ITC 1 Class event on his Young 11-designed “Ruby Tuesday”.

A permanent OMYC regatta competitor, Radab Kanchanavanit, leaving his “Cedar Swan” on the hard-standing for repairs this year, helmed the “Gladys Gutenberg” in the Ocean Rover Division, sporting the spectacular sponsor Chang Beer bright green spinnaker.

Royal Varuna - and OMYC - sailors Morton Jakobson and Jens Overgaard were sixth in the Sports Boat category.

Just a little further south, the Royal Thai Navy sailors P.O. Vivat Poonpat and Lt Jg Veerasit Puangnak (many times national Laser champ of Thailand and a Sydney Olympian) finished first and second, respectively, in the 22-strong IRC 2 Class, the biggest numerically in the King’s Cup.

Yet, even further south and also another ardent supporter of Ocean Marina YC activities, were Kym Thomas and Peter Plant, racing their fast Samui-built tandem catamaran, “Coco Blues”, winning - albeit narrowly - the Multi-hull Class.

In January 2005, Bill is planning to launch his latest Buzzcat, a 42-ft. sailing and power craft

The 18th Phuket King’s Cup Regatta was, arguably, the best on record. Sailors from host country Thailand excelled in several of the classes, with a total of five nationalities taking the honours in the 10 classes constituting the weeklong ‘yachting-fest’. As usual, the regatta was a week of fine racing, excellent conditions, great parties and good fellowship.

Even the wind obliged this time, blowing fairly steadily from the north-east (where it should be at this time of the year on the Andaman Sea), with a daily average of some 12 - 15 knots. Over the years, this has not always been the case.

Since the inaugural event, established to salute the monarch on his sixth-cycle, 60th birthday in 1987, the regatta has been held over the week of the Royal birthday, this year, for the first time, actually opening on the day itself, with a candle-lit ceremony on the beach-front of the Kata Resort.

It has developed - with a few minor set-backs, such as the 1997 economic melt-down, SARS, the Bali bombing, the war in Iraq and Avian Flu which have affected tourism in general - to this year’s record-breaker. It is not just in the number of entries of 101 craft registered in 10 classes, but also 2004 set the stage for a huge corps of more than 120 press, media and television personnel reaching out to the four corners of the world.

It also included, a potential candidate for adding to the “Guinness Book of Records”, with the briefest speech this writer has ever heard: the official opening of the regatta was delegated to a prominent citizen, who must remain anonymous. He was called up on stage, after many long speeches, took the microphone, “I declare the regatta open”, he said and exited immediately. (Five words must be rated as the shortest speech on record).

Apart from building more new craft and launching his latest, the 42-ft. sailing and power Buzzcat in January, Bill is also planning the “Top of the Gulf Regatta, ling and power - Bill is now preparing to organize a “Top of the Gulf” Regatta” for the first week in May, 2005 which, undoubtedly will be the biggest event to be held in the Jomtien-Pattaya waters.

This will be sponsored by the Ocean Marina Buzzmarine Co, and the Ocean Marina. Bill’s company will also handle a franchise in the Gulf of Thailand and Bangkok for Simpson Marine, Asia’s largest yacht broker which is expected to give support for yacht racing in the Jomtien-Pattaya area.

On to the 19th
Regatta

H.E. Udomsak Uswarangkura, Governor of Phuket, addressing the Royal Awards Ceremony closing the 18th Phuket King’s Cup Regatta remarked; “These past 17 years have been most fruitful for Phuket’s development and throughout this rapid growth, Phuket officials have been acutely aware of the environmental impact of such a building boom.”

“There are really few human activities”,he concluded “as environmentally-friendly as yacht racing, sailing and cruising and thus we find that a regatta of this magnitude, is an ideal conduit for promoting a “clean, green” Phuket.. The immense media and press coverage which, I understand, this year has been the biggest - especially for television - reaches a vast audience world-wide showing the beauty of Phuket , the neighbouring islands, the Andaman Sea and our environs.”

And so, as, HM the King’s Personal Representative Rear Admiral M.L. Usni Pramoj, passed over the splendid permanent King’s Cup trophy designed by Regatta Co-founder M.L.Tri Devakul to incumbent president Chris King, the stage was already set for the 19th Regatta to be held from 3 to 10 December, 2005.

