Pattaya Sports Club benches students at Ban Rongheep School
Ariyawat Nuamsawat
The Pattaya Sports Club is usually focused on getting people running
around, but at Ban Rongheep School it actually wants students to sit down.

The PSC’s Charity Committee July 9 presented school officials with 60 new
desks worth 42,000 baht for students at the Takhiantia primary school. The
presentation was the highlight of a day of gifts and activities for the
school that included free lunches and haircuts.
PSC Charity Chairman William Macey and Nittaya Patimasongkroh, president of
the YWCA Bangkok Pattaya Center, said the donation was just part of the
group’s ongoing efforts to support youth education.

Juthamas Beauty School
provides free haircuts for the young students.
Principal Kruawan Pungsurin said the school appreciated
the donation as it has only a limited government budget and relies on the
good deeds of community groups. Charity organizations have already provided
the school with a playground, multi-use building and water-filtration
system.
In the case of the desks, they will replace old and damaged furniture
purchased many years ago with government funds.
In addition to the desks, lunch of noodles and ice cream was provided to the
children by Dang-Dam Restaurant on Thepprasit Road, which is celebrating its
20th anniversary. Juthamas Beauty School also gave free haircuts.

Belgian children pitch in to help local families

Children of all ages gather round to watch
local magician Valenthai perform amazing tricks.

HelpLine Children is back helping the slum children of Pattaya.
Chris Hill, Dr Magali and daughter Thais held a party in one of the
Thepprasit slums.
During the party Doctor Magali of Antwerp, Belgium presented a gift of
100,000 baht to Pastor Sanay of Agape Children’s Home.
Doctor
Magali of Antwerp, Belgium presents a gift of 100,000 baht to Pastor
Sanay of Agape Children’s Home.
Many charities in Pattaya have benefited from the fund raising
activities of Magali and Chris - the last gift in January 2009 of
150,000 baht was from the Ambassador’s Club of Antwerp who had arranged
a piano recital. This time the gift was raised by Belgian schoolchildren
from the Koninklijk Atheneum School in Mortsel - a town just outside the
busy port of Antwerp.
Chris and Magali noticed that the economic downturn had taken a heavy
toll of charitable donations and so it is something of a small miracle
that the students of Koninklijk Atheneum Mortsel raised this desperately
needed money by selling cookies, hot dogs, and poems mostly to other
students.
Pastor Sanay, on behalf of all the poor children of the slums, thanked
the wonderful students of the Koninklijk Atheneum School in Mortsel and
the directors, staff and teachers who inspired their kindness.
Indeed the times are hard - in every country in the world people are
carefully conserving their money, giving us even more reason to laud the
efforts of this little team, HelpLine Children.
The party in the slum was complete with eats, drinks and ice cream and a
magician, Valenthai - but the real magic was the love.

Two area Lions Clubs green up
Father Ray Children’s Village
Vimolrat Singnikorn
Two area Lions Club chapters want to see lush gardens grow at
the sprouting Father Ray Children’s Village.
Children
at the Father Ray Children’s Village help plant the new trees.
Members of the Lions Clubs of Naklua-Pattaya and Taksin-Pattaya joined
children and staff to begin planting 300 trees at the 25-rai Mabprachan
Reservoir-area facility which currently is home to 34 orphans, street
kids and abandoned children.
Nakon Pol-look-In, Naklua-Pattaya club president, presented the special
selection of plants to Children’s Village Director Asaraporn Uolsopon
and Father Ray Foundation Director Laurence Patin July 15 as part of a
full day of fun and activity for the children.
Among the offerings was the Golden Shower tree featuring a bright yellow
blossom that is Thailand’s national flower. Also donated were Diospyros
rhodocalyx fruit trees grown predominantly in Thailand and endangered
agarwood trees, which produce a sweet aroma when attacked by a common
fungus.
Once mature, the trees will enhance the warm atmosphere of the village,
opened in September as a haven for orphaned, abandoned and runaway
children. Four homes have already been built with plans calling for the
construction of 5 more this year and 20 houses overall. Each house is
staffed by a “mother” and “auntie” who care for the kids. For many
youngsters, it’s the first time they’ve been part of a family with
parents, brothers and sisters.

Clubs of Naklua-Pattaya and Taksin-Pattaya pose with Father Patin and

Marines enlist TV star to make anti-drug pitch in Plutaluang
Patcharapol Panrak
The Royal Thai Navy hopes a little star power can dampen a
growing youth drug problem in Sattahip’s Plutaluang sub-district fueled
by increasing prosperity and western influence.
TV
star Chanya “Fanden” Tanakorn speaks to youths at Pramaha Jetsadaratchao
Camp.
Marines at Pramaha Jetsadaratchao Camp enlisted TV actor Chanya “Fanden”
Tanakorn to speak July 12 to more than 70 housewives and youngsters at
the Plutaluang base about the perils of drugs and offer advice on how
the community can band together to provide area youth with healthy
alternatives. Fanden proved effective in reaching out to the youths,
intertwining his message with jokes and antics.
The Housewives & Youth Anti-Drug Project was organized in response to
demands from local housewives about increased drug sales and use in
their community. It aims to battle drugs through prevention, treatment
and stricter punishment for drug offenses.
Project Director Lt. Col. Pongsak Thongsai, commander of the First
Infantry’s First Grenadier Battalion, told the group that today’s youth
are more influenced by western culture and technology and that the lust
for telephones and high-tech gadgets was partly responsible for the
increased drug trade.
Utilizing a drug-prevention budget from the Office for the Suppression
Prevention and Suppression of Narcotics the project will work with area
youths to educate them not only on the impact of drug use, but on how to
think for themselves and be less vulnerable to peer pressure and
cultural influences.
