Another Vintage Year In the Pattaya Am-Am
The Pattaya Am-Am
March 4
Phoenix
This years Am-Am was played at Phoenix Golf & Country
Club, which arguably is in the best condition for golf in comparison with
all the surrounding courses in the area. The condition helped to ensure a
very competitive result, that although not as good as 2004 in scoring terms,
was nevertheless a much closer affair with the winners, runners up and third
place being separated by just one point each.
The
winning team of Rick Bevington, Doug Campbell, Graham Hiskett and Al Rolnik
were surprised to take home this year’s Pattaya Am-Am title.
The Am-Am is played under the same format as a Pro-Am but
with all of the team being amateurs. The objective is for two players to
score stableford points on each hole to make an aggregate against a par of
72 points. The maximum handicap allowed was three quarters with a maximum
handicap for each player of eighteen shots.
Stephen
Beard (far left) and Richard Livinston (far right) flank the runner’s up
team of Robert Sellick, Gavin Knox, Mark Heffenden and Paul Withall.
A closer examination showed that the top two teams were
very much in form as the winning team also had two nearest the pin prizes
whilst the runners up provided the winner of division 1 and division 3 in
the long drive competition. The 3rd place team relied on a very steady
return by their four low handicap players in Mike Dolby, Phil Mitchell, Dave
Mascari and Simon Philbrook, who combined for a very creditable score of 85
points, 13 under par without giving up a single point to the course over the
eighteen holes and slotting in 13 birdies.
Second place was taken by the team of Robert Sellick,
Gavin Knox, Mark Heffenden and Paul Withall, who totaled 86 points with some
prodigious hitting off the tees, all the way round the course and some very
steady golf in between to just miss out on the top honours by a single
point.
The winners Rick Bevington, Doug Campbell, Graham Hiskett
and Al Rolnik, surprised everyone, including themselves, having been put
together as very much a scratch side that went out to enjoy the day with
little expectation of being in the overall team prizes. In the event, some
very accurate iron shots resulted in two near pins and the 2005 Am-Am
winners trophy for a team that showed the value of not being under pressure
from undue expectations and cool heads over the closing holes to close out
the competition by a single stroke and finish 15 under par. Doug Campbell
was particularly pleased with his own efforts in the final result, as he had
been suffering for some time to play to his handicap, as indeed had the rest
of the team.
The day was somewhat marred by the appearance of rain
which had not been seen on the golf courses for over three months, but it
did not really affect the majority of the players as it lasted only a short
time and occurred only twice, and in some cases helped in reducing the heat
that had been building up from the outset of play.
3rd
place team Mike Dolby, Phil Mitchell, Dave Mascari and Simon Philbrook with
Stephen and Richard at the Haven following the 2005 Am-Am.
A far more important factor and one, both applauded and
condemned (by those affected most), was the introduction in the rules of the
stipulation that all players would play from the same tees. This meant that
all the ladies in the event had to play from the white tees with the benefit
of an additional three shots after the calculation of the three quarters
handicap allowance. This new ruling totally negated the advantage of having
a lady in the team who no longer had the huge advantage of playing from the
red tees and the subsequent addition of several hundred yards.
As usual the course was presented in absolute first class
condition with the greens being particularly excellent and the fairways as
good as any in the area. The only slight niggle, that the slightly wayward
players had, was an overabundance of sand in the bunkers where competitors
found it difficult not to sink so deep into the sand so as to fill their
shoes each time they played a bunker shot.
In the absence of Stephen Beard, still recovering from
last year’s health problems, Roy Thornton stepped in to head up the
organisation and check-in. He was assisted as usual by Richard Livingston,
the resident PGA Professional, in both the check in and scoring.
Back at The Haven, the prizes were presented by Stephen
assisted as usual by Richard. The food provided by Lumyai and her
outstanding staff, was once again very tasty and available in large
quantities until all were well sated and satisfied.
Prior to the prize giving a new attraction was the music
provided by Conny on Double Bass, Hans on the Drums and Don Scott, the
internationally acclaimed guitarist from the USA. One was reminded of the
old brides admonition of, something old something new, something borrowed
something blue, as for the first time the grey haired Don lead the group,
playing the Blues on an old Fender “Strato” borrowed from Phil Groves
for the occasion.
The vast majority of the contestants stayed well into the
night celebrating another great day of golf and entertainment and just
enjoying the comaderie and the excellent atmosphere at The Haven.

3rd D Flight: Betty Koehler, 33 pts
Near Pins: #13 John Emmerson; #16 Brian Holden
Lewis Szigligeti, one of the gang from the Peninsula Golf
and Social Club, of Western Oz, left the extreme city by the sea with a bang
as his D Flight 44 points on the Sunday shortened Green Valley outdistanced
the field by 6 points! Lewis will be missed, not only because he and his
mates were a grand addition to the Society but also because this scribe had
just mastered the spelling of his name (don’t quiz me on it though!). Jim
Bell, another Australian who is making his annual visit with his gang from
around the world, came a modest second in the junior Flight, with Betty
Koehler showing good perseverance to win loot with 33 points.
Skipping around a bit, Frankie “The Pilk”, improving
week by week, showed that he is more than capable of playing to his new
handicap as he swept away his fellow B Flight competitors with 39 points,
edging the ol’ Donkey and Capt Fogg and fast improving Paul Shaw as he did
so. The Good Capt. put a devilish count back on Mr. Shaw which left him
without a podium step.