Dige digs up the grit at Great Lake

PSC golf with The Bunker

On a sunny day The Bunker Boys found the fairways dry but the greens in good condition at Great Lake Golf and Country Club which was the setting for their Stableford competition on Monday 13th December. Scoring was again high at this course, which has some challenging but very interesting holes.

The boys ready willing and able for yet another round from the Bunker.

The field was divided into two Divisions A and B. In Division A Gary Austin scored 34 Stableford points to finish third while Brian Wilkins came second with one point more but top of the tree was Michael Dige playing off a handicap of 4 who shot a gritty 38 Stableford points to take first prize.

In Division B the winner for the first time ever was Scotsman Bob Lawrence who returned to the clubhouse with a magnificent 40 Stableford points - well done Bob!

Joint second were Paul Rose and Les Hall last month’s Golfer of the Month both with 37 points. Near Pin prizes were awarded to Duncan Lee, Paul Rose, Michael Anderssen and Michael Dige.

Bangpra Golf Club Wednesday Dec. 15

On another typical sunny day Bangpra golf course hosted The Boys from The Bunker for a Medal competition.

With the fairways again dry and the greens renowned for their speed very fast as usual the scoring was again high except for one supersonic score. In Division A P.J. Redmond who plays three times a week had a day golfers dream about, playing off 18 handicap P.J. returned a net score of 63 to romp away with first prize, second, a whopping 9 shots behind; on a level par 72 came George May and a further shot back in third place was Mick Ramshaw with Net 73.

In Division B Welshman Curtis Hessler scored a very good two under par Net 70 to win ahead of Paul Rose with Net 77 and third place went to Les Hall with Net 81.

Near Pin prizes went to John Preddy, P.J. Redmond, George May and Brian Maddox whose tee shot finished less than a foot from the hole!

Siam Country Club

On yet another sunny day in Paradise Siam Country club was the venue on Friday December 17 for The Bunker Boys to have a Stableford competition. With the greens and the fairways in good condition Siam was a pleasure to play especially for John Preddy who returned the best score of the day 40 Stableford points to win first prize.

Following John in second place came Bob Lawrence who has had his best week of golf in a long time with 37 points and in third place was Mick Ramshaw with 35 points.

Near Pin prizes were awarded to Mike Lloyd, Gary Austin and the other two were claimed by Rod Steward (not the pop star!)

The Bunker Boys are playing three times a week during the high season (Monday’s Wednesday’s and Friday’s) so if you fancy a round of golf call into The Bunker Bar on Soi Chaiyapoon (near X-zyte disco) to pick up a golf schedule or consult the Pattaya Mail every week and, as usual you can get the latest information about all other sporting activities at The Bunker Bar by visiting our website @ www.bunkerboysgolf.com

PSC golf from McAllisters Bar & Grill

Friday Dec. 17 Century Bang Chang Stableford

Seems that not all members want to play the Monthly Tournament but like to play the more relaxed day at McAllisters. So on a day that 130+ players turned out in the Monthly Tournament the turnout at this outlet took care of many others. On the day the number of players was not far from normal and is a testimony to the growing fame of this day out.

Ray Spurling (left) and Paul Kraft both finised the round with 38 stableford points. They were joined by one of Don’s lovely staff for the photo.

The day was fine with Century Bang Chang in fine condition, and all players enjoyed a fine round before returning to McAllisters for food and song and the tender touch.

In the frame were old favorites Ray Spurling and Paul Kraft, both with 38 points, with Ray winning on countback. The players then enjoyed a fine afternoon, particularly as ‘No Show Joe’ made an appearance and rang the bell 4 times. T.T.F.N.

MotoGP - What it’s all about?

Over the last couple of years there has been a significant change in the format of the premier class of tarmac motorcycling racing.

In the days of the screaming two strokes the series was called the 500 GP World Championship; it is now known as MotoGP.

Max Biaggi and Sete Gibernau in the wet at Jerez, Spain 2004.

Power plants for this class of racing are four-stroke engines with a capacity limit of 1 litre with any number of cylinders in any configuration. Tyre technology and machine geometry allow incredible angles of lean on corners; the engines bellow and grunt their way around the track and with the advent of mini cam technology some incredible views are available from on-board cameras.

The series is supported by the majority of the motorcycle manufacturers in two ways; by conventional factory teams (two riders per team) and by the supply of engines and / or complete machines to other teams. There are 24 riders committed to the series and local ‘wild cards’ are entered at most circuits making 30 racers on the grid.