Spot the Dog was the top ...dog...in C Flight. Ken
Kutzing’s point total was more than double the number of clubs he had in
his bag and that was enough to edge, on count back, another of the
omnipresent Sugar Shack boys, Mike Seely.
And in the premier Flight, traveling minstrel Donny
Scott, showed he could play a sack of clubs as well, as his 38 points held
the day. Brian Holden’s even to handicap effort edged Jim Brackett and Ian
Ashenden, with the local teaching pro losing out on count back.

The gang was coming off a tough week of competition in
the Lewiinski’s Open, and the usually diabolical Silver Back decided to
give them a breather with a four man scramble. That, of course, is the
format where each person in the fourball hits a drive. The team selects the
best drive, and then each of the team hits from there, and repeats that
through the hole. Each team member must contribute three drives. The team
handicap is one-tenth of their total, with no team handicap being in excess
of the lowest handicap in the group. To no one’s surprise the tough team
of Sharp, Mooneyham, Brackett and Plunkett took the day. They were closely
followed by the Flying Sienkiewitz’s, accompanied by Wilkinson and
Robinson. The GM’s lot of Collis, Ingham and Reading swept up the
leftovers.

Putting the exclamation mark on a great visit of golf,
Chris Sanders shot 42 to edge Philippines’ resident Gary Wilborn and the
president’s brother, David. The arrival of David brings to the number of
Mascari’s in Pattaya to an all-time high of three, with the Patriarch,
Charlie, leading the golfing trinity. Jim Bell stepped on the podium for the
second time in the week, this time on the top step, as his 37 points edged
the joint 36 points of Harvey Samuel and Kenny “K4” Kutzing. Harvey
prevailed on the count back.

2nd B Flight: Ken Kutzing, 38 pts
3rd B Flight: Mike Craighead, 38 pts
What’s with this getaway day thing? For the third time
on the week a competitor cashed on his last round. Each of the players had a
well-seasoned handicap, and, as we all know, it is really a case of finally
acclimating and then, it is time to go. Golf is cruel! Vic Hester joined
Chris Sanders and Lewis Szigligeti, performing that feat on the week, as his
38 points were a count back better than Johnny Hillier’s. The wizened old
teaching pro Ian tidied up the last of the A Flight loot. But the man of the
match, ahh...woman of the match, was Tik Mayer who came into town with her
handicap sheet reflecting a three stroke reduction from her existing IPGC
handicap. She still amassed 42 points off the reduced handicap. Watch out,
this pretty gal is on the improve! K4 and The Mechanic escorted the Queen of
the Day to her coronation atop the B Flight podium.
Changing face of golf at The Haven
Few will remember our host Stephen Beard
setting out on the Pattaya golf trail some 10 years ago with regular
friendly golf from The Wild Chicken, more will remember the move to “the
world famous” Hare House and Stephen’s concept of TAGGS (The Alternative
Gentleman’s Golf Society) playing competitions twice a week, Wednesdays
and Fridays (Monday golf was not introduced until 2000), presenting the now
famous “knotted putter” trophy to the winners and Fobe golf shirts to
the runners up! With the tradition of the winner “ringing the bell” to
buy a drink for all his fellow competitors who attended the presentation. A
format that really was a “Stephen” masterpiece designed to promote
competitive golf and a great social atmosphere, which has prevailed through
to recent times at The Haven.
Sadly, due to Stephen’s serious illness last year, the
golf shirts finally “ran out” and so cash prizes were introduced in
their place. No doubt some will have mourned the demise of the infamous
shirts whilst some will have jumped for joy, certainly some villages in
Thailand will never be the same again, as no longer will TAGGS shirts be
seen in the fields and on building sites.
This week, Stephen requested a “show of hands” on the
continued future of the famous “knotted putter” trophy and by a large
majority it was voted to dump the trophy and increase the winner’s cash
prize. Some will mourn the loss of the trophy and it’s prestige, other’s
are rubbing their greedy hands together at the prospect of more money and no
doubt wives, girlfriends and room maids will be delighted there are no more
infernal “putters” to dust! Finally, a word of warning to any would be
“sandbaggers” reading this news, the age old tradition of “ringing the
bell” will continue!

Another surprisingly large turnout of masochists to
battle it out on the “concrete jungle” though some “regulars” and
even a couple of Siam members gave it a miss. As it was, an effort had been
made to water the fairways but with the ground so hard it just resulted in
puddles of water for golfer’s to negotiate. Scores in division 1 were
tight and it was perhaps fitting that Guy should take the honours after
being the “bridesmaid” so often. He shot a superb 73 gross to narrowly
defeat Rick on countback, but congratulations to Rick for his super 80
gross, a fine day’s golf. In division 2, Barry cantered home with a very
creditable net 73, whilst wife Trudie once again won the Ladies with an
excellent net 71. A good day’s work for the Chadbourn family! In the 2s
competition, the pool was shared by Roar Berger, Jeff McLaury, Al Rolnik,
Claus Nielsen and Kirsten Larsen. Prior to the prize giving, Richard
Livingston, the resident PGA professional, welcomed back Bruce Horne, Alan
Venner, Rick Schramm, Glyn Nicholas and Paul Simpson before bidding farewell

2nd Bryan Edwards, 35 pts - c/b 19
3rd Brian Kelly, 31 pts
As usual, a large turnout for the ever popular Century
layout (what is it about Ban Chang) the course was in the condition we come
to expect and there were some tasty scores in division 1, where Paul managed
to equal his personal best for the third time and hold off the usual strong
challenge from the two Michaels. We know that Century is Michael Dige’s
favourite course but we didn’t know he had taken up residency! Found
sleeping in the rafters of the “starters hut”, Judging by the scores in
division 2, it was a bit of a struggle with Roar just beating Bryan on
countback and an amazed Brian grabbing 3rd spot on countback from Barry
Chadbourn on 31 points! For the 2s competition, a new format. From today the
pool will be in two divisions, this should encourage the higher handicappers
who do not generally get too many so we should see a few more exciting
rollovers! The lucky sharpshooters were Michael Dige & Bob Lindborg in
Division 1 and Brian Kelly & Peter Johansson (2) in Division 2. Back at
the Haven, Richard Livingston welcomed Phil Boghurst & Ben Irwin before
saying farewell to David Brennan.
Dave Cutler takes out the 2004 Series
Pattaya Bridge Club
Dave Cutler from England tallied the most points over
the past year to take out Pattaya Bridge Club’s 2004 series. In a
presentation at the Diana Inn on Monday afternoon, Sophin Thappajug Diana
Group managing director and Peter Malhotra from Pattaya Mail handed over
the first prize to Dave Cutler in a small ceremony. Pattaya
Bridge series champ Dave Cutler (2nd left) receives his trophy from Peter
Malhotra (2nd right), Sophin Thappajug (right) and Philip Morris (left) one
of the series organisers at the Diana Inn last Monday.
The Bridge Series has been held twice a week for all
2004 and has had more than 200 participants from 21 countries including all
the major European countries, US, South Africa, Hong Kong. Many people are
on short holidays and of course many are long time local expats. In the
high season we have had 10-14 tables of 4 players whereas the low season
the participants are down to 4-5 tables. Every week, administrator Terry
Quested makes a newsletter with bridge questions, advices and of course
results.
In the club “Contract Bridge” is played meaning that
every pair plays against every other using the same “hands”. Thus luck
does not really count and skill will always prevail.
Bridge has also turned into a tourist resource. Group
tours are now being arranged with the only purpose of playing bridge.
Recently such groups from Sweden and Norway stayed in Welcome in and
Mermaid hotels in Jomtien Beach, staying for more than a week and playing
Bridge every day. Some of them find time to visit the Pattaya Bridge Club
in between the sessions.
The Friday session of the Pattaya Bridge Club is under
the umbrella of the Pattaya International Ladies Club (PILC). There are
some 5-7 ladies on a good day, but hope that more ladies will find time to
visit.
All Bridge players are welcome to the regular bridge
sessions on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 1 p.m. at the Diana Inn,
Pattaya Second road between Soi 11 and 12. Show up some 15 minutes before,
as a couple or alone. The director will always find a partner for you. He
is the balancing player, so if you are lucky you will play with him.
Beginners are welcome to contact the administrator Terry Quested and get
advice how to learn the game.
Results for entire 2004 series: 1) Dave Cutler, England;
2) Charles Paparigian, USA; 3) Clive Bell, Scotland.

Kris
Helgasson
The course on the day was in very good condition, putting
to shame the courses closer to Pattaya. Course ‘Services and Prices’
were as usual, exceptional. The weather was balmy with a pleasant
temperature.
Big Aussie, Jeff Wylie, took the A Flight as usual, with
40 points. Gery Wedl was in second place with 37 points, beating Bill Plath,
in third, on countback. In fourth was Kuni Wakabayashi with 35 points.
The oft-injured Icelander, Kris Helgasson, ‘Finally

39 points, with a countback for third and fourth on 36 points, won by Arthur
Bailey with Patrick Browne in fourth.

Thursday March 3 Bangpra Stableford
A fine course, such as this is, brings the players in
well ahead of time, and with the lists full we were able to book additional
tee times. It has to be said It was with some surprise we were able to book
extra tee times, one always puts Bangpra into the booked up category, and
even when we got there the course was surprisingly quiet.
Bill
Plath
So it was that standing on the first tee, with a stream
of players widely dispersed about the Bangpra clubhouse, we were told we
could start on two tees. Now whilst this would have been a ‘God Send’ an
hour or so previously, it did mean we could all start on the first tee in
peace and quiet.
So to the course, and it was the first time I had played
it since before the ‘High Season’, and I have to admit to being sad at
the way it appears to have deteriorated. The fairways were not too bad, but
the bunkers were not raked and uneven, and the greens were slow, for Bangpra
that is. We were also visited by a large troupe of unfriendly monkeys, the
male of which was quite aggressive. Seems the passing of the high season has
left them quite hungry, and angry, and finding bags only held golf items did
not help. Still, one good thing about golf is you usually have a club in
your hand.
Henk
De Bock
Still the day passed quietly and it was not long before
we could sit in their Restaurant and partake of their fine food. I have to
say that their Rainbow Ice cream is the best at any course.