MotoGP equates to Formula F1 in the car racing world, but that is all that can be compared! MotoGP engines put out about 200 bhp to propel these machines to speeds of 320 kph (200 mph).

The contact patch between the rear tyre and the road that transmits the power is about the same as a human hand. Changes of pace and direction are phenomenal to say the least. The power, agility and improved carbon brakes combined with the size of the motorcycle relative to track width allows overtaking to be more easily carried out. No boring “overtaking in the pits”, all of the overtaking is done on the track. Watch and marvel at manoeuvres that permit overtaking / undertaking in what would appear to be impossible situations.

There are no stops (with safety considerations the exception) and frequent change of position occurs over the opening laps, the middle of the race and of course the epic jostling and exchange of fairing paint on the way to the chequered flag.

Dependent on the specific length of a particular circuit the race will be over a distance of something less than thirty laps and of about 45 minutes duration. The good news is that in 2004 races were shown live on Thai TV, UBC and one of the Sophon feeds. The same programme line up has been registered for 2005; thus, even without access to UBC it will be possible to watch MotoGP live on any TV. Race programmers also seem to be in touch with their Formula F1 counterparts and while race day is almost always on a Sunday there are very few date clashes with F1.

The 2004 season closed with Yamaha mounted Valentino Rossi World Champion. This was particularly notable on two counts; Yamaha have not won the series since the early 1990’s and Rossi, also World Champion in 2003, switched from Honda to Yamaha for 2004.

The opening round of the 2005 season is on April 10 at the Welkom circuit in South Africa. There are 17 rounds in all and the season will end early in November in Valencia, Spain.

Over the close season there will be reports on the team / riders line up for 2005, some action pictures from 2004 together with rider profiles, pit gossip etc.

Lobby blown away by Dang’s Guesthouse!

The Original Pattaya Pool League -December 13

Group B: The Lobby 3 - 6 Dang’s Guesthouse

You can’t miss The Lobby Bar in Soi Buakhao. Just walk down Soi Diana and look for the two red English Telephone boxes across the road and you’re there! After a short sprint from round the corner in Soi Lengkee, the Dang’s Guesthouse team was raring to go at 8.30 p.m. sharp.

Moaner-Geeza Jack (Lobby) warily sized up his opponent Ramsay as play commenced. This was going to be a fast game as both are seasoned League players.

Team captains and players celebrate after an evening of fun.

Ramsay struck first by potting 3 spots in quick succession and then Jack defiantly returned with 4 stripes. Ramsay retaliated by picking off his last 3 balls and immediately rolled the black down with no trouble at all. Dang’s 1-0.

“Sniffer” Jezz broke and potted 2 balls, a spot and the white! Karl (Dang’s) had 2 shots now and on his second shot potted 2 balls... another spot and the white! With, 2 spots down, 2 shots and still an open table, Jezz sniffed out 2 more spots leaving the white safe this time. Karl slowed the game down now, surveying each ball, scrutinizing every angle as well as constantly checking the sidewall of the bar. Was he contemplating moving the wall to one side? 4 stripes down and Karl had soon levelled things up. He soon potted his last stripe but went in-off giving Jezz his chance for victory. But it was not to be as Jezz narrowly missed the pot, later leaving an easy winning black for Karl. Dang’s 2-0.

Lobby’s Captain, Paul was more resolved than anyone to close the gap in games now against Geoff. No one knows the table like Paul does and it showed. Having won the toss he smashed the balls into oblivion quickly sinking a spot. When Geoff fouled soon after by potting a stripe and a spot, Paul decided it was time to prove a point. Mercilessly he blasted 4 spots cleanly down. Geoff potted one more stripe before Paul finished off his spots. Suddenly Paul relaxed and gently nudged the black towards the corner but it came to a rest over the hole! Geoff cracked under the pressure and even with 4 stripes still on the table he fouled, thus sacrificing the game. Lobby 1 - 2.

Steve (as did everyone who was sitting downwind of his opponent) learnt a valuable lesson when he played against Dang’s secret weapon, “Turbo-Bottom” Curley next: never stand behind him when he plays a shot! Steve played a safe game but Curley was soon down to his last 2 spots on the table, even sneaking one down through his 7 stripes remaining on the table. Despite surrounding the black with his stripes this was still not enough for Steve as Curley picked off his final spot pushing the black back into the open. It was then that Curley, using a rest and leaning over the table, let rip (literally) with his final shot on the black, slicing it into the corner. Dang’s 3 - 1.