On the day we had some fine scores, and in the A Flight
the results were decided by one score. The winner of the A Flight was Bill
Plath with 39 points. We then had a three way countback on 38 points for the
minor positions. In second was Barry Kerr, still playing in A Flight, in
Third was Ebrahim and in fourth was Brian Noguer.
In the B Flight we had one of those rounds that seem to
pop up now and again. Henk De Bock ran away with it with 47 points, his
round of the year, ahead of another fine round, with Bob Rasmussen in second
with 41 points. Then we had another one of those countbacks on 38 points. In
third was Cees Bosman and in fourth was Patrick Browne.

The Coral Reef Boys Head For The Highlands!
Sunday, February 27 was the date and
Soi Dao, about a 3 hour drive from Pattaya out towards the Cambodian border,
was the venue for the annual Coral Reef Spring Tankard. At around 9 a.m. a
motley crew of 15 headed east. As usual, the course was in lovely condition
although a little dry.
Jez
Lees receiving the trophy from the lovely Kwan.
The format for the first day was Stableford and the first
4 ball teed off in bright sunshine under a clear blue sky heading into a
stiff breeze coming straight up the first fairway. Lovely conditions for
golf, which certainly found favour with Jez Lees as he carded a creditable
36 points to lift the trophy, a very popular winner! Second place went to
Tony Stevens with 35 points and third to Gary Turner with 32 points.
The evening presentation was followed by cheese and wine
(not sure of the vintage but after 3 gallons no one really cared!) then off
to bed in preparation for the following days team event. This was played in
teams of three, again Stableford format, with the best two scores counting
per hole. Conditions on the course were very similar to the day before
although the condition of the players left quite a lot to be desired!
So, somewhat bleary eyed and hungover, the intrepid
players once again headed out into the field. Again, a glorious day for
golfing and it saw “O’D’s Dynamos” comprising Steve “O.B.” O’
Donoghue, Clive Bruce and Tony Stevens take the honours with a massive score
of 80 points - helped greatly by Tony with a personal score of 45! Second
place went to “Massives’ Marauders” featuring Paul “Massive”
Ashurst, Gary “DJ” Turner and Nev Hethershaw with 70 points and in third
place was “Thommos’ Tossers” who were Paul Thompson, Jez Lees and Mark
Bonner with 67 points.
Good golfing, good conditions and excellent company. Thanks again to all
who participated and made it the success it was.
PSC golf from the Three Sisters Bar
It was a close call as four golfers were
tied at 37 points at the end of the day. Both Herb Ishinaga and Don
Ratcliffe tore up the front nine but died on the back. Herb had 22 points on
the front and Don had an incredible 23 points accumulated by the turn. As
they rounded the corner their legs buckled as Herb slipped in with 15 points
and Don with 14. On the 18th, Herb went over the green in three, chipped on
and three putted to lose the day.
Paul
Donahue (left) holding the bag again this week with this week’s winner,
Don Ratcliffe.
Joe St. Laurent and Dene Mundy also came in with 37
points. Joe had a miserable front nine coming in with 16 points but stormed
back with 21 points to win the day. Dene was the most steady as he scored 19
points on the front and 18 on the back.
Again holding the bag was Paul Donahue with 21 points. Although his game
is coming up, Tully and others have also improved their game. Other likely
contenders for the cellar have not played in the last few competitions
leaving Paul high a dry. The closest to Paul was Terry Curtis with 25
points, well clear of the cellar. Paul is hoping that help will be on the
way next week to help hauling the bag around for a week.
John Hughes claims
“Golfer of the Month”
PSC golf with The Bunker
Burapha Golf Club
On Monday, 28 February the competition for the “Golfer
of the Month” came down to John Hughes and Brian Bellis. John had a slim 3
point lead when they were pair together to battle it out. John Hughes held
his nerves and came home with the victory. The competition was a medal play
using the A & B courses and white tees. Terry Gill who netted a 66 won
division “A”. Second came John Hughes with 68 and Third was shared by
John King, P.J. Redmond and Brian Walker. The best scores came from division
“B” where Binni Josteinsson and Glen Reaume both shot a 64 to share
first prize. In third place came Jan Von Spellen with 67 net. Near the pins
were won by Binni Josteinsson, Mick Ramshaw and Brian Walker.
John
Hughes is all smiles when he received the “Golfer of the Month” award
for February 2005.
Phoenix Golf and Country Club
On March 2, the Phoenix Country Club was once again in
superb condition for the boys from the Bunker who played a stableford
competition. In division “A” John King returned to form and scored 38
points to win. Second place went to George Redgewell, one shot behind with
37 and third place was Jan Von Spellen with 34 points. In division “B”
Curtis Hessler was the winner with 38 points. Second came Glen Reaume, Jim
Wooler and Thea Von Spellen all with 34 Stableford points. Near the pins
were won by Jan Von Spellen, Thea Von Spellen and Granville Swanton.