“B-Jaegermeister” aka Geoff, Lobby’s newest player, proved his worth by stealing a game back against Finny in the 5th game. But Finny didn’t make it easy for him. It was close all the way to the end with both players cannoning balls into pockets but when Finny went in-off near the end Geoff used his 2 shots wisely on the black and was triumphant. Lobby 2 - 3.

The last singles game saw Dave (Dang’s Captain) break against Clarkie. With a spot and a stripe down off the break, Dave chose stripes and quickly potted 4 more. Clarkie sank a ball and snookered Dave but this just made him play with more determination. Dave was soon down to the black and calmly finished off rolling it down the side rail to win. Dang’s 4 - 2.

The home team only needed to win the next 3 games to win the match, so the pressure was certainly on B-Jaegermeister and Steve as they realised they were up against Ramsay and “Fosters” Gary, who had been observing and commentating at times from the sidelines for the whole match! Gary set up Ramsay perfectly with his position play and everybody just stood back as the canny Scot cleared up making this game look all too easy!

Jezz and Moz faced “Turbo-Bottom” and Scoff. After a dry break from Moz, Curley played a trick shot sinking a stripe and then fouled (not literally). Jezz potted 2 and played safe again. Moz later followed through with the white granting Curley 2 shots who then set Scoff up to finish, leaving only one stripe on the table before the black. But Jezz forced Scoff to foul. Moz thought he had left the black difficult for Curley but when it came to his turn Curley lined up the shot and played a bank off the top rail sending the black down the hole at the opposite end, cheekily looking away towards camera at the same time! Dang’s 5 - 2.

The final game of the night went to home team players Paul and Clarkie, beating Dave and Finny. It was a battle between the two captains in the end but Paul never lost his cool. So when Clarkie forced Dave to foul, Paul used his 2 shots to clear his last 3 spots and set himself up with his spare shot on the black to win. Just at that moment the door at the entrance to the bar blew open. Was it caused by Curley’s flatulence or was it the ghost of Tim making another sharp exit? No one will ever know for sure...

Mickey Mouse Darts League - Week 9

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone. There will be no darts until January 7, when the Mickey Mouse Dart will re-commence with week 10 of the league.

The table log jams again

Jomtien 8-Ball Pool League

There were some surprise results this week with top of the table Hide-A-Way going down to Lucky Bar 4-5 while bottom of the table Moonshine Place cleared up at home to Country Club.

Elsewhere, Bolaget had an easy victory at home to Woaw’s bar. After both teams taking two each of the first four singles games Woaw’s Bar buckled under to go into the break 4-2 down. A Bolaget “pessimist wit” was heard to comment “We can still lose 4-5 if we try really hard”. However, the possibility of a comeback by Woaw’s evaporated with the first of the doubles games.

Moonshine Place hosted Country Club for a round of 8 Ball on Thursday, December 16.

Woaw’s were ahead in the frame with all colours potted and the black over a pocket and Bolaget still needing to sink four of their colours. A neat pot on the back followed a split-second later by the white disappearing down the same hole. Game over Bolaget the winners. A disheartened Woaw’s gave up on the final two games to make it 7-2 to the jubilant home side.

After a season without success it was predicted last week that Moonshine’s home game to Country Club might be there best chance of getting some points on the score sheet. The home team duly conspired to make that prediction come true with a 6-3 win over their visitors. Although Moonshine took the first four games to raise their hopes these were not easy games. In particular Alan’s win over Niko was more a case of Niko losing rather than Alan winning. Niko had cleared his colours and was attempting a difficult black when he went in off. 4-2 up at the interval (lovely scotch broth by Ted) the homers took the victory with the first doubles game when Country Club left an easy black. The final two games were one apiece giving Moonshine Place 6-3 on the night and three points in the table.

These results are after all teams have played the same number of games. There are now only 12 points from top to bottom of the league table with the emerging sides being Lucky Bar and Bolaget. The prediction for next weeks fixtures is that Hide-A-Way should take the points at home to Moonshine place while there will be a hard fought match at Bolaget who host Lucky Bar.