Royal Thai Navy Golf Course
The week ended on a cool, overcast day with a few rain
showers. The play was a medal competition at the Navy’s North and West
courses. In division “A” David Johnson was the only player to make par
with a net 72 to take first place. Second place went to Hakan Widestead with
73 net. In division “B” First place winner was Dougie Landsborough (his
first time to win) with net 74, runner up was Thea Von Spellen with a 75 and
third came Glen Reaume with 76 net. Near the pins were won by Hakan
Widestead, Geoff Parker, Bryan Rought and P.J. Redmond
The Bunker Boys are playing three times a week during the high season,
(Monday’s, Wednesday’s and Friday’s) so if you would like a round of
golf, call into the Bunker Bar on Soi Chaiyapoon (near X-zyte disco and
across the street from Tony’s Disco II) to pick up a golf schedule or
consult the Pattaya Mail every week.
Bill & Ben come out
to play at Ban Chang
IPGC Bunker Boys from the OK Corral
The Bunker Boys’ road show from the OK Corral went to
Century Ban Chang for their weekly medal event on Tuesday, March 1, on a
very hot day. The course was parched but playing conditions were propitious
for a good day’s golf. The field was divided at sixteen and under and both
flights acquitted themselves well with the average score being net 76. In
division two Barry Pethig and Les Hall found themselves in the spotlight
again with fine net 73s. It is left to conjecture what Barry’s score may
have been if a dog had not run away with his ball on one hole! Three shots
ahead of the pair was Ben Findon, whose net 70 was a fine reward for this
keen golfer. Division one saw a tighter contest with John Cunningham and
Nile Sheehan sharing third place with net 71. Only one shot ahead was Chris
Saunders but lording it at the top of the leader board with net 69, was the
canny Yorkshireman Bill Hewitt. Wilf Latham and Ben Findon shared the
“twos” pot. For those of us old enough to remember “Watch with
Mother” on BBC television in the fifties the day brought back memories of
two mischievous Flowerpot Men, Bill and Ben and their minder, Little Weed.
Mr. Loy fulfilled the latter role well on the day announcing the Bananas
winner as Tony Duthie, who played three off the tee thrice and five off the
tee once in an appalling round, only two days before his return to UK. But
the star of the day? Was it Bill or was it Ben? It was Bill!
Frances Dons the Crown at
Chonburi
On Thursday, March 3, golfers from the OK Corral took the
infamous route 331 to the beautiful and relatively ignored course at Century
Chonburi. This is an absolute bonus because, during the high season, the
course still has the room and time to welcome golf groups and offer them a
magnificent deal for competitions over its well-planned and challenging
holes. With the field cut at seventeen and under the second flight enjoyed a
tightly fought joust with Peter Fitton and Harry Cowling tying for third
with their stableford scores of 33 points, only one behind Ken Graham, who
had been all at sea at the sister course at Ban Chang two days previously.
Taking the flight’s top place was Sunny Khanna, soon to return to UK, with
a deserved level-par round of 36 points. The top flight witnessed the better
golf with Wilf Latham smiling and joking his way to a creditable 35 points
and third place. Keith Hector, so often in the frame these days, took second
place with his 37 points, only to be pipped for the main honours by Don
Frances. Don is a good golfer who often is beset by bad luck but today
everything held for him and his 38 points gave him his first win for many a
long day. No doubt his birdie two on the fourth hole helped and the Super
Sawng pot was also shared by Wilf Latham and Bill Hewitt. OK regular, Steve
Nowell, is either “hot” or “not” these days. As a result he
occasionally struggles under the weight of his 9 handicap and today was no
exception and Mr. Loy took great pleasure in awarding him the Banana Booby
for his low score of 24 points. It had been a good day for all, but for Don
Frances, a win to cherish.
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s Beach Bar
Tuesday March 1 Khao
Kheow C.C. Stableford
Tuesday morning solves the question of having to cook your
own breakfast. Mind, you have to be able to play golf, no I will change that to,
you have to be able to get around 18 holes on a golf course without making too
much of a fool of yourself.
Winners and
runners up with Bert (center)
So with a full tummy, and a comfortable trip down there, it
is suddenly time to attack one of the toughest courses around here. When you are
changed and the knees stop trembling you can tee off on the first. Easy hole A1,
the last you will see for some time, mind the view is great, and the water holes
at least allow you to change your ball.
K.K. is at least a well kept course, despite the water
shortage, so you can amble around and at least enjoy yourself. As for the
scores, well on this day we had the Ladies playing, and so the sky was the
limit.
Back in the clubhouse as the cards came in, it was obvious
that as usual the course would not be beaten by many and certainly not in the A
Div, however we had a couple of Ladies in the B Flight who decided to show the
men how to do it.
Back at Bert’s, after one of his fine after golf free fill
ups, the scores on the doors were declared by our Bob. The winner in the A Div
was Hamilton Wilson, with our own Bill Knight close behind in second. In the B
Flight the Ladies ran ‘Rampant’, and Laurine Brinn won easily, with Jenny
O’ Donnel not far behind. Suffice to say both Ladies beat 40 points, a score
unknown at K.K. in recent history. Still once again K.K. 26 - PSC 2. Nice one
Ladies. T.T.F.N.
Winner Division 1: Hamilton Wilson; Second Bill Knight
Division 2: Laurine Brinn, Second Jenny O’ Donnell
Near Pins: John Mills, Fergus Brennan, Mike Winfield, Joop
Jasperre, Laurinne Brinn, Bob Lawrence, Colin Bavington Andy Evans, Richard
Tathington and Martin Bullen.

One thing you can always say about “Iron” Mike
Tyson is that he’s interesting. You may not like what he does but he’s
never dull. Grantlee Kieza, a writer for the Daily Telegraph (Australia),
is exclusively reporting that Australian great Jeff Fenech will be Tyson
next trainer. To go through the list of those that have tried to get Tyson
on the straight and narrow would be a veritable “Who’s Who of Boxing
Trainers.” There’s Kevin Rooney, Teddy Atlas and Freddie Roach to name
but three. One of the problems with Tyson, besides being Tyson, is that he
has an eye for the ladies. When in or out of training he likes to visit
places where “lady’s walk to music.”
Fenech must then feel like Mr. Phelps of Mission
Impossible with a task at hand. In addition to getting Danny Green ready
for his March 12 fight with Markus Beyer and promoting IBF Flyweight Champ
Vic Darchinyan first title defense on March 27, Fenech now has to get the
39-year-old Tyson back in fighting trim. Mr. Kieza reports, “Fenech has
been putting Tyson through a gruelling fitness regime in Los Angeles all
week. Mike has been running on the treadmill in the hotel gym but we have
been going upstairs and moving the furniture around in my room and going
through punches in private,” Fenech said. No to Fenech! The last time
Tyson was in a hotel room and move furniture he punched out British
promoter Frank Maloney. “Mike wants me to help him get ready for a
comeback fight in Washington DC in June 20.” (That fight might be
against Australian heavyweight Bob Mirovic (25-13). That is if Mirovic
gets by Timo Hoffman tomorrow night. Both fighters were KO’d by
“Flash” Danny Williams.) “He is still one of the most devastating
fighters in the world and if he trains properly he will crush Vitali
Klitschko and John Ruiz who hold the heavyweight titles these days. I
believe Mike has a new mindset and that he is focused on regaining his
place at the top of boxing.” If the task ahead weren’t difficult
enough for Fenech, he’s going to train Tyson in Thailand. Watch out Land
of Smiles and Good Luck Jeff. If Fenech pulls this off, “He be the
man!”
Tyson had planned on “maybe” fighting in Aussie
Land. Not going to happen. The acting immigration minister (guess they
couldn’t get a real one) Peter McGauran doesn’t think much of Tyson
being allowed in the country, “The immigration department had a video
tape of an interview Tyson gave in 2003 when he denounced Desiree
Washington - whom he was convicted of raping - and said he wanted to rape
her and her mother. Tyson described Washington as “just a lying,
reptilian, monstrous young lady.” McGauran discounted the “Affair de
Holyfield” by saying, “that Holyfield incident was 1997 but only 18
months ago he claimed on national television that he was innocent of the
rape of that Desiree Washington back in 1992 for which he served three
years, but he now wished he’d raped both her and her mother. Now
that’s got to go to the protection and safety of the Australian
community. What we can say is that in the past, people seeking to come to
Australia with serious criminal convictions have been denied entry on
character grounds.” Of course if you’re born in the Land of Aussie and
have character flaws that’s OK.
Good guy Clinton Woods (36-3-1) finally got his world
championship last Friday night when he stopped previously undefeated Rico
Hoye (18-1) for the IBF (Means “I Been Fixin”) in round 5. The results
were never in doubt as it was a case of when not if. The fight held at the
Magna Centre in Rotherham England culminated a journey that stated in
September of 2002 with a loss via a TKO to Roy Jones jr. in Portland,
Oregon USA. Then came two shots against Glencoffe Johnson in Merry Old
England. The first contest was a draw which the Johnson camp said was more
like “Highway Robbery”, (“200 Baht for Lady Drink? That’s
“Highway Robbery”) The rematch last February with Johnson was all
Johnson as he won a UD (116-112, 115-113, 115-113). Regardless, now
Clinton Woods can claim to being the IBF world champion. Next? Maybe Paul
Briggs?
Meanwhile, “At the Oasis, the Arabs were eating their
dates” and WBC Super Middle Champ Danny Green was getting ready for his
March 12 rematch with Marcus Beyer in the land of sauerkraut, beer, brats
and bodacious Ta’s Ta’s. If you’ve been following the lead up,
you’ll remember that in their first meeting Green got the short shift
when the referee stopped the fight. I mistakenly wrote that it was a
“German referee, saving a German fighter in front of the home goose
stepping crowd.” Whoops I was wrong. The referee in fact was a Yank
named Bill Clancy. Please take note. Green had Beyer is trouble the entire
5 rounds dumping him on the canvas a couple of times. One would think that
Green would be predicting a KO this time around. Wrong. “I genuinely
believe this fight is going twelve rounds. People say “You’ve got to
knock him out to win in Germany,” well that’s unfair and I think
it’s a silly thing to say. Because if I win the fight convincingly then
I think the WBC’s honor is on the line here. T hey realize that before,
a mistake was made in the decision and the WBC have given the go ahead for
the rematch. The whole world is watching this fight and I think whoever
deserves to win is going to win and there’s not going to be any rough
decision just because it is in Germany. There’s a lot of pressure on the
WBC and the judges and the referee to do the right thing.” Hope
Green’s correct but to believe in WBC honor is like waiting up for
father Christmas when you’re 35. Beyer for his part is his usual pain in
the ass. “I only hope he remains fair this time.” Yea, Markus Green
cheated last time by kicking your butt.