French held by Germans and slip off the pace

MBMG Bangkok Casuals League - week 11

The MBMG International League entered the penultimate weekend before Christmas showing no signs of slowdown.

Most managers around the globe know the folly of uttering predictions of unbeaten seasons. French managers however do seem to have an unearthly fascination with tempting fate and the odds. French manager, mathematician and media-man Arnaud falling for AFC supremo Holloway’s mind games responded with, “There are only 2 types of teams in the league: Those that have been beaten by the French, and those that will be”. Only to discover a third entry, The German All Stars. 2-0 ahead and cruising Les Gauloises learned what all ‘low-life’ Brits know, you never write off the Germans. That man Joerg scoring a brace to bring about a 2-2 result. Taking ones foot off the ‘gas’ proving costly for the French.

The almost back to former glory Dubliner, ensured going into the break as the angels atop the Christmas tree, with a 5-0 sneak attack upon Bangkok United. The Mielkeman conducting a symphony from the back, leaving the Japanese wondering where all that possession went. De Souza’s first of the season an advent calendar delight to be savoured.

The Londoner in one of their poorest performances of the season resolutely managed a 6-1 winning margin over a plucky Patana side. Wild’s two goals taking him past Bookhammer’s nine in the hunt for the golden boot.

The Sukhumvit 33/1 derby, a huge game for both sides, the Bullshead trying to consolidate their position as the first soi dog, and the Robin Hood trying to muscle into their territory (league wise of course). The Robin Hood playing the generous host gave away three easy goals, Christmas dinner and keys to the soi before half-time. A battling second half was not enough to prevent a 3-1 defeat.

The Pattaya derby an ‘even stevens’ match ended three apiece. Results and scorers still filtering back from the deep south. The misery continued for the Scandinavian Vikings as they handed the British Club casuals a bye and a 3-0 win.

Super Sunday and a super result for the much improved Winking Frog. With the addition of fresh legs the Winking Frog are beginning to get a good squad of players providing much needed cohesion in the middle of the park. The tactical switch to five in midfield paying dividends with the Frogs being able to dictate play. Gia and Diallo scoring two each before the Shrewbury lads had time to say, “jolly hockey sticks”. A penalty before half time gave AFC a slender lifeline, adding a second after the break gave them hope until Kew rejected by the British Club for being too young, broke the back of the champagne Charlies’ comeback with his opening goal of the season.

The Frog’s against the GAS and Les Gauloises vs. BU looking like top picks for next weekend.

Week 11 Results: Patana 1 - 6 Londoner FC; Robin Hood FC 1 - 3 Bulls Head Brazilians; Scandinavian Vikings 0 - 3 British Club Casuals; Bangkok United 0 - 5 The Dubliner; Racing Club Pattaya 3 - 3 Seaboard FC; German All Stars 2 - 2 Les Gaulois de Bangkok; AFC Shrewsbury 2 - 5 The Winking Frog FC.

The Square Ring

by Howie Reed

How bad did Vitali pound on British sensation Danny Williams a couple of weeks past? After the fight Klitschko was rushed to the hospital with what he though were two broken hands. He pounded on Williams so hard and so long he thought his hands were broken. Just swollen and bruised. Williams said he kept going in the tradition of Rocky Marciano (49-0). Well Mr. Williams I saw Rocky Marciano fight on May 16, 1955 at San Francisco’s Kezar Stadium against Don Cockell (65-11-1). Let me tell you Mr. Williams, “You are no Rocky Marciano.” What many don’t realize is that the “Roc” was not a bad defensive fighter. Williams defensive skills consist mainly of getting hit...lots. Not a good deal.

Bet you knew that IBF #5 featherweight Fahprakorb Rakkiatgym (46-3) got a second round KO over Alwyn Clerino (10-2) of the Philippines in Pattaya recently. Heck how come no one tells me that stuff? Bummer! Next? Rakkiartgymn will get a March date with Bobby Pacquaio (21-10). Yes, Bobby is the Brother of Manny and has been in some dodgy fights. In 2002, he fought Baby Lorona Jr. for the Philippine Super Feather title. The judges gave him a UD (116-112, 117-111, 116-112). Veteran ref-judge sitting at ringside Cousin Bruce McTavish and third man in the ring Gene Del Bianco (USA) said “Lorona” won. They met again in March of ’03 with Lorona getting a 7th round KO. Think the name Pacquaio had anything to do with the record? Naaaw!