As Manny Pacquiao (39-2-2) gets ready for his Las Vegas showdown at the
MGM Gand with Erik Morales (47-2) a week next Sunday morning (Pattaya
Time) he’s taken some time out from training to talk with the Manila
Bulletin newspaper. “Grabe talaga! “Good Day” Para akong lumaban
(“I am in great shape”), Ang matindi kasi ay ang umaakyat para umispar
ay mga fresh na fresh pa kaya’t todo talaga ang ipapakita mo sa ring
(“I look forward to fighting Eric Morales and am very happy that the
best boxing writer in Thailand will be ringside to cover the action.”)
Hindi ka puwedeng magrelax kasi siguradong bugbog ang aabutin mo oras na
magpa-easy easy ka.” (“Howie Reed writing the Square Ring in the
Pattaya Mail is the best and I look forward to beating Morales for all my
fans in Thailand and my good friend Howie”) You just can’t get insight
like that everyday! Let’s have a beverage.
PH3 - Run 1095
I arrived early at the A site, courtesy of the GM’s
splendid vehicle, he quite wisely parked the vehicle away from the threat of
falling coconuts, we all knew the hares had chosen the splendid site in the
hope that a falling coconut would drop onto the head of that quiet man
Retard W*nker, but sadly he survived another day. 105 hashers turned up. The
coconut threat was a real concern and I could not wait for the run to start.
The run itself was a tame affair no hills or water, the smokescreen that
appeared in the middle of the run was a good attempt to lose Retard W*nker
but this also failed. A mad poodle tried to attach its teeth to my leg but I
was saved by a German hasher who tortured and killed the wretched thing,
thanks comrade I owe you one beer. Yes, it was a nice little stroll around
for 50 minutes or so then back to the beer truck for the drinks. Before the
circle was called GM chased Retard W*nker with a big stick, this guy just
never learns does he. Then the circle was called by the finest GM I have
ever seen, then again, I have only seen one, the hares Skiing Finn and V.V.
where iced and everyone decided it was a good run. Sir Airhead took over and
performed a naming ceremony on a man called Graham from England, a
government official a double agent maybe so he got a double down-down, after
much debate Austin Flowers was his chosen name I must come clean this is
Austin writing now. I was nearly drowned by the evil Sir Airhead and my
buddy Catch deserved his icing for the bad things he said about me. A lot of
folk got iced for wearing pink Lord Lucan in his shocking pink panties
what’s going on. Some hasher was iced for false birthday there’s no
limit to there cheek. All the time Retard W*nker was on and off the ice and
in the bucket he is going for a hash record or something. A man from
Liverpool in England was iced and he tried to run off with the ice bucket as
only scousers can. Uncle Fester was iced for having a nice haircut it
wouldn’t be the circle without him being iced. Sir Chicken F’r was his
usual entertaining self, then along came Wheels with a song about little
willies, I think he is a secret pink panty wearer. The raffle was its usual
success nobody seemed to want the book though. The beer police won applause
for there security I will give them a government protection job in England
anytime, the circle closed with the hash anthem and we headed off to TQ 2
very happy, the food was better then the Scandi bar the previous week
although they send there apologies and its the second best bar in Pattaya
after Flying Frog’s splendid restaurant give it a try if you haven’t
already.

Cometh the hour, cometh the Mazman
MBMG International League - Week 21
With last weeks results favouring the Dubliner in The
MBMG International League a lot of questions were thrown up regarding The
Londoners title challenge. With last week’s drawn result, against a
Scandinavian Viking team that wouldn’t quit running and harassing, causing
them to fall twelve points adrift, a derby match against The Robin Hood,
although on a losing streak, could wreck all hopes of silver.
The Hood without three first choice defenders were no
match for the classy possession play of the Soi 33 outfit. Londoner’s
ability to capitalise on any weaknesses and Downer’s killer instinct saw
him net twice to give the Dons a 2-0 advantage at half-time.
Robin Hood made a positive start to the second half a
free kick from the left was turned in by Vinit for his first goal of the
season. However two minutes later The Londoner were awarded a free kick 25
yards from goal, Downer’s curling shot was turned onto the post by Dan,
Alex Stamp first to the rebound, nodded in to make it 3-1. With much of the
desire gone from The Hood, Downer was able to complete his hat-trick in the
dying moments. 4-1 improving Torrance’s tolerance.
Les Gauloise de Bangkok could do nothing to halt their
slide down the table. After being comprehensively beaten last week by AFC
Shrewsbury, a 2-1 defeat by the Bullshead Brazilians consigned them to fifth
spot behind RC Pattaya.
RC Pattaya improving their goal difference by routing the
Viking invasion of their sleepy fishing village, sending the Norsemen
skulking home the wrong side of a 6-1 hammering.
The Winking Frog scored four goals in a game yet again.
The Bangkok Blitz faring no better than last week’s victims The Robin
Hood. Diallo getting the MBMG’s other hat trick as soi 7s lean, green,
mean machine bludgeoned the basement Blitz 4-1.
Bangkok United pulled themselves within two points of
Seaboard by defeating the discordant journeymen 3-2
The cool weather of Saturday was burnt away by Sunday’s
blazing sun. British Club only having nine men must have felt an impossible
task lay ahead when facing a sixteen strong Dubliner Squad. Buoyed by the
previous weeks win against arch foemen the Brazilians complacency nearly
cost The Mighty dearly. The British Club Casuals plucky, gritty never say
die attitude and refusal to follow the script saw them take the lead after
just six minutes. The smallest man in the world T leaping three times his
body height to stun the white shirted, with a superbly placed header.