How far has the heavyweight division fallen? Off a cliff like the all but forgotten “Cliff Divers of Mexico.” Vitali Klitschko and Danny Williams did less than 120,000 pay-per-view buys. The November 13 big deal heavyweight extravaganza from Madison Square Garden did about the same. The PPV company was cable giant HBO. “We’re disappointed,” said Ross Greenburg, President, HBO Sports.

“We realize that the heavyweight division needs to be re-energized in 2005. Boxing needs a unified heavyweight champion to emerge and be recognized by the public as ‘The Man.” Dah!

Lest you wondered what became of former WBO Heavy Champ Corrie Sanders, I can report that he KO’d Ruski Alexei (21-13-2) in 2 cantos. Sanders had the Ruskie down four times before the stoppage. Next up is a fight against TBA on January 15 in Germany. True fact! For my Pal that loves “The Imperial One”, Lennox Lewis, there are sounds coming out of his mouth that would lead one to believe that he’ll make comeback in the ring. “These kinds of fights (Klitschko-Williams) do tempt me to think about coming back because when I see the weaknesses Vitali has, I know I can beat him. I felt like jumping in the ring and saying ‘Danny, sit down mate, let me sort this out for you. Let me show you how it’s done’. I’m nine months away from being fighting fit and watching the fight unfold last night stirred something inside me. It showed Klitschko’s vulnerability.” Please come back Lennox an adoring public pleads.

Good news for the Guys and Gals from the Land Down Under. They got a world champion when Victor Darchinyan (21-0) fighting with amazing alacrity KO’d Irene Pacheco (30-1) in the 11th round to annex the IBF Feather title. Yes he did. Toss a shrimp on the Barbie mate. Meanwhile in Los Angeles California Antonio Tarver (22-3) went shopping for a win against Glen Johnson (42-9-2) only to come up with the preverbal “lump of coal.” Over 12, sometimes very entertaining rounds, Glencoffe Johnson out worked, out hustled and out hearted Tarver to win a split decision (112-116, and 115-113 twice). As Tarver’s WBC belt “technically” wasn’t on the line I guess he’s still the champ.

If you’re going to rush out this day for a spot of last minute shopping besides a few stops to see old friends (and young ones that walk to music) might I suggest you treat yourself to a tickets to the “Battle at the Beach” on December 28th? It promises to be a “wham bam slam dunk’em” evening of fun, frolic and fighting. While my information doesn’t include the information I would bet that maybe, there will even be some amber pleasure enrichment fluid available. Specifically this year’s event will be held at Mike Shopping Mall on the 10th floor. There will be 10 professional fights with 9 of those reserved for Thai style contests. Engaging in those Thai fights are 8 Imports from Europe. The one “International “ fight will feature “upcoming prospect German lightweight Champion Mirko Wolf 7-0-2(4) against TBA.” The members of the TBA family do get around. The referee for the main event is none other that Patrick ‘The Fighting Flying Frog’, aka Patrick Van den Berghe.

The Thai style main even will feature the champion from Rajadamnern Stadium and the Champion from Lumpini Stadium. I know right now the wheels are turning as you say to yourself, “How can I get Teelock to give me a ticket for this battle at the Beach.” No problem! Just take down the following information and place copy’s in all strategic locations where Teelock may look. That is anywhere food is stored, in your pocket with any loose baht or under the mattress where at one time you foolishly left former Teelock’s phone number. Do not place among dirty cloths, dishes or where dust might settle. If you buy your ticket before the event the cost is 1,200 baht, the day of the event 1,500 baht and a VIP table of 4 can be purchased for only 2,500 baht which includes International food. “Where or where can tickets be obtained?” Call Pieter at 06 300 0116 or Patrick at 01 687 2410. There are also tickets available at Patrick’s Belgian Restaurant, opposite Mike Shopping Mall.

And “Oh-By-The-Way” if you happen to drop by Patrick’s Belgian Restaurant for fight tickets either today or tomorrow why not treat the “Little Lady” to a sumptuous repast called “Christmas Eve/Day Sumptuous Repast Dinner?” How’s this for a menu? Start out with a little Mousse van Garnalen, then a nice Kippen soep met citroen and for the Hoofdgerecht Eenden borst in Porto saus, met warme gemengde groentjes en aardappel kroketten and finally ice cream “met verse Aardbeien” Yum, Yum sign me up.