Resolute in defence and swift in counter attack the gutsy BCC made light
work of the conditions and the two man deficit.
With the arrival of an extra body the league veterans
went searching for another goal, hitting the post and producing a fine save
from the Thai wonder keeper “Ae”.
Fortunately the man nicknamed “The Scientist” was not
without essential elements of his own. Changes in personnel and tactics
brought about more incursions to the BCC goal, which in turn lead to a
penalty. Texas two step Mielke converting to bring the half-time scoreline
to 1-1.
Sometimes you just have to throw teacups. The second half
saw the Dubliner take the bit between their teeth. Limiting the British Club
to just a couple of chances and producing some fine saves from the BCC
keeper. With squandered chances, a never tiring defence and that man Hall
getting his gloves to everything the draw looked the most probable result.
Then Bacon Bits Amirahmadi took down a corner in his own box, laying it
backwards cleverly rather than punting it out. Two more passes saw Maz
finish his own box-to-box move slotting in coolly off the post. With a few
minutes on the clock Nicholson made a deft flick on in the six yard box to
allow the Mazman to bicycle kick home his second. A flattering 3-1 result at
the full time whistle.
Last weeks GAS received 5 courtesy of Seaboard and handed
5 straight back out to Pattana. German all Stars chalking up a 5-3 win for
the weekend’s final fixture. Visit www.somtam.com for more details.

The Beautiful Game?: Mourinho feeling the pressure
Riz Taylor
Chelsea managers past and present have been in the news
this week. After a miserable season Claudio Ranieri has tinkered with his
last team in Valencia after being sacked by the club. Back in London, his
successor Jose Mourinho hogs the headlines.
It’s been quite a year for supporters of Chelsea.
Despite a Champions League semi-final appearance and runners-up spot in the
Premiership, ending last season without silverware was the ammunition that
billionaire sugar-daddy Roman Abramovic needed to bring in his own man. Out
went the popular Ranieri and in came the brooding, arrogant Mourinho from
Portugal with a suitcase full of trophies and another bulging with matching
overcoats.
Success was immediate. Mourinho shored up the side’s
defence and soon the club topped the Premiership. But after successive
defeats at the hands of Newcastle United and Barcelona the media sharks
began to circle, detecting the scent of blood for the first time. In a
thrilling Carling Cup Final last week the Blues took the trophy with a 3-2
win after extra-time, but despite this achievement it was the manager’s
behaviour that dominated the back pages.
Following a late Chelsea equaliser after Liverpool
skipper Steven Gerrard’s own goal, Mourinho motioned a ‘hush’ sign
toward opposition supporters who had been taunting him. This led to his
dismissal from the pitch by the fourth official for inciting possible crowd
trouble. Gerrard meanwhile, having a spectacularly bad day at the office
against the side he is linked with a move to, was forced to play on with
“There’s only one Steven Gerrard” ringing in his ears. The problem was
that it was sung by the Chelsea supporters, not his own.
It appears that Mourinho will escape discipline from the
FA after claiming his gesture was directed at the press box (even though
this is on the opposite side of the stadium). Regardless, the momentary loss
of control suggests that the former Porto boss may be feeling the pressure,
despite his claims to the contrary. All this follows a tantrum in Spain when
he claimed Barcelona boss Frank Rijkaard visited the referee’s dressing
room for a cup of tea and a slice of cake during the half-time interval. He
also still faces an ‘improper conduct’ charge after comments made about
Manchester United’s sportsmanship after their Carling Cup semi-final
match.
His arrival in England has certainly ruffled a few
Premiership feathers. Barring a disastrous loss of form Chelsea will claim
their first title in 50 years at the end of the season, and that is good
news for neutrals tired with the dominance of Manchester United and Arsenal
year after year. Even juicier is the twist in the war of words between
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger and United’s Sir Alex Ferguson. The newcomer
is not afraid to speak his mind, so expect more fireworks as a genuine
three-way rivalry begins to take effect.
Asked for his thoughts on winning the Carling Cup,
Mourinho’s reaction “It’s just one more - I had a few before this”
might leave a sour taste in the mouth of many. More than one former manager
has likened the Portuguese to another famously big-headed European Cup
winning manager - the late Brian Clough. Frank Clark, who played under
Clough and is now the League Managers Association vice chairman says: “I
don’t like labelling people as another this or another that, but there are
certain similarities between Jose Mourinho and Brian. He has made outrageous
statements, but often to calculated effect. He has a terrific confidence in
his ability, which is something Brian certainly had.”
Whilst he has a superb record of producing winning teams,
accepting defeat gracefully is something that Mourinho may still need to
learn. Sir Bobby Robson, a former mentor of Mourinho at Barcelona and Porto,
told the press: “It has all gone for him just lately, but sometimes you
have to have a bit of humility and learn how to lose.”
If he doesn’t, Mourinho is in danger of turning Chelsea
into the team that everyone loves to hate.
Claudio Ranieri, meanwhile, leaves another club with a handsome payoff.
Rumours suggest he’s buying a bar in Jomtien.