“T’was the day before Christmas and all through the beach a myriad of presents were set within reach

Farangs by the dozens were out there looking

For that one special present that might get their Teelock a cooking

What were the chances that this year for sure

For Teelock’s pouting a present would cure?

With chances like little, slim and then none

Nevertheless the shopping had to be done

We looked at the TQ, Tim’s and Las Vegas

Never finding the gift that would give us the aegis

Arriving at home a tab bit unstable

We sit in the kitchen our arms on the table “Oh what have I done ? No presents I got”

“Oh but I’m silly, I’ll just give her baht”

That about does it, not much to say but Merry Christmas to all and to all a Good Day!

An A.G.M. run in December?

PH3 - Run 1084

Never before has this happened. The reason? Our Grand Master, Charlie Manson is fleeing the scene, and taking up residence in China. So wishing to go out with a bang, not a wimper, Charlie M. and Poncho the Pervert were this week’s hares.

The A-site was just off the Siam country Club road. A good turnout, which I suspect, was due to the fact, that many people had heard the rumour that our GM was actually going to hand over the reins of the hash.

The hares explained that it was a “Live Hare Run.” This meant they needed a ten-minute start on the pack and hopefully lay paper on the run and also to manage to stay ahead.

During the ensuing ten minutes standby period, new shoes were given down downs, jokes were told. Spaghetti Head and Oddjob were the official timekeepers. Chicken F., who was running the circle, bowed to pressure from the crowd, decided to let us start after nine minutes. Well as we all know, Charlie M. is a Short Cutting B***tard anyway.

Off we went. Through housing, along tracks, down roads, alongside the reservoir. Always thinking we would catch the hares. It was not to be. How the heck did they manage it? Maybe they were using a motorbike. We will never know.

The hares had informed us before the run, that it could be walked in fifty minutes. Well I ran the whole way, and it took me one hour and ten minutes. I did not see too many pass me, and thought I would be one of the first in. No way. There were plenty back already, and by the sounds of merriment coming from the beer truck, they had been back for quite a time.

After a cooling down period, the circle was called to order. Today the Pattaya Hash had its 75,000th runner. When we signed up we are given a numbered ticket. So a raffle was drawn for this honour and prize. Charlie Manson won it. Plenty of cries of “fix!” “Bullsh*t!”-”No way!” All to no avail.

It is at this point that I will let you see the letter the Pattaya Hash dispatched to the Chinese Embassy:

“Dear Mr. Ambassador of the Democratic Republic of China,

This is a warning letter from the Pattaya Hash. We are not sure if you are aware of all border movements, but a certain Charlie Manson is moving into your territory. Whereby, the Pattaya Hash is ecstatic to see him moving on, we are concerned that other countries, their agencies and hashes are not prepared for what might happen from this incursion.

You have been duelly warned.”

So CM retains the honour of being the 75,000th runner.

Sunflower then ran the raffle. She promptly iced the GM and gave away plenty prizes.

Sir Airhead iced “Old Timers” Uncle Pervy, The Pope, Golden Dildo, Festering Streaker and Whale D*ck S##er for talking. Arseholeo iced, and given Hash S**t, for claiming he saw the hares on motorbikes, laying the run. W@#king iced for adding pink shorts to the Hash Rags stockpile.

Well done Hopalong, who received his 50th run mug!

Steamy Lump then gave us some religion. As usual he targeted Wet Spot who just cannot seem to outwit “The Bullsh*t Meter.” Youth F**^er, Karumba, Baby’s Arm all cooled their cheeks for being friends of Arseholeo.

Charlie . then brought in all the Mismanagement and sat them on the ice. This was quite a spectacle, as the stunning Sunflower leapt up in air claiming sexual harassment, which I would love to be a party to. It was decreed they had all done a good job for the last year. Then it was announced. “The new Grand Master would be, Flying Frog!”

Cheers all round. I know more things happened, but my memory was Chang confused, and my notes are undecipherable. Chicken F**^er serenaded Flying Frog with a new song, but after that I lose it.

Another Hash survived.

Thank you Classroom 2 for another great happy hour. Fantastic food and fabulous girls.

The King is dead.

Long live the King. (No not you Elvis!).

On On,
General Kidney Wiper
